If you really want to learn spanish, take this teacher. No room for errors!!!
She speaks Spanish from the first minutes util the end, hard to learn. ****
Must do homework. Very energetic and expects a lot from students.
Sra. es muy simpatica!!!!!
Must go to class and do homerwork, other than that class isnt so bad
very easy do homework and study old quizzes 4 test, got an a
Acts like we are speed demons
Very nice teacher, pay attention in class and do homework and you'll have an A. But she doesn't give extra credit and attendance counts toward your grade.
The class is really not hard she just teaches like you are suppose to already know the language, when it is a beginners class. Overall it's a decent class you shouldn't fail.
This is an easy class if you do your homework and study. She speaks Spanish the entire time but it helps you learn. She likes to give easy extra credit. =)
If you go to class and do the homework you will be fine. She is a good teacher and you make get tired of homework most nights before class but you will learn the material.
This teacher is very tough. Her tests are too long- 5 pages and you only have 50 minutes. She gives a quiz in one class and then gives a test the next, without returning quiz.
she is a terrible teacher...do not take her!
Don't let last name fool you, she is a native speaker and doesn't use English much. Long tests, tons of homework, but going to class and doing homework make an A possible.
SRA. M. IS A WOMDERFUL PROFESSOR, VERY HELPFUL & VERY FUNNY! GIVES A LOT OF WORK BUT IF U DO WORK SHEETS U WILL PASS WILL FLYING COLORS
Acts like you should be fluent, when she can't hardly speak our language to teach us. Don't let her know you had Spanish experience in high school. She'll kick you out. Even if it was 3 years ago and you remember nothing. Take Cornejo or Vidal.
this is the worst teacher i have ever had. she likes to embarress people in front of the class, gives a ton of homework, and she is just plain mean. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!
horrible teacher... she doesnt teacher you anything, she gives a ton of homework, DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! SHE IS MEAN AND REALLY HARD. DO YOURSELF A HUGE FAVOR AND FIND SOMEONE ELSE!!!
DO YOUR HOMEWORK EVERY DAY IF YOU DON'T SHE WILL CALL YOU OUT ON IT! SHE IS HARD BUT SHE IS VERY NICE IF YOU GO TO CLASS AND DO HOMEWORK! TAKES ATTENDANCE EVERY DAY AND TAKES POINTS OFF FOR TARDINESS!
She is very tough....I had to flirt with her to make her like me!! Do your homework, or you will look like a FOOL in class.
this was a horrible class, she is so hard. it was the only class i have ever failed. do not take her! find someone else! Mr. Gil is the best! i make A's in there.
Dont let all the other comments scare you. She is a great teacher. As long as you go to class and do homework(which is not that hard) then you will do good in the class. She likes to laugh and trys to make the class fun!
Sr. Mahaffey is an great lady. She tries to make class exciting and interesting and does whatever it takes to make sure you understand. As long as you go to class (bc she takes attendence) and pay attention in class, it should be a breeze! Easy B, fairly easy A.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. Find someone else or you will be very sorry that you didnt.
She is a nice lady, but her class is not a "beginners" course. She speaks in spanish all the time and expects for you to understand.(then repeats what she said in english) Lots of homework, which she makes you read out loud and if you don't have it, you're screwed. Take someone else!
thank the Lord in heaven i had 3 years of spanish in high school or I never wouldve passed this class. i have an A, never do the hw, but like i said.. i've had a lot of spanish. i see other people in my class failing and struggling. shes hateful and not easy to talk to. take someone else
Okay people this is college, so what if she requires and EXPECTS that u actually do your homework and read the book. I'll admit it was a tough course but I have had much worse and much harder! Get over it! I learned a lot in there and it helped me when I went on to 1102. She's nice if u do the hw.
I was very excited to take spanish, and then she killed it for me. I dreaded going to her class. She is a horrible professor with very little understanding. She is not helpful and will make you feel stupid. If you get put into her class drop it, and drop it fast! Please don't make the same mistake I did!
I was so excited to take this class, but now I'm just glad it's over. This teacher does not do well at providing a connection between the spanish and english equivalents. I did not like this class. I used to think I wanted to major or minor in spanish. After her teaching... I have changed my mind!
Very nice, but there is LOTS of work involved in this class! HW load is ridiculous!
She's very anal on attendance and homework, but if you go and do the homework it's an easy A. Her tests were hard and make you think, there was a composition on almost every test. If you want to actually learn something take her. She offers lots of extra credit, like singing in class together to make it fun.
Not a bad person, but not a great teacher. Her class is intense. Make sure you do the HW and get prepared to talk out loud about homework or reading. Study, study, stduy, otherwise you will fail. Her grammar is horrible, but don't tell her that, b/c she is ignorant and will make your life difficult.
awful woman.
The class is very easy, especially if you took any Spanish in high school. But she should be teaching a middle school class, she gets offended if you don't participate and assigns tons of homework. Easy A, but no fun!
this class is pointless! You might as well be teaching yourself. she assigns homework and then teaches you how to do it afterwards & checks attendance everyday! Def. find another teacher, there MUST be better out there!
This teacher is a ****. She does not listen to her students. She will not help you after class. She speaks entirly in spanish even though the class is for beginners. She is fast and hard. haha.
she is horrible! she doesnt answer your questions, in fact she just looks at you like your stupid for asking. speaks entirely in spanish even though this is a beginners class.DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER
I HATED this class. if you don't already understand Spanish you better be a quick learner because the whole class is in Spanish!!!! Gives a lot of homework, and calls you out in class. DO NOT get her if you can!
AWFUL! that is all i have to say!
She is a very bad teach And you can not understand a word that comes out of her mouth. She speaks nothin but spanish in this beginners course. She makes me feel like im failing at life not just in spanish. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND to even my worst enemy!!!!
very intense class for a beginners spanish class - class should be classified as a intermediate class. No English spoken & difficult to understand what she says. Very strict grader no extra credit or allowance for people who have never spoken Spanish. Does not help you figure out why you are struggling - DO NOT RECCOMMEND YOU TAKE THIS CLASS
Teacher is hard to understand, will not help you, hard to ask a question to because you get a answer you already dont understand back. Speaks Spanish only in a beginner spanish course! This class is ridiculous...and I WOULDNT RECOMMEND HER AS A TEACHER!
Unlike everyone else, I really liked Senora Mahaffey. She's just like a high school teacher. It's very easy! She goes over everything and checks your in class work to make sure you're doing it correctly. She sends out an e-mail w/ a study guide for the tests. If you want a high school teacher for spanish 1201, take her. Its an easy A.
She teaches the material after you do the hw. This makes it very difficult to learn and understand the material. Advise not to take her class.
Too self absorbed. Thinks of herself as superior.
No help at all. Does not seem to care whether or not you understand and are learning the material. She does not grade fairly or consistently. If you think you can get assistance from the department head, forget about it. They will not regulate the adjunct instructors and pretty much let them do whatever they want. No matter their ineffectiveness.
good teacher, easy class, especially if you had spanish in high school. just read the book, and do the hw in the workbook. the lab is not mandatory (you get the extra credit anyway), but it helps for the tests.
I had a hard time in this class, although it has been 3 years since I've had Spanish. She was unwilling to help, and would not show me my grade, she said she didn't have time to figure it out. She was unclear and didn't explain things very well. I stayed confused for most part of the time.
Horrible teacher, if I wanted to get all my information online I would have taken an online college course.
VERY EASY A!!! TAKE HERR
This class is going from easy spanish 1 and being thrown into mexico, teacher is very unhelpful and makes an easy class hard with anal grading and extremely hard tests, don't take this class unless u know spanish well.
I took this class in the summer and yes, it is extremely challenging. I am also not the quickest of learners so I had to spend an average of 4-5 hours each day studying. There is an exam and a quiz each week so you if you want to do good you have to really study. She was always very nice to us though and she really wanted us to do well.
She speaks mostly spanish which in my opinion u cant teach me a foreign language in that foreign language. so if u dont kno spanish well already u might not wanna take her.
Very easy class if you took it in highschool. She assigns workbook pages to do for hw, and calls on you in class when going over them. She says to do the exercises online, but I never did. Just read over the material she assigns for hw and do the workbook and you should be fine. Her tests are easy if you study a little bit.
She is very nice and tries to help you understand as much as possible. The hardest thing about this class is that she doesn't speak any English, at all, so you always have to guess what she is teaching. Otherwise, fairly decent teacher and would recommend taking her.
Profesora Mahaffey lectures and in-class group activities. Workbook is not checked, and textbook is used in class. Very little, if any, homework.
OK professor. Textbook is helpful, but not really used. Workbook is useless. Online homework is a joke, very easy. Her lectures are very hard to understand because she speaks no English at all. She is very nice and helpful though.
If you genuinely enjoy learning spanish, dont take her. If you just want to get it over with and make an A, shes your best bet. I made a 96 in this class during HS, so it was a total joke for me in her class. I didnt like that she doesnt correct you if you make mistakes while speaking. even if its a big mistake. she seems to not enjoy teaching.
Poor planning skills, ran out of time in class on more than one occasion. She has a forum so you can ask questions on the online work, but multiple times throughout the semester never responded to questions posted, which is frustrating considering the online work is due the day before the topic is covered in class. Unhelpful in & outside of class.
50% of course work is online. Online work is difficult. Class sessions focus on using what you learned. Puts out a study guide for tests but tests not too bad. Cumulative final. Nice lady. You have to work for a good grade.
not great the class was taught ass backwards
you can hardly understand her english. she speaks span like 90% of the time. considering this is a entry level class its frustrating trying to understand her. heavy use on the book. i got 90's on every test we took, and every compostion (3) and got a B (89) because i missed the first entry in the textbook (bc i hadn't added the class yet) -_-
She was not helpful at all. Do not take the HYBRID class. Unless you know a little about spanish. I taught myself all that i know. The book and the program didnt match up well. The work wasnt to hard but the group actvities in class were boring and useless. The time i spent in class i could of taught myself better. All she used to teach was the book
She meant well but learning spanish from someone who barely spoke english is difficult. Glad I didn't take spanish 1202 with her. If you can, get somebody who speaks english.
She is a very nice lady and she does seem concerned on how her students do, however she can only speak very little english, she talks spanish the whole time! SHE WILL NEVER TEACH IN ENGLISH!
Great professor- really cares for each of her students and wants everyone to do well. Yes she does talk in Spanish most of the time but this is a Spanish class and the best way to learn is to be surrounded by Spanish. Not a hard grader at all, gives extra credit, lots of online homework but doable. Really liked her and would take again. Recommend!
loved her! Spoke spanish in class (this is a spanish class people!) More than willing ot help with hw or anything outside of class. Most the homework was due before class and then we would go over it which was a little frusterating but Most is review from other spanish classes. Lots of online hw, always extra credit on exams. Recommened! :)Muy bien
Ridiculous amounts of homework. 10 sections of online assignments due each class, and an article review assignment every week.Speaks all spanish in class, which is fine with me because I understand her (and I prefer classes taught in spanish), but gives unclear explanations for classroom activities. Loved my class last semester, but her class no fun
From day one she spoke 90% Spanish for a beginner class! She grades hard. I feel like by the end of the class, her expectations of us were to be fluent in the language, which is not realistic. Worst teacher I have had so far.
Only allowed to miss 3 classes or she'll fail you, Must summarize every chapter out of the text (graded),Online quizzes fairly difficult/timed, but straight from text,She uses ppts that aren't her own,Lots of busywork and short answer hw from pdfs,She is helpful when writing papers, and will go over it word for word with you,Study guides for tests.
I loved this class! She is not an easy teacher but she is helpful if you need her. She speaks nothing but Spanish but this is only to help her students, how else do you expect to learn Spanish if you are not immersed in it? IF you are lazy don't take her but if you work hard and focus you will easily get an A or B
If you are confident in your Spanish speaking/writing abilities this is the class for you. If not, seek out another professor, because she is very serious!
She is very kind and unlike what other people say she will help you if you go to her after class during office hours. However, her tests are ridiculous and I have never finished them in the class time because they are so long and very hard. The compositions are almost as difficult as the tests. Even though everything else is easy, the tests aren't.
Professor Mahaffey is absolutely amazing. She is the sweetest, cutest lady. Class is fun, so you might as well go since attendance is mandatory. Most of my classmates had a pretty good foundation of spanish already, and for that reason it was very easy. But if you are just starting out, this may be hard for you. assignments are online and easy.
online class really easy !. wouldve made an A but i missed one quiz. assignments are due sundays. work consists of fill in the blanks, crosswords and answering questions about passages in spanish. 4 quizzes . final was in person but it was made up of questions from the online assignments and quizzes. EASY A
Loved her! She was a very interesting professor and very nice! I speak fluent Spanish so the class was pretty easy for me! However, I enjoyed this class and learned a lot of cultural things I did not know before! She is very clear in what she expects from you and there are chances for extra points on tests sometimes! Not a hard prof at all!
This class was very easy, id recommend it to anyone needing a third semester of language. I did the bare minimum work and got an A. Save the weekly assignment questions because thats all that the tests use. You can get a 100 without trying. The final is in class but if you review the 5 tests, which doesn't take long, you will get an A.
Awfullll. Never post grades. Do not take this class if you want to learn Spanish, because you wont. Excessive homework. save yourself and do not take this class.
All you do in class is group work - no lectures or help. If you ask her a question you won't get an answer, however from then on you will be viewed by her as one of the stupid students. Good luck after that. The only good thing is she does offer minor extra credit (going to a 2 hour long film) however if you don't take it you are blacklisted.
You will have to learn everything outside of class on your own BUT you can easily get an A or B. There are a lot of homework assignments online but she tells you a month in advance when everything is due. Her English isn't very good and the entire class is taught in Spanish, which actually helps you to learn. The tests are completely random.
Poor. The entire class was taught in a thick Spanish immersion, which wouldn't be bad if she translated what she said into English. Learning curve was way too high, and she didn't teach us how to conjugate regular preterite verbs but still expected us to know how to.
To start off with, save yourself and do NOT choose this instructor. Although it is a Spanish class, she speaks 100% Spanish and talks very very fast to the point where you have no idea what is going on. She does not elaborate anything in English so you are just left there to figure out what you're supposed to be doing.
All online except final. Your homework & quizzes are worth 60% of your grade. You get unlimited attempts on homework, so there is no reason you'd get any lower than 100%. Quizzes are the exact questions from the homework. The final is worth 40%, and is the ONLY time you will need to be on campus for the class. Study for the final and its an EASY A!
She will speak absolutely no English throughout the class. Even from the first day she will only speak in Spanish and expect you to do the same. Homework and attendance are the biggest grades and class has nothing to do with the test. AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS
After not having taken spanish for a year and then coming into this class, I found it very easy. The online work takes a while but is very manageable and easy as long as you don't procrastinate. Not going to class will kill your grade!!!! Tests, quizzes & compositions are all easy and she is a good teacher.
I feel like she should only teacher higher level spanish. Hardly anybody in the class knew what she was talking about. She is a very specific grader and expects you to know the material before class. She talks very fast and if she calls on you than I hope you understood her. I'm glad I'm done with her
She gives ridiculous amounts of work, she does 7 different assignments within one class periods, she never finishes the assignments so you don't end up learning anything. You will find yourself too busy trying to keep up to the point you learn absolutely nothing. She is not sympathetic, she will give you a test, quiz, and a project the same week.
She is horrible. Very strict. She also catches an ATTITUDE when you don't understand something. Like who does that? WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
A lot of homework, quizzes every week. You have to attend to every single class. Homework is excessive for this class. There are also a lot of projects and tests are hard. She definitely is a hard grader. I would not recommend this professor this class is hard for no reason!
She gives you a lot of busy work which makes it so you have no time to focus on the bigger assignments that are worth more. She's an unfair/inconsistent grader. She is very scattered and confusing because she jumps from topic to topic in such a short amount of time that you can't follow. I definitely do not recommend her.
I took this class during the Summer as a condensed class and I got a B, if you follow the syllabus you can get a B or higher. She was very helpful and there was 2 different places to get tutoring if you need it.
Easy. 9 assignments/week: 3 crosswords, 3 fill in the blank, 3 multiple choice quizzes. Says work should take 16-24 hrs/wk, I spent maybe an hour on all 9 each week. Quizzes are multiple choice questions, you read 1-3 sentences (in Spanish) and question is English . Copy and paste questions into Translate. Class is in English except for passages.
Love Maria shes a great professor who genuinely cares about her students, and her Spanish is very easy to understand as far as dialects go.
I've had her fro 2201,2202, and 3202. Personally I love her. She sometimes gets bad reviews because she works hard to make you learn the language. Since a lot of time people take lower levels for easy A's, I wouldn't recommend her for this. She does speak Spanish (expects you to as well) As are not impossible but you won't just show up and get one.
Took this class online be prepared to dedicate time to doing the work. Weekly assignments, 4 quizzes, and a final exam. It's taught in English which makes it easier. Highly recommend if you're needing an upper level Spanish!
Easy online Spanish class
Worst online class. The teacher is absolutely the laziest professor and assigns roughly 3 passages a week with 150 questions because she cannot teach the material.
She was okay, she graded fairly. The class was not hard.
Very rude professor. Constantly accuses of using outside sources to complete quizzes and exams when there's clearly a browser. Tough grader
Professor Maria does not seem to want to help her students succeed when it comes to learning Spanish. And if you know Spanish be careful because more than likely she will accuse you of cheating or copying work off online.
Professor Mahaffrey was an okay instructor. She gives solid feedback on exams and assignments, but she is too quick to accuse students of utilizing outside resources, not taking into account that many students have taken multiple Spanish courses previously. Otherwise, shes an okay choice, but go with someone else if you can.
My class with her was a hybrid asynchronous/synchronous online class. She was OK, but be aware she will speak only Spanish during class, and is quick to accuse students of cheating/using outside sources for homework when they didn't. For that reason alone I would take Spanish with a different instructor if possible.
I am taking this class asynchronously and she is very quick to assume that you are cheating. Despite not cheating, she always takes away points when you display a good knowledge of spanish. The class is pretty easy but her terrible grading can ruin your grade.
She is a very understanding professor and makes class time interesting. You do have to participate and go to class in order to understand the material because learning from just the textbook and homework is difficult. She does mostly speak in spanish, but coming from a non-spanish speaker, it helps me better understand the spanish language.
I took this course asynchronously. Most work was on portales, due twice a week, plus three exams on canvas & three boomalang conversations. The announcements she posts are almost entirely in Spanish, her grading is a little on the harder side but overall pretty fair. I was never accused of cheating and google is my bestie.
The hardest class I have ever taken at uncc. There is a lot of homework but it is not extremely difficult. The exams are extremely hard and she is a very harsh grader. When asked if I could do extra credit I was denied the opportunity. Due to how difficult this class was I have to retake it in the summer. I do not recommend this class.
Really caring professor. She offers extra credit if you go to some events hosted by the Spanish/Latin clubs. She is pretty funny and makes the class discussion-based. As someone who is not good at learning languages, she made me feel comfortable. Just be prepared to do the McGrawHill assignments multiple times a week. Had around 5-6 exams.
Prof. Mahaffey is one of the most caring and understanding instructors at UNCC. She assigns a TON of homework, but it is the only way to learn Spanish effectively. Many assignments are online, but some are handwritten, so be prepared to write quite a bit. If you come to class, actively try to learn, and do your homework, you'll be fine.
Prof. Mahaffey's class has a lot of homework, but it's essential for learning Spanish effectively. Attend class, engage actively, and use tools like unstuck study to prep - you'll do well.
This class was super hard. As someone who has never taken a Spanish class before, she assured me that everything would be fine and this class would be easy. is super strict on attendance and is hard to talk to about grades. gives no extra credit and does not round grades either. I finished the class with a 79.8 and refused to help me get .2 points
Mrs. Mahaffey is a kind and fun professor. There's alot of homework towards the beginning, and it felt like there were tons of presentations. I was picked for the 1st group for every presentation, which I felt was a little unfair as I had less time to prepare than others. She was really nice but the work is hard, so be prepared.
