She's crazy, disorganized, and I finished the class not knowing what it was I had learned about.
A nice enough woman, but *incredibly* spacey and disorganized, which can be frustrating. Her exams and lecture notes are full of proofreading errors. The class is easy--probably the only upper-division class I've ever seen that has Scan-Tron exams.
She's crazy, her lectures just ramble and she doesn't lecture on material that she tests over...Down with the spandex pants too
The worst teacher at WWU.
She's very spacey. Her lecture style is hard to follow...she loves to make you write LOTS of notes...and she doesn't know when to quit...kinda nice that she lets you leave early, but the assignments are kinda just busy work.
Wow...no more spandex please. The class was easy, yet she made it confusing thanks to her scatter-brained notes.
We had about 10 pages of notes a day. I was so busy taking notes I couldn't listen to the lectures. Half the time I had no clue what she was talking about and half of the questions on her tests were not on the study guide. Avoid this class at all costs!
A little zany but a nice woman. The usage of overhead was a bit much though
Little Crazy, but not that bad.
Cannot present ideas and concepts with any kind of cohesiveness. Extremely scattered and confusing. I am not convinced that she understands the material she is teaching.
makes you take insane amounts of notes--not telling you that almost nothing in the notes is on the test. don't waste your time with them. also, when asked a question, she ALWAYS answers "see [insert book title here]." has insane evil days. w
I hated this woman, she had an insane amount of notes every class period. Everyone says Anthro. is an easy A, but I disagree if you have this woman.
will someone write back and let me know if i should GO to class or can i just read the book and still get an A? thanks!! i will be taking spring 2004. thanks!
Avoid Chavez like the plague...
Class is an easy A, you never have to go to lecture, in fact I found it was easier to understand the book then Chavez herself. She is very unorganized & loopy, & you will probably learn nothing from her.
Lecture is not needed, everything can be learned from the book. At first, I found the class interesting, but after a while it just got repetetive, so I stopped going. I still did well though.
You do need to go to class, but don't bother studying your notes if you have a good memory. Only a few questions are from the class. Maria is pretty cool, but she needs to stop teaching out of that boring biased book.
terrible teacher... tests on material not covered in class... really has no idea what she's talking about
Stay far away if you love your sanity!
My roomate warned me about her but I didn't think she was that bad at all! She is undoubtably alittle on the crazy side but I didn't find that to interfere with the class or the material or my grade whatsoever. Tests were a breeze. Lectures are abit crazy
I never went to class, except on those days there was going to be a movie. She DOES ask questions about in-class movies, puts extra EC questions on the tests, gives those answers out in class. Dont go, just fill out her study guides and you'll do well
This woman is crazy. Tons of notes that arnt often on the test. HOWEVER – I am forever indebt to her for one reason. I woke up 1.5 hours late for my final, ran around campus and finally found her – she let me use as much time as I needed.

People say that Chavez is terrible, but I really enjoyed her. I thought the class was really interesting and she did a pretty good job explaining things. She was super nice and easy to talk to too!
she is definitely crazy and often i found fault with the information she was teaching, however the class was very easy and moderately interesting, especially the videos and presentations by students; if you can remember to use her information and forget your own knowledge it's a easy comp gender GUR
I wonder about her qualifications to teach. I spoke to her in her office and she said things that really made me question her intelligence.
ugh. never ever take this class. she's ridiculous. she doesn't make sense. you think it's going to be easy, but her tests are unclear and difficult.
THE worst class I have taken at this university. She is unclear, unorganized, and the class is a complete waste of time. Avoid it and her at all costs.
Terribly unclear and meandering. Just fill out the study guide and go to discussion group. The TA is clearly more intelligent.
I dont know why Maria gets such bad remarks. Sure she is a Latina princess feminine hothead anthropologist, but is one of the kindest, sweetest people in the department. Dont listen to the idiots who just took 104... Maria holds a wealth of insight and information.
What a horrible class!!! My hand hurt so bad everyday from the 10 pages of notes we had to write everyday!! SHE IS AWFUL DO NOT TAKE HER! And she needs to find clothes that fit!
RIDICULOUS CLASS, DO NOT TAKE IT..... I ACTUALLY TOOK THIS CLASS OVER SEVERAL OTHER CHOICES...BIG MISTAKE. I GO TO CLASS 10% OF THE TIME... HER AND HER TA ARE SPACE CADETS...... THEY DON'T EVEN POST THE TEST GRADES IN A USEFUL PLACE................................GEEZE
This is the single worst class I have taken at this university. Absolutely awful. She is completely unorganized and she just drones on. The notes are unorganized and irrelevant half the time. I took this for a GUR, so if you want an easy A, but it's the stupidest class I have ever had.

Teaches stright out of the book. Her notes are very unorganized, repititious and trivial. Common sense will get you far in this class. She does need cloths that fit. Often, if pressed, she doesn't know specifics or the WHY of her lectures.
I dont like Maria Chavez that much as a teacher. She is not very interested in helping the students, does not post grades when she says she will, and doesn't make class interesting.
Ridiculous class. Incredibly Easy. I recommend it for anyone who never wants to go to class and still do good. If actually care about Anthropology its not for you.
Positive: good textbooks. posts lecture notes online. Negative: wears really tight clothes. ignorant. bad grammar. boring. inconsistent on blackboard. annoying as hell! The actual class was ok, it's fairly easy to get a good grade out of. But Chavez is horrible.
Nice, but extrememly spacey, unclear, and flakey. Dates for tests and papers always changed, she never really told you what she wanted. She did not even come to the final, the TA finally showed up after 20 minutes.
She plain can't teach. Wears tight clothes that she shouldn't be wearing. The class is so repetitive. If you have been to one class you have been to them all. She reads straight off her outline w/out going into any detail. Go over the study guide, and you will do well for sure.

For god sake DON'T GO TO CLASS!!!! Go over the study guides, they are like the bible in this class, DON'T GO TO CLASS!
She is extremely boring. Her notes are horrible: unclear, and with grammar mistakes. She appears very ignorant whenever a student asks her a question in class. She posts her lecture notes on blackboard. Seriously, that's the only plus to this class. Just don't go!!!!
She is a horrible professor. Her lectures are boring and her notes are rediculous. They have no organization and don't meake sense most of the time because of poor grammar. I was looking forward to Anthro but I regret taking this class.
Unbearable. her lectures are ranting with no actual content to write down. her tests are almost like tricks, with options of none, all, a or b, b or c. give me a break, mutliple choice is to test your knowledge not your psychic powers. the worst part is her inability to stay focused.
This class is ridiculous...she is spacey and the notes are atrocious…if you care about Anthro this class is a waste of your time
laziest teacher ever!boring and unorganized. but, if you do the study guides youre golden!
This was without a doubt the worst class I have ever taken. Maria was super boring and the material was unorganized. An average day consisted of Maria putting up overyly detailed notes and then stomping around the stage in stretch pants getting off track of the "lecture." I got absolutely nothing out of the class and I cann't believe she is a prof.
This was a great class! Maria has so much knowledge of Latin America and really adds to lecture with her personal anecdotes. The reading was so interesting, and overall an awesome class. However, syllabus changed a lot and we did not cover all the material we should have. Crunched for time between lectures and videos.
This class was the worst in three years at WWU. The professor can't teach and once she stops reading her notes she's lost in lala land.
The bad reviews that you are reading are true, super easy class but she is lazy and the class is down right painful to attend. If you can handle the bordom it is an easy A or B class.
dear god, make sure you have games on your phone because it may be the only thing that keeps you awake in this calss
Didn't encourage disscusion or questions. Boring class.
worst prof. I ever had in my five years of college at 4 different universities. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES!!!!
I don't know why so many people on here rate her bad, I thought she was easy, well organized, and easy to follow. These people just sound lazy or incompetent. She's not the best teacher, but she isn't a bad teacher.
I had elementary school teachers more deserving of a doctorate than this woman. The highlight of the course for me was when she, an "expert in Latin America" moaned about how Puerto Ricans have no rights, and I corrected her by saying "They've voted against becoming a state several times." After which she stammered something incoherent.
If you take classes from her take them summer quarter. She is much more relaxed and her kids convince her to grade assignments easier, and talk her out of assignments. Childhood across cultures is a good one.
I was not interested in any of her classes I took, but when i had trouble or questions she offered me extra credit which really helped. a nice lady and tries to help as much as she can
Very nice, but her study guides for the tests are very different than the actual tests, so they dont really help. Her lectures are long and boring. she dosnt really interact with the class too much, just reads off of her over head slides. Dont have to take notes.. because the test material is based on the books, which are also boring to read.
she's very enthusiastic about anthro, but her study guides and lecture notes are in outline format and sometimes pretty vague. her tests are not like the test reviews. discussion groups are boring and a waste of time. i dont think i learned anything from the teacher, but i learned from the readings in the book.
seems really nice and enthusiastic - but, hard to follow what she wants you to know from lecture because you're too busy copying overheads. difficult to get ahold of. I easily got B's on the tests from DOING THOROUGH STUDYGUIDES - it is SO worth it to take the time and do what she tells you to study!! some material is really interesting too!
Terrible professor. She does not know how to speak publicly and her study guides are innacurate. AVOID!!!
why this woman is teaching, i have no idea. horrible lecturer, does not know how to talk to a large class. not a terribly hard class if you can get past Chavez's stupidity - i never once read the book or studied (except for discussion group readings - go to those) and got a B.
Doesn't come to class on test days, only follows her outline..and keeps saying "we'll talk about that later"..and we don't! Not a really deep person...didn't like it..bah!
Maria tries REALLY hard to engage students, but doesn't have the kind of natural personality it takes. Lectures are boring. Exams are basically from the text, so read that instead and just go to class for the films (also on the tests). And don't sit in front, she tends to yelll into her microphone and you want to be as far from that as possible.
she seems very enthusiastic about anthro, but she's not a very good teacher. pointless 2 go 2 class except 4 the movies & discussion groups. Very unorganized & lectures r all slides that she changes before u have time to finish writing. however, she will, if you need help/ extra credit, will help you out which is very nice and helpful.
Professor: If you visit her in her office she's more than willing to help. Class: Don't have to go to class to pass but is helpful in remembering some the examples through the movie clips (tested on pretty much all the examples). Test: Pretty straightforward, do study guide and read notes should be fine. *study and understand examples!!
I don't know what all these people are talking about-Maria is amazing! She's so passionate about everything she teaches, the class is extremely well organized, and she ads a great deal to the discussions. Also one of the nicest, most helpful people ever, both in her office and in class. Her class shaped and changed my entire career goals.
Once I stopped going to class my grades skyrocketed. I couldn't take her hyper bouncyness, but I overlooked it when I got a good grade. Super easy class. As long as you READ THE BOOK, which follow the POSTED lecure notes your good to go. All the questions on the test are common sense.
She is an AMAZING teacher! if you ever have aproblem go talk to her! she is so helpful and loves the subjects that she teaches!!!!! i wish that i could take all of my anth classes from her!!!!!
you just take notes in class, but beware you have to write fast! It helps a lot to read the book, though it is not required. I would like to disagree with some comments; she covered everything that was on tests and her study guide is really clear. She is really enthusiastic about her subject and has actually done fieldwork with Mayan cultures.
Not a great professor. I always studied A LOT for the tests and never did well. She wasn't particularly interested in helping me do better next time. Not my favorite professor
hands down the most USELESS CLASS to attend. Not only does she skip lines in her OWN NOTES THAT ARE PRETYPED AND ON BLACKBOARD, but she also rambles on about topics that have NOTHING to do with class. I went to this class about 10 times in one quarter and got an A-. Read the book, read her notes, but whatever you do, DONT GO TO CLASS!!!
maria is very knowledgeable and very passionate about her subject. she has pre-typed notes which makes it difficult to listen and write at the same time. she goes extremely fast, you have to remind her to slow down. the class is very interesting and it will give you a different outlook on others as you take it. tests are fair, read the book.
Hard to sit through a whole class...
You really have to get to know Maria. In a smaller class setting, she is extremely encouraging and supportive. She is a great person. She is also a very easy grader, and a great discussion leader.
Interesting class, but Maria's method of teaching is distracting and a little bewildering. You have to take pages and pages of notes during her lectures. On the other hand, tests are pretty easy as long as you read the book and/or understand what she's talking about.
Maria Chavez is one of the most passionate teachers you will have at Western. She really tries to challenge you why keeping her class interesting and never dull. SHe is great professor and if you have the chance to take of one her classes you shouldn't think twice.
Maria is a very sweet lady and will do anything she can to help. As a professor, she is awful. She goes off on tangents and often times they are difficult to follow. The class is interesting though so I recommend taking it. She's a nice lady, just make sure you read the book.
If you want an easy class you dont have to go to, take this one!!! In fact, you will do better if you dont go. I did! Maria's notes and explanations are impossible to understand. My only reason to go to class was for entertainment because she was so bazaar! All you need for tests is in the book.
If you want an easy class you dont have to go to, take this one!!! In fact, you will do better if you dont go. I did! Maria's notes and explanations are impossible to understand. My only reason to go to class was for entertainment because she was so bazaar! All you need for tests is in the book.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! I promise you that you will be bored out of your mind and it is a waste of time if you are just trying to complete a GUR. I love anthropology and she made want to never take another anthropology class again.
Coming into the class, I was interested in the subject. However, I made the mistake of trying to focus my studying around her notes and ended up confused more than anything. She uses the book more than she puts on in class, the notes she provides are almost pointless and she goes off on tangents every lecture.
Does not portray a wide knowledge base or clarity in communicating ideas. All actual information acquisition is done by students through texts.
I actually really enjoyed this class. The lecture topics did differ somewhat from what was in the book/what we were tested on, but I found going to class extremely interesting. I've definitely learned a lot from the class and I would never regret taking it.
I'm not sure what all the bad ratings are about, except varying degrees of perception. Take a seminar with Maria and you will find it much different than lecture! Yes, she does go off on tangents - that's what makes it interesting. Meet her in her office - take the time - she is more than willing to work with anyone! Loved the class!
She is boring as they come in lecture. All she does is read off of the notes and adds nothing to them. Test were difficult for me and I am usually a good tester, not sure why. I thought it was gonna be a good class from the first week but then it just got worse and worse as the weeks went on. I wish she would have put the notes up before lectures.
She acts like she doesn't care about this class because its a 100 level class. But on the tests she adds in pointless information and words everything weird. Her notes are horrible and she jumps around a lot making her seem like a horrible teacher. She gives a study guide and doesn't follow it all the way seeming pointless.
booo! terrible class, avoid taking a class from her at all costs. She doesn't even know the material herself. She's a terrible lecturer, she doesn't finish her sentences, has bad grammar at times. Test don't really have anything to do with lecture. The books required for this class were bias as made a lot of generalizations.
Very bad teacher. I can see now why she is a lecturer and not an actual professor. She sucks at teaching. She should have her PhD revoked and her credential reexamined. Absolute Garbage
Most useless professor at Western. I've taken 2 classes from her. Lectures straight from the book with no original thought, her typed notes are borderline plagiarism. Never responds to emails, ever. Takes 2-3 weeks to post exam scores. Study guide is worthless. Only go for attendance pts. just read the book. Butchers my favorite subject.
The topics were really interesting. The book is huge and a bit vague but you don't read the whole thing. The study guides really help you out on the test. I hated taking so many notes in class. Approx 4 pages per day! Extra creadit ops. Tests don't get posted for weeks. overall ok class.
I loved this class. I found the prof fun to listen to, you could tell she enjoyed her teaching. Although lectures tend to be difficult to follow at times, if you read the chapters before exams and follow the study guide you'll be fine. She points out things to read during lecture, read them! All in all i really enjoyed her class!
Well one thing I will say is she cares about the subject. She is a nice lady but needs to redo all of her notes! The notes in her class were completely pointless and her lectures were all over the place. As well the subject was too broad and she needs a more centralized subject. Take the class but not with Maria
She definitely cares about this subject, and it is pretty basic. Her notes make sense when she's lecturing, but when I look back at them, I can't tell what I was learning. She is a nice lady, but not necessarily the best professor. It is important to read the book and she shows a lot of films in class we are tested on,so go to class.
Class is easy, but as enthusiastic as Maria is, she doesn't seem to care much about teaching such a low level class. She shows a lot of videos and was gone a whole week for the Obama Inauguration. Didn't learn very much, but thats ok because i dont care for the subject anyways. Just a GUR.
There were interesting topics in the class, but it's hard to follow her notes. She abbreviates unnecessarily in them. Not a very interesting lecturer. Her study guides help on tests, but won't get you an A (did i mention it takes hours to find the info for the study guides?) If you are taking it as a GUR: don't.
She's nice and funny, and very enthusiastic about her subject. However, her notes (which she lectures directly from) are confusing and she seems to rely on the internet a lot for statistics.I didn't find most of the discussions thought-provoking either. I don't read the book much or go to a lot of class, but I have a B, so it's easy enough.
terrible notes, lots of reading, attendance mandatory, despite all this you can get away with just reading the book and do fine. Just be sure to attend the group discussions, which are actually interesting and allow great group discussion. Chavez also has lots of enthusiasm and knowledge on the subject and seems empathetic to students.
Horrible lectures that made no sense. I hated the class and getting in touch with the professor to get help or to clear up information is IMPOSSIBLE! She does not respond to emails or phone calls.
Peoples Of Latin America was by far the worst class I have ever taken at University. The class was terribly organized, the material was unclear and the lecture pace was so so varied as was the subject matter I couldn't follow anything. Avoid this teacher!
Worst professor I had at Western. The class is awful. I just remember sitting the class thinking how ridiculous she was. You also have one day where you do a "lab" discussion with a TA. It's pretty boring and obnoxious, so be aware! She's just really annoying! Take another anthro class to get the GUR, but NOT HER!
Chavez is a terrible prof. Notes make no sense at all so don't even take them. All tests based on the book so just study the study guides she gives and the book and you'll do fine. Discussion groups are terrible because no one else is interested in the subject. Overall worthless class, Chavez should not be working as a college prof
Useless teacher, Instead of teaching her method is talking about nothing for 20 minutes, and then putting in a movie that has nothing to do with the tests. This is annoying especially as it is a lecture class. When you ask for help, be prepared to get no response. Stay away if possible.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. She cant figure out power point, youtube, how to play DVD's, nothing electronic. Her lectures are not helpful, the tests come straight out of the book. Her study guides are very poorly written, they are confusing and ask for the same definitions multiple times. Worthless class and worthless professor
Chavez is really bad at teaching. She literally just paraphrases the textbook. she really just sucks. She doesn't teach, she just talks. Very scatterbrained, and kind of a ditz. If you're interested in anthro and want to take something out of the class, don't take it with her.
Chavez is one of the worst professors I've ever had. She should not be teaching college, all her power points are straight from the book and unorganized, going to class is often a waste of time. To do well you just need to read the book, study guides are poorly put together.
Of every professor I have ever taken, Maria has to be the most disorganized and unclear one yet. I could go on and on about this, but sometimes less is more. Please avoid this professor if you can, for the sake of your learning and to avoid a lot of unnecessary frustration!
Horrible teacher! Should not be teaching at a college level. Spent half her class stating her point of view on religion. Tests have nothing to do with her lectures at all. She won't answer questions, she doesn't care. Don't take her class. If you are stuck with it just read the book and you will do fine. Waste of time.
awful professor but easy class. good advice - don't to class and just read the book. everything on her tests is in the textbook (a few questions from videos). going to class is completely pointless because her lectures make no sense, her notes make no sense, and she will only confuse you terribly and rant about unrelated things.
Chavez is kind of crazy and her lectures make no sense. Her powerpoints are just like one word descriptions that later don't help at all during the test. The study guide is helpful but the questions on the test get repetitive and she uses a lot of "All of the above" options which can throw you off. It's just like another history class.
A joke of a professor. Doesn't understand what she is teaching.
She's really nice. Her tests are easy, all you need to do is read the powerpoint a couple of times and maybe read the book. Easily got A's on tests and only studied for a day.
Professor Chavez lacks organization in her presentations and does not seem to have a full understanding of her subject. Despite trying to make the class relatable by throwing out random pop culture phrases that do not apply to the class, she cannot seem to make her class anything more than a vague history of how harsh being an immigrant is.
Prof. Chavez does not really seem to have a clear understanding of her material, is completely disorganized, and flakey. Her lectures are quasi-political rants with little to no real information or theory. This is a joke of an anthropology class, however, it is extremely easy, especially if you read the books.
The only positive is that this class was easy. Maria used heinously outdated material, and her lectures were scattered, disorganized, and often biased. On a personal note, she was very rude in handling a situation involving a personal emergency, and was very reluctant and off-putting when scheduling a make-up exam.
Maria does march to the beat of her own drum, but hey she's fun. Her tests are easy! The weekly discussion groups are alright. I go to class to listen, just read the text ahead of time and you'll do great. I study for an hour before each test and do very well. Test questions are straight from the study guide.
I was very disappointed with this class. Most of the time Chavez is incoherent and has personal rants. Her slide shows are terrible, and her lectures are awful. Prior to this class I took Soc 269 with Tsunokai (Best Class on Campus) and in my opinion, ANTH 104 is a very mediocre version of that class.
This was the worst class I have ever taken at Western. It's an easy A but Chavez is a joke. Her slides are awful, all her reading material and videos are outdated and her lectures mostly consist of personal biases. She abbreviates almost everything on her slides to the point that you can't understand it and she is extremely vague.
I started going to class, until I realized the textbook is 20x more clear and helpful. I was warned about Chavez too, but I thought I'd give her a chance. It's just sad because the subject matter is pretty interesting, but you'd never know with the way she presents it. VERY unorganized and makes easy material confusing. Easy class, but BEWARE.
I was super excited to take this class and thought I would ignore her low ratings and give Chavez a chance.Don't take this class! She is very scatter brained! Her exams and expectations are unclear and unreasonable! Please be warned. This class has me headed to the Dean of Anthropology to report her unprofessional structure and conduct
the worst professor I've taken here so far. Her lecture notes mean nothing, and her class is not worth showing up to. I thought this would be an easy A class, but this class is very difficult to study for. Study guides are unclear. Very one-sided and unreasonable with students. Loves to talk about UCLA. Extra credit offered. Avoid this professor.
she's eccentric to say the least. very scattered but I enjoyed her stories about there travels. but if I suggest you avoid this class.... However the gentleman in my class were eye candy enough for me to come to every class.
Worst class I've taken so far. Wasn't helpful at all. Going to class was useless, she spent the entire time talking about her travels, which is great and all, but that's not what's on the tests. I would avoid her definitely.
She is the worst professor at WWU. I honestly felt like she was robbing me of my tuition. I would only recommend her anthro 201 class if you need the GUR to graduate, and if you did not take that class with her, it would hold back your graduation. Besides that unique life altering situation, I would stay away from her at all cost.
Really a terrible professor. She shifts from a thing to another and sometimes can drift off her train of thought and confuse everybody altogether. Her quizzes and discussion group questions are ambiguous, and even repeated sometimes, I don't recommend her at all, really disgusted me from Anthropology.
Absolutely useless. Never went to class except for discussion group (which no one was interested in) and test days. Tests still contained editing notes to reword some of her questions. Don't bother going to lecture, she'll only confuse you. The book will be your teacher. Study it and you'll do fine, the tests are straight out of it. AVOID.
She's enthusiastic about teaching but her lectures are scattered. She's hard to follow and intimidating to talk to. The course work is easy. Most of her lectures are pretty pointless to attend, so read the book.
Definitely an entertaining woman if you are more interested in your teacher's personal lives than actually learning the curriculum. She can barely make it through a lecture without some sort of innuendo about her own sex life. She does have a lot of field experience and has a lot of knowledge somewhere in her brain...she did go to UCLA...
Let's just say, I survived the class and disorganized powerpoint presentations, and listening to her boast about UCLA. The only interesting things I got out of the course was the group presentations which were pretty interesting to listen to. Otherwise, this was a class that ended in headaches every day it met.
Worst professor I've ever had. Didn't show up to class for the first week and was late to class every day the next two weeks. She went over the syllabus probably five times, and didn't even touch on course material until maybe twenty minutes before class was out. Never again will I not trust a 1.0 rating on ratemyprof.
Terrible professor! She talks about her life more often then the slides. We had a replacement professor last week and learned more in an hour than the first 3 weeks of Maria's "lecture". Avoid her at all cost!
Awful professor. Terrible at communicating with students. Do your self a favor and never attend this class. Not even on the first day. You will become a legitimate tard if you choose to attend and listen to her rambling on about nothing.
TERRIBLE professor. Worst class I've ever taken. Her lectures are off-topic and incomprehensible. If you're in her class, DON'T go to the lectures. Save yourself the time and just read the book on your own, you'll learn a lot more than sitting in her class every day. She gives the study guides to tests a day before the test, so don't rely on that.
After a week of her not coming to class and then a week of her being late I dropped the class because I could not stand her. It is not worth it. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! She is irresponsible and immature and has nothing to teach. I am embarrassed that she is even allowed to tech at this school.
She missed the whole first week of class, and is probably the most unclear teacher out there. Couldn't get through the syllabus. Looked to transfer classes as soon as she finally showed up.
Awful teacher, abrasive personality, stubborn, off-topic, delusional. It's like she signed up to teach so she'd have a captive audience to listen to her blabber. Dropped the class a week in after we still hadn't finished going over the syllabus. DO NOT TAKE HER! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
This was an easy A class. Just remember everything on the study guide and you're set. There are no curve balls on her exams but you need to read the book. I also went to her office hours and she helped a ton. She may go off topic a lot but she truly cares and wants you to succeed if you approach her respectfully.
kinda all over the place.... visit her at her office she loves that, she raised my test score cuz she liked that i came to visit her and thought that I was a hard worker. pretty nice kinda crazy lol
Horrible teacher. Has called out students during class numerous times and insulted them by saying "who even are you?/ive never seen you here before..." During lecture she preaches about Berkley or London school of Econ...rather than explain material. Her presentations consist of random punctuation that doesnt make sense. Something needs to be done.
The most embarrassing excuse for a professor that I have experienced yet in my educational career. Spends the entire class ranting about her heritage and belittling students who ask questions. She gave a borderline illegible test and screamed at students for asking questions for clarification. Taught absolutely nothing, avoid at all costs.
she can be slightly entertaining to watch, but not when you are paying so much money to attend her lectures. awful professor
She is very knowledgeable in her field however she doesn't really know how to teach.
Just do yourself a favor and never have her as a teacher. She is absolutely terrible. Every lecture she goes on random tangents about her own experiences and you learn nothing. Class should be called Maria Chavez 201
No one should have to take from this professor. She is the worst teacher I have ever had at my time at WWU. She takes her presentation directly from the book, and will go off on rants that has nothing to do with anything. You never know if she'll actually show up for class or how late she will be. She is completely unreliable. She's terrible.
She's all over the place with her explanations and tends to go completely onto a different tangent. Her tests are based solely on the book, so there really is no need in coming to class besides to have the asnswers to the extra credit. She also does not cover all of the chapters needed for the test. Save yourself from having to teach yourself.
She is the worst professor at Western, and I have no idea how she hasn't been fired yet. I learned more about Bob Marley and weed than anything anthropology related. Tests are textbook based (because her lectures are nonsense). Basically, this class was a waste of my time and money.
Look Chavez is a nice human being, but her class is dull. Most of it was spent arguing back and forth with a student or discussing thing entirely unrelated to whatever we were discussing. She's a nice person, but just not a very good professor. Also slightly insane.
Chavez is a nice person but just makes no sense while lecturing and her power points are very unclear as well. Discussion groups are the most interesting part of the class and the readings for it are actually really interesting! Your textbook is your bible... It is your only hope of getting through the class with a good grade.
I would give her all zeros if i could. She honestly was the worst teacher ever! Made absolutely no sense and you could never get a clear answer from her. Her grammar and spelling are super bad which makes it seem like she doesn't care. Everything is textbook reading because going to class is extremely useless and a waste of time.
Prof Chavez is a terrible teacher. She makes no sense in class and only likes to talk about herself. She assigns weekly readings from the book, yet when the study guide is given, many chapters that were read are not on the guide. The guides do not stay true to the tests. She is awful.
If you want an easy A and do not want to learn anything, take this class. It is impossible to follow her train of thought. She rambles and talks about totally unrelated subjects a lot. Just read the textbook and go to lecture to get a gist of what will be on the test, and you'll get a good grade.
Everyone seems to dislike this teacher but I really liked her. She is very excited about what she is teaching, and she does tend to go off topic sometimes but I thought it was fine. She's a smart woman and cares about what she's teaching.
I signed up for this course a few quarters ago with Chavez as the instructor, but after multiple absences and tardiness within the first two weeks of class her TA, Lisa Spicer, took over. Spicer taught the class well. I enjoyed her smooth and clear teaching style and admired her enthusiasm for the subject. I would recommend staying away from Chavez
She loves the class, and has a huge passion for Anthropology. Unfortunately this gets lost in her personal anecdotes and her scattered lectures. DO NOT be afraid to select "all of the above" on her exams. I thought no way could a teacher use that option so much. It stopped me from getting an A. The other 2 tests I made sure to pick that option.
Worst Professor Ever! Spacey as hell, no point in even showing up to class because she gives you no information that isn't on the power point slides. Don't buy the book either, I doubt she has even leafed through it.
Does Not follow the syllabus but is excited about the course
I am in week 3 of a 6 week summer quarter taking an online class. I was given no specific due dates, the class started a week late, no rubric, unable to access all of the necessary materials and unsure of what any of her expectations are. I am very irritated because the late start date now means if I withdraw it will show on my transcript.
She's a great teacher. I don't know what these people are talking about. If you talk to her and ask specific questions you won't be left confused. I love her.
I took Anth 104 online with Maria, and it was absolutely the poorest class I've ever taken. It was almost as though Maria forgot that she was teaching the class after week 1. The syllabus was from the wrong quarter. We had two assignments per week, none of which were graded until I think week 9 of the course. She responded to no ones questions. F--
Maria has a big heart and cares a lot about anthropology but she is not a good professor- the lectures have nothing to do with the work outside of class, she goes on irrelevant tangents, she is extremely unclear about assignments and didn't grade any assignments until the end of the quarter... do not take this class.
One of the worst professors I've had. She hardly ever graded anything, so I had no idea if I was doing well or not. The assignments were due twice a week and were usually busy work. Her instructions were almost always unclear. She was completely unaccessible via email or office hours, and the course isn't organized at all.
Might have been one of the worst teachers i've had in my entire life. Completely unorganized. Doesn't reply to any emails in a considerable amount of time. Has only graded 2 of the 20 assignments we've had and it's already the end of the quarter. Says grades won't be uploaded until the last day of the quarter. AVOID THIS "TEACHER" AT ALL COSTS.
While Maria is SO kind, she is the most confusing professor I've ever had. That being said, this class was incredibly easy. Take home exams and one group project. Just show up, participate a little and you'll get an A
This Anthropology class is conducted by the worst. teacher. ever. Maria Chavez doesn't even teach the right material, Anthropology is supposed to be the study of dinosaurs; not whatever this culture crap is. Don't get me wrong, the study of culture is great and all but I came here for dinosaurs. So stupid.
