challenges students, but is always extremely nice and helpful.
Wants students to do well, is very helpful but sometimes confusing
Very picky and condesending.
Couldn't find a better teacher to study Russian literature.
She is very nice and helpful, but a hard grader.
Maria, as she likes to be called, is a very nice person, but not the greatest teacher. She's an extremely hard grader. She knows the material, but will never provide concrete answers and never tell you if your opinions are wrong or right. It's confusing.
She is a veerrrry hard grader. She's clear about what she wants, but when you give it to her, she still marks it as wrong. The class is very confusing because she won't tell you what the stuff actually means.
Extremely tough grader, but encourages students to come to talk to her. I went and I wanted to cry (literally). She politely told me I had a terrible idea. She will never state her opinion, but rather tells us ours is wrong nonetheless.
Very unclear. Won't ever agree with any argument no matter which side is taken. Told me she'd change grade after I pointed out an error on her part but now refuses to do so.
I wouldn't recommend this, unless you've had prior teachings on the material. She expects you to carry the class with your insight (which she then dismisses in a consescending manner), rather than her teaching. She also is very unclear with what she wants
Absolutely my favorite professor. Knows and loves the material. Expects you to contribute your own insight rather than telling you what to think. Tough grader, but constructive criticism extremely helpful. Go see her for office hours; she's fun. =)
This class was truly enjoyable for me, except for the part where I wrote a paper for 10 hours (no exaggerration) and then got a C+ on it. I was mad. She could have been easier on us, and she shouldn't assume she's always right. A lot of times she wasn't.

Not a very good Teacher. She graded incredibly hard. I met with her twice and worked very hard on my final paper and did not score well. She is rather unclear and vague at times about what she wants. Also, does not listen to other ideas, but only hers
Had her for french-easy grader, not too much work, french is her 3rd lang tho(is that good/bad? dont know). Writing-hard grader, unclear, wants class to carry discussion, material had good potential but never made it, very helpful meets at ANY TIME
Maria is really nice, if you go to her and clarify your paper problems you should do better, expects participation but is not terrible about it, a little picky on proof-reading, very technical, a bit too analytical of texts, sometimes writes "NO"
Maria was the worst professor I have had here. I don't know how someone can teach an English writing class when she can't even speak the language herself. She embarassed students in class and was not at all helpful.
Maria is a genius, listen to her
Absolutely one of the worst teachers I have ever encountered in my entire life. She contradicts herself repeatedly, she's extremely harsh with her students, she refuses to merit improvement, she's utterly unfair when it comes to grading, and she takes pleasure in humiliating her students. HORRIBLE!!
In a word: morbid.
Maria was a good professor. She chose good material and facilitated consistently good discussions. She always supports a good thesis but is harsh if you stray from it. Overall I really enjoyed her class.
awful. simply awful. prepare to resent your parents for bringing you into this world.
wow, she was hard as heck. has favorites, like the russian kids in class. and...went to office hours (which is supposed to help) and still didn't do well . overall a very very friggin hard grader.
Maria is a wonderful teacher. She is so nice and helpful (she'll really help you improve you writing). Take her class if you like russian lit for sure.
Ok, I am sorry but do not believe any of the crap that people say about her being nice, she is not, she will tell you up from "you're wrong" about interpretation and NEVER gives out As, I know she said so herself, we always get the same grades no matter what and it's depressing!
i absolutely do not recommend this teacher, she is horrible. never gives out a's, your grade stays the same no matter how much work you put into your essays. WARNING ANAL **** ABOUT GRAMMAR
If you like giving 100% effort and receiving no compensation in return, this class is for you! Unless you're one of her favored Russian students in the class, don't expect to get an A. Actually no one gets an A. Good luck!
stay away, that's all that must be said...very hard grader, no matter how much effort is put into the paper you will probably get the same grade you got on the previous paper.
good teacher but very tough grader. seems like she is not satisfied with anything you write. will only point out bad points in papers. class discussions and books are interesting. not very helpful. seems like i will have the same grade on everything the whole year (has been true to this date).
Helped me out with my writing a lot! She definitely puts in the time out of class to help you and have conferences. Great literature and engaging discussions. Hard grader and hard to please but she pushes you to get the most out of you!
Really good professor. Take this class if you want to learn how to write well. Professor is very encouraging and will you lots of time and advice if you want help or just feel like talking about anything.
It makes me sick to read bad comments about her! She is such a sweetheart, very approachable, personable. Will push you and turn you into an excellent writer. First few grades are scary, though, but you learn so much.
Maria is a really sweet woman and has a lot of passion for the material that she teaches. Her grading is a bit harsh and it is difficult to improve your grades, but if you are interested in Russian lit, I would definitely recommend her thought-provoking classes.
Doesn't realize we aren't writing to win the Nobel Prize but just to pass her class, but still grades accordingly.
Dostoevsky himself could write a paper for this class and not get better than a C+.
i like her a lot. at first i thought that my grades would stay the same, but they've gotten a lot better as the semester goes on. she's really pushing me to the next level.
Hard as hell. But she is a wonderful person and an even more wonderful professor. Don't expect to get an A on your first... or second.. or third paper. But if you're willing, she will make you a better writer, even a great writer, maybe. She drills holes through her own schedule to cater to her students. You would be wise to seek her help. G'luck.
Very tough grader, STAY AWAY! very demanding, you will pretty much get the same grade on everything all semester long, usually nothing good. always points out the bad, never the good. grades as if we were professional writers
Maria is a very nice person, but she is a nasty teacher. She demands too much and you will never reep the results. Your grade will never improve! She will tell you that you are improving, but your grade will not reflect the change. SHe isn't clear with what she wants. She really is a terrible teacher. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Maria is a nice teacher, and will push u hard. But if you're looking to boost your GPA thrs no way thats gonna happen. Can be a bi*ch at time. wont give u any extentions.
If you like Russian Lit, take her class. If you like getting C's on ALL your papers, take this class. She is a nice person but terrible teacher. I did not improve in writing at all no matter how hard to tried. Well if i did improve my grades did not show it. I got the same grade on a final draft that i got on a first draft and I did make changes.
Maria will frustrate you to no end with her nit-pickiness and constant calls for revision, particularly in Russian Lit. Will assume the worst and she is usually RIGHT. Face it, this is what a college professor should be like. Will bend over backwards to help you improve and you WILL improve, even if her tough grading doesn't reflect it. Loved her.
Terrible teacher. You will not get a good grade. She is very confusing with comments. The only paper I got a good grade on was one that I spent 45 min on. She has no idea what she is doing. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
If you want to become a better writer, take her class. She is a very tough grader, but if you work hard, there will be visible improvement in your writing. Definitly enjoyed the class.
Very good teacher. She will punish you and poke as many holes as possible in your paper, but it is only to improve your writing - she will work with you out of class pretty much whenever and is very receptive to questions and help. You will definitely learn a lot if you take her class, even if the grades are a struggle.
She is so helpful and nice--and tall and pretty too. My writing improved a ton.
Helpful teacher. Writing skills will improve, but grades not necessarily. Difficult to please. Helpful during 1-on-1 time. Funny. VERY strict grader. Don't be late to class. Participate in class. A "C" isn't too difficult to achieve, but a "B" if you break your back, maybe. If you get an "A", you prob. shoudln't have been in WR100 to begin with.
This class made me love Russian Lit, but she was the most unfair professor ever. It felt as though she wasn't even reading my papers, and just consistently gave me the same grade (as I see previous posters noticed as well.) My final paper I was determined to improve my grade, even had two very intelligent friends proof my paper, but no improvement
Very difficult. Believes C is average and B is very good. She will work with you to improve your writing. Expect to work more than most other classes for a B.
By far the most unfair professor ever. She tells you your work is getting better but your grade is getting worse. She tells you to see her at her office hours, but that doesnt help, she just makes you talk the whole time, and you leave more confused then when you got there. my writing improved but my confidence is null. do NOT take this class!
She's passionate and extremely well-versed in her subject, she values new ideas from her students, and she takes plenty of time to help everyone understand the assignments. See her during office hours; she's tough, but her comments are extremely helpful.
She's mean and rude. Does not give great advice and makes you feel like garbage. Run away from her and throw the books at her if you can.
I would highly recommend not taking this professor if possible. She blows up at you if you are a minute late to class, has a bad teaching style, and is an incredibly hard grader. If you can get an A in this class, you should seriously think about writing professionally. Please do not take this class!
She's not the most friendly teacher you have have but she is really specific, meticulous about commnets, and always stays late to help us. If you can take the rough grading her class is definately worth it.
Take this class. Gapotchenko will help you improve your writing, and she's not rude, mean, or unprofessional if you're not rude, mean, or unprofessional. She's always available and always extremely helpful. An A is not impossible (I got one), you just have to be willing to work for it.
maria is probably the worst teacher on the face of the earth.. i seriously learned absolutely nothing and recieved a series of c's on the worthless papers that we were required to write.. mandatory attendence is just retarded as is her syllabus.. we had to give all kinds of useless presentations in front of our peers who obviously could care less.

Maria is a great professor. She'll kick your ass, but you have to appreciate the comments. She will improve your writing, she will make you think, she will help you as much as she can. One of the best professors I've ever had, and certainly the most influential on my writing.
An excellent professor. She's tough, but she's a teacher you can both like and respect, and in the end you'll want to do well for her. Your writing will definitely improve if you take her class.
Maria is one of the best professors I have had at BU. The class is very demanding but your writing will def. improve.
Maria does have some high expectations for her students, but she really does help, ESPECIALLY if you go to office hours. Maria credits you for your effort. Whether you hate writing or not, your writing will improve dramatically by the end of this course. I loved this class, and I would definitely take it again.
I'm not sure she knows that I take other classes that actually pertain to my major and that I'm shelling out obscene amounts of money to study them--not Russian literature. As far as she's concerned, her class should be my first priority, and maybe then she might consider giving me a B. She's nice enough but her expectations are ridiculous.
If you plan on taking this class, don't expect to get an A on anything. You can work really hard on an assignment and get a C or you can sort of try and still get a C. She tells the class how she sees progress, but as students we did not see that progress in our grades. However, if you want to learn a lot about writing this is the class for you.
I think she wants an award - I cannot come up with another reason why this professor would work so hard. She is obviously a good writer, so she has difficulty understanding why others find writing difficult. She is a tough grader.
If you aren't interested in Russian Literature do not take this class! She's friendly but grades really hard. She always talks about how easy it is, and in class the writing seems feasible, but once you leave you have no idea what's going on. She doesn't alot enough time for writing and piles on a lot of reading, makin it hard to write papers
Maria is great. She's passionate and devoted, and she makes it her responsibility that you improve your writing. Meetings with her are very beneficial, and she will always set aside time to help. I was not interested in this class at all in the beginning but now I can say that I'm glad I took it. If you're willing to do the work, take this class!
Maria is going to push you- but it will only help your writing. In writing each paper, she met with me outside of class whenever needed. Afterwards, she left clear, thoughtful comments on my analysis and style. The material is difficult reading, but her excitement for the text will rub off on you. Will prepare you for college writing.
Maria's class was the most confusing class I have ever taken. I only did well because I went to meet with her several times per paper. She rarely was clear on what she said, and even contradicted herself throughout the meeting. She seems very smart, but knows what she wants in essays and expects to see it. Take the other writing assignments serious
maria was one of the worst professors i have ever had. she knows exactly what she wants you to take from the readings, every time someone brought up a different point of view in class dicussions, shed shut it down. same thing with papers, youd get a bad grade if you deviate from what she expects. shes unclear and not very helpful.
Don't let comments on here psyche you out. I did, got a B+ on Paper 1, thought it was all downhill from there, and would have failed the course had it not been for her pretty understanding nature. It's not easy to get great grades from her but if you demonstrate interest, you will be pleasantly surprised. DO THE WORK and I promise you will be fine.
I was disappointed by this class. Maria's teaching style is rigid and militant, adjectives that also characterize her grading. However, she clearly works VERY hard. She regulated discussion way too much and occasionally freaked out on the class for no reason. Only helpful for people who don't know how to write. Save yourself the frustration.
Maria is a challenging professor. She regularly alters assignments and assigns a lot of preliminary work for each draft of every paper. She will grade you based on her own opinions about the text. She will email you several times a day, only to ignore your emails and questions. Highly recommend a different course.
She has harsh expectations of students, and assumes students memorize everything she says. Her teaching style is rigid, militant, and constrictive. She expects essays to cater to her style of grading (That being a skim of the essay, and grading based on her own impressions of the text). I find her class, as a writer, to be stifling.
Without a doubt, this was one of the hardest classes I have taken thus far, but I have gotten more out of it than from other classes. She will make you work extremely hard and has high expectations, but in the end it is effective. My writing is definitely better than before. All the hard work (and there's lots of work to be done) was worth it.
Maria was a hard professor and assigned quite a bit of work, but she was very understanding and really challenges you only to improve your writing. So even though it's not always enjoyable, if you're a serious writer, you will probably be thankful for her class.
Most reviewers seemed to find this class difficult. The only way this could be true is if one didnt like to turn in assignments. I found the class EASY, as she gave very clear instructions and objectively stated her expectations per assignment. She also responded to emails in < 2 hours. Overall, an excellent, hardworking and understanding teacher.
Maria was a great professor. Her class was intense but she really cares about helping you develop your writing skills. She will push you but you will DEFINITELY be a better writer for it! Even though it was exhausting I'm glad I took her class.
I found this class a problem. While I got a fair grade, I felt like she didn't really care about what I said and didn't know what went on in my essays past the introduction. She is really enthusiastic about the topic, but made me not so much.
Definitely a challenging class. Lots of short papers in between the usual 3 papers that all the WR100 classes have. But Maria was really helpful during office hours (she schedules some mandatory meetings throughout the semester). Readings were interesting. Overall I enjoyed the class, but it was stressful at times.
She is an EXCELLENT professor! If you are looking for an easy way out, do not take the class. If you do not know who Bulgakov is before, it will most likely be your favorite author by the end of the semester. I am Russian, so I really can compare how this book was taught to me before and I can really see that she really knows the subject.
Maria is too stick to her own opinions. She barely adopts or agrees on students' creative ideas. As a writing professor, she ought to give students more contributive suggestion regarding on how to revise the logic or improve the structure of the essay. She could be a more helpful professor.
She is a very intense teacher who doesn't care about her students or understand them in the slightest. She assigns too much work and grades them strictly. She is helpful but only if you are very hardworking. She will make fun of you in front of other students if your paper sucks. Overall, try avoiding this class if possible. Make your life easier.
She actually writes down the days you are absent. There is a bunch of reading and has conferences with you during essay times. The first conference is 30 minutes and the next one is 1 hour long. Unless you are very specific in what you need help with, she won't be much of a help. Do the reading, or essays will be tough to do. Sometimes calls on you
I don't know why I didn't check her on rate my professor before signing up for classes and it was kind of a mistake. She assigns a ton of work for her core section, in comparison to other sections, and monumentally more than any writing course. She is a really nice person if you talk to her, but in class she's really intense.
Maria is an awful professor who hardly ever makes any sort of concession on behalf of her students. Not only that, she seems to think her interpretation of a text is the only correct alternative, and she wont hesitate to publicly shut you down in class if you propose anything else. Do yourself a favor and avoid.
She is a wonderful professor. Yes she is tough and expects a lot! However, her passion for what she teaches, and the fact that she took core, really helps because she is enthusiastic. She can get overly enthusiastic, though. Really improved my writing.
Maria was really enthusiastic about our course, Visions of Justice. I had minimal interest going in, but she really let us explore anything we want so we could grow as writers. Lot's of students complain about her, but it's childish because she really assigns the minimum for homework and meets with you a lot so you can do well on papers.
Although her handouts can be confusing, Prof. Gapotchenko is always willing to work with you, even when you forget stuff at home and when you schedule the meeting last minute. Don't expect easiness though. For every assignment I worked till the last minute and went to writing tutors. The class is definitely enlightening-TAKE IT.
Maria is an incredibly sweet teacher, I would recommend taking her discussion class for CORE. She is sweet and encourages discussion and is really helpful. It's very useful to go see her and talk about the stuff you don't understand. She does grade harshly but she is also very helpful and her class is fun. If you work hard, you can do well!
Maria is the best writing/english teacher I have ever had. She has transformed my writing skills from the beginning of CC101 to now the end of CC102 (I had her twice in Core). While she is tough, she genuinely cares about all of her students and wants them to succeed. She will bring out your intellectual side in class. Use her help and office hours
Maria cares very much about her students succeeding but she is overly petty and strict. You absolutely cannot miss class and she she is probably the toughest grader I have ever had. She tries to help a lot with the paper's but never clearly explains what she wants, leaving most students with a bad grade.
Maria is one of the best writing teachers that I have ever had. I have seen a steady improvement in my work throughout the semester which is definitely due to her. Note, however, this is not an easy class by any means. It's primarily discussion based, and she will sometimes cold call you, and challenge your views if they are not founded.
If you haven't taken a good literature class you will basically cry/die through this. Avoid this professor if you value your life because she's going to give way too much work and doesn't care about the fact that you have your major to work for too. DON'T try to defy her opinions in class because she'll shut you down and tell you you're wrong.
This professor doesn't seem to realize that we have other classes to be responsible for. Granted, she wants us to write as well as possible, but this seems more appropriate for higher level writing courses. Her work takes more time to do than actual brainpower that I use for my actual classes (Engineering, science). Seriously the worst professor
Maria is one of the best writing professors I have ever had so far. She understands that Core books are hard and enthusiastically encourages our critical thinking skills during discussions. She is extremely helpful during office hours and is clear about what she expects from your paper.
She is for sure going to take apart your writing assignments, but that's a good thing. She recognizes improvement and for everything, she marks she gives excellent feedback and suggestion. Make sure you talk in class! Her insight is great and with such complex ideas the more voices in the conversation the better.
I graduated 8 years ago and still remember Professor Gapotchenko's excellent feedback and insights. She will make you a better writer. You need to be able to take the criticism on the chin and want to improve. She will work with you if you make the effort.
Professor G is an absolute gem of a professor. Her passion for teaching and the topic covered in our course inspired and motivated students. She truly cares about the success and well being of EACH and EVERY student. I had her during the COVID Pandemic and she was extremely understanding, kind, and helpful.
Prof Gapotchenko is simply the most dedicated and supportive teacher I've ever had. She will make you a better writer, and the workload is manageable, and the grading fair....
Professor Gapotchenko is a challenging professor but she really does cause a lot of improvement in your writing. She will cold call and challenge you in discussions but her feedback really helps and she cares a lot about improving the writing progress of the student.
Loved having her as a professor! She assigns a fair amount of work but if you do it well and submit on time, you will succeed. I had her during COVID and she was very understanding and lenient (gave extensions, etc). Cares a lot about her students' success and wants everyone to improve their writing.
Professor G. is an excellent teacher. Though she is a tough grader, she cares about improving your writing and will make you work for the grade. She is personable and caring, and her class was definitely one of my favorites. Be open to constructive criticism, and you will improve as a writer.
Professor G is awesome! It's obvious she loves what she is teaching and her passion is super contagious. The course is a lot of work, but she really wants her students to succeed and improve at writing. She was very understanding and flexible during the transition to remote learning. Taken Spring 2020.
After the first week, I developed an aversion towards the class: assigns a lot, had difficulty balancing. But, she is the one professor I will never forget. Her class definitely helped me grow in my writing. If you actually pay attention, take her advice, & apply her advice to ur writing, you will succeed not only in class, but in your writing too.
An absolutely amazing teacher. Her passion and care for what she is teaching and for her students is contagious. I took this class randomly and it left a mark on me. She is one of the teachers I will remember after leaving BU. Pretty tough but for good reason, she cares and wants you to care. Please take this class and take it with Professor G.
Very high work load but it is all worth it because Professor G gives amazing feedback and cares about the improvement of every single one of her students. The texts are super interesting and she encourages us to think outside of the box.
Professor G is obviously super knowledgable and genuinely wants her students' writing to get better. However, it must get better to her standards only. Be prepared to rewrite your essays multiple times. Long and theoretical reading assignments are common. But, she does really care and gets to know you as a person as well as a student.
She cares about the material and gives feedback, but she puts way too much pressure on students. Not worth the 20+ hours of work a week. So many papers, assignments, and readings. Get ready for her to not care about the other classes you have, or for your opinion general (her opinion = only correct interpretation). The only good thing was the TF.
The Professor is extremely aggressive and requires a lot of work. She prefaces her meetings by warning that you'll feel like you have to redo your entire paper for it to be an adequate revision. Many people say she makes you a better writer through her feedback but it can be excessive and nitpicky; you can receive good feedback elsewhere.
Don't take this professor. She is passive-aggressive in her discussions and likes to get to know students, but is invasive in her ways of going about it. She does not give everyone the credit they deserve even if they do all the required work. The amount of weekly work exceeds the 6-7 hour estimate. At one point she gave a 6-8 hour assignment.
Professor G. has ever-changing requirements for work. She likes participation but only when she prompts it. It is hard to satisfy this professor because she believes things should be done to a standard she has and frequently changes. Prepare for lots of follow-up emails outlining the many things expected of you from class to class.
DO NOT TAKE CLASS unless you don't want a social life and want to be in a class where the teacher thinks the world revolves around her class
The class was very difficult. She pushes you to completely immerse yourself with the material. However, this means that you always have to keep up with a significant amount of reading and homework. If you are eager to learn, she will always be there to help you. But keep in mind that if you take this course from her, you have to put in the work.
If you want your semester at BU to go smoothly with a few bumps STAY CLEAR FROM THIS PROFFESOR. She does not have a clear grading criteria will make you redo papers multiple times and will tell you it has not improved much from the pervious paper. If you do not meet her standards be prepared for lots of meetings and one on ones after class.
If you want to cry daily take this professor. She does not care about your other classes and thinks her class is the only class you are taking in the semester. She is inconsiderate. Yes, this is college and the rigor is visible, but she genuinely does not care about her students she cares that her work be done and that's all!!!!!
Be ready to not understand her grading criteria at all. Since my first class with her she is very rude and passive aggressive. On the first day of class I asked her a question and she rudely responded to me in a harsh tone. She expects you know to everything and if you dont she will judge you. Your opinion needs to correlate with her opinion.
so much work assigned, (esp for wr120). She often criticized the whole class for unprofessionalism (she showed up late to class multiple times) and lack of participation, even though there were limited opportunities. Essay feedback varied drastically from the rubrics, which were vague. She was very accessible, and always willing to give feedback.
As long as you keep up with the readings, make an effort to contribute in class, and follow the grading contract you will be fine. Her office hours are very helpful, and she genuinely wants to see you grow as a writer. She appreciates it when you demonstrate effort.
Professor G runs a challenging but rewarding class. The workload is heavy, but her detailed feedback helps you grow as a writer. Use Unstuckstudy and the free textbook to stay on top of things.
If you take this class, be ready for a teacher who has ever-changing requirements. One minute she says something, and then completely says something else. These pressures and aggressive mannerisms are NOT what a college student needs. Do not take this class. You will leave the semester with a headache and a half because of the workload and teacher.
She would not stop emailing me specific more things to do!
one of the worst professors in BU. Took it freshman year and I can confidently say this was the worst class I've ever taken. She's extremely biased and the class is structures horribly
She is so mean!
SO MEAN SHE IS RUDE
This professor assigns an amount of work well outside the boundaries of a normal hub writing class. For a 4 credit class like this, you should expect ~8 hours of work a week. She assigns far more than 8 hours of work. She is rude and makes it unattainable to get an A. She gives pop quizzes on readings and will cold call on you in class.
worst professor. so rude. so mean. a literal bully
