This was the hardest course I ever took, but I learned the most
Perceptive, lucid, and articulate. An inspiring prof.
this was an amazing course, i recommend it to everyone!!
Intelligent and fun Aristotle class
No Comments
Reminiscent of the host of the Weakest Link--very entertaining!
class is full of misogynists and patriarchal collaborators... and some boys too
excellent lecturer, great class
intelligent beyond belief, to the point, amazing good information overload
She is phenomenal, this is the best class I have taken at McGill
Absolutely amazing, intelligent, clear, and funny. Very inspiring
she's bizarre, but great course!
Deals with controversial subject matter in an admirable way. Hard to dislike her
if only this course were 3 years long
the most incredible course pack ever. a brilliant class...philosophically sound
Interesting and chalenging material, brilliantly presented, and ever so clearly.
sounds just like martha stewart, close your eyes, you'll see. Fascinating class
The course was tough. I wish I studied more. She was a gooder prof that most.
She is AMAZING. Brilliant, clear, extremely intelligent... Very helpful. Will go out of her way to help... My favourite class EVER.
amazing prof! she has an excellent dry wit and is a brilliant person.
Awesome prof. Be prepared to stretch your mind!
You can't help but laugh in her lectures. She combines wit with intelligence in a way that makes the class a must. Material is difficult, but interesting
amazing, amazing prof. she's funny, knowledgeable, and a crystal-clear lecturer. the course material is mind-expanding.
Awful course, teaches as doctrine, not open to ideas which don't coincide with her own.
deslauriers is like a dream-prof. there is really nothing bad to say about her... she's super-knowledgeable and funny, the course is fascinating... in short she makes you sad to miss a lecture, which is rare.
My favorite class at McGill! A definite must-take. She's funny, knowledgable, and really approachable. This class did not necessarily change the way I think, but gave me the tools I needed to articulate my positions.
She has an amazing reputation that she didn't live up to. The readings were interesting, the class was boring, the TA's were horrible. Her course is too superficial.
Brilliant woman, course is very difficult and TAs suck big time. Course pack readings made me want to kill myself, but lectures were interesting. Make sure you're an expert on essay writing before signing up for this class. Very tough grading scheme.
deslauriers is a brilliant and engaging lecturer, and she really presents a broad spectrum of feminist thought... no matter where you're coming from, something will appeal to you. the downside: BRUTALLY hard grading... take it pass-fail!
Excellent prof - one of the best courses I've taken at McGill. Every second of her lectures are ridiculously interesting; very very smart woman. REALLY hard marking scheme though. A students should be happy with a B!
awesome prof, the key is to look at the tools that she gives, not the marks you eventually get. she wants very specific things - ask her what she wants, and you can get an A on the assignment, and really learn about reading and writing philosophy
Extremely interesting class, but grading is rough. I enjoy the class and it's worth consideration. But if you can use the pass/fail option.
Do not be fooled people! This class is interesting but the professor wants a b- average so half of you will probably fail. By the end of the semester you are so demotivated because the assignments are set up so you can not do well on them. Do not take this class if Deslauriers is teaching it.
Very ridiculous and a waste of my money. Teacher and TAs not helpful at all.
this class and this prof changes my life. YOU SHOULD TAKE FEM THEORY!!!! yes its hard, yes you will struggle, yes you will be challenged and frustrated, and at the end, you be will soo proud of your B. the only grade i ever really deserved i got from deslauriers.
Come on, she gives you tons of help with the papers and maybe if you were focused on LEARNING rather than getting an A you'd get more out of this class. Goes over everything twice, readings fascinating, hard assignments that teach you to be concise. If you're anal about GPA, take pass/fail.
Oh please GPA matters if you are going to grad school. Especially when you are working very hard and not getting good grades because the prof wants a low average on purpose. The class is not very rewarding nor is it motivating.
A fantastic lecturer: Interesting, concise, witty, SO intelligent. A great class! And by the way, for those who don't know and are complaining, the B- average is standard for all intro-level Phil classes. They ALL have it. Work hard, and the class is rewarding and will improve your analytic thought.
I agree with everyone else, she is a very intelligent woman and a great lecturer but the assignments are brutal!
I don't care how bright this woman is, the winter semester just began and I still didn't get my grade for the fall semester. Great huh? She must really care about her students.
Amazing course. Deslauriers is a concise and eloquent lecturer, no matter what you think of her assignments. She has a knack for knowing exactly how the class feels about the material, and always encourages healthy discussion and debate. Take the class, don't worry about the grade, learn a lot!
Ya I am also still waiting for my grade. It is January 6th! Knows her stuff but can't teach and she makes her assignments ridiculously difficult just to keep a low average. She doesn't really care either...
She's been teaching the same class for a long time and seems jaded by the material but she is one of those rare people you meet that you thank for merely existing in the world. Not only is she at the height of genius but the woman has just got it. Everyone who come to college should take a FT class.
this class actually wasn't that hard...to the person who says GPA matters if you're going to grad school: if you work as hard as you say and still can't get a decent mark in this class, then maybe grad school isn't for you...PS. great class.
She is amazing ! First you think she is thinking too much, or a bit in the clouds, but seriously she is there, and she will teach you philosophy in a crystal clear way. She also can be funny with her examples, and her reaction to them.
she's the kind of prof you WANT to hate because she's such a brutal, heartless grader (actually she has TA's do all her grading, which is kind of irritating). BUT she's also an incredible teacher and a brilliant parser of philosophy. it's all about pass-fail.
All through class, you just feel in awe of her extensive knowledge on feminism.
The most amazing class I've taken at McGill...she is a genius. So eloquent.
She was by far the best professor I have ever had. Even though the grading was hard, she was good about appealing an unfair grade. Take her class even if you think you are not interested, she is just that amazing.
Absolutely amazing professor. I'm so dissapointed that this class is over! Take as many courses with her as possible; you'll never find a more engaging, witty, intelligent professor. Assignments are difficult, but you will learn so much in this course.
Fem theory is the best class I've taken at McGill. This woman is amazing. She's brilliant and a really clear, interesting lecturer. I've never seen a prof be so on top of their stuff. She's intimidating as **** but really interesting and engaging to talk to. She's also got a great sense of humour/irony. But beward -- it's a damn hard class.
A good teacher, very clear in lectures. I like that she tries to shut down guys in the class who get caught up in expressions of their male angst, but she sometimes overcompensates & can come across as the caricature of a feminist rather than the real thing (which she very clearly is, despite this lapse!).
One of the best profs I've ever had. She knows her stuff. The lectures are fascinating. She's really funny too... But beware, this class is a GPA KILLER!! The assignments are really hard especially if you've never really taken philosophy.
Fantastic. Clear and concise. WONDERFUL! Her assignments are short but really make you work and think. Very rewarding. This class literally changes the way you think. Professor Deslauriers is amazing. Zoli is fab as well.
I highly recommend Prof. Deslauriers. I learned more from her classes than from anything else in my undergrad. It is absolutely worth taking any class that she teaches. She is brilliant and challenging, and you will improve both your writing and your critical thinking skills thanks to her.
She is nothing short of brilliant. Her assignments may be short, but they require critical attention and well nuanced answers. Moreover, they are only based on careful examinations of what she teaches you. Professors should be more like her - only test us on the concepts you've taught us. Definitely recommended - the woman's amazing!
Have taken several courses with her - Prof. Deslauriers remains my favourite philosophy prof at McGill, and one of my fave profs in general. She is brilliant, crystal clear and patient in her explanations, and cares that you learn to think. Her PHIL242 Feminist Theory course changed my life.
It is a pleasure to hear her speak. What a smart woman. Very intimidating. If you get behind on readings don't worry, she sums them up better than you could read them yourself but you'll get more from lecture if you read them ahead of time. Two short assignments based on one reading each and a take home midterm with specific questions. Recommend
Literally the best prof at McGill...hands down. She has become my role model. I can't get enough of her lectures! I wish I could hear what she has to say 24/7. She makes the difficult readings clear and gives great examples. Everyone is in love with her because she is funny, insightful, and extremely intelligent. TAKE ALL HER CLASSES!!
Amazingly intelligent, witty, and well-spoken prof. Her lectures are far from dull, and she will answer any questions you have. Hard marker however, she won't give away grades and expects effort from her students. Definitely a great quality prof!
She is a fantastic teacher, very knowledgeable and the reading material is interesting. An extremely hard grader: the average for our class was a B-. A great introduction to feminism.
She will open your eyes to so many things. She is a brilliant professor, and gives wonderful, engaging lectures. You won't want to miss class. She is a VERY tough marker(for reasons she explains on the last day of class), but if you are up to the challenge..go for it. Highly recommended professor. Take a class with her!! (your GPA can deal with it)
Professor Deslauriers is the most organized, intelligent, powerful, hilarious professor I've had yet. And she's actually really friendly and approachable!
meh. I thought she was OK--I would not take a class with her again. She's nice. She knows her stuff. She's an unreasonably difficult grader. Pretty boring. Will incorporate feminism into class even if it's off topic. Overall, I think she is overrated.
Fem theory was one of my favourite classes, however it was my hardest. The lectures and readings are really interesting and she does a good job of stopping to answer questions and relaying info in a more understandable fashion. However, pop quizzes in conferences are absolutely brutal and can ruin your grade. But great class !
10 years after taking her course, this is the one I still think about. I loved the readings and the way she handled the discussion. It's hard to see the relevance until you are a woman in the workforce and managing children and reporting to 99% percent male leadership.
If you are looking here wondering if you should take phil 242 then look no further. The answer is to take it. If you are looking for another course, consider that what I just said was for a course which lies outside of her specialization. Clear, entertaining, and brilliant. For grading, easy A if you are in phil otherwise it won't be so easy.
The best professor I had during my undergrad. I think I took every class that she taught, including two different courses on Aristotle. Even that she made fascinating! Teaches you to be a clear, clean, concise writer and to structure your ideas well. Her classes are well-organized, interesting and definitely worth the work. Highly recommended!
Great Prof! Lectures are not mandatory but you'll never want to miss them. Professor Deslauriers is clear, witty and interesting to listen to! Assignments are fairly graded, and she encourages students to come to her if help is needed, or you want a grade reevaluated.
Professor Deslauriers is absolutely one of the best professors at McGill. She is a fantastic lecturer, and I genuinely looked forward to going to class because her lectures were so fascinating and engaging. This is one of those classes that you will think about for the rest of your life- I cannot recommend it enough. Everyone should take this class
Great lecturer and person. Not an easy class nor too hard, will take this prof again without hesitation.
I would recommend that everyone takes PHIL242. This course was made by the Prof's engaging lectures and examples. The readings were interesting and I feel like I really learned a lot. Quite a few readings, but most of them are pretty interesting and definitely worth it. Deslauriers is my favorite Prof so far at McGill :)
Marguerite Deslauriers is absolutely phenomenal. She's such a smart, hilarious woman and her lectures make even the dullest, most inaccessible readings clear and fascinating. There is a lot of reading but the essays are short and you can do well if you put in the work! Cannot recommend this class or this prof enough. Seriously.
Marguerite Deslauriers is amazing and this was the best class I took this semester even though it was my lowest mark. I would've taken a Fail just for the opportunity to hear this professor lecture as it was so inspiring.
A course everyone should take. She is a wonderful orator, extremely charismatic, and at times, quite funny. Readings are important and reflective of history and today. A very important class. Took it as an elective, will remember it for the rest of my life. 10/10.
She is my favorite prof of all time, hands down. She is incredibly inspiring and will open your eyes. I was excited to go to class every day. There's no exams, just 2 papers and a take home final. Tough grader. Would 10/10 take again, absolutely loved her.
I was really looking forward to this class. Nonetheless, it was very disappointing to discover it to be very unorganised. She knows the content by heart and is great at explaining it, but classes are really boring: just take notes of her going over the readings, and have two lame assignments + final to test for it. Great feminist, mediocre teacher.
Deslaurier's lectures were a great way to delve into the reading. My experience is that the TA who graded my assignments was pretty harsh, but certainly still worth taking the class. Great class overall!
Took this class last minute as an elective and thoroughly enjoyed it. One of my favourite classes I took at McGill. Learned a ton, and it was a great intellectually stimulating experience.
Best professor I had at McGill - truly dedicated to teaching, and brilliant. Learned more with her than anywhere else!
A real gem of the philosophy department. Every class I've taken with her is so interesting. She'll teach you to be a clear and concise writer. She's not an easy marker, but it's definitely possible to get an A if you put in the work.
There is a LOT of reading (obv, philosophy class) but both the lectures and the material are interesting and easy to comprehend. Doesn't allow laptops in the class though (unless you have special needs), so if you're not good at writing at a fast pace by hand, you'll miss bits and pieces of the lectures here and there.
The readings can be quite dense if you aren't versed in philosophy, but Prof Deslauriers makes them incredibly clear in her lectures! Understanding the texts is also helped with once weekly conferences. Her and the TAs are highly approachable + helpful. Really respects each student and doesn't treat them like a subordinate, which I liked.
I walked out of every class re-evaluating everything. She summarizes the readings well in the lectures and you really only need to do the ones for the essays (3 essays total, 2 you can do with a partner). You get the final essay questions in advance and have 10 days. Not a bird course, but not super hard - essays can be tricky. LOVE the TAs too.
Readings can be heavy but her lectures are very clear and thorough. You can really focus on learning for the sake of learning in this class because there are only 2 mini-essays and an essay final to worry about. TAs held great conferences and participation was not graded.
This is a great class and the content is very interesting and looks at feminism through different lenses of race, sexuality, and philosophies. However, if you're not a big reader don't take this class. The readings were 10-50 pages every single week and could be very difficult to keep up with. The prof is great she analyses the readings in depth.
Best teacher I've had thus far! If you go to class, you basically don't have to do or understand the readings because she explains them really well. There were 3 take-home assignments, and they were very easy. TA's were very helpful and told you what they expect if you ask. TAKE THIS CLASS. Marguerite is hilarious, I wish I never skipped any class
Prof Deslauriers is amazing! Opened my eyes to new views on feminism in a clear way. Was very open to & helpful with clarification questions during class. TAs were great at leading conferences & helping with assignments during office hours. Don't need to do the readings if you pay attention in class & take good notes. Highly recommend this class!
MD is one of the best professors I've ever had. She is extremely knowledgable about the subject and manages to synthesize large amounts of complex philosophical theories into digestible lectures that are easy to understand. Would recommend this class to anyone, and if you have a chance to take a course with MD, do it!
Prof. Deslauriers was my favourite prof I've had at McGill so far! She managed to effectively synthesize abstract philosophical concepts into captivating and easy-to-understand lectures. You could tell she was incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about the material that she was teaching. Her TAs were also amazing!
fascinating lectures, a lot of readings but she really tries to make the work flexible. what a queen
I highly recommend this class, I wish every person in the world, men and women, had this class. It was so interesting, I loved it.
I loved the material and the professor but the instructions are not very clear and the expectations are quite high (especially if you don't already have a good understanding of philosophy and philosophy papers).
Her lectures were so interesting and made perfect sense, but the assignments were complicated, graded harshly, and worth a lot as there were only 3. I would recommend this class because it's really interesting but don't expect a good grade.
Prof Deslauriers is an incredible professor. Lectures were clearly structured and she made all content easily understandable and genuinely just enjoyable to learn. However, for a 200-level class, the assignments were graded very harshly and getting a grade above a standard B seemed impossible.
Professor Deslauriers' lectures were incredibly eye-opening and really interesting, but sometimes hard to follow. The assignments were just torture, seemingly simple at first but she (and the TAs) want you to be a genius. Really tough grading and no rubric to understand. However, Prof. Deslauriers is quite easy to reach out to for help.
Prof. Deslauriers is clearly brilliant, but this class is hard. The assignments, while short, are deceptive in how easy they are. My TA graded very harshly, and the rubric was pretty vague as well. But both the TAs and prof are really easy to reach outside of class. The overall class was interesting and engaging and challenges you to think.
Great prof, very engaging and incredibly interesting material. Honestly learned a lot in this class, but the grading is incredibly harsh. This class will drop your GPA - worst grade I've received at McGill in 4 years. If you're not too fussed about grades, then take this!
I genuinely think everybody should take this class, the content is so eye-opening, and the prof is extremely knowledgeable and well articulated on the topic. The grading is pretty hard, but taking this class is still very worth it because of its content.
Marguerite Deslauriers is the best prof I had at McGill! She's brilliant, and unbelievably good at her job. Her lectures are engaging, her course plan & expectations are clear, she's extremely knowledgeable about her subject, and she doesn't let people waste class time with irrelevant comments, which is rare in a philosophy prof.
The lectures were amazing, but the Task were really not helpful and the grading was tough.
Favourite class - would absolutely recommend. Prof Deslauriers' lectures are really engaging and clear. The readings are all interesting, even though they can be time-consuming if you're not used to reading philosophical papers - worth it though, I genuinely learnt so much from this course.
- Most interesting course I've taken this semester, learned so much! - Prof is amazing, engaging, passionate about the material. - HOWEVER, the TA's are ridiculously harsh graders. - Definitely appeal your grades if you take this class (appealed grades twice for each assignment and BOTH times grades went up by over 10%)
Incredible and life-changing lectures. Truly wish everyone would take this course. I would recommend taking it as a pass/fail, however, as marking was very tough.
intriguing lectures. lots of hard, complicated readings. take time to read assigned reading before class, and reread after lecture about said reading to actually understand. Assignments are hard but not long, be direct and use TA help for good feedback. Prof less available. Final was in person and a bit unfair but were permitted cheat sheet
Such a brilliant class. Everyone should take it, definitely changed my perspective on a lot of things. However, be prepared to work hard. Assignments were marked incredibly harshly by TAs and final was difficult. Readings were very interesting but often dense. Would recommend taking pass/fail if possible.
Professor Deslauriers is fascinating and incredibly knowledgeable & the class is super interesting. But I sold my soul for that A-. The grading is very fair, but the assignments and the final are so difficult. If you care a lot about grades I don't recommend, but if you're not worried about that, then definitely take it.
Funny, inspiring and caring professor. PHIL 242 should be a mandatory class at McGill, it is honestly life-changing! It is a tough class though, with a good amount of reading and harsh grading. Not an easy philosophy class at all. TAs were very kind and accessible but conferences often made the material more confusing. TAs grade SO harshly!
Forever queen
Prof. Deslauriers is a phenomenal lecturer. Be sure to really get her lecture points down bc they will make navigating the (tough) readings easier. The course is life changing. If you want to *rigorously* analyze your feminist and philosophical convictions, then this course is for you. Put in the work, and you'll be rewarded. Molly rocks
Prof. Deslauriers is an incredible lecturer, and this course is phenomenal. The biggest thing to note is that there are a lot of readings for this course and they can be difficult to understand at times, especially if you don't attend/pay attention in lecture. However, I could not recommend this class more! 100% a must-take at McGill!
The lectures are really bad, I don't understand how she has good reviews. It's so basic, she doesn't provide any nuance for the readings, and says a lot of wrong and offensive things. Also didn't provide any critiques for any assigned readings, even ones that had racism in them. Just so horrible, & unnecessarily hard grader.
Professor Deslauriers is exceptional. Her lectures are well organized with outlines, and she always stops to make sure the class understands and uses real-world examples to clarify. The PHIL 242 material was interesting and varied. Grading was SO HARSH however so make sure to get TA feedback.
Take this life-changing class with Prof. Deslauriers if you want to rigorously analyze your philosophical and feminist convictions. Expect tough readings, but the engaging lectures and Unstuck AI make studying more manageable. Endure the harsh grading - it's worth the effort!
She is a great professor and the content was fascinating. I strongly recommend this course and professor but definitely not a bird course - you will have to read quite a bit and the assignments are graded relatively harshly. But the interesting content makes studying fun :)
the materials are very interesting. It's a pity though that the professor can't explore them in depth. The texts are really difficult, but she doesn't spend enough time on each, which means they are only explained in a general way.
Love her. Iconic class. Amazing woman. I love her.
Tough grader, make sure to go to office hours for feedback. It's tough to know exactly what she is looking for.
MY SHAYLA. She's a legend. Your grade basically depends on the final and an assignment, and her lecture style is not for everybody, but she has a great sense of humor and is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. The readings will change your life. Go to her office hours and chat! She's very approachable.
