Take organic chem from her if you're going to have to take it
Very good teacher....somewhat boring, but eh when isn't chem boring?
Horrible Teacher!
I came out of it with a B but I had to work really hard for it. She has tv reviews... Watch them and memorize them.
She gives really good notes with detailed lectures but rarely works through equations with us and if she does, she moves REALLY REALLY fast. I had to attend another lecture later in the day along with hers in the morning to fully understand..
Doesn't need to teach anymore. She said if I did the homework, went to class and took notes, and studied at least two hours a day I would get at least a B in the class. I did all that she asked and got a D.
man, this lady is crazy. Good Detailed notes given at 90000 mph! And she confuses herself sometimes. Her TV reviews are good and bad. I do them with her and they're increadibly easy, but the tests arnt anything like them.
CAN NOT TEACH
Mediocre teacher at best. She really understands what shes doing bud i dont think anyone else can follow her that well

An outstanding teacher! I HATED Chemistry in High School and just couldn't understand it. But her methodical notes and teaching style really broke down the concepts for me so that they were clear and concise. Take Chem I and II with her if you can.
Thick accent. not a whole lot of examples. Marie puts everything down on paper. if that's your thing go for it. i like to be taught. Aakeroy is better. hands down. I fell asleep almost every day in Paukstelis's class. go with aakeroy.
Very open to suggestion, open to helping students learn. Did better in her class than Aakeroy's class.
A great teacher. If you see her after class she is very willing to assist you. If you miss class she will even give you a copy of her notes. Maria Paukstelis and Yasmin Patel are the best Chem 1 and 2 teachers.
She is very monotonic, if you can stay awake in her class then I respect you.
I hated chemistry in high school and loved it when I took her class. So organized and clear, and she'll help you too if you need it.
A fantastic teacher, in my opinion. Helped me to understand chemistry better than any other chem teacher I've had. Detailed notes, and televised review sessions that are VERY helpful.
She is a horrible teacher. All she does is write the same stuff out of the book. Just read the book and you will probably do better than actually listening to her babble on. She seemed inconvienenced by any questions anyone would ask. I HATED HER and this class. Thanks for making me hate chem.
She is very boring as far as lecture. Its like reading the outline of the chapter.
didn't explain things well
Great teacher
Class/tests very hard. Tries very hard to teach well, is easy to talk to, will help you if you ask. Must do extra work on own to suceed. Be prepared on tests to figure out problems never encountered before. Lecture is not super boring, esp. compared to Raj. I would recommend as a teacher.
Really works w/you to help you, sometimes accent makes it difficult to understand chem-specific vocab. Loves to teach, you can tell
I hated here. Her test are insane and horrible. Watch out for the trick questions which are every question.
inflexible and mean spirited, I used to love chemistry and because of her, now I can't stand it, not a horrible teacher, but not very clear at times
Not my favorite professor. I don't like her exams and she doesn't take critism well.
She makes a lot of mistakes in her lectures... just hope you have a classmate that can always correct her. Her tests are strange and so inconsistent that studying past exams isn't a big help. I'm sorry if you have to take a class from her. On the plus side, she does give better notes than some professors - but use a pencil.
Not a good teacher. She curved the class A to a 92 percent, yes that is right. My 90 percent was not an A.
She is a very good teacher. Her class is hard if you don't put in the effort, but with some work you will learn a lot!
Being an okay person doesn't make you a good teacher. Mary is okay, but a bad instructor. Let's talk about the test averages for fall 2006...Test1=70%, Test2=64%, Test3=55%, Test4=48%... Doesn't she teach the material on the test? NO!
She can't teach the material well and her grading is hard.
Prepare to listen to why guns are bad, global warming, why America is evil, and why it's all your fault. Yes, in chemistry class. She should move back to whatever Communist country she came from.
Professor Paukstelis was kinda helpful outside of class, but in the lectures she made quite a few mistakes and had the class correcting her often. Some things you just had to figure out when test time came around with no explanation of how to do it. However my lab GTA was awesome. If you can get Ting Kuo as a GTA, you're good.
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! She is awful, her tests are NEVER over the material we covered. She is also very unpleasant.
do not be too tough to her. She is a normal human with thousands of students, teaching CHM I & II. Be quiet when she is speaking; raise your hand when she goes too fast. Give her some helpful commends or suggestions to her. She is a good teacher years before, and she can be better with our help.
If you are into getting tricked on every test, then she's your gal. Lecture notes are easy and I had the same material in Chem I in High School, but she doesn't teach it well, and then the throws in crazy things on top of that to send you for a ride. If you take her, examine each question over and over, and when you still get tricked, don't be mad
She is slooooow in lecture with figuring things out. She often stumbles over her ineptitude. On her tests, she gives formulas that would be beneficial to memorize (like going for F to C), but makes you memorize useless crap like solubility tables and other BS. Overall, her tests are meant to trick and suck.
she makes test impossible to pass
needs to get the****out of her mouth and learn how to teach
She puts material on the test that was not covered nor expected the students to cover on their own, puts test questions with no correct answer on test and when this is brought to her attention, she admits her mistake but will not concede any points, she counts it wrong for everyone, lousy teacher currently on probation b/c 2 many stdnts are failing
Half of tests contain answers that are meant only to trick the students
If you can avoid taking chem 1 until the spring, do so. She is a horrible teacher and loves to trick students. But don't complain cause then she spends the first 10 min of class complaining about how we complained.
She is a horrible teacher, her tests are hard and she doesn't explain anything well.
Horrible Teacher..all of the questions on her test were trick questions. The exams are almost impossible to get above a C on. Take chemistry with Yasmin!!
Paukstelis was my favorite teacher of all time. She was so helpful, and only wanted to test our knowledge on the subjects.
She says that there are no "trick questions" but there are definitely unfair questions.
Her tests do not covor the material given in class. She makes the test too hard for her students.
I want to put a good word out there for Mrs. Paukstelis! She's my fav. teacher ever! True, her class is TOUGH and u have to work HARD to do well in class, but she is so so helpful if u just ask her for help. I wouldn't be able to pass the class if I didn't go to her office hours for help. And she has "Friday Funnies" every Friday! :) She's goi
Dr. Paukstelis is one of the best professors I have had the opportunity of having. She will go out of her way to help you. Anyone tearing her down on here didn't put forth the effort and I must say anything you hear about her is far from the truth. I was skeptical going into the class but in the end, I'm glad she taught me. Thanks Dr. Paukstelis!
She should have retired quite a while ago. Today she claimed that she might commit suicide this weekend over the stress from the I-Clicker system. Seriously? She has no idea how unprofessional she looks standing in front of several hundred people cussing at the computer, then yelling into the microphone for the class to be quiet and respect her.
A word on tests: Be careful, during class and on practice tests she wont make you do conversions b/w stuff like mmHg and atm but on the tests she will. go back and check all of your answers no matter how much you think you got them all right, you will find lots of easy mistakes just read the questions very carefully and you will do fine.
Dr. Paukstelis has to be one of my favorite teachers at K-State. Get to know her and let her know you care. She will bend over backwards for you if you're committed. I learned way more with Dr. Paukstelis in Chem 2 than I did with Dr. Patell in Chem 1. She may not be the easiest but by far and without a doubt is the best. <3
Worst teacher ever!! She's so confusing and VERY rude!
I think she is more difficult in her tests than she needs to be to accurately assess knowledge of chemistry. Her lectures are average. I bet her office hour help is great if you show interest and effort. She should focus more on preparing students for trck questions.
Dont care for how she teaches.
I did not like her at all very bad teacher moved to fast and when questions were asked she answered them be she was not clear at all with the explanation. Almost made you feel stupid.
Not fun... I had her for both chem 1 and chem 2. She was alright if you paid attention in class, but I hear there are much better teachers on campus. She was vague. She's a nice person, but not a great teacher.
Not a good teacher.
I dont care for her teaching style at all. Go to class just to get the notes read to you. Test dont accurately portray your knowledge.
GET OUT OF THIS CLASS WHILE YOU CAN. Paukstelis is a terrible teacher. Wait for a spot in Patel or Smith's classes. I don't know one person who got above a C in chem. I would study really hard and this I did well on a test and then fail it. She's a worthless teacher and this class will really mess with your GPA.
Her tests had lots of information that was not covered in class. I thought about changing my major b/c i was so frustrated on some of her tests.
She has a lot of supporting marterials with that class that are really helpful, just read the chapter and do the suggested problems and you'll be fine
Just go over the practice tests the day before the real tests and you'll be fine. The lab sucks way more the the lectures, you don't even have to go except for in class quizes on fridays that are pretty much just people shouting out the answers but count for points.
GET INTO ANOTHER SECTION, or drop her class!! Absolutely the most unhelpful teacher I have ever had! I went in after receiving "not great" grades on the first couple tests. She told me that I had no chance to do well and that she didn't have time to help me. Good teacher, I think NOT.
Absolutely the worst teacher at KSU. Very unhelpful and all the questions on her tests are meant to confuse students. Average of the first (and easiest) test was a 61% and she claimed that it was all the students fault. Very Unfair, Enroll in Smith or Patels section!
Don't waste your time and anergy on this class, ENROLL IN A DIFFERENT SECTION!! Caused me frustration and endless amounts of studying, only to have me fail and need to retake it. Awful teacher!
If you really like Chem, DON'T take it with Maria. She is a really nice woman, but her chem class is very confusing. I am a student that gets A's and B's and her class was hard. If you have a chance to take it with Patell then you should do so. DON'T TAKE IT WITH MARIA!
Mrs. Paukstelis is a horrible teacher. She is unprofessional, rude, and she always conducts class with a disheveled look on her face. I would study for hours only to receive dreadful scores on my exams. The exams are very rigorous and simply too difficult for students without an advanced knowledge of chemistry. Beware of this class
Hard teacher.
Knows her stuff, and puts clean notes up during lecture. But overall my impression is terrible, she is not a very nice lady and her tests are on an unfair level. I would recommend taking Chem I & II from another professor.
She just wants you to fail.
If you can get past her rudeness, ridiculously hard exams, and lectures that are incomprehensible, that by all means take this class. Just be aware that your gpa will be affected drastically.
She is the most amazing professor I have ever had and I know without her help, I would have never even passed Chem I!
Hardest class I have every taken. Whenever you go to her for a problem, its always "not my problem." Got an F.
Paukstelis gets a bad wrap, but she's actually a good teacher. Chem isn't an easy class, but if you read the book, do the daily review problems, and problems in the back of the book, the class is a piece of cake!
Best teacher at KSU. She bases her teaching on understanding and not memorization. she gives out good notes and comprehensive review questions.
Waste of my time and money!
Quality instructor. Moves through material swiftly, but very straight forward. Go to every class and record the lectures and you will be set. Exams are usually based on her lectures, NOT Ackeroy's.
Took Chem I from Patel and Chem II from Paukstelis. Prefered Paukstelis. Don't be scared off by the reviews here. Chem classes are a weed out for a lot of people.
I hate chemistry with a passion, but she made it understandable. She was very approachable, and willing to help any time I had questions. If you are willing to learn, and not just coast through class, she is a good instructor. Just keep up in class and you'll be fine. If your a deadbeat, and worthless, she's probably not right for you.
Worst teacher I have ever had.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had...on our first exam, the average was 68%. Then, in the following lecture, she blamed the class. This is obviously the professor's fault. She can't be understood, and rebukes those who ask her questions in class. PLEASE, F
By far the worst teacher I have had. on our first exam, the average was 68%. Then, in the following lecture, she blamed the class. This obviously is not the class' fault. She can't be understood, and rebukes those who ask her questions in class. PLEASE, FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR GPA AND SANITY, ENROLL WITH YASMIN PATELL, SHE IS A TRUE PROFESSIONAL.
I love Chemistry & this class is hard. I spend countless hrs.studying, Got a poor grade on my 2nd test & asked for help, I go to all the classes, take notes, do the review ?'s & practice! She told me I should know it then. Wants us to think critically, I am just learning this, whatever. Some ?'s on exam diff. from practice ?'s,makes exams difficult
Straight forward: not a very good teacher, not terrible either. Come to class and take notes for sure, but she likes to trick people on her tests. Read the questions thoroughly and if you can, just avoid her class and take it from Pattel.
I don't think she wants me to fail, but yes, the test averages are in the 60s, and then she blames the class! She does not understand that her tests are hard! She is nice and tries to help. but doesn't prepare you very well for her insane tests! Then when the average is low, she will say, "Why class? What happened? You need to study more!" yeah...
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. I studied for hours. I got good grades on the homework but then when it came time to test I got very low scores. To study, I went to the tutors every day, did the homework over again, and never missed a class. I tried to talk to her and she was extremely rude. I changed my major because of this class.
Avoid this teacher!
A pretty average teacher, but her tests are rough. As everyone else has said, our class's tests scores were in the 60s. If a class of 230 students has a test average of 60, I'm going to say there's something wrong with the test. At least she's going to curve the class, even if it's just by 3% or so.
AVOID HER! What she teaches on the slides account for 10% or less of the tests. Most of the questions come from the book. The average test score of the entire class when I took it was a 60% at best. And she blames the scores on the students lack of studying.
Did great on the first three tests, but she gave us the 4th the day after coming back from Thanksgiving break. The average on that test was lower than a 60. Blames her students for the low test scores.
it is vary impotent to study outside of class or you will not keep-up. the tests are difficult
I would not take from her ever again. She does not care if students understand or not.
Bad professor. Put notes online for you to print, then reads them to you in class, underlining everything as she reads. Tests are difficult, even after studying. Smart lady, just can not teach.
A little scatter-brained at times
Well, notes are great!!! Teaching is AWFUL! all she does is read the notes off and under lines things that are already bold. Her tests are hard, idk how the hell i pulled off a B
If you didn't understand something she said during lecture (which will happen a lot), don't bother asking her to clarify. Even if you can get her to answer your question repeat what she said. Definitely knows her stuff, just can't teach.
Good lector, but the tests are hard. Be prepared, do the book work, and know every possible scenario for a problem and you will do well. STUDY a lot.
I can't explain how much I encourage you to take Chem 1 and 2 with someone else. She is not helpful outside of class. Her notes and lectures are a joke. Tests are made to trick you. In my honest opinion, she is one of the worst instructors I have ever had on any level of education. Please heed my warning. Avoid at all costs.
I had her for Chem 1 and 2 and I really liked her. Sometimes she was hard to understand and it was little confusing, but with the SAS tutors and conferring with classmates, it was just like any other class. Come to class, pay attention, study and get help if you need it. Work hard and you will get a decent grade.
The class average on our last test was 50.5. nuff said
She acts as if the people in her class are chem majors and most of us don't care that much, then she flips out when the super challenging test she gives the class has an average in the 60s. Class to avoid if you can. If you do have to take Chem 210 at KSU try to get Smith; same tests, better teacher.
She's really not that bad. If you go to class and do the work, you'll do fine. She gives good notes to study from, take the recitation section to get good practice problems.
She teaches the material well, but when its test time it doesn't matter how much you've studied, the tests trick you as well as give you scenarios that you've either A never seen, or B have no clue how to do yet and shouldn't until Chem 2. This class is a joke with her. Please take my warning and hold off Chemistry 1 until your spring semester.
She is the worst teacher at KSU. She knows chemistry but does not care whether or not her students learn it.
go to class and study a lot, this isn't a class you can slide by in. A lot of people blame paukstelis for a receiving bad grades when honestly they probably don't put forth the effort required or don't ask for help
Even thought she made not be the best teacher and I did hate the class everyday, she still did care a lot for the students. It was tough but she basically made you a study guide for every test as long as you came to class and filled in your notes. Overall, as long look at the notes she makes for you you'll be fine and she is always happy to help.
Smart woman, terrible at relating the material to the class. Not interactive and simply confuses you on chemistry
horrible teacher
Cared for her students, no doubt. Horrible at relaying the information to them. I ended every class more and more confused. Couldn't drop the course for financial aid reasons but SINCERELY regret taking chemistry with her. AVOID AVOID
not very helpful
She doesn't care about the students at all. All she wants to do is research but she is required to teach at least one semester for the year. I asked her a question one time and she refused to help me. She acts like we already know the material even though we are supposed to be learning it. Avoid her as a teacher and go to someone else
Not the worst teacher I've had, but she was not good at teaching at all. In lecture she just reads off the notes she makes for each chapter and doesn't expand on concepts or give examples to help you understand. Not an impossible class but you really have to work at it to do well
I really liked Paukstelis. It's obvious she really cares about her students, and she was willing to help everytime I went into her office. She's not going to spoon feed anyone. You are going to have to work hard in this class. If you put in the effort to understand and study hard you will do very well in this class. She's a great teacher!
Horrible instructor. Did not relay the information in an understandable manor. Would not recommend.
You are going to have to work hard in this class but she is also very willing to help. If you set up an appointment she will go over problems with you and make sure that you are understanding the concepts. Do the lecture reviews and practice problems that she suggests in the book because sometimes they reappear on tests. You can't be lazy.
All she does is read parts of the book she put on a piece of paper to you in lecture and often REFUSES to answer questions.
I've had no problems with her so far, I'm in Chem 1 currently and find her notes and lectures very helpful. Just be sure to do the lecture reviews and homework and go in for help if necessary. A lot of people have been complaining ab her but she's really not that bad. Sometimes she isn't the friendliest, but she is willing to help if you go in!
I was scared to take CHM 210 because of her bad reputation here at KSU, but it's not true! She is an excellent professor and the lecture notes she provides are very helpful. Her homework questions give a nice preview of what to except on the exams and she seems like a nice person. I will definitely be enrolling in CHM 230 with her next semester.
Not terrible, but not good. For the most part she just reads notes off to you and does example calculations. Textbook isn't even needed because all the info is in the notes.
she is a nice lady and smart too, however she is clearly not the one who writes the tests and her lecture schedule is awful. we will have a test on monday, so on friday lets just review material of the new chapter... awful class/teacher. I have never done so poorly in any class ever.
She is a terrible teacher. She acts like we should already know the material and doesn't teach it, instead she just reads off of her notes and acts like we should know. The last two test averages have been in the 60s and if she was a good teacher this wouldn't be happening. I would highly recommend taking this in the spring.
She cares about her students. Reading the textbook, practicing, and studying are important for passing. I've heard she's changed her ways from the past. She presents the information clearly and is available to help. Class is mostly her reading the notes, which can get boring. Supported by a slew of tutors and TAs.
Prof Paukstelis gives many resources to study for your tests. She puts old tests, suggested problems, and lecture reviews online. If you practice with all of these and even do some practice problems out of the book, the tests are simple and it will be easy to pass the class.
Notes were very helpful
Wasn't helpful when asked. Doesn't really teach, just read her notes.
The notes I used in Chem 1 & 2 were her notes and they were very helpful. It does take effort to do well in this class and if you don't get it then you should try many different ways to get help. She cared and was always willing to reexplain the material.
Professor Paukstelis is a fantastic teacher. She explains topics very clearly, and goes over everything that will appear on the exams. She unfortunately gets a negative reputation by many students for being difficult/unhelpful, but I think these students are still in a "high school" type mindset, and expect good grades to simply be handed to them.
Very hard, emailed many times with questions, but never got a response. If you can take the class with a different professor, I highly suggest it.
so hard
She writes the notes that other professors use in their lectures, so it is easier to understand when coming from her. The lecture notes come straight from the book, so if you read the chapter before attending lecture, you will know which questions to ask. Tests are easier if you read the chapters in the textbook and do practice problems.
not very helpful I asked some questions and she said was in homework and relook at it
Dr. Paukstelis is a fantastic teacher. She is probably one of the only professors that gives you notes packets, multiple practice tests to study from, study reviews, review questions after each lecture, and more. Most professor's do not take the time to do as much as she has done. I feel like I have a learned a lot from her class
She covers material very fast and if you ask for help or questions she treats you as if you just asked the stupidest question imaginable. Take Chem 1 through a different professor if you want a good grade.
She always stays after class time to answer all questions.
she's a really good professor just that you have to work for your grades
I did not care for her a would recommend Patell
Hardest professor to understand. Never take the 7:30am class. Wort experience ever. I wish I would of just wait listed for patel. She tells you that the $180 textbook you are required to buy is too hard to understand. I found that her so called lecture notes were harder because its short worded and not explained. Get a tutor at the beginning.
I took this class and I must even after reviewing, having a tutor, and doing other things it was still a tough class. She is very hard to understand and she makes us feel like we should already know the material. Concepts with her are confusing. I recommend taking it with Patell if you were to take Chemistry. K-STATE Chem department is awful though
She records her lectures and puts them online so many students don't even bother going to class. Her lectures consist of her just reading off the notes. I didn't feel like she explained the material very well. The class moves very quickly and she doesn't make much of an effort to ensure that students are truly understanding what is going on.
I personally hated my Chemistry class with Paukestelis, she always talked at us like we were dumb. The tests were insanely hard, and she likes to make comments about how 'too many students are emailing her with easily solvable questions."
Dr. Paukstelis is a great professor! She is always there to help you with office hours, after class, and on her own time. She provides more than enough resources to help you succeed with flying colors but you have to be willing to work. It's a college class, treat it like one and you will do well! I had no problems this semester with paukstelis.
The tests are 25 multiple choice questions, so it's all or nothing.
She posts reviews and problems to help on tests, which are very helpful to succeeding on the tests. She takes time out of her day to help you and genuinely cares for students.
If you actually go to class and follow along, you will do fine! Don't be afraid to ask questions after class. She is very easy to get along with.
This is a difficult class, but she gives you everything that you need to do well in the class. She records the lectures, so if you don't understand something, you can go back over it. The tests aren't that bad, you just really need to pay attention. You have to work hard in this class. it's a college class, so treat it like one. Book not used
Overall an excellent professor. She makes you work for the grade, and if you slack your grade will show it. She gives you many tools to study for the tests where if taken advantage of, you will pass with flying colors.
I had Dr. Paukstelis for both Chem 1 and Chem 2 and I really enjoyed having her for both. This class requires self-advocacy. You need to do all the material she offers you to do well in this course. She doesn't allow her students to be lazy. In my opinion the people that rate her badly are those that are not willing to put in the work required.
Take notes with a pencil; she will consistently make mistakes during lecture. She is a good teacher who is eager to help her students, but still makes the course challenging. Use all the resources she gives you and you'll do well. The weekly homework will be a pain, however. She recently got the idea that doubling her assignments was beneficial.
The only reason her other rates are low is because most people have her first semester freshmen year and don't know how to do college yet. Honestly, she gives you EVERYTHING you need to be prepared for her exams, and if you put in the time her exams aren't hard. She puts tricks on her exams, but the material itself is covered very well.
I had the misfortune of taking this class with Dr. Paukstelis. She is kind, but when you really need help- good luck. Tests are weighted very heavily. So, if you mess up on her tricky tests, you're in trouble. I don't recommend. Go to Patell.
The tests are very hard. Expect to teach yourself by going to a tutor or reading the textbook. The lectures only will not prepare you for the tests. I would suggest taking the other chemistry teacher instead of Paukstelis.
If you're a pre-med major this should be a fairly easy course for you. Read her powerpoints and part of the book if you don't understand the material and you should be fine. She has tough tests and may not explain clearly some of the material but the book clears up what she can't. If you're not a science major, this is not the professor for you
Not a fan of working with SAC Students
She gives you all of the information that you need to be able to do well in this course. She never tests you over concepts that have not been discussed in class, and doesn't overload you with information that is essentially irrelevant to success in this course. I have to study a decent amount, but she has great review questions & answers.
Paukstelis is like your grandmother: willing to help, but doesn't know how.
Hard to understand, but overall helpful
Definitely not an easy course instructor to have coming in from high school. On the last exam out of 958 students not a single person got a perfect score. Come ready to work hard and study harder if you take Chem with Paukstelis.
Overall enjoyed her class. Chemistry is one of those classes that you have to study on your own a little bit. ( this is not high school where the teacher holds your hand and gives you homework every night) nothing is put one the exam that was not covered in class or lab. she doesn't assign anything out of the book but do the suggested problems.
The best thing about Pauk is probably her notes because they are so clear-cut. However, she barely puts a curve on your grade at the end of the semester, even when the average on a test is one percent above utter failure. She's cute like your grandma and gets hyped about electron formations but don't be fooled, this class is a tough one.
Great lecture notes
Paukstelis posts the lectures online, so if you already understand chemistry or like learning on your own then there is not a huge need to go to class. She is very receptive to questions and explains concepts clearly.
Attend the lectures if you want to do well. Good teacher, humorous at times. Textbook use not required but great for review if you want to do good on test, I figured that out too late. She's no longer teaching but I loved her as mine.
She doesn't teach very well, so you must pay attention to the lectures and actually read outside of class. Her practice tests do help a lot, but don't rely on them to be but 75% like the actual test.
