she has a nice personality...not that you'll want to talk to her
She should teach the politics instead of her life down in Texas
She isn't fun to talk to, but she provides good outlines for the chapters so reading isn't a must. I got an A and didn't do a ton of work.
Has no clue about teaching. Gilkison would rather stand in front of the class and preach her liberal insanity than explain one of her writing assignments. I'm not angry because of a poor grade, I received an A- in the class.
Don't disagree with her or your semester will be HELL. The only good thing that came out of her class was that I met my husband!
All I learned is that Jesus and the church is bad. What that has to do with modern american politics, I have no idea.
Not a bad course. Did not care for her at all. But the course itself wasn't bad.
I enjoyed this class because of her teaching style. She is quite funny.
As an honors prof, Gilkison fails. She does everything an honors prof is NOT supposed to do. I found her rude toward students most of the time and restrictive of class participation. Stay away from this one, honors students....
Great teacher, a southern woman that expects a lot, but if you work hard it will pay off for those headed into the political science field.

Pretty easy.
she makes her political standpoint quite clear and is at times quite offensive. gets off topic very easily and has a hard time getting to the point. never going to take a class with her again.
She spends way too much time off on unhelpful tangents in class, when she could spend the time going more in depth into what we NEED to know :|
She oftentimes drops what I like to call "comment bombs" people who keep up with politics will know what she's talking about, and it always gives me a good laugh and keeps me awake. I love her hilarious stereotyping of Texans- pretty accurate, i'd say.
This professor has to be one of the worst I've had here at UWEC. Her weird comments and sound effects drove me crazy. The assigned readings had nothing to do with the class topics, and her assignments were very unclear. Good luck if you have to take this professor.
Terrible professor. She makes too many wierd noises and talks about things that have no relevance to what we need to know. Very unapproachable. She makes me hate political science even more
This class was only for Poli Sci majors, and should have been useful. It SUCKED. She was extremely hard to follow-switching topics constantly. She is one of those professors who will nickel and dime you on EVERY assignment. I honestly think it would kill her to give someone full points on something
Ok professor but papers/tests very, very hard. Pretty bad lecturer - notes often don't make sense and very disorganized. Her office looks like a tornado hit it. Wouldn't recommend taking her or this course. Nice lady but expects toooooo much from students.
I loved Gilkison. I thought she was adorable. The whole tapping her nails on the overhead became a bit much, but she obviously loved her job - what more can you ask for from a prof at Eau Claire??? And opinionated... good thing!!!
Fairly easy if you do the work and make an effort. Participation and competence in class will help you. Tests and papers okay. Just as long as you try and she knows there should be no problem. She's very sarcastic.
Grades papers like she is an English teacher. Also, comments on returned papers are very unprofessional and unfair. Midterm is unrealisticaly difficult and covers way too much info. So far the grade I have earned in the class is the lowest grade I have ever recieved in my life.
could not stand listening to her talk every other day!!! exams were very hard.

She is a pretty good prof, I found I did learn quite a bit, but really couldn't stand the way she talked, especially about sex

This class has the potential to be really boring, but Dr. Gilkison makes it pretty funny. Occasionally it is difficult to stay awake during lecture, especially at 8 AM. Her emailed study guides are good to have in preparing for exams.
She genuinely cares about her students being successful. Always sends out email reminders of things going on around campus or extra credit opportunities. I don't think she herself made the class hard. No daily assignments, only tests (they're hard). Oral report is very easy. Provides tutor sessions, which help a lot. Also sends out study guides.
Covers reading practically word for word.

Gilkison is an intimidating texan woman who really has a presence in the class room. She is an interesting teacher, though, whose tests are straightforward and not overly difficult. If you read and go to class you will do well.
Ugh! don't take her!! Believe me.
She definitely makes getting up for an 8am lecture interesting. She explains things well, but is sometimes ambiguous. I think she'd be very interesting in a smaller class-setting. The class isn't hard as long as you pay attention in class and study a little.
She explains but it will be a half hour explanation.

I loved this class! Getting up at 8 in the morning really isn't fun, but it is well worth it in the end. As long as you attend and use the study guides she sends out, you will get a good grade. She goes out of her way to help students (sets up study sessions and times when you can meet with her/review your tests.) Take it!
better not like George Bush, or be a republican for that matter. She has you take a assesment in the beginning of the class to find out what your political preference is, just so she knows if she can bash republicans or not. Didn't learn anything about class, just that she is a democrat.
i was very frightened of prof. gilkison. i was very intimidated by her and her appearance. she reminds me of the old lady from The Goonies
She is hilarious. Lecture at 8 is definitely not fun, but she keeps you pretty entertained. She seems intimidating, but she's really not. The class isn't too hard, just make sure you keep up on the reading and do the study guides. There's one oral report that isn't hard at all.
She is very intimidating. She knows her stuff, but she isn't the friendliest person you'll meet. I didn't enjoy this class much, because I don't enjoy politics. However she did make class entertaining sometimes with her jokes...
The class is super hard... but if you put in the time and make even the little bit of effort she will notice. PARTICIPATE!! She loves to give extra participation points at the end. The first paper is a ****, but once you get through it you'll be fine. I thought I'd get a C in the class and I ended up with an A, so she majorly curves at the end
Not only does Prof. Gilkison grade difficultly on assigments and tests, but she also is extremely rude. Although you are required the read articles and summarize them in front of the class, she regularily picks apart everything that you say. Her comments are not constructive criticism, but are rather just her attempt to belittle you. Avoid her!
This class has interesting material, but I would not have taken it had known what I was getting myself into with this professor. She is a tough grader, snaps at students, and it is rude. I would recommend the class itself, just not with her!
I don't really like her much. She's very up front about her political views, which is okay...when you're not supposed to be objectively teaching. Class wasn't that hard, but study and read the text, otherwise she'll grill you. She also has somewhat of a superiority complex, so be prepared to bow down to her greatness...
She was great...always there to help and made time for all questions, you just have to ask. Her lectures are full of her texan humor and you can tell she loves her job, she also loves pop culture
purposly makes things tricky. goofy noises. very negative view of people and life in general. says children are "disgusting" and talks about sex in class. avoid her if you can...there are better in the dept.
Don't take her... enough said. Tests are hard and her lectures are boring. She likes to stand on her soap box for the entire 50 minutes...
If you have a decent work ethic when it comes to the the reading material and you listen to lectures, it's not bad at all. She has a glum view of the world but is humorous about it. Overall she is a funny spitfire Texan.
If you are a valley girl I would not take the class as she does not like the word like used during oral presentations. Have your answers and speak loudly! Interesting class but you have to read your book and attend lectures to do well. Professor Gilkison is a little gruff but funny. If you're a non trad take her. She'll amuse you!
Prof. Gilkison is a very unclear, unmotivated, and unhappy person. She acts like teaching is a punishment and you can tell she doesn't want to be there. She doesn't give clear answers when you ask questions and she does not do a good job preparing you for exams. She will also try to put confusing questions on the exams and will try to trick you.
Teacher bases almost your whole grade on how well you do on three exams.
Very hard, does not help students, exams are not on anything she teaches, 3 words DONT TAKE HER!
I loved this class! Started out shaky, but once I realized what she expected (know your stuff!) it was a breeze. She is hilarious and intelligent all at the same time. Would love to take her again.
I knew her political views within the first minute of class (democrat) She has a very.. sarcastic sense of humor. I agree with the word glum. She likes to release a high pitched sigh, evry so often when something really gets her down. She certainly knows her stuff though and in my experience is very helpful. Its realy good 2 write down stuff in lec
Take note of her entrances. She waddles in and pushes the roller chair really hard into the door as routine. She's terrible. Makes this (ahhhh-emmmm) noise as part of her POS sarcastic personality. Not friendly, nor is she helpful. She doesn't belong teaching. Class is easy though, I'd rather have a hard class and a great professor...
She's not horrible. Not warm and fuzzy but will help if you ask questions that are in her mind reasonable. Work hard, go to class, show her you care and you won't have a problem. Yeah a lot of her lectures aren't relevant to the exam...but it's not hard to filter them.
Terrible. If you can take classes with someone else.
Half the class failed the midterm... papers are ridiculous. She makes her opinions very well known and not just about politics either. Also, she makes annoying, random noises. You learn a lot but you sacrifice your sanity, dignity, and possibly your grade.
Ok, so Dr. Gilkison is a bit cynical and has a dry sense of humor. She makes it seem like her tests are hard, but they really aren't if you take notes on her lectures and read through the textbook. Note: Don't say like...like ever.
She says that she doesn't put trick questions on the test (she does). You might as well teach yourself this subject because if your classmates don't know all their material during their reports you have to do extra research! Stay away from this class!
She wasn't bad. Yeah she expects you to know your stuff but...you're in college you should know it. Go to class, TAKE NOTES, read the text if you are confused and you will do fine.
Gilki mama is cute as a button. Loves teal and orange. Drives a sidewalk van for means of transportation (saw her at the mall with it). Has a thing for deceased men... especially Alexander Hamilton. I like, like her.
This professor is the worst! She explained the material in class; however, she does not prepare you for the exams well. Out of my class of 118, 118 students failed the first exam with either an F or an F-. I am an above average student, and I preapared myself. She is rude at all means, sarcastic, and thinks very highly of her self. DO NOT TAKE HER!
Gilkison is an average professor. If you do the readings and keep up on lecture notes, you will be fine. Grades are average, depends on how well you learn the material.
I don't know why everyone is giving her such a low rating. She is just kind of an average professor. She has a few annoying qualities about her and her class is pretty boring. Exams aren't hard if you study and very few assignments. She wasn't my favorite but definately wasn't the worst.
Her southern accent was the last thing I wanted to hear at 8am she is NOT funny and has an evil laugh. Also, she is a horrible grader and her test are super HARD. hated her class with every part of my soul. DONT TAKE HER!
The only reason I am doing well in this class is because I have done everything on my own. This Prof. cannot keep up with grading and will spend more time telling you about her personal opinions and beliefs than the material that is supposed to be covered. She is not helpful or approachable and shows that she does not want to be teaching at 8 am.
I like her. She's very dark and somewhat cynical, but she's not there to be your mom
Dr. Gilkison is really funny. And she is really nice. If you try hard you could get a great grade in the class. I didn't do well because I stink at Poli Sci, but I studied and did better in the class than I thought I would do. She makes class bearable to go to
AWFUL TEACHER. DO NOT TAKE HER! her tests were ridiculously hard even if you studied and kept up with the reading. she makes reall dumb jokes all the time and none are funny. trust me do not take her or you will regret it! I DID!
She isn't easy, but she isn't hard. Don't rely on her study guides for exams (failed the first exam doing that) but her exam questions is all in the notes she gives out. So you will have to study, and know your stuff, but thats what you should do. She isn't hilarious, but she does throw a couple of funny jokes every now and then. Ended with a B-
Very smart professor. Uses book religiously and if you don't come to class and really pay attention and contribute, you will get down graded. Very hard on tests and you get to pick your topic on essays, but a very hard grader. Attendance is mandatory and if you miss more than 2 periods, don't bother showing up unless you have read the material.
Her exams were very difficult, but once you learn how she gives them, you will get better. She is a very interesting lecturer and is constantly laughing at herself. Attendance is required, but don't be fooled, just because she doesn't call your name..doesn't mean she doesn't know who you are and taking attendance to herself.
Gilkison's grading is very skewed and entirely subjective. She is not approachable or helpful. I did okay in the class, but out of all of the professors I had in poli sci at my time at EC, she was definitely my least favorite.
Her class has some difficulty. This isn't a repeat of a high school course and you have to read, participate in discussion and actually ask questions to get the material. If you are a lazy student who is used to the professor doing everything than find another professor but if you are a college level student the work is no problem
I hated politics going into this class. She definitely kept it interesting for an 8 am class! She's a great teacher but a tough grader (not tough enough that you shouldn't take her). Her jokes are funny and she knows what she's talking about! I would suggest taking her! As long as you study for the tests you'll do fine! Good luck! :)
Gilk can be quite the crab, but overall knows her politics. Her southern accent brightens the class and her exams aren't that hard. Study and keep up with the chapters and you'll do just fine.
Decent Professor. She was a funny at first but then kind of got annoying but she knows her politics
An easy class to keep up with day to day, but the exams and papers will kill you. Very picky when it comes to written answers on exams. Grades papers much more like an English teacher, she'll find grammar mistakes you didn't know existed. I'd avoid her if you can.
She was a good teacher. Not too difficult if you attend class and take good notes. Offers extra credit. Read the textbook if you expect to do well on tests. As long as you do well on the multiple choice part of the tests, you'll do fine. It's hard to know what she expects for the oral exam, but she doesn't grade it too harshly. I enjoyed the class.
While the class is difficult, it is exceptionally rewarding and incredibly interesting... Make sure you read, read, read! Tests are hard and the papers are also hard. Work hard on them and do your best. Follow the gold sheet she gives you! Edit your papers!
I am an English major, and POLS 110 is a mandatory gen class I had to take. It was a fairly interesting class, but I can not stress enough to NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!!! She is boring to listen to, rude, her exams are extremely difficult, and she basically could careless about her students. Look into different professors for the course!
The class is based on 3 exams and that's about all. She is enjoyable to listen to during class and has a good sense of humor. However she is very rude to students when they try to participate in class, unless they provide perfect answers. She is very helpful if you email her questions.
I had this class at 8am, and it was actually interesting and woke me up. As long as you attend class and take her notes, you'll ace every test because her exams are based off of her notes. EASY A! For those of you who are complaining, I'm not sure why. It's hard to do poorly in this class!
This is by far the worst professor I have had yet. Her exams are impossible, she does not grade essays objectively, and i'm 99% sure she didn't even grade the final. Over half of my class ended up dropping her course. Over 60% of the class failed her midterm and the paper. I strongly advise to steer clear of her.
I would recommend not taking this class with her, I had to because it was the only one available with my schedule. 50% Of the class failed the first exam or had a D. 25-30% Failed. She said she expected 15% to fail, and there are only 3 exams total with 2 other small grades. She is rude to those that participate, don't take her
She is terrible! I would not recommend her by any means. She thinks everyone is her class is completely stupid and useless. Most people fail the first test. The tests aren't easy either. I would definitely say take another teacher if you can. If you can't then really pay attention in class and read the book!
Very tough class AVOID IF YOU CAN. She knows her politics. When writing a paper, not only do you need perfect grammar (grades like a high level English teacher) but you need to know your topic like the back of your hand.
She. Is. Terrible. She doesnt put grades in. Only three tests and the first one you will fail. She is kind of boring to listen to as well. Just overall not a good professor. Dont take her, thats all I have to say.
Dr. Gilkison is a good professor and means well. Her first exam is difficult. Do in fact study for the first exam or your grade will show it. It is important to read the chapters because the exams reference charts & figures from the textbook. Make sure to do all the work & assigned readings along with the outline and vocabulary and you'll do well.
Professor Gilkison is a great professor and teaches a very fun class. Homework is minimal but make sure to DO THE READINGS. Tests are only difficult if you don't do the readings or look over the lecture notes. Highly recommend taking this class with her.
You learn a lot in the class bu Dr. Gilkison's test are pretty hard. You should be able to pull off an A if you take good notes and review them often. If SI sessions are offered, go to them! They really help. Reading the book is a good idea but not completely necessary, I know people who never read who get close to 100% on the tests everytime.
She was prone to rambling on and on. Lectures were seldom clear, and her directions for assignments were also unclear despite being extremely long and detailed. In all honesty, she seemed angry all the time, as if she hated being there and didn't want to even talk to us. It created an uncomfortable atmosphere. Overall, I'd say avoid her if you can.
Avoid this class! There is lot of reading for this class. The entire grade was pretty much based off of just tests so if you do poorly on the tests then you are SOL. The tests aren't too bad IF you study A LOT. She doesn't care at all about her students. She is one of the most rude and selfish professors here!
She is unprofessional, rude, and does not seem to care about her job or students. She is also very very bias, and will talk very bad about who she disagrees with based on opinion, sounds like a repeat from the media. I expected better from a University professor!!!
I just started POLS 110 with her and I HATE IT. She is soo annoying. She talks as if she knows everything, and her students are stupid. So far her class is okay, but she will quiz you on things and then teach them to you afterwards. She isn't afraid to mention that majority of the class "wont do so well" which is true. AVOID HER AS A PROFESSOR.
Mandatory class for poli sci majors...If I didn't have to take it with her I would not have put myself through that. She is so unclear and boring. AVOID!
Avoid if Possible
Started off interesting but then her typical liberal left-wing bias came out. Poked more fun at republicans than teaching. Gives 3 midterms. Final is just another midterm test not comprehensive. Choose 1 of 3 extra credit options for easy 10pts. Easy class for me but not for some friends. Boring. Skipped in class essay day and still got a B+.
The class was generally easy if you attended everyday and took good notes. But her tests are based off of mainly her lectures and random facts/figures/charts in the book. I studied hard and took extensive notes both in class and textbook readings, and still only got a B. If you have the time to study this is an okay class, if not find someone else
Lectures are interesting and you learn a lot of material. The tests are EXTREMELY difficult. Dr. Gilkison is very sarcastic, rude, and only likes things perfectly the way she thinks they could be. If you can, avoid, but if you must, it's not too horrible.
Highly recommend to avoid if possible! But if you can't, attend as many SI and review sessions if you can.
Once you get used to her sarcasm, she's pretty funny. As long as you take good lecture notes and go over them to study you're good to go. She also has reviews before the test that are EXTREMELY helpful, plus she gives extra credit options. Definitely not as bad as everyone says and I'm not a straight A student!
Her lectures are almost never clear. I pay attention to every word but sometimes I'll leave class not knowing what I should've gotten out of it. And I had an A until the final, which was a take home stats analysis project. She didn't even look at mine because I hadn't stapled it correctly, but nowhere in the rubric did she tell us how to staple it.
Gilkison's class is my worst one. She gives three exams and the final, and they're all very tough. More than half of the class failed the first exam, so get ready to study stuff that's not even in your in-class notes, because you've got to read the textbook too in order to pass. She gives one extra credit assignment worth 10 points, good luck.
Gilkison is hilarious. Her lectures are filled with funny quotes and she knows what she is talking about. She expects you to read and come to class with the desire to concentrate and learn. Sometimes her lectures are boring, but overall an easy class if you do minimal reading and take decent notes.
I'm not very good at government and history and it's a lot of memorization. You learn things in class and the exam is more applying what you learn in the class to a question rather than AA.
Gilkison gives 3 exams, an oral report, and an in class essay as far as grades. SHE WILL PICK YOU APART during your oral report so be prepared for that, but if you're confident it won't be as bad. Material is easy and she's fairly straight forward about what you need to know. I would take her again!
This class was insane. She prefaced it by saying its the hardest class well take as undergrads. Her expectations were unattainable and she actually enjoyed giving out poor grades-- seriously. Most of the class failed the exams. Assignments were very frequent and graded extremely harshly. This woman is a psychopath. Avoid at all costs.
I loved her class! She is sassy and engaging, even at 8 am. Be knowledgeable for her tests and you will do fine.
Three tests, one (easy) discussion, extra credit offered and a essay. Hardest class I've ever taken. She is very (rudely) opinionated. She can be funny but the class is very hard overall and requires a lot of time outside of class and full class periods are all lecture.
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. Avoid if possible. She was a last resort when I chose classes and it was the worst mistake of my life. She is very rude and opinionated, loves failing students, and makes it impossible to pay attention during class due to her long and boring lectures. Everyone fails her exams as well because she isn't clear.
The Lecture Notes are well organized and easy to follow. But when you doing your oral report be sure to repeat exactly what you read in the book or article, any free thinking and she will criticize you. When taking the end of the year essay same situation, be sure to write pretty much exactly what she said in class. She is a really tough grader.
She's pretty intense. Pretty funny. If you fail the first test I would just drop the class. And definitely come to class.
I recommend 110% you never take this class with Gilkison. Not only is she actually rude, but her lecture are long, boring, and no help to the only 3 exams we have... if you do have her.... may God be with you
You could read the text book front to back and still fail the exams.
She is hilarious to listen to in class, but her tests are hard and you have to read out of the book regularly.
I personally liked the content of the class and her lectures, but the class itself is pretty difficult. You really have to work for your grade and do all the readings. She is slightly intimidating and hard to reach outside of class. You don't get graded on a lot so you really need to do good on the tests which are pretty hard.
Extremely difficult. You need to do the readings and constantly pay attention during lectures. She's funny in class but extremely intimidating during your oral reports. You're really only graded on your exams so if you don't do well you won't pass the class.
Worst professor I have had in my three years at UWEC. Would not recommend her or take her again. She is an extremely tough grader. She told our class we all did poorly on the midterm and would have to do the extra credit to pass. She made difficult content more confusing for me.
I attended every class but one, and did all the reading. She covers a lot of material, but gets off topic a lot and expects you to do the extra reading on your own if she doesn't get to it in lecture.
Her lecture notes are very organized. She gives you guides for the chapters, which you should use! I printed mine out and wrote everything on that. Lots of extra credit options, but you can only do one and receive a max of 10 points. Oral activities focused on the textbooks and D2L articles. Personally, the textbooks seemed easier.
She goes on and on about things not relevant to the course. Terrible teacher and expects everyone to know what's going on. Definitely not a 100 level course. She's terribly disorganized and her class is so boring. Her office is a mess, and you will not get anything done. She doesn't give out homework, so your grade is solely based on exams.
Mags is the bomb! Her class was very straightforward: 200 points total, 180 needed for an A with ten points of extra credit thrown in there. Simple enough, especially with the detailed chapter outlines she throws in (if you study these you will do much better on the test). Lectures won't be boring if you can pick up on her subtle humor.
Class ended up not being too hard but good luck if you don't align with her political views. Be ready to get ripped to shreds on oral reports, she always goes beyond what is asked in initial prompt. Very lazy and acts like she has the toughest job in the world when giving excuses as to why assignments aren't graded.
This class was by far my worst so far at UWEC. Prof. Gilkison put an outline of the lecture on the board, but would often go so off-topic that I wasn't sure what to write down. The entire grade was made up of four tests and a 10pt oral report that she cut everyone to shreds on. The class was boring and extremely difficult. Would not recommend.
Please save yourself and do not take Gilkison. Her sarcastic remarks and rude comments make the class uninteresting and unbearable. She provides awful notes, you must write down everything she is saying word for word otherwise good luck. No homework to boost your grade. I could go on, but ill just get angry.
Gilkison is the worst prof I've ever had. Her lectures 90% of the time do not even have anything to do with the notes she has. The class is only based off tests so drop the class if you get a bad grade on the first test drop the class.
Horrible professor, unclear, disorganized. Rude to students. Save yourself she is one of the worst at uwec.
Disrespectful, condescending, and absolutely unprofessional. There is not one part of my being that would wish anyone to have this professor. Save your mental health and well being by avoiding her at all costs. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. Worst prof I've EVER had.
Dr. Gilkison is one of my favorite professors. She was really helpful especially for freshmen in their first semester of college. She really wants students to succeed, and has a great sense of humor. Her presentation notes are really basic, so you have to really be listening to get proper notes for the class.
Professor Gilkison was probably the worst professor I could've ever imagined having. The only 3 grades in the class come from tests, besides one very small oral report. Overall, her lectures are very boring and hard to follow. From talking to her one on one and what she said to my class, she doesn't really seem to care whether you pass or not.
Dr. Gilikson had no structure during lecture, and nobody in the class really understood the material for the first paper. I dropped her class on the very last day I could and she had a paper with last names on it, turns out those were students who dropped the course, and it was over a quarter of the class, plus a ton of names from other courses.
3 test, 60 points and the first test is the hardest so if you do bad then its hard to get your grade up. Study your notes from lecture and pay attention in class! Her notes aren't exactly to the point. SO TAKING GOOD NOTES IS KEY. Would not recommend at all but if you get stuck with her study your notes because that what her test mostly are.
43 percent of the class got D's or F's on the first exam. Enough said her class is awful.
Honestly, people on here are exaggerating. Key to getting an A: she gives you VERY BARE-BONED notes. You HAVE to listen to what she says and write down ALL extra stuff she says-she goes slow don't worry. When test comes, memorize only those notes from class, don't worry much about studying textbook. Don't miss class. Didn't take much of my time tbh
She can be funny, and is very in-depth during lecture, always sharing specific examples, so she is really smart. However she can be extremely opinionated, and will occasionally go on a tangent. Occasionally intimidating, but she really does care about her students. The tests were difficult, even with lots of studying. So READ THE TEXTBOOK.
I worked harder in this class than any other only to get a B+. Had to memorize vocabulary from her lecture notes (a lot), five chapters of reading, and the constitution for just one exam. She's one of those professors that hates giving out As. Is not approachable and does not answer emails. Avoid class cuz youll work hared than ever to get a B
Professor Gilkison is an awesome professor. Had her spring of 2017. She makes the material funny and relatable for students even if you aren't a polysci major. You do have to read the textbook if you want an A. It is extremely manageable, as she gives you a reading guide. If you study the reading guide and lecture notes, you will get a goos grade.
Dr. Gilkison is well-informed about the field of Public Administration, but is a highly unprofessional instructor. She arrives 10-15 minutes late to most classes, is condescending in her remarks about assignments and student performance, ignores emails, and goes on rants during class that make it difficult to tell where we are in the syllabus.
Gilkison is an awful professor. She is way too picky on assignments and hardly anyone gets higher than a C on any of her assignments or exams. Avoid her at all costs
Dr. Gilkison is one of the least informative professors I have ever had. She spent an entire class talking about buying new cars, and I don't remember what she was trying to relate to the lecture about public administration. 8 out of 13 students in the class failed the midterm, and she will not curve it. No idea where we are in the syllabus.
Please don't take this class if it isn't required. Test are 90% of the grade and she gets off topic very easily. Test are hard so you might as well drop if you don't study.
I do not recommend her. She was extremely unclear when giving directions and it was a frustrating class. She get's upset if you can't understand something; it was then difficult to meet her expectations. I learned little from this class, and didn't enjoy it in general.
I like hearing her lectures, since she is not afraid to through shade at anyone. This course is base on three exams. Which would be okay except that these tests are impossible to score high on. I was an A student and the highest test score I got was a C+. DON'T SKIP YOU WILL FAIL!! Study the textbook, she like tests on things unmentioned in class.
Dr. Gilkison's class is pretty simple. More than likely you've already heard 90% of the material from your high school civics class. She often goes on little rants but at least they're somewhat humorous. Go to class and take notes and you'll be just fine.
Not a fan. She's very southern and opinionated, and let's it show in class. Not overall rude, but not very pleasant to have in class. Very hard grader, and her tests are impossible. Would never take her as a teacher again.
Gilkison's rhetoric is great. I wish she would utilize PowerPoint, though. Notes rely strongly on your own ability to determine what in her tangents is actually noteworthy. Her tests are insanely hard. She'll email study guides of sorts, fortunately, but get ready to be digging for really obscure information that maybe wasn't discussed in class.
She more or less grades three exams and has an oral report. Gilkison makes her political affiliation known but still provides great connections with current politics to her lectures. Her lecture notes are bare-bones so listen and take notes. Showing up isn't required but it certainly saves you from reading the textbook. Overall, good professor.
You teach yourself most of the material, but you need to show up to class to get hand outs and assignments. Some assignments are weighted weirdly, a simple homework assignment that can be done in 15 mins can be worth 10 points, but a paper that you need to read an entire book in order to complete, will be worth only 10 points more than that. Avoid.
I found her really entertaining, despite being really opinionated. She holds your attention during lectures, and goes on tangents sometimes but they're always really funny. This being said, she is a really tough grader so don't slack off. If you just do your reading and kinda pay attention in class you'll be good. She also counts attendance
Gilkison is a solid professor, if not a difficult one to take. She's heavy on the lectures but light on the homework. The flipside is though that her tests are a bit much. She gives a very rough idea of what's on the exam which ultimately makes you over-study for it. She's funny during lecture though and has good stories. Not a bad choice overall.
Avoid this professor at all costs. Impossible exams mixed with boring lectures that are filled with senseless ramblings.
Gilkison rambles a ton and is extremely hard to follow throughout her lectures. She isn't willing to help you out if your grade is slipping. TONS of people dropped the class at the deadline. There are also no opportunities to raise your grade. No quizzes or homework graded, only three exams and an oral report. Do not take this class!!
I took POLS 110 with Gilkison and withdrew from the class. Gilkison is a horrible lecturer and provides students with no real help to do well on tests. She expects students to do the most for her class and doesn't help those who don't put forward that effort. Your grade is based off of 3 tests essentially. I wouldn't take this class if it was free
She gives amazing commentary throughout class. I thoroughly enjoyed her class. Gilkison is rather outspoken about where she stands on many issues and that may be an issue to some. When she enters the room she makes the room smell like chives. But the smell grows on you and is essentially a pheromone. I would recommend her to anyone.
Terrible grader that brags about how she fails so many students. More than half the class failed the midterm for POLS 290 and a third of the 110 (an intro class) dropped cause they failed the first test. Very bad at teaching in general. The course is required for Political Science major and only she teaches it at the moment so good luck.
Most challenging prof I've had thus far in poli sci but I believe it benefited me. Her notes and lectures can be hard to follow. She is strict on the format of her assignments so follow directions. Can seem intimidating but I strongly recommend stopping by her office hrs as often as you can even if you think completed the assignment correctly.
She's smart but her lectures are very boring and the only things that go toward your grade are 3 difficult exams and an oral report, which can be really hard on your grade. She also makes lots of opinionated comments about politics that she probably shouldn't. The only reason I took her is because I'm a POLS major and the class was required!!
Many people don't like her, but I do! You need to be a good note taker and write down more than what she just puts on the board. The class is very test heavy although you are allowed one extra credit option, an oral report and an essay. She likes to tell stories and they are quite entertaining. I definitely recommend her though! She's great
Its safe to assume that if this professor wasnt tenured that she would be let go from the university immediately. Terrible tangent filled lectures that rarely serve any purpose for the assignments or tests. The most disorganized professor Ive had. She lost multiple students assignments and rarely has enough hands outs to give out to students.
Professor does not communicate well with students and fails to respond to questions in favor of answering her own. Disrespectful of students who disagree with her and refuses to accept differing opinions. Bull-headed in a bad way. Lectures boring AND uninformative.
Dr. Gilkison is very knowledgeable about American Politics and provides a lot of great examples. She lectures off of PDFs with few words and projects them, so you also have to write down what she is saying. Her lectures can be boring. Your grade is based on 200 points: 3 exams, 1 oral report (easy), and an essay. She gives extra credit options too.
Dr. Gilkison is a very entertaining character at UWEC, but I would not choose her as a first choice. Nothing against her, but her class was not for me. I took her POLS110 to get credit for general eds and it wasn't great for me. I received an A, but her class had very few points. If you bomb one test in that class, you have to WORK to get it back.
in her lectures, in which she rambles, she uses a projector which is really frustrating in the year 2020. Graded on only 3 exams the whole semester with a 10 point oral report. She is funny but you can tell she doesn't put a ton of effort in any more. The tests are easy if you show up to study sessions with the student teacher, which I reccomend.
Do not take classes by Gilkison! She is unorganized and forgetful. She assigns many readings throughout the semester which are all found in Canvas but are only given a one word title so you have to look through all of them to find the one you need to do. She expects her students to think the exact same way as she does.
Professor Gilkison makes you question how she has a job at the university, she comes late almost every day and comes unprepared. Lecture consists primarily of her rambling nonsense that isnt related to the course. She makes several inappropriate comments throughout the semester and will often make you feel uncomfortable. Avoid her at all costs.
Absolutely terrible college experience. Difficult for no reason and does not work with students whatsoever. Run.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! She doesn't know how to use canvas so everything is emailed to you and sometimes you get 10+ emails a day. It is so hard to know what you are supposed to be doing and she doesn't respond to emails. She also just rants about things unrelated to the class instead of lecturing. She makes it very hard to get up for an 8am.
The tests are based on her lectures and textbook readings. In order to pass the class you have to read the textbook and it is a lot. Each chapter is around 30 pages and we have to read at least 5 chapters for each test. Essentially, no one in the class understands what is going on in the class and I would strongly recommend going to the SI sessions
She is the worst professor by FAR I have taken at UWEC. You submit everything via email, so you don't ever get a response. She doesn't like technology so nothing is in canvas, NOTHING. You have to be in class regardless of covid. Very unorganized, with little direction on homework. I am a straight A student, and I believe I will fail this course.
Terrible professor please never take this class. By FAR the worst professor I have ever had. We had 3 exams that were not at all related to her lectures. Gives Zero homework so its impossible to learn. Please NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS
Awful professor. I averaged a 3.95 in high school. Took this class my first semester of college and she is absolutely taking my GPA. She also has 0 idea how to use email, so virtual learning is very difficult; especially if you want feedback.
I have no idea how I ended with a B in this class, I failed the midterm. The Professor has no clue how to use canvas which made this class nearly impossible. I learned very little from this course and spent hours doing article reviews that she graded harsh. Thankfully she did offer extra credit at the end. If this course is not needed DON'T TAKE!!!
Professor Gilkison is very unorganized. She has no mercy for her students and if you want help, don't even bother to ask. Unfortunately, I had to withdraw from this class because I did not have many other options. She lectures about things totally irrelevant to the class and doesn't explain what is on the exams. I do not recommend this professor.
Exams are unclear she expects details that she does not go over. Readings are a must. Participation matters. no communication outside of class. Did not get the syllabus until after 1-2 months of the semester. Doesn't use canvas everything is thru email. I passed the class but only because I hounded her about my assignments, exams, & ALOT of effort.
This is the worst professor in UWEC. She is very unclear on when things are due and when you are supposed to take exams. High recommend you stay away from this old lady.
Dr. Gilkison is by far the worst professor I have had at UWEC. She is rude to the students, and is extremely unclear about what is to be done. Classes are supposed to be Tuesdays and Thursdays, yet she posts lecture videos not near those time and expects them done by the next day. She doesn't answer emails much, and is just all around a bad prof.
This class in incredibly unorganized and Margaret is very unprofessional. She is very unclear in instruction and has lately only given instruction through nearly incoherent emails. When students ask for clarification, she is rude and insensitive towards peoples confusion. Your grade is almost entirely tests. Definitely would stay away if you can.
The worst professor I have had at UWEC. She send instructions through confusing emails, then proceeds to get angry when students are confused. She posts videos days after they are supposed to be, and when important dates/assignments are coming up, she emails you less than a week in advance. DO NOT take her if you value your GPA and mental health.
She is an awful professor, period. She goes off on more tangents than actually teaching the material. Her exam questions are not specific so multiple answers could fit. Your whole grade is based on 3 exams & a article review. If you respect yourself and want to maintain your gpa do anything but take classes she teaches.
The absolute worst professor I have ever had in my life. She talks on and on about stories off topic and then proceeds to get mad when students don't do well in her class. You have to read so many chapters in order to do well on the quizzes because her lectures teach you absolutely nothing. Please do yourself a favor and DO NOT take this class.
Dr. Gilkison has been the worst prof ive taken in 3 years of schooling. She is extremely disorganized. We had 3 quizzes, 3 tests, an EC assignment, article review and a final essay. The ONLY things submitted to the grade book before the end of the semester was our tests because theyre automatically entered by canvas. Do not take this prof.
Dr. Gilkison was sometimes a bit unorganized and I didn't enjoy that everything was through email rather than canvas BUT I did really enjoy this class with this professor otherwise. She is elaborate and sarcastic with some of the things she talks about which always made our class giggle. Make sure to go to class and read the articles to pass.
She is a decent lecturer, however her tests are mad hard even when taken online
I'm a fairly good student and after reading her reviews figured I could tough her class out - NO. This is the worst class I have ever taken. Margaret is rude, condescending, and the exams covering nothing we learn. Grades are barely every updated, I spent all semester praying I passed. I learned nothing, complete waste of time. DO NOT TAKE
Unorganized and not up to date with what she teaches. Her exams are based on her opinion not what the true answer is. She does not know how to use canvas so be ready for lots of emails from her.
This professor has no concern about her students well being. She has zero motivation to try and help the students in her class succeed. I am in the Army National Guard. I had a mandatory drill weekend and couldn't be present on Friday (that was my report date) I asked if I could make up the quiz from that day and she denied it. Don't expect help
Margaret is very opinionated and and goes off on tangents throughout the class. The material we go over in class is barley related to what is on exams and quizzes. She's very monotone and it's easy to zone out in this class. She takes forever to grade and barely uses canvas. All assignments and reminders are sent through an email which is difficult
Her lecture notes are not specific, so it's important to go to class and write down what she's saying. She gives quizzes that are supposed to be easy, but they're all short response questions with weird-worded questions. I haven't missed a class, read the textbook, and yet i'm still struggling. Not a fan, hope I don't have to have her again.
Save yourself a headache and pass on this class. Professor emails you information instead of using canvas and makes the class way harder than it has to be. Your grade depends on 3 exams, an article review, a few quizzes, and an essay. I show every class and take detailed notes and the class is still hard. If you take this class good luck.
I dreaded going to this class. Her notes are on paper, so you need to be in class to get them. She is all over the place with her lectures. She tells us to look things up all of the time and to look at the video lectures she posts online. Tests are difficult, and she waits until the last minute to put grades in the gradebook.
Rambles about things not pertaining to class. Will not explain terms or answer questions. She was probably a good teacher at some point, and can still be at times, but is not able to teach well anymore
I put hilarious because this class is a joke. She does not know how to teach and most of the time just tells you to look it up but then when it comes to an exam it is the answer she thinks not the proven answer. Does not know how to use canvas and will get emails multiple times a day so make sure you read them.
DONT take this class unless you NEED TO!!! She only lectures and if you don't know a question that is new info to the class, she acts like you should and tells you to look it up. Her test questions are the answer she believes is right not the ACTUAL answer. Also when she grades papers, she focuses more on your grammar rather than the answer.
Gilkinson is an amusing professor, but the negatives out way the positives. The grade book is filled with mainly tests and quizzes. Gilkinson is a paper professor and is not advancing with technology. Lectures are released in canvas so it's easy to catch back up. If you like politics enjoy but if you're looking for a grade, look somewhere else
Honestly, Gilkison is not as bad as everybody is making her sound. While the class is graded by few tests and quizzes, as long as you show up to the lectures and take detailed notes, you'll be fine. I did not read a single thing from the textbook and got mostly A's on the assignments. She also offers an extra credit assignment mid-semester.
Spent three hours doing an extra credit assignment, she changed the questions the day it was due and told me to "figure it out" when I explained I didn't have notes on the new questions. Talks about random things way too much, DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO USE CANVAS, and the lectures are painfully slow and boring. Avoid this class at all costs.
She just isn't it. Very old fashioned (makes you write in pen and if not, you lose points), doesn't know how to use canvas, lecture heavy, like to get off topic, hard to follow, lecture notes aren't the greatest.
She tended to get off topic during lectures and the midterm was hard and based on things she didn't talk about in class. If you want to do well in this class you need to go above and beyond and read everything she posts
She knows her stuff, but you are graded on very few things. In addition, you must be in class or you will not pass. She expects you to do lots of work outside of class. Be ready to work hard, and take your assignment seriously.
Absolutely avoid. Find something else to fill this Gen Ed
You have to read a lot and she only has a few assignments so it is hard to get your grade to an A if you mess up on a assignments
This professor teaches via long and boring lectures but occasionally adds humor to the discussion. She is not very good at pacing herself and we often were left to cover material on our own due to her going off-topic in class. The tests were easy if you paid attention to lectures and took notes.
Gilkison seems nice enough, but her computer illiteracy, outdated views, and dull lectures make her and her class an unpleasant experience.
She doesn't know how to use the canvas page so there are next to no additional resources outside of the textbook, and she takes months to grade the assignments she gives you. Lectures are her reading bullet points off of a piece of paper but expects you to answer exam/quiz questions in excruciating detail, which she never gives you.
She was the worst professor I have ever had if you are reading my review right now drop her do not take the class. She is very biased and her exams don't make sense. You are graded on only two things then you have four exams she does not know what shes is talking about.
I really did not enjoy her teaching style. She blabs on and on all the time, often mentioning things that aren't important. She also isn't very constructive. She tells you you're wrong and then makes you continue to guess until you're right. Answers also need to be perfect to her liking.
Did not enjoy her or the class at all. One of the worst classes I have taken. Did well in the class, but only because I taught myself the majority of the content. She is a terrible professor. Lectures were not helpful and not engaging. NOTHING is online besides exams. She refuses to use technology even for her lectures. Barely graded on anything.
Gilkison is a tough grader, but as long as you watch the lecture videos on Canvas/attend them in person, you'll be fine. Notes are a little weird, formatting-wise. Textbooks are not used often, but they help a lot on the final green book assignment (yes it's weird, yes I wish it was online). She is very picky about what answers she deems "right".
Gilkison's class is tough, but using resources like the textbook and unstuck ai can help. Lectures can be dry, but attending is key. Grading is picky, so attention to detail is a must. Overall, a challenging yet manageable course.
