I am not a fan of this class in general because the grade is based mainly on presentations and group projects. However Professor Colman makes it more difficult because she is incredibly picky but does not have clear grading criteria. She likes to take points off for very superficial things during your presentations that aren't listed in the rubric.
Her lectures have little to nothing to do with her assignments. Your grade is mainly based on presentations to which she does not offer very much feedback. She's also the I'm-right-you're-not type.
This is the wort class and the worst professor you can ever get in your college career at usc, trust me
People on here are being too harsh. She is not the greatest, but she was a nice teacher and I felt she cared about her students. Everyone seemed to get very similar grades on assignments so hard to stand out on the curve. We did 4 impromptu speeches which I found very helpful. Lectures were enjoyable, collaborative learning environment.
Colman focused on the growth of her students mainly in presentations and writing memos. People are being pretty harsh on her, especially since I felt I grew a lot in this class and most students I believe did as well. Her instructions were also pretty clear and once I understood what she wanted I received the grades I deserved.
I don't like her because her class is very unorganised. For instance, to have the last group presentation due in about one week is just hilarious. In addition, the group project sucks when you have free riders in the group, and you can not help them like in other business classes because they have to present in real person.
Professor Colman cares about her students, always trying to help to shape the best recruits. What's hard is 302T isn't curved and some assignments are worth a lot. The final project is difficult because it's team based, so your team matters! The course material is just difficult. It's not because of Colman. She always puts in every ounce of effort.
Colman has no grading criteria. You can follow her rubric to the T and she will still deduct points for no reason. She gives little to no feedback because the averages for the class were high. Lastly, Colman comes off as a know-it-all. She was quick to put students down if their thoughts and notions didn't align with hers. Avoid her if possible!
Colman is definitely one of the better 302 teachers. She has a very clear rubric and all you need to do is make sure you follow it as closely as possible. It's not an easy A, typical Marshall, but it's not impossible. It is more lecture heavy than other 302 teachers and sometimes the lectures seem useless but all and all she's a good option for 302
Her grading is subjective, gives poor feedback, and she has an enormous ego. Try to find someone else.
AVOID AVOID AVOID. Listen STAY AWAY at all cost. She is so bad. I could write a paper on her bad teaching.
Colman is a pretty good professor. Although she is very judgy of other peoples opinions or the way they present. But her grading is truly based on her rubric, although there are times when she shows bias by giving students she likes better scores. Dont need the textbook just read the slides she posts.
For a communications professor, Maria Colman is one of the worst communicators I have had during my time at USC. Being in her class felt like I was taken back to middle school. Pop quizzes, absurd homework assignments, presentations on topics that would be more applicable for a class of third graders than business students. Do not take her class.
Mrs. Colman is a good professor in class, but her grading criteria is so arbitrary. No matter how succinct my papers/speeches were, she found a way to downgrade me to a B average. She knows who she wants to have A's in her class, and her grading reflected that.
DO NOT TAKE her, TAKE ANYONE ELSE BUT HER, OR POSTPONE 302 UNTIL ANOTHER SEMESTER, YOU WILL REMEMBER THIS MESSAGE MONTHS FROM NOW. She is literally the rudest professor you could imagine, she treats you like a high school student. Her rubric is literally useless, she wont follow it, remember AVOID her.
Could not agree more with the comments below. She finds a way to give you the grade she wants, will curve people to a B. She chooses from the first day, so make a good impression. Super hard grader and obsessed with accounting majors (feen for the Big Four). She's bias in grading and will make sure to curve you down. Wait to take anybody else.
Super tough grader. Finds a way to curve those who aren't accounting majors to a B on every single assignment. She gives you a quiz the second day of class and never rounds. Marked a girl down for a presentation because of a glare on her glasses. Unless you're working for the big four, she's not really interested.
She's a hard grader but she sticks the rubric and you definitely come out of her class learning so much more "relevant" things(cover letter, resume, email contacts etc) than you would with any other Marshall classes. You also have to keep in mind that what makes or breaks your 302 experience is 40% your professor and 60% your class.
Colman is a solid professor for this class. However, your grade is mostly based off your abilities in public speaking. She is strict but chill. If you really want to do well, make sure she likes you. Grading in this type of class is more subjective, so her opinions of you can be important when she is grading you. This class taught me a lot.
This class is totally wasting time & money (tuition & useless textbooks), and it's just 1.5 units! During classes, the teacher is demanding and will ignore you if your answer is not perfect for her. In this 1.5-unit class, we have to do 3 assignments (with unclear instruction and grading criteria), 5 presentations, & 10 PitchVantage presentations
Coleman is quite intimidating, which is rough because Communications is a public speaking class. Try to participate and get her to like you. Honestly, your grade in the class depends on your skills in public speaking. Her class is an easy B, but a hard A unless you're naturally a good speaker.
You will be a better speaker at the end of her class, but do not take her if you care about keeping a high GPA. She is the most difficult in her grading compared to other 302 classes and gives random pop quizzes on textbook readings. In addition, she only gives ONE A per class section. I do give her props for making boring lectures interesting, tho
Many say she doesn't give out an A, but on a rare occasion she does, you just have to work HARD for it. I will say that my presentation skills and career portfolio greatly improved after having to work in this class. I will say... don't get confused because she is awful at answering questions and expects you to figure it out yourself which sucks...
My experience with Professor Colman was purely negative. Her lectures are worthless; You could skip everyone of them and be fine, but you have to be there or risk losing credit. She is condescending and rude to talk with, which is surprising coming from a professor of such poor quality. Save your semester and get a different teacher.
Ignore the reviews and comments about her here, she is actually a professor who wants to you to succeed. I took her online and giving presentations were so much easier because they're all pre-recorded. There are some impromptu speeches here and there, but they're easy. Take her! She has a small class size so less people to present in front of
Avoid her at all costs
Professor Colman is the best professor that I have had at USC. She cares about her students & wants them to succeed. Almost every student in my class walked out w/ an internship. She is very helpful and a wonderful resource to have. Ignore all poor reviews; if you are willing to learn, her class will be the most beneficial out of all BUAD classes.
She assigns something that is due for every class and her rubric is so vague, which frustrates the whole class. Rude and condescending. Her lectures are easy to understand but the in-class assignments/group projects are such a waste of time but necessary to complete for participation points. Take any other professor for this class. Easy B, hard A.
Anyone who is frustrated by Prof. Colman should be frustrated by their own inability to read her rubrics. If you do so and show an effort to participate in class, you will do well. There's a slight learning curve with memos and Bongo. The material is mostly common sense but the grading is specific. READ. THE. RUBRIC! and the class is a breeze.
She's really not as bad as people say. To do well make sure you turn in assignments on time and *follow the rubric* as she grades directly off of that. There are a lot of assignments but that allows you to do poorly on one or two and still end with a good grade!
Idk if it's because she improved a lot, but Professor Colman is definitely better than the reviews say. She is extremely organized and cares a lot about her students. You will learn a lot of valuable information in this class. However, she is a very tough grader, and the final is difficult. With effort, the class is an easy B and a very hard A
I took this class on zoom over the summer. I had very low expectations given the reviews people wrote on here. I found that she was very nice and accommodating to students concerns/needs. She wants everyone to improve and succeed in this class, which is evident in her character.I have horrible social anxiety but still found this class enjoyable!
Thanks to professor Colman, I've learned a sufficient amount of information when it comes to the career world, and want you to succeed. Get ready to participate and she will provide needed critical feedback in order to make you grow. Follow her rubrics and fake it til you make it in presentations!
The course content was valuable and easy to digest, however Professor Colman is not an easy grader. Youre also graded mainly by presentations in this class, so if youre not comfortable with public speaking, it will be a challenge. I did enjoy the class + the content, but prof colman graded quite tough :/
Professor Colman is nicer than other profs but she thinks her way of communications is the only way of communications. Not at all understanding of different opinions. Grading criteria is so meticulous and gives unclear instructions. Worst of all, she thinks she's the only right person on earth.
Professor Colman's 302 class taught me more applicable skills than any other class I've taken at USC. I can truly say that I came out of this class as a much more competent speaker. If you make an effort to come out of your comfort zone and take her rubric feedback into consideration, you can surely get an A. Highly recommend her!
Do not take this class unless you're totally inept at public speaking and job searching. She wasted so much time with irrelevant activities the class had actually little to no substance. Apart from a poor curriculum, she is very condescending and is ignorant. Would not recommend
Avoid her at all costs, a professor teaching communication but makes you discouraged to communicate. Feedback is useless nor helpful, nor very ineffective.
Professor Colman's teaching method and material are very dated. Everything are based on Memo, so be ready to write a bunch of them. Micro-agressive, and rude feedback are given to student in public and in private comments. At the end of the semester she deleted all the course material as if she was afraid that she would be reviewed by the school.
imagine that one substitute teacher in high school that snitches on the whole class to your teacher but in college
Follow the rubrics to her assignments, 1000 points total for grade and you'll do fine. Not a perfect professor but if you suck at public speaking, you're gonna hate the course and the teacher. Presentation heavy so the sooner you realize to not stress about public speaking... yeah this class is light
I don't understand why Professor Colman gets such a bad rep. The class is pretty easy, so it is hard to get an A because of the curve, but if you do all of the work, show up to class, and FOLLOW THE RUBRIC SHE GIVES, then you should be just fine. But I can not stress it enough her rubric is an actual cheat sheet, so use it.
lots of assignments and presentations. best way to do good is to follow the rubric and guidelines professor gives you. there is one final at the end which is difficult and requires you to memorize a lot of information.
Honestly, my first C in my academic career but I will say Colman gave me a reality check. She's a hard grader but she's trying to bring the best out of you. I'd recommend the course to someone who struggles with public speaking trying to burst out their shell, but not people who have the experience. Great professor, but put in the work for the A.
Adding to previous review below - I missed a month because I went on an adventure out of state, forgot how I ended up there, and got sick after. That's the reason for my C, every presentation I gave she gave me an A for which I assume my experience in public speaking carried me. I didn't do a bunch of assignments, if you do it you'll be fine.
Prof. Colman is tough but fair. She cares very much about students and their achievement, but her method ruined it - she focuses too much on methods that she overlooks the results. Her hand-holding teaching style would be a great high school teacher, not so much a college professor.
Follow the rubric for each assignment. She is very clear about what she expects. A lot of assignments and presentations. This class did help me become more confident with my public speaking. She is a tough grader but fair and wants you to improve!
She is definitely a tough grader (I think that's across the board for all 302 profs) but she really wants to help students improve their presentation / speaking skills. If you come to graded class activities and put in the time to match your work to her rubrics, you will do pretty well. She's also flexible if you communicate things ahead of time.
While Maria Colman is notably a tough grader, this is also two-fold, as she gives detailed critique and cares a lot about each student's individual progress in the course. Be prepared to have many assignments, but also prepared to learn invaluable skills for developing your professional self. You will not regret choosing her for 302.
This teacher gives no leniency and will ensure you have a difficult time in her class. She decided to give us a large project during finals week on top of having two other projects to do and a final. I would recommend avoiding this class at all costs; the teaching methods are also outdated. She has a very rude tone and gives awful feedback.
I would not recommend taking her class, she does not give good feedback and picks on kids. The way she teaches is very outdated, and she is a short-tempered person. On the feedback she does give it usually turns out to be rude and not. an understanding teacher.
Throughout my time in school, this is by far the worst teacher that I have ever had. She gave us an entire presentation during our finals week. This made it a struggle for me and my other classmates to be able to study for our exam.
This instructor is unforgiving and will make sure you struggle in her class. She chose to assign us a substantial assignment during finals week in addition to two other projects and a final. This class should absolutely be avoided; the instructors' approaches are antiquated as well. She speaks in a very nasty manner and offers poor criticism.
I wouldn't advise enrolling in her class since she criticizes students and picks on the younger students. She is a person with a short fuse and teaches in a very antiquated manner. When she does provide criticism, it frequently comes out as nasty and uncaring.
This is by far the worst instructor I have ever had during my time in school. During finals week, she presented to us in its entirety. My classmates and I found it difficult to study for our test as a result.
It's safe to say she is way behind on modern teaching and honestly she should just retire and move to Hawaii. The world will not miss a communications teacher.
The curriculum and teaching style of Professor Colman are quite out of date. Prepare to write a lot of memos because they are the foundation of everything. She removed all of the course materials at the conclusion of the semester, as though she was concerned about a school evaluation.
Imagine the one substitute teacher in college who, like the one in high school, informs your teacher about the entire class.
She cannot use google slides and she uses firefox red flag fr
Kept us for extra time in class when we had our final presentation the next day to prepare for.
She has no concept of time, which is possibly a result of her extreme age. She does, however, party hard when she does.
She is clearly extremely behind in teaching, and honestly, she should give up and relocate to Hawaii. The globe won't miss an educator in communications.
I don't recommend enrolling in her class since she berates pupils and targets the younger ones. She has a short fuse and imparts knowledge in a rather archaic way. When she does criticize, she typically does it in a mean and callous way.
She is stuck in the cretaceous period.
Would not recommend taking this class unless you need a nap period which she probably not even let you sleep #worst teach 2023, if you want to have a good future don't take her course.
All of the comments are absolutely true. Do not take her class.
Bottom line: I am a better presenter and public speaker thanks to Professor Colman. Group projects were annoying but I can tell my presentation skills have improved tenfold thanks to her projects. Class participation matters but class was always a good time so it never felt forced. Take her!
Sooooooo mean, really bad. Never ever take her class unless you have a good temper.
I took her class back in 2016 when she just joined USC. The quality of teaching/attitude/professorship I got then really had me question whether the 4 credit of tuition was even worth it.... It is just shocking that after 7 years she is still employed by the school and misguiding students, class after class.
I mean....if you look up the "startup" she founded and look at the products she is selling... says much about the intelligence and things you will learn in this class
she was really rude tbh and i did not enjoy her class - was not understanding at all about circumstances that caused me to miss class a few times
Mean grader
Colman should not be employed by USC or honestly anyone
Professor Colman is caring and understanding if you let her know your situation. You will definitely see improvement in your presentation skills by the end of the class. Reduce your filler words, be ready to read & always have something to say. The final exam should have a better study guide; use the Quizlet study cards; you'll be fine.
Colman is extremely mean & insensitive. Tough grader! Puts you on the spot ALL THE TIME. Dude... if you blush, she points it out!!! She always stares into your soul as if she was gonna win an award for a starring contest. Unless you have good temper, DO NOT TAKE HER. Final exam study guide was incredibly vague, & nothing on it was on the final.
SO mean! She should just relocate to Timbuktu she is SO bad. Made the entire semester SO depressing and degrading.
I have no idea why she is rated so low. I LOVE professor Colman and loved taking her class. She is very easy to talk to about class assignments and questions. There are a lot of presentations and activities in the ELC but she well prepares you. The class is very engaging and flies by
Let me help all of you who are deciding what teacher to take. All of these negative reviews are pushed out as a smart tactic to make it so spots are saved for their friends. It's that simple. Please take her she is the best option hands down, and since all these mean comments are being written, it should show you that she really is the best.
RUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
nope.
wouldnt take her
There are too many negative reviews, and I'm not sure why - the class is very interactive and has lots of public speaking, but I came out of this class as a better presenter and communicator. Colman is not mean at all and has very clear grading criteria and great feedback. She is kinda funny as well. Classes were fun.
I wish I would've taken another 302 professor, by far she is the professor who assigns the most work for 302.
She may be a decent professor, and your communication skills may improve. However, all the negative criticism is valid. She is a vile, mean, condescending, dismissive, and unapproachable creating a hostile classroom atmosphere, belittles students for asking questions. first lecture and she scrutinized international students for their names even.
PLEASE TAKE HER! I am someone who was terrified of public speaking (still am) but her class made it a lot more tolerable. The course load also wasn't too heavy and was manageable. Yes, professor Colman can be straight-forward and direct but her feedback are always helpful and she genuinely cares about the learning experience of her students.
I've taken her class before, and personally, I found her to be the meanest professor I've encountered at USC. She treats students differently, showing clear favoritism to some while being particularly mean to others, which I found deeply unfair. This selective treatment likely explains why her ratings on RMP are so polarized.
Run from this professor. She will never give u full points on a presentation. She is so nit picky and terrible. An A is a 94% and she wants students to be in the B to B+ range so she gives bad scores on purpose. Lots of favoritism as well. Take a diff professor and it is an easy A.
Do not take this professor. She is very rude and has a fake smile 24/7. She favors athletes fsss because she literally said she has been accused of it before. She is so tough and makes it nearly impossible to get an A so she will mark points off for no reason. Any other professor is better than her.
Definitely a hard grader. She's not as bad as all the reviews say but she she is very direct with her feedback which doesn't always resonate with people. She can be very accommodating, just make sure to reach out to her&communicate and you'll be fine. The main determiners of your grade outside of presentations are the quizzes and the final exam.
Prof Colman has a low rating here because she doesn't give easy As. But I came out of her class with skills that landed me a job offer I never would've got, more confidence, and more communication abilities. So if you want to learn and become a better presenter, take Colman. If you just want an easy A, take someone else. PS shes mad funny aswell
Not sure why she gets bad reviews—she's easily one of my favorite professors. The class is flipped with lots of group presentations, but I became a better speaker through it all. She's a tough but fair grader. If you put in effort, you'll be fine. Two online quizzes and one in person final. Would definitely take her again!
My favorite and most memorable professor by far! She is very clear with what she expects, and I have come out of this class as a MUCH better presenter. She is blunt, but it is purely out of wanting you to get the most out of the class. I have kept in touch with her since the course ended, and I do not regret taking the class!
Really intersting and class is not lecture heavy. Class were discussions. Though she is a really tough grader. What could have been an easy A was a B+.
Wasted so much time to learn nothing. If you want to make friends, take this class because trauma bonding is a real thing.
While I understand that BUAD302 is a tougher class this professor certainly made it worse. The lectures were extremely unclear and difficult to engage in considering how incredibly boring they were. Much of class is wasted with tedious group activities, final group project has very little assistance and is way over demanding. DO NOT TAKE.
In my opinion, Professor Colman is one of my favorite professors at USC. She is funny and caring. 302 was my favorite class the semester I took it. She is very blunt when she gives feedback, and some people aren't used to hearing things said so directly. Overall, her rating should not be this low.
She has high expectations but are very clear about them. Genuinely helps you improve in speaking and communication. I didn't talk to her a lot but didn't notice much favoritism or anything. Blunt but fun and engaging. Lots of random low risk group work, not much work outside of class.
I just finished this class and thought Professor Colman was great. I joined the class late and was a little intimidated on the first day but once you get to know her I think she's great. It's clear she really wants to see her students succeed and I think other people are wrong when they say they learned nothing, there are a lot of valuable lessons.
Professor Colman genuinely cares about seeing improvement in her students. Her class might require more tenacity than other sections of 302 but I feel like I saw a lot of improvement in my communication skills.
Genuinely confused why ratings are so low
Professor Colman does not deserve to be rated the way she is on here. Anyone who thinks she's overly mean is missing the point of her class. By no means was this class easy, but I genuinely feel like I learned a lot and enhanced my public speaking skills a ton. Taking Colman was a great experience, and I would definitely recommend taking her class.
I understand why her ratings are low but I don't agree with them. She is preparing us for the real world. You aren't coddled anymore when you finish college. I wouldn't take it again because I got what I needed from it (an internship). University is all about challenging yourself.
Prof. Colman is not the monster professor that the ratings here claim her to be - but she is insanely strict. She grades very harshly and can sometimes say rude things. However, this was the most useful class I have ever taken for sure - and that is because of her and because of her honesty. This class definitely made me grow a lot.
She holds EVERYONE accountable. She's not the sweetest, but she's up front about that. A great professor, she just makes you work for the A. My best advice is get all assignments (SMART Goals, Cover Letter, Slideshows) looked over by her in office hours and she will help you get a good grade!! I learned so much, but def wasn't easy.
Professor Colman is quite a brutal grader, and there is A LOT of work in this class. She holds everyone to very high standards however, and is genuinely passionate about the content she teaches. If you put in a lot of effort you'll probably do fine, just expect a lot of projects. Definitely not deserving of all 1 scores she's received thus far.
Don't listen to the low ratings. Professor Colman is a caring, supportive teacher with clear expectations and thorough rubrics. Her class is fun, and I made some of my best friends there. She genuinely wants all students to succeed, inside and outside of class. Highly recommend.
