oh man, it was her first semester, I don't know yet, But at the beginner,. she is so sweet, and trying her best to explaning. Well, over all I think she is ok,
No. Don't even thing abt taking a class with her. Her class is NOT organized at all. She just reads the notes written by other instructors. Quizes are tough and her lectures are useless. She doesn't know anything about teaching. She dsn't know how to prepare students for test. There is no hope in her class. She has no control of the class. BIG NO.
this teacher is new and does not know how to teach. i really dont enjoy her class. DONT TAKE IT!!!!!!!!! She Sucks
She isn't too bad. This is her first time teaching and she is using another teachers material to teach... (not the best idea) But she is very helpful durring office hours. Her lectures are boring because she just reads the notes and copies them to the board. Just do the smart thing... take Physics at another school. Pierce has a bad physics depart.
HORRRRRIBLE TEACHER!
Second semester she has taught, I read the rating from the first semester I can not believe she was that bad, She is a young doctor PhD from Cal Tech, she must be a fast learner. Because she must deserve a 5 for most improved. Is really nice and is helpful. Take her, you will not be sorry.
She is a good teacher, she really does care. In all honesty her lectures are hard to understand; however, if you meet her during office hours she is very good and explaining things one-on-one. I would recommend her.
ummmmm. what can i say?!! shes a good teacher. she does care about her students and tries to go over the concept if u ask her to do so. her sylubus is good too cuz everything is divided and final is only about 25% of the grade. her lecture is sometimes not clear and tests are sometimes hard. overall, shes a good teacher.
She's new and her lectures are hard to understand. She gives too much work, very hard grader, and her exams are very hard. Though if you visit during office hours, she will help you with what you need.
Lots and lots of homework. and she collects all and grades them. Her tests are hard. Her lectures are a little confusing. You have to do all the reading before the class. You have to learn everything by yourself. Don't take her if you are a lecture person.
Way too much work, and she grades all of it. Tests are very hard.
EXACT same 100% same as physics 006, same consepts at the same time, i know this becaue i took phys 101 and phys 006 concurrently, (because phys 101 for uc transfer purpose, oo6 for hawai'i transfering purpose), and it is the EXACT SAME content, only difference is the prerequsite for each class, and the text book used.
Really opened up as the semester went on. Brilliant. Generous grader, clear expectations laid out. Cares about teaching. Exams are cool: straightforward, but emphasize *real thinking*, not just regurgitation. Must ignore subtle arrogant smirk when she makes difficult problems look easy. TO DO WELL: READ, DO HW, SHOW UP EVERY DAY, AND *THINK*!
That was one hell of a class!!im telling u all its a lot of work. you need to spend 40hrs a week for this class lol.she is a very smart person and honestly cares about her students. shes availabe pretty much everytime that u need her but exams are not straightforward at all. you have to think and if u be lucky, u can answer 4questions in 2hrs.
Not having so much experience but willing to help you understand the concepts.
NOT RECOMMENDED!!!! for 101,102,103!!
Not an easy teacher. To get a good grade you will do about 10hrs of homework every weekend. But..she is always there to help, you can email her or goto her office. She is still a fairly new teacher. She loves physics and she will do whatever it takes to help you understand it.
Took 101,102,103 (A,A,?) with her. Tests are usually very similar to class/hw problems. Don't need to memorize equations/constants. The problems from the book and tutorials help much more than lecture. NOT as much homework as everyone says if you can manage your time effectively. A lot of it can be done in class. Maybe 2-3 hours of HW per week at h
i took 101 and 102 with her.Its not an easy class. a lot of hard work. however, eventhough shes young and inexperience, shes willing to do anythign to help u. u email her a question and shes gonna write a 3-page respond in less than 10min.!! i would definitly recommend her for those who are gonna go into engineering field.
Even though it was an 8 week summer session, she was always around whenever I had problems with homework. I would definitely recommend on taking this professor if your a rookie in this subject.
Her tests are literally hell, she can't teach to save her life. Her homework and tests don't even coincide. She also assigns TONS of homework each week, as if we have no other life than just physics.
Didn't understand her lectures, the book taught me a lot more than she did, tons of homework that didn't show up on the test. She's nice, but that's not good enough to teach, unfortunately....
i liked physics and i was good at it till i got her class and then i just hated it.
Book is a giant workbook that teaches you by asking the same questions in different ways. Totally useless. Teacher will not answer your questions either. Class focuses on workbook 100% but only worth about 10% of your grade. Whole class hated her due to her being completely useless. Had no control over the class - acts like a 1st year teacher. D-
Personally, I love Dr. Wessling. I'd marry her. Her classes are difficult to say the least, but the subject matter makes it that way. If you ask for help she'll give it to you. The Exams are from the homework and at the same time aren't. She wants you to think; all the principles are there but you have to really! know them to work some out.
do not take her
took phys 101,102 with her lectures are more of a group discussion .always ready to help, wants u to think, so does not readily give the answer in class, but its a different story if u go to her with difficulties during her office hours. exams are based on homeworks, tutorials and lab, but not a copy, so u need to get the concept. lots of hw though
Great teacher but a ton of work. Do not take her class if you are lazy but do take it if you want to learn.
Professor doesn't teach as much as she moderates the students learning through the incredibly interactive and easygoing workbook, putting together experiments and such. Class isn't too hard as long as you pay attention and do the homework. She doesn't help, she directs students to the correct path.
If you really want to learn Physics and are willing to spend your weekend for homework, this is a perfect professor for you. She is helpful, explain things clearly, funny sometimes and HOT (Yes, i am going to take her 102 because of this reason) Her tests were hard. Some of the questions on final exam were extremely hard.
Awesome awesome awesome. Be prepared to work your butt off.
best physics teacher ever,I havent seen any good teacher like her before, she really knows the physics and she really teaches you to how understand the material,I love her
This is as easy an Phys 101 is gonna get. Physics is a hard subject, but Dr. Wesseling makes the process of learning it as smooth as possible. She encourages you to ask her questions via email or during office hours and in class. She's extremely fair, and the classroom environment is very relaxed and unintimidating.
She is always willing to help you with the material at office hours. The material is difficult, so be prepared to study. Lectures pretty much follow the book. The coursework is difficult but the tests are a relief in comparison, a lot of conceptual questions involved. I would definitely recommend taking her, she is a devoted and caring teacher.
I am taking 101 with her, this class is a thinking class and conceptual than mathematical. She is dedicated but never tell you the answer, instead she asks series of question to get answer from your mouth. Her exams are nothing relevant to book, but mostly about tutorial.I wish if there is answer key for it or good explanations for my doubts from her.
Lots of Homework, otherwise you can't pass this class.she is really nice and dedicated, and hardworking to maintain this class .She teaches such a hard material which is hard to follow within 16 weeks for an average student.Don't take this class if you have an other course which needs a lot of homework.curves helped me get thorough this class with B
Don't take her !!
She is extremely intelligent, knowledgeable, and helpful. It is absolutely possible to get an A in her class. You have to work hard though.
I took 2 courses with her.She is absoulteley smart, dedicated, organized and hardworking. She makes this hard course smooth as possible. The material is hard to absorb and apply in a short time. Her exams are very conceptual and test the essence.Lots of homework so be wise taking other courses. She understands and care about her students.Take her!
Pretty cool teacher, she's willing to help but more than anything you have to do the work. Which is a lot and time consuming.
Extremely awkward. Is highly intelligent, but has difficulty teaching the material to students, who do not have a P.H.D in physics like she does.
extremely intelligent, helpful and dedicated.don't be afraid of the work load. All the work is designed in such a great way that you feel you know everything about the chapters after you get the work done.Tests are easy as long as you keep up with the class and actually study.answers all the questions.totally recommended for engineering students
Horrible teacher, but compensates for letting her students have formula sheets during tests. Again, only because she can't teach the material herself. Not recommended.
Dr.Wessling is extremely intelligent but she cannot teach what she knows to students who don't know anything about physics. She is awkward, the class is silent for the most part because no one gets what's going on. She assigns 8 categories of HW,worth 43% of your grade so if you want to pass, do the HW. Tests are super hard.
People, she is great! Yes its hard stuff and you have a ton of hw, but it really helps. She answers all of your questions and exams are fair and curved. Don't be freaked out she's a great person and teacher. Just be ready to work and you'll be fine.
Homework and tests are both hard and complicated , too much homeworks and she acts like machine.
I knew nothing about physics going to this class I did not even know what work is or what a vector was Its a lot of work but you learn a lot When you ask her a question she never gives the answer directly but she makes you think about it in such a way that you understand it instead of her just giving it to you Thats how you learn physics
Amazing professor. I had her for 101, 102, and 103 and got an A in all 3. The exams are difficult and there is a lot of work. I studied ~5 hours the day of an exam and almost always pulled an A. There is a curve if a lot of people did bad. She's nice and really smart. Highly recommended unless you have a busy schedule.
If you want an easy physics class that won't teach you anything, don't take this. If you want to understand physics, and be able to apply it, take Professor Wessling. I've never had a more helpful, patient, and accommodating teacher. She writes very hard tests, lets you have all the formula sheets you need, and always spends extra time helping.
She can come off as shy, but don't be put off by this; she genuinely wants you to learn and understand physics, and is always willing to clarify concepts and answer questions. Her class is difficult and a lot of work is involved, but she is a fair grader. As long as you put in effort, you will do well in her class.
One of the most worthwhile courses I have ever taken. A lot of homework; I spent 10-15 hours a week doing all the different assignments and reading. She is an extremely knowledgeable instructor who cares about her students; always available to clarify concepts during office hours, very helpful.
If you want to LEARN PHYSICS, TAKE HER. She is not easy, but very available for help. Struggled the whole semester but received an A. As an engineering major, I'm very happy I had this professor. I feel like she taught me how to think. Highly recommended if you are willing to work hard. Class does take up a ton of time.
Great professor! She answers all your questions, explains everything clearly and helps you understand physics, not just solve a problem. Very patient and professional! She does give tons of homework and different assignments, but doing them all helps get ready for the tests and succeed in the class.
you will not get an A unless you are super smart or have taken physics before no matter how much effort you put in
She give too much homework. She is very smart but doesn't quite know how to explain the topics so lay people could understand. Also, she's some what awkward. That's how I felt when I had to seer her during her office hours. Wouldn't recommend her.
She teaches relevant to how you will be applying it real life. She's not THAT hard in that if you get it inside and out, you should be able to apply it to any situation she gives you. People don't do well in class cause they get physics on a problem by problem basis, but not the core of it and so are lost when they get to the next question.
Dr. Wessling is what I expect from professors. Teaches you ,challenges you, is there to help you learn. Pierce is very lucky to have this professor in their physics dept.
If you are a physics major, take her otherwise, do yourself a favor and find a normal professor who doesn't give a 25% 16-page-cumulative final for 5 hours. She doesn't know how to lecture. She answers your question w/ a question and never gives you a straight answer. Look for outside resource/watch videos/read the book. Exams are from tutorials HW
Not the easiest professor, but certainly a great one. She is a bit quiet when lecturing which makes things a bit boring, but she is very capable and knowledgeable about physics. Even when we have bugged her numerous times for labs, she always was willing to help us to the best of her ability. Homework was long and hard but is good test prep.
Getting this class was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. Unfortunately, this class was the only class in physics 103.
Make no mistake, the Pierce physics sequence is extremely rigorous. 101-103 will be difficult regardless of who you take them with. Prof Wessling is extremely smart and well organized, and while the workload is large, she does everything possible to help students through it. She has great lectures and her tests are reasonable. Def recommend
She cannot transfer science to students. He answered the students' question with the question, which is more confusing. Instead of paying attention to understanding the students, she's focusing on scoring and putting pressure on them. She scores the students for each activity. That is, if you are not present in the class, you lose a score.
Wessling is a sweet kind-hearted individual, but she lacks the stamina to lecture clearly. She gives you clickers to use during class to answer questions on her powerpoint. She's not clear at all in explaining topics, and she makes you buy more workbooks, in addition to the lab manual and textbook. Her exams are concept-based, less math. AVOID!
Physics is really tough no matter who you take it with. Wessling is always very nice, willing to help, and she is very fair with how she conducts her class. The exams are challenging, but in a good way. If you understand all of the tutorials and homework then the tests really arent that bad.
Lectures are kinda boring but she is very organized with her notes and availability. Physics at Pierce 101-103 is difficult for most people, so don't expect an easy A (by virtue of the class, not the professor). HW is graded on completion but you need to study for tests, reading the book helps a lot. Overall a chill professor.
Wessling is one of the nicest professors Ive had. She wants you to learn and succeed. Lots of homework but its graded on completion. Exams are reminiscent of the tutorials, there is a curve. This class was very difficult, but I learned a lot and will take her for 103. If you want an easy Professor, you probably shouldnt be taking physics at all.
Wessling is extremely generous in the points she gives you for free with all the homework assignments. The tests are really hard, the most important thing to understand is the concepts rather than the formulas and the math. She curves tests but this is still a hard class because the material is difficult to grasp.
I had Professor Wessling for Physics 101 and 102, and both were a really great experience. Her lectures are extremely well put together (tough she can be a bit soft-spoken in her delivery), and all of the course material flows into the exams beautifully. Yes, the classes were very difficult, and a ton of work, buts that's the way physics is!
She is very knowledgeable in the course material and is very kind. She can be quite hard to hear if you sit in the back at times. She does group exams and a solo exam which helps your grade but i would not rely on it. IMO class does not get challenging until the end
Physics 102 is the hardest class at Pierce(no matter who's the professor). Boy was this class difficult. Dr. Wessling is very kind and a caring professor. Tests are very (VERY) hard. You have to read the book like its the Bible. Tutorials are super important for the test. Sit in the front or you won't hear anything. stay on top of hw or u will burn
Dr. Wessling is very nice. However, your question will almost always be answered with a question. I understand what's going on. She's leading you to the answer, but you will never get a straightforward reply. For someone that already struggles with physics, this quickly becomes tiresome. Lots of HW but it will help your grade a lot.
Spend a lot of time studying, read the textbook, and master the concepts in the classwork/tutorials, ask for help, and you'll do very well.
Good lectures and tutorials. Tests are extremely concept heavy but are easier versions of the written hw + tutorial hw. You're gonna spend a lot of time doing hw but she grades on effort not necessarily correct answers. This is a hard and time consuming class, but an A is definitely possible. Know concepts 100% and basic formulas and you'll get by.
Best professor for Physics. Tests are complicated but she grades the effort so you could be wrong and still get 100%. A lot of hw, but that's what's going to be on the test so do it. If you can take her, DO IT. She always replies to email immediately and she creates office hours based on your needs. She also changes the due date of hw if you ask.
gives an insane amount of hw and class work its almost impossible to do group work. i felt as though she relied on the students to teach themselves by reading the book because she basically doesnt lecture. not my favorite
I took her asynchronous online class and it was really tough. She does NOT lecture and most of the time spent in zoom calls was in breakout rooms. She assigns mountains of HW for each chapter. Expects you to teach yourself out of the book since there is no lecture. Maybe this class would've been different in person but it's impossible online.
Expect between 7-10 HW assignments per week and lectures that do not cover nearly enough of the concepts you will work with. Exams are fair, but they will flex your brain in a way that makes you dive deep into every aspect of the concept. Grading on effort is a plus and the professor is actually very helpful. spend 8+ hours on mountain of work = A
I took her both for Physics101 and 102 classes. As an international student and have no prior physics knowledge, her classes were very tough. there are one the most challenging classes in my life. I gave her 4 because she does not lecture. So, reading textbook is the key. However, make sure you ask her or tutors every questions you have. Good luck!
Wessling does not have any lectures, but lecture resources are provided to view at your own time. It is a very difficult subject, but Wessling is a decently fair grader. Please ask questions and use the tutorial and lab time to learn. Overall, Wessling is a decent professor, but do not expect things to be easy. There is also a ton of HW.
shes buns
Had asynch lecture, so cant attest to lecturing skill. Textbook is dry, consult outside sources if possible. Grades well w/ feedback; tests have test corrections & are curved; homework is completion based. Course load got heavy at the end of the semester. General consensus is mixed, but I liked her and will be taking her again
I was disappointed. She cares about teaching but ....doesn't anticipate misconceptions and if she made a few points more direct and clear, and didn't selectively withhold answer keys on tutorials, it would save a lot of time and frustration. I expected the class to be hard but had at least hoped it would be fun and useful. Buy Pearson Channels.
a lot of homework and didn't see it on the tests but some of the problems were fun
Lectures are dry and she will never give you the answer to any questions. You instead are supposed to learn by doing the group-based in-class assignments and lots of homework she gives. Doing all of the assignments she gives prepares you very well for the exams, which are very concept-based. Exams are heavily curved and have test corrections aswell
This is a hard class. Lectures are short (not super helpful), labs, tutorials, in-class problem sets are long. Expect to read a lot for reading quizzes. Group work happens every class. Tests are hard and lengthy, but curved with test corrections up to 5 points. I reccomend finding a way to do practice problems and/or go to physics tutoring.
Took Doctor Wessling for 101 and 102 and the classes are the same structure. All in class tutorials and labs are done in randomized groups. Alot of time will be spent on the weekly homework. Tests are curved but are still very hard and will require you to know a great amount of material. Wessling is knowledgeable and checks in on groups.
Dr. Wessling is an amazing professor. The tests are tough and the homework load is heavy, but class is designed to help you learn. One of the hardest yet most rewarding classes I've ever taken. Highly recommend it. Lowest test will be dropped, and she accepts late work with prior notice. I fell behind multiple times, and she accepted my late work.
This class is heavy. Exams are tough, and there's a lot of homework. You'll be doing homework every day until the semester is over. Her lectures are short, but the tutorials, lab, and homework make up for it. She grades on whether or not you understand the topics and can explain them, regardless of whether you get the answer correct or wrong.
I absolutely loathed coming in to class each day, every lecture was so painfully boring, the class is also very very long which didn't help with how boring lectures and the work was. There was so much homework due each day of class. I never want to take this professor again, lectures were confusing, and I often had to learn the material on my own.
If I were to summarize this class, there is atleast 1 homework for the entire semester including weekends. Even though I got an A, I had to look at previous lectures from decades ago that was provided in the class module to really get the material down. Very tedious coursework.
There will be a lot of work (At least 6 assignments weekly) but I promise each assignment already serves as studying for the exams. The exams are hard as they are heavily conceptual and some may require your own estimations. However, as long as you're keeping up in class and your work you will have a good foundation to do well. Square root curves.
Physics is hard. You can not slack; this is the first real STEM class for many people, so they are surprised when you have to put in real hours to succeed. Wessling is dying to help students, but people just rarely come to her, and she truly wants us to succeed. You just need to hold up your end. Do the homework, read the book, attend class.
Lots of homework and difficult tests, but will often curve, and she provides great feedback. Tests are focused almost entirely on explanation rather than numerical answers, which can be tricky but forces you to really understand what you're learning. The class is hard and is a lot of work, but would definitely take again.
Just take physics somewhere else. The grading on her exams can really tank your grades. She is awfully nitpicky and will remove more than half credit for absolutely no reason. Your wording is not exactly as she likes it? Good luck. If you ask for a regrade, you have to bring in more docs than the DMV requires.
At some point as a professor with such a high fail rate, I think you should take some time to reflect and ask what YOU are doing wrong--especially if you offer surveys on how to fix the department's abominable teaching. That being said, she inspires me to be the type of professor that won't gatekeep answers & actually help my students! ᕕ(⌐■_■)ᕗ ♪♬
Overall, the material is hard and there are many homework assignments every week. Her lectures did not help me much and the class is mostly doing group work. This class you have to apply yourself in a different way to understand the material. Exams are usually curved but she's a tough grader on exams.
If you're a physicist take their class if you're not then don't.
Thank you Dr., I have to retake the entire class. I'd advise you to select another professor if you struggled with 101. Only folks that passed her class with a high B or A had taken the class previously to my understanding. Im currently finding a 102 professor now, if you're reading this I'd truly take my advice.
