Organic Chemistry is a very hard class. She gives the class some personality. She is helpful and lenient. Expect lots of quizzes.

She is the best teacher ever for chemistry...and she explains everything so well...Her class may be hard, but she makes it fun and easy...
She is not an easy teacher, but it is because of the class. She used her old test all the time, and if you can hook up to some friend to get those test, you may be able to pull a high grade. Give her some sweet taste in class, it would help you to get her favor.
She is the teacher that inspired me to major in Chemistry. Her class is really hard but if you attend her lectures, you will understand everything that you need in order to pass the class. Her lectures are not as boring or confusing as the other chemistry classes I've taken.
Great teacher, Explains everything well, Very enthusiastic to be there, students are not a burden in her life, Tells you what sections to study for the tests, If you put in the work, you can get an A
Great teacher, sometimes tough. Her lectures are very organized. Just watch out for test #2!!

She is a great instructor and cares deeply for her students. The only problem is that she teaches a tough subject, but don't get me wrong...I love her as an instructor!
She is a great instructor and cares deeply for her students. The only problem is that she teaches a tough subject, but don't get me wrong...I love her as an instructor!
She is an awesome lady!
I love her class, because she is so hott!!!!!
I never opened the book she is that good you won't need to either.
She will make you earn your grade. You will have to have a strong grasp on the subject to just pass the class!
Easily the best teacher at Solano. Let me put it this way, I didn't buy the book and still got an A in the class. As long as you pay attention to her lectures and take good notes, the tests are straight-forward.
She made it clear that if I was not able to keep up with the rest of the class in class, that she could not take the time away from the whole class to explain something to me that everyone else understood.
Tough material, but the professor is great. This is perhaps the most difficult class at SCC. A lot of smart people in this class, which makes it very competitive. Although lab grade is part of the final grade, it doesn't quite make it up for the no curve.
Very lively and entertaining and helpful and aproachable teacher. Although the material is not that easy she will explain it in the best possible way she can. You can ask her questions and she will make time to make sure you understand the concept. She would demonstrate lab and go over lab questions. Pay attention in class and you'll pass the class
The sweetest teacher ever! But don't get that confused with being an easy class. Study hard
I absolutly dreaded having to take this class, but Maria was absolutly the BEST instructor to have had! She really helped me get thru the material and taught me how quality studying really pays off! Hats off to you Dr. Santiago!!!!
She rushed through alot of things. and also doesnt like to stop and help you if she feels its things you should know already. shes a nice person..but theres no curve. which is ridiculous when the class average on tests was in the low 40%...good luck taking this class. I think it would benefit most ppl to take this course elsewhere
She is awesome! The class is hard (as it should be) but she's so funny and sweet and she makes it clear what information you are expected to know. You don't absolutely have to read the book but you should, really. Read the material before class and it'll help so much. Sorry guys, if you fail this class it's your own fault.
Santiago is a very sweet teacher. Although, I feel there was def not enough time to take her exams..50 mins to take exams w/ lots of word probs and equations, it wasn't enough. I guess it's not her fault, there was a class b4 and after us..everyone was rushed. On a few of the exams more than half of the class had not finished their tests. Study har
Awesome teacher and very funny!! Soooooooo sweet. Was dreading taking this class, but she is so helpful and nice. Even though the material can be boring she makes the classes fun and interesting. The class is not easy though, you have to study really hard. Best Chem teacher at Solano!
Great teacher. Great person. Material is the same as CHEM 160, but she makes it easier to understand. Tests are tough and seem to long for just 50 minutes, but if you know the material well, 50 minutes will be enough.
Take another Chem teacher, 50mins isn't enough to finish all the problems. Since there's plenty! She doesn't grade on a curve! And, the class ave on some tests was 45%! Alot of students failed her class. Find a teacher w/ a longer lecture time. She says she'll try to give more time, never can since there's classes right b4 and after.
sorry guys! i know her exams were on the rough side, but i've got to admit, she's the most 'alive' teacher i've ever had in my college years!
She is one of the best teachers I have ever had!! If you don't understand it one way she will try another, and another and another. She's live and active in lecture, so you can't fall asleep no matter how you try. She is genuinely a great person!!
She is the best professor at Solano, she is very helpful and you don't need the text only to practice problems for test. She gives a lot of time for exams and if you had Chem 160 you will get an A in Chem 10. Attendance is a must.
Love, love, LOVED her, but I did think that the tests were a bit unfair. Very tricky, different every year, takes them back(!), and NO CURVE! She's a little disorganized at times, and I think I had a problem because my brain didn't work quite the way hers did. Studied my buns off, still could never pass the 80 mark! OUCH!
Very hard. Even if you think you studied a lot you still feel you do bad on the tests. No curve so you must work hard. 1/2 the class or more will drop. She is fun and lively in the morning so a class at 7am is not dredful.
Easier if you had chem 160. Havent had chem for years and felt way behind. tests are a little unfair... very tricky because of the wording. she is a very enjoyable teacher. in order to pass, you must attend class, and must study hard.
She is one of the best teachers at Solano! I miss her high spirits and her lectures are always a blast! She is truly a teacher that I would take over and over again! Really cares to make sure that you understand the material. Must take her!!! Took her both for 3&4 (as far as I know, the only teacher) :)
I love this teacher. The material is hard but she makes it fun. One of the only classes I could wake up early for. Study hard and read the book seriously. If you pass both semesters of Organic Chemistry you can go to the end of the year party which is a blast. Study smart find a study group and make good friends caus u r stuck with them 4 a year.
took chem 10 with her over summer. imagine..intro chem in 6 weeks. it was some what hard..of course easier if you study. and plus she made class really fun. great stories. btw..there was a high school girl in my table..im pretty sure she got an A in the class. hope that helps.
She was awesome! Who knew learning chemistry could be so entertaining? Her tests are hard and you have to know the material, this was not an easy class, but she is interested in your success. Very organized and on top of her business. Tests returned the next day! LOVED her!!
Santiago knows chemistry and it translates through her teaching skills.. Excellent professor, really wants her students to understand and love chemistry. She made the entire class laugh, great personality and above all else she cares about the students.
Ms.Santiago is by far my favorite teacher at Solano. She complains about getting old but she is very young at heart and is a beautiful woman. TAKE HER if you can. Organic chemistry is a very hard class but the majority of the exam material is covered in class, so take good notes and study hard and you might pass.
Santiago comes across as concerned if you do not understand the material, but don't get that confused with her being clear cut and a quality teacher. You'd be smart to get an outside tutor, devote at least 3+ hrs a day on this subject b/c lectures are confusing. Doesn't go by the book, doesn't let you keep exams to study from.
Such a nice lady, and very sweet too. If you study constantly you don't need to put as much time in as if you cram. Cramming will only work if you are smart. Much rote memorization, but her lectures make things tolerable. If you take OChem at Solano you have no choice but to take her, but it's fine because she's a good teacher.
She's a funny and good person, but not the greatest teacher. She sometimes gets behind then rushes teaching in the end. The examples she gives you in class are easy, but the test questions are hard and tricky. Some things on the test aren't covered in class. This class is a lot of work!
She's the best teacher ever! I took her a few years ago and loves her. She's makes a difficult subject very clear. She one of those teachers that will always stand out when you look back on all of your teachers.
Ok teacher. I've had better. She gets behind then rushes things later. She has favorites and looks down on some people. She's the only ochem teacher so u don't really have a choice. Her mult choice are weird and tricky.
She's a nice lady and loves her job, however don't let that fool you. You have to put in time and effort in this class in order to get the grade you desire. She does tend to favor students, usually those who do well in her class, and tends to grade easier on them. Her quizzes are nothing like her tests. Read the book and memorize pink sheets.
Maria is a wonderful teacher. She is very energetic and young at heart. Just finished taking OChem with her, and although her tests aren't easy, I would still recommend her. Although I wasn't one of her favorites, I still enjoyed her class. Memorize those pink sheets and read the book. Don't slack off or you might need to end up retaking the class.
She's funny.
I took her 6 week course over the summer. She did a good job of keeping the class interested in the subject. This is a fast paced course but she did a good job teaching all the material at a pace that was easy to keep up with. She is really funny and her exams were easy enough as long as you pay attention in class.
She is very nice and cares a lot about her students. O Chem is hard and she tries to help everyone succeed. Don't listen to those who says she has favorites. I bet those people just didn't try talking to her. Her tests are hard, so STUDY STUDY STUDY!
I love Santiago! OCHEM is not an easy class you have to pay attention to the class and take notes! I pass the first class and proubly pass her last sem of ochem. I did changed my study habits because you dont get by this class! If yo want to take baby ochem go somewhere else!
For most college students, Organic Chemistry will be the hardest class they ever take. Santiago is a fantastic teacher. She takes a very difficult subject and presents it in a clear and engaging fashion. Listen to her, take notes, and study every waking moment. There are no free rides in O.Chem.
She is incredible teacher... I really wish I took o chem without any other classes or a job so that i could fully dedicate myself to it. She made o chem such an interesting subject and one of my favorite teachers ever. Work hard in her class, and enjoy her joyous personality!
She is an excellent teacher who genuinely cares about how well her students do. Ochem really isn't difficult if you learn the basic mechanisms involved with each reactant, that is the key. I studied for only a couple hours the last two tests and earned grades way above average. Don't memorize reactions, learn how the electrons work and move.
After attending a real college, I realized Dr. Santiago is not very helpful OR professional at all. She spends 85% of her time texting her daughter (who goes to UCD) because her daughter needs help in her classes. She rushes teaching the material & is not clear or concise about her exams. She doesn't let you keep exams to study from either.
She's such a nice, smart, & a funny professor. Her tests are really really hard. They're nothing like the quizzes or homework.Grades are based on the exam scores. For chem 3, you have to pass it on ur own. She'll fail u even if ur one point behinde because she wants to make sure ur ready for chem 4. For chem 4,she'll probably pass u if ur off by few p.
Besides the fact that she was gone half the semester, she still expected us to know the stuff that we were not taught. tests are really hard and she even said she does not want to make them easier..
About the difficulty: It's Orgo--what do you expect? Professor was really clear and read students' faces--stopped to explain until concept understood. No curveball on test, as long as you do the work. Impression: She loves and cares about all her students. Would definitely recommend this professor over UC schools if you want to learn.
Definitely one of those classes where many bomb the 1st test, so do discussion packet before & after lecture. You'll hate Mastering Chemistry. She's hella friendly, SO willing to clarify & enjoys getting to know her students. Don't be afraid to ask questions! Grateful I didn't take this in a university. Small class size is beneficial!
Do NOT work in pairs for lab as there's emphasis on lab work. Some chem 3 rxns involved (reduction/oxidation). WONDERFUL professor! Couldn't have had a better ochem experience!
Excellent teacher. Tests are based majorly on her notes. Not strict and lenient. Pays special care to the needs of the students. Makes sure that students understand the material. Follow the lectures very closely. Is funny and cares about who you are as a person. Overall, an amazing and strong teacher who is very knowledgeable about the class.
Professor Santiago is a lovely human being with a pure, genuine interest in her students. She makes every effort to understand her students and tries to help them succeed in her class even to the point of going through her tests and adding points to students' scores. Fair grader, fun class, make participation count by doing work and you'll be good.
Professor Santiago is exactly what you are looking for in an instructor of this kind of material. She is very patient, thorough, a fair grader, doesn't test on material you haven't gone over. There is a reason this class transfers to the other schools such as UC Davis and UCSF. It is difficult class! But she gives you everything you need to succeed
Honestly, I was so scared taking her/this class in general but Prof Santiago made this class so much easier to learn. She makes us doing Mastering Chem, i hate it. Her tests are not the same as lecture but you just gotta study/read the book/lecture notes and the study area in mastering Chem.
Dr. Santiago is a gem to the university! So funny and caring! This spring semester I went through a lot and she was there to support me. Tough but fair!
I came here to complete prerequisites for my masters program and she almost ruined it. You can tell she picks favorites after the first exam, so if you dont do well prepare for her not to pay too much attention to you. I went to her a lot for help and she always seemed annoyed and wasnt very helpful. She makes A TON of mistakes in grading tests
I love her. She is amazing but her test are killer. Just study a lot and study groups will help you. If you miss class go get the notes from her during her office hour. Ask questions.
Yes, tests are hard but she is a great teacher. Once you take her first exam, most people improve on the next ones. As long as you take good notes and study hard, you should pass the class. She is super nice and is a great lecturer. Online HW is through Mastering Chem which sucks but other than that she is awesome.
Maria is the most wonderful chem professor. Her style of teaching is audio, visual and theatrical. The way she drew the steps of the reactions and acted out how the bonds moved made it a lot easier to understand, and she always made class fun. But O-Chem is quite hard, so be prepared to dedicate a lot of time to it and copy your lecture notes!
Wonderful Chem 3 organic professor, super caring and passionate about what she teaches not to mention humorous. I would take her again for any organic Chem class .
Very Canvas-based: responds quickly to messages on there, has all the resources on there (if not, message her and get access to it), all announcements on there. She looks at the clock, panics and skips to material she thinks is important so things can be out of order. She tells whats on the test and if time permits does a review before.
She grades tests quickly and you think her tests will be harder than it is. She tells you format and hints at general things that will be on the test. Her class is expensive and time-consuming class. Retake her notes since things aren't in order and do MasteringChem in a notebook because she can draw from that for tests. You will know your stuff.
She teaches mechanisms, Vahid does not, so it's less confusing but more memorizing. She teaches what you need to know & bases her tests on what she teaches, don't miss her powerpoints or masteringchem. She draws little concepts from there. Do all discussion packets, Mastering Chem, lab notebooks, worksheets, memorize pink sheets for best results.
Online summer class was a disaster, she seems like a good person but I have never been more unsure of my grade in my life, the tests were most of your grade and homework lasted for hours, very strenuous. Wouldn't have passed if it wasnt for chem 160. Had to constantly be correcting her, uses online database for everything, seemed unprepared.
She is all over the place. No clear direction where you are going. If you are not a strong chemistry student then do not take her. You have to study 24/7 and even then the exams are not clear. Good person, but the teaching was not there
I had to take Chemistry so I decided on taking her class. My class was a hybrid course so I went to class on Wed. for labs and the rest of the days were online. In my opinion, it was pretty hard to manage everything on my own but its kinda also my fault in taking an online chem class. She provides you with lecture slides and example problems!
Really nice professor, but this online class was hard. I understood the material, and studied my butt off for tests, and i barely got an A. I recommend taking Chem160 before you take her, I cannot imagine getting an A in this class had I not been exposed to chem already. The tests are difficult and worded weird. Responds fast, super nice.
She's a good person but is all over the place. Make sure you have a solid understanding of Chemistry in general or else you'll fail your quizzes and tests. I really don't like her online class because you had to use 3 websites for assignments, and some were confusing. Also a very expensive class so make sure you have money when you're taking her.
She is excellent. Online Chemistry and online lab was hard for all. She is is willing to help students and goes beyond! She extends dates if students are struggling. Show up to zoom meetings. Two online programs attached with course, programs were a mess for students and her but she helped us through! Just speak up and she will help with anything!
PART 1: The syllabus is very easy to understand. VERY ACCESSIBLE OUTSIDE THE CLASS. The class calendar is VERY, VERY USEFUL. She gives you the lists of chapters and lab that she expects you to read and finish so you can read and finish them in advance.
I loved Professor Santiago!!She is so on top of her game. She teaches the material clearly and answers questions in a way that makes sense for students learning!! Lots of homework but great practice for test. Very understanding about emailing late assignments. Weekly zooms. Always attentive and caring towards students! Absolutely loved her.10/10 !!
Professor Santiago is a really nice person. She gives plenty of homework and the labs are really helpful and correlate with lecture. Shes a fast grader. The written out portion of her tests isnt that bad but multiple choice is somewhat hard. I only got to see her once a week for lecture. She was really helpful when I went to her office hours.
Professor Santiago is approachable and so nice. She quickly responds. I do feel like, however, her replies to my concerns were not always clear. Do the assignments in a timely manner and watch her videos! Watch her instruction videos for top hat on Canvas. Go through Canvas, entirely, to set yourself up for success. This class is doable.
She may be an okay teacher in person, but shes incompetent when it comes to conducting classes online. No clear directions and doesnt record her classes.
Shes not the best but I had no choice but to take her since all the other professors are terrible. Professor Kaur is the best but sadly shes not teaching chemistry 10 at the moment. Professor Santiago seems like she dosent want to be bothered when you ask her for help. She also wants to take a look at your file upload work for almost all labs.
Professor Santiago was great. Chemistry is a hard subject but she makes it tolerable. Coming from someone who has taken Chemistry twice, you wont regret taking chemistry with Professor Santiago. Stay up to date on all your work!
She doesn't get back to you in a timely manner. Homework takes ages to complete and if you email her saying you need help she'll tell you to watch the video again. Doesn't take time to help you. There's more self teaching than her teaching you. Homework is spread across 3 different platforms.
Prof Santiago is hard to access outside class. I emailed her several different times asking for help on difficult topics and she would take a while to respond. Once she did respond, she would refer me to the videos or another student. I managed to receive an A but had a hard time because this class was mostly self-taught. Would not recommend!
Asynchronous online. Mandatory book purchase. Software used: Canvas, MasteringChemistry, TopHat for labs. Prof is very backhanded and is constantly annoyed by students asking her questions or emailing her about anything. No lectures. Too scared to ask about anything because we know she's going respond backhandedly and borderline disrespectfully.
Does not get back to you. You'll use mastering chemistry assignment due before learning the material not learned. Posts modules and expects you to go through and watch videos provided. She has given a quiz without even posting the module. I would not recommend.
if you are considering taking her online, please save yourself and don't. When it came to homework it wasn't difficult but the way she lays out her test is horrible, truly. She doesn't give enough time for tests. for example, I took her final spring exam and ran out of time to send my work as a document and she wouldn't accept it?? Please save $$$
Responded quick enough. Not enough time to do calculations and complete tests though. Tech heavy! Please be mindful that you will utilize your book, tophat, and canvas! Labs every Wednesday via zoom if you have questions. Do ALL your homework and study and you'll do fine. I missed some labs in the beg. and that's why I didn't have a higher grade.
I learned absolutely nothing from this class.
Copy and paste class. I gave a 4 for difficulty because I had to teach myself everything using You Tube. I give her 0 credit for "teaching". Style is not geared towards anyone who requires help, acts bothered. Assigns quizzes and homework due before learning material. Not enough time for tests. Announcements are condescending. -0 out of 10. Beware.
The quizzes and tests are too short for long calculations. So worried about students cheating that she lowers the times for students to take the quizzes and tests. It would be impossible for a honest student to finish on time with the short amount of time they are given to do so many calculations.
took this class with anatomy originally and was a bad decision, but when I did retake it I got a 88% not my first pick. doesnt give enough time on tests, lab on one platform due Thursdays hw on another due on Sundays did not match the rating. OH and she doesn't update your grade often. Unit exams are 30% of your grade, final is 15%
Do you like learning material by yourself? If so, this is the class for you! Not a clear grader & isn't accessible outside of class. Final was 130 questions with 120 minutes. Fears cheating so she never gives enough time on quizzes & tests. She won't tell you what you did wrong on tests or quizzes & doesn't allow for much slack or accommodation.
If you like YouTube University but want more anxiety, this class is for you. You'll have to teach yourself, she won't tell you why she's grading things the way she is, and she doesn't give enough time on tests. Your assignments are spread over three separate platforms, and her assignment instructions are harder to understand than the chemistry is.
I had to take a family member to the emergency room the night I planned to take a test and was not able to complete it. After explaining this to her she would not open the test for me again.
She is a tough grader. No feedbacks on exams at all. Replies back to emails quick. So much Homework
Consists of assignments through Canvas, MyLab, & Top Hat. So much homework for this class & taught through YouTube. Random quizzes every week. Instructions: unclear. Exams are timed (not enough time, you will panic & even run out of time). Asks to upload your work for the exams after exam 1. However I reccommed taking her online than in-person.
She is a good person and professor. For Ochem, she is a fair teacher and provides you with more than enough resources. You don't have to watch ALL or read ALL of the material but do attempt to learn as much as you can. She's there to help you but it's up to you if you want to put in the work and succeed.
I really don't understand the good ratings for this professor, this was hands down the worst and hardest class I have taken in the 2 years I've been attending solano. Not only is chemistry a hard subject to understand, her teachings make it even harder to understand. If you want a good grade in chem 010, then I would HIGHLY recommend to stay away,
To be blunt about Prof. Santiago, is to stay away and to take a different professor for this class. Hands down made chemistry way more difficult to learn then it already was, and also was rude at times. I had to miss one of the exams due to a family member being hospitalized, and when I told her the day of, zero response whatsoever.
She doesn't give feedback on assignments and doesn't explain why she grades the way she does. Also all the tests are timed and you will run out of time.
Asynchronous class with a lot of homework and tech tools like Canvas, MasteringChemistry, and Top Hat. Exams are very time-pressured. The professor can be abrupt, but Unstuck AI helped me prepare and manage the workload effectively.
I'd recommend to take this class with someone else. The material was fine but this professor was blunt, rude and unhelpful at times. If you have to, just take her online.
just don't.
Maria's class is very test-heavy, and the tests are tough. I studied constantly and never scored above 80%. No extra credit is offered. If you study hard and pay close attention in class, you can do well, but don't expect an easy A—it's hard to earn. Make sure you form a study group with the people at your table—it helps tremendously, STUDY.
Chem is not an easy subject and she's patient and being funny with it. This was a hybrid course and the biggest challenge are classmates not reading the online stuff ahead which forces professor to do lectures for lab time. I do like her teaching approach for this class. Ik she retiring next year but would be great if she can tidy up her Canvas tho
