she is really cool, she's got a bit of an accent. the only thing is to always read the chapters and attend class, you could get a good grade easy.
she has an interesting way of lecturing which grabbed my attention and made me want to learn. i suggest being to class on time cause a lot of her tests is lecture, and read the text! super cool lady, highly recommended.
if you need to take a science class, i wouldnt recommend this one. more than half the students failed. the tests are hard and you have to read the chapters from front to back. so good luck
the context of the class is complex but fun... if you take her you have to be really serious because she is not going to pass you if you dont work har. attendance is not mandatory but it is important if you miss one day chances are that you miss some test questions. The best advice is to study hard :)
She is an interesting teacher, stays on topic and she is willing to answer any questions. Like any other college class, you have to work hard for your grade!! Don't miss class and take good notes! I recommend Dr. Jelaca-Tevakoli!!
AMAZING TEACHER! she is really passionate about the topics and she funny and realistic. she's really cool. but dont take her class on summer, since it's a short semester she goes really fast, i really had some difficulty but made it at the end, and enjoyed the class
Do you know what microcephaly means? I highly recommend to take notes for her visual test. The written test are based on the textbook, just read at least twice. Overall, I think you will either amazed how much you will learn at the end of the semester!
I liked the class I learned new stuff very helpful, the teacher made her self seem at first tough but as time was passing she was nice very BOLD like she would describe her self but she was a nice teacher,I know I wasnt the best student on that class but I did enjoy going to her class.everyday she had something intesting to teach!highly recommend!!!
She's awesome! definitely putting on her game face at the beginning, but she is actually nice! I admit, tests are hard, she picks these little things from the book, so tip:READ it's not impossible. I love this class cause she's hilarious, even though she's not trying to be. I take two sets of notes, one on lecture and one on the funny things she says.
Awesome class with amazing teacher. I knew nothing about the subject beforehand but she is able to break it down so anyone can understand. It's extremely helpful to read the book and try to show up on time, it will benefit you for the tests. She seems intimidating at first but she is so passionate that I looked forward to her class.
Prof. Jelaca-Tavakoli is certainly one of a kind. Although her multi-choice tests are crazy, the visual tests are easy as long as you pay attention which give you somewhat of a safety net. In order to pass the class, read the chapters IN DEPTH or you'll be lost. Overall, this class is great, you learn a lot as long as you're up for the challenge
She is very funny, helpful and very, very interested in her students learning the main concepts of every lecture! she goes out her way ro help her students by having office hours that she is not even paid for! she is great! you just have to read lots and you have to be in class to understand the material........
I don't recommend her at all, she's not helpful. Take Corinna Guenther if you wanna take a good teacher.
This class was great. I really enjoyed being part of her class. She is very interesting and also at times funny. The class itself is somewhat difficult, but as long as you keep up with the reading your golden. BTW I know your going to read this so here goes: if you took an extra 5 mins in the morning getting ready, you would look very attractive.
This class is fun however it is not an easy class! If you only go by the lectures it seems easy but her multiple choice tests are like the SAT's where all the answers are right but one more than the others..so u can be screwed. She's super funny and always looks like a hawt mess! She'shelpful to the max&kind!congrats on being full time now Doc.!
Has trouble articulating during lectures. Has a weird rule where if you're late you have to stand near the door and everyone stares at you until she allows you to sit. Exams are very difficult. I'm glad I don't have her again this semester.
I love this teacher, besides being HOT, she is really funny and makes the class super interesting!she tries to scare off weak stupids during the first week but it's really not hard. all you have to do is use a website that she gives you to study and take notes. if you acutally like anthropology you'll be fine.
I took this class with three of my friends. They each got a "B" and I got an "A". She's a hawt mess and funny. I leatned a lot but the class is not easy! My friends and I worked our asses off to get the grades we got.
Professor Maria Jelaca-Tavakoli is A M A Z I N G!! I really respect and admire her. She's really funny and she actually takes her time to outline the chapters for us. She lectures by power points using the main concepts of the chapter..she even finds pictures so we can really understand. She's amazing at description and she really makes u get it.
Nice, but doesn't appear to be qualified to teach the class. Her surface-level knowledge of the course content makes it difficult to follow her tangents, and there were numerous times where she would say something off-the-wall and when questioned wasn't able to back herself up with facts. Take if you need an easy A and don't care about accuracy.
Fun & exciting class,I guarantee that you will laugh every class meeting. This class is no cake walk, do not pay attention to those who say this class is an easy A, you really have to put some effort in if you want a good grade. 4 quizes, 3 tests, & 1 group response. Prof Tavakoli is very smart, sexy, and funny. Take her and you wont regret it!
greaaaaaatt teacher and very interesting class. i took biological anthropology w her and barely passed the class because of the tests but really awesome teacher i highly recommend her but you do have to study and read alot.
I really enjoy this class. Lectures are upbeat and interesting. She really gets the class discussing and sharing ideas. Although I love this class, it is very hard. She gives no homework other than reading, but there really is no room to slack off.
Teacher will take her time to make sure you understand the material. She really enjoys teaching anthro and is very passionate about it. Lectures are completely related to the book and for testing you really have to study. But the class is not as hard as she says, I personally loved this class and I recommend it to serious students, not an easy A.
She opened our eyes to the world. She taught us the meaning of humanity. I look at different cultures other than my own with a renewed respect and understanding. This was a very sophisticated class taught by a sophisticated teacher. I never knew the interestingly pure concept of gift giving of "Moka"in Papua New Guinea until I delved in this class
I had her for an online course. Needless to say the course isnt too difficult, but when Blackboard screwed up and kicked me out of a quiz when I was only half done, she wouldnt budge on letting me finish my quiz when it was Blackboards fault!! She doesnt understand how crappy & glitchy SWC's blackboard is. and b/c of her incompetence I had to drop!
I loved her class, she explains everything really good, makes all the lectures really interesting and catches your attention with great images and powerpoints, take a lot of notes, but mostly go to every class and pay attention, I did well in tests mostly by paying attention in class. She is very open minded, excellent teacher, strongly recommend.
Online course. Some test questions were pointless or ridiculous. Those questions were to confuse students & make the course "challenging". I got all A's on exams & still don't see their utility. DB was a disappointment. Lack of stimulating response from instructor + lots of typos from someone who'd stressed proof-reading. Took her time grading DB.
She'll scare the living crap out of you on the first day, but don't let that affect you! She turned out to be so funny and sweet. I learned so much in this class, even things that weren't about the class. Interesting facts and just a lot about life. Your book will be your best friend and attending class is vital. Great teacher and great class.
Professor Jelaca-Tavakoli is a wonderful professor. She looks a little bit like a cross between Katie Holmes and Andrej Pejic, which is a compliment! I've taken her online course and traditional one. Online course lacks her swagger she brings to the classroom, but I must say the online course was easier. Take note of EVERYTHING in the text!!
Not an easy class to pass. You really need to read and study your textbook in order to pass the tests... which she does tell you a bunch in the beginning, so it shouldn't be a surprise. I ended up getting a D because I barely read the book. However, I don't regret taking this class. Her lectures were so fun and interesting, I really enjoyed going.
Her class is very interesting , the amount of knowledge she has is awesome. I wish I could just hold her head and recieve everything she knows . She knows the subject from first hand experiences because she has traveled all over .I would recommend reading the book because she goes off topic a lot and misses important points of the chapter.
Take her class seriously, she's no joke. She's very strict and stern but she's also really funny. Make sure you do the readings before class and study! I enjoyed her class.
Professor Jelaca-Tavakoli is a wonderful teacher she was so much passion and inside knowledge about every topic that will be read in the book. The book will be your best friend and always read ahead of time so you have a better understanding of the material and if you have questions ask them don't hesitate.Class participation is important
She is a very interesting and funny woman, I enjoyed her class very much. However I'm upset that I bombed most exams and quizzes considerably because she would never specify what the test questions would be about. Some topics in test questions, were never talked about in class. [Very specific questions about specific groups of people for example]
Ok class , the only thing that kept me interested was her. She is an attractive woman.
In class, she is very professional (and funny). Outside of the classoroom, she is so awesome and fun to talk to! Her class is easy if you like reading and tests. She knows what she is talking about and I learned so much from her class!
she rambles on for days , goes completely off topic. Must read textbook & syllabus or you will fail. She has some sort of humor and class is entertaining , but learned nothing in class because of her constant rambling
It's a very nice and easy class if you read the textbook and pay attention to everything she says. If you really can't pay attention to every detail, you won't like her classes. But, she is very nice and fun to talk to
This was one of the first college courses I was really interested in. Loved coming to class and learned something new every time!Seems strict at first but do not be intimidated. She knows her field very well and is very enthusiastic about the subject. Would not hesistate to take course again. Read the chapters and you'll be fine.
Took her for cultural anthro. You cannot miss lectures or you will fall behind. She tests a lot of visuals used in exams, so take note. She offered a 30pt extra credit based on something she mentioned very briefly. MUST PAY ATTENTION. Most info in powerpoints is in the textbook so pay more attention to what she is saying rather than what you see.
Great class!! She lectures with a PowerPoint and can sometimes spend more than half the class on one slide! But it's all very interesting. Get used to the words/phrases: "problematic" "from an anthropological prespective..." "do you know what I mean?" This class changes your view of the world!!! Really eye opening
AWESOME PROFESSOR!!!! First and foremost, keep your religious beliefs outside the door before you enter. She will MAKE sure of that too. Don't you dare speak of religion in the class or else she will make sure that it's not a valid point. There is only one text book needed as well. She will open your eyes to very interesting things as well!
She is one of the best I have come across in my school years. Her class really opened my eyes on different topics and to my potential future career. You HAVE to pay attention and you HAVE to study and take notes, because this IS a rather challenging subject. Her tests are quite difficult, but if you really work, you can definitely pass her course.
I will begin by saying she is hot! Second, great class. I learned a lot and there were many eye openers. Take everything she says serious because that women knows what shes talking about. Great lectures, great books and if you do your work (study) you WILL pass. I learned from her lectures and I learned a lot from her character.
Best class I have ever taken shes an incredible teacher and I feel like she truly has given me a taste of what university is going to be likeDont take this class if youre a slacker it is not an easy A take everything she says seriously she doesn't mess around her tests are hard and you have to study superhard topass very passionate a greatlecturer
This was an interesting class with a GREAT instuctor. She really knows her stuff and inspires u to learn more. The lectures were interesting and relevant, good video clips. She expects u to read (watch those photo captions!). The quizes weren't too bad, but the T/F questions can screw up if u don't watch the scantron closely. Highly recommended!
First of all she is an attractive woman. Second, she is a great professor, delivers lecture at university level and provides very interesting topics. Prepare to work and read as this is not your typical SWC blowoff class. Dr. Jelaca knows her stuff very well so be prepared to participate and learn.
Best Professor EVER !!! i loved going to her class everything was interesting and she really made you open your eyes kinda hard but great class overall !!! pay attention to all the slides and captions take notes always attend class !!! (:
The first week she seems really scary but she's a wonderful professor, I LOVE her SO MUCH.This isn't a slacker class, you learn alot,& if you're really into the class it will change your life.Your grade is completely based off your quiz and test scores so don't screw up. There is only ONE extra credit chance and its toward the end of the course.
Overall, a very wonderful instructor. Although on the first day, the professor may be considered "intimidating", she is merely trying to challenge her students to work harder. Her lectures are very easy to understand and she takes the time to explain anything that is hard to understand. Plus, she's very funny. By far, she is my favorite professor.
She kinda had me intimidated at the beginning, but once I started paying attention in class and using the book, I started doing better. She's very thought provoking and funny.
Seemed overwhelming at first, but she is very funny, and made class interesting with the visuals. Nice style of teaching.
2nd time taking class, NOT AN EASY A. But oh boy will you LOVE THE SUBJECT. she is SUPER Knowledgeable on the subject and has tons of experience. Will answer any question you have. Take her but DO THE WORK, READ and PAY ATTENTION TO PP
She is a great teacher. She knows what shes talking about and enjoys it. You learn a lot from her. My biggest mistake was not reading the boo because thats where all the tests come from. So GET READING!
AMAZING CLASS, GREAT TEACHER. PREPARE TO REBORN . YOUR PERCEPTIONS OF REALITY WILL CHANGE. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. SHE IS BEAUTIFUL.
Definitely and interesting class, the professor always goes off topic, seems to have some type of obsession against "Westerners". If you want an easy A, just memorize all of the textbook and pay attention to the PPT. This professor does not make you think outside the box but rather wants you to memorize everything in the book(multiple choice exams)
Go to class with an open mind. Some trigger warning subjects, but she presents them in a way that is thorough. Revolutionary courses, and appreciate her openness to discuss subjects. Had a lot of fun, and sorry to see this class end. STUDY NOTES AND BOOKS! She is accommodating as long as you can back yourself up if you're absent.
Excellent professor ! She will challenge your mind and make you see things in a new light. Be prepared to study, COME TO CLASS, read textbook and online sources, and MAKE FLASHCARDS. Not an easy A, but definitely a great class to take ! Funny and kind too :)
Tests straight out of the book's study guide website and lectures! GO TO CLASS or regret every day you're absent cause her lectures are amazing! An international view on things, just what college kids need.. Listen to this woman! You WILL learn stuff. Intimidating at first, but funny (and dark!), incredibly knowledgeable. She loves what she does.
Very interesting class. You learn a lot of information. You MUST attend class, read the articles, AND read the textbook. She bases most of her test on the textbook. She's very intimidating at the beginning of the semester, but loosens up real quick!
She is awesome!!! Started hating it, ended up loving it!!!!! You have to work hard and study day by day.
Take class online with her! At first you think it's tough but you have to do what's required read, power points, videos, extra credit and write essay MLA style and in text citing while writing to get points, if you don't you get zeros! . She expects a lot from you but I think online easier then going to her class? Trust me you won't regret it.

Only reason her class is hard is because she does it by points. Meaning 500-499 points is an A. There are no percentages so literally every single question on a test or quiz counts as a point. That kinda screwed me over. Other than that she's a little intimidating but her lectures are amazing. The topics are so interesting and i was never bored.
Cultural Anthr with her has been the most interesting subject ive had at college so far, class was pretty cool, now im thinking of changing my major from sociology to anthropology. Book is essential, you do need to read the whole chapter in order to pass exams
Biological Anthropology isn't the easiest subject to learn but Professor Maria Jelaca-Tavakoli does a good job teaching it. The hardest thing about her class is her test are based on the book and her PP, so you DEFINITELY need to read the book and take notes to pass her tests(which are multiple choice except one short, written test). No homework.
You will need the book and read the chapters and make plenty of flash cards. Her grading is very straight forward. Her lectures are interesting even though I had no idea what she was talking about. ( I suck at science). My warning is if you are looking for a class to meet your science GE class take something else this class is hard.
Took the fast track for cultural anthropology, it was a three hour class but, I found it easier to understand the material better sitting in the class room. She doesn't give homework, but you have to keep up with the reading from the book be cause she doesn't lecture from the book, she'll test you on it. So read. It is a really interesting, intense
She is great. People who don't do very well in this class are most likely the ones who didn't listen properly; she tells you exactly what to do to pass. She is very friendly and approachable. Sometimes she may seem very blunt or even stand-off-ish, but that's probably because you asked a question about something she repeated 5 times. Funny, too!
I've taken two classes with her and am obsessed. She makes everything interesting and her personal stories will charm your pants off. Class is very straight forward, what she says she means. If you're looking for an easy A, this isn't it. If you're willing to put in the work though, I highly recommend it
An amazing professor, her lectures are very interesting and informative. I suggest a serious attitude about learning if you take this class because she will not tolerate otherwise. Keep up with reading!!
Seriously, miss one day and you will be lost, if not in class the next time you decide to show up, during test time. This class takes a high degree of focus during lectures, excellent note taking, and homework. Tavakoli will answer your questions. Be specific! Tests include both lecture and textbook material.
First impression of this teacher: Scary. Cold European facial features and wears black all the time. Impressions from the rest of the semester: friendly, funny, borderline adorable teacher. Half of the tests are from the book, the rest from lectures. Read thoroughly and pay attention to lectures. You have to really earn an A here, but you can.
Great lectures , I took this class with another professor and it was Boring , she makes class interesting !!! She is one of The best professsors, she gives personal experiences And it makes you understand information better!!! Take Her,you would love anthropology by The end of The semester!!
She is the real deal! Take separate notes for both the lecture and when you read the text book. You have to be fast with your notes during lecture! She doesn't allow any recording devices of any kind. Constantly ask if the material she is talking about will be on the test.
An amazing teacher to say the least! is there for the students 110 PERCENT! amazing lectures and she will work with you no matter what! Notes are required to get the full and amazing learning that she will bestow upon you. She'll make you work for the grade but when you leave you will wish that you could have her a few hours longer. Love her!
She's a super sweet lady and makes the lectures interesting; as long as students participate. You absolutely NEED to read the textbook if you plan to get an A or a B on your tests. Overall good teacher and interesting class!
She's the best teacher ever! She's very clear on her lectures, she makes the lectures fun and she will explain until you understand it! It's a must to read the book, and don't skip class at all! I loved her class and I'm sure that you're going to love it to. (:
She is absolutely wonderful! A brilliant professor with an extraordinary sense of humor. I learned a whole lot in this course and so will you. I believe that if you pay absolute attention in her class, there is no way you can get anything lower than a B. Nevertheless, read the book because you will not only be enlightened but you will get an A.
The Professor gives off a very strict yet professional vibe in a classroom setting. But she is so adorable! The book is essential to passing to catch key terms since she tends to slide through her presentations very fast and nothing is ever posted on blackboard. Amazing professor for a widely ignored topic. The way she teaches is absolutely amazing
One of the best professors I've ever had. She knows what she's talking about and is really friendly and adorable. Super interesting class! Pay attention to her powerpoints and read the textbook and you will definitely pass.
Incredible professor, very intimidating at first but warms up as the class goes on. She has a morbid sense of humor, and has tons of amazing stories from Eastern Europe, which she incorporates into lecture. Just go to lecture and read the book and you will pass. To top it off she's pretty cute.
I thought I liked her at the beginning, but with time I noticed that she wants to make you think like she does, and instill her own ideas on you. I didn't like that at all. I also didn't think she graded fairly. I wouldn't take her again.
Professor Tavakoli is the best. She has a dark sense of humor, but she loves what she's teaching. She told us on the first day of class that she wanted us to imagine our world views were glasses and that she was going to step on those glasses and shatter them. I knew then I had found a good prof. READ THE BOOK and study the pictures in lecture!!
Tough but interesting class. You have to make sure you read the material beforehand to understand the concepts she will go over during lecture. Has visual portions on her test so you can't miss class (does not post powerpoints online). It can get really tough but it's worth it.
Professor is very clear and precise during lectures, but also keeps them interesting by drawing upon her personal experiences and opinions; provides a lot of information, however I feel students should be given more than just 5 opportunities to build up points towards their final grade. I would definitely take more of her classes if I needed to.
Wonderful. Provides a lot of insight to different things. Plays devils advocate a lot(in a good way) which only makes you want to pay attention. Very engaging and the course is very eye opening. You wont forget this class or this professor!
This professor gives very interesting lectures that you will never forget. The visual exams are very easy if don't have any absence. The tough part is the multiple choice exam, there are questions taken from random material that you never cover in class. Most of the time those questions are not even in your book... Not an easy A just from studying
Professor Tavakoli, by far, is my absolute favorite professor on campus. She's tough, she doesn't take any excuses. If you don't study, come to class and take notes, don't expect to pass with anything higher than maybe a mid-C. If you're struggling, study sessions w/ classmates AND do any excredit! It helps! Those 40 points boosted me to a B.
This is one of the best Professor you will ever take !!! She is so approachable, and she is incredibly smart !! She cares that all her students understand. Please be aware that her classes are not that easy so she will make you work for that Best lectures !! Sit in the front, visuals are in the exam ! Do not confuse a primate with a tiger !! :) lol
Best professor ever!! She's very smart , and she is very approachable please read ahead !! This will help you understand the concepts of the lecture and the lab. She lets you work in teams, but you are individually graded. You can do very well in her class just apply yourself!! Take her 205 !! Believe me !! Awesome ( Drop the mic)
I really enjoyed taking medical anthropology this semester. I had never taken ANTH 101 or ANTH 102 so at first I was really nervous. However, Dr. Tavakoli is such a great professor that it didn't matter. I learned so much about medical case studies and western and eastern medicine. In order to do well, you must attend class and take notes.
You only get 5 chances to earn points for grade + 1 or 2 chances for extra cred. She likes to promote her field, forensic anthro; ends sem w/ video "if you want to be a forensic anthro" & there are many irrelevant questions about it on final. Exams have repetitive questions. You will learn the most from her classes but your GPA will drop for sure.
Took her class this spring 2016 and she knows her stuff. She is very hard , but you have to put in the work one must read the text, but she does offer extra credit so this will give you some extra points. She is worth taking she is very smart and easy to talk to. I would take her again.
I had a difficult time learning the material. Prof. Tavakoli, used images and lectures that are not linked to the book and when she gave examples she not always used the terms in the book. Which made it difficult during the tests because the test were all based on case studies in the book and terms in the book. read the book don't skip class.
Very interesting professor, never a dull moment in class but if you don't read the book and pay attention to the case studies in class it will be hard for you to do well in the course. Also she has an accent but it's not too hard to understand just a heads up.
Great professor overall I didn't have any disappointments she is a bit of a tough grader, but she does it to prepare you. Good sense of humor you'll never have a boring lecture from her. You do need to read and take your own notes along with the ones you can take in class. Don't drop the class unless you're not ready for a challenge. Good luck!
Wouldn't recommend this teacher if you are a slow pace learner since she tends to jam all chapters when she falls behind and doesn't spend a lot of time on specific topics. Also, she has an accent which makes it a little hard to understand when she is doing lectures . A lot of readings and when she falls behind she might pop out with a random exam.
I took her for summer and she is amazing. This class is hard but she made it easy for students to understand the material. Besides she gives plenty of example and cares about their students!! Extra credit :D Great professor I would take her again, no doubt.
ANTH 102 is a rare gem of a class. It's one of those classes that requires group participation and interested learners. I truly believe that this class creates better thinkers and more conscious students. Professor Tavakoli is an incredible instructor with great expertise in the field of anthropology. She truly knows how to challenge her students.
Wonderful teacher. You will pass as long as you show up pay attention and study. She makes everything easy to understand.
Really interesting and great class to take. She makes it interesting and gives a lot of information that makes you keep wanting more.
If you pay attention in class youre most likely going to pass her exams.
Professor Tavakoli is probably the best professor I've ever had. I personally love lecture-heavy classes rather than classes with group activities. Her lectures are phenomenal and she's hilarious. I took Cultural Anthropology and I recommended it to many people. However, her tests are difficult and you really need the textbook to pass the class.
Be prepared to read the book and go to class. Her tests are 50% based on image,s and case studies, from her lectures and 50% from what you read in the book. Her lectures are interesting and shes pretty funny. She does this thing where she crosses her eyes and i find it hilarious XD
Prof. Jelaca is one of the most interesting individuals I've ever had the opportunity to learn from. She has a great sense of humor and makes lectures really interesting. The lectures might not go over all the info you are expected to know, so you MUST read the book if you want to pass the exams and understand what she is talking about .
The best professor and the most interesting class I have ever taken!! Her lectures are amazing and you remember everything she says. You have to read the textbook because her tests are based on case studies and on what you read in the book! Not an easy A but if you put in the work you'll definitely get an A!! TAKE PROFESSOR JELACA-TAVAKOLI!!!
Dr. Jelaca is very passionate about her field and you get that in every lecture. Be ready to be surprised and learn a lot of yourself as a human. She is hilarious, every lecture is fantastic.
Her lectures are amazing, probably one of the best I've ever heard but when it comes to test good luck! There is no study guide. After taking 2 exams already, I have no idea what would be on the 3rd. I wouldnt recommend this class unless ur crazy about anthropology. If u want a easy requirement class. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! Part of her exams are
She comes as a tough professor and loosens up throughout the semester but one thing for sure is that her class is hard if you are not familiar with Anthropology. I would recommend reading the book in order to get a grasp of what she will be lecturing, if you do not do this, you will fail. Her accent may be hard to understand in occasions.
Her lectures are always interesting, she keeps it real and has a great sense of humor. I'm taking Cultural Anthropology with her, an 8 week course. It's tough keeping up with all the reading, but she makes it possible to learn SO much. If you're looking for an easy A, take a different class. She makes you work for your grade + little extra credit.
If you really want to pass this class you have to read the book. Second, attend every single lecture. Not only are you missing out on what is going to be on half the test, she's very intelligent and knows her stuff. Her teaching style is made in a way that everyone can understand too.
This class was very enjoyable. There was a tendency to get sidetracked. While this was fun, I think it hurt our preparation for exams. I would have liked more solid test dates, more material for exam preparation, and more structured lectures. I don't think "everything" is a good way to answer what material will be on the exam. Great class!
Honestly one of the best professors I've had while at SWC. She may appear intimidating at first but she knows what she's talking about. I've taken her for all of my Anth classes and is part of why I changed my major. It's not an easy class but if you study, come to lectures, participate, and do research for any papers, you should pass. Don't slack.
There's never a boring lecture with her. Although I just wished there were more than only exams that she'd grade on from you like quizzes, so it gives you a chance to score more points and maybe get an idea on what will be on the exam. Each exam will be more on the lectures, but there is a good amount on the book.
I really liked this class, but that's only because I'm into medicine/biology. If you are too as well as cross-cultural studies, then this is recommended! There are at least 3 writing assignments, group or alone, at least for the semester I took it in (She wasn't very clear on the scheduling). Only 4 exams, no quizzes which I think is a bummer!
Her lectures are amazing and she is an incredible professor, definitely one of the best classes I have ever taken. This class opens up your perspective and she provides clear real world examples. I don't think its an easy A, since you will need to read and study her lectures a lot. Final Grade: 4 exams and some include a written component
This class was honestly one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken. She was a little intimidating at first but she's actually nice lol. You can get an A if you just put in effort . Read the the textbook and dont skip class! She did end up giving us extra credit which helped a lot! Genuinely sad that the class is over:((
The class was pretty interesting. She makes this mean above everyone attitude at first but is nicer than it seems at first. Her tests are a hit or miss read the textbook and show up to class. At times she will short-sight the issue or topic being discussed so that she's right, somewhat annoying, doesn't happen often. Overall good teacher, does care
I thought I would hate anthropology, especially after signing up for an 8 week course by accident but she was such an excellent professor. She is by far my favorite professor at SWC and I've been there way too long. She comes off as very stern but loosens up quickly, she has excellent/engaging/funny lectures. Go to class, study, and ask questions!!
States early on in the course that the textbook is important, absolutely not true. Her class is insanely lecture heavy and you'll pretty much have to memorize the entire lecture to even get a C. This is essentially a weed-out course and if you, like me, believe that education should be fair, do not take this course.
Lectures are fun and engaging. Challenges your way of thinking to promote new thought. Attendance isn't mandatory, but 1/2 her exam points are based on lectures, which she doesn't post- you do the math! Exam-based grade only. If you're a responsible student, you will pass easily! Tips: Read the textbook, be on time, do the extra credit (trust me)
The lectures are loaded with material which Is covered on the exams. In addition, I would recommend to read the entire textbook because it will help on exams. Times of availability outside of class are convenient and there is a strict attendance policy which is a good thing.
Her class is basically based on lectures and reading the textbook. The tests are hard but the course was so interesting. SHe's scary at first but then you warm up to her. She's great!
Do the extra credit, read the book before the exam, attend every lecture & take notes. You'll get an A. 50% of her exam is from everything in the assigned chapters, 50% is from case study pictures in lectures. Beware, she only announces the test during the class before, although she tries to stick to the syllabus. Test questions can be confusing.
One of the best professor's I've had. Lectures are engaging and social. Be sure to read your book! Your grade is solely tests which are a 50/50 combo. She comes off tough and hard, but opens up as the semester goes on. She's also always available during office hours if you have questions or need her.
If you're a biased person, prepare to be offended. Even if you're an open-minded person, there is bound to be at least one thing that unsettles you, considering the material can be quite graphic. This class isn't meant to destroy your biases, it makes you aware of them, as well as the professor's. Jelaca is an amazing story teller. Great class.
Cultural Anthro is super tough, but Professor Jelacha made it bearable. She is intimidating at first, but becomes hilarious as the semester goes on. The class only consists of 3 tests and a final, so your grade depends on how well you do in those. Your book and notes will be your BEST friends.
The lab was really cool. I got to learn a lot about the human body! You get to work together in groups to complete the lab. Its an easy A. The was teacher was super laid back. I would recommend taking her.
to begin im so grateful to have come across prof. Jelaca who is an intellectual of such vast knowledge, intelligence & life experiences aquired over her lifetime. her lectures reflect her worldliness and great sophistication. She is a true gem and what you learn in her lectures would be impossible to find anywhere else, mind opening and powerful
I have taken two classes with her, medical and cultural anthropology, the classes are difficult but not impossible and every class period is interesting. She makes sure to engage students and have conversations during class instead of just lecturing them. One of my favorite teachers at Southwestern.
Prof. Jelaca is truly a rare gem. She is extremely passionate about her field of study and has many experiences to expand on her knowledge. Her lectures are far from boring if you "turn your mammalian brains on." Must attend lectures as it is vital for your success in the class. Exams only, so take good chapter notes and pay attention to lectures.
She is very passionate about the subject and knows what she's talking about but it is not an easy class. There are no study guides for tests so you should invest time in understanding each chapter clearly. She also gives visual tests which she gives less than 30 seconds to answer. If you are not a dedicated student do not take her class.
You must understand clearly and be precise in order to pass. Although there's no homework, you MUST have the necessary materials (flexible rulers, gloves, simple calculators) or you won't be working with actual human skeletons. If you're late, no doing this. You need to know the "time." You do not want this professor to be angry or pissed. The end.
Professor Jelaca is the sweetest and funniest professor I've ever had. I took her lab course for Fall 2019 and it was great. She's very caring and easy to talk to. She knows everything about Anthropology. Make sure to bring your materials, your gloves and everything else she tells you to. My favorite professor in all my years at this school. :)
She changed my life. One of the best lecturers I've ever had in my life. I switched my major to anthropology because of her. If she reads this, I hope she knows that a lot of my classmates in the lab also changed their majors.
She didnt grade based on attendance, she only graded the 4 exams + whatever extra credit was turned in. She let my class have open book exams, even if you didnt have the physical copy (so you could use laptops or phones during the exam). Overall she was very nice and I loved the class, especially because the textbook was free.
If you are looking for a strict but fair professor for an introductory anthropology course look no further than Professor Jelaca. As long as you are engaged in lecture and don't skip this class you should receive the grade you expect. She makes the class very easy to stay engaged and provides a good amount information to help remember the material.
Professor Jelaca is an amazing professor I learned a lot from her. She is lecture heavy and if you dont study you wont pass so make sure you study. She also gives extra credit so make sure you do them.
Don't take her unless you absolutely need too. No consideration, horrible teacher. Clearly not native speaker with how everything has horrible grammar and spelling errors. Thick accent. Really hard to understand.
Amazing professor and very interesting lectures. She really encourages discussions and is very understanding. I highly recommend her! Everything is in the textbook and you'll pass with no problem if you read the book.
Dr. Browder is better.
If you want a life, don't take her. Hard to understand, gets frustrated and yells a lot. No wonder why people hate her.
Any other professor would have been better than her. Completely not understanding about COVID-19 unlike other professors that have adapted their class to being online. She caused so much stress.
Such interesting lectures! I learned so many new and exciting things. She is nice going and very funny! Use the book and youll do fine. Very understanding about everyones current situation. Please take her!
She may seem weird but she's really cool once you get to know her class dynamic. Parts of her tests are based on the case studies she puts on the lectures. The other part of her test are based on the textbook. She does group tests and pop quizzes. Switching to virtual class, she made zoom conferences optional. Tests were solely based on textbook.
Had her for Spring '20. Fun class lectures & activities, & the class got even easier when we went online. Accent was a little hard for me to understand at times, but she genuinely knew her stuff & cared about our education. Please take her even if you aren't an anthropology major (like me)!
I can understand why some students may not be a fit for her. But she is weird, quirky, and interesting in all the right ways in my opinion. Makes topics engaging and makes you want to learn more. Serious teacher but also funny. You must read to pass! Switched to online during covid and still enjoyed class but was still tough. Good teacher.
Professor Jelaca really shifted towards the textbook after the shift to COVID. However, her lectures were always super interesting and made you think. Her accent can be hard to understand sometimes but I just think that adds to her charm. She's super test heavy and only graded based on 4 exams so be sure to READ that textbook!
Very funny and easy going. Understandably, it was a little difficult to teach the Anth LAB class because none of the material was tangible. However she does encourage everyone to group up and help each other for the weekly quizzes, so that makes it a LOT easier to push through the difficult material. Offers a lot of extra credit. DO IT!
This class is an easy A, although she can be strict at times she strongly encourages group work on the labs (use discord its a life saver) and the labs could be hard sometimes so pay attention to lectures. She also gives out lots of extra credit opportunities with lots of points.
What you read may be different from what you see on test, as there is a slight language barrier, that aside course is clear and we'll put together, I recommend her during intersession class, quick and you will still have time for a vacation.
This teacher deals with real human bones. She doesn't leave homework but print the pages in the modules area for that week before class. She lets you work in groups most of the labs. You have to print your labs before class and turn in it by the end of the class. There is no makeup work so if you skip a class you don't get credit for that lab
This class has literally zero relation to my actual degree, but Professor Jelaca somehow managed to make me genuinely interested in Anthropology, as well as the class. I quickly came to like the class a lot due to how knowledgeable and passionate she is about her subject and how she uses many visuals and hand on examples. (She's also really funny)
I enjoyed her online cultural anthropology course, it wasn't difficult, she has clear grading criteria. She provided lots of cool videos related to the topic, I highly recommend this for a humanities general ed requirement. I do like professor Browder slightly more but both are great. I heard she's tougher in person for lab courses though.
Professor Jelaca Is a pretty straightforward professor and encourages participation. She has a really good sense of humor and does excellent job in comparing certain things to understand the labs better. It did kind of throw me off to print the lab the night before but it is understanding.
Professor Jelaca is very funny and her class was entertaining. If you skip class you might fail and/or get a little lost since she covers a lot of ground in each lecture. Although some of the labs were hard, she gave many extra credit opportunities so it was still possible to recover from bad grades. I recommend taking her for this class!
If you attend every class and pay attention to her lectures, you will pass the class. She is very confident in her work, her lectures are easy to follow and she will always explain further or answer all your questions if you ask. I recommend taking her class!!!
Very easy to follow lectures! On top of that, professor Jelaca was always kind to me during office hours. I learned much about how to study (correctly) and applied knowledge. I will happily take the advice the professor gave me to university.
This class is very lecture heavy and compact with information . She mentions that the tests are based on the textbook and that the lectures are simplifications of the textbook. Examples she gave during the lecture were helpful when looking back . She is very straight up and bold, which I enjoyed and truly made it feel like a college level class.
not bad, u need do extra credit to get an A, or its hard.
Took her for an 8-week course. Many weekly quizzes, but posts the chapters for free. Two midterms and a final exam with miscellaneous assignments, but mostly graded on exams. Easy class, just keep up with the reading.
Jelaca is an amazing professor who is very passionate in her area.
Very quirky, fun, and honest. Her lectures were entertaining and engaging and I was sad if I had to miss a class due to illness. She is very dramatic about the final, it is not that bad. Just try to go to every lab day because they are necessary to pass the class.
Professor Jelaca was a great professor and her lectures always kept students very interested. She did offer extra credit throughout the semester. If you dont show up to class you will probably fail the tests and that is the majority of the overall grade. I have taken 3 of her classes and enjoyed each one!
You need to be at all the classes to pass the labs or even understand the test. I enjoy her class and she can be pretty understanding, the only complaint I have is about how she delivers the lecture. If you expect to take some straightforward notes during lecture days don't exactly count on it. The information she provides though helps a lot though
Leaves passive aggressive comments. Doesn't provide clear enough instructions to the point the whole class is submitting incorrectly. Is VERY strict about providing in text citations but I don't think she has a good understanding of them as many times she left comments about not citing correctly but the citations in text would match her examples.
This class seemed really difficult at first, but as the semester went on it became more enjoyable and easy. Professor Jelaca is an amazing lecturer and she helped me become more interested in anthropology. Each class is worth 20 points so attendance is mandatory, but she does offer extra credit. She is a fair grader and there is only one exam
Professor Jelaca is super fun and genuinely teaches well from the lectures. The class really isn't hard if you show up - which you should REALLY do, since attendance is mandatory. You can't make up any missed labs but she does offer a lot of extra credit opportunities that boost your grade quite a bit. Just show up for the lab work. She's great!
Really good lecturer. Shes really funny but also straightfoward. You can always work with people during the labs, even the final, so it makes things easier.
During lecture of biological anthropology, she goes really fast and you're not allowed to take pictures of the slides but she stopped enforcing that rule by the end of the semester. If we don't have access to the slides, how are we supposed to study for the visual part of the exam?
Lecture notes are the most important notes. Stay a week ahead of the chapter your covering in class. Overall its not a hard class, just be ready to study, study, study. No homework, only scored on tests. She's a great teacher who wants you to succeed in her class. Honestly one of the favorite teachers I've ever had.
there are NO study guides, so take really good notes! she likes to scare you but honestly if you pay attention in class and read the assigned chapters, you'll be fine. only 4 tests in the lecture, but most def extra credit to help. timeline is wonky, so tests are wnv she wants, so stay ready frl. flashcards are ur bestie in this class. i loved her!
WILL BE dealing with real actual human and primate bones so beware. lab is easier than lecture, and more things are graded in this class. extra credit provided, but be ON TOP of your work. very interesting lectures that apply to real life. ask questions when you needed & get a gc for accountability and to double check dates. NO late work ever.
Great Job -Dimitre
It is a difficult course with a lot of information but it is very interesting. I would take this course again by itself because there is a lot of material to cover. If you are really interested in biology, anthropology or medicine this is a great course. In her lab course you will put together a skeleton and be hands with different skeletal parts.
Professor Jelaca brings a fun, engaging style to lectures. While attendance is mandatory, the class isn't too difficult if you keep up. unstuck ai can help prep for exams.
I took this professors lab and am normally an A student. However, she made my life very difficult. She offered extra credit only twice during the entire semester, & during the week & for those of us that have jobs we cant just leave. Her lectures are very intense. Her attitude is also very unwelcoming and stern. I felt very stressed the entire sem.
I really enjoyed taking this class. Lecture is definitely not short but everything is explained well. You can tell she loves anthropology. Take good and detailed notes. I'm a visual learner so little drawings helped a lot. Make sure to memorize the bones. ALWAYS bring gloves and your lab PRINTED out. Cant send labs electronically duh.
I really enjoyed taking her class. Although the lectures were lengthy, they were taught extremely well. She genuinely cares about her students mastering the concepts, so don't hesitate to ask questions. For the labs, just make sure to measure carefully and refer to your lecture notes. Overall, an amazing professor!
I enjoyed taking this class. The lectures were detailed and interesting. I almost switched my major to anthropology. She is hilarious in a dry humor way; I loved her mysterious aura lol. Attendance is definitely mandatory as slides are posted to Canvas. Take detailed notes.
The professor is very strict. She's pretty funny, though, and even though she's strict, she is fair. You can tell she is passionate about what she teaches. I can't emphasize enough: do not miss any lectures; even missing one will affect you a lot. If you show up to every class, you'll be good.
To people that say her class is hard they're clearly not paying attention and don't go to class. She left NO HOMEWORK. Just prepare for labs by reading. Just pay attention in class and take good notes. She might seem serious and intimidating but she's actually really funny and I would love to take this class again!
I wouldn't recommend she speak fast also she gives 0 not only me all students
I loved her class i learned so much about everything going on in our every day life. She is very funny and involved in her subject. You do have two versions of testing a Visual and a Written portion. I would recommend everyone to just pay attention write notes and do your practice exams at home provided by her. Overall interesting and informative.
One of the best down to earth teacher I have ever had.
I took her bio-anthro course not realizing I had already had her for cultural-anthro online a few yrs back! Her lectures are knowledgeable, genuinely funny, and very engaging. She's one of my favorite professors, and I am very lucky to have been her student twice.
Dr. Maria will teach you things you will carry with you for a long long time. Some chapters are dry but she recognizes them and does her best to make it relatable for her students.
I received so many zeros cause her instructions are the most complicated thing. super random and unorganized.
She is extremely tough with grading especially discussion posts. Also somewhat passive aggressive when responding to emails. I really enjoy Anthropology but she has definitely made the class really difficult to enjoy.
gives zeroes over the littlest things, like citing sources in a specific way when everything else was done correctly, that can't even be fixed after she grades them. i understand taking points off for it but a whole failing grade was unnecessary and gave me more stress than what was worth, and all it ended up doing was make me less interested.
Professor Jelaca is an incredible teacher for Cultural Anthro. Her class is completely graded on tests based on her lectures. There's also written portions that you work on with a group. Very easy class, just try to pay attention a little to the lectures.
She can go on long tangents not strictly related to the course but she is funny. She only grades based on midterms and final which are 50% multiple choice tests and 50% writing an abstract in class as a group project. No homework and attendance is not mandatory. Easy class
