Most of her lectures were irrelevant to the class, but still somewhat interesting. The name of the course however has little to do with it's content.
Very hard to understand what she expects out of students
No Comments
Important to reiterate due dates, but the nature of her instructions leave so much room for personal creativity. Making the connection between the lecture, book, and you is the most important part of the class! You get what you work for!
I took her last spring. Once I got her teaching method down, she was a piece of cake. I gained so much insight in her class. She was great.
Excellent Instructor. While at first you might not understand her lectures, they DO connect. Ask a lot of questions. She is VERY helpful. You can't pass this class without good communication with her, in the classroom, and during her office hours.
Nice lady, friendly and funny. However, her lectures have little to do with the textbook. Much of the material she teaches as "fact" is scientifically unproven or only theory. Some of her lectures sounded like the Art Bell stuff (aliens, bad &qu
Psychology? No. Her lectures have nothing to do with psychology. This is the life story of Mrs. Lopez.
Man, this woman really does live in a world of her own; I've known her to dismiss actual testimony by minority groups as "common stereostypes" because they didn't agree with her own opinions. She has her own ideas about how the world is and refuses to acknowledge anything that contradicts that.
TALKS TOO MUCH ABOUT ENCHILADAS AND CUCARACHAS!! ITS BEASICALLY HER LIFE STORY, BUT SHE CONNECTS IT TO THE LESSON!!!
the biggg enchilada! woman is crazy, she talks soooo much about random stuff. like... lobster dinners and her days as a student in other countries!! ha ha. so far, so good... lets hope she gets to the point someday!! LOL
Crazy lady who tell stories for her classes to pull the meennig out of and annalys

i see all the bad comments that must mean that you dont understand her teaching method and you got a bad grade get over yourself!!!
i kinda had a hard time gettin' the "whole enchilada" in her class. *wink*wink* but she is a really interesting person to listen to.
I had a hard time understanding the lectures through her thick accent (which I understand isn't her fault, but it still makes the class harder) I also felt like she didn't call on me in class because she knew I'd disagree with her.

This lady is a bit crazy. I never really understood anything in her class she just talked about her life the whole semester but it was cake. Watch out for those crazy cookarachas. You will know exactly what im talking about if you take any of her classes:)
her ex husband is a cucaracha... don't order lobster if you are a student and you are in a casino restaurant with her... don't sneak out of a convent church school to go to a club because she'll rat you out... oh! and be careful if you are in hawaii and yo
If you are ever thinking of have her as a teacher. DON'T!!!!! I've never had a worst teacher in college. She is very hard to understand and she never agrees with anyones comments. She also makes the class feel really stupid and she always brags about how much smarter she is than us because she has a masters in Psyc.
She does not lecture on the subject of study but instead believes we all need "life lessons" based on what she did as she was growing up. I generally ignore this teacher while in class.
This class was the biggest waste of my time.... I didn't learn one concept, i never open my book once, but i stil manage to get an "A". that is just not right
NE one who doesn't like her is because they have no motivation to make positive change in their life!
For all those who thinks she's a bad teacher that is only because you're trying to get a grade...If you want to learn..Open a book, read what is assigned and learn for yourself...then you will know what her stories mean. Yeah she has an accent, but she can be understood perfectly. She's not putting you down dumb asses...She's Challenging You!...So go out and make something of yourself instead of making excuses why YOU didn't learn anything...You students that didn't get anything from the course are lame!
If you have no olther choice, then i would go with Mrs. Lopez
Ms. Lopez is a divorced, aging and very angry woman. She spent a good portion of the semester talking about all the things her ex husband did wrong. Don't even think about questioning her. She's very closed minded and not open to any world view, but her own. If you don't question her, it's an easy A, but really, just a total waste of time.
So this teacher is amazing, you cant go in there with a closed mind, all her test are open book and take home, with about a week to do each one. She wants to know what you think, but if you think you know EVERYTHING she will shut you up in a second. SHes doesn't teach from the book, she knows her****. Take her for the easy A and cheep knowledge!
She's not a good teacher at all. For most of the class, she talked about her own life/quantam, neither of which had anything to do with the class itself. I don't feel like I learned anything in this class. If you have to take a psychology class, please don't take one with Lopez.
I took her this past summer and although she has an extremely different way of teaching, one can learn a lot from her.The class itself was pretty easy. There was never any homework assignments, besides the reading. The tests werent so bad if you payed attention to her stories in class. Overall, she is a very accomplished woman and a great storyteller
What is it? This instructor is a ditraction in her own classroom. She talks about her self as if she is a God or a self actulized person and she cant even speak english well. She might make a great Spanish teacher if you could simply SHUT HER UP about political science subjects. Everyhing she preaches about is political and she claims to have been
I did not learn anything in this class. She can barely speak English and does not teach from the text. She tells stories of things that should relate to phych, and expects the studnts to relate that to brain structues. Stay away if you want to learn or get a good grade!
I enjoyed being in this class. Many people say that she tells a lot of stories but all you have to do is listen. Night classes are a lot of fun. No homework assignments. Tests were take home essays... Really easy... Loved this class
professor lopez wants her her students to be the best they can be so she can be difficult......she tells her life stories to help us link them to what we read in the text......she is not at all like most teachers so if u want the multiple choice tests rather than essays dont take her.
Let's see where do i sart. will for one she is the best instructor i ever had. Her essay are alot of writng but are easy. She may bla bla bla to much but she does know how to teach and peeps if she was such a bad instructor she wouldn't be teaching or wouldn't have her masters. i highly recommend M.Lopez take her and u wouldn't regret it.
this class is not a class where miss Lopez teaches you psychology, its a class where you observe a crazy delusional person who believes they are self actualized for a semester. i have a sneaking suspicion a majority of her stories are lies she made up. im sure the only people who get her "teaching style" are the fat middle aged white women.
She is crazy!!!! I learned nothing in this class. She is a terrible teacher who talks about her life the whole time. If you want to learn anything about psychology don't take her class. Find a different instructor. "Okay young people, the whole enchilada" You will definetly be sick of these phrases by the end of the semester.
I could not understand her style of teaching at all. She was constantly talking about herself and her world. She used blackboard for assignments that seemed very unreasonable. Stay away from this professor if at all possible.
this teacher is one of the craziest teachers iv had all my life.i have no idea that when i signed for this class i was really signing up for an old woman to just go on and on about her ex husband. i learned absolutly nutin. shes a nice lady but if u wanna pass dnt take her class. her essays are nearly impossible to pass.
This was an online class. She is the worst instructor ever. She ended up changing the date that one of our assig. was due, and deleted the information for it. When I went to complete it, I had2 ask another classmate what the assigment was. She is extremely rude and unhelpful. Never take this instructor.
she is just so self centered and all she does is talk about her life instead of teaching
Have to agree with the majority of the posts - not a good teacher. She's smart & nice enough, but she throws out very little psychology. She basically just takes advantage of having a captive audience & talks about herself. I think she's unhappy in her life & uses the class as an outlet for her frustrations.
This is the "WORST TEACHER"I have run into at MSJC. She can't speak English or Spanish (illiterate in 2 languages) can not write or speak coherently. Does her grading emotional subjective opinion, does not use a grading formula. Teaches a ONLINE PSYCHOLOGY class and is computer illiterate. She couldn't show the review board how she grades.
For all of those who think Mrs. Lopez is crazy, they just don't get it. Just wait a couple of years, and when you are mature enough, take her class again. She tells life stories that relate to Psychology of Gender. It is in our lives everyday. I got an A.
This teacher just makes up stories as she goes along. When I challeged my grade she couldnt show the board how she grades papers. Ended up with a B only because I challanged her!
nice lady.. very helpful. tells lots of storys related to the subject. but we have a lot of notes!!! but other then that great teacher!!! :)
I agree with many posts...somewhat. She DOES only talk about her life stories & most of the time, she forgets to explain how it connects with pyschology...but it is an easy class. Mainly summaries that you can do straight out of the book & I only showed up to class the first month & passed with a B.
She's very unorthodox-which frustrates some students. I had no problems with her class because I'm pretty unorthodox myself. The only thing I couldn't stand was that she was a little bit of a drama queen-other than that, all was well.
The material covered in the class was really interesting. However, Professor Lopez teaching method, or lack of one, was very frustrating. Specifically, she was vague; the syllabus, lectures, and other communication were full of grammatical errors and contradictory information.
out of my entire first semester, this class was the one i hated the most. not only did i have to get up extremely early to get there, but this teacher didnt teach at all. her story telling never made sense, she was unclear on subject matter, very very vague in her teaching and unheplful as all get out. If i were you i wouldnt take this class...
I finished without learning even what the definition of Psychology is, however i still passed, i only went for the first few class meets, and ever went again. " Ok young people, heres the enchilada". she claims to be making a connection with the text through stories, but how can we make a connection, without being taught the book? DONT TAKE
The only people her get her, or leave good reviews are fat middle aged women who constantly bring stories of their kids or experiences into class discussion. It has nothing to due with maturity. Its just a connection between old people of not learning just talking all class about made up stories. Young students with potential will learn nothing.
This is, by far, the worst professor I have ever had. She rambles on without even touching on the designated subjects. She never gives any feedback on her essay tests and she requires a 3 page summary of the chapter every week. She does this so she doesn't have to actually talk about anything remotely related to psychology. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!
I am surprised to see so many negative comments. Ms. Lopez is not an easy teacher, but a lot of the subjects she touches on are very insightful and if you use your brain and try to be abstract you can see that you are really lucky to get a prof. like her. Most are by the book and although you slide by with a good grade you dont learn anything REAL.
WORST INSTRUCTOR IN THE WORLD!!!! Do not take her class. She only talks about herself and her ex husband. There is not enough room to type everything here. Take my word and those already written here. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!! You will regret it if you do.
WORST INSTRUCTOR EVER!!!! this crazy lady does NOT teach she talk about her and her ex and her and her ex and race and thats it. Then gives you essay's and grades them on totally different standards she is as CRAZY as they come!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER AT ALL SHE IS CRAZY AS CRAZY CAN BE
It's funny to read these comments, she is actually a very easy teacher if you show up and follow instructions, it's very simple if you read the chapter, her stories are all connected to life, I will agree she does go on about her ex and does not touch the book but her class is not hard at all.
Mrs. Lopez is by far the worst teacher pi have come across at Mt. San Jacinto College, and i have come across some pretty bad ones. Her hour and twenty minute lectures stories of her fantasy life that she basically makes up on the spot. Sh claimed to have formally been in the C.I.A, No HW, just tests on her life stories.
Worst instructor ever! Don't take her class! If you do you'll regret it. You have been warned.
A very nice teacher, she attempts to teach students psychology by explaining it in the context of her life experiences. Unfortuantely this is not very easy for a lot of students to follow and many of them get lost. Be prepared to rely a lot on the textbook. Tests are easy. One of the most highly educated Professors at MSJC.
Mrs. Lopez's Psychology class was my first college class I took. I took her for summer of 2008 and she was really awesome. I don't understand why people are complaining about her. She's actually very easy. I mean EASY! Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine. People are just mad cause they didn't get the grade they wanted.
Don't take Prof. Lopez. I had to drop it because I couldn't even understand what she was talking about or how her story mattered to the class.
I am shocked that this woman still has a job at MSJC. I took psych 101 with her many, many moons ago, and I will never forget just how inane and useless her "teaching" was.
Very easy..hard to understand. She is absolutley nuts and its a joke that she is allowed to teach. Be prepared to learn intro to psychology by yourself.
AVOID. The only people who appreciate this prof are adult returning students who want to share anecdotes. Lopez, if she knows anything about psychology did not show it, instead told personal stories about a life she wished she was living, one where she is the smartest, wittiest person she knows. REAL STUDENTS will not appreciate this waste of time.
Easy as pie but not worth the headache. yikes, she is nuts. if you want to sit and listen to fairytales, take her. you will learn about how she single handedly inspired cesar chavez and obama; ran in the cia, and is working towards sainthood apparantly. no one has a higher self-love than her. she uses the classroom as a free thereapy session. ugh.
All I learned from Ms. Lopez is that "Lunch is not a date". That's BS. I had to teach myself everything from the textbook, which isn't the point of the class. I signed up for a teacher, not an online class. I passed the class but I don't remember learning anything. DONT TAKE!
She tries to relate pyschology to your life, so she uses her own as example. She makes us actually think instead of memorizing the book. i'd definitly love a person like that in life. I'd take her class again.
Very frustrating. Strange way of teaching, it's like a puzzle you must put together before you can complete assignment. Assignments are not clear, at all! Worst online class I've ever taken. I have a 3.87 GPA and 30 credits to date; it will probably go down after this class. Do regret choosing this professor.
Some of the comments say that only older, middle aged white women would like her. I am older, middleaged, white woman and I hated the class. One person in the class shared a different pov and lopez told her she was stupid. Class began with 60 people, ended with 10. If you take psych, take Schmidt, he's great. The woman is nuts!
This teacher barely speaks English, while telling long, drawn out stories about her personal life, and how she divorce her husband because she was supposedly too intellectual for him, which usually involve juvenile moral lessons, and vaguely relate to any subject matter from the book. Remarkably ineffective teaching method. You will learn nothing
DO NOT TAKE this teacher, even if she is your last option! It is an outrage that this teacher still has a job at MSJC. She does not teach anything of substance, she is unopen to criticism, she will waste your time and your money.
I would not recommend this instructor to any of my fellow colleagues. Her class has no structure or any kind of foundation. She is also slow at checking any of her e-mail and getting back to her students. I have taken a lot of online classes before her. She is the most unhelpful and the worst teacher I've ever had.
"what is it?" She states this over and over every class session. Wouldn't recommend Ms. Lopez because most students are to expect a professor that ACTUALLY uses some of her lectures based on the textbook. Ms Lopez doesnt, she rather talk about her past her ex husband and all the past experiences she has encountered. Not a recommendable proffesor
A very different teaching style. Can literally feel your mental growth as you get further in class. Easy A, lots of stories, easy assignments, extra credits, and by the way read the chapters yourself. She never ever opened book in class. All verbal class, interesting discussions and good learnings at the end of semester.
Everyone warned me and i didn't listen i dropped the class because all these people were right and she sucks... DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
She is Easy, but you have to sit there and listen to her talk about her life experiences and her EX... And then connect her life to psyc, Be prepare to learn Psyc on your own!
Her teaching style: Go read chapter X. Here are some questions. Go read chapter X. Here are some more questions. Here is exam. Rinse and repeat. If you like to learn and not just told to read a book, dont take this class.
HORRIBLE! This was not a PSYC course but rather a creative poetry writing course. Her assignments are unclear. I have a 4.0 grade average which I want to keep, so I dropped the class. I should have known better after reading all the horror stories on this site about her, but I thought it might be different as an online class. Trust me, it?s not.
she is an awesome teacher .. yes she talkes about her ex.. but people who don't realize something all her stories are not just stories.... they tie into the lessons you just have to listen!!! i like her classes and would take her again !!!!!
Psychs real interesting and the book she uses is great. Tells life stories all class long that she ties into her lectures. As long as you read the book you'll do fine. Super easy class. There's only three take home essay tests. But you don't learn too much.
totally unqualified to be teaching. Creates nothing but confusion. Sad to know good teacher don't have a job, while tards like this have tenor.
Some of her stories are interesting they relate to psychology but, I didn't learn anything about what was on the test! I feel like it is a teachers job to teach what he or she is testing you on especially when test grades mean so much. I'm taking another Psych 101 class because I didn't learn. My grade is an B+.
Mrs. Lopez is a great instructor. I highly recommend her. She is easy going, & is willing to answer student's questions. The student's responsibility is to read the chapters ahead of time, so that when she gives lecture student's can apply it to the classes point of topic. I have taken Mrs. Lopez two semesters in a row. First psych 101 & then 104.
I took Mrs. Lopez two semesters in a row for psych 101 & 101, because I enjoyed her class so much. She is very professional, encourages her students, & is demonstrates alot of interest in their points of view. Her stories make Psych easier to understand the whole concept. Anyone who pays attention will defenetely learn & appreciate her lectures.
She needs to work on her English because you can barley understand what she is saying. She doesn't teach you anything except she hates her ex boyfriends and she used to be skinny. She doesn't use the book and doesn't lecture you on any class material and then all of a sudden you have a test on psychology and all you have been learning about is her
Worst teacher i have ever had in my life. doesnt teach you anything just tells stories then tests you on psychological theory when she cant even explain it herself.
doesn't teach you anything!!!! not kidding do not take her class!!!! stupidest person in the world and you cant understadn her!!
worst teacher ever! you dont learn anything
Very poor quality teacher. I would HIGHLY recommend anyone that actually wants to learn something or get anything out of this class, DO NOT take her.
Good person, but poor Professor. Constantly tells stories of her life (and constantly tries to justify them to you throughout the semester) and covers next to nothing of the written material or what you're actually tested on. Definitely a class where you must teach yourself from start to finish.
Ms. Lopez is a wonderful teacher. Yes she is hard to understand at times & she does tell a lot of stories about her life. However, if you read the book as you go along you will understand how her stories apply to what chapter is about. Her stories are interesting and it makes the class fun to be in. The tests were really easy. I got an A overall.
Very good teacher! I received an A. She does tell stories but if you read the chapter you will realize that the stories correspond with the chapter. The stories are examples of the theories and concepts in Psychology. If you listen and read it will be easy. Good teacher.
Very good class. showed up, listened + learned, and got an A never even really had to look at the text book if u listened. You can tell she is a smart, educated, independent, women.
Took a full term on-campus class. She is confusing. I could not understand her or how her stories related to the class. One session we drew pictures of brains with crayons and they were put on the wall. No structure, no interest, no learning. Will definitely retake this class with a better professor.
She is a very nice person, but she writes her own tests and expects you to know her definition of a term. On top of that if you ask for help and she briefly covered it a past day, she will refuse to help you because "You should already know it" On top of that it has been 2 weeks since I took my final, and I still haven't received a final grade.
I advise everyone to double think before going into Maria's class. I took her class and I was miserable. I know a few other students who also took her class and failed. Thankfully I dropped her class before I could fail. She isn't helpful with anything, I didn't learn anything while listening to her babble on about her entire life. Very Annoying.
worst teacher youll ever take promise you she wont teach you a thing
Mrs. Lopez is probably one of the worst teachers I've ever heard. I was really excited about taking psychology but I can honestly say I didn't learn a single thing in her class. She's completely unclear and doesn't use class time to teach, the tests have nothing to do with her lectures. It's pointless to even attend.
Would not recommend! Unclear and self-centered. Becomes increasingly frustrated/angry when students ask for clarification or don't understand, making classroom a hostile environment if you do anything other than smile and nod. If you have or had a bad experience, please report her! Nothing will happen if no one else knows.
Took her class last spring and all i have to say is BUY AND READ THAT BOOK. That is the only way I passed her class. She does not do a good job of covering the material that is going to be on the test. You pretty much have to teach yourself.
She is not a bad person at all. Just needs a little more teaching skills. Gets frustrated when students ask how her stories are related to the chapter. (I still have no clue what being a body guard for Cesar Chavez has to do with an eyeball) But she teaches you not to rely on a teacher to learn but teach yourself.
She is the worst teacher I've ever had next to Richard leitz the chemistry teacher. Wow she's no help, unclear, all she does is sit on a stool and tell stories. You'll be sorry if u take her
She covers no material from book & no terms, might as well be an online class where u teach yourself! The tests are a joke, confusing to follow and not multiple choice! Her so called examples (which are just stories) that she gives, don't tie into anything! She thinks she's doing us a favor by teaching this way, but she's only confusing us!
She did nothing but sit around and tell stories about herself, most of which seemed ridiculous and fabricated. Her tests had absolutely nothing to do with what she lectured on in class, mainly because she did not talk about psychology.
Not the worse class I have taken, but wasnt my favorite. Had to drop out of honors into the regular section to avoid failing, and I felt it was easier. Just remember maria lopez is an older gal, so if you do end up in her class, treat her with respect and you could make it out of there alright. good luck. your about to bite into a big enchilada lol
She is very snobbish, and doesn't teach the class but uses the class as a therapy session for a bad life shes had. She's very vague in her explainations and you'll get a bad grade unless you agree with her and nod your head while trying to be her pet. Very anti social.I can see why not many people talk to her.
This class was easy for me because at the beginning of class she explained that I needed to read the material before class to make correlations with the stories to have a scenario and context for the concepts. She also assigned an aplia to increase potential learning. Effort and motivation are needed in this class. She is an amazing teacher.
Online class was very unorganized. You will pass if you continue to turn in the work regardless... Hardly any communication between students and teacher. Left to teach yourself basically.
Man, where to begin? Her "lectures" are story time, she doesn't finish her scentences so you have to figure out how they end, and she won't even fully explain how her stories tie into the lesson!!
Smart students know that in order to pass any transferable class, it is important to READ. You just need common sense and analysis skills to apply examples to theory. Respect her, and you will be fine! Look for her in her office hours. Every professor likes that!
The class is taught through stories that have a deep meaning designed to inspire analysis skills. Read the chapters before class and the meaning is there. Creativity is the key to success and also paying attention is key. Extra credit is an option and there are plenty of workshops to learn more in-depth than just passing the class.
Her lectures consist of stories. Some stories are easy to relate to the textbook, others do not make any sense at all. She does give study guides for exams and you can use study guide during exam. So if you do that, the class is easy.
Ms.Lopez is an interesting teacher who enjoys the dynamics of the courses she instructs. She teaches through stories of her life so you can correlate the subjects taught to the stories. The book is a lot of help when correlating, I highly recommend reading the chapter before class. Her class is overall challenging, but very enjoyable.
horrible teacher she complains about her stories her life is too crazy that i wonder if it is the truth or just to relate the book. Her students have complain before and try to get rid of her she should retired do not take her not worth the GPA to fall.
Took this class in the summer and loved every day of it! Although you might believe that 6 weeks isn't a lot of time, Ms. Lopez knows this. She loves to answer questions and relates them to stories that make you think. Don't listen to the other comments about her blabbing all the time. Enter the class with an open mind and you will enjoy it.
Bad teacher is bad. Don't take her. Horrible accent and story's all day.
Best teacher I've ever had. Her stories completely relate to the class, but do not take if you don't have a creative mind and don't like a narrative learning environment. She really influenced my life for the better.
Maria is a nice woman & tells stories to teach her students about life & how to be a good person. However, her teaching style is awful. She is very unorganized and hardly touches on the subject matter. She also wants her students to think so outside of the box it's illogical. Take her if you want to learn about life and don't care about you're GPA.
Ms Lopez is a great professor. And she deserves respect for her profession. Her class is a learning experience.
I understand how this class might be bearable if you are an auditory learner, but if you aren't, and want to learn about psychology and not about the professor's life, then I would suggest not taking this class. You need to read, read, read Also, you need to be VERY aware that her tests will NOT contain similar wording as what is in your textbook.
This is one of those teachers that demands perfect attendance, but will waste your time while you're in class. She attempts to teach through life stories, but her stories never connect to the lesson. I learned more about her ex husband than psychology. Also, she told our class not to complain about her teaching because she has "connections."
Although Ms. Lopez does teach through stories, I really enjoyed taking her class a year ago. I'm not a big studier nor do I like reading textbooks, but I still managed to get an A. She gave study guides for the Tests, and allowed 1 page of notes to be used on tests. I made jokes in my short and long answers on my tests, which she LOVED (hint).
She's smart and knows her material. Unfortunately her lectures aren't really lectures there life stories that you have to connect with the theories. The textbooks that she suggests is great and full of information. I just wish she gave real lectures. If your not a reader don't take this class!!!
She has a thick accent, so I was really worried the first few weeks of class, but her class actually so easy! She lets you use your notes on tests & you get an extra 20pts for it. I would just show up to take quizzes (credit, no credit depending on if you show up) & tests. She tells a lot of life stories, but I zone out most of the time.
good teacher. teaches by telling stories and accosiated them with the book
such a sweet and interesting lady I want to be friends with her fortunately as a professor though she is not so great. She spends most of the class telling story's (that really don't connect with nor teach any material)and the other better part of the class defending her bad rate my professor scores. But if you read the book and it's an easy A
Ms. Lopez is an amazing person and an excellent teacher. Many people on here have complained about her tendency to tell stories in class, but those are all the students who were unable to draw comparisons between her stories and the class itself. She is delightful to talk to during office hours and I still do every chance I get.
Wonderful professor! I had already registered into her class before checking out "rate my professor". When I saw the rude remarks it scared me. I decided to join anyways & see how it goes. She proved them WRONG! I LOVE her teaching method. She uses life examplestories relating to the subject of Psychology. I also enjoy her sense of humor. :)
Such an amazing instructor. She knows her stuff. I highly recommend her.
One of the WORST teachers Ive had here at MSJC. Her accent is so thick that she is hard to understand. She does not care about your opinion and if you say something she doesnt like shell basically make you feel like an idiot. She does not give an appropriate amount of time to write essays. She gives the prompt the same day its due. Do not take her.
Professor Lopez is a great professor, but understand that she teaches through lecture. You are expected to have read the text before class, and participate in class, because that's the structure of her classes. I have always learned a lot from Professor Lopez, and have taken away great meanings in all her lectures she always drops gold nuggets.
Here's the thing about this class. It's less of a psychology class than it is a life class. But that is a really great thing. In order to really understand the material, you need to read the book because her lectures dont always correlate clearly with the material. But she is an inspirational person and has a lot of wisdom and life lessons to share
This teacher is amazing. She teaches primarily through lectures, and many of them are life stories, but I thoroughly enjoy them. Important aspects she'll emphasize though and you can expect them to be on the essays and exams. You can take in 4 pages of notes on quizzes. If you don't pass this class with a B or higher you shouldn't be in college.
Lectures can get a little confusing at times but as long as you read the chapters assigned and do all assignments you should be good.
One must teach themselves about psychology since this professor goes off topic with her life stories. Not that the life stories are bad as one can take the wisdom but one could have spent the entire time studying through the chapter on their own. One has to be open minded and have patience for this class. She lecture's through her life stories....
I feel bad writing anything negative about her because she is one of the nicest professors I have ever had, but you are pretty much on your own throughout the whole class because the actual class time she spends just talking about her life. If you are the type that learns by just reading, it might not be a bad idea to take her.
There's so many negative comments about her. Everyone says she talks more about her life than actually teaching but if you were to actually pay attention and use your brain you would see that every story she has to tell is to give you a real life experience that relates to the lecture that shes teaching at that moment. She's an amazing professor.
I genuinely don't understand the low score for this professor. She does teach from real life, but only in reference to the material which will better your understanding of the lectures. There's some mildly heavy paperwork, but she's very accessible for students who have problems or concerns. Good discussions. Taking her again, happily.
Yes, she does teach through lectures and you will definitely have to read the book, but you should be doing that anyways since it is a college class. Her stories are helpful to connect to Psychology and as a life lesson. She also frequently offers extra credit on her quizzes and is fair when it comes to our papers. I'd definitely take her again.
Ms. Lopez ia a great teacher. Her stories are funny and relate to the topic she is teaching. If your messing around in class she will call you out so be a grown up and study the material and listen to her lectures. All her tests are even based exactly on the quizzes which your allowed to use notes and your book.
Mrs. Lopez teaches from her lectures and textbook. But she also gives a lot of stories and theory examples, the test at the end of the modules are based on what she SAID during lecture and less on the textbook. Grading is clear and she gives extra credit to help you out. Just don't take advantage or lie, she is a psychologist after all.
Professor Lopez is one of the best professors I've ever had! She really cares about her students, and her lectures are very engaging. She's very knowledgeable of the content, and her grading scale is very straightforward. Her tests are straight out of the textbook with some questions based on her lectures. She's tough, but very caring.
Her assignments and her speaking are both unclear. She talks a lot about herself and you better take notes on it because she will test you on her own self.
All she does is tell stories about her life. You have to learn everything on your own. Her assignments and speaking are unclear and when you ask for more details or a better explanation she ignores your emails or tells you to look on black board if you ask in person. Her tests are ridiculous they are either about her or nothing abt what you learn.
Horrible teacher. Did not learn one thing about psychology which is obviously what I signed up for. All she speaks of is her stories but they don't make sense. You're on your own in this course. Wouldn't recommend.
Many classes that all she did was talk about her personal life, in a way that was not related to the topics needed for upcoming tests. I absolutely do not recommend her!
omg! this professor is everywhere honestly. sorry that i have to admit this but if you want to learn about her personal life take this class. i did not understand the concept of psychology what so ever. her tests did not make sense. the projects you had to do were useless.
She doesn't really teach, the whole class period she only talks about her personal life and claims that she's relating it to the theories in the book. You really have to teach yourself.
This is a woman that is genuinely interested in helping her students grow. The lectures and life stories that she incorporates into her teaching are rich. She's very blunt. Real. Easy class to take if you follow directions and read the material. Very straightforward grading. Kept Blackboard updated well. Loved the Eagles & Cucaracha metaphors.
She is a wonderful Professor and Psychologist who cares and is trying to open your eyes and prepare you for more difficult college life. She is heavy on the lecture stories that all tie into the teaching material at some point. Keep an open mind and be ready do your reading and note taking and you can very much enjoy her class and get an A.
I really do not understand the low scores for this teacher. She is a really great teacher! She is very easy to understand and she connects her personal life stories with the concepts of psychology 101. She entertains the class and gives great notes. All you really have to do is participate. She is also very honest. Would take this class again!
The wisest person I've ever met. She test in a way where you must learn and understand the materials. Its hard if you don't understand or make sense of the concept. Her class is not for the faint of heart. If your not willing to learn or be open minded about the way she teach then this class isn't for you. A very inspirational person.
You can do everything right in this class and she will grade you poorly. I dropped her class because her grading is unreasonable. Her lecture is not helpful and her test contradicts itself. Never ever receive our test back. Most people fail not because they didn't try in her class its because shes a horrible instructor! Poor teaching & instruction!
Mrs. Lopez is not a fair grader, sad to say. The connections she wants you to make with her stories that "relate" to psychology are very vague and confusing to both myself and my classmates. You need to know Spanish to take this class, since Ms. Lopez uses a lot of illustrations using words in Spanish. Mrs. Lopez's class is one you shouldn't take.
If more than 1 student is complaining than the problem is obviously her. She is a tough grader and grade unfairly. She have unrealistic expectations. Her lectures and her journals are pointless!! Avoid taking her you will drop, fail or regret it! Not a good professor!
Horrible
Do not take this professor if you care about your GPA. You will learn more about her ex than psychology. I wish I would've listen to all the bad reviews posted here about professor lopez.
This professor gives you a 10 page essay and expects it done in a week. The instructions are really confusing. She does a poor job teaching. I would not recommend her to any students who's taking psychology. Pick another professor!
Harsh grader & poor lectures.
This lady spend the entire semester talking about her life and mostly of her ex bf when student starts to fail she spend the rest of the semester justifying what a great professor she is and that its all the students fault and how it has nothing to do with her. It has EVERYTHING to do with her. She suck at teaching!!
She tells really interesting stories that are easy to understand if you read the textbook before coming to class! You have to study the different psychological theories and know them to understand what she's saying but it's not difficult to do. She's so helpful and loves seeing her students succeed! I'm so glad I took her despite the bad reviews!!
This was the worse I had to drop because i had no idea of what she was teaching. All she talked about was her life. The test didn't make since I've never had a test like it bonfire in my entire life.. if you want to pass I would not recommend her..
Her instructions are very confusing I couldn't understand anything she said because of her heavy Spanish Accent she does not teach at all you'll be better off reading the book by yourself rather than learning in her class plus you'll fall asleep from her stories zzzzz
She has a very strong accent but other than that she pretty much helps you review for the quiz and exams. She tells really interesting stories that are easy to understand if you read the textbook before coming to class! My advise would be to bring a digital recorder to her class because her lectures are on the test and the youtube videos.
She's a very sweet woman but when it comes to her class, she's very auditory and doesn't rely on the slides. I think what messes up alot of people taking her class is that they're so used to slideshows for notes because she teaches VERBALLY. If you fail one of the essays, your grade will NOT recover. Take this class if you can learn by listening.
My class had 5 assignments and 3 tests for the whole semester. Her lectures are hard to understand, she expects students to make connections on vague info. Her lectures are life stories not from the textbook. Mrs than half of my class dropped her. She is nice but I didnt learn anything from her. I relied on the internet to pass her class.
Why did I not know about rate my professor along time ago. I took Lopez thinking I would pass the class. She seemed like a nice character, but when It comes down to her teaching it was a total opposite.
Since the bad reviews are all similar, here's a few tips. Don't expect to learn but try to pass. Stroke her ego by relating personal stories and relate them to the essays, so take notes. Read her power points on the chapters being tested. I failed one of the tests because I only read the book. She will give credit for all the little work she gives.
This class was very challenging. She teaches through her life stories, which makes sense as long as you read or knew what theory she was trying to correlate her story. If you are a reader, then this is the class for you. She grades very harshly when it comes to papers, so make sure you do really well on the tests. Trust me, that's how I passed.
When I stumbled on this site today I immediately had to look up Mrs Lopez. Her Psych 101 (2003) to this day is the absolute worst class I have ever had to sit through. I've never been less interested in someones life story. Thats what every single class time consisted of.. her life story. The only reason I passed was studying the book alone.
If you're majoring in Mrs. Lopez's life then this class is for you. If you're hoping to be taught anything at all you might want to find another professor. Mrs. Lopez swears she is the most interesting woman in the world (She's not). However, she is thirsty for validation so if you're fine reading the book and stoking her ego this class might work
She was sooo sweet! But tbh I can barley understand her! She has a accent so beware. Overall she is a great lady but her class is not easy . Lots of writing and homework(busy work in my opinion). So if your looking for a easy a this class is not it!
She talked a lot about her life but I honestly thought her tests were all easy.
I honestly don't know what previous students have a problem with. This is one my favorite classes. Tests are bit difficult for not hard, concepts aren't hard either to grasp because she uses real life situations. She is bold compared to other professors. Would 110% take again.
Nope would not recommend to anyone
I recommend you Do NOT take Psychology with Maria Lopez. Fair warning
Only talks about herself goes completely off topic you just have to read the book on your own if you expect to learn anything. She grades based off random assignments.
Ms. Lopezs psych 101 class was the first class I ever took at MSJC, I was only 17 years old. I loved her class and found it so interesting. She is a unique and amazing instructor. If you attend class and apply yourself you should have no problem passing. By far the best instructor at MSJC.
Very funny, but she does spend most of her time telling stories from her life. They do relate to the class, but rarely went through actual lecture on the subject because she spends so much time storytelling. If you have background in psych, you'll definitely pass but otherwise you may have to teach yourself a lot. Has few and random assignments.
I swear this instructor actually thinks everyone she's ever met is jealous of her life and takes every opportunity to tell mundane stories about it. If the stories are actually meant to be connected to her subject matter then it's done so poorly in my opinion. Very difficult class to sit through. Would not recommend.
I took her for two classes so far but Im not sure what happened this semester... Everything was a mess and my grade was not released until 2 weeks after this semester was completed. Emailed/talked to her about grading specific assignments but she lacked. Overall, shes nice but not very neat orientated.
Maria Lopez was an interesting teacher for the two days I had her. The first day of class with her, she didn't have us open a textbook, told us we wasted our money if we bought the textbook with the connect code. She told us we didnt need the code. Then proceeded to tell extremely outlandish unbelievable stories about herself. Dropped immediately.
Pay attention. Her personal stories are more than just entertaining. Inspirational and funny.
She talks about her life storys, and doesn't talk about the work
Doesn't teach very well she is trash!!!!!!!! Don't Take her Guys...
Professor Lopez was awful, she would mainly stroke her ego and tell these weird stories and wait for the praise to come rolling in. She was a fairly nice woman, but her classes (I took two) were terrible and I dropped halfway through. Unless you're ready to read the online textbook and basically teach yourself, I'd say find a different professor.
Incredibly difficult- lectures felt arbitrary and the lifestories included seldom were related, but were included in the tests. Feedback on homework and essays was very vague and unhelpful, and asking questions about it didn't help. Sorry to say I don't recommend.
I mean the WORST teacher ive had, She talks about her life the first weeks of the semster and 2 months. I blame the age and hte school for this becuase she really doesnt know how to keep a subject without her bring up her ex husband but over all a great person/ bad teacher. if you wanna know psych. dont take her she dont teach anything.
The worst professor i have ever had! Did not learn a thing about psychology. She told personal stories every class. Its very difficult to focus and be engaged in the class.
Shes horrible dont take her. All she does is tell personal stories. I learned nothing. I really dont like her if I could rate her -5 stars I would.
Professor Lopez was interesting for me. Although it is true that she tells many of her life stories, she has good intentions. Plus, she offers extra credit and allows you to write/print notes for exams. Final exam was a basic presentation (ez). She's a sweet lady who just wants to teach us not to be cucarachas through her personal experiences.
I wouldnt recommend this class if you are looking for a book centered class. lopez teaches by telling personal stories that ties into the topic being learned. There are few assignments and the final is easy. If you want an easy pass take this class.
Very very hard to follow along with her lecture. She has a verbal pause that she uses very often and it makes me lost in what she is tryna say everytime. And i don't think teachers should express their political views in every class.... We get it.
Terrible. Like all the other reviews, she likes to tell stories and thinks everyone is jealous of her life. She will have you do all your homework on inquistive which takes so much time but basically counts nothing towards your grade. Ill take the W over having to ever go back and listen to her B.S. stories ever again. Find a different psych teach
You have to be careful with this lady she is nice and her stories are very interesting, however every essay, midterm, final had a ridiculous amount of confusing instructions that left many hopeless. The lack of response she gives to clarify them makes you feel like a hamster rolling in circles.
Don't recommend. I was excited to take this class and she just made it suck. She's always telling stories??? Sometimes I didn't get what she wanted us to do for homework. Essays were part of exams. Doesn't have you do activities like it says on the slides. She teaches by slides.
M Lopez is a great instructor. Go into her class with an open mind. Be ready to participate and engage in her lectures. She is not just talking to talk. The concepts and stories she tells are meant to allow the student to make connections and apply them to what you get from the book and power-point presentations. She is always willing to help!
Ms Lopez is a great , and very knowledgeable professor. Ive learned so much from her this semester even though the class was transitioned to online. I like her because she has a good way of empowering her students. If you pay attention to details in her class, youll earn good grades. I love her telling stories. I highly recommend her.
Sadly, I did not learn much in this class. It's a shame. She is a tough grader and unclear about assignments. No rubric for essays which is frustrating because if we had one, it would be a huge help! I would recommend a different psych teacher if possible. The stories she tells can be mundane, but try to apply them to concepts.
Don't take this prof. All she did was talk about herself, I took AP PSYCH in high school so I knew material and not a single psychology topic was covered. She made fun of white people and christian people, even called them cockroaches.. Threatened class that she knew the dean so we can't 'tell' on her. Immature , disrespectful, manipulative.
Without warning, she dropped me TWO WEEKS before the end of the semester for missing two assignments. My son and I were both sick on and off and since we're in the middle of a global pandemic, I thought she would be understanding as she stated. When I asked about it she said its because she didn't hear from me...I was sick!
Ms. Lopez is misunderstood. No, you won't learn a whole lot of textbook material through her lectures. You'll mostly read the book and obtain information that way. I do want to say that I think too many students want information force fed to them. Ms. Lopez won't force you to learn. She won't force you to have passion. I got an A. Just try.
Professor Lopez's class was absolutely wonderful to take. If you went to class prepared, by having read the chapters for class then you would understand the lectures. She teaches through the stories of her life experiences in the field. If you don't read or pay attention to her lectures though you're not going to make the connections though.
As a person, she is great. As a professor, not so much. My mom also took her when she went to MSJC and we both think she could be a much better instructor. All I remember from this course is that Maria was a bodyguard for Ceasar Chavez. She tells stories and does not lecture on material. Read the book! She does not lecture on test material!
The WORST when it comes to emails. In her syllabus, she says her best form of communication is email.... she never responds to ANY of my questions about homework. Be prepared to write essays on each chapter every week with no context or help given!!!!! not taking again
Horrific. Couldnt make a quiz online so it was all long essays... all her lectures were her reading definitions word for word from the book that was expensive. I learned absolutely nothing. In fact I switched majors. Waste of money and time. Very disappointing. Do not take this class.
Only reads things straight off of the book without helping any students. Her assignments aren't clear and when asked to specify she said to look at the announcement which is what we were having trouble with. She says she teaches in "stories" but really it's just her trying to relive the best parts of her life. Would NOT recommend
This professor is horrible, I am considering dropping the class. I do not recommend taking this class. When she posts lectures it is just a video of her reading the powerpoints word for word. When she gives assignments she gives extremely vague descriptions and still grades very hard. She is a horrible professor.
I have never left a review on ratemyprofessor but I would love to prevent any students from avoiding this professor at all costs! She only assigns essays and she is not clear on what she wants from you assignment wise. She never responds to emails, yet she is the department chair? By the time she responds the assignment was already due. AVOID!!!!!
Yes, she only focuses on talking her stories, totally nothing about psychology theories; Never leave clear instruction and guideline on essay or homework; Always said her relationship with dean ( hint you not to complain); The worst one I met in MSJC.
Just annoying. 1-pg papers due every week w/ some discussions. Each "test" was four 1-pg papers, a 3-pg paper, and a PPT, all due the same day with a week to do it (Don't expect clear inscructions). Her "classes" were her reading off a slide for 10 minutes and then bragging about knowing Cesear Chavez. The class is do-able, but irritating.
Professor Lopez is a good character, but he does not know how to communicate information and relies on telling family stories that have nothing to do with psychology. Struggling with the tasks because it was not clear also when sending mails to her and she does not respond.
Worst professor in msjc. Doesn't respond to emails at all. Doesn't teach only reads off book. Makes the school look bad. Don't both taking this class not going to learn a damn thing!
Sweet women however her assignments are RIDICULOUS. Essays and tests never have clear instructions, doesn't really teach, talks mainly about her life, I can also barely hear her. Not trying to be rude but just wished I read on her ratings before taking her class and stressing over (only class i stress and hate) Definitely don't recommend.
You must, MUST go to every class or else none of the homework will make sense. She lectures about her life so often, and most of what she talks about has nothing to do with psychology whatsoever. She is a very tough grader, if you don't have that top tier essay, you're grade will drop insanely. Will for sure not take her class ever again.
All she does is talk about her boring life every single lecture. She does not know remotely how to use canvas. She does not grade fairly as a normal prof. would. In essays, you must write incredibly specific or she will give you a literal F on the paper. She makes fun of others casually. She is the absolute worst prof at MSJC. NEVER TAKE HER!!!!!!!
This class is a waste of time Lectures are just her talking about her life, a research she did DECADES ago and her Ex. She also made comments making fun of people with schizophrenia. She leaves no guide lines and there are so many essays. DONT bother messaging her about grades she will tell you she went "above and beyond" which couldnt be less true
If you have any life outside of school, this class is going to be a fail. I work from afternoon to midnight so if I decide to skip class for ONE day to rest, the rest of the assignments don't make sense. She just talks about her boring stories and doesn't interpret why that has any significance in the lecture. She also doesn't respond to emails.
Professor Lopez's class is for you if you genuinely want to learn psychology and appreciate being challenged. I enjoyed her real-life application lectures. You will understand her lessons if you read the weekly chapter ahead of time. The One time I fell behind, I had no clue about the correlations. She appreciates students who do their research.
All she talks about in class are stories of her life and her ex When it comes to assignments, theyre long essays and she wants them to be incredibly detailed and explained but she doesnt explain the instructions as to how to complete assigments She claims that if we have any questions to email her or to text her through canvas, but she never replies
This professor thinks a little too much about herself. Every lecture started with her personal life and how she marched with Cesar Chavez, and how her ex was a cockroach. You were a bad student if you complained about her, and it was never her fault that someone failed her class. You were teaching yourself; and she never lectured.
Psych is my major so I was very excited to start this course. I never questioned my choice of major but this professor completely killed the excitement. She does not give proper feedback when you get a bad grade, leaving you to wonder what you did wrong. This makes it difficult to improve at all as she does not tell you what needs to be improved.
