I would recommend anyone take a class from Parilla. She has very clear expectations and you always know exactly what is expected of you. Not like some other psych professors.
She was semi-interesting, but not clear about grading. Very dissappointed.
Do not ever take psychology of diversity from this professor. She should call the class psychology from the perspective of a bigoted latina. Her curriculum was very biased, and her grading was too. Who wants to do tons of work and get a bad grade?
Attendance is paramount. An A is attainable. In this class you will here some unique views and gain a perspective of how other people think, these are insightful and worth thinking about. Nontheless this teacher doesn't seam to be open to other points of view outside her realm of thinking. goodclass
very unclear and boring

I did pretty bad on exams and assignments but I still pulled the class off. Parilla is very approachable and understanding, she is great for a freshman for that reason alone. Take her for 1010 it will mean less worry for you.
Oh man I dreaded going to this class. Every day she popped out another boring generic power point presentation and talked about how "Oh that was way before your time" and the famous "Well in Puerto Rico we do it differently" Not only to mention that almost all of the tests were taken directly out of the text so you had to memorize the book.
Kokal is a terrible teacher. She can't stay with her own sylibus and changed it in the middle of the semester. Also I think she hates men. Steer clear!!
I really liked the diversity class I took and think Parrilla is a good prof. I like her teaching style and the fact she is flexible with the course work.
She is pretty dry in terms of how she lectures. She also can be a little intimidating at times. So if you want to be entertained then she's not the teacher for you. However, she does have good stories that help you remember the material. Her tests are usually pretty straight forward as well.
I liked this professor. She was nice and funny and had good ways of remembering hard concepts. Sometimes she was a little unclear about what was due when... but she moved test dates back so we could actually understand and was fairly flexible. You do need to know your book a lot and she wont babysit you but she's a good teacher.
She always wants students to answer questions, but if you don't say exactly what she is looking for she ridicules you. Also likes to think she grew up in Puerto Rico, but she graduated at Roy High. She does not test you on anything she lectures on! The test is straight from the test book. Lectures are pointless and boring. No need to attend cl
Every exam she gives, she gives you the question a week before. So you look in the book for the answer. Very easy class. She doesn't really like guys, so I had to work my butt off to impress her.
I loved this teacher she always had great stories in class. Her lectures were intertaining and very helpful. She gave you study guides for the tests with the exact questions from the test. She is always willing to help you succeed. I would recommend this teacher.
Very boring, daily dry lectures with powerpoints. Test questions not based on vocab, rather random crap out of the book. If you ask her a test related question, she won't help you.
She was funny and interesting, but her tests didn't come from the textbook, but from assessments she gave out, so get your classmates assessments. Also you never know if there will be an assignment in class, so be wary of that.
99% of tested material comes from book. Classes are mostly discussion of current events with brief overviews of material that will be on test. Group paper was fine but depends on who you are working with. Nice lady, expects you to read every chapter and expects class room discussion and thoughts from everyone. In-class assignments are the main reas
She tells a ton of stories as examples. Which rocks because she uses previous psych patients as her examples.
I loved her class she was very intertaining, she opened the conversation up so we can talk and give our own experiences. Let us use a cheat sheet for the test and she gave us the questions that we were going to be tested on, easy class, very interesting. Not required to attend every time, but you probably won't since it is highly interesting.
I found this professor to be disorganized, and on occasion, rude. Although exams were not difficult, I would not attend another of her classes.
She lost many of my classmates assignments/tests. She keyed my online assignments wrong. They were only worth one point each for doing them. When I emailed her to question the grading she said I had to go to her office, she fixed the grade, but a week later she emailed me back to say that I had an A and questioning if and why I wanted to meet.
Online class. Not too very hard if you read the book and study the power points. There was not a lot of homework, and the paper is done as a group. She is a fair to easy grader. I really enjoyed the class.
Awesome teacher!!!! LOVED her! Her class was so fun, and she has the greatest stories, all of which have to do with psychology. Very easy to work with. She's also very understanding if you miss class and helps you get back on track. I wish she taught more classes!
This is the best teacher on campus and possibly EVER. She's willing to work with you on any level and understands what students are going through. I've had her for 3100, 4380, 3140 and she's always been consistent. Highly recommended, wonderful person and amazing teacher.
Worst professor I've ever had. The syllabus online wasn't for the right semester, or even the right year. Completely unavailable. Questions on tests are worded really weird, and even when you memorize the assessments don't expect to do well. Lectures are dry. She seemed very biased and bitter. I will never take a class from her again, beware!
She is a good teacher, stays to the point. However, the assessments are not on Chitester, but Blackboard. I kept forgetting to take those. Study the book and the Powerpoints. I disliked the group assign because you have to track down the chosen movie.
Professor Maria Parrilla de Kokal is one of the best teachers that I have ever had. She is deeply caring, inspirational and helpful in her teaching methods. I would highly recommend Maria for any of her classes at WSU and hope to take more classes from her in the future.
Have taken a number of classes from this professor both in the classroom and online. WORST PROFESSOR EVER! Syllabus is never dependable. She will not help you understand anything. She says "you're getting an A what are you worried about." Really?!
Terrible teacher. She does not explain any assignments you have to remind her what is due. All she cares about is her past and how she is from Puerto Rico. She spends the whole class talking about worthless stories no one cares about. AVOID!
This professor is very unorganized and makes the class much harder than it should be. She is constantly mixing up dates for assignments and exams, and wasn't very helpful for preparing for our exam. Her lectures are terribly boring and most of the time all she talks about is how she is from Puerto Rico. I would avoid taking classes from her agai
I took her class online and found that she was a horrible communicator. Our whole class would have questions, but her lack of communication left us in the dark a lot of the time. Her test were also ridiculously long (150 questions is way too much in my book). She is a fair grader, but I will avoid her classes in the future.
I really liked her. Her stories were interesting, and she was pretty laid back about assignments during summer term.
She was very rude, and often just walked away if you asked her something after class. She lost 4 of my assignments before grading them. The group project was a mess with terrible instructions and she was unwilling to answer questions. Many people dropped, so some groups only had 1 or two people while others had 4, to do the same amount of work.
She is a cool person, but not a good teacher. I had her for the summer semester with 3 hours classes, she told personal stories for at least 2 hours, and rarely taught anything, she dropped assignments because "the class wasted time". I had fun in her class but, I learned more in one day from the group presentations than I did from her.
Okay, so she is unorganized. She still is an AWESOME teacher. She is very helpful, and open to suggestions about tests and her teaching methods. I would recommend her to anyone!
A bit unorganized, but it's understandable. She was really nice and helped me out A LOT. She's pretty strict, but it helped me stay on track. I've taken three classes from her, and I love her style of teaching! I recommend her for sure.
HORRIBLE teacher. Hated this class. Got to the end of the semester and even though she hadnt covered all of the chapters they were still on the test. I memorized the assessments, and still did not do well on the tests. Does not provide study guides.
I enjoy listening to her story because it was easy for me to relate. Also it help me remember what terms was what when she would tell stories. I would recommend her to anyone.
If I said unorganized that would explain it to a T.I didn't know what my grade was till the end of the semester.Till the end of the it I had 3 assignments out of everything we had to do that was graded.Test dates didn't follow the syllabus and neither did assignment dates. She was late to class more than on time to class, which was so frusterating.
Parrilla is hard to get a response from unless she is in her office. I emailed her many times for a variety of reasons and rarely got a response. I never knew my grade until the end of the semester. She came late most of the time and sometimes started classes up to ten minutes early. Nice lady, disorganized class. Take at own risk.
I probably wouldn't take another class from her again. She's nice and her lectures are entertaining, but she's so disorganized. She rarely ever responds to emails. She threw a curve ball and assigned a crossword and four different essays for the final when we were used to 50q multiple choice tests. Finals aren't the time to get "creative".
Pretty boring. Speaks soft so get a seat at the front.
Dr. Parrilla de Kokal was a frustrating teacher for me. She was unclear about and often changed assignments, all the tests were a different format and she missed class several times. I would not recommend her as a teacher.
Professor "PdK" rarely makes it to class on time, is incredibly unorganized, and rarely follows her syllabus. Class time is spent listening to feminist rants and useless personal stories. Comments and questions in class are perceived as unwelcome, yet she wonders why nobody participates. NO feedback is given until the end of the semester.
Loved the style of teaching and sense of humor! Great easy class.
I love Prof. Parrilla de Kokal! She is a great lady and a great teacher. Sometimes her assignments seem to be busy work, but that is my only complaint. Take her class. You won't regret it! :)
Never truly informed us about what was on tests or how to do assigned homework until the day before it was due. She would chat in class (interesting but unhelpful) instead of going over material. To make up for it she would post a video lecture that we had to take notes on and turn in. It was a very easy class, but I did not learn all that much.
This was an easy class and very fun. There was weekly home work and a couple of big assignments but not hard. The Professor would babble on about stories which got pretty boring. And the Professor showed up late to class a few times too (like 40 minutes late) And would give in class assignments so going to class was necessary. She was really nice!
Her tests are all write in essay questions, fortunately she gives you review questions that have the test questions amongst them. She gives quite a boarding lecture but its a pretty easy class.
Very nice lady who is very passionate about child psych. She has a lot of personal stories that are interesting, although not always relevant to the topic. She gives terminology quizzes for each chapter and all the Exams are in essay form. She gives a study guide with all the possible essay questions, so if you know all those, you're golden.
Hated her class. She's okay at explaining things in class but she doesn't read e-mails and if she does, it takes her days to get back to you. Not very willing to help.
Oh my goodness this lady is rude and has no sympathy for people. This is a class that you'll need to be at everytime it is held. Tons of in class assignments that you can't make up if you aren't there. But if you do the work you can pull off a B or higher.
I loved this class. It was not an easy class but I learned so much from it. She was AWESOME about returning emails, and answering questions after class. She did not accept late assignments, but that was not a problem for me. I for sure would take a class from her again.
She was an great lecturer, she really helped you understand material. The only thing is that assignments, projects, papers, etc. are NOT laid out. You have to guess what she wants.
Easy A. Just show up to class and do the work and you will get a good grade.
I loved the set up of this class: attendance optional, terminology quiz each week, and only 4 essay exams with only 4 questions on each (she gives you all the possible questions on test), and 1 group paper. Great professor. She is passionate and helpful. Take from her! Highly recommend this professor!
Every single thing in this class are group projects. She is very disorganized but easy going. She is a great easy teacher who gives you the possible the questions for the test and the tests are essay questions. Quiz every other day in class that kills your grade if you miss it, so don't be late. Lectures were mainly stories.
Very nice teacher, not very organized. The only reason i showed up to class was because there are random in class assignments. If it wasnt for that i wouldnt show up, you learn absolutely nothing in class. Dont bother buying the book just buy the Mc-Graw Hill Connect cd. Got a good grade but felt like i wasted my time. Still a very nice lady though
She is a nice lady. This was an easy class, She doesn't really give a test, she ask us to write two essay papers only (mid term and final). overall I like this professor. The only thing that you are going to be doing is reading articles a lot.
I wasn't particularly interested in Psychology until I took Kokal's class. She's interesting and she's funny. I had a lot of respect for her. Her class was fun. Book is needed, but you can purchase the online version for less money. You need to study, especially for the tests. She helped me when I had questions. Don't skip this class though.
Very humorous, and good at explaining difficult material in a different prospective. However, the class is taught right out of the book, and it is grueling to get through the weekend assignments. She is willing to help out if needed, but on a tight schedule. Don't miss the classes, and make sure you listen closely to her assignments.
This professor is very condescending. The entire class stayed quiet most of the time because anyone who had anything to say was made to feel like an idiot unless they said exactly what she was looking for. Attendance is necessary but not because the lectures are crucial. She does in class assignments at random times to make sure people come.
She is such an awesome professor. I speak English as my second language and she helped me to be very successful in this class. I recommend everyone to take this class.
I took 2 block hybrid class because I wasn't passing one class & it was worth it. Class was not mandatory or needed, but there are in class assignments. Assignments online are due every week by Sunday, it's practically busy work. you can work ahead. 2 tests, 50 questions, the study guide gives you the questions. Better than all other psy classes.
As a hybrid block class it was pretty easy. Kokal spends most of class time sharing personal stories rather than teaching the subject, however. Two 50-question exams with study guides, some in-class assignments, plenty of online homework, and 1 week long stress assignment made up our class. All very easy and doable as long as you put in the time.
Kokal was great!! I took her hybrid course so class was over in half the amount of time. I learned so much, I would definitely take another from her! She definitely knows what she is talking about but when she lectures she's funny and makes it relatable. Also, I had a lot of problems come up and she worked with me super well.
I loved PDK, I would take another class from her in a heartbeat. Her lectures were always interesting. Make sure that you read your book. She does in class assignments so you need to make sure that you are in class. I looked forward to this class every week and I would recommend her to anybody.
Really nice professor. She helps you to success .
Assignments are confusing and vague. None of the material seems to actually go together and is just randomly spread throughout the class. The first assignment is a group assignment and very confusing on what you are actually supposed to do. There are a lot of assignments and she frequently changes the due dates on you without notice.
PDK was hard, but not like, so hard I can't pass. Her class was tough, but if you study, you will be just fine. Her objectives are CLEAR AS ICE. She sends out an announcement weekly to let you know what's going on. She's very fair. Most of your grade is the tests, which is how most psych classes are anyways.
Great professor! Easy to work with, and very caring. Would definitely take another class from her.
Awful teacher, tells stories that don't relate to the material.I got better grades on the test when I didn't go to class. However, if you skip class you'll miss pop quizzes and in class assignments that you can't make up. I would definitely recommend an online class over this. The material is easy but the teacher is confusing
I loved this professor! Her use of stories kept me engaged and laughing in her late afternoon hybrid class. She is very good at explaining concepts and her beliefs about the world really show in her teachings. Readings where super easy and related directly to the topics we were learning. 10/10 would take her class again!
Took it second block. Lectures are a little boring sometimes but I would show up and take notes and that helps. NO late work. Only two tests. 13 homeworks and a few other assignments, some in class. Glazes over some things but does a good job for such a difficult topic to teach at such a basic level. Stay organized!
I thought her stories were very interesting since she is a real psychologist she would often involve crazy stories about her clients and apply them to class concepts which I thought was very interesting. My friends weren't too excited about her but I actually enjoyed it and thought she was funny. Just pay attention when reviewing for tests!
Prof Parrilla de Kokal was a wonderful choice. Her lectures were very interesting and she would share stories to the class that helped connect course concepts to real life. There are 100+ question assignments due almost weekly, a few papers, a few small in class assignments, and a few tests. This class required effort but it was well worth it.
She is a very nice woman. The class is incredibly easy. There are online segments to the textbook that must be done each week, and they take between 1-2 hours, but they are very easy to complete. I usually threw on a movie while I did them. Other than that, it's just lecture and tests
Professor Parrilla de Kokal is amazing. She is passionate about what she teaches. She tells a lot of stories that are real examples of what she teaching, helps you apply what you are learning. I would take any class from her.
This online class is kind of high maintenance. PDK has you do online group projects that are a pain. It is very difficult to coordinate a group project with a bunch of random people online. The tests are easy and the content is not complex, but the group projects are a headache.
Participation matters. Textbook reading. Engage in class discussions or she'll believe students are behind - pop quizzes. Confusing on certain due dates but use either Canvas or ask questions to stay up-to-date. Lectures are relevant to power-point presentations discussed in class. T/F from text and four essay questions in every exam. Fond of PDK!
I took her hybrid half semester course which was great. Since it was three hours once a week it was very lecture heavy. She tells great stories to go with the lessons. She is easy to get a hold of, very understanding, and always open to talk if you need it. Loved her as professor.
PDK was an excellent professor. The lectures are fun and informative. However, if any assignments are missed, your grade will fall quickly. Don't miss class. Also, the tests are weighted heavily, so if you don't do well, your grade will suffer there too.
Overall this was a great online class! As usual in an online class the biggest challenge was the group project. I loved the professor and the fact we got to know her even though we were online. That is a rare find in online courses.
She was helpful, straightforward, and knew her stuff. She explained concepts in a way that I could remember them with little effort. She was hilarious. I loved her stories! They would stick in my brain and help me during tests. Important to go to class. She would give random "being there" points that helped my grade. Loved her as a professor.
I loved this class! Psychology is not my major but Professor Parrilla de Kokal made it so interesting. She is an amazing teacher, she really knows her stuff, but more than that she knows how to teach. She is great to work with and is genuinely interested in her students success. I took the hydride course, I would take it again in a heartbeat.
Easy class . She posts all the questions to the tests online so once you find out all the answers it's a good study guide . She does do random in class partication though and Online homework every week
Professor PdK made this class fun and interesting. You are given one assignment and one quiz each week. The one midterm comes directly from the quizzes. She is super caring and willing to work with you about your grade.
I thought she was awesome given the fact that if i hadn't already taken this class in high school, i probably wouldn't have passed. She wants you to succeed. Very funny. Book is mandatory!
Offers very little interaction with her online class. Seems she's just taken her in-class materials and pasted it online with no explanations. Assignments had to be changed after posting for online adaptation & when I asked a question I just got the part of the assignment copy and pasted back to me. Easy A if you do the homework.
This class was kinda eh. Mostly just slideshows and exams. Not hard but also not a great time.
unfair professor
