Amazing! Very fair and helpful, esp if you see her during office hours
a really good course and she knows how to teach
No Comments
She actually teaches!!!
she's smart and pretty. not out to get you but actually wants you to do well. interesting material
great prof! very fair and respects students
very nice teacher. Has a nice voice too. Courses are challenging but fair
A very beautiful woman! She is kind, caring, and fun! She is humourous and very intelligent. She helps you in any way she can. Her tests are fair and her lectures are interesting.
Really good and helpful prof
Excellent
She is an excellent psychology teacher. Makes the class interesting with videos, excellent and relevant lectures.
She was a very good teacher but seemed to rush her lectures and gave the impression that she wanted to always get out earlier. I liked that there were many many opportunities to demonstrate your abilities and your work with journals, presentation, test..
Well she's not that beautiful, but she is smart and whitty. Gets the point across, but always in a rush. Test so far was fair, and enjoy her lectures. Looks better on her website when she was a blonde.
Maria provides stright forward material and is extremely helpful if you have extra needs. She also happens to be very attractive which can be very distracting - but in a good way!
Awesome prof. Acts like one of the students and still gets the point across effectively. Great personality and very intelligent. Doesn't hurt that she's gorgeous too!
Nice proff, really easy marker and easy tests. Although her lectures are sooo broing that it makes you want to kill yourself. You know she's pretty bad if she can make psychology of sex that boring.
Dr. Gurevich was an awesome teacher. I would love to take every course that she teaches. Incredibly intelligent prof!
I have to agree; Maria made this term very interesting and enlightening, despite the fact that there were many idiots in the class. She's smart, funny and willing to go out of her way to help. And kind of hot.
Great prof!! I loved her class. She makes everything interesting and she is fair. Such a nice lady. I recommend anyone to take her course
This was such an EASY course! She lectures straight off her powerpoint presentation. Uses videos the 2nd half of class. Rushes in lectures at times. Easy tests and easy assignments. I suggest you take this course if you want to up your GPA.
Terrible prof. Community Psychology is a very difficult course. Don't take it unless you want to make life complicated.
If you are going to take Human Sexuality, take the Cont Ed version (CPSY621) with Prof Oren Amitay. He gives 10% marks for poster assignment which is fun! (maria doesn't give poster asst) cpsy621 essay only worth 20%, but maria takes 30% for essay!
Good prof
One of the best psychology teachers I have had. She is a very fair marker on tests and essays and makes all lectures easy to understand. Classes usually go the full time, but at least its interesting!
Maria is a great proff. One of the best! She makes everything simple for you and wants to help. I would take all of her classes!
Awesome
THIS PROFESSOR IS NOT EASY. BE EXPECTED TO ATTEND ALL CLASSES> 40% of the midterm and final will come from information taught in class; and class notes are not posted on the net. She is a hard marker. If you want an easy class, this is not it.
She is most definitely better for Psychology of Human Sexuality than Oren Amitay (the guy who teaches the continuing education version of Human Sexuality)
Don't let these comments FOOL you..
Maria is one of the better profs. She is very very nice and helpful, understands students, and tries to make our lives easier. Just go to classes and take notes and read the text and you will be fine. The material is interesting and failry simple to understand. GOOD PROFESSOR!!
Was all right, but nothig spectacular. She knows her stuff and seems to have put a lot of effort in. Exams are fair for sure.
Maybe if she would stop ****ing about needing a TA she could spend more time explaining what all those movies were about and why we had to watch them
She brings in a good dynamic, and is a rock solid Prof. Very helpful a bit long winded, but covers the material. She has good days and bad ones too.
whatever you do DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. effectively killed any curiosity or interest i had in psy forever. what a horrible class. this prof seems tired and like she's on edge but surpressing it (or trying really hard to), like she doesnt want to be there. her intellectual bias' are frustrating. the only C i ever got at ryerson.
fantastic
You need to attend her class in order to get all the notes, lectures on stuff not in the text. But I found her tests easy and did well on the essay. Overall interested in and knowledgeable of the topic. I'd recommend her as a prof, I took stress & adaptation from her as well.
She's awesome, i cant imagine anybody having anything bad to say about her. She's very well read and knows her stuff forwards and backwards. Attend the lectures for sure, but you should enjoy her teaching style

The material is interesting and she is well prepared during her lectures. I just wished she divided the tests in 3 parts as there are too much material to cover in two tests.
great prof! knows her stuff. posts slides on blackboard, sample essays, and sample test questions. approachable. fair marker. fair tests. good experience.
Awsome Prof! Really helpful if you need it. OK Class, kinda boreing material. Easy exams, easy assignment. She posts ppt's from class online but only after class, so there is no need to go to class. Easy Upper Liberal. Non-cummulative final!
Lots of readings for the 3 tests (textbook for MCs + articles for short answers). For the most part MCs were fair. Pay attention to the %results of experiments when reading the textbook. Short answers are marked tough. Paper was straightforward. She gives sample essays and tests to help us study. Nice prof but takes a long time to return marks.
Tests were super hard.. atleast I thought so. Seemed like the questions on the test were out of the blue. She doesn't lecture from the txt, but you are tested on the material. Short answers are marked hard. Class material was interesting. If you plan on taking the course, do not slack off!
I do not recommend this class, the prerequisite does not prepare you for this class and the level at which it is taught. The tests had some strange questions and the written answers on them are hard. If you're interested in sex-psy maybe take it in the summer as it may be taught by a different prof... otherwise stay way!
wish I had her for more of my classes - not only did I actually learn something but I also found her to be a very kind and compassionate person.
absolutely HATE this prof. she is ridiculous and extremely unfair. her multiple choice questions are literally out of the blue. It seriously had nothing related to the answer unless you critically think and analyze every tiny detail to get a stupid answer. 75% of of the test was based on 3 slides. wtf? can't stress how much i hate her. DO NOT TAKE!
Lectures seemed to drag on. Discussions were pointless most of the time. Never posts slides before class and used a lot of abbreviations which were annoying to study for. Multiple choice questions seem like a toss-up in terms of how well you do. She reveals short answers ahead of time but still difficult to get full marks. Focus on slides and text.
Not an easy class, however topic is interesting and she teaches in an engaging manner. Tests are difficult, DO YOUR READINGS IN ADVANCE!! Final essay isn't easy however she does provide help if you're unsure how to tackle it. She's also super funny.
She lost my paper. Did decent on it though but would have been nice to see. Tests had next to nothing to do with what you study or learned in class, or focused on very specific nonsense that you would never think to look at. The course was interesting but not the testing.
Makes things more convoluted than necessary. She is very wordy and mumbles on and on. Her multiple choice on the exams are overly worded and tricky. She really lacks clarity. Read the textbook and attend her lectures. You have to do both with this professor. Hard work pays off in her class.
She has a real slant to her thinking, very one dimensional. She seems preoccupied mumbles a lot. Her multiple choice on the exams are designed to fool you. She really lacks clarity. This class has really taken its toll on my interest on the subject. Some people are just not born to teach, you have to work really hard just to get a C in this class.
The person below clearly had an axe to grind, trying to lower the prof's rating by posting twice. If you don't go to lectures and cannot think critically, DONT TAKE IT. The TA marked the exams,I found her to be useless. Prof.Gurevich is amazing and very helpful.
I didn't want to be "that guy" but she deserves it. PSY621 should be called "Psychology of HETEROsexuality". LGBT perspectives in her class are "skewed". Along with the other (true) negative accounts posted, she is quite rude to her students and designs the class for your failure. DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS with her (especially if you are LGBT)
She is a really knowledgeable prof and she remembers people's faces so attend lectures, plus I went through this course without the textbook and even then only attending the lectures still earned me a decent mark
Testing is not representative and the course is her random opinions. If you're into the topic, don't take it, just read some books and avoid her "gotcha" test questions and "gospel" interpretation. If you have to take it don't think just copy her own view back (if you can understand it). I learned more about bad university teaching than gender.
You have to put in work for this class, but you will be well rewarded. She is kind, and very very helpful if you go to office hours.
Very nice woman, very helpful when you ask for more information. This is my suggestion for essays - to ask questions, she's upfront about what she wants (which leads to good marks!). I found her exams normal - but make sure you study, don't wing it or last-minute it. Participating in class helps to remember the material. She does interactive stuff
Aced her class but it was super boring. Found multiple choice were totally random even though I studied a lot. I don't know what it is about her but I'm not a fan.
She a nice, chill professor. Easy marker. An essay and 3 cumulative tests. Attendance is not mandatory, tests are based of the textbook and assigned articles.
Dr. Gurevich does a fantastic job of exploring research conducted in the area and translating it into situations we encounter daily. Provides practice tests and essay help. She is student friendly and accommodating while altering the course when it best suited everyone. Tests are based on lectures for SA and textbook/article reading for MC.
She is a very nice and understanding prof! More importantly she responds to emails very promptly which I think a few profs lack! I find that she is helpful and very caring! I really appreciated her!
I loved professor Gurevich's class. She's very caring and loves to engage her students. She can be a little quiet so sitting up front helps a lot. As with any PSY class, you have to read the textbook. Her tests are fair, the essay was a little confusing for me. (I was proud of my paper but the T.A didn't like it so..) Best PSY class I've taken!
Nice, passionate and very knowledgable about the course content. However, I found her multiple choice questions were vague and came from tiny details in the textbook. SA were fine and fair. I brought my essay in for feedback a week before it was due and while she really liked it i only received an 80 which was disappointing. Overall good prof.
3 non-cumulative tests: MC (from lectures + readings) + SA (from articles/research papers assigned as readings but also discussed in class). Tests not very easy but also not hard. She tells you exactly what to study and even gives sample questions that show up on the test. 1 paper. Loved this class so much. 100% would recommend. Really interesting
One of the best profs, she is very caring and gives amazing advice on anything you ask. You can actually talk to her about anything! Class was amazing and went by so fast. Tests are fair and clear, I aced this course!!! Thank you :))
Maria is a lovely prof, really knows her content & her students. A previous review here said she wasn't LGBT inclusive, but I found she was very conscious of heteronormativity/cisnormativity and its effect on certain studies. Some of the exam questions were random, but she also told answers for a bunch of multiple choice question, so it was chill.
Dr. Gurevich is extremely passionate about what she teaches. She is very inclusive and open-minded. Her lectures are insightful and address taboo topics, which is important to reduce stigma. She is a strong critical thinker and encourages her students to think critically about society and gender structures. Tests mostly cover textbook. Fair marker.
one of the best professors i've had at ryeson and the course itself was so insightful! absolutely love her. she's very relatable and open to discussion. thoroughly explains topics.
I loved Maria. It was evident that she cared about her students and was passionate about her work. The exams are mainly on textbook material for the multiple choice, and the short answers are based on articles that she assigns. I felt like she graded the essay quite harshly.
I took the class after hearing so many good things but was pretty disappointed and felt regret afterwards. The prof takes forever to get through dry content and expects you to know so much textbook material for 30 mc questions on midterm and exam. She pulls details from the textbook so make sure you read!! Essay was interesting to write at least.
I really liked this prof. She's knowledgable on what she is teaching which makes the content more interesting. Slides can be kinda dry but she provides context. A lot of textbook reading for tests but she does provide some of the multiple choice questions and 2/3 short answer questions that will be on the tests. I would recommend this prof.
Great prof that wants her students to do well. Didn't like the men are trash approach she took tho. Test are good as she gives some multiple choice and short ans before hand but 30 multiple choice came from 4 chapters of the textbook and short ans from readings so lectures are unnecessary to attend. The essay was marked kinda hard. overall not bad
I really liked Maria as a person however I struggled with her teaching style. The MC questions are all from the textbook, which she doesn't cover in class, so you have to read a lot (1-2 chapters a week). The essay was challenging but she gave good advice. She takes a sociological/theory-based approach to many topics which I found quite difficult
Prof Gurevich is a gem. She genuinely cares about the well being of her students and literally does everything in her power to make sure everyone does well. She fully equips you for the exams and the criteria for her essay's are clearly outlined. Her MC q's are a little tricky but other than that, work hard and you'll do well.
Professor Maria has a unique teaching style specifically her PowerPoints are different compared other professors. She uses a lot of abbreviations and symbols but, they are easy to follow. If you come to class and study you will do well.
This prof is really genuine and you can tell she cares about her students. The multiple choice tests are mostly from the textbook and she gives you some hints before hand which Is nice. I find the topics interesting but the lectures usually pretty dry. She uses really complicated sentences and words to describe really simple ideas.
The class was awful and I had to work HARD for the grade, MAIN POINT- she does not make easier during COVID... we had about 60+ pages/wk reading 1.5hr recorded lecture/wk and USELESS weekly class. DONT TAKE COURSE IF YOU DONT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT SEX, YOULL HATE She claims that students just focus on lecture and slides... but you MUST read text.
LOVE HER! gives amazing feedback on the essays thats actually useful. content is super interesting and never boring. Most of the midterm and final exam questions are based off the textbook so you gotta read the chapters. makes the content fun and is very warm and accepting of everyone. Shes super cool and would love to take any class she teaches.
She gave us sample exams that had questions that were on the real exam, which was very helpful. She accommodated students during Covid, unlike a lot of professors. The exams were very lecture material based, I didnt use my textbook often. She records and uploads lectures which is nice too.
Dr Gurevich is the best Professor I' ve ever had. She genuinely cares about her students and the discussions we had during our synchronous meeting were absolutely amazing! Of course as an upper level liberal course there is a lot of reading, but, hey, we' re in university, not high school!
No complaints. A wonderful professor, and so accessible and patient with students. Highly recommend taking a course with her, she is so full of passion and ready to share it with everyone.
Dr. Gurevich has delivered a great curriculum and been extremely understanding during the pandemic. Really enjoyed her class because she was highly respectful of others and understanding of everyone. Plus, delivers a great and organized flow of content along with fair tests and assignments. Overall, highly consider taking this course if you can.
Dr. Gurevich is one of the best psych profs Ive ever had at Ryerson. Shes so passionate about her work and really wants her students to succeed. Lectures are easy to follow, and she posts sample test questions before the two tests and final exam, basically giving her students free marks because they pop up. HIGHLY recommend this prof to anyone
The content for this course is difficult, and you do need to put in extra effort into your reading and reviewing in order to get a high mark. That said, Dr. Gurevich is a fantastic professor and will provide as much feedback as needed in order to get the highest grade in the course. Very caring and understandable as well with extensions.
Professor Gurevich is an absolute gem! She is such a caring individual who is as passionate as she is understanding. Taking courses with her during the pandemic has really lifted my spirits. I'd recommend her classes to anyone.
Dr. Gurevich is a great person and clearly knows what she's talking about. My reservation is that her exams are really hard and lectures are VERY statistic-heavy. So many words. As someone who learns a lot better visually and audibly, the amount of reading and statistics involved makes it hard to do well on the exams. The paper was my saving grace!
One of my favourite courses and professors! Highly recommend. If you do end up taking this course, make sure to read the textbook as half of the test questions will be from there.
Professor Gurevich was great. The exams are online - but beware, the questions are difficult and unable to be found by simply searching google or the slides. There is tons of reading, textbook chapters as well as readings, ensure to watch the hour long videos she posts discussing the articles and take notes it'll really help you out!
She is truly one of the most caring and considerate profs I have ever encountered, truly the kindest. I loved taking her course and recommend everyone to take it with her. She deserves all the amazing reviews!
I mean she is an amazing person but don't fall to the illusion that online exams would be easy. It messed me up this semester. Not to mention, my GPA too. However, she is very understanding and lenient. I am not sure if her nice personality would be enough. So its up to you to decide, but I'd just avoid her.
For a course included in the Queer studies minor this class is very heteronormative. Very focused on her own research which mostly was on cishet womens experinces. The only time we talked about trans women was a question on the exam talking about fetishes that used very demeaning and outdated language. She should consider expanding course material
She is the best prof you'll ever have. I've taken 2 courses with her and you don't need to go to classes but I recommend it because the discussions are so interesting! I love that she leaves room in lectures for everyone to talk bc most profs don't care for that. She is so kind and accessible outside of classes. Just take her you won't regret it.
Love her! She is so caring and tries her best to learn all her student's names. She allows room for discussions in class and her lectures usually only take 2 hours. Her exams are easy and they are online. Just make sure you review the textbook as the test is heavily focused on that. The paper is graded very leniently as well
Professor Gurevich is an amazing and understanding instructor. While the content can be challenging, her engaging lectures and fair assessments make the class manageable. Using Unstuck study alongside the textbook helped me stay on top of the material.
Dr. Gurevich is a very compassionate and kind professor. While her lectures are statistics-heavy and wordy, she teaches in a way that is easy to digest. The essay was graded leniently and her exams, while online, were not easy and required studying. This is my second course with Maria and, if given the opportunity, would take another one with her.
Dr. Gurevich is an amazing professor. The exams were online, with two midterms, one assignment, and a final, each worth 25%. I scored in the mid-80s on all of them. She's passionate and truly cares about her students. I highly recommend her courses!
She created a great environment in class. Open to have convos! 3 exams and 1 paper worth 25% each. Exams were online. Paper was reasonable but some unclear grading criteria. Provided essay instructions early + plenty samples. Lectures were easy to comprehend and class convos were great. Wasn't familiar with gender terms/concepts but it was great.
