Her class is disorganized and she makes little effort to answer questions from students. She is often short and standoffish when answering questions. Her slides almost always have mistakes in them, and for the amount of work this class requires, she provides very little support. Had to get slides from the other prof to pass.
Dr. Maria has been very condescending towards questions asked in class, making no one willing to answer. Slides often include typos and wrong math, which she'll either tell you to correct on your own, or post many different versions which gets confusing. Not good explanations of the material, and lab material is all self-taught. Avoid if possible.
(for 300A) Dr Iankilevitch is incredibly condescending and her questions can have many different interpretations. She is not accommodating for students with disabilities and unapproachable. I dropped the class after a week and a half because it was causing me so much stress trying to navigate her expectations. Gonna take the class with a diff prof.
Dr. Iankilevitch having such a low rate my professor score is ridiculous. By no means is she a perfect professor, have lectures having the occasional error and confusing homework questions. But, her exams are based on exactly what you learn from homework, quizzes, and lectures. Those complaining did not try hard enough in her difficult class
I'm not a math person, but Dr. Iankilevitch made stats easy to understand and optimized students for success. I found that her slides were really organized and the combination of homework, quizzes, and labs were great preparation for the exams. iClicker participation is also an added bonus. This ended up being my strongest class this semester.
I don't know why Dr. Iankilevitch has such low ratings thus far. She made stats very understandable and gave students every opportunity to succeed in this class. The slides were organized and easy to understand, expectations were clear, and supplementary assignments like homework and quizzes allowed us to practice what we learned.
Dr.Iankilevitch made the content easy to understand by always explaining previously learned concepts before introducing new ones. Her slides were organized & didn't skip over any of the math. Test questions followed the same process used in class. Lots of homework, but it helps further understanding. Looking forward to taking 300B with her.
I don't know why she has negative reviews, she's a fantastic prof that really cares and wants her students to succeed. She clearly puts time and effort into creating her assignments (she typically makes the instructions funny). I am not a math person but she made stats doable for me which is saying something.
Maria is kind and it is clear how much she cares about her student's success. She explains the concepts and math thoroughly However, her exams are ridiculous. They don't test what you know they test your speed skills. Not enough time to read through the questions and demonstrate your knowledge. Good grade impossible, unless your speed skilled
Honestly not sure why Marias score is so low. She was very kind and she was fair with her expectations. She always showed up prepared for class, and she reviewed previous lessons before moving on to new content. She always answered emails and answered questions clearly. Reasonable exams that weren't out to destroy your grade; fair mark distribution
absolute gem of a woman, lovely personality. attendance is mandatory and lectures are heavy on research and academic findings however quizzes are doable if you go to lecture and take notes, assignments are fairly easy and final project is engaging!
I asked for help and was not helped, I had to watch a lot of youtube video's to finish equations because lectures are concept heavy. Nothing personal just not a good teaching match.
Fantastic! Having read the reviews on this page, I dreaded taking stats with Dr. Iankilevitch, but she was awesome. She explains all concepts clearly, uses iClicker in a productive way, and is just overall really good at simplifying stats concepts. Looking forward to taking 300b with her. Make sure you practice quick calculations, though. :)
Maria was awesome. She was well-prepared and organized for each lecture and took students' feedback for improvement. Midterm exams require similarity with calculations, so make sure you time yourself and practice a lot. Something to keep in mind is that the difficulty of the course has more to do with the course content itself but not the profs.
To my understanding Dr. Iankilevitch actually designed this course and she did it really well, each topic informed the next and it was done in a way that regardless of your personal opinions you could still do well. She came at topics from an academic perspective and it was very informative. Really clear and fair grading. Overall loved this course!
She allows for a cheat sheet in the exams which is amazing, however she barely gives time for you to finish the exam and do all the calculations . I ussually have 20 minutes or so left over for exams, but often I was finishing in the last few minutes. The first exam only myself and 10 other people in the class actually finished the exam.
Material was interesting, but the assignments and inflexibly shallow ways to engage with the materiel made it a little surface level for a third year course. She does seem very nice but. be careful. I would have dropped the course if I knew how ridiculously impossible the accommodations process would be in her class.
She explains concepts in class very well and provided lots of opportunities outside of class to practice your learning through homework assignments, quizzes, and a practice website. The only reason I didn't give her a 5/5 is because some of the questions on the quizzes are purposely misleading and designed to trick you
Super prepared and allows a cheatsheet on the exams which is a blessing
An interesting topic, but the assignments were all over the place. Attending lectures regularily in this class should give you enough information to easily pass. The final assignment seemed intimidating at first, but was actually not that bad. I thought this class was OK and I would only recommend it if you really enjoy topics in social justice.
allows cheat sheets in exams and the class average is usually 70-75%. lectures are very concept heavy and it translates to the exams. one issue i had was she didnt provide many practice questions and guides but she does give us websites to use for personal practice.
Had Dr. Iankilevitch for 300a & b. She was so great for both. Super clear when explaining concepts and left little room for ambiguity. Exams were fair, and we were allowed cheat sheets. The labs for this course felt a little less organized than 300a, though. Overall, if you are taking PSYC 300, take it with Dr. Iankilevitch; you won't regret it.
Dr. Iankilevitch has managed to learn the art of teaching math. I have always struggled with numbers, and the way she teaches the concepts and conducts her lectures has allowed me to actually *enjoy* learning statistics. She is extremely fair and forgiving with assignment marks. IClicker is counted as bonus, not mandatory. Couldn't recommend enough
Maria Iankilevitch is an amazing instructor. I was nervous but the course is designed to help you succeed. Very well structured. I actually found the course pretty easy. She went over concepts slowly and reviewed what we'd learned. Weekly homework and quizzes was great practice. 3 midterms, each covered a small portion of content before moving on.
Maria is a great professor, and she is incredibly caring. Her course structure is extremely well-organized, but the grading is quite tough.I found the intervention fairly unnecessary, especially considering that this was a 300-level course. Overall, I found the class a bit boring, but it covers important topics.
Key topics are covered well. Tough assignment criteria, limited feedback. No tests, a plus. Not much help on the final project; intimidating. Suggested ideas, then retracted with comments, making decisions challenging. Overall, a condescending demeanor.
Had her for both PSYC 300A/B she is an incredible Professor and is very kind and explains things really well. The exams for both courses are super fair and I think she is an amazing professor and makes the classroom feel really comfortable and supportive. She is also incredible at contact with students. Definitely recommend :)
Seems like a nice person but very rude in email correspondence. Unwilling to answer questions. Disappointed because I heard otherwise and made an effort to be in her class. Just seemed very uninterested in my learning anytime I reached out for help. Also midterms and final not out of many marks so if you lose marks you lose more percentage-wise.
Dr. Iankilevitch is accessible outside of class and replies to emails quickly. Her exams are fair, and she allows a double-sided cheat sheet, which is great. She explains the key concepts clearly, but some topics feel rushed. Some of her quiz and homework questions are very misleading, and she is not willing to discuss such things.
A very snobby, lazy, and self-righteous professor. Last exam was way too big for the 50 minutes provided. Hires someone else to do her labs for her, doesn't really care about students, goes too fast, makes assumptions, and is condescending. Ruined my enjoyment of this class.
Amazing prof! For a condensed summer course, she was able to explain all of the topics very clearly. She was very engaged with the students during class, and I never once felt bored during the 2 hour lectures. She can sometimes come off as condescending, but she grades fair and genuinely tries to help students understand the class content.
I think out of all the usual options, she is the best one to go with. Clear with her lectures and is willing to explain the concepts more in depth if needed. She reserves the class before the exam to go over concepts and I find that the labs are substantially more clear compared to if you would be is taking another professor's class.
Not my favourite. She does explain topics clearly but kind of just throws a ton of information at you really fast and the slides don't do a very good job being clear. If you're very, very organized you will do well. She kind of comes across as demeaning and not very approachable in my opinion.
Extremely condescending. Has way too much useless information on her slides. Limited amount of practice problems, and even after completing all of them and getting 100% you can still be thrown off by the exams. Has weirdly strict rules about reviewing your exams/quizzes.
Sadly better than Medler. Encouraged students to attend office hours, but often made questions feel unwelcome. Advised struggling students to drop the class—after the drop date—showing a lack of awareness/support. The class avg on exam 2 was 60%. At what point does poor performance reflect not just the students, but also the quality of instruction?
Seemed like a great professor at first with the cheat sheet and the highest mark/three for quizzes (meddlers allows no cheat sheet and uses average of all quiz attempts). When someone asks a question she answers like you just ruined her day. Super condescending and rude, even if u ask a smart question she seems pissed. Dr Chim's better if your able
How she's still teaching is beyond me. rude and demeaning. Less than two weeks from the end of term she is advising students to give up and not even bother trying anymore. Not only does she assign more work than other sections, she can't even teach the material. My grade dropped 35% from 300A. Lecture sections shouldn't be a gamble, yet here we are
Somewhat rude and condescending. Unclear slides, and marks on few things. Gets upset when any questions arise. Weirdly specific rules when you go in to viewexam (max 10 minutes). Is not open to feedback, which is ironic considering her faculty bio being focused on 'learning'
condescending, last average on exam was 60, includes irrelevant info in lectures/slides that you will spend so much time studying and will never be tested on.
She is alright. Not very nice when you express concern/ask for help. Most of us are taking this class because we have to, and are not particularly good at this type of stuff, she kind of acts like its the whole reason we came to school and that we should know it very well. Homework helps u learn it well though. Exams hard... good luck.
A professor who gives her students encouragement is important to me. She does not. She told the class to drop the course if we didn't do well on midterm 2, she didn't tell us to keep trying. Her class average is very low. Her course load is extremely heavy and doesn't come off in a understanding manner when questions are asked in lecture.
In every class, she perpetuated this demeaning behaviour, undermining our confidence and enthusiasm for the subject. Her suggestion to drop the course 2 weeks before it was over, was not only insensitive but impractical. Her recommendation completely disregarded the sacrifices we made to enroll as students. Profound lack of empathy and respect.
Her teaching approach was consistently condescending; she would halt lectures until students posed questions, only to belittle us by asserting that we should already know the answers. This routine not only stifled our willingness to engage but also fostered an environment of fear and humiliation. I'd suggest any other proff but her!!!
Took time to go to her group study hours because I was having difficulty with some questions. Showed her my work and thought process, and asked if I had done the work correctly. Her answer "I don't know, have you done it correctly?". I said I think so. She shrugged her shoulders and said "maybe". Turns out all of the questions were incorrect. Wtf?
My experience with 300B was frustrating. Concepts that could have been explained simply were bogged down by weird statistical jargon that was hard to understand. Exams were not out of many marks so if you missed something you could lose a lot. Agree with other ratings that encouraging dropping a class in March is just not right. Very unfortunate!
Unclear slides. Not sure why we were learning a brand new topic 5 days before the final without any review before a cumulative exam, and homework/quiz due 24hr before AND lack of study guide. Doesn't really seem like Maria wants her students to succeed, slides were atrocious and vague. I had to use chat gpt to explain a lot of concepts.
If you can avoid a class with her, definitely do so. It seems like she assumes students should easily understand a concept she has been studying for years. When they don't immediately understand, she acts annoyed. She misled students about what topics would be emphasized on the final when someone asked about it during the last class.
Rude and condescending. Crazy behaviour towards students for a grown woman.
Class structure and lectures are engaging/interesting. But the TA/ and prof gave harsh grades, with minimal feedback to substantiate such a harsh grade. Interesting topics, lectures were relevant, but get ready for extremely harsh/rushed grading.
Very strange lady - behaves in such an immature / weird way towards students half her age. Has weird, arbitrary rules about homework, quizzes, and tests. Wants you to round number in a specific way to get the right answer (like round after EVERY computation). Overall just a strange experience. Learnt the material through ChatGPT.
If you're looking for a supportive and engaging professor who genuinely cares about her students' success and understanding, I highly suggest you avoid Maria's course. Her behaviour towards students who are facing the content for the first time is condescending and odd. She acts annoyed when faced with questions and genuinely makes you feel dumb.
Maria was kind and open to answering questions and gave lots of opportunity to seek extra help. Sometimes u could tell she was looking for a specific answer, but this is stats there IS only one right answer. People often asked super dumb questions or obvi were distracted, and I think she handled them with grace. Super fair exams and homework.
As a person she was rude, condescending, and talked down to students constantly. Not flexible, she is not open to discussions of grading errors or confusion. Is a decent prof, and explanations of concepts were fine, although could be simplified. Pretty slow paced, good slides, easy course to keep on top of. Redo the homework and extra practice Qs
Heavy course load. Most the students were confused with course material, she wouldn't explain concepts and would expect us to know the answer if a question was asked. Encouraged us to drop the course 2 weeks before the final if we did bad on the second midterm for our “well being”(then receiving a Fail) If that doesn't speak volumes idk what can.
She does not seem to know what she is teaching and every student is lost in her lectures. She is aware of this and just awkwardly stands and waits for a reply from the class. Maybe if nobody speaks in class its time to re-evaluate your position. UVIC can't keep any profs and should be held accountable for all of the awful feedback from students.
Seriously, do anything you possibly can to avoid taking any of her classes. I've had her for two courses already and both have been absolutely dreadful. I cannot express how rude and condescending she is to every single student in class. She consistently makes you feel stupid for asking reasonable questions. Avoid at all costs for your own sanity
Dr. Iankilevitch is adept at facilitating an active and engaged learning environment. PSYC 431B is a seminar class with a flipped classroom format such that students take a central role in their own and their classmates' learning. The assignments for this class were especially helpful in preparing me for graduate level studies. Highly recommend!
I honestly feel like she doesn't want her students to succeed she makes the material harder than it actually needs to be, then makes you feel like an idiot when it isn't done her way. Honestly feels like she wants us to struggle.
feigns empathy and understanding by giving students a cheat sheet and the two lowest grades taken off. But then she's passive aggressive, demeaning, overcomplicates topics, and seems to try to purposely mislead on quizzes and homework leading to low exams marks because of that. Got an A in diff stats but will not this class due to her teachingstyle
She often acts like the classroom is a place to show authority rather than support learning. Her tone feels controlling, and she seems more focused on enforcing power dynamics than actually helping students understand the material.
if you have the option, to not take her class, just don't.
I will never put myself through another class with her. It seems like to try to purposely misleads on the homework and quizzes and practice exams leading to failure on exams, also makes the class harder then it actually is. Heard the other prof teaching the same course is the way to go.
I strongly advise against taking her courses. I genuinely felt I grasped the course material and adhered closely to her assignment rubric. However, she's an exceptionally difficult grader whose criteria don't align with her rubric. Furthermore, she's quite rude when seeking clarification. I suspect she derives satisfaction from giving poor grades.
Feels like she doesn't respect her students in this class. Her tone is consistently rude and discouraging, she often asks questions about the material and gets irritated or snappy when students don't know the answer. It creates a really uncomfortable atmosphere and most of us end up confused rather than learning.
What a joke. Her tone is rude, her lectures are just her reciting papers, and the TAs seem to enjoy lowering your grade. The fact that 2/3 of my grade is decided through creative work in a 300 level psychology class is insane, especially so when the TAs just roll the dice when marking us. The entire class needs a rework asap
I enjoyed this class and appreciated Dr. I's highly organized and thorough lectures and overall pedagogy. She had a demeaning attitude towards questions in lecture, but was respectful via email. The creative assignments and intervention fair presentation assessments need revision; creative work shouldn't be graded by those without design expertise.
i am not sure why she gets so much hate. she is a little rude in her tone but the class is super easy if you understand simple math
Extremely unclear teaching and grading. Assignments and exams often hinge on semantics not taught in class, rather than actual understanding. Communication is condescending and defensive, and grading on exams is inconsistent with lecture slides. Creates unnecessary stress, would not recommend if you want a fair or accessible learning environment.
One of the most unprofessional profs I've ever had. Condescending, defensive, and impossible to communicate with. She is very snarky and rude to students asking questions. Grading is inconsistent, nitpicky, and contradicts her own slides. Exam questions have very unclear wording. Creates a hostile, stressful learning environment. Avoid at all costs
If I could rate her a 0. Instead of evaluating your understanding of statistics, the she seems to be testing how well you can interpret her oddly worded questions. The phrasing is inconsistent and unnecessarily confusing. She is just awful.
worst prof I've ever had in my years of post-secondary education. Never have I come across a prof so condescending and rude to her students. Do yourself a favour and avoid taking a class with her
Very strange for a grown woman who's been in the field to act the way she does with students. Unprofessional and confusing questions, and she makes the content so much harder than it needs to be. Super frustrating experience overall
Lectures were almost completely focused on studies/research rather than real-world examples and general knowledge which I found odd and quite dry when the content could have been interesting. She was nice enough but I understand where the other reviews are coming from
If I could give zero stars I would. Just an absolute atrocious experience being in her class
Give yourself a blessing by avoiding her at all costs. Had her for two courses and both were just an overall absolute awful experience. I will never put myself through that again. She give such a weird vibe, seems nice at first but is just rude and unsympathetic towards her students. Also feels like she has power trip over her students.
Seriously avoid at all cost, all terrible ratings are true and beyond some. The fact she still a professor here is beyond me. UVIC seriously needs to give her a boot.
She is not testing you on statistics but on her own crazy worded questions. Saw multiple students walk out crying after the last exam, pretty accurate sign to not take her classes. Just avoid at all cost for your own sanity. Furthermore, she is rude, condescending, dismissive, and just overall does not care if her students do well or not.
I remember reading the ratemyprof ratings before taking her class and thinking "oh I'm sure it will be fine"..... moral of the story, I should have listened to the ratings. I think the way she delivered the content was honestly okay (considering its stats) but her personality and tone as an individual is AWFUL. I need to know who hurt this women.
Feel like i don't have to say much, just read all the terrible reviews because they are all TRUE. Just avoid at all costs for you own mental well-being.
Regret my decision to take stats with Maria. If you have the option, pick Chad. Exams are SO difficult to understand; she is more worried about the theory behind stats rather than the actual equations. Doesn't matter if you do well on the homework; she low-key sets you up to fail on the exams.
This class is way more confusing than it needs to be. The notation changes constantly, the z-table is non-standard and unclear, and wording in questions feels intentionally vague like she's testing us on riddles. The material isn't hard, but the teaching makes it feel harder than it is. She as a person was rude, and had a very strange behaviour.
Here's the thing, the concepts itself are very easy. What makes it hard is the arbitrary, convoluted, expectations she has. Like others said, she's rude, passive aggressive, and unyielding especially when you try to clarifying things. I loved and understood stats, she has made me confused, frustrated, and not put as much effort as I can.
Wish she would word things to make questions easier to understand rather than confusing. What you read here is, unfortunately, all true. She knows her stuff but makes it feel like you are dumb when you don't understand.
I can't speak for her stats class, but for PSYC 387 I thought she was a great professor. She was clear and concise, and you always knew what to expect. I really appreciated how organized the course was and how supportive she was when I went to office hours. I never found her condescending; she was always respectful of students' contributions.
she seriously does not deserve all this hate. yes she can be condescending but it is not a hard course. i think shes good at what she does
