She was tough in 801, but I was really prepared for the other composition courses. I have since transferred to CSUDH and I still use the writing techniques she taught me. Looking back, I now see how really great she is.

Dr. Shannon is an awesome teacher. She gives150%. Her style gets the point across and drives it home. There should be more like her!

If you can pass her English 1 course, you can be assured of turning in stellar papers for all of your classes. Currently on maternal leave, take her if you want to produce quality work on par with students at expensive universities.

Dr. Shannon, taught me so much in the six weeks of class than I learned my full semester with another instructor. She gives her all to each and every student. She made me rediscover my love for writing and I can not thank her enough for that.

There are a couple great English professors at LBCC, but Shannon will have to be the best. Her enthusiasm is almost overwhelming. She wants to help you, so if you have a question or problem don't be afraid to ask. She will go over an essay for an hour if you let her. One of the most brilliant people I've ever met. She made me want to write better.

Cool teacher she cares about your grade as long as you care. There is a lot of work to do essay after essay and then a big research paper. So if you dont have that time then dont take her class. She does talk aboue herself but if you know then you know that it can be relevant. It is all critical thinking so have to know how to do that.

Shannon is an unconventional teacher. She may repeat herself, she will joke a lot, but she is very real. After taking a class you will feel like you know her. She knows her stuff and if you pay attention you may learn some invaluable information.

I think people misjudge her. She does have a lot to say, she can take up the entire period. She is available when you need help. I'd say she is a wise woman. The best English class ever! The readings were good, the lessons were clear, and the endless talking that others complain about is really endless examples of how to shift perspective. It's still a tough class, but I've never seen a class retain 100% of the students. Tip: watch out for themes in readings and be sure to annotate for future reference.

I love this woman. If her lectures were available on the radio, I would tune-in regularly. She really has a gift and utilizes it with current events. Words cannot describe what a great experience taking her class has been.

Great Professor. She gets really into the subject matter, and relates it all to life. She has high hopes for everyone, and admittedly, can be kind of harsh in criticism -but she means well, and will do anything to help you better yourself if you show you really care. Go to the writing center, and write about stuff you care about and you'll be fine!

One of the most influential teachers I've had thus. Her lectures can last the entire class and very little work was actually done in the classroom, but she is full of wisdom. An aspiring comedian, preaching the ugly truth. Willing to help students. She also shares a lot of her personal experiences. Be ready to read and don't slack off.

I loved Dr. Shannon, but I wouldn't take her again. Her class was a lot of work. There were 5 essays, 1 oral, daily readings & journal entries & a final. She's an easy grader & very helpful and keeps the class interesting but there were too many readings & the journals were comprehensive. I wouldn't recommend to anyone with a full schedule.

Simply put, Dr. Shannon has been by far my favorite Professor I've ever encountered in a college setting. She was difficult-essentially to weed out the weak. Doctor Shannon is the definition of what any great Professor should be. Such an inspirational professor! She will roast you, but she'll give you helpful feedback. If you expect or like linear style lectures and prompts, don't take her. Her lectures are more life stories, however, it always ties into her essay prompts. Prompts are very "loose" encouraging a more creative and broader approach to writing essays.

Professor Shannon is the BEST professor I had. Her methods in writing, as to finding the "Golden Mean" has made things more clear. She insist you to be argumentative in writing; The course is Creative Thinking. Her course will be helpful for Science Majors. Her class may be challenging but your writing skills will improve!

I put 4 as a difficulty because I took this class in the summer. Best English teacher I've ever had. She grades papers fairly in my opinion and profoundly cares about her students. Gives out many great writing strategies and examples in her required writing materials. Lastly, If you are offended by vulgar jokes, don't take this class.

Best professor I ever had! She was my Eng 3 professor last summer 2017 and her teachings and lecture still stick with me. She is as honest as she can be and she goes the extra mile for every student in her class. She'll really put in the time and effort to make you succeed. At first, I wasn't gonna stick around for the whole semester as she is quite out there. That said, she grew on me a lot. The collection of texts she created for the class are intellectual gifts. She always tries to help out in office hours and also writes great tips on essays. She probably cares too much. An extremely smart gem of a human at LBCC.

Dr. Shannon is perhaps one of the most intellectually gifted and passionate professors at LBCC. An outstanding individual who seemingly truly cares about what students get out of the course. I've never had a professor who put so much effort into providing useful feedback on writing.

IF SHE LIKES YOU SHE WILL GRADE YOU HARD!!!! She is boderline a philosopher, which will upset many as this is english, and although she doesnt seem very collegiate, she is the poster child of neuvo collegiate professing. Open, blatant and honest. If you have to take a prof and want a challenge and growth, take this professor!!!!!!!

Honestly, she's really out there and in your face but the best thing is that she will go in depth with your essays. She gives a ton of feed back. As long as you don't go into class expecting to half ass everything you'll be fine. She even helped me with my UC essays after I had been out of her class for a year. She's truly helpful. Grades fairly.

Yes, there is plenty of reading (it is an English class after all; each class period you go over the reading). There were four at home essays and two in-class essays when I was in her class. No, don't have your phone out because you will be called on it. Yes, she is an amazing teacher; participate and you'll do fine in class.

Dr. Shannon is definitely unique in a good way. Gets off topic sometimes but still manages to make strong points. I miss her class and there is no prof more devoted than her. If you need help reach out she cares about her students. Essays aren't too hard and her feedback is very helpful. Class not hard if you try hard Good prof, great human being.

If you're easy to offend, this probably won't be the professor for you. However, if you have a more "bold" sense of humor, you're going to love her stories. At the same time, she'll get on your case about knowing exactly where you're going and what you plan to do, in a good way, so you're not just squandering your life. She's an absolute treasure.

Dr. Shannon is great! She gives you a ton of feedback and excellent advice throughout your essays. That is what I was looking for in an English 3 professor - I wanted someone that would point out my flaws and help me become a stronger argumentative writer. This is college, not high-school, so get ready to read and discuss adult conversations.

Take her class! Dr. Shannon is one of the most dedicated professors that LBCC has. She is genuine and actually cares about her students. She has ratings of being too inspirational or not teaching how to write in the class, but let's be honest, if you are taking English 3 or 1 you should already know how to write. You shouldn't want to be babied.

Absolutely wonderful and influential professor. If you want to actually learn and think for yourself then this is the class for you. She does speak about her personal life but its applied to concepts and ideas of the reading and the class. Although most people with negative reviews most likely did not understand which is not her fault. Best prof.

After developing my critical thinking skills, I now understand what she was trying to do in lectures. She is a BRILLIANT person. Her lectures won't seem to pertain to the material but they DO; just do the READING. If your critical thinking are not developed, you might have a bit trouble but try your best. I regret not paying attention in class

Best professor ever. All the bad reviews are from people who refused to work hard. YES! Dr. Shannon is a human and she has human emotions. God forbid she voices them in class. She calls people out and isn't afraid to speak her opinion. She is who I aspire to be. Take her and your life will be changed!

Dr. Shannon is a great teacher. I took her class this summer and she was by far the most attentive instructor I have had. She consistently provided valuable feedback and I often wondered if she ever took breaks to sleep as I would turn in an essay at midnight and find it graded with thoughtful feedback attached by 6AM Class isn't hard if you work!

Hands down, the best professor at LBCC. Yes, there's work.. it's a 4-unit English class, but an A is within reach. Dr. Shannon provides all the guidance needed, and most importantly, you will become a better writer.. just be smart and leverage her feedback. It's a class that matters, as many professors ding papers for poor writing!

At first I thought I ran into my own failure, but dam was I wrong! Definitely it will be difficult but not too much, coming from someone who does not know how to write and loves to do their papers 3 hours before it due, it doable. She is hands down one of the best professor I have taken so far, she tested my abilities and made me a better writer!

Dr. Shannon deserves more praise for what she puts on her lectures. You will be amazed for sure if you PAY ATTENTION to what she asks you to read. There are a lot of useful life lessons but none of them are boring. Essays are not challenging as long as the grammar is on point and the outline meets the criteria. She doesn't judge your argument EVER.

A true diamond in the rough! Your only regret will be that you didnt taken her class sooner. Take her in the morning so shes just had her coffee. Both Hilarious and inspirational, she teeters between comedian and philosopher. Be prepared to think, and to read, and to update your world view. Stay away from her online class, youll be missing out.

She is very passionate about English and she truly wants her students to succeed. She gives a lot of extra credit throughout the class and her feedback on essays were very helpful. My class started in-person but ended online because of covid but the lectures I had mostly talked about her life stories. Her feedback is brutally honest so be ready lol

Dr. Shannon is a real gem in the CC circuit. We are truly blessed to have a professor of this caliber teaching us. Its a challenging and refreshing exercise in argument. She is well versed in debate and formulation of ideas. She will not hold personally held beliefs against you, as long as they are properly presented and articulated. TAKE HER!

Dr. Shannon is hands down THE BEST English professor I've had at LBCC. Her classes are rigorous, but they are difficult enough to push you beyond your comfort zone & expand your horizon as a writer. She cares deeply about the success of her students, but it is important to put in effort and HARD WORK into her classes. Overall, an amazing professor.

She's definitely a character, tends to ramble off subject but it can be interesting to listen to her stories, took her for a SPRING 2020 semester that changed because of quarantine. Read the assigned readings and interact in the discussions and you'll be fine, she definitely gives detailed feedback, extra credit, and is always available to email.

This class went beyond my expectations. Dr. Shannon is a very talented and experienced professor. She has filtered out excellent reading material for this class that allowed me to broaden my knowledge and wisdom. She always tries to give detailed feedback on the essay draft, which gave me a much deeper insight into writing better essays.

There is a lot of material to read , but guess what-- the material is as fun as the class. The material is cultural , relevant, and mind opening. Besides the criteria . Dr. Shannon is hilarious and witty with alot of sarcastic jokes. She offers alot of extra credit and if you are just willing to do the work , you'll pass

Professor Shannon is the best English teacher I've ever had. Great conversationalist when lecturing; although she goes off tangent BUT connects it so uniquely back to the topic of the lecture. Her jokes are hilarious but not for everyone if you don't like humor then don't take her class. Her essay prompts are straightforward & quite interesting.

Professor Shannon is great, you will learn a lot from her. I'm not a big fan of writing essays, but because of her, they're a little less scary now. Do the work, don't take shortcuts and you will do great.

Dr. Shannon was the best professor I have had. She comments on everything, constantly giving you feedback and encouragement. I took English 1 for Winter so it was a LOT but she makes it almost impossible to fail as long as you do the work. Bonus points are built into the discussions and essays so even if you aren't a great writer you can get an A

Gives great feedback, lots of bonus point opportunities, clear expectations, and grades quick. Seems overwhelming at first but you'll adapt to the workload. Stay on top of your assignments, readings & due dates! She makes it very possible to get an A, please learn from me! Overall, she's super helpful and puts lots of effort into her course! 10/10

I took her for Eng 1 & 3 , with 3 in summer for a 7 week semester. It's a lot of homework but as long as you get things turned in early she gives a LOT of bonus points. And if you keep an A throughout the term and finish things early she usually excuses the final. Pretty cool teacher!

Loved her! She had so many resources in academics and personal growth. Her papers give you a lot of freedom, so I didn't have too much difficulty writing.

Great professor! Their is no way that you can fail this class. It is very possible to pass with a high A. Im terrible at writing essays but she helps a lot and the bonuses also help with all assignments! Turn in everything on time and youre basically on the right track to getting an A. Id definitely take her again.

Since it was asynchronous, it was really just "read the stuff, do the assignments, write the essay". But that was fine because every assignment and essay was given well thought out feedback, and you could go to office hours to help.

Two words: EXTRA CREDIT!!! Do all the extra credit, get Cs on quizzes and essays and without a doubt you will have an A. This was for an online format (and I would suggest for you to take her online). She talks A LOT and post way too many announcements. Also, TOO MUCH information on her modules. It gets confusing at first. But shes very loveable.

Dr. Shannon, a sharp, brilliant, and irreverent woman, positively impacted my life. Her classes changed me profoundly. My perceptions shifted. I suspect my brain rewired itself. And I picked up a few more writing skills on the way to academic essay mastery, too. Invest yourself, and Dr. Shannon will invest in you.

Tons of extra credit if you engage & participate. Most emails and announcements offer "hidden extra credit" so its beneficial to read through all of them. Dr. Shannon gives great feed back on your work which is SO MUCH help if you struggle with writing like I normally do. I probably would have ran away from English yet again if it weren't for her.

The way her class is structured you have no excuse to not get an A. Tons of extra credit and lots of time to do assignments. Just be prepared for class. She is very energetic and talks a lot. She will do anything to help you though so if you are struggling she will help any time.

Amazing professor and person. Dr. Shannon cares deeply for her work and students and this shows in her inspiring, productive, and funny lectures. I promise she is unlike any professor I've taken..it was simply life-changing. Other than this, she can be a tough grader but she offers LOTS of extra credit so you have no excuse not to pass.

Professor Shannon gives you a real taste of what university actually has in store. She gives excellent feedback on essays/discussion posts and is super encouraging. She is truly unbiased when it comes to topics you are allowed to choose when writing essays. As a student at USC this is an amazing class to improve my writing and critical thinking!

Professor Margaret Shannon was an excellent teacher. She made the course very clear in her detailed syllabus, offered many extra credit opportunities to increase your overall score (take advantage of them, they pay off at the end!!) The online course was completely manageable and I would recommend to anyone.

Great professor, definitely learned a lot, was very intensive and fairly difficult to navigate as there were many different collections of readings. Assignments had a lot lot lot of instructions, sometimes it ended up being quite confusing, but if you want to learn concepts then it's a great class. Critical thinking for discussions and essays.

(Spring 2023) She's a character! The lectures were one big conversation (sometimes entertaining), and I was always left wondering when the actual lecture would start. However, during her office hours, she was a completely different professor, and I actually learned something! Her feedback is gold! She'll motivate you to write your own life story!
