She'll do anything for her class
Very pro-student. Highly recommended.

Has favorites! Favors the conventional lit. types and all the brit kids.
Excellent! Really cares about her students and does an outstanding job of drilling in those literary terms that are so tedious.
English instructors don't come any better - she's one of the most thorough markers there is, adores students who work hard and try their best, AND she is absolutely committed to teaching. She definitely deserved her student teaching award.
Shes insightful, amazing, knowledgeable, kind and wants to teach. You will KNOW how to read and write at the end of her course. VERY approachable. Highly recommended
The hardest marker I have ever come across. Insane! I recommend NOT taking her right out of high school-- you'll think all profs are this hard, and it isn't true. Really nice lady, really good lectures, really hard marking.
Very good prof. Very helpful and cares about her students. Marking is fair (but not easy), which is good if you intend to major in English. I would definitely recommend for English majors, but not if you just need an English credit.
Toughest prof I ever had and way too hard of a marker for a 200 level class. On essays in other classes I was getting grades between B+ and A, but in her class I could barely scratch a C-, so don't believe anyone who says her marking is fair. One girl in my class was treated so poorly she cried.
Brilliant. Also warm, funny--honest, perceptive and fair-minded. unequivocal about writing but kind, respectful& generous towards students, no favoritism. All about excellence . Profound insight and humor--a great course. A real Prof. with vast knowledge & high standards- no postmoderm hack!. Best English prof bar none. Rich, and rewarding.
Margaret is a wonderful prof. She cares a lot about her students, and will do whatever she can to help you succeed. I loved her reading selections! An English degree is not complete without at least one class with Margaret!
I took 354 because it was compulsary. I took 354 with Margaret because she is a great Prof. She's tough but fair. You can't argue with the fact your work needs to be improved. No easy A's and you'll be better for it. Brings great enthusiasm and passion to any class.
Great teacher, very friendly and easygoing
really caring, helpful professor
Poor teacher who did a poor job of teaching the class, missed several classes without preparing the students.
A very sweet lady but she would often miss class (sometimes three in a row) with no notice or apologies. An insanely hard marker. You'd do best to skip her.
She is the best prof EVER! She's a funny little lady who LOVES her material. Her classes are great to attend, she is funny and charismatic. She does miss a lot, but how is that a bad thing? her marking in this class was not hard at all.
THE WORST prof at the U of C! She's an Unbelievably hard marker and her poor example of a professor.. she missed up to three classes in a row without an apology or a reason! Her negative attitude and general uselessness and very bored behavior/demeanor destroy any good in this course. I highly recommend everyone to stay away from her!
Prof Hadley is a very nice woman but she cancelled class all the time. We only had it once a week so this was quite damaging to the course. I found her marking very difficult - the entire class had to rewrite their essays more than once.
I was very disappointed with Hadley. She missed so much of our spring course I didn't learn much of anything and I'm still feeling the affects of it in my others classes where we are expected to know this basic material. I feel totally cheated.
Can not make a decision to save her life. She would stand in front of the class and ask us to negotiate the terms of our marks. This resulted in complications amongst students. She claims to be incredibly approachable, yet interrupts you every 5 words to interject her own opinion. Very picky about formatting assignments. Not recommended.
if u dont go to class she will hate you! called my writing pathetic and i was an A+ english student in high school! i had to get my papers appealed to pass the course. Completely unacceptable comments from a professor, who should really be encouraging her students and not degrading them like that. DO NOT go into her class, AVOID HER at all costs..
HORRIBLE AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS. She made me cry in class cuz i got D's on all my papers.
an incredibly hard marker, considers a B- a "good" grade. On the midterm she told us not to ask any questions. There was a big and obvious typo that caused confusion but she wouldn't let anyone ask about it. She is rude and picks favorites. Classes are not interesting. I took this as an easy option and it is the hardest course I have taken in Uni.
She is actually very knowledgable and only marks hard so that we take the course seriously. I ended this class with an A-, she is a fair marker and will go over things with you if you ask her. Cares genuinely about her students, opportunity to re-write your first essay sometimes occurs. I recommend her.
She is sweet and cares for her students and their interest in the course. She will give you any help she can and enjoys it. She seems to be a strict marker though. It will not be an easy A course, but I imagine getting a B will be no difficult endeavor. As some have mentioned here, she DOES believe B to be a good grade, but we all know it isn't.
She is so passionate!! Prof. Hadley wants others to love it as much as she does.
Hadley is an awesome prof. She is always encouraging of students and is always available for help. She is passionate about the subject which makes the class more interested. Her openness and understanding is refreshing. I will definitely take another course with her if I can and highly recommend her as a prof!
She is extremely helpful and knowledgeable!
Professor Hadley is a passionate, fair and challenging English teacher. She will make you work hard to improve your writing, but she is kind and reasonable. She is the best teacher I have ever had. She does miss some classes due to health problems, but she always has a good reason and gives as much notice as she can.
If I could chose another grandmother I would pick Margaret. She was an amazing prof, if you ever have the chance to talk to her one on one about a paper DO IT because she is super helpful and pretty much the sweetest person ever. :)
She is passionate about what she teaches! She did miss a couple of classes, but I don't think it hindered the class, it was actually nice to have a break sometimes. Alot of people thought she was a tough marker, but I thought she was very fair and much like the other english profs. She gives lots of comments and feedback....(you just can't read her
Awesome professor, so passionate about her teaching and the students are her number one priorotiy. cute little elderly lady who you wish was your grandma
beautiful person inside and out. Absolutely brilliant prof. and not the least puffed up about it like so many in English dept. Simply the best prof you will ever have-belongs at Oxford or Princeton. The real thing. I will never forget her or the lessons she taught me.If you want to learn, take Hadley's courses. For PC 'cant' take somebody else's
Overall good prof, I just wish she would use blackboard. All assignments had to be completed, so it was unclear if any assignments were missed.
Stellar Prof. One of the best in the English department. Tough but fair. If you pay attention and put effort and insight into your writing, she will reward you. She's also open to creative projects as alternatives to essays. Brilliant.
The prof was the nices prof I have ever meet. I hated how I had to take an english class and didn't do very well in high school english. She made everything so interesting and when you go for help, she gives you alot of input to both improve your writing skills. If you need a english course, take it with her!!!!
Doctor Hadley is an amazing prof. She is very passionate about her work and that is evident in everything she does. Kind and approachable, she makes the experience of interpreting and analysing literature very enjoyable for anyone who is willing to put in the effort. If you've heard anything negative, question the source.
She is an extremely wonderful person. I learned that I wasn't as great of a writer as I thought and she took the time to help me improve my writing. She actually said that she would be there for me if I ever needed help in my university career. She can be a hard marker, but loves classroom contributions in discussions. Wonderful person and class.
Really nice person, really helpful, as everyone has said. Difficult to read her writing! I started out thinking I was a great writer, and she told me that as well, but I'm still horrible with essays. My marks on them improved marginally.
She is a very hard marker, but she is also incredibly sweet. It wasn't always the most interesting class, but I would definitely recommend her as a prof. She will drastically improve your writing skills, and she gives great advice.
Really sweet kind women who was both realistic and willing to cater to her students. She has high expectations in her marking, but it only pushes you to do better. I liked her a lot and would take a class with her again.
Amazing professor, so passionate about teaching. She is very clear with what she will tests and what her expectations are. Classes are very interesting. Best English teacher by far.
350 characters isn't enough to comment on Professor Hadley. Amazing prof in all aspects, from her teaching to the time & care she invests in her students. The material I learned is invaluable, will serve me the rest of my university career. She expects a lot but it only pushed me to become a better writer. Brava Professor Hadley!
I loved attending her classes, she is a fantastic person. Her class discussions are very engaging and she makes an effort to get to know each of her students. However, she is an extremely hard marker! and the writing assignments she would give in class were near impoosible to complete in the allowed time. in short great prof but harsh marker.
Very sweet lady and a great prof. Marking is really fair.
Kind lady who cares about how well you do in her class. Very easy marker. Hands down best english prof at the UofC
Maybe it's just that I enjoy poetry, but I found this class much easier than I feared. Margaret is a delightful lady, very helpful, and will make an effort to give you chances to improve your grades. She is not an easy marker, but every mark lost is lost for a reason, and she will help you a LOT with essays and projects if you ask.
Took this fiction class in the spring to catch up in degree. She dislikes people who don't like English and just take it b/c it's required (aka everyone). Also, it's really easy to get on her bad side and after that you're done. Accused me of academic misconduct on my essay because "it was such an astronomic improvement", then gave me a C anyway
Super nice lady but when she says that her class is not for the passively indifferent, she means it. Input in class discussion is really important as she makes notes and includes it in tests.
Absolutely awesome prof. She pick awesome texts to read and I was always engaged in class. Super helpful, I would highly recommend!
Margaret is an absolute treasure. If you have a chance to take a course with her, do so. She doesn't give marks away for free, but she is generous with how she allocates them, and she will teach you everything you need to get an A, all while making the class an amazing place to be. I would take any class she taught, hands down.
Margaret Hadley is hands-down the best professor at U of C. She is clear, extremely helpful, and very good at getting the class into the topics. You have to attend class to understand how wonderful this woman is. Oh and she made us cookies in class... I would take any class with her again.
Extremely enthusiastic and passionate. She's like a granny, and I really loved how she got to know everyone in class by name and face. Respectful. I thought she didn't like it if you gave an analysis she didn't like. I think me and her had a bad relationship so I didn't find her helpful, but she is helpful. Really good prof. It's a fun class.
Amazing English prof. You will do well in the class if you attend lectures and take notes on what she is saying. All tests and essays are basically straight off what she says in lecture. She's extremely helpful if you're confused. I also liked how she takes time to get to know everyone in her class!
The marking is a odd, much like an elementary school quiz. Questions on the midterm only included factoids like how much did someone's letters weigh? How does that have anything to do with whether you understood the material? Two short essays, but you have to follow her style. The material was interesting but not a gpa booster.
Hadley is a tough marker for her essays, and exams, she looks for very specific answers. If you attend class, make sure you participate as she likes people to. Also sit closer to the front as it's really hard to hear her, she likes to put class discussed questions in her exams and midterms as well. There is limited time for her midterm and exams.
She is definitely a hard marker and so was her TA, her midterms are difficult because she wants precise answers to the smallest detail in the text and not general answer which shows we understand the concept. She is helpful if you go to her office hours. AND SHE DID NOT POST ANY OF OUR GRADES ON BLACKBOARD, JUST OUR FINAL MARK FOR THE TERM, tsk
She is a good prof and class was enjoyable, however she is a VERY hard marker and unfair at that to. She doesn't really give a fair explanation for the mark, and expects A LOT from the student's writing. Personally I wouldn't take another class with her. not GPA booster at all.
Very hard marking prof, should have dropped the class. It seems that she favours the students that participate in class. Her TA is more of a hard marker than her. Highly advise anyone not to take the class with her.
Simply the most wonderful professor in the world. Brilliant, caring, passionate about her subject. Hadley is one of the very few great scholars left --at this campus at any rate. Only take if you prefer to get a first class education, instead of postmodern drivel.
LOVE Professor Hadley. I'm actually very sad the class is over. There are a lot of assignments but they are all marked fairly and the students are given second chances to write and improve. Professor Hadley is very kind, always wants to learn more about her students, and she makes her class interesting and fun to attend. Loved every minute!
Good teacher, clear, concise and British.
Great Prof, I'm not much of a public speaker but for this class from day 1 I sat in the front row and participated in class discussion. Attendance and participation matters a lot with her and it will help your grade by the end of the semester. All in all, this class was an absolute pleasure to take.
Terrible professor very unfair when it comes to marking, take the class with another prof if you are taking this class because it is a degree requirement.
Professor Hadley is a really good professor, but it's a lot of work to pass this class. Pay attention, go to all of the lectures, and make sure you understand all of the books really well!
Hadley is a very old fashioned prof who expects too much out of her first year English students. Lectures were dull, the text was dry, and she is a very tough marker. If you take a course with her, you will have to put all of your effort into her class. Find a different prof to take English 201 with if you expect anything higher than a B-
Pretty straightforward. Show up to class, do the readings, and you're good to go. She gives lots of feedback on your papers, and makes sure you know what the expectations are before assigning you anything worth a remarkable chunk of your grade. Her handwriting is impossible to read.
English is a tough class for me but Professor Hadley made it bearable. I considered dropping the class but when I approached her with my concerns she was incredibly helpful and went above and beyond, I am glad I had her as a professor. She expects you to attend each class and it is very helpful with analysis exams.
Prof. Hadley is a very knowledgeable, strict, old-fashioned instructor. She teaches with enthusiasm. However, for a 201 level class I felt like it was not an easy grade. The tests were on a different difficulty than expected and the expectations of the papers were very high. Prof. Hadley is a great choice if you like to learn and sweat for your A.
Very strict. Is not clear with her grading criteria.
I was hesitant to take english but i'm glad I took it with Dr. Hadley. I asked for help and she gladly helped. Her tests are based on what she says in lectures - so take good notes. As for essays or assignments, write clearly and concisely, do not use big words, and peer review it. Come to class everyday and listen, she likes people who do !
Great professor! Would take again!
Margaret Hadley is a charismatic woman who makes lectures really fun. I took her course in the spring and her extended lectures passed quickly. As long as you put the work in, you'll do well.
Very clear, understanding, and knows what she's teaching- a respectable yet fun prof! Work load was very reasonable considering that it was one three-hour class per week. Two tests and two writing assignments, and readings were interesting.
Very hard course, very liberal prof and lets everyone know her view before asking for others views. Literature is tough and old, very little modern language is discussed. Definitely a English Sciences teacher which made the class very frustrating. Tests are very tough, make sure you take notes on the in class analysis of the stories for the exam
VERY VERY VERY HARD MARKER!!! i took it last semester, i tried, i went to writting center, and i dropped at the end of the semester! she is absolutely profound, but if you are just taking it for requirement, don't take the class with her. I feel like 15 of the class either dropped or failed........
Margaret is a wonderful professor who truly cares about her students improvement and grasping of the subject. She gives you a chance to improve your mark and provides fantastic feedback. Her lectures are enjoyable and she engages the whole class. I would highly recommend any class with her as long as you're prepared to put in a little effort
Margaret was an Amazing Prof. I come from a science background and I hated English in high school. She actually got me to start reading for recreation. Definitely a hard grader on assignments, but if you are willing to put in of that extra effort and see her outside of class, she will help you get a higher grade! She rocks!
I had a lot of health problems this semester that caused me to miss class (no participation grade), and she HATED me for it. She singled me out in class for not being there for no reason (joke's on you, I knew the answer). I found her quite mean and I think she grades on a whim. You also can't read her handwriting.
She genuinely cares for her students but she's very nit picky and a tough grader. The entire class failed her quiz and she pretty much blamed us, her tests can be impossible at times. Margaret is subject to be moody sometimes so beware but she's generally a nice woman. Go in to see her during office hours because you cannot read her writing.
Very cryptic when giving out suggestions or advice. You can learn from her lectures but really there isn't a whole lot of lecturing going on. How she puts students on the spot and then criticizes them is at times unprofessional. If you take a class with her be ready to be called upon and have a thick skin. Avoid if you can.
Margaret Hadley cares about literature. If you don't, then you won't get an easy A or an A at all, its simple. She expects you to improve your grammatical and english skills which is what her class can help you in. She also goes in depth with the reading and its not quantity, but quality she expects from you. Summarized, not easy but you learn.
I loved her class and her as a person. She is the sweetest lady! Her assignments are really clear about what she expects to be done. If you need help she is always willing to help you in her office hours (visit her). She is a tough marker, but she helps you improve your papers and writing skills. I highly recommend taking a class with her.
She takes the time to know everyone by name. In class participation (discussions). Tough grader but fair. Gives good feedback. Accessible outside class, but book an appointment. I liked her class and would consider taking another course with her.
