The class is a pain in the butt!! dont take it wat ever u do. u'll regret it. there is noway u can get a good mark no matter how hard u try.
i enjoyed her class. she speaks clearly and try hard to make the class interesting. midterms are not that bad if u read the book. but need to read it detailly. exam was ez.
Tries hard to make the class interactive and interesting and gives helpfull info for ppl interested in majoring in HR. Read the text not her notes for test, their test bank questions. Not a difficult class if you do the readings. Nice prof, if your willing to ask she's willing to help.
she is nice and uses a few different teaching methods. mostly text book material and 3 term tests that included 100 mc each which was overboard. fair marker on research assigment. overall good prof because she knows her stuff
Is an easy class but she makes it damn boring, I mean I could read the text myself. she also say she don't care if you come to class or not, but she really does, so you better go
Not a good teacher at all. She's boring and her assignments are unclear. Also, she doesn't tell you want you need to know for the final or mid term. Her tests are easy, but because she sucks, the are hard. Don't take this class if she the teacher.
Very Tough teacher. Her tests are tough and marks incredibly hard in everything. Before taking her class I read these ratings and when i went to class i though she was nice and easy and understanding and i though these ratings weren't accurate...a little advise, Its very accurate!
Her tests are hard, but she is a fair marker. Her classes are boring and she tries very hard to get class partcipation by asking questions, however no one really wants to participate. She does tell you what will be on the exam, gave us a very thorough review. Overall, a fair prof just a little on the boring side.
My fav prof so far. She gets that you are paying her to be there and wants to see the class do well and actually learn something. Group project is massive - choose your group carefully. Go to class or you'll miss the math. Fair exams and fair marker. If you study and work hard you can get an A.
I enjoyed her class. She's helpful and reassuring when you need help with the group project, and she had a subtle sense of humour that i enjoyed. Its nice when you have a prof that enjoys teaching, which she does. Average to difficult test, workload is a bit heavy: big group project and 10 page report
One of Ryerson's best profs by far!! Not only is she brilliant, knowledgeable and practical....but her teaching style is great if you like a teacher who is direct, and speaks the truth about everything. But above all of that, she doesn't take herself or being a prof too seriously which makes the classroom atmosphere that much more relaxing.
Teaches like she has something to prove which is distracting because your there to learn. Work load is silly, some not even worth doing Critique**. She marks hard but fair. Has powerpoints available but take out the slides with "testable content" in hopes of more effective teaching however you spend all the time writting the slide and not learning!
Great person, smart and funny. Class is not mandatory, but it is useful to attend. Marks fairly hard!
Great Prof, she knows what she is talking about.
Margaret is a good prof but her classes are so boring. She only reads of the slides (something we all can do on our own!!). There were many calculations that we had to do on our own with very little explanation from her. The workload is ridiculous and she marks reallly hard. Her midterm was sooo hard and never ending. She has high expectations
What is wrong eith everyone? I definitely consider myself an average student and i got an A in this class AND BARELY ATTENDED classes! The midterm is somewhat long but straight out of the text and not complicated at all...the only thing u may need to attend classes for are the calculations and i even got those off of friends and aced the final!
Great professor.Great person to chat with. Down to earth, funny and a fair marker. Do your share of the work and she'll make the course easy for you.
She is so adorable haha. He class was not hard but was not easy. You have to pay close attention to her slides. Definatley on my top 5 fav profs at Ryerson
1) reads off slides 2) hardly finishes off the chapters 3) midterm was easy as long as you read the the book thoroughly, reading the slides arent sufficient enough. 4) final was the same as the midterm
I have mixed feelings about this prof. She is extremely helpful when you speak with her one on one. The class is somewhat boring--a basic HR class that never really delves deep into anything. But, perhaps that is the nature of the beast. You will only be successful if you read the textbook, attend class and participate, participate, participate!
Easy class. Read the text and you'll do fine. Mid-term was long, final was easy. rsearch paper was marked fair. Attend class or lose participation marks!!! Only compliant is there was attendence was taken into consideration for participation marks.
Shes the worst prof ever! she gives no feedback to students what so ever. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Very nice lady! Read the text, in fact, learn the text book cover to cover and you'll fly through this class. Basic HR = a lot of common sense...treat others how you would wish to be treated yourself! Read up on Diversity and she'll warm to you straight away!
She was no help and unfair. Majority of the class didn't do well on the midterm b/c it was extremely unclear. she told those who didn't write the midterm that their final exam was going to be worth 60%. the final was VERY easy..so those who didn't write the midterm had it easy which is completely unfair to those who did write it and did badly
I had Margaret for 523 and thought she was great. For this course, nothing really changed except I felt the midterm was extremely easy but then the final was a bit difficult and surprising as it was extremely long and we had 3 hrs but I didn't feel it was enough for 2 long essays, 5 short answers, 5 calculations and 20 m/c.
She taught HR in the MBA program. She is a good lecturer but bad teacher. She knows her profession well, and has great insights and is able to engage a otherwise non-engaged class. HOWEVER she does not give timely feedback, is incredibly stubborn, and has ridiculous expectations. She does not give anyone a mark above an 80% and this is simply wro
This class can be interesting but in the way it's presented it's not. Just reads off the slides and doesn't explain more. Pure textbook course but easy mid-term/final. No need to go to class really but still recommended to take.
Seriously, it's all in the name. This professor can talk. Isn't very understanding, and the lecture is a bore. Defer your midterm and make the final worth a lot because apparently the midterm was brutal. Breakout portion of this course is a complete waste of time, as is the lecture - not sure why this course is mandatory. Professor is too annoying.
It's not her fault - the material is too boring. The only thing done in the breakout session is a homework check, although it can get fun because it's a small classroom. Margaret doesn't talk very loud but the class is never full anyways. You should be fine if you read the textbook without attending any lectures.
If you though BUS100 was useless wait until you take this course. The breakout sessions are waste of time, it is all homework check and icebreaker games. Group project is worth 20% of mark which is stupid, and there shouldn't be a group project. Easier than BUS100, and yet twice a stupid and I hated that course.
She's actually one of my favourite profs I've had. Even if the material is boring, she actually makes attending lectures interesting/fun. Amazing prof in my opinion :)
the material is too boring but the prof is a bit funny, no need to go to class just read the book and read the slides
Margeret is extremely funny and very kind. She has lots of experience with HR so she knows her stuff very well. The material is somewhat dull but attending class will make it better. Midterm is challenging but assignments are fair. Overall, I loved her
Professor Yap possesses unmatchable experience in HR and is perhaps one of the most reasonable and fair profs at Ryerson. She is very clear with her content and the midterm and final are very fair. Project is marked differently depending on the seminar leader you have. Overall, I would highly recommend this prof for HR.
Lectures are very clear and to the point. Her midterms and exams are all based on memory. The class demands a lot of time reading her notes and textbook to keep up. Her exams are difficult, but her lectures and slides are helpful. This class is a lot of work. Group papers marked fair.
She can be very dry, but my god its compensation management so I can't fully blame her. She can be partisan at time, and doesn't do the typically teaching thing of saying "great question". If you make a statement for one of her questions, she will ask people in the class who agrees with you and make a point out of your opinion on matters.
Really amazing teacher if you're taking MHR523 then take it with her
Prof Yap is amazing! Really enjoyed her class!!
margaret is a babe. she's straight forward in what she wants and if you do as she says, you're guarenteed a B or higher. the TA however marks hard on papers so make sure you correspond to him! This was my favourite course of the semester
attendance for the hour discussion was mandatory, not really mandatory for the lecture, but I went because she provides really good examples in class. Tests are pretty easy if you at least study for 2 days. there is a lot of writing to do but if you sit down and do it you can get a pretty good mark. I study off of her slides.
Professor Yap is the only prof who teaches compensation management, and considering how dry the material can be she does her best to make it interesting and mostly succeeded. She's very approachable with questions you might have and is happy to help with any concerns you may have during her office hours. A good HR prof!
B-A-E. clearly instructs what to expect on exams, COME TO CLASS because she does example questions & read prior to the lecture to further understand everything! her ta is a piece of work for the literature review so make sure you don't slack on that
Go to class, make notes, read your notes, get an A.
Margaret is a knowledgeable professor however she is not an understanding one. Make sure you follow all her rules or else you might get dinged on a lower grade for something extremely trivial.
Her way of teaching was good. She knows her stuff, but she's a tough marker and so is her TA!! Midterm and final was very hard. Many students didn't do so well. She did give a review about what to study , but since it was last minute you wont have time to study them all because the review itself is heavy. I wont recommend her. textbook not used.
This class was very tough, and her TA marks really hard for the group assignment. She also deducted 5 marks if your peer evaluation wasn't filled in properly. This course was just really heavy with information. I would recommend taking any other course for your professional course over this. Avoid it at all costs.
Everything on the tests are covered in class, so you won't need to buy a textbook. Tests were straightforward and fair. I managed to ace the course even by reviewing the material the night before, so GO TO CLASS! The only thing issue I had was that the TA who marks the group assignments marked very hard.
Very good and funny professor! There is one midterm (worth 20%), group assignment (20%) and exam (60%). You have to come to class in order to get more details about what is going to be on the exam. The group assignment is marked hard as the best mark in the class on that was only 81%! Overall, it was a good class and I'd recommend her
Margaret is a great prof and her lectures are very valuable, don't skip! Read the textbook before class and then go to class because she is good at explaining and clairfying any confusing points. The material is very heavy so study as the course goes a long because its very hard to cram. A 60% exam and little guidance for the paper are weak points.
I only had Margaret as a sub a couple of times last year but I REALLY enjoyed having her as a prof and would recommend her! I obviously can't speak as to what her exams and everything are like but her lectures were very interesting and fun! She is very energetic and gives good and relevant examples to the content.
Margaret is a great professor - she's funny, has a lot of insight and shares great examples from her real world experience. Lots of in-class assignments help with retaining and better understand concepts. Not too much difficult math although you do need a scientific calculator.
Overall, Margaret was a decent professor and her lectures, she did her best to keep the incredibly dry material interesting. However, the TA is an extremely hard marker, and the course itself is very content heavy, dry, and difficult. The midterm and final exam were very tough, and if you dont attend lectures, youre unlikely to pass
This course is really content heavy with a lot of concepts and theories to know, so you need to study earlier to prep for the midterm/final. She covers everything you need to know and give hints on potential test questions she'll ask, so go to class. The final is worth 60% with MC, short answers and calculations. Not an easy course, but good prof.
Amazing prof. Teaches everything with enthusiasm and cares about students. The final is worth 60% so attend all the lectures and ask any questions or clarifications you need to do well. Shes very helpful and i would definitely take her again!
Margaret is nice but the lecture is quite boring, personally I found the exams to be pretty difficult + she asks questions based on what she said in class so participation and reading are definitely needed. Group project was marked VERY toughly but I think the TA marked it though. Overall, eh, only take with her if it's your best option.
Classes were interesting as she was able to provide her personal experience in the field. Textbook is optional, studying from her lecture slides + speaker notes were enough. Her midterm and final are fair. She values student's input for midterm and final and discusses with us. Her TA however is a hard marker.
Her TAs mark outrageously hard. This class was taken online due to covid and seems like her TAs want you to fail. Her exams are harder than they should be (the short answers part). She says that you can pass the class with just her lecture slides but i recommend getting a textbook. if there is another option for a prof, take any over her.
This is one of my favourite professors. She shares her real life experience and has a real practical approach to her teaching - very helpful for those not currently working in the field. I think she is fair, accessible and engages the class well - especially since it is virtual. Her lectures are long and participation is mandatory. Fair marker!
Literally one of the hardest courses I have done at Ryerson and I just finished my 4th year. I'm not too sure if she's the one who marks the assignments or if it's her TA but everything is marked extremely tough. Questions are open-ended and when you apply your input it's classified as wrong. Better off taking another Proffesor.
The hardest class I've signed up for in my whole undergraduate history. Our cumulative grade is based on 3 components: midterm, group project, final. Paired with a TA who is an absolutely hard marker destined for failure. Never again. Margaret seems like a kind and knowledgeable professor though.
I really wanted to like this professor but she made it extremely hard. Both her midterm and exam were extremely long. She often asked for feedback but did nothing about it. And example would be when students said they had no time and she wouldnt do anything about it. Exams worth 50% if mark. Avoid this professor at all costs
Professor is not accommodating and not helpful. Class was only broken into 3 things, 20% midterm, 30% group project & 50% final exam. She asked what kinda format we wanted for the exam and totally disregarded what we said and added A LOT of content that took over 3 hours. The TA is no better, would avoid if possible
The only way I got this grade was from straight memorizing the textbook. She refuses to record lectures because she wants people to come to class, her slides barely helped. She pretends to care about students. Her TA harshly marks the group project AND the final exam, she doesn't mark or look at anything even if you try to email her to ask.
awful experience, asks students for feedback and doesn't take it. Please avoid this professor at all costs. lectures are dry, so naturally not a lot of people want to attend. her slides are an absolute mess
I had Margaret this past semester. Amazing prof despite the reviews. The course is about compensation - so of course, it's a bit dry but she makes it fun. Had a small class of 30 so it was good to interact with everyone, make sure you have a good group with people who usually talk in class. DONT need the textbook, open-book exam, some group work.
Took a compensation course with Margaret over the last semester and wish I had looked at her reviews beforehand. BIG MISTAKE. Unclear instructions, tough grading, and no matter how much work you put into the group project, she is not willing to give anyone a decent mark. I'm terrified for the final exam grade.
Just take another course
Picks on and is abusive to students. Textbook too easy for a university class.
I don't really get her bad reviews, she's a great prof! The course content itself is quite dry, but if you come to class and pay attention (take notes, etc) every week, she gives you solid hints for the exams. For the group project, know how to do a proper literature review and you'll be fine.
If there were 2 pills, one that might be harmful to me and one that is a chance to be in margaret yaps class, i would go for the harmfull pill.
Margaret was a great prof. She does care about her students' success if you are willing to put in the work. The group paper was marked a bit tougher, so ensure you and your group have proper citations. And for an 8 AM class, you definitely won't be falling asleep with Margaret's energetic spirit!
Her lectures are sometimes boring, and there is no attendance but I encourage you to go to class because she gives hints for questions in the midterm and final. The group project is easy if you have a team that is willing to do the job, her TA is always willing to help. But the final was hard, study from slides.
Not a good prof, lectures make you sleep, the exam wasn't the same as the hints she gave in class, rude, waste of money.
MHR849 is a content heavy class but she makes it easier to understand. Attendance is not mandatory but I encourage you to go because she gives hints for exams and shows slides she doesn't post on d2l. TAs can be tough graders though, so be sure to get a good group or make sure you connect with the TA. Overall great prof!
This class is by far the hardest MHR class I have ever taken, and having her as a professor sure doesn't help. Her classes make you want to sleep, and the midterm and exam are challenging for no reason. This course is very content-heavy, so be prepared to memorize it.
One of the most hardest MHR courses at TMU. Final exam was worth 50%. Which means if you did well throughout the semester, your final mark can change in an instant if you don't do so well on the final. She didn't post the calculation questions during class which shows up during the final. Have to be quick to write it down.
Exams are content-heavy and her lectures aren't enough to feel prepared for them. I'm also not a fan of how Dr. Yap teaches; for calculation questions, she verbally explains how to get the answer WITHOUT visualizing the step-to-step process. So, I found it difficult to follow along and take adequate notes for any math problems.
Easily the hardest class I've ever taken at TMU. The midterm and exam is extremely hard and her lectures is not well explained. After the midterm, the second half of the class is math based calculations which she will explain verbally. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Attendance not mandatory, but helpful as she explains her dry slides a bit better and sometimes gives useful test tips and hints. Course is not that difficult honestly if you study, the final was a bit hard but not too many curveballs.
Review - Professor Margaret Yap does her best to teach a dry but interesting course. Although attendance isn't mandatory, she will give bonus marks to those who attended lectures. Course material is heavy but she does provide clear examples. She also gives hints on what to expect for the midterm and final. Overall, not a bad professor.
super boring lectures that could be finished quickly if she wasn't a total yapathon with her personal life stories. had to attend tho cause she lets you know whats on the exam. unfortunately she's the only one teaching this class.
She's an amazing prof! All the bad reviews are def exaggerated bc if you come to class & take notes from her slides, you'll be good. She says stuff during the lectures like "can I put this on the exam?", after explaining a concept/question & giving a clear criteria of what she'd look for on the exam. She cares abour students and is funny too!
Not a good professor at all.
