Very good teachers and nice person. Knows what she's talking about. Learn alot about lit and writing. Easy grader. No exams. Only wrote 2 papers in the class. Highly recommended.
This professor really deserves a hot "chile". Esta rica...Oh by the way, the class is fine.
She is a hottie, but snobbish. Class was very easy. Each class was a discussion, and two papers due. No tests, no midterm, or final.
She is a very good professor. She is too nice to the students, lucky for them. The class is kinda easy, but a lot of reading, which you must do if you wanna do good in the class.

one of the worst teachers(disorganized, unclear lecturing), treated her class like a JR high class, it often seems that she spends no time in preparing a lecture, she takes roll everyday and marks each person as they comment in class(is this the sixth grade?), the absolute worst teacher ever
From an academic point of view this class was very disorganized with no clear point or goal. The class had no exams with a paper or 2 every once in a while. Class is a discussion everyday that always managed to get off topic. Otherwise easy class..if you need one.
the worst professor that I have ever experienced, she asks questions that do not make any sense at all, and she will just the students confused, only take her if you are willingly enougth to get a chalange...and did I say that she is not organized in her classes...?
This is definitely one of the best classes I've ever taken. She may not assign too many papers, but makes sure those papers are thought out and well written. Her class isn't all lecture like most classes, but instead designs it in a constructive way where
Very unorganized, makes the class sit in a circle to comment on the book. No real lectures or actual teaching. You must attend class. Readings everyday and papers due every week. Big class project on your family which was a waste of time. AVOID HER IF YOU WANT TO LEARN SOMETHING!!!
She is a very understandable Professor and she is very helpful towards her students. She makes everything easy eventough we have to many reading, she is very nice..
she is not that dab, she does give you alot of HW though but hey you are in college, just do the work, if you don't then you'll receive a bad grade like in anyother class...read the books and take notes, it will help you, she just wants to engage you in the class.
She was almost 10 min late every class period. But she had NO tests, quizzes, midterms or final.Big 10pg essay and short 4 pg essay and weekly summerys. I would take her again in a heart beat. Because she is easy and you learn about latin american history
No tests, no quizes, no final, but there are weekly summaries (they only have to be one page). She's really unorganized. Throughout the semester you don't know what summaries are due, but it doesn't matter b/c she accepts late work. There are 2 reports. 1 is 10pgs long and the other 4pgs. You have to try really hard to fail this class.
There is a lot of reading...two papers...weekly commentaries that aint that bad...go to office hours...turn in all the work and its an easy class if you follow everything she says. She is very nice, but can be unorganized. She really likes what she does though.
SHE IS A REALLY NICE TEACHER. THE GOOD THING ABOUT THE CLASS IS THERE IS NO MIDTERM OR FINAL JUST 2 PAPERS (WHICH SHE GRADES REALLY HARD). SHE MADE US SIT IN A CIRCLE AND TALK ABOUT THE READINGS THE WHOLE SEMESTER.SHE TAKES ATTENDANCE AND IT CAN COUNT AGAINST YOU! NEVER CANCELS CLASS.
Need to attend class. Long paper. Need to participate in class discussion. Cares about students.
A lot of reading. Prof. was overall nice and understanding. Attendance and weekly hw is a must. Easy class.
Attendance is a must! Class partipation is also a must! Lots of reading, but if you just do the reading, come to class and give your input, you'll do just fine. Effective professor! I learned a great deal in her class.
THis profesor was really great!!! i learned so much from this class! the readings are really interesting!!! she gives no test, quizes midterms or finals....just a 1 ten page paper and a 5 at teh end of the class. she is the best and she really cares n knows her stuff!!!!! GREAT PROF!!!!
She assigns a 10 page paper that she does not grade very easily. You must attend class. Not very helpful. If you aren't her favorite you aren't getting an a
Nice professor whom is eager to help out students with any questions. 10 page paper and 5 page paper are the only assignments graded. Heavy amount of reading, must participate in class, attendance is a must! All in all, a pretty good class.
Good class to take. Reminds me of high school since we sit in a circle but I do recommend the class if you can write a 10-page paper. She grades the paper a little tough so do yur best on it and youll be fine. I have all the books for this class so email me if interested to buy for a cheap price.
Basically if you are not of this background you won't be really accepted by this woman. She makes it very clear that she is there for "her people." Waste of time. She used class time for her mini preformances. Unrealistic expectations for research papers and doesn't stay within time limits of class. Cramming papers in the last week.
Crazy and unorganized. Often forgets things. She is nice however but you need to chase her down to get answers from her. If you like organization, don't take this class, it'll drive you crazy. 10 pg paper at the end, was ridiculous and gave no examples. I managed though but I wouldn't take her again.
She is very funny!!! If you do the reading, participate, attend class daily, and do the essays you will be fine! Don't be lazy...
Maria Elena is a wonderful professor. She has an interesting approach to lecturing the class by having us sit in a circle. She does give a somewhat hefty amount of homework, a 10 page research paper, & group presentation, but you'll learn a lot. Very nice and always willing to help you out. Take her when you get the opportunity. ^_^
EASIEST CLASS. ALOT OF WORK BUT EASY...10 PAGE PAPER ABOUT 1 OF UR FAMILY MIGRATION TO THE U.S., A GROUP PRESENTATION OF UR FAMILY BACKGROUND, AND A PAPER ABOUT HOW U PARTICIPATED IN HISTORY, AND ATTEND 3 EVENTS NEED A READER WHICH ALL THE READING WE DO ARE INTERESTING AND HAVE CLASS DISCUSION. SIT IN A CIRCLE HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER!!
I Love Cha Cha. Shes Funny, cool and very Smart. She can be a little weird and jump off topic. But overall i love this class. Take Her!!! The only thing that sucks is the 10 page paper...
This professor is very nice. However, there is a lot of reading...like 40-50+ per week. Attendance is crucial. But, she's a fair grader, understanding and very artistic. So take her if you can... but keep up with the readings because YOU MUST participate in class. Overall, I liked her.
Fun class. Although a lot of reading, the topics were interesting. Must participate in class as your grade depends on it. The conversatiosn in class were fun and made the time really fly by. The professor genuinely enjoyed what she was teaching & you could tell. She really inspired me to look into the topics in more detail. Fun class, good teacher.
Well everyone is really accurate and its funny how her 245 class descriptions were pretty much like our 445 class! Lots of reading, 10pg paper, weekly summeries, a presentation, and outside events. I felt I was struggling to keep up but I got a B+. Do your best and you'll do well.
No textbooks, just readers. A lot of reading, but interesting topics. You'll do well if you read and participate in class. She is a little unorganized but she knows her stuff and teaches with enthusiasm. I took this course not thinking I would enjoy it, but it turns out to be one of my favorite classes so far.
Great Prof, she didn't make us get books, we had to print a lot of the readings. Very interesting material. The course is very helpful personally. Great prof you should take it. Just be there and do the work and you'll be fine.
She is an amazing professor, very clear and helpful. I recomend her to everyone.
Her class is an easy A, just do her reflection papers and participate as much as you can. Don?t have to buy books, most of reading is online or on library reserve. There are NO TEST AT ALL!! All you need to do is do her 10pg. paper which is super easy (she provides a detailed guide line of what she wants). Attendance is not necessarily mandatory; h
Worst instructor I've had in CSUN. She doesn't teach you anything. You waste your whole semester writing a useless family history paper. She is not a fair grader .Only if she likes u, you'll get an A. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
Fairly easy. No test. Just a 10page paper about your family history. You watch a lot of documentaries. Get on her good side and everything will be great.
she is an extremely nice lady. shes very understanding as well. kind of unorganized and you hardly ever get your papers back. but no tests and no textbook. she gives readings and then you discuss them in class. just participate and you should be fine. and the 10 page paper isnt too bad. you do a bit at a time.
Great Professor. She is very understanding. The class discussions are fun. Easy class too.
Hated this class, very boring, was a complete waste of time and the class time was used on discussions about the reading for homework which was also long and boring.... do not take this class if you have no interest of this subject and are only taking it for a GE requirement.
She is an amazing professor. No tests no final and no book. Just do the online readings and participate in class and you should be fine. 10 page final paper but you do it piece by piece. I definitely recommend her.
A nice, laidback lady. It's more like a high school class than a college class because of the student composition. Reasonable reading and writing assignments plus one family history paper. A very enjoyable experience.
This class is so boring! I hated it! You just read passages, and the next day in class you discuss them. The passages are long, and boring. Plus you have to do a famiy history paper, a group presentation, and attend 3 events outside of class. Easy class though.
Her class is SUPER easy! There's a lot of reading, but not so much writing. For about the first three months in class you spend the time discussing the readings (if you don't participate, she WILL pick on you). She's not very helpful when it comes to grading your work because she does it all at the end of the semester.. Oh, there's NO FINAL! :-D
she is an easy A she gives you thousands of online readings that you do online and answer questions for. i only did 6 of them and got a b+ she only cares about the final paper/presentation do good on that and make sure she knows you and ur good..no final no text book required.. enroll on time because the class will be packed on the first day
She's the best professor I have hasd at CSUN. Very knowledgeable, sharp, and committed. I learned so much from her. I recommend this class without question.
This class is boring but very easy. Class time is pretty useless since she just discusses the answers to the homework. Readings are boring. If you want an easy A and don't mind being bored or reading long chapters online, then take this class.
The class is easy. No book only online reading, usually one every week sometimes two, class time is mostly just discussion on them. Also have to go to 3 events do a family history report and group presentation. It can be interesting at times. Oh and she never replies to emails!!!
Great teacher! There's no book but all the assignments are online. Seemed like a killer at first but you get used to it and you go over it in class. In class that's pretty much all you do. She has a talent of making you feel comfortable in the class which helps you learn! No tests AT ALL just a paper & weekly assignments. SHES AWESOME!
This professor was very chill. I thought it would be difficult but it wasn't. There is no tests or quizzes. there is a lot of writing of your own opinion online. There is no book so you don't have to waste money. You do have to attend to class she takes roll. If you participate and do all your assignments you should be good.
one of the best teachers you could ever take! her class is super easy it's ridiculous if you dont pass. no tests, no text book. only online readings to discuss in class. & an 8 pg. paper that she helps you with throughout the semester. easy A!
She is a great professor...just make sure you attend all the classes and do all the reading for weekly short summaries and review in class. There is just one big assignment at the end of the semester which is a 10pg paper. She helps you a lot with it though. RECOMMEND!
Very humble and outgoing person. Attend her class and do the readings she assigns. Class is based on readings and discussions. If you dont mind talking, then youll get an A. 10 pg paper due at the end of semester, but shell work with you through the whole semester. easy class. Recommend taking her,
If you want an awesome teacher take prof. Fernandez. All you have to do is go to class, do the assigned reading (which are a few pages long) and attend event which are actually interesting. Theirs one final assignment which is a report on your family, but no final exam. Oh and participate in class, she appreciates it. Definitely recommend!
She is a great person. Sometimes she can be unclear with what she is looking for. But ask questions. She appreciates it if you don't understand. Just show up and do the readings. Make sure you write a guy reaction to everything!
Very easy. No book needed. Class is mostly on readings she posts online. Interesting material. Family paper that she makes you do step by step so at the end you have everything and just put it together. Group presentation. And attend a few events. VERY EASY and interesting.
Great Professor! Very easy, you just need to complete noodle posts and attend class. You'll learn alot and the final is a paper which you do throughout the semester. Highly recommend her:)
I loved her as my professor. She is very knowledgeable about her work and can help as well. There is a lot of readings to do but she gives you a week. Also she explains everything throughly. People who comment bad about her are just lazy about the work. There is also a 10 page paper and a group project and mandatory events.
she is a great prof. awesome personality and passionate about what she teaches. a lot of reading but gives a week to do it. 3 short essays, attend 3 events and a group project. take her!
This course focuses primarily on the Chicano Movement. Prof Fernandez also invites special guests to class throughout the semester. The class consists of reading assignments, 10 page research paper, and a group project based on the research. Overall, the class is okay. There is no need to take notes since class lectures are based on discussions.
She is really into the work she does but very complicated. She doesn't come prepared to class she has too think for a while to figure out what the class is going to be about. You absolutely have to participate in the class and if you don't you will definitely definitely be called on. Overall an easy passing grade just a lot of readingwork.
Prof. Fernandez is very nice & sweet, her class is super easy. Assigns readings with questions you have to answer on moodle & they are due on the days you meet. Class consists of discussing the readings she assigns. Really wants you to participate, she'll call on you if you never raise your hand. 10-15 pg paper no tests. Bit disorganized in class.
Very sweet and genuine woman. Very passionate and understands what students need in order to succeed in her class. Would make corny jokes once and a while and very easy to talk to. As long as you do the assignments on Moodle, you will get at least a B+.
I would not take her for any course again.
So I saw all the ratings and expected to have an easy A class, yet it wasn't. Yea, no exams, no final. However, be prepared to read 13 to 18 pages, have a summary on Moodle before every class, and to do a 10 pages essay! So If your major requires to focus on major classes, like mine, then this class is not for you. This class is TIME CONSUMING.
This class is very very time consuming. She expects wY too much out of a 200 level course!!!!! Assignments each week, research paper, must attend 3 events and write a summary off each one, attendance is mandatory and pointless lectures. Assignments each week consist of 20-30 mins of reading and atleast 500 word assignments.
Prof. Fernandez is a little messy, but a very good teacher. You will actually learn a lot from this class and gain culture, but get ready to read and write gut reactions to the readings and do a paper that she will guide you through with a presentation. Put in the effort and follow instructions and you will get an A. Would take again!
Unfulfilling. And she wants EVERYONE to talk, even if they're are saying the most meaningless stuff. It's extremely annoying and actually very awkward. The cringe was strong at times. Didn't get the grade I wanted cuz I was lazy and didn't write the million and one short answers a week. Kinda mad about that cuz the class is really easy.
Loved this class. Other complain about there being too much reading/assignments, but it's a history class. Participation is necessary, because she does not lecture. If you do the reading you will do just fine. There is an assignment due before each class, but easy just to show that you did the reading. Take her if you actually interested.
Do not enroll into the class if you plan on taking it as another GE class. Too much work and reading.
She evens herself out because she gives no tests, no quizzes, and no finals but makes you work in a repetitive family history paper that has nothing to do with the class and i think she just wants to be nosy about her students parents' lives. So many assignments, so much reading for a 200 level class, I felt like i was in a 400 level class.
She is seriously so funny. Makes the class super enjoyable and also isn't afraid to call people out. Very politically correct and will make sure her students know that. Overall super fun and interesting, you will learn a LOT. A bit unorganized from time to time but the assignments are easy so it's not detrimental. You will watch a lot of movies!!
Professor Fernandez is one of the best professors I've had. Her lectures are very interesting. There is weekly homework, but it's really easy. There is also a paper, but it is done by section, so it doesn't feel like a lot. I would recommend taking her for any class. She's amazing!
Professor Fernandez does care about what she's teaching but her assignment questions really suck the life out of me. The same repetitive questions aren't conversational at all and don't really help me understand the content any better. The project she assigned was constantly postponed and unorganized. The whole class was a mess and i regret taking.
all you do is write and write with most of the class sitting in a circle having a discussion about the reading. She always comes late and spends most of the class discussion talking about our feelings towards the readings. Alot of useless writing but honestly its an easy A if you just read and write.
She provides a platform where students can express themselves relating any political issue or topic of discussion. While the readings were a bit long, I enjoyed engaging in every discussion. Make sure to participate! I took this class as an elective and I can't express how much I learned. I definitely recommend this class
I absolutely love this professor. She genuinely cares for her students. She talks about things outside of class that may affect you like stress, current events etc. Her final project is interesting. She's not a tough grader but you will have to show her that you are actually putting in effort. Love her!
One of the nicest professors on campus! Weekly HW is usual amount, research paper & power point presentation, & participation. Caring teacher who discusses current events a lot & the well being of her students come first. Participate in class and you'll be fine, she does take attendance. Overall I learned a lot in her class and would do it again.
As a Lantinx teacher, she wants the best for her latinx students and likes to encourage them to speak up during class discussions. This will go as far as acknowledging her white students but wanting to hear from her latinx students first, so white students are often left to speak last and are often disregarded. whities beware.
Worst professor ever, literally.
Gives way too much work for a lower division class and we have group discussions every class, and ALWAYS picks on the quiet students rather than those students who are eager talk which is really annoying. The readings are way too long and gives a 9 page family history paper. Overall, you can see she truly cares abt the topics, but never again her.
Fernandez is a really caring professor. She really cares about her students and if you have a problem with submitting an assignment shell totally hear you out. Its a hybrid class but she gave a lot of homework. Its a lot of reading but its pretty interesting. The only complaint I have is how many assignments she had every week due
She expects way too much for a beginning class and acts like every single class is sooooo important to attend when she literally just lectures about the exact same thing every single week.
Will make you participate. Assigns a lot of weekly assignments. Knows what she teaches, but gets very political even though it is not related to the class, which can the class uncomfortable at times. It's an art class, politics should not be discussed.
In her class you are given lots of homework, but it is very easy to do, as long as you are okay with that you should take this class. You have class discussions but honestly if you give input once in a while you should be fine, but if no one in class is participating she does choose on students. Overall very easy class, and I recommend!
I hated taking her class and shes a terrible professor. She does seem passionate about the course but shes bad at teaching and even worse at grading. You wont know your grade until the end of the semester. Her discussions are repetitive and she gives out too much work for a freshman class. She also has a tendency to interrupt students.
I can honestly say she's the worst professor I've ever taken. Horrible grader and horrible teacher. She'll interrupt you CONSTANTLY during "gut reactions." Will give you directions on her research essay and will grade you UNEXPLICABLY wrong. Save yourself the stress and take another class/professor. This professor will make you crazy.
Weekly assignments with weekly readings and sometimes weekly hour long screenings! If you have a busy life or work DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Does not like others opinions if they contract her own and will make you feel bad for them. She does give until end of semester to catch up on work but its so much by that time- youre overwhelmed!
Group projects during a pandemic. Weekly assignments during a pandemic that took hours to read/watch/write. Just gut reactions no in depth analysis of the work. If you are fine with lots of work and just saying yes to whatever she believes in... take this class. Id you want to truly study Chicano studies ... dont take it.
If you can avoid this class please do so! She gives out too much work, be prepared to read/watch/write a lot. She does not understand that we are in a pandemic! Times are stressful ad she still be giving loads of work. Grade also goes down if you are absent for more than a day. She takes forever to respond to emails. 10/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND! AVOID!
Wonderful Professor. So passionate about teaching and very respected. This class made me grow as a person and a student. One of the most caring and devoted instructors I have ever met. Listen and you will learn lots. Plenty of assignments but they're not usually lengthy. Best of luck :) you won't regret.
Yo I'm sorry but she was a nightmare. Gave 3-5 assignments per week, makes attendance mandatory, a 6 page essay and a group presentation all during a PANDEMIC! Also gave us a "final photo essay" despite the syllabus stating there was no final. Assigned homework late and expected us to do it by the due date. Avoid at all costs!!!
I can tell she is passionate about the class, but the workload is just too much. The lectures started to sound repetitive. She also takes a long time to grade assignments and she's very picky about what she wants in group projects and essays. If you have the time and patience.... go ahead.
She gives maybe 3-4 assignments a week, will give you a lot of time to finish stuff with not penalty, and is very caring. Her essays and group work are a little confusing, but manageable when you go to office hours. Everything complained about her is false, since everything was on the syllabus. This professor is extremely lenient and considerate.
Look, nice lady but it's just chaotic. Assigns way too much homework (during a pandemic) that always asks about your reaction to things and is very picky about how you do assignments. Attendance is mandatory and will make you participate during class in order to get higher than a 95%. Also made us do a combo of things for our "final."
Lots of reading with questions to answer for each. Occasional in-class and canvas post discussions. One big research paper done in chunks over the course of the semester. She is an amazing professor, really cares for the health and wellness of her students and accepting of her student's circumstances, especially amid the pandemic. I learned a lot.
I loved her. Her CH S 245 class was very clear for her guidelines. She does not really like exams, she wants to make sure her students understand and learn the material. I loved her optimism each morning she walked in. A lot of reading and weekly homework, but as long as you complete homework and few assignments you'll be fine. She is understanding
Lots of reading/writing/papers, but the information I learned in class was valuable. I learned so much about North/Central/South American history as well as the islands. She also covered much about Black history and Civil Rights (I enjoyed that as a Black student). It's hard to keep up with the work, but the lectures are easy to follow.
Took CH S 346. GET READY TO GET 2 OR MORE ASSIGNMENTS PER WEEK! Lots of reading and watching videos. Research paper essay of 6 pages but for every class you will have to talk about the homework as a whole class. Not an easy class so just a heads up.
The professor was decent, she had a couple of assignments due every week based on podcasts, videos, docs, and readings, and some took a lot of time. Then the class has a family paper which is easy and a research assignment which is broken up into parts so it's easy as well. It isn't bad if you can keep up with the assignments and participate.
just made an account to check my prof. for next semester, But writing this 1 for prof. fernandez to share with you, how she'a very lenient, respectable, understanding, & passionate professor. She really cares about the content and the students in it. That is if YOU GO TO HER and put the EFFORT in. utilize office hours. Not hard at all. real talk.
Very flexible and very mindful of the times you work and commuting, she's works a schedule with assignments so you're given enough to do them. Her responses are quite silly, sometimes it just like a "ok" "yea" and just blank stares you which i found silly lol. overall good.
A TON of homework in a span of short time, rarely taught in class just blabbed about i dont even know what, i tuned her out after a while. It was a waste of time, didnt learn anything but i needed the class for credit.
Super unorganized. Pushes her own political agenda on you and is always leaving you confused. Class is the biggest waste of time and, yet mandatory and makes up majority of your grade. Does not care about late assignments. All weekly assignments are credit no credit (does not tell you until end of semester). 1 final presentation with group.
I honestly don't even know what I learned in that class, she just rambles the entire time about her opinions. I only took this class bc of my major. Such a waste of time.
Professor Fernandez is a good instructor though she rambles a lot during lectures. The class involves multiple weekly assignments which typically require reading or watching long videos followed by answering a few questions. The material is easy but it can be time consuming. She accepts late work and doesn't grade until the end of the semester.
There are not tests, just a lot of homework each week. Lectures are boring and mandatory despite only a few actually being important to for your grade. Overall she is a very sweet person and the class is easy. She does not grade anything till the end of the semester.
Extremely unprofessional and tends to bring politics into class (which has no relation to class 99% of the time). Very biased and will pick favorites, be wary! I took the class thinking I would learn about the History of Americas, and ended up just being a participant of political discussions. I do not recommend this professor, AVOID HER!
I actually don't like this teacher. She assigns lot of work. One Tuesday and another on Thursday. Mind you only have her once a week. I hate the work that she gives us. Her instructions to the assignments never make sense. I always hope my tire blows out when I'm driving to school so I don't have to attend her class.
Not sure why Prof. Fernandez has low ratings. There is a heavy amount of coursework, but she is not strict on deadlines. If you need an additional day or days, she is more than understanding. Assignments are a quick reading or video with easy questions. I registered for a different course with her for next semester. She's great.
Not a bad teacher, but I wouldn't take her again. She's lenient and does potlucks(the food is so good if the class participates) group projects, but the homework load is heavy. If you participate and don't procrastinate, you'll be fine. She's caring, so reach out if you need help. I just wouldn't take her again due to the heavy workload.
She gives about 2 assignments a week, but it dies out about mid semester. Her assignments are not always clear. In person she can be a bit rude and sassy since she does expect you to be on top of your work and wants specific details when she asks questions. She calls you out in class so be aware of that. The final assignment isn't bad at all.
