Excellent teacher, cares, explains in full detail and is very understanding
Easy lady, nice and will explain everything until you get an A in her class or any other class
This professor is extremely disorganized. Most of the class she expects an astronomical amount of work and gives little in return. Instead of teaching the class about poetry, she spends most of her time harping on grammar. The irony in this is that she does not write very well herself.
She is a great teacher i would recommend her to anyone. She just has her accent thats the only problem she makes u learn.

I had this Professor awhile ago and I must admit it took me sometime to get use her but when I did i figure it all out. All you need to is follow the structure she give you in writing the paper and you should have no problems.
i took maria for summer 1 of 7-05. she was boring and i didn't learn from her. she was not even in for the last day of class to give an exit form . A majority of students in my class failed. watch out.
Professor Maria has a thick accent which can be difficult to understand. She can be a harsh grader when marking essays and she also gets annoyed when student make ignorant mistakes; however, with this kind of professor you will surely can improve your writing.
Prof. Maria was also my teacher over the Summer of 2005. I learned a lot from her and received 8 in my final Act exam. Most of us pass the test. She was present the day of the exam and after the exam, we discussed it.I don't understand why my fellow student has to lie. Maybe you should be angry at yourself and not at the professor.
I just started this class but the accent is getting on my nerves and makes it really hard to understand her and even care what she is talking about. I get A's in all my classes but that voice alone makes me want to drop her class and I don't believe in dropping classes so you know it's really bad. Just for that reason I wouldn't suggest her class.
Ive been in this class for a month now and I have no idea what the class is about and were we are going. My classmates feels the same way. She doen't explain anything! The worst professor in the business. Don't you dare take her class! I think the department knows this thats why they sneak her on you telling you someone else is teaching the class.

You really don't know what she wants from you. She does explain it over and over because nobody gets it the first, second or third time. It is a real chore to be in her class. Deep down she is nice but her teaching leaves alot to be desired.
I am in Dr. DeVasconcelos' office giving her a thank you note. She is the BEST, not only she teaches us the required information, but she enlarges our horizons. She makes us fell creative and brilliant. I feel she is the best teacher at BMCC.
The professor teaches us the skills we need to pass our exams, and at the same time expands our horizons.
I took Prof. Devasconcelos class last year; now I am writing poetry with her and that's why i am here with her at BMCC. She is one of the kindest beings on earth and the most brilliant teacher. People who are angry is because they do not do the work and they are not mature. The best!!!

do not take this prof if u want to improve ur english skills and get good grade..she is the worst prof n doesn't repect her students. she is very demanging and rude...if english is not ur native language, do not take her, everyone in the class had a very hard time understand what she said!! She is really out of focus and doesn't seem to want to help. I'm attending every class and participating (and that counts for her the most) but still she doesn't want to help in extra credit or so. The material dealt in class is good and she is a character but I would take another professor that is more clear and helpfull.

Focused, organized, very intelligent, very good and kind.
I don't think she's qualified to teach. She was late to class almost 80% of the time,simply unacceptable. She apologizes for the lateness but who cares, once or twice is ok but almost everyday she's late 10-15mins. We pay $$$ for this class and she doesn't take that into consideration.Don't hesitate to call VP or President to complain.
This prof did not give out the BMCC student survey, because she knew she would not get a good rating. And the Eng Dept. now took her name off the catalogs so the students won't know which class she's teaching. That should give you an idea of how bad she is.
She is not that easy as it seems from the first classes. Her rating criteria is complicated. She doesn't spread your HW during semestr and keeps it all to the end. It makes hard if you have other tough classes. Material covered was good, but I would prefer another prof. Actually, I've learnt more in my Eng101.
She's a joke. She expects you to take it super serious when she constantly come to class without having any idea what she already cover. A shame. She's strict with grades and leave all the assignments to the end so getting stressed is unavoidable. She may be smart and educated but one of the worst teachers I've met. Don't take her, in any case.
This is the worse professor ever. She makes you do an oral presentation and starts to shut you down emotionally like your stupid. If you ever get this teacher i hope u withdraw ASAP. Don't pick this stupid teacher! She's not a professional english teacher. Does not even help you on her office hours that's how bad she is.

Hah, I remember Maria. She was sort of strict, but she's actually a great professor. She repeats things for those who don't understand it till it's drilled into your brain. Oh and she WILL make you feel like crap if you aren't trying to get a good grade in her class. However, she'll make you feel good if you're trying.

Stay away! I took her class a while ago. It?s true she doesn?t give evaluation sheet at the end of the semester. She would?ve get very low grade:) It seems to me that she tries to boost her rate on this website. Notice many similar ratings done in one day. May be I?m wrong. But don?t let be fooled. She is definitely not easy but not too hard either. But all the work will be worth it. You will learn so much. And she truly cares about each student and the coursework. I did an honors assignment with her and she was extremely helpful....She influenced me greatly. 2 years after taking her, I changed my major to English and I'm so happy I did so!
Maria.. she is a professor who wants you to learn but also comes off as a little brutal, this class has way to much work for remedial english but im sure that its only for the benefit of the students. Maria seems to be a nice person but she is a very strict english professor and take her class seriously or you will be out.

This professor really helped me get out of remedial English. I learned a lot with her and because of her my writing skills improved tremendously.
I really do not think she is a bad professor. Without knowing, she sparked in me an interest in Writing. Because of her, I got inside the Writer's Guild this spring. She would get frustrated over the mistakes that we make, but it is really for our own good. If you take her, you will learn from your error - as she wants to pass, not fail you.

I left this class with a A-. I would say to anyone who takes this class really participate she takes notice of it. I ended up recording what she said (guidelines) for projects because it was unclear what she really wanted. Remember to put titles on your work and write in the present tense and you'll be golden.
prof maria has a very strong accent, yet she speaks very well, she speaks clearly, and knows what she is talking about. She was very lenient when it came down to handing in late work in my class. She is very big on attendance though. i adored her, she was understanding and sweet. If she is given respect she will give respect in return. recommended!

Maria is a very inspirational professor, and I enjoyed being in her writing remedial class. We read some cool lectures, such as Monnique and Portable 50 essays. She expected assignments to be handed in.
Great professor to talk to, esp. if you need someone to talk to but I did not like her grading technique. Tough, and in my opinion, for no reason. Very precise, had her for writing intensive (dont take her for WI), very harsh with the assignments and expects you to have the same perspectives in english like she does. Nope, not cool.

This professor has high expepectations for all of her students. Attending the class everyday is a must because you are expected to read and participate. Her papers are VERY difficult to pass. For a professor who has a heavy accent and Doctorates degree in English, expects too much.

She's an awful professor. She is never clear with what she wants on an assignment and always changes what she wants last second which ends with you having a bad grade. She holds back grades even though you do the work. She is very strict and when you ask her questions about the work she gives you an attitude.
The worst professor I've ever had. Zero empathy to her students yet preaches about acceptance. Not a single positive aspect of her class; everything taught is negative (made us write about how we're oppressed as if to say we're victim-minded). She seems very manic on Zoom calls as if she needs to be institutionalized, it's very concerning. Awful.
She is never clear on what she wants for assignments. Feedback isn't helpful at all. Always complains and is very rude. She honestly made me scared to ask her anything due to her rude responses. Makes you revise your assignments various times but never changes your grade. Her assignments could get very personal.
She is very passionate about her class and her students, gives good feedback. But this class is surprisingly difficult for a remedial class; she is a tough grader. The bad reviews are due to the fact you cannot half-ass it, you have to revise, you have to read, you have to care. Want to improve at writing? Take the class. Want an easy A? Don't.
Very thought out class. The structure and progress of the class is very smart. I really appreciated the topics that were presented to write about. She builds your confidence in writing and helps you become a better writer. Really appreciate her as a professor and human.
The professor has high expectations, but engaging with the class structure pays off. Revisions are key - don't half-ass it. unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep alongside the free textbook. Tough grader, but you'll become a better writer.
