BORING CLASS.
I had little interest in the class and found it quite dull, but the professor was obviously knowledgable. She was a competant teacher and made a valient attmept to make the subject interesting.
not the best class in general, but a good teacher who obviosuly knows a lot. Her notes are very nicely laid out and out onto blackboard VERY helpful for the tests! also she let me take a midterm late because I was really sick, very considerate person!
i mean, the classes were pretty boring, but she definitely knows her ****. and all in all it wasnt too hard
Yes, this class can be very boring and long, but honestly it is a breeze. Her MC test questions are straight from her Powerpints which she posts online. There are 4 exams of 40 questions, and no final. I study the night before tests and have averaged a 94% on the first three exams. If you put any effort into this class you will get a good grade.
The class is extremely boring. Professor Sereno is very boring and paces while she lectures which makes me really dizzy. It was a waste of money for me to buy the textbook, I read the first assigned reading, & never read anything past that & still did good on the exams.
Very boring teacher. Class was pointless since she read off her slides. All slide shows were posted online. Don't bother buying the text book, you wont need it! Only 4 tests throughout the course and no accumlative midterm or final. She scales each individual test and then curves the final grade at the end so the majority of the class receives a B-
Horribly dull class. All she does is read off her slides (which she posts online) at supersonic speeds. SHE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH.
The tests are easy and as long as you memorize the powerpoints you can get an A
someone needs to tell her that it's a 200 LEVEL CLASS!!!! way to intensive
Class isn't really necessary, since all the test answers will be in her slides. There is some cool material though.
She TALKS VERY FAST. I hate it when she goes back and forth, back and forth between slides, you can never take good notes. But she is very helpful during office hours. Great lady, knows what she's talking about, not really that great of a teacher
Very nice, she knows a hell of a lot. On the other hand she can be a bit redundant with her lecture. It is true (like others have said) that she can be a bit dry, but its really only boring if you aren't into the material; she does a fine enough job. Plus, the text book is rediculously priced, but you dont need it! everything is on the slides.
I think she may be one of my favorite teacher that I have had here at the U of O. I found her to be extremely helpful especially during office hours. I really struggled in this class, and she took every effort to help me out to prepare for the exams. I would take another class from her and would recommend her as well. very nice and very helpful.
Boring Boring Boring. All she does is read off her slides. Looks very anxious.
Dont listen those who tell that you dont need a textbook! Half of the midterm question not related with her slides at all. I did not pay to much attention to the textbook and it was a mistake.
She knows a lot and would like you to study hard and understand the concepts. Otherwise it is hard to get a good grade. The class was fun and I learned a lot, office hours were were helpful.
Such an easy class. I only attended class to take the exams (there are 4 and one score is dropped). She spells it out for you with her study guides -- literally all you need to do is read her study guide and go through her power points from lecture and the exams are very easy to pass.
Super easy class but feel asleep in probably every lecture. She has clicker questions in class but you don't even need to get them correct to get credit, the tests are easy if you simply review the her PowerPoints she goes over in class that she posts to blackboard. This class is one of the easiest ways to get a science credit.
This class is pretty easy, but extremely boring. She strictly reads off of her slides, and her tests are based off the slides as well. She curves the tests, but this class almost put me to sleep every time.
One of the worst teachers Ive ever had. She knows a lot about psychology, but from a teaching standpoint she is absolutely horrible. She reads off her slides, and goes too quickly for you to take notes. her mono-toned voice puts you to sleep after the first 20minutes. Attendance is required (Iclicker) quizes every week w/ZAPS. 4 Exams, none drop.
Dr. Sereno is extremely intelligent and knows what she is talking about to the "T"! She does unfortunately drone a bit, though this is difficult when talking about psychology to a bunch of people that don't care. Quiz questions resemble each other far too closely, often differing only by a word or two, so it can become a guessing game. Long class.
I really enjoyed Professor Sereno! She would always listen to students questions even in a 500 person lecture hall and always had a happy personality in class. There are 4 exams (just study the slides and they are pretty easy), Iclicker questions, and online quizzes. Great way to get a science credit! Can be a long class, but really interesting!
Sereno really wants her students to learn, but her lecture slides move so fast that it is impossible to get good & complete notes. However, she posts her slides online beforehand, and it is best to take the notes and copy the info before class, and then listen to her speak and read them over during. There are four exams and no final, pretty easy.
The class is very reading based but her lectures were really key to understanding the content. She's kind of brainy but has a good sense of humor and is very good at communicating complex ideas. Studying for tests is essential. The weekly quizzes shouldn't be so many points for 3-4 questions but that's the only thing I could fault.
I was really excited to take this class, Margaret ruined Psychology for me. Boring long classes, only need to be there for clicker questions. Not an easy A do not take if your not a Psych major.
Absolutely LOVE her. I'm a psych major and transferred here expecting "meh" classes and she made my term. She's organized and clear and helpful and you really learn a lot from the structure she provides. Take her class. She really wants you to do well and learn.
The lectures are pretty boring, but you need to get the iclicker points. A lot of examples she uses are on the midterms including the videos. The mid terms are very fair and everything on the test has been on the powerpoints. The weekly quizzes are very easy points, just read the labs. Not a sure 1st round pick but is a steal in the later rounds.
This woman is a the worst kind of professor. She only requires books in her classes from a certain publisher. A little digging reveals why ($). Her class is based on iclicker questions and basic literacy. She requires students play guinea pig to psych experiments, attempted to prevent me from graduating when I refused to be an unpaid test subject.
Lectures often times put me to sleep and they are mandatory for iClicker points...I'd like this class a lot better if I didn't have to attend the lectures but that just isn't realistic. Prepare to be in a room with 500 students, 100 of which won't stop talking, 350 which are on their phones/laptops, and 50 of which are actually paying attention.
Lectures are not engaging or enjoyable. Tests are extremely difficult, only positive thing is that she curves them, which is the only reason I think I'm going to pass this class. Your grade is based off the exams with only 5% participation and 2% extra credit. Would not recommend.
I would recommend this class if you're a psych major, otherwise it may be a struggle to stay interested. In order to enjoy/get good grade in this class do these things: Sit in lower section of lecture hall, understand that the material gets easier/more interesting as term progresses, and know that everything on test will be discussed in lecture.
Ok, so Prof Sereno is a great person, smart and very nice. She is there for you if you put the effort to contact her, though her lectures are pretty boring she is trying to make them more entertaining with videos and class engaging activities. Tests can be sort of tough but if you read and pay attention they are very easy. Would recommend.
Professor Sereno knows an incredible amount of material about psychology. However, she struggles to keep her students engaged and present the material clearly. I think our first exam had nearly 150 terms we had to learn. Exams are 70% of your grade, and they are tough. If you are not passionate about psych, stay away from this class. PLEASE!
She really needs to be updated on technology. We were often left just hanging out while the professor tried to figure out a way to get a vhs to work or complained about technology. This class was a huge disappointment. For many students this is their only exposure to Psychology. I'm sure a lot of students were no longer interested in the subject.
Wow Dr. Soreno is such an amazing professor. She really cares about all her students. I am so inspired by her. Will take her again for sure. Thank you so much
Personally, I really enjoyed PSY 202 more because it deals with social interactions, personality and psychological disorders, but it was really interesting to learn about the anatomy of the brain, neurons, language and sensation/perception in PSY 201, and I thought Professor Sereno gave excellent lectures!
Dr. Sereno is a wonderful teacher! She teaches the material in a very systematic and clear way. The thing I would say to anyone before taking her class, is that there are 4 exams total. In order to do well on the exams, it is necessary to study the lecture slides until you memorize them. If you are 100% committed, the class is easy and fun!
Talks for the entire class time, no engaging activities. Sometimes doesn't even cover material on the exam until the day before. Not sure how this class falls into the psychology category but is more science than anything relevant to the major. Strongly discourage psych majors from taking this course as it will not pertain to you.
I thought Prof. Sereno was a great lecturer, she was a clear speaker and her tests were fair but pretty easy if you paid attention in class and went over the slides.
I wish I could give this professor the benefit of the doubt but I can't. Test are super hard, lectures are painfully boring and she doesn't seem to know her material. Every time a student asks a question, she ponders on it for a minute and then says, "Good question, I do not know." It's urking!! To pass exams be prepared to study for a long time.
Dr. Sereno gives amazing lectures and is always available for office hours. Her knowledge of psychology is extensive. However, this does not mean she doesn't have trouble answering students' very specific questions. Tests are by no means difficult. You do not have to read the textbook. All is covered in the slides. Attendance via iClicker. No lab.
She is the most disengaging teacher. She always has clicker questions on stuff she has never taught us. She is monotone and you there is no logical flow to her slides. Her study guides are like someone just puked up random information and then threw it on a piece of paper. She really needs help with engaging students on a personal level.
LOVE HER!!! Her class consists of four exams (no final) and 5% participation. Its very test heavy but she curves the class hard. This term an 82% was an A. Her lectures can get a tad boring but overall interesting and one of the better psych professors!
Awesome professor. Everything on the tests are on the slides; does a good job of outlining and organizing material. There are four exams but they are easy if you paid attention. Won't need much study time for this course.
she changed the entire weighting of the class during week 8 of 10. She claims that she mistakenly messed up the weighting and that it didn't match the syllabus, however it would have been wonderful to have that issue resolved during week three. She should have just left it. Exams worth 70% of grade, change in weighting caused my grade to drop 12%
To pass her tests, you must study. It is all on the lecture slides, but it's heavy. I would be cautious because, in the last week of the term, she changed the weight of the grade book and caused everyone's grade to drop by at least 5%. She tried to find ways to make it up, but she put up a bit of a fight. Nice lady, just be wary of her grading.
Aside from the incident with the grade weight change, she was a fair & interesting prof. Do not skip class- all of what you need to know for tests is in lectures. I barely read out of the textbook at all and still got an A. Her classes are supposed to be 2 hours but she only keeps you for 1.5. Be diligent about the research reqs. Overall easy.
Read the syllabus and textbook, that is all you have to do to understand grading and material. There was a misunderstanding with how grades were reflected on Canvas (which does not always show an accurate grade), but percentages were clearly outlined in syllabus. Prof allowed reattempts on midterms after this mistake by some students. Very generous
One of the most boring and bland teachers I've ever had. I was typically dying to get out by the end of class. Do all the readings or you won't pass.
Absolute worst teacher. Her tests are not related to the study guide. I studied for 3 weeks and got a D on my midterm. Examples of what you talk about in class are the subtractive and additive colors. Study guide just says colors. Test questions are in a room of 201 students if the person next to you is shaking uncontrollably then what shoes are on
For the entire two hours, she reads directly off of the slides. It is useless to go to class because we could do the same thing. She doesn't teach, she reads. Her tests are pretty normal except the sensation and perception. She gives a HUGE list of things you need to know and tests you on one topic. I do not recommend her.
Professor Sereno is amazing! One of the few professors I've had that seems to really care about the students. The end of the winter term was very chaotic but she went out of her way to make sure everyone succeeded (she even dropped the lowest test grade!)
Be prepared for sudden changes in the grading percentages with little explanation. Participation points are very difficult to figure out for 5.5% of your grade.
Professor Sereno is very test-heavy. There are four mid-term exams, none of which are cumulative, but are easy so long as you study for them. Most questions are directly off the slides, so don't bother reading. Other than that, this is your very standard lecture class: inquizitives due every week, online labs that take 5 minutes. Overall easy class
A pretty typical lecture class. If you read the textbook and study a lot, it is easy to pass. She is eager to answer questions and explains stuff well with examples. However, it is a little test heavy, given there are 4 tests that are worth a lot of your grade.
She's a good teacher overall, def passionate about psychology. However her grading was mostly test heavy, 4 exams ( no mid-term/final) which was worth a lot, and if you do "badly" on one/two and completed everything else you probably won't get an A. She doesn't do extra credit which sucks. Definitely watch the lectures and take notes!
70% of your grade in this class will come from 4 midterms which are closed book. It was frustrating because if you do bad on one your grade was basically tanked. Read and take notes on the textbook for sure! Also she does not do extra credit so that sucks.
Avoid at all costs.
I truly do not understand all the negative reviews for Dr. Sereno. Yeah, she's dry, but exams are all MC and so straightforward that you do not even have to read the book. All the questions come directly from her slides (don't use her study guides, they're useless). All the other assignments were simple - if you show up, study, then it's an easy A.
There were 4 major exams which were all relatively easy. Her lectures were hard to follow, even though I've taken the equivalent of this class before. The homework program she uses is very frustrating. Her TA wrote all the exams and when said TA gave a guest lecture, it made more sense than Margaret's usual lectures.
Worst professor. 4 midterms and a lot of the questions weren't even taught in class. Her study guides were absolutely no help at all, and were confusing. She also doesn't know how to work the grading system so the grades are messed up until she bothers to fix it. You basically don't know your actual grade until way after the last exam
The most boring teacher ever, just reads off the slides and shows videos. Tests are super easy and honestly, if you study even a little bit you can just skip the lectures altogether and you'll do good.
I don't know why there are so many negative reviews on here. I thought Professor Sereno was really nice and clearly cared a lot about the subject she was teaching. Her teaching style didn't match up with what personally works for me, but theres a textbook with all the same info thats given in class so you can always figure out anything confusing.
Lectures were long and dry, and the material is pretty dense. Gives breaks half way through the lecture, so that helps.
her lectures are IMPOSSIBLE to follow. Barely explains anything just reads slides,4 exams worth 60% of final grade and the whole class is failing them. Textbook and slides barely help. Exams on material not taught/random details of material. Only take this class if you're going to dedicate all your time teaching it to yourself.
This class is ridiculous for a 200 level. The distribution of grades should not be weighed so heavily on the exams. Lectures are heavy, boring, and not useful. I've studied longer for each exam and have done progressively worse on each one. Don't take with her.
Reads off of the slides without giving extra context. Insane how my hardest class this term is an intro class. Im hanging on for dear life. I've spent so much time studying for tests yet I seem to not do much better every time. Tests are tricky. Her study guides are also extensive and horrible.
Lectures consist of her reading off of slides with clicker questions spaced throughout. She ONLY tests on things that we go over in class. I have a really short attention span and paying attention in class was difficult as she's not an intuitive lecturer, but I aced all of the exams just by memorizing the bolded terms in the slides the night before
Lectures were boring, was just her reading off slides for an hour and a half. It was hard to pay attention. There was no time between the 4 exams so right after you finished one you were prepping for another. Her study guides were probably the most unhelpful thing ever. Class was easy enough but it is hard to stay all in for the term
TAKE 201 WITH SOMEONE ELSE. it'll be easier. Everything is based on the 4 scantron exams studied SO much and still got bad grades. She does not help anyone, doesn't respond to emails, and the exams are nearly impossible because they're all trick questions. BAD for a 200 level. I put my whole soul into studying for this class and it didn't help.
Exam reviews were not useful, the class avg for the first exam was 70%, this is not because the students don't pay attention. These test scores directly reflect her quality of instruction, and it is horrible.
Extremely long lectures, slideshows have no flow and feel as if she is reading out of a dictionary compiled with the most confusing ways to explain a term. Studied for hours digging around for defintions because her study guides are just terms with no further details. No sample questions, nothing. Class average is 70% she believes its not her fault
The lectures drag on a lot and she just reads straight off the slides which is painful but attendance is mandatory (iClickers).
Talks very very fast, doesn't know the answers to most questions, ignores ppl trying to ask questions, doesnt take feedback, the midterm had a 60% average in a 300 person class and she just said we didn't know how to learn, never answers her email, not flexible, unpassable without a good study group bc you will have to teach yourself
Doesn't explain material well at all. All of the students failed the midterm, and she thought it was funny. Doesn't give a good study guide to prepare from, and majority of your grade is from 4 midterms.
I'm a psych major and this class is boring and repetitive. The instructor is not tech savvy, so get prepared for slides that you can barely understand and downtime during class while she figures out how to play the video. The content itself isn't hard, but she explains it in a very complicated way. Only take this class if you have to.
If you need to take any psychology class, choose a different professor. The lectures are a drag and are not engaging. Attendance is mandatory. Reading the book, watching Crash Course videos, and making your own study guide to retain the material is better. The class average for exams is often low and she resorts to blaming students, not herself.
I am studying for the 4th midterm as of right now, I took one look at the 400 line study guide, and decided I should cook Margaret on this site instead. Quite possibly the worst professor at the University of Oregon, I walked out of every lecture early because standing outside in the rain gave me more purpose than to listen to this nut-job.
This is the same person from the previous post.Margaret should pack it all up and go teach elementary school, reading the words off the screen should not give someone the professor title. All of Straub 156 clowns Margaret instead of listening to her (except the try hards in the first 3 rows) Ive heard nothing but bad things from my fellow students.
Her teaching style is outdated, lectures consisted of her reading off of her slideshow. If you need to take PSY201 do it with a different professor. To pass the midterms you pretty much need the study guide memorized. Much of that material you are going to need to teach yourself.
Professor Sereno knows the subject, but lectures aren't fun or enjoyable. Slides are info heavy and repetitive. She also speeds through them. Attendance is mandatory (iclickers). IDK how this class has anything to do with PSYCH. Grades are unpublished and based off of 4 exams, so idek what I even have in the class rn. Assignments feel pointless
Pretty nice teacher just lacks organization, always running behind on lecture subjects but also was somehow letting us out early for half of the term. All the tests &study guides were based solely on the lecture slides. External assignments were not always helpful or would not be assigned at the same time that the topic would be covered in class.
Don't take this class with her, especially if you're not required to take it. Your grade is based on 4 tests, which consist of the most random material. The only reason to go to the lectures is for the clicker questions. All she does is read off the slides. Also, when my class didn't do well on one of the tests, she blamed it on COVID (what?)
4 exams, the moment you finish one you're studying for the next. study guide was the most useless thing ever as it was just chronological order of the bolded words on the slide. don't take this class with her unless you really have to. spent all my free time studying for this class.
Dr. Margaret Sereno was a good lecturer and made the class slides easy to follow. There is a lot of material but she makes it easy to access. If you just do the work and readings it's a pretty easy course, though it will require some time on your end.
Literally the worst! Do not take this class with her.
most boring class I've ever taken, professor doesn't really do much just reads slides and clips through them, I would rather watch an episode of Talk Tuah podcast and do the missed class stuff, feels more worth my time.
This class has made me never want to take a psychology class again. It is not intro-level content, and nobody does well on her exams. The averages in the first two exams this term have been Cs. You will learn nothing, no matter how much studying or note-taking you do. It has been the biggest waste of my time, money, and energy.
Get ready to never stop studying for this class. The lectures were extremely boring and made my almost lose my love for psychology. The class averages for the midterms were always Cs or Ds and she would never own up to the fact that the low scores reflected her teaching. Lectures are also her reading off of the slides for 2 hours.
The professor just reads off slides, and is completely unorganized, to the point you're basically being tested on the material before being taught the material. While also practically having to teach yourself the information anyway.
All lectures are so long and boring just for her to read right off the slides. You will be teaching yourself everything. She will also assign you things before she teaches them to you. Sereno is a sweet and caring person but the course and materials are very unorganized. You have a better chance taking the course with a different professor.
Four midterms each with awful long study guides filled with concepts and terms you must have perfected and know how to apply. Midterm questions are extremely difficult and very unexpected. You will have no idea what questions you are going to receive. I have not met anyone who has received a grade above a C on midterms very frustrating class.
Lectures are painfully dull, and graded quizzes will be on chapter 6 when you're learning chapter 5 the same week. The professor dismissed all concerns in emails, blaming students for consistently low averages instead of improving. Posted study guides are useless, and you're left teaching yourself. This class is chaos; avoid it unless you can't.
Doesn't explain ANYTHING, attendance is required but she just reads off slides. The homework doesn't line up with the class you're always reading stuff 2 weeks in advance it's so annoying. 3 midterms and a final all of which have poorly worded questions, and she blames students for low averages. Very slow and boring lectures. Avoid her at all costs
The lectures are boring and the slides she displays are confusing to read sometimes. The assignments do not relate content you learn; you do the assignments one week and 2 weeks later you learn the content, vice versa. Her study guides are just a HUGE list of words. 4 exams overall & blames the low averages on students. Get ready to teach yourself.
Horrible, the class knew more than her. One of the worst teachers I've had
This class is the bane of my existence. Sereno is a very kind and intelligent lady. But, omg do the presentations suck. Lectures are so beyond boring I fight the urge to fall asleep every day. Study guides for exams are so crazy confusing and don't relate to the exams that I spend hours studying just to get a D on the exam.
I was nervous after reading the reviews, but this course tests your studying and note-taking skills. If you take notes and have good study habits, it is a decently okay class that won't stress you out. Sereno doesn't interact with the students (besides answering questions) and lectures for almost 2 hours. Extra credit on tests! Must buy iClicker!
Pretty boring but pretty easy. Studied for 3 hrs for each lecture. Wasn't sure why everyone hated her
Extremely hard to reach outside of class, did not make the content engaging (super boring lectures slides), study guides do not explain the concepts and are often confusing, overall I just taught myself most of the content and didn't gain anything from her as a professor. Her score is low for a reason!
Sereno gets a bad rep because the lectures are boring and monotonous. But the study guides are pretty straightforward, and if you study all the terms (it takes a while and lots of prep that most people don't want to do), you can do decent on the exams. The class is a lot of work and studying for a 201 class.
The lectures and readings are so out of synch, she doesn't really seem like she actually looks at canvas. Midterms were all multiple choice with no final but that was really the only good thing about the course.
Her lectures are super understandable. Her slides are extremely useful to study with, I didn't even take notes because of how organized her lectures were as notes. I found other people doing this, too, in class. She is more than happy to answer any questions and is super patient, especially during her office hours! Couldn't recommend her more!!
Extremely test heavy, easy to fall behind with one bad grade and not have the flexibility of redemption.
Not a difficult class by any means, though I came into this after taking AP Psych in highschool so I had some knowledge. Did a good job trying to keep us interested in memorization-heavy content. As long as you read the textbook for a bit each week and take notes you will be fine.
She was pretty chill, basically your grade was made up of the multiple choice tests, had to do an inquizitive and zaps lab every week or so, as well as research participation outside of class. The classes were all lectures and were pretty long and boring.
lectures are boring but other than that she's not bad. attendance is taken on iclicker and she does 4 exams instead of MTs and a final which I actually liked; all multiple choice and relatively easy. very assignment light class and an easy a. if you did ap psych in hs its the same thing; nice refresher course and mandatory for psych majors anyways
Pretty disgraceful that this professor isn't rated higher by most. I thought she was a great teacher and the slides were super helpful for understanding the chapter content. She's one of the better psych professors at UO. Nobody likes InQuizitive and ZAPS labs as assignments but she probably doesn't control that.
I loved her! She knew her stuff and was very passionate. I was able to follow her lectures easily and learned a lot from the class. She has 4 tests, but she curves them and provides lots of extra credit, so it's not bad at all. She was super supportive and really helped me in the class. Her lectures can be a bit dry but the content was interesting.
horrible worst teacher at oregon
Doesn't really teach. She reads straight off the slides. The study guides for exams are so extensive that they'll leave you studying for 6+ hours at least.
Margaret did not elaborate on lectures at all. Slides were minimal info and boring. The tests are multiple choice and difficult, she does not curve. To be fair this course is material heavy but she doesn't look at your assignments through the textbook. You have to obtain sona credit that is mostly in person, so try to get that asap.
Very disorganized course; she reads directly off the slides and gives no further explanations on the content. Course is exam-heavy she wouldn't review content and would assign homework right after an exam on content we hadn't learned yet. Expect to cram information in 36hrs and self-study because her teaching is not useful for retaining information
I feel like this class was an average introductory class, most big lecture classes are graded on only a few exams so i feel like that wasn't too unexpected. As long as you use the study guide and get the online stuff done you will do just fine. Margaret tries her best to be engaging but it's hard w/ basic intro stuff
Lecture-heavy course with basic introduction material, so it can be boring and hard to focus, but if you do the online assignments and take some notes, it's pretty straightforward. The online homework is an easy way to help your grade. The lecture slides are also a good tool to study for exams.
She isn't a bad teacher, but simply just reads off of her lecture prompts. The class consists of very boring lectures and tedious homework but it isn't too difficult.
Assessments are worth 65% percent of your grade, and the Inquizitive homework assignments are my number one enemy. Very nice woman and I enjoyed her lectures but it is hard to remember and understand certain concepts that are taught within the class. Overall fun though but would never do again.
This class was much easier than I expected. The powerpoints are easy to follow and almost all the concepts connect and make general sense. The hardest part was the Inquizitive assignments. If you study the materials on the study guides it is easy to pass. Just make sure to pay attention in class as the exams are heavily based off of lectures.
Class itself is pretty easy. Weekly inquizzative and ZAPs assignments. Lectures are long but content is easy to understand. Professor is really sweet but can be boring because she just reads off the slides.
