She's a great teacher! She has a wealth of knowledge in this subject. She has 5 tests (85%), HW assignments (10%), and attendance is 5%. The book is essential for this course she uses it throughout class as well as homework assignments. The only problem one may have is her accent, but it's not difficult to understand. She starts class on time.
Great math teacher. Very nice lady. If you don't understand a problem ask her and she will explain it thoroughly. Very approachable. Knows the subject well. She is always willing to help her students. Has the best interest for her students. I am so glad she is teaching at FIU.
Very good teacher. She will explain everything thoroughly if you don't understand, just ask her. She is always willing to help her students understand the subject. She gives reviews plenty of time ahead to help the student study, that are very similar to the exams. Great teacher at FIU.
Excellent teacher and she really has a great deal of knowledge in this subject! She will always answer any questions and she is very sweet! Sometimes difficult to understand her accent, but other than that she makes the course very easy to comprehend. She starts class on time, so be prompt. The book is used for examples and hw. HW is extra credit!
I speak spanish but I have a really hard time understanding her. Unless you do the review and go to class having read ahead, you will probably not do well.
Class is not hard at all, TONS of extra credit. She does have an accent but I cant imagine anyone struggling with understanding the darn numbers, its cake.
I am an English major and have either failed or dropped math every semester since I started at FIU. I hate math. For the first test in Balius's class, I scored an A and pretty much every test after that I did just as well or better. As long as you understand and complete the review, you will get an A. No tricks, she clearly wants you to pass.
TERRIBLE!!! do not take her, she is by far the worst, rudest professor I have ever had. She gives you attitude, to EVERYONE(not just me), when you ask her a question. I do not know why people are giving her a good review, yes she does give extra credit, but its really A LOT of it thats not worth much to your actual grade. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Very nice lady and very helpful
she goes pretty fast and does not move out of the way to write the info, and when she does she is lecturing and you cant concentrate, BUT the review she gives is GOLD and we help you 100%. do the homework for practice and repetition and learn the review, with that you'll blaze through the test and "show your work" she takes off major points!
I took this class exactly a year ago, fall 2010, and the first day of class the professor came in not only late, but unprepared. She didn't even have the roster so after 10 mins we left. Professor teaches in spanglish and her accent is so thick its hard to understand her. She went through lectures fast and was rude to students asking questions.
This professor does not like to answer questions. She does care about your performance but asking questions is like prohibited.
She is the sweetest lady in the world. if you pay attention in class and participate she will love you. Also, she curves and tries to help you. Not true that she is rude she just has an accent. She is really clear and shows what kinds of problems will be on test. I am so bad at math but I got a B+ in her class..
she's a very nice teacher, and she knows the material well. i never really understood her though because she doesn't have control over the class. everyone is usually talking and ignoring her. no one really paid attention.
SUper easy, do all her hw and you will pass for sure. Gives review of exactly what is going to be on the test. Only bad thing is she goes super fast through chapters but you will get a good grade if you attend every class and go through the review with her. Tests are exactly whats on the review. The book is confusing & doesn't help so go to class.
Heavy accent but understandable. Great professor. She helps those students that help themselves. Attend class and pay attention and you pass. I recommend her.
Great professor. AMAZING TEST REVIEWS. She does go over the chapters fast, but is not a hard subject. You should probably read the chapters before going to class to make sure you don't get lost. IMPORTANT!!! IF YOUR EXAMS AVERAGE A 92 OR HIGHER YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE THE FINAL, WHICH IS CUMULATIVE. INSTEAD SHE REPLACES THE FINAL GRADE WITH AN A.
She is not the easiest teacher but deff not the hardest. In the beginning you might feel intimidated by her accent but trust me it understandable. She goes by fast but somehow you get it. THE STUDY GUIDE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. She gives you a study guide before every test and the questions are exactly like that. Good professor.
she very helpful, nice, easy . i would defiantly take her again. she explains things perfectly. and has no problem explaining it again if you don't get it. very sweet lady
Book not mandatory. teaches from the book but gives you reviews before the test that you can study from. Hard to understand with her accent but just pay close attention. decent teacher, gets frustrated when you ask questions though.
I passed this class with an A. If you go by your review, you will pass with a high grade. Just pay attention and focus on the review! Take Her!
Easiest stats class ever. You dont need the book for class. All you have to do is go to class and go to the reviews and you will get an easy A, which is exactly what i did. Has an accent but you get used to it really fast. Btw her reviews are the test, just with different numbers. She has no problem answering questions and is the best by far
Maria is an excellent teacher! I have never really liked math much, but she has successfully helped me build a foundation. Math is no longer such a drag. I've been acing my tests =). Don't be intimidated by her, she may come off a bit strong, but she is just pushy because she really wants you to learn. TAKE HER! She knows her stuff!
She is a great teacher and person. She is always open for questions and will definitely do what's in her power to make you pass. Great experience as a class; she is funny and doesn't make the class boring at all. Take her!
Shes a pretty decent teacher. She prepares you as best as she can for her test with the reviews she gives you. Her review packets and tests are the same thing.
sweet heart, i failed first time, and passed this time, Ii love her, willing to help studnts, gives detailed study guides no tricks. <3
This class is super easy if you just pay attention. She reviews for the four tests and the tests are exactly the review. All the tests have extra credit. Failed one test and still finished with an A.
she is THE BEST. If you want to get an A in finite, this is definately the teacher to take.
Professor Balius knows how to teach math. She can be hard to contact/get help from, but she is understanding and will let you make up tests. The tests are straight from the study guides so as long as you study the night before, you'll be perfectly fine. Not an easy A, but it's not impossible.
Prof Balius is a good professor however she may be difficult to understand because she has a thick accent. If you can get over her accent, take her. She not only does review days before the exam, she gives out study guides which are practically the test. I'm not sure how people could fail with her when she does everything in her power to pass you.
Yes she has a thick accent, but nothing crazy. After a few classes you'll get over it. The best thing about this professor is that she will do everything in her power for you to learn the material and pass her course. She is a great understanding professor who cares about her students. Take Her.
Are you with me? this teacher is the bomb, I payed close attention in class and study the morning of the test(I'm not exaggerating morning of the test) and got an easy A. Are you with me?!? she is awesome, her English is hard to understand and I dislike she write everything on the board and then explains but she is good. Are you with me? TAKE HER
Balius is a great prof. - she makes math seem very easy. Ive taken this class before and failed because I had a hard time remembering some concepts; Ive had no such problems with her as my professor. So far I've gotten over 100 on our last two tests, just by studying straight from the study guide. Just try to get over her accent & u should be fine.
Her class wasn't too bad. You don't need the textbook unless you want a physical book. Homework is all online. 3 exams plus finals. Weekly quizzes in the beginning. Her handwriting is hard to read.
MAKE SURE YOU DO THE HOMEWORK! She is not a tough teacher once you get past her accent. She really loves her students and tries to help them as much as possible. Would definitely take her as a prof. again. She gives random pop quizzes but not many and they are only worth like 5%. Must attend to pass. Mylabsplus comes with a text book!
Professor Balius was one of the best math teachers I've ever had in FIU and that says a lot because there aren't many good ones. She gives a review for each exam and if you look over it a couple times and learn the formulas, it is quite simple. It is not a good idea to miss class, for missing class will leave you lost. Easy way to do well in STATS
This proffesor is amazing! Her accent is a bit tough to get through, and I'm from the same country as her, but she really makes sure you do well on the tests. Her reviews are almost identical to the tests, but the book is useless since she gives all the info you'll need in class.
Book isn't necessary, you just need the access code. Pop quiz every week, usually a Friday. About 4 tests in total plus the final. If you are failing the class, she will let you retake one of the tests you did on. Accent and handwriting are very hard to understand. One of the better finite teachers, but you need to actually study and try to pass.
This was my second time taking finite and the first time I received a D, this time I received an A. Professor Balius' class is very easy to pass if you do the homework and the test reviews she gives which are very helpful. She had no problem giving help when needed if she sees your interest. I recommend her 100% !
This class is super easy, I had her my first semester at FIU for finite and now for stats, she tries her best for everyone to pass and makes everything as clear as possible. She has a light accent but repeats herself so much that if you don't get it your probably not trying, everything you need is written on the board and she does lots of examples
Run Away!! She doesn't know how to speak English!! She's terrible in teaching!! It's very hard to reach her out plus she has a bad attitude all the time! DO NOT TAKE HER!
Do Not Take her! Terrible in English ! she does not know how to teach
Prof. Balius is not very fluent in English, like most of the math teachers, but you will get the point. She doesnt really know how to teach the class in general but she does teach for the test, meaning she gives hella examples with variations in each one. Since most of the work is done on MyLabsPlus, her help isnt really necessary due to the book.
Professor Balius has a tough personality, she might be intimidating to approach but overall will help you out. Class consists of 5 exams, she will replace your lowest test grade with the final. If you have an 89 or higher after the 5 exams you will not have to take the final. All exams have a study guide which you should rigorously study.
Professor Balius is one of the best math teachers at FIU. This is the second class I have taken with her, she will do everything she can to help you pass her tests. Willing to help after class and in her office hours. The class is not easy, but Balius is an amazing teacher. I am horrible at math and I was able to pass. I strongly recommend her.
THIS WOMEN WAS HELL!! DO NOT TAKE HER!! WORST OF FIU if you did not understand her she would get mad... she spoke spanish and after class i tried to ask her something in spanish to see if i understood better and she ignored me! as well I asked for a test back and all she said was if i bring it tomorrow good if not well to bad!! ABSOLUTE WORST !!
She is the best!!! This is the second class I have taken with her, she will do everything she can to help you pass her tests. This class is supper hard, so you need to have some knowlegde in Math . You have to study and read the book. Prof Balius is amazing she gives review and help you to pass this class.
No Help. At. All. Middle of the test, I would raise my hand to ask a question, she would do the same every time. Have you walk up, mid way through finishing my question her answer came out, "That is not my problem, that is your problem." When all I needed was to clarify what she was asking for in her question specifically.
Can not understand her at all, it was really difficult for me to make it through the class.
Prof Balius was an amazing math instructor. Yes, she does have a very thick accent but nothing you can't get used to. I took 2 different math classes with her and passed both times (kind of a big deal for me!). She's always willing to help and will always answer your questions. She made the material easier to understand and her reviews rock!
Prof. Balius has a strong accent, which at first makes it hard to understand her!!! Once you're used to it, it's really easy. There's 5 tests, during class she explains clearly and give many examples. The week before the exam, she tells you the questions you'll find in the test just that with different numbers.
She has a very thick accent and goes fasts. She's a pretty nice professor. She reviews the test before the date. She gives pop quizzes but you can work with other students. The class is kinda hard but she made it clear for me. Don't be afraid to ask her questions. You only need the online access code for homework. I would totally take her again!
Tests are about 7-8 questions, no calculator or equation sheet allowed which makes it very hard. WARNING: If you are not strong in math I don't recommend. She assumes you know everything already and teaches VERY FAST. Homework is ridiculous, only good thing is she gives u review packet with the questions to expect on the test. Wouldn't take again.
She's a good teacher. Like any other math class, you cannot slack off in her class. She is to the point and is very helpful, reviews are exactly like the exam. not much work, about 4-5 tests all semester. she does have an accent but she is clear and tries to enunciate. overall great teacher, she truly cares about students.
She's a good teacher. Like any other math class, you cannot slack off in her class. She is to the point and is very helpful, reviews are exactly like the exam. not much work, about 4-5 tests all semester. she does have an accent but she is clear and tries to enunciate. she is a little serious, but she truly cares about students.
Thick accent, very condescending when asked questions, makes you feel stupid and singles you out. Will yell at you if you don't understand so by mid semester people stop asking questions. If you're bad at math and slow to learn, do not take her, she speeds through the lessons. I suck at math and she was never willing to help me. Terrible teacher.
She has a strong accent, not the clearest hand writing but overall I thought she was a great teacher. If you have any questions she answers them and she gives you two options for the class to decide when to take the test. If the times don't work for you she lets you take it when convenient. She makes sure everyone understands I'd take her again.
Took this class to finish trig and precal in one semester. I was worried since math is not my strong suit, but she made the material understandable and easy to learn. Go to her review sessions, she gives all the questions for the exam with different numbers. Study these questions well, and pass easily.
It is a little difficult to understand her but she really wants to make sure that all of her students pass with an understanding of the topics. Gives two projects which are very simply, very clear review for each test, listing each question that will be on it and gives answer to review. Takes attendance almost every class.
HW IS OPTIONAL. SHE WILL TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT WILL BE ON THE TEST. HW IS OPTIONAL BUT DO IT ITLL HELP YOUR GRADE. SHE TEACHES FAST SO IF YOURE NOT GOOD AT MATH IT MIGH BE HARD.
Took this course in 6 weeks. She gives reviews the class before every test, and the tests are exactly like the reviews with different numbers. She gave us a test the first week of class!! She has an accent, but you'll get used to it. She takes attendance by giving math problems to solve. Would take again.
Professor Bails is amazing! I took her class in the summer. She gives reviews that are exactly like the questions in the exam except in the exam the problems have different numbers. I would defenitely recommend her!
She's not a bad teacher, at all... BUT her accent is EXTREMELY heavy.. She cares for her students and wants them to pass... Like I said, accent is heavy so when she's trying to teach, it will be kind of hard to understand what she's saying..
her accent makes it difficult to understand her. Before every test she will give a study guide which is good. Easy going.... PRACTICE THE PROBLEMS YOU DONT UNDERSTAND.
Although people might comment she is rude is just an accent matter. She is caring and lovely and makes sure you pass. Gives extra credit, awesome reviews before every exam. She has to del with the math department which makes everything more difficult but have in mind that this will be the case for every professor in this subject.
This professor is a mixed bag. She isn't good at teaching things clearly, makes lots of errors, and dislikes answering questions. However, her tests are 100% what she covered in class and what she goes over in review days. My opinion? It's an easy A if you are good in math, read the book, and go to class, but her teaching is truly mediocre at best.
Honestly most caring professor i have ever had. Does everything in her power to make sure you pass. Fantastic review/study guide for each exam. If you fail this class its because you want to fail. I would highly recommend her
This class was the best math class I have ever taken. She is the sweetest professor out there in math. She has an accent, and goes fast, but if you honestly just take 10 minutes after every class to review notes, the material will click. She practically gives you the test Qs in her work packets and tells you which questions are on the exams. Easy!
She gives reviews that are almost exactly like the test, so it's easy to pass. Her accent is thick but the MyMathLab helps in explaining if you don't get it in class. Super nice and funny at times!
She is the best professor, I love her so much!!! I wish she was my grandmother!!
She does have a strong accent and goes over material extremely fast but overrall shes very understanding and will let you take exams another day if you go out of town. her exams are almost the same as the reviews. honestly id study the review for like 2-3 hours the day before the exam and get an 90 percent and up. but study!!!
She is the best at teaching Math. Goes extremely fast over the lecture but you can grasp the whole concept, just need to practice. Awesome reviews before tests and more than forgiving grader. Do the online HW, go to her reviews and you'll be set
Worst teacher I have ever had in my 14 years of education. Her accent is so thick. She is constantly getting problems wrong, and us (the students) have to constantly be correcting her. However; the class is easy enough for you to learn on your own. Just complete and learn from the mathlabs. The test reviews she gives out are the same as the test.
She goes very fast and its really hard to understand her but her reviews are identical to her exams, theres no surprises with her. I would definitely recommend taking her. go to class (has easy graded quizzes), do the homework, and go over the exam review a ton of times before the exam and it'll be an easy A. Best precal&trig professor.
I took her for both MAC 1140 and MAC 1114 and honestly her exams are easy and exactly like the review she always gives out! It is hard to fail her class, unless you dont bother glancing at the review, and she is very understanding and WILL change grades under the right circumstances. Very approachable, quick when teaching but easy to pass with.
Professor Balius is very accessible outside class. Although English is not her first language, her lectures in my opinion are not bad, taking into account that we only met once a week. She tells you what you should focus on in order to get a good grade on the exams. The class is hybrid, which means that all the assignments are online.
At first didn't understand her bc of accent. Got used to it after two weeks. Kinda straightforward and makes classes as short as possible. She tells you which concepts will be on exams. She is funny. She grades midterms up to 110 points out of 100. So if you get 10 points incorrect you still get 100% which is nice.
Professor Baluis is amazing! She really wants you to pass. She gives you multiple opportunities to finish assignments and gives you points for trying. Yes her accent is kind of heavy and she does move fast but take pictures and youll be fine. Her reviews really help! I wish she taught business cal would definitely recommend!
Class is a little difficult, but she's always willing to help, she gives long reviews, but if you study them you should be fine!
Professor Balius is extremely helpful for such a tough subject. She gives you study guides before every exam and gives you questions to study that are extremely similar to the ones one the test. She gives a lot of partial credit and cares about students passing. The only downside to this teacher is her heavy accent and she teaches pretty quickly.
Show up to class, she'll teach you what you need for the test. Great proff, ask questions if you have them.
Super easy class even if you're not the best at math. Quizzes and homework are all online and you can take the quizzes at home. The tests are easy because she gives a review of exactly whats going to be on it.
Amazing professor. I highly recommend her! She is very caring and will help you if you don't understand something. She also give great feedback. She teaches from a power point and gives out practice packets (she cares about your success), which if you do, you will pass with an amazing score! A+ Professor!
She is very good, has an accent but youll get use to it and shes funny, she does go fast but because she condenses lectures so that shes makes a study guide and goes over what type of problems will be on the test which was great! Get ready to hear are you with me!? Shes awesome.
This woman is AMAZING. I no understand a word she said all semester & still pulled off the A. Study guides are great&useful. Tests are simple. MyLabs was the only annoying thing. She cares about your grade SOO MUCH she'll do whatever it takes for you to pass. Filled out a survey and she dropped lowest quiz grade. Gotta cherish this type of teacher!
I lOVE professor Balius!! I am not a math person at all and I really enjoyed her class. Whatever she gives you in the packet, is what's on the exams. She even does the packet in class. She is super approachable and understanding so don't be afraid to tell her anything! Just do the online hw and quizzes and practice the packet problems!
I don't consider myself a math person, but this class was extremely easy thanks for Professor Bailus. She literally goes over what will be on the exam and provides a lot of examples. She's funny and makes the class enjoyable. I'm taking her for business calc this summer. Definitely recommend!
My only issue with her is she has no office hours and wont answer emails, but this is the first math class that i have gotten an A in. Her exam reviews are exactly the same as the test. I sat in the back of the class and video taped her and got the A. The final is worth a lot, so take it seriously. If you try and go to class, she helps you out.
I love people, but I simply can't comply with the reviews. I didn't understand anything she said all semester and I don't know if anyone passed her class. She goes way too fast and she doesn't explain very well! I didn't understand anything that was explained, please be prepared to take notes and have time to study because you will need all the hlp
One of the kindest professors I've ever had. She has an accent but you will get used to it after a week. Her reviews are very similar to her test so i basically got As on all her 4 tests. She's willing to help every single student if you go to her office hours, will extend the online homework if you ask her . Very knowledgeable. TAKE HER EASY A!!
Easy if good at math. Taught myself the material. You will have to work for your grade(if you dont like math)! She doesnt answer emails, but shes always accessible after class. Her grades are all over the place, keep track of your grades. Willing to give extra points to help you pass. Has an accent, but so does everyone in Miami - not a big deal
Class is pretty easy, and that's coming from someone who is terrible at math. However, this professor is horrible. She has an accent which isn't a big deal, but I was unable to understand ANYTHING she was saying because she would go too fast and would not really explain what she was doing. Unless you can teach yourself, don't get this professor.
You do have to teach yourself the class pretty much, as it's in a kind of 'group learning environment' type deal. It's not really the professor's fault, she is actually very nice and wants to see you pass, and grades the tests quite leniently. It's just the structure of the class itself that does pose some difficulty, so always go to class.
Don't goof off in class, do ALL assignments & you should pass. Lectures fast but slows down if you ask. ALWAYS accessible after class, but doesn't answer emails quickly. Go to her office hours she will help teach you EVERYTHING. Coming from a person who has never had an A in math, I put in the work & got the A. Put in the work, she will help you!
very good teacher. I am not good at math but this professor made it work for me.
LISTEN... IF YOU NEED TO TAKE THIS CLASS AND SUCK AT MATH TAKE HER!!! Lectures are hard to fellow with her accent. HW are doable and quizzes every Thursday (easy). Four exams (can redo for points) and one final. She is extremely reasonable and has been the best professor I've had.
Amazing teacher. Gives many opportunities to raise your grade and makes it very easy to pass the class at a bare minimum. If you struggle with calculus I will 1000% recommend her. I am extremely happy with her class and doubt theres any teacher better than her at FIU.
Very nice and helpful professor. She always take care of the students and always help everyone
This professor is amazing! Even though she does have an accent, the lectures are important. She lets you know everything that you need to know for the exam. There shouldnt be a reason for you not to pass. She has 4 Exams and for the lab hw accepts 70% of it done. The final can replace any lower grade test if needed, if not it stands as one grade.
She is such a sweet professor! The class itself is hard, it's a lot of practice but she gives practice tests that are the exact same as the tests. She gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit. You should know how to teach yourself though because her lectures are kind of all over the place but you can easily get a good grade.
She is an absolute angel Shes very flexible and will even push back deadlines for you if you need it. Take her class if you struggle with math
Best professor ever! Take her shes a super caring person and wants all her students to pass.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. Her response time is non existent and she is unlikely to push back deadlines for you.
dont do it. she does not teach anything. all she does is give you the answers & the class is over. i have only seen her twice and the semester is almost over. even though she did not show up for most of it, we still had to take the tests that are worth a lot on topics that had not been taught. also she NEVER replies to emails or canvas messages.
This current semester shes had medical issues so this may not be for following semesters. DO NOT TAKE. We havent met her besides a few times this semester. She barely responds to emails or comments on assignments even if theyre instantly after her messages. She doesnt teach. Entire class is struggling. Unorganized. Tests are 95% of grade.
This is the most unprofessional professor I've encountered at FIU. Throughout the semester she came to class 4 times due to personal reasons but did not bother to inform any of her students. She never responds to emails, during class she just works through the problems and doesn't teach, and she makes you feel stupid for asking questions.
while she couldve been more active in class this semester, she did speak to our class and let us know she was going through a tough medical procedure that crashes with her classes. that being said i dont agree with previous ratings, she is a good professor, just had her health as a priority which is what any of us would do. shes caring and does try
Is an okay professor, she is nice and caring. You dont have to show up to pass exams, you can learn the material on your own. There is a lot of homework weakly.
I'm not really a math guy myself, so this class required me to study a lot. There are 5 tests, including the final. Combined, those tests are like 60% of your grade, so you'll need to study. There's lots of assignments each week. She has a strong accent, so I could hardly understand her most of the time. You basically learn on your own.
Hybrid course so I had to taught myself the material, we had about 4 test and one final. Easy class and easy math, the test had a review and it was very helpful, I would definitely recommend.
Don't get me wrong, she cares about the students. HOWEVER She does not know what she is doing, and it is clear she does not understand the material she is teaching/ she does not know how to explain. You need to teach evrything yourself, which fine, bc the material is not hard( but you are paying her to teach + leactures feel like a waste of time)
She will not reply emails, class are cut short. She does not know how to explain yet attendance is mandatory so it is a waste of time. Very unprofessional and desorganized. READ the syllabus( she is not aware of most of the stuff thats going on) so this will help you.
She reads the answers off of an iPad and does not provide a clear explanation of how she got to the answer, yet the exams are worth 65% of your grade. Be prepared to self-teach through Pearson, that's the only way you'll pass. However, she's the type of professor that wants all her students to succeed. Beware of incorrect grading... she does this!
Basically a self taught class. She reviews the homework but does not explain or teach anything. She is hard to understand too and the homework is graded so hard as compared to other classes.
