there is a lot of work involved because you have to do a critical analysis almost every week, but as long as you come to every class meeting, you will do well in the class. she is extremely helpful and very empathetic. she will postpone essays and projects based on the progress of the class. and her enthusiasm makes the class go by super fast. A+

I love Prof. Bates. I had a bad semester (and had to drop due to reasons beyond my control) but she was so understanding. Dropping her class was probably the saddest thing because she's such a great professor and a an overall wonderful human being. There IS quite a bit of work but if you schedule your time wisely yourself, you'll be more than fine!

The work isn't really that hard, it's just that there's a lot of work. No really A LOT!!!. So if your taking other hard classes in the semester, she's only recommended if you can put your full effort into school alone and not work or partying all that much.

another great semester with Prof. Bates!! I took her for 205 and really learned quite a bit about literature. A lot of group work in her classes and not too much lecture from her, but it helps to make your own interpretations before she goes over the material. Take her class especially if majoring in Eng lish! =]

Bates is a great person and teacher. i love this teacher. she gives lots of work, but it helped make me write and think better. very fair grader-- gives a list of what of skills that she wants your paper to show and she has already talked about these skills. if you show these skills, you will get the points. very cheerful and sunny.

Very nice, helpful, and understanding. Assigns quite a bit of work and lots of reading. Not an easy grader, but not so hard to the point it's difficult to pass. She's a great teacher to talk to. Just about the only real difficult teacher that I really liked. Planning to take her again

Very thorough professor and you can't get by just by reading cliff notes. Lectures with powerpoint and is energetic/knowlegeble/funny. I learned a lot. You have to attend class. A great teacher.

If you do not like Dr. Bates, I don't know wtf's your problem. Bates is a lot of fun, ridiculously nice, and if you stick with her, she'll help you in more ways than you'd expect. She's a tough grader but she'll give you an A if you work for it. Thanks to her, I'm transferring to Berkeley. Bates will always be my favorite.

Took this class in spring 2010. Prof. Bates is nice, understanding, and very energetic.. I sometimes felt like she talked to the class like we were a bunch of 3rd graders, but I guess thats just how she is. She really takes the time to explain step by step what she expects from your papers. All of the hmwk prepares you for the final.

I've taken Bates for two classes so far and will take more! Love this teacher. She has helped me improve my writing and she is awesome-- you learn lots while having fun.

I just took eng 101 with dr. bates and damn was it fun. She's young which makes class that much more fun. We talk about genitals and what not in class and relate them to our society. Fun stuff. I'm taking her for 102 next semester :) take her you will not regret it. No other english prof is like her.

20 page research paper is the main assignment for semester along with critical writings, presentation,&skit. Maria pushed me to become a better writer and for that she is a superb professor. She kept encouraging me to go outside my comfort zone/style which I will be eternally grateful.

GREAT professor! One of the best I've ever had, for sure. I hate English but really enjoyed her class. She's very clear about what she wants. She has a great sense of humor. She gets the class really involved with what's going on. I wouldn't call it an easy A, but she's definitely fair, reasonable, and very helpful.

best teacher ever! She teaches clearly and we went over many ways to read literature, so I grew as a thinker/learned lots. She's not that easy, but she will help you and she is very clear in her teaching, but her tests will cause you to get writer's cramp. She's an AWESOME professor though!

I didn't feel like she graded my work enough. As someone who really likes to read I really wanted to have a teacher that helped me to become a better writer. I don't feel like she helped me much with that. She focused too much on helping kids who barely even speak english, going easy on them while staying hard on me and not helping me.

She is very nice and all but very strict. I found her kind of annoying in the beginning of the class but I got used to her teaching style. She usually let us go early. Not a hard class but since she follows her rubrics it kinda seems like she doesn't care what's in the essay. Good Professor.

LOTs of writing and gramar + people who made mistakes always had to stay after class 4 more review. i didn't like staying late! So Bates is strict but she will go step by step with exs n' is good at explaining. Not to nice due to strictness but Still,real pretty and with liveliness.

Professor Bates is simple the best teacher I have had for English. The class was fairly simple and when problems came up in the semester that kept me from a couple assignments finishing an assignment, she was patient and worked with me to ensure that I could turn it in for a fair late grade. Prof. Bates is extremely helpful. I took her for both 101 and 102 and both classes were a breeze. There is assigned reading but what else do you expect from an english class? There are essays due in the class but she takes it step by step making the essay seem rather easy, just don't miss class or you'll miss a lot of information!

I have had Professor Bates for a few different English classes and she is the best teacher at Pierce College. She really teaches you how to write a paper correctly. This is a skill you will use for many other classes. She also gives a very clear grading rubric, so if you do something wrong it is your fault. She also makes the class very fun.

If you wnat to learn you should follow her class, and do her homeworks. She really helped me to improve my skills because I'm second language, and it wasn't easy for me to get A.

I have her class once a week that last for four hours, she is very helpful and understanding for tired students. An awesome prof. She talks to everyone and help as much as possible. Bates is a bright and energetic teacher who tries her best to make everything easy to understand, she gives extra time if you ever ask for it and provides plenty of feed back and chances to redo assignments if she thinks you can do better. She was heavy on short essay assignments but she grades very generously and gives you A for effort.

If you struggle with writing, I really suggest taking Prof. Bates's class! She teaches you step by step on how you can improve your writing and how to analyze literature in a very simple way. She explains everything until you understand what she's saying and she's super caring. Sometimes her workload can be due back to back but it isn't hard to do.

She's a really nice and accommodating teacher. I had her for Honors and the only thing that I had to be very keen about was grammar. She gives weekly homework that I honestly think isn't too heavy or bad to handle within a day. If you can't attend a day of class she posts the materials online. She goes through things with you carefully too.

Sweetest professor ever. She really wants to make sure the students succeed. Make sure to buy the books and the handouts beforehand so you actually have all the material. TURN IN EVERYTHING ON TIME, SHOW THAT YOU CARE, ASK QUESTIONS and you will get an A.

She gives a lot of papers but they're relatively very easy. She breaks down things before tests, quizzes and presentations so they're easy as well. She also requires one campus activity (she freed up one of our classes to do this). She's very nice and accommodating. She gives one late pass for a paper. Exams are all written so memorize definitions.

Dr. Bates gives great and specific feedback on the writings you turn in. Shes very energetic during lectures and also uses funny videos to explain certain topics. She puts the class into groups and assigns group work. There are two essays and two presentations along with ten writing assignments. In-class quiz (5) topics are told beforehand.

One of the best professors I've had. Responds quickly, Gives amazing feedback on all your assignments. One final, both an in-class and a canvas quiz. Excluding the final quiz, there were only 2 quizzes. small assignments based on readings and you can use them for your research essay at the end of the semester. Overall, kind and extremely helpful!

Her class is quite easy. There are a lot of assignments, but they really arent that bad. Theres a midterm thats easy and so is the final. She has a 7 day grace, which gives you 7 day pass due date to turn in assignments without deductions. She grades pretty easy. Im not the best at English but I ended the class with an A.

After being out of school for so many years and finally going back to finish my degree in my 40s, I have to say she is one of the most caring, straight forward professors ever. This class has many essays to complete, plenty discussions too. If you do all the assignments when theyre do, you will pass this class. She is extremely understanding!

I had Prof. Bates for the asynchronous honors section, and she was a wonderful professor! She gave great feedback on what we can improve on, and I liked the variety of assignments. For an online class, she made it pretty interesting and she offered lots of opportunities for peer collaboration. I highly recommend her if you have a busy schedule!

If you want a good grade you have to work for it, try not to slack off either or else you'll have a ton of work to catch up on towards the end of the class. Super nice and always really accommodating! Such a wonderful professor!!!

Prof Bates is one of the best professors. She's helpful, clear, and wants you to do well. Her courses are organized well and easy to follow. She helps and answers quickly, and she made the online process a good experience (unlike other courses I have taken). Brilliant, kind, lovely, and informative, too! Not boring!

Best English professor I took. Very light in terms of work, grades essays very fairly, and offers tons of extra credits. Always replies to emails. Allows late work by 7 days, if not more. Very friendly and caring, what more could you ask from a Professor?

Professor Bates is a great teacher. She has amazing energy and gives great feedback. But if you don't like doing group work, I suggest you take a different class. You don't do a lot of group work but it is a part of the class.

Professor Bates is one of the most understanding professors. As long as you do your best to stay on track you will have no issue in falling behind. Her assignments are all reasonably doable and she gives you more than enough time to get them done. She takes the time out of her day to give detailed feedback on every assignment. Awesome, awesome, professor for ANY english course. She has hands down organized the best CANVAS course system I have taken in college, period. Her instruction is very clear & you will never be confused on what she wants. You will always get expansive feedback. Honestly very great professor. I loved her assignments it was fun. Her essays were based on your creativity, and your perspective. Most was based on her slides. Also amazing advice she gave me. Furthermore she is super lenient if you have a reasoning for late work. I was sick and she accepted my work till the last day. AWESOME professor.

Taking her class online was easy to follow and there wasn't too much work. I will say that you can probably get by without being the textbook (we only needed it for two articles). She is a tough grader but gives good feedback and if she sees effort, you will usually get an A. My only complaint was there was no feedback on our final assignments.

Professor Bates was a great professor to have, especially for my first semester. She made sure to outline everything for all of the assignments and her class was quite enjoyable. She was easy to reach through email and the feedback that she gave me on my assignments and essays was helpful.

Professor Bates is a fantastic teacher. Assignments each week, but she's not a harsh grader. She gives feedback on every assignment. Loved her class. I actually enjoyed the material she taught. She tries to connect English with things students would enjoy. 10/10 would recommend.

It's really just two essays and the midterm and final that determines your grade. Quizzes don't really affect your grade that much and she gives you feedback on every assignment. Great Professor. Take this class for an easy A.
