Read off slides. Lazy/inconsiderate when providing resources. Exams were so unnecessarily complicated and tricky.Had a final two days after a 3rd mid that concluded material. AVG WAS A 40 percent and we were only given mt 1 key to study for the final with. Mid 3 grades out 2 hours before final with no review session before final just terrible.
Her lectures were not organized well and her exam was so convoluted. She expected too much from students in a general biology class.
The lectures were super condensed and covered more than what the course was supposed to. She would've been fit for an upper division bio class but not a general bio. Midterm 3 average was in the 40s and the final's average was in the 50s.The questions on the midterm asked for very niche things that were mentioned once. They lowered cutoffs by 1%.
Professor gave a 1% curve. Exams did not reflect material learned in class. I would give a 0 if I could.
Hard to tell what will be on tests because she goes well beyond the scope of the course in lecture but then expects us to know some of it. Tests are difficult and MT3 (40% avg) was 2 days before final. Refused to give resources like exam keys or review sessions before final. Grade cutoffs (not curved) were bad. Difficult to do well in her class.
I often go to both lecture and watch her lectures on the material after in order to understand the material better. In lecture, she was really fast and it was difficult to understand, but over the recordings she went in detail about the material, furthering my understanding of the topic. Lectures were well organized, but the exams were difficult.
Sometimes the questions she asked on exams were very very specific, which was a bit frustrating. She was a good lecturer, and she was always happy to answer questions. I'm sure that, with a bit more tweaking of the material and a few more quarters of practice, she could be a really great professor.
Lectures were just repetitions of her slides without additional content verbally. Went super fast and barely gave time for students to write down the immense amount of content on slides. Quizzes were super specific and tedious, they required very specific wording, even for words that weren't key to biology. Midterm avg were >50%
Professor Maldonado overloads lectures with details and often presents concepts out of order which can be confusing. iClicker attendance was checked every lecture, TAs checked attendance every discussion. One out of three midterm grades are dropped but the midterms are difficult, cheat sheets allowed.
She tries to shove 50 lecture slides, each filled with information, into a 50 minute lecture period. Her tests are multiple choice, but are so difficult and make no sense. The class test averages are like 50%.
Her slides are confusing and hard to follow, and not detailed at all. Concepts are rushed, and there are no study guides provided, aside from a "Midterm # Review Assignment" on canvas which barely even covers midterm material. Midterm averages are awful. For this past midterm, the total number of questions was 25, and the average correct was 12.
Her lectures are excessively dense and she does an extremely poor job of actually explaining the important material. She gives you basically nothing to prepare for the midterms, you get one practice test that is ridiculously easy compared to the actual exam (useless). No curve at all and her grade cutoffs are crazy (an A starts at 95%). Terrible
She tends to dive too deep into lecture material and can't really answer questions that well. Stopped going to lectures and just reviewed the recordings and slides for notes. For exams, my golly the wording on the midterms are weird and hard to understand so the practice exams hardly help for actual midterms. Help yourself and not take her.
She reads off of slides and often goes on tangents to only tell us its information that isn't relevant to the course. Midterms are difficult and worded strangely, not at all like the practice midterms we are given. No extra credit opportunities or curve which makes an A unachievable for most. Midterm averages are 50%.
Do not take this professor if you want a chance in passing BIS. Lecture slides make no sense and are full of information unrelated or unhelpful for midterms. She doesnt know how to answer questions asked by students, and talks about unrelated topics. Exams are worded so poorly and no study material provided. Practice midterms are not helpful at all
Genuinely the worst professor at davis, the lectures are hard to understand since she just reads off the pictures on the slides. The midterms are insanely difficult and she doesn't acknowledge her whole class is failing and just says there are more opportunities.
Her lectures are very compact with loads of material that she just reads off instead of explaining. The midterms are insanely difficult with practice midterms and study tips that are not helpful at all to the real tests. The average for midterm 2 was below 50% and she has no intentions to curve the course. Avoid this professor at all costs.
Her lecture are condensed and often she cannot finish her slides. Her exams are extremely difficult. No curve. No extra credit. MTs average was like 50%. Terrible grade cutoffs (A+ 99%, A 95%). I would give a 0 if i can
“Amazing" slide. She never look up what the fk she upload on Canvas. Terrible slides, all images mixed together.
Begging to fix the format of the slides. It is such a nightmare even just look at it! Plus, midterm sucks
Horrible professor. Run. Don't take her.
The concepts in the course are not that difficult to grasp if you have taken biology before. But what makes this class hard is the way your knowledge is tested, 75% of your grade is the exams. All of the exams are multiple choices and what determines your grade how you good you are at taking the test (like SAT) rather than the actual Biology.
I would say people who have this professor good luck. Other than that, RUN!!! Class average for every midterm is around 50-60%. Practice midterm and actual midterm are two different level.
Don't take for BIS2A! Maldonado's class is probably the worst I've had at Davis. Her lectures are hard to follow and slides are text heavy. She does not teach the information well and does not acknowledge her shortcomings when the exams show that the majority of the class does not have a good grasp on the information.
I don't know if I'm going to pass this class, but honestly, whoever is reading this, don't take her. The practice tests are on a different level from the actual test. The lectures were worse because she used different sources on the slides. And when you go into that two-hour discussion, the TAs expect you to know everythingggggggggggggggggggggggg.
This is hands down the most frustrating class I have taken at UC Davis. Maria Maldonado is a horrible professor; please avoid her at all costs. Lectures were useless, midterms were extremely difficult, and practice assignments were almost completely irrelevant to the questions asked on the midterms. Test averages were low and she doesn't curve.
Honestly everything is horrible, the practice exams are hard for no reason and it doesn't even tell you what you got wrong for the first attempt. Exams are hard with no curve and even with one exam dropped, it's still extremely stressful. Just wait an extra quarter if this is your only option.
She really doesn't know how to explain concepts, and she keeps mentioning things then saying we don't need to know it, so I don't really know what we're supposed to know. The practice midterms are so different from the actual tests and the average for the first midterm was 60% and 48% for the second. This is an intro bio class......................
Once I realized I wasn't learning from this class (week 2) I skipped the rest of the quarter. Grade cutoffs are wayyy too high and midterm averages are 60 and 48 respectively. The only thing you could do to get an A is to literally teach yourself with online resources.
Incredibly mid lecturer, class is moderately difficult with homework/discussions until the tests. The level of understanding expected to answer some of the questions on the exams are comically high. This is an issue because she also refuses to curve even when exam averages are 40-60%. Do not take if you want to learn BIS 2A well or have a good GPA.
She isn't a good lecturer. The practice worksheets/exams/quizzes were comically easy compared to the actual questions on the exams, the practice problems were also almost unrelated to the exam too. The homework/discussion assignments are super easy. Prepare to study hard for little to no reward in this class.
PLEASE DO NOT CHOOSE!!!
The exams are not representative of the material discussed in class. Exam questions often involve high level integration of several different concepts across several different lectures, which would only make sense for an upper division class. The professor does not explain how to solve the questions or how to even reason through them. AVOID HER
Don't take her. She is so bad.
Don't take this class. Don't take this class. Don't take this class. If you have no other choice, then wait another quarter. There is no curve in this class. Really, don't take this class.
Exams and midterms are pretty much everything and the questions are written needlessly complex. The professor claims that the questions aren't based on semantic tricks but they most definitely are.
One of the worst professors at Davis. Exams seemed something from an upper division bio class and she expects us to know how to do applications of the stuff from lecture. Powerpoint slides are formatted terribly and she goes quickly through the slides during lecture. NEVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
Lectures are 40+ slides each that you are expected to memorize, she struggles to get through every slide with the time given in the lectures. The only save-able aspect about this course was the discussions where the TA went thoroughly through the content that the professor didn't teach/briefly mentioned. Difficulty = to upper division class.
Dr. Maldonado is the most incompetent professor I have come across at UC Davis so far. Although she is willing to teach and help students learn she is awful at delivering concepts efficiently. The tests questions are horrible and highly conceptual, good luck if she's your only option.
WORST professor I have taken in college. Please listen to the bad reviews, she worse than even what those describe.Exams are incredibly difficult and is a poor lecturer, for example Britt was also teaching the same quarter and her exams were 10-25% higher class average than maldonado's. Maldonado exams were 60, 48, 53. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
Dooooooooon't choose her!!!
the worse teacher to ever teach a subject. test are insanely hard do not relate to what is taught in lecture, dives super deep into systems that were never mentioned. hope she gets fired this is absurd
She DOES NOT know how to teach. I studied everyday and my studying does NOT pay off! That was the most frustrating thing. The exams are crazy difficult and she doesn't even know how to answer questions one on one. I did just about everything: always went to her office hours/TAs', payed attention and prepped for lectures etc. Disappointing, fire her
She even says herself lecture is not enough for the tests. The tests are so confusing, I went to every lecture, bought the optional book, attended lecture review!! Nothing is helping me do well on exams I don't understand how a intro class can be this hard.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I have never really worried about being close to failing a class...but this prof HAS ME BREAKING DOWN. I thought I would be done with the bis series after this class but I am def not. I am so close to needing to retake this class. DO NOT TAKE HER.
DONT TAKE HER I STUDIED EVERY DAY IM FAILING THE CLASS
she does not know how to teach
I haven't stopped crying. I put so much effort into this class and I am getting worse than the average on tests which is 50% mind you she does not curve. There is no way of knowing what will be on the exam with 60+ slides every lecture and the tests will still somehow be about topics that weren't even on the slides. I really am kind of traumatized
she CANT TEACH. SHOULDNT BE ALLOWED TO TEACH EVER AGAIN.
WARNING!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF SHE IS YOUR PROFESSOR. YOU WILL REGRET IT!!! Tests are extremely hard and she does not teach concepts well at all. Her lecture slides are full of information not even on the tests. Take her class at your own risk!!
Please don't take this class. She is incredibly rude in e-mails and has no compassion (said if you miss an exam due to emergency or sickness that you just get a 0 no exceptions). No amount of explanation can do justice in expressing just how horrible of a lecturer she is. Seriously, do not take this class I have no idea how she still has a job.
The professor is incapable of teaching and just presents slides. Exam's are not reflective of what is taught in lecture/lab or what is given on the practice exams. Majority of your quarter will be spent teaching yourself. DO NOT TAKE! Additionally, she doesn't even weight her canvas right so you have to calculate your grade yourself, WTF?
GIRL YOU BETTER RUN.
my friends who had already taken bis 2a weren't able to help me because of how complicated and advanced she taught this intro course & my friends who finished their upper div bis/npb courses tried their best to help using the material they were taught in those classes but were still confused. but don't worry cause she graciously gives 1 point of ec
The class is not on the level of an introductory bio course. It feels much more like an upper division course. the exams are not reflective of the lecture content. MT averages are in the 40s-50s with the highest being 60%. Offers NO CURVE. This is the type of professor that makes sutdents hate the course subject. Absolutely subpar on every level.
The goal of a professor is to set students up for success & provide a sturdy and solid foundation for upper-division courses on such subjects however she did none of that. From content-heavy unorganized lecture slides to obnoxiously specific practice midterms and even more specific midterms. Yeah, don't do that to yourself. Take 2A another quarter.
she makes professor britt look like an angel
she's the absolute WORST. DO NOT TAKE BIS 2A with her, you will regret it so bad. class averages are 40 and 50%'s and she refuses to curve. the whole class is basically failing and she is so bad at lecturing. she cannot deliver content clearly for the life of her, and there's no textbook on equitable access that students can access.
The majority of the class is failing right now. Listen, this is the absolute hardest class I have ever had to take. Maldonado really does not like teaching or cares about her students success whatsoever. I am rethinking my major and it sucks when I'm really passionate about bio. I am a student who is eager to learn but feel like I just got beat up
Her expectations as to what people need to know are oftentimes unclear and she uses four different textbooks with no indication as to which section should be read for each lecture. She doesn't curve, but she does give three midterms and a final where the lowest grade of the exams can be dropped. Lectures can be confusing, but aren't terrible
Professor was so good that I'll have to take her class again!
Terrible teacher. Fails half her class and doesn't care. To get a flat A you need a 95% which is insane. Never take her, if she's the only teacher available wait a quarter to take the class.
Seconding everything other people have already said. Just wanted to add that she never bothered to put her grade weights onto Canvas, so you don't know what your actual grade is unless you calculate it yourself. Actual grades are at LEAST 10% lower. Many people are failing this class without even realizing it. She just doesn't care, it's sad.
Hardest professor of all time, I failed. I look forward to taking in the spring!!!!!!
she tells u to utilize "active learning strategies" like more than half of the class isn't failing and like its a u problem! but don't worry, bc she GENEROUSLY gave us a single (1) ec point for our m3 for >75% of class doing the course evaluation (not without telling us we basically didn't deserve it bc only 74.5% filled it out. -_-)
The first time taking her was so nice, I had to do it twice
The most disgusting class I‘ve ever had, tomorrow is the final, good luck for everyone, I'm gonna fail:)When u see her name next time, just RUN. My GPA for this semester is ruined on this class.
THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER EVER EVER HAD IN MY 4 YEARS OF COLLEGE COURSE TAKING. I have never felt so underprepared for every single exam in a class. Practice exams do not align with her actual exams. The grades shown in Canvas is misleading because our actual grade is AT LEAST 10% lower. Even when given students feedback she makes no change.
She makes it almost impossible to do well in her course. Lectures are rushed, and she barely spends any time on some topics but asks the most detailed questions about them on exams. Averages for midterms are around 40% and she does nothing about it. More than half of her students are failing the class. Take any professor but her.
Maldonado the goat, eliminating the medical competitions
I have never been so emotionally distressed by a class until taking this one. I gave up on going to lectures in person because it was a waste of my time and none of it even really correlates with the tests anyways
i have to pay thousands in tutition to be taught by someone like her
I'm not even trying to be dramatic but prof Maldonado is genuinely the WORST professor I have ever had. Half the class is failing without realizing because canvas grades are inaccurate. Unbelievably difficult tests with F averages on all 3. No curve but given 1 singular point of extra credit what an angel!!
My biggest regret of my academic career was taking her class. I dont understand how someone in her position just doesnt care for her students. No compassion whatsoever. If you are someone who cannot risk failing do not take her class. I got an A in AP Bio but have a D in her class (I think because she just mentioned our grades on canvas are wrong)
Lectures are absolutely useless with 60+ slides on each. Midterm averages are some of the worst ive seen with midterm 2 averages being in the 40s. Numerous students in her class have reached out in concern to her teaching/testing style and she responds in a very condescending way offering no help at all essentially saying its our fault. horrible.
horrible professor... she single handedly ruined my GPA. She has a room full of students expressing their concerns to her and she does not care. RUN
NEED TO FIRE HER LITERALLY WASTE OF TUITION MONEY
The lecture material was difficult to understand and did not make sense regarding the exam questions. Also, in lectures, don't bother asking questions because she ignores most of them and instructs you to read the textbook. If it weren't for the weekly quizzes, which absolutely saved my grade, I don't think it would be possible to pass.
don't just don't
Avoid at all costs
Mandatory discussion sections, TA was not good. Lectures were confusing & disorganized. She's a very boring lecturer. If you have the option to take another class/ professor definitely look into it
Would not recommend.
Just no…..
Worst professor I've ever had. Have to teach myself everything, the material we learn in class is not at all on the exams. Just a terrible terrible experience. If this is your only option, wait for next quarter. This was just terrible.
Don't take her class. Wait until another quarter, this will be a waste of your time and effort. Refused to lower grade cutoffs when the averages for each test were below 55%. Each test was terribly worded and super confusing to understand what she was asking. Lectures have absolutely no correlation to the exams or what is in discussion.
i studied 30+ hours to get a 50% on the final, which was the average btw! and there's barely a curve! canvas grades are higher than actual grades, i still don't know if i actually passed this class. i beg you, AVOID AT ALL COSTS. tests are 25MCQ EXTREMELY CONFUSING. you can feel 100% confident in the material and still fail. AVOID AVOID AVOID
Don't take this class if you want an A. I attended every lecture, discussion, review session, and studied for hours outside of class to just be confused every time I would open up an exam. Maldonados questions are so specific and about material we were told we were not expected to memorize in class. No curve, hard tests (50% averages), terrible
I took this course FQ2023 with her and Britt. Over a year later she is still the worst professor I've ever had. She reads the loaded lecture slides carelessly and uses unnecessarily difficult exam problems, which led to ~1/2 of the class failing. Sad to see that she hasn't improved at all since last year. She completely deserves the ratings.
I studied for 30+ hrs every midterm, got near the avgs which was 40-50%. No curve. The TA was the only way I learned anything. Prof has around 60 slides per lecture with more info each than the Declaration of Ind., and then none of it really relates to the exams. Practice exams were not helpful at all. Doesnt assign a textbook via equitable access
I took this professor F23 with her and britt, and this is still the worst class I ever took at davis. I put all my energy in this class and the averages were still 40% on midterms. I only passed this class because britt made M1 so it had cushion. Getting my 16% grade on M3 literally as I was sitting to take the final is a core memory fr.
When I saw avoid this professor at all costs, I mean don't even look at her class on schedule builder, because you will be in a for a ride that leads only in pain, physical, mental, spiritually. GPA-dropper of a professor. Honestly, the worst professor at UCD.All midterms and finals were failing averages even when I studied for 15 hrs plus for each
Worse class ever. Studied HOURS, attended every lecture/discussion, had to find resources outside of this classes and still failed every exam. When I say this class brings nothing but tears, stress, and literally depression. Please avoid if you choose happiness.
Like that one review said: never wore my seatbelt while driving to school because I wanted to die before making it to her class. See you in spring!
Ms. Maria Maldonado just does not know how to teach properly. Her lectures make no sense at all, and all she does is read off of the slideshow. She mumbles, and when questions are asked during lectures, there are lots of instances in which she cannot answer the questions for us, meaning she doesn't understand the content any better than we do...
Maldonado was the worst bio prof I've had. Class content isn't difficult, but her tests are insanely hard compared to lecture content. Slides are easy and she barely gets through them, then she tests as if this is an upper division bio class. If you have the option, don't take her. No curve and 42-50% avg. on all tests!!!!
WORST PROFESSOR EVER, DO NOT TAKE, AVOID AT ALL COSTS, DON'T THINK YOU ARE A DIFFERENT BREED TO TAKE HER CLASS PLEASE AVOID!!!!
Just no. Run for your own sanity because right now I'm crashing out BAD.Hope she sees these reviews and reconsiders her teaching habits and testing.
Do not take this professor if you want a chance at having higher than a C in the course! She is a terrible lecturer, her tests are absolutely impossible to understand and all of the midterm averages, along with the final were around an F. Also, the TA's are a total hit or miss, so if you get stuck with a bad TA you are screwed. Nothing good to say
Shoutout to Professor Maldonado for weeding out the medical school competition so early
If u score the average on every test you would still end up not passing the class like(40-50%) like I did and every test was on irrelevant information that would not pertain to lecture material. need a way to get her fired this is absurdly unfair
Terrible professor. She just reads off of slides and doesn't do much else. Your grade is heavily reliant on a select few assignments and the tests. The tests would cover things she said not to worry about or go above the course material. The most important assignments had mistakes in them that made it even harder to get a better score. Avoid.
Based on the score distribution on Canvas, the average student did not score above the C- cutoff. Somehow the idea of a curve was rejected.
Lectures heavy, unorganized, she just basically reading things off slides. Exams are difficult, nothing the same from lectures and practices. Exams avg 40%-50%, she said grade cutoff maybe lower, even the class avg so low, I think she did not lower it tbh. My GPA ruined, I have 3 A in other classes. Was excited to learn bio but she's just so bad.
I was hoping she would've at least adjusted the grade cutoffs, but it seems she did not. Averages on all the exams were from 44% to about 50%. I studied for hours and that was not enough to even get a B. Her lectures are poorly formatted and mumbles when explaining the material. Her exams are NOT remotely close to an intro class. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
i'm getting depressed bc of her
By far the worse professor I have ever had. I ended the class with a 91% but she down curved it to a C for legitimately no reason.
THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER, i hope she gets fired. SHE LITERALLY SENT AN EMAIL SAYING THAT SHE MIGHT GIVE A CUT OFF IF SHE WANTED TO. what kind of human being is so selfish to not want her students to pass and succeed. Even classes harder than this still wants their students pass. Keep in mind her average in the class was a 40%.
Holy this class was an experience (a terrible one)
Never felt so humbled. Just avoid to keep your sanity :)
If you see her on schedule builder just wait a quarter for a new professor to teach the class literally...
she's awful. don't take her. the whole quarter i thought i was passing bc of the canvas grade only for her to tell us towards the end of the quarter that canvas wasn't accurate and we had to calculate our own grade. the exams are more than conceptual and you learn more in discussion than lectures. just wait to take the course w someone else.
no text book through EA. 45% class avg, 75% of course grade is 3 exams. not testing on lower div. bio content, all questions looked like smthn off of an upper div bio class. 25 point/25 question exams. 60+ slide lectures. yes BIS2a is difficult content, but her teaching style and grading criteria made it exponentially worse. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!!
Let's all email the dean/department of biology and get our grades adjusted, every test we were tested on non relevant lecture material that seemed like it was from an upper div class. No curve for 40-50% test average worth 75% of grade is absurd.
Had a B, a solid B, and she CURVED DOWN to a C+, why would you use canvas if it's inaccurately graded by 2 levels of letter grades?? I get that the canvas grades aren't accurate but why is the prof curving down by so much ? Why use canvas at all…
Avoid this professor! 快逃!!! Lectures are just reading off PowerPoints, and the tests (3, 75% of your grade) are poorly worded and confusing. Even with a cheat sheet, most people score 40-50%. This class caused me so much stress—I regret taking it every day. It's a nightmare for your GPA. Save yourself the headache and take another professor.
Not her, not her, not her, don't take her. NO MATTER HOW HARD I STUDIED FOR HER EXAMS, I always failed. It was hard to understand what she was saying during the lectures, and at one point, it even felt like she wasn't teaching at all. If you are reading this and trying to take BIS 2A, please let this be a sign that you should not take her class.
I went to class most of the time, went to every discussion, did every assignment available, spent more than 10+ hours in the library studying for exams regularly, and still ended up with a A-. Kinda mad there was no curve.
If I could give a 0/5 rating I would. This professor teaches straight from her slides, reading out word for word what each slide has and not going into detail the processes and steps that are taught, which will be on the midterms. Her grade cutoffs are within reason but she refuses to lower the cutoffs when the averages for all the exams are
absolutely ruined my gpa, my confidence, and my will to LIVE. thank you maria maldonado for ruining my gpa for medical school!!!! please learn how to teach considering that we pay an arm and leg to attend this school.
A previous review said she reads her slides word for word. THAT'S A LIE! SHE READS LESS! She would just read one bullet point and not even elaborate while skipping multiple slides. She'd go on tangents on topics we don't need to know for the class. I did better on midterms when I skipped lectures and read her slides myself.
Nothing more I can say... other reviews say it all
Studied so hard for this class and barely scraped by. Very lazy professor; definitely seemed to just wanna come in, get out ASAP, and then go claim her paycheck.
Had to sell an arm and a leg for a B in this class. You have no idea what your final grade will be until she inputs the final grade into OASIS. I ended the class with an A- in Canvas. The entire quarter she stated that "Canvas grades aren't correct" and that we should calculate them ourselves... instead of her just fixing the Canvas grades.
Uncaring and lazy professor. Would not recommend; even if you know the content, it is still difficult to succeed.
I'll keep it short and sweet: she can't teach. Read's off the slides which are painful to look at tbh. At that point might as well've copy and pasted someone else's slides cuz anything would be better than her's.
THIS PROFESSOR IS AS BAD AS EVERYONE ELSE IS SAYING. IK SOMETIMES PPL EXAGGERATE ON THIS WEBSITE BUT THEY AREN'T THIS TIME
Somehow the TA's teach better than her. I would trust them to be the professor over her honestly.
Just trust and don't take lol
Genuinely why and how does she even have ratings above a 1?
HOW TO REPORT❗️(from Dean's office) "Dr. Maldonado no longer has the power to change the grade or the grading assignment criteria for the class; any change requests would need to go through and be approved by the Academic Senate Grade Change Committee." [I can't put link here, you can google "grade corrections uc davis"and it will be the first one]
Agree with most of the other reviews. If you didn't take AP Bio or aren't a biology major, don't take this professor.
she is the reason i did not go to Davis.
Did not lecture in-depth. Read off slides. Practice exams were not like the actual exams, over-complicated and wrote lengthy actual test questions. Go to lecture reviews and self-teach if you take this professor and want to pass. Barely any curve or none at all.
Gave her a shot because she initially did not have many reviews when I was registering last quarter. Worst miss of my life. Her lectures were so unorganized and incoherent I was better off catching up on sleep. Even my TA did a better job at teaching. With such low averages, youd expect her to lower cutoffs, but I guess she just decided to be evil.
Too much in every lecture, and rushes through each time. Very very very hard to get an A. Lot's of things on the test was never mentioned on lecture, so how do we know what to learn? Struggled to get an A- on canvas grade, ended up getting a B+.
Professor was overall horrible. There were times where she had no idea what she was talking about, and then proceed to use the wrong examples she had on the slides. Not only this, but there were times where she would mumble or murmur whatever she was saying. Don't take her! Ever!
I left this class with more questions than answers. The lecture was not organized in an easy way that I could understand. Subtopics were not clear and bullet points are not worded in a format that immediately tells you what you need to know. So much terminology in each lecture, and if you don't understand the vocab you don't know what's happening.
The reviews are no joke. I actually believe most of these reviews were too kind. The test questions were SO beyond the scope of gen bio. HORRIBLY written 25 MCQs in 50 minutes (not enough time) Averages for 3 midterms + final: 15/25,11/25,11/25,13/25. FOR AN UNCURVED CLASS! she just read off slides in class and practice exams were not helpful. RUN
Do not!!!Choose her classes!!!!
Do not take under any circumstance. Please save yourself, your sanity and your physical/mental wellbeing.
Definition of hell on earth
Professor was overall horrible. There were times where she had no idea what she was talking about, and then proceed to use the wrong examples she had on the slides. Not only this, but there were times where she would mumble or murmur whatever she was saying. Don't take her! Ever!!!!! ever!
Keep in mind her average in the class was a 40%.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One tip I'd probably give is drop the class if you have her.
SHES TEACHING AGAIN THIS FALL. AVOID IF YALL CAN PLEASE
You think Farahat was bad…oh boy!
She's like if the physics department took over the biology classes. This made me want to turn off my respiration!
wait the review below was a mistake oops
To the incoming freshmen taking BIS2A...welcome to UC Davis! I hope your stay here will be as productive and enjoyable. However, please do not take her as she will mentally drain you. If anything, please consider taking bis2A with a different professor in another quarter. Maybe try BIS2B or MAT17A or maybe even CHE2A? Be warned!
I was sent to the backrooms as a result of her class. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE!
Was able to transfer schools oml thank god cuz this class made me more and more depressed by the day
She makes farahat look like a saint. She curved down in my class...YES YOU HEARD IT HERE FOLKS, SHE CURVED DOWN..
Made me really consider joining the military after this class. DO NOT TAKE
Coming from a survior here is a tip to survive: DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! If you unfortunatly are taking this class I'd highly reccomend going to AATC tutoring and LA's since they'll be the most beneficial. Again if you can, take this at a CC or just another quarter.
She ended my hopes of going to med school.
AVOID HER CLASS! I was i only able to get a decent grade because of the help of the learning assistants. BUT DO PLEASE AVOID HER CLASS FOR YOUR SANITY!
Heard she was teaching again and wanted to say that this was a very difficult class. Youre better off studying on your own.
I was absolutely infatuated with her teaching style. By far one of the most engaging and personable teachers I've ever had. It completely amazes me how a teacher can be so completely oblivious to the discontent of the pejorative of the students. If multiple classes of students are disheartened in their career paths you've failed as an educator.
very confusing.
She's a good professor teaching a difficult subject in a difficult manner. That doesn't warrant her to be criticized in the manner of all the prev reviews. I study for this class and get above 70 on all the exams and as a computer science major this class is way easier than my other classes. Honestly just put in the work and you'll be good!
Hands down the least helpful professor I've had at Davis. She doesn't care! It doesn't seem like she wants to be teaching and she wants you to pretty much teach yourself. I wish there was a way to make a formal complaint but she probably has tenure so it won't matter. You probably won't be able to avoid her so if you end up taking her SELF STUDY
evil incarnate. exams literally do not cover what she teaches in class. horrible. how does she expect students to learn what is not taught. I regret coming to uc Davis, seems like all profs here only want you to dry hump the material to pass . hate it here so much.
Reads directly from overly detailed slides for an intro course which is impossible to memorize. Exams ask about very specific processes and details often glossed over or barely reviewed in class and discussion. Confusing and rushed explanation and lectures, office hours mostly aren't helpful. Avoid at all costs. Horrible course and lecturer.
Doesn't deserve all of the 1 star ratings. Was a fine professor, explained info on slides well. Also had plenty of time in class for questions and exam q's were very fair. Allowed full sheet for midterms and 3 for final. Anyone failing this class shouldn't be blaming her, its a tough subject and they need to get it together.
Great professor! The other reviews are just lazy complainers, it's an intro biology with chemistry emphasis course obviously it is going to be a bit difficult but manageable if you study. She does not deserve the reputation she has, it is heartbreaking to see all this undeserving slander of a professor. I recommend this amazing professor!
She was great.. just crushed my dreams of becoming a doctor. No big deal, though. Love her as a person!
You could do every assignment, discussion, even iClicker question, and attend all lectures. And you could still fail the class due to exams, would avoid the class at all costs do not take the class with her, otherwise lectures were okay no so confusing, but exams needed very in depth knowing of every question, grade cutoff lowered saved me
She is rated this low for a reason. I took her because I had no other choice. If you're in this position, it'll be okay. Just lock in and make sure you study outside of lecture. You get 3 cheat sheets on the final and 1 per midterm. She's not the best at lecturing, but her slides are alright.
honestly not sure what all the hate is for? shes not the greatest professor, but honestly she's completely fine. her slides are kinda disorganized, but she moves at a slower pace and answers a lot of questions. the materials on the slides are what's on the exam. you get a lot of cheat sheets as well!
