She was incredibly unfair in grading and overall unreasonable.
Took her for corresspondence. She was an impossible grader. Will not give an A to even the most worthy of student. Rude.
I thought she handled the material well. She is obviously very knowledgeable about the material. She is a tough grader but she will tell you that up front. If you do the work, you will do fine.
She is the worst teacher. She is not organized or prepared. She tells you directions for an assignment two days after you already started it. She is totally an unfair grader! She straight up told me she does not give A's.
I did not learn very much from this class. The topics are difficult to write on and the teacher didn't seem very helpful. She was nice so I gave her a 2 on helpfulness. Don't take her. I learned more english from my Spanish class than from her.

She is a terrible teacher. She cant teach at all. Her clarity on her assignments was very hard to understand. Even she didn't know what she wanted. Half of my class ended up dropping, becuase of low grades. She refused to give anyone an A. SHE IS TERRIBLE
She made us go to a lecture and write down a comment we thought about it. I got a D on my comment. How can our own thoughts be graded for anything other than for doing the assignment or not?

I thought the class was great! As long as you are truly into the class you will pass. I found it was interesting and the conversations each day over the material read was facinating.She is however a very very hard grader.

Interesting class, but she's an extremely tough grader. She taught it w/ Minta Colburn. I'm not sure I would have gotten the A had it not been for Minta.
Awful teacher! Worst one I had at ICC. The class was torture, and her grading was way WAY too hard.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. I dreaded each day. She has you read the material before class and then you get quized over it the next time. She expects you to be able to read her mind for the answers to those quizes. AVOID!

she had no idea what she was doing. it was more like she had the book teach us instead of her. she spoke to us as if we weren't capable of understanding "big words." she was strict about MLA and didn't even understand the concept herself.
Unbelievably difficult grader. To best sum up my INTST class, it was truly a nightmare. You never knew what to expect on her quizzes. Then, when you thought you turned in a REALLY good paper, you'd get it back a week later and it would be a 13/20. That's the standard, AVOID AT ALL COSTS! PLEASE!

Do not take a class with her. She does not help you at all and never explains herself. All she cares about is her own opinion and if you try to say something different you are wrong.
Very tough teacher, but she is nice. If you put forth a really good effort, she will like you. I was able to turn in late work b/c I was a good student most of the time. Definitely not the easiest teacher for lit, but you can learn a lot from her.
This class was VERY hard, but I learned (and retained!) a lot. It's not a blow-off class. There is a lot of reading. It's not an impossible class though. I got an A. If you make it personal and enjoy it you'll do fine. The hardest part is the essay exams. They require lots of studying.
This lady was a total ****, the worst grader, and treated you like you were a complete idiot. I would not reccomend this class to anyone unless you like being treated like you are stupid.

I love to read....but she made it seem like reading was my worst nightmare. She was okay in terms of teaching but was very critical on some things. We wrote a paper on our favorite song and what it meant to us and what we interpreted the artist of singing about. I wrote what I thought my song was about and she COMPLETELY shat all over it. It was as if her opinions mattered. I got a D on the paper and failed the class. Stupid, just stupid. Not me..her grading style. Elect teachers with caution!
I used to actually ENJOY literature, but after having this teacher.. She's totally not helpful in any way, and she teaches things that aren't relevant, and she speaks to us like we're idiots. She'll tell you that only HER interpretation of a poem, story, etc is right. And I'm sick of reading about the SAME THINGS over n over..

I took her class twice, compI and Lit. She is very tough, but I am better off for it. She will help you if you ask, but she won't baby you. If you can get an A or B out of her than you know you learned something and deserved it. Challenge from a brillant teacher than take her, Lazy, need a good grade than don't. I write better papers b/c of her.
I think that I am actually dumber after having taken this class. I got a 35 on the ACT in English, but I still found this very hard and boring and such. I learned very little about composition in that class. I would rather gnaw off my own arm than take that class again.
I enjoyed taking this class. She never took points from for missing class and she even let me retake a test that i had missed because i slept in. Some of the assignments are tough but nothing too terrible. Anybody can handle this class.
I was so excited to take a Lit class at ICC, but Vance def. took away the enjoyment of reading and writting. As another rater mentioned, only HER interpretation is correct. The only way you will get an A/B on a paper is if you merely spit back her own ideas. There is no room for creativity in this class if you want to pass.

Worst teacher I have ever had at ICC. She is mean to students and very unclear about her assignments. She smirks when she knows she is being mean. She thinks its funny. Quiz's a lot over stuff not talked about in class. 1/2 of class dropped. She taught with Barbra Burton and Burton saved my grade. Don't waste your time with her.
This woman is pure evil. She could care less about the students. She spews out a lecture by writing things all over the board and expects you to have a deep understanding of what she said. We had like three books for this class and we only used one of them most of the time-I dont even know whay I got those books if I didn't need them in the first place. I know we all write really good papers and she acts as though our lives depend on these papers. Note to self-take no classes with Ms. Vance as intructor.
A black-and-white professor: she gives the notes, you take them down. She was very clear and thorough about everything. Really can't complain.
I have had this woman for two classes and she was consistently rude. Rarely friendly, and makes you feel like an idiot if you ask questions. Good luck pulling off an A or B with her.
Absolutely the worst college experience in my life. I am a straight-A student and a good writer. I turned in professional, well thought out work and she told me that I needed to tune down my vocabulary because people wouldn't understand what I was saying. Grading scale is completely subjective. No clear expectations are set. Do NOT take her!

I got an A on both the papers in the class, A average on quizes, and a A on the midterm and final, but got a B in the class. Im not sure how that works but this lady is terrible teacher. I could have looked up stuff on wikipedia before class and knew more on the subject.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. I'm an A student, but I got a B in her class because she was SO UNCLEAR on everything! She didn't seem to know what she was talking about. She is VERY wishy washy and can't give a clear answer. Horrible teacher.

Claims things are open, but prefers her own interpretations for tests. When asked why things are marked wrong, said, "it's just 1 point." Never mind that 10+ were wrong for no clear reason. Misc. in class quizzes ask open ended ?s that are easy to miss. The class was boring, and I could have learned as much from simply reading the book.
I love literature, but Ms. Vance made me detest everything we discussed. Her grading techniques are very subjective and her teaching style is messy & unclear. I often found myself reading OTHER stories in the book because it was more interesting than the class itself. Never have I felt less confident & more worried in something I know I excel in.
This course was team-taught with Prof Richrath. Got As with Richrath's portion and Cs with Vance's portion. Likes giving pop quizes. Subjective grading on papers and tests. Avoid this instructor. I know I will!
Prof. Vance's lectures were really interesting and very informative. If you need help, just ask her. Enjoyable class overall.

Be prepared for LOTS of essay questions! Taking notes everyday!!!!! This class is miserable to take. You have two different teachers and it takes forever to have your first test! Your grade depends on 2 tests and 2 papers! Good luck! It's full of NO FUN!
For Humanities you have 2 teachers Margo Vance & Jen Richrath. Vance is pretty tuff and grades pretty harsh but they are english teachers! You get to use your notes on the MIDTERM & FINAL! Take good notes and you'll do fine! So far we've watched 2 movies, taken 1 test (midterm), and written 1 paper, and read 1 book. Take notes & you'll do good!

I went into this class with English as my minor... after this class I changed it. Her grading is impossible. Every opening sentence begins with "I think" or "I can't take credit for this because another student came up with this". Not what I look for in a college teacher.
You're opinion is going to be wrong most every time. Get used to it. quizzes are always pop quizzes. Pay attention in class as best you can cause that's where you'll get 90% of the info for tests, but forget it if you have questions. Might as well as a wall, you'll get about as much feedback. She is a nice person, but can be frustratin as a teacher
I had her in 06. She was by far one of the worst teachers I had. She wanted us to turn in all papers we wrote at midterm. So if we made a mistake in one paper, it was probably made in all. How on earth can you learn that way. She is a lazy grader. I dropped at midterm. I took Dr. Strauch. awesome guy!!
She was very unclear and unfairly subjective in her grading style. I got a C+ on a paper from her that she said would have otherwise been given a high A simply because i didn't provide a few in-text citations. On a side note we were not given instruction with MLA. Unfortunately, her unfair grading in the final ruined my shot at an A in the class.
Wow. She is a horrible teacher. We had a group assignment, and she failed to tell us that one member in our group dropped her class. Then she held us accountable for his missing part of the work. We got a C. She refused to change it although on the assignment sheet it said that each person in the group was only responsible for their part. Run.
Lets just keep this simple. If your looking for a reasonable teacher this isn't your go to person. She keeps lectures extremely dry and dont even dare think about putting in your opinion! Because if you do she will shun you down! Grades very very hard! If she even slightly doesn't like it she will give you a poor grade with bad explanation.

Super boring. Go to class because she sometimes gives quizzes. Take notes word for word. Ask if you can use the notes for your test if she doesn't mention it. She'll usually let you use two pages (front and back) of notes. She seems pretty uncertain about what she's teaching at times which can be annoying but otherwise it's self explanatory.
I don't know what's wrong with everyone else, but this teacher is really good. I didn't really have to study that hard for tests due to the two pages of notes, and the assignments were pretty straight-forward. All you have to do is come to class, listen, and follow directions. If you can't do that, then don't go to college.

AWFUL TEACHER RUN! I an English major, decided that taking Lit110 as an elective would be just as entertaining as it was rewarding. I'm sure It would have been had I not with Mrs. Vance. She talked about comic-book movies and graphic novels incessantly, and belittled people who had trouble following her ramblings and in comprehensible lecture style
This teacher was not very helpful when it came to writing papers. Seemed a little irritated when asked questions. Always blocked the screen when giving lectures. This was a writing class, everyday lectures were unnecessary and no time was given in class to work on papers.
I enjoyed her. I love Literature and she had a passion for her subject. I didn't notice anything that other people have been saying. She was very understanding when my husband was diagnosed with cancer and I had to miss a lot of class. I would take her again.
Professor Vance was the worst teacher I have ever encountered. couldn't understand what she want and did not answer questions accurately. If you have the chance RUN AWAY, FAR FAR AWAY.

Lots of notes but she's clear. Enjoyed class discussions. If you want to learn and come to class and pay attention, it's great. Not a blowoff class though. She is friendly and answers questions.
Professor Vance is a very judgemental instructor. I felt she judged me as a student which was hard for me to show my best potentional. She also graded a lot of assignments, as if she was mad at something during the grading process. Do not take her classes.

Wonderful! I took her for Eng110 and she was very clear and seemed concerned about students. She was challenging but if you do the work you will do well.

If you love English and understand MLA without any help, take this class. If you need extra help, I would consider other options. I received a 98 in this class, just because I learned to write to her style so she would enjoy it. She is a tough grader and drops your lowest paper score for you to redo it. Syllabus and class instruction is confusing.

I have always done well in my English classes but this class is stupid and hard. She doesn't give rubrics so you hardly know what to write, and you have to write in her style or it's all wrong. Worst class ever!!!!!!
Class was very interesting and Professor Vance did a good job teaching. However, she is a hard grader and gives lots of random assignments that aren't worth many points. Make sure to notes you will need them. Not many big grades only a midterm, final, and 2 papers.
This professor has an extremely ableist attendance policy. If you miss more than 4 classes she will dock you a HALF letter grade per class. For students who have health issues this is an extremely unfair and ridiculous policy. As for the class its papers, presentations, and tons of group work. I plan to major in anthropology and I was disappointed

She comes off nice in person, but she is actually very rude. Dont go against her way of thinking/have different opinions on the topics she gives. If you do, you are immediately wrong and she is right, and your grade will reflect that. She definitely shouldnt be a teacher if she thinks its okay to give Fs over different views.

If your work does not align with her views or opinions, she will dock you for it. Assignments were often unclear, and grading was at times unfair. Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to.
Does not explain why points were missed on an assignment and takes petty points away that add up causing a lower grade. Do not recommend her class at all especially online.
I absolutely loved this course! I enjoyed having Professor Vance as a professor. She was very nice and respectful towards everyone. She really was helpful when I needed help with preparing for my tests and quizzes as well as making sure my assignments were done correctly. I would recommend this class to anyone who enjoys literature!
Do not take her class! She grades very harshly. If you do not put her exact thoughts, you get grade deductions. REQUIRED partner work. Unfair for those who chose online for flexibility. No grace if your partner does not do the work! Effects your grade as well. She expects insanely detailed work for little to no points. Choose a different professor!
Choose someone else if you can. Grades hard for no reason. Grading makes no sense. Randomly releases notes and assignments. Expects professor level work for college students. This is a community college, and this is a requirement for some students, stop being petty because they don't agree with you and give fair grades!
