First of all, understanding her talk is very difficult. She does not know the material & so we have to figure it out ourselves. Her lectures are very quick so taking notes is nearly impossible (although she does put them on bb) She does offer help but will probably tell you something different than a student who just asked the same question :(
HORRIBLE THIS lady just plain out sucks loses papers, doesnt speak english at all.
NO English. What is she saying and how do B students fail her exam. I dont understand. What. speak english
If you speak fluent spanish, you might have a chance on passing this class. She is a horrible teacher, and the exam was way to hard. I think that this class would be interesting with a different professor, but its a struggle to understand this woman. So frustrating. I don't recommend her at all.
I have her as for a lab it is completly horrible... cant understand a word she says, i definatly wouldnt recommend her. I am an A-B student and im borderline failing... so we'll see how this works out
ummmmm, well its a little difficult to understand her sometimes, and she goes through material quick, but she is a nice teacher and she does know her stuff I think its just hard for her to put into words.
TURN BACK NOW. She's absolutely horrible. I was amazed that Central let a prof like this into our teaching system. My 2 year old cousin speaks better english than she does... seriously.
She is a good teacher and she really wants you to know the material. Lecture is quite boring, but if you ask her to post the slides she will and that is all you need to study. It's easy to get a good grade because you have in class exercises that she will give you answers to, quizzes, group quizzes, a project and 2 exams. Good!
Very hard to understand. Expects students to know an unreasonable amount of Geology. Way to difficult for 100 level!
She is very helpful when you ask her. Dont be afraid to have her repeat anything you cant understand
Maria will answer any question you have if you just ask. She can be difficult to understand, and lecture is boring, but if you do the work (which she goes over the answers in class) you will get a good grade.
she is kind of hard to understand her because of her accent, but if you read her powerpoints you will be fine
Very nice lady. She is ALWAYS willing to help. The class is a lot of work but that is because it is a lecture/lab. Grades very easy
She's a decent teacher. Don't listen to her lectures, just study off all the worksheets she passes out, her exams are just pieces of the worksheets. BUT: She loses student's papers and puts in wrong grades and changes her mind all the time. She's very scatterbrain. Don't depend on asking her for help, she just gets mad at you for not understanding.
Maria is a good Prof. She has an accent but she will help you if you ask for help. She works with you if you won't be in class but need to turn in an assignment. Aside from the accent she's a great Prof.
Maria is a fabulous teacher. She gives real-life examples of material to help you retain the information. Her lectures are based on her notes, but she adds extra during the class. Go to class and you'll do well!
Very easy grader. Exams were easy as well. Overall a pretty good professor.
Maria was a very good teacher because she went through the material very well and she always stopped to answer everyones questions. I don't know why everyone complains about her accent...I thought she was easy to understand. Class is based on 2 exams, quiz every week, group assignments, and a project. Overall a pretty easy class.
The material is actually really easy to understand, but the way Maria teaches it makes it extremely difficult. I took this class as a SR. because I was 3 science credits short of graduating.. and it was one of the hardest classes I've had at CMU. Maria is horrible at explaining things. Be prepared to teach yourself a lot of the material.
Don't buy the textbook...she puts all notes on Blackboard and everything on the notes are on the test! As far as the class...I was content with a B- and didn't spend a lot of time studying except before tests.
I really did not like her class end of story.
Awful teacher. DO NOT take this class with her. She takes a million miles a minute, and most of the time the class has no idea what is going on. The groundwater report was the hardest college assignment i've ever had, and she does a horrible job explaining it. The assistant taught me more then she ever did. This class was an awful experience.
Beyond her Spanish dialect that is really hard to get used to, she is a pretty good teacher. You even take a field trip
I just took her class as a 3 week summer class and I enjoyed the class and her as a teacher. She does have an accent but its not hard to understand. All notes are online and everything on the quizzes/exams are from the notes and lectures. The groundwater report is easy if you pay attention, go to class, and read the direction. Great teacher :D
She is very helpful, and she gives students the notes of the material. The activities in class are very helpful in learning the material.
Maria is a great professor. She is very nice and gives you all that you need in the notes. Attendance is not mandatory but she gives out quizzes every week and they are a breeze. Only two exams and one paper. Very helpful and willing to explain anything you need. I'm looking at an A in the class if that helps any.
Maria is great! I would def recommend taking this class because the lab is during the class. She is super funny, nice and helpful. Easy class and fun labs.
Maria is super nice and she wants her students to understand the material. She is very helpful if you have any questions. However, it you have had any previous knowledge of earth science you will be incredably bored because she goes so slow. Take this class if you want an easy A.
Maria has a lot of passion for geology. Unfortunately, she flies through the powerpoint slides so you will not have any notes after the first week. Buy the book, do the study guides and you'll ace the class. Even if you don't care, you'll still get a B.
Might want to find an easier UP. Don't buy the text book you will be fine w/o it. Idk y everyone says shes hard to understand. Yea she is from Mexico and has an accecient but shes not hard to understand grow up. Lots & lots of busy work, DO NOT SKIP CLASS! She is funny, and helpful just pretty unorganized especially her office my gosh!
Don't buy the txt book. IDK y everyone says she's hard to understand ya she has an accent but you need to grow up she is good at speaking english. DO NOT SKIP CLASS! lots of busy work in class, due in class. Her quizzes are really easy 1 project which is easy just keep up with it, study guides for her 2 exams, just don't skip!
Eh if your not into rocks, streams, and glaciers I would probably take another class. You can never miss because you'll fall extremely behind, she is very hard to understand ( and her directions are how she speaks), theres a lot of work. Plus its super boring. If I could go back I never would have take it.
Boring. Boring. Nice lady, doesnt help at all if you ask, it seriously takes her months to grade****.
Maria is from south america and her accent is very hard to understand. She is terrible at giving directions and making things clear. She screwed me over in a ten point homework assignment and a quiz that I missed because of a funeral. She is very unreasonable and only makes exceptions to students she favors. This class sucks.
Maria is an absolutely lovely woman. She is one of my favorite professors at school and she is hilarious! People say they can't understand her because they don't pay attention. Maria is not hard to understand and has a great sense of humor. Don't skip her class because you'll miss the EXTREMELY EASY quizzes and lose out on those points. READ!
Professor Gonzalez is a very friendly and funny teacher. Her accent is not hard to understand. However, her pitch often stays at the same level during her lectures, so if you're not paying attention, it's very easy to zone out. She also talks incredibly fast, but she puts the powerpoints on Blackboard.
She's a pretty easy teacher and her accent is not bad at all! All the work is group work so its easy
Nice lady and can be funny; not a bad class to take
She is one of my favorite professors at CMU. I found her extremely helpful and always willing to work with students. The class itself is not "easy" but it took nothing more than me reviewing lecture slides and completing labs to get a B+. She genuinely wants her students to do well and as long as you put in some effort, you'll do just fine.
Maria is a good professor and she is pretty funny. Her accent isn't hard to understand and sometimes she talks fast but , she knows what she is teaching. You can't miss a class or you will miss a lot of info and an easy quiz grade. Maria is always willing to help if you need it and will explain things if you need it. just pay attention.
Class material is disgustingly boring. I took GEL 130 for the lab requirement. She makes the class easy as can be by basically giving you the answers to the quiz's prior to the quiz on quiz day. Another class that's tough to fail, but the material is so boring it makes it hard to put the effort in.
great teacher! really takes the time to make sure you understand what she is talking about
She is very unorganized, and jumps from topic to topic. DO NOT buy the textbook, but make sure to buy the lab manual. She was nice and would answer any questions, but her assignments all worth like 3 points so if you got any little thing wrong it messed with your grade. Also, weekly quizzes
Dr. Gonzalez is a really sweet professor but her explanations can be confusing at times so make sure to ask questions frequently. As long as you study the material and put in effort, it is relatively easy to get an A.
She's a great professor. Sometimes she can be unclear of the material during lecture because she can't speed through it at times but I really liked her teaching. First half of class was lecture then we normally had a group lab assignment. Quizzes are also taken in groups so that was a plus as well!
This class is all group work. As long as you pay attention do the work during class you should be okay. She doesn't take attendance but you should still go to get participation points. There is homework online but it's not bad.
Such a nice lady! The class is boring, which isn't her fault. Who wants to talk about rocks all day? She's a great teacher and person though!
Assigned a long paper that took her months to grade. She is nice but I would sometimes wonder if she was not understanding my question. I have asked her questions and gotten an answer to a totally different question that I didn't ask. That was my biggest frustration with this class, I was very confused. Group labs every day, attend for the points
I was a little unsure before coming ino this class because she only had an ok review. She is a great professor and you will do well just come to every class because ou take a quiz lab that counts for points everyday. They're easy points and she is always willing to help if you have questions. And her accent is NOT that bad.
She is an awesome teacher. I had no problem participating in the labs and completing the homework. If you do the homework and participate in the class you should get a good grade.
If you are not interested in learning about rocks and rock processes, be prepared to have a tough time paying attention in class. Other than that, the class is pretty easy but you must be in class everyday in order to pass! The class consists of in-class assignments, homework, and weekly quizzes,3 exams, and a lab report.
Overall this is a good class and its not hard to get a good grade if you just show up. Sometimes it is hard to understand what she is asking for on an assignment. Just show up and do the homework and it is a pretty good course. She did NOT take attendance but there are quizzes that if you miss they impact your grade. She tells you when they are.
Nice lady, however I feel she rushes through material without really waiting to see if anyone needs help. She tries to explain, but it is hard to understand, and it's not because of her accent, its just difficult to follow her logic. If you ask though, she will help you. Overall this class isn't too difficult if you do your homework and study.
I really struggled with her class and I haven't missed a single day in there. She can be very rude to students who ask for help or don't understand the material right away. She also flies through notes so good luck taking them. I took this class as a UP course to get my lab in trust me take Biology instead if you can.
I had her for GEL130QR, the class is not difficult but you definitely need to show up to pass. There are weekly quizzes and reading guides. The tests are fairly easy. The lab is included in class period. Overall, I think she is a good professor but can be confusing at times.
Maria is a very nice and helpful teacher. she is very flexible and will always work with you. The class itself can be a little long and boring but all in all it's very easy. just listen to lectures and you won't have any problems. You are assigned to groups that you're in all semester and almost everything is done through group work.
Very nice lady, she loves rocks. Willing to help as long as you show effort.
Weekly reading guides and quizzes every class period. Also a lab every class. She flies through material and throws the labs at you without much explanation. Helpful if you ask but she is all over the place even though she is very knowledgeable. The labs are stressful and make sure you pick a solid group.
Honestly worst professor I have ever had at cmu, she is so disrespectful and expects that her studies already know everything about geology. She has no compassion to students what so ever, there is weekly homework, reading guides, 2 quizzes each week. She also takes points off for no reason. Beware to teach yourself geology if you take this class.
Maria was a good professor. She knows her material and is overall a nice person with a decent teaching style. She does have an accent that you have to get used to. There's a lot of group work and quizzes. Not a tough class by any means though.
She acts as if all her students know as much as about Geology as she does. She speaks very broken English and is extremely difficult to understand. Her PowerPoint lectures are extremely fast and riddled with spelling errors. Every class either has a lab or quiz. She does not provide clear instructions on almost all her assignments.
She's a very interesting professor. You're assigned groups and you're in those groups for the whole semester, and you do every assignment in your groups. Very broken english, so sometimes she's difficult to understand. Only thing I struggled with were the exams, so be prepared to study.
Her exams are NOT that bad. More than 75% of the exams are the EXACT same activities you did in class. If you were in class and you look over the assignments and quizzes in class, you should pass. She DOES care about her students. You do however to go to her office hours for her to really get to know you. Must put in effort. Came in knowing none.
Her accent really is not bad! She is beyond kind and is willing to go the extra mile for any student. There is a lot of lecture and work but she is flexible and will help you! She loves the subject and knows so much about all branches of geology. Easily a top prof at CMU.
Maria is super nice and is willing to help if you are willing to work for it. Not an easy A, but tests are based off of assignments done in class. Her english is a little rough but is definitely not bad enough to be confusing. Show up to class and you will be just fine.
Everything in this class centers around your group so try to sit next to people that look smart. Homework quizzes, and exams are all easy as long as you read or pay attention in class. Show up every day because a "lab" is given every day and those points add up. Maria's english isn't bad, but she does have a heavy accent.
This class was pretty easy and enjoyable for the first half of the semester, but then she randomly changed the whole format of the class. You do a lab basically every day and they often seem tedious and pointless, especially in the second part of the semester. She is picky when grading too, and gives quizzes once a week.
She's not the worst professor I've had, but personally would never ever take another of her classes. She is kind of a sweet lady though. At first I thought I was confused because of her accent, but once I got used to the way she talked I realized her note structure and way of explaining was just really terrible.
Your exams are about 50% of your grade in the class and the exams cover a lot of material. Maria is nice, but for a 100 level gen-ed, this is unnecessarily complicated. Everything you do in class is group work labs, papers, presentations) and it is incredibly annoying. Weekly homework and quizzes over textbook material.
homework online due at Sunday nights, kinda a lot sometimes but if your lab group is willing to help the class is not bad
This class was tough only because of Dr. Gonzalez as a professor. If you asked a question she would make you feel dumb and yell it out to the whole class. Also, you have a lab everyday and a quiz every week. Overall, the class itself wasn't bad, but don't take it with her.
Where to begin... for a 100 level class this is way too much. I have done more work in this class than any of my other classes I have had at central. Everyday is a Multi page packet that must be filled out for your group. A quiz every other class. Exams arent terrible but Lectures are long and painful. The field trip was awesome and Maria is cool.
She's a nice lady. She's pretty understanding when stuff comes up. There isn't much hw, just 2-3 things in the book per week, quick and easy. In class is where it gets work heavy. There is a lot of kinda pointless in class work. She tends to rush you through it tho. Everything's in groups. Less hw is worth the amount of classwork. Posts notes too.
Maria is a great professor and she really cares about her students. Her class is kind of hard at times and bland given the fact its about geology. Other than that she makes it a lot more enjoyable and she trys her best to help her students. She does care about everyone and wants you to go to class and succeed.
This is my first semester at CMU and she made the whole time bearable. She's is overall an amazing person and really cares about how you do. Very funny. Attending class is not required but you will not do well if you don't go. There are labs every class and those make up a large part of your grade.
Maria is one of the nicest professors I've had. My class was Hyflex, but I would strongly recommend showing up in person because there is a lab almost every day. You can do the labs online, but you won't get the same experience. There is a Smartbook assignment and quiz every week, and the labs aren't too difficult.
I love Maria. She cracks so many little jokes and is such a caring lady. She is easy going, and works well with students. Classes were lecture and lab heavy but never extremely difficult. Would reccomend taking this class
She was a very nice lady who means well, and the class itself was not hard however there was a lot of busy work (labs) and quizzes that made it stressful at times. Would take again however
Maria is one of the coolest professors on Central's campus. She is so willing to go above and beyond for her students. She is also one of the funniest professors I've ever had. While it is a lot of busy work, she always takes her time to help anyone who is struggling. She is awesome and the reason I switched to a geology major.
This class is lecture for the first half & a lab for the second half which is a worksheet that you work on with a couple of other people. Most of the time she does go over the answers, but if she doesn't you may have no idea what the right answer is. A couple of hours of online homework per week, but all the answers are on Quizlet. STUDY FOR EXAMS.
Dr. Gonzalez is a well meaning person, but just not the best teacher. The class is based heavily on labs and online homework, so if you don't keep up with in class labs you won't pass. Her instructions are often unclear and she goes way too fast through the material in class. However, she is usually willing to meet during office hours to help you.
Maria is literally the coolest professor on campus. She is so funny and can make any lecture bearable. She is very understanding and overall the class was pretty easy and fun to learn about.
I took this class to get my one science credit out of the way. It is not extremely difficult- but you WILL struggle if you miss class. It is heavy on participation & we work in groups every day. The material is really confusing- especially if you don't know much about sciences. She is impossible to reach outside of class and is not understanding.
She is a good prof and is very lab heavy. She put you into groups in the beginning of the semester and your stuck till the end. If you go to class and complete the labs you'll be fine.
She is super nice, funny, and passionate about geology. Class was 1hr lecture, 1hr lab with labs/group work as a big part of your grade. Sometimes the assignments were confusing but she was there to help. Like most classes, there were weekly readings & online assignments. Overall not a bad class, she made geology pretty interesting.
took this for a gen ed so I'm not into Geology, but she made it enjoyable. Labs were generally fun, just a worksheet, some googling or looking from the textbook. Go to class, labs are a fair amount of your grade. Homework is easy, just do it, or do it with a study group together, it's definitely easier that way. Lecture heavy class, lecture + lab.
Class is middling. She does not teach the lectures in an engaging manner, and the homework is tedious and does not encourage actually learning the material. The labs on the other hand are very fun most of the time, and typically actually teach the material learned that class. I wouldn't take it again, but its a decent course if you have to take it.
She is very nice lady and wants you to do well but she seems to think everyone already knows and loves rocks. The sides are very long and confusing. She also calls you out on presentations if you are reading off the slides or talking quietly. Also she tells you very little in advance when a quiz is so you can't really prepare.
Horrible to students. My mom got cancer, grandma died, & I had an emergency surgery causing me to miss 3 entire weeks. She refused to answer any emails & I couldn't visit office hours due to recovery. I had to reach out to the GEL head which made Dr. G yell at me in front of the class. Refuses to help, lectures are boring but class is easy to pass.
Do not take this class unless you have to. She is a nice lady but not great at teaching and makes the learning experience difficult. Not an easy UP Credit.
I like her, for a 130 level the class was decently hard. There were weekly quizzes and homeworks and only 2 exams. She is a very sweet lady and will always help. Half the time was lecture the other half was an in class lab.
Dr. Gonzalez is funny and kind but god the lectures and labs were so boring. Labs are dense packets full of busy work that would take me longer than the class period to complete. I think the assignments were way too much for an 100 level class but she/her TA seem to be pretty easy graders, though I would at least make an effort.
She's kind, but the lectures are pretty boring. Good class for if you need a general science credit or something for your UP's. Attendance HEAVILY matters; every class we would do a lab of some sort for a grade and they couldn't really be made up.
The class was not bad, however she would take up the entire hour fifty mostly reading off slides and then giving out lab packets that would end up being homework because they took longer than the class time we had left.
She is a great person and obviously cares a lot about her students, their success, and the subjects she teaches. If you show her respect, she will do the same to you. Her lectures/labs are sometimes long and boring, but I appreciated her passion for the topics. She does not usually remind you of due dates, so you need to be prepared and organized.
