Very good teacher. I have learned quite a bit. She always is open to ideas and opinions from every student.
it's an easy class if you do the work however there is a 12 page essay due at the end of the semester and studying is needed for her tests.
She is very helpful and dedicated. Definitely go to the class before a test, it will help.
Maria is a very thorough and easy-going professor. I like her class and find the information interesting. I recommend taking this class with her!

Maria is a great teacher and is always open for help. Class was not too hard needed to read the book which wasn't too hard and the class discussion were very intersting and fun.
Maria is truly a beautiful teacher. She always has a positive attitude, which I think rubs off on the class. She is extremely intelligent and makes it very clear what is expected in order to do well in the class. The 6-8 page paper sucks, but she gives you the whole semester to do it.
I didn't want to take this class at all!! Maria made this class fun and worth going to. The discussions were very fun and I'm happy I took this class!!! You learn a lot and the work is not that bad. No homework (other than readng) just a paper and tests.
Easy class, Maria's awesome. There is homework every week (reading) and an online reading quiz every other week. You have to make one "presentation" of one of the reading assignments (basically share 3 main pts with the class), a semester paper, and a few exams. I suggest taking her night class.
Great professor, very knowlegeable, fun, and warm-hearted. Take her class!
Great teacher and very nice. Read the books and you will be fine.
Awsome teacher, really down to earth, friendly, and helpful. Very interested in seeing students suceed.
This class can be a little difficult becuase she assings so much reading. The class is really fun though and if you can get through the reading then you will do fine.
This Lady is awesome. She is the most caring teacher there is. I did some of the readings but not most and I got a solid B. Highly Recommended teacher!
Probably the nicest, most caring, cool person i've ever met.
She's really nice, has an interesting life story too. It's nice to hear her point of view when she shares it. The class isn't hard but it can be pretty boring if you have annoying people in your class who like to share a lot! Can't blame Maria for that tho, she does her best. Overall, good teacher--take her!
She's very nice, very helpful, and just all around a great woman. I took this class with her spring 06 and loved it! It's kinda easy if you go to class and listen to her.. I rarely even did the readings, though they were interesting. Got an A, no problem.
Great teacher, maybe the best at ISU. Take her classes and you will learn and enjoy them. Lots of reading and work but she makes it interesting.
Good teacher. Lots of class participation. Lots of reading but its worth it. Goes over reading in class which helps to learn.
I learned a lot in this class. It makes you think - and you actually WANT to think in this class! (haha) She requires a few projects that will take some time and effort but overall it's a good class. The tests are kinda hard, but you'll stay up on your readings cuz she requires easy, short online quizzes each weekend. Keeps class activities varied.
Great teacher and very knowledgeable.
I never went to this class. She gives out attendance points, 25, randomely. I got 15 of them and still easily got an A. Just do the study guides and make sure you do well on the Family Research Project.
Great Teacher. Good to go to class because she tells you things you want to know for the test. DO THE REVIEW SHEETS, what is on there is on the test! Do good on the two writing assingments and the class is a breeze and really informative. Loved the class and what she taught us.
Great teacher and sort of cute.
Very knowledgeable and a fair grader.
She was a great teacher. She shares stories of her life and knows A LOT. She gives participation that is and fun. She makes class fun and is honestly a great lady. I would take this class with her. The only negative part is that there is a lot of reading to do. So keep up with the reading and you'll do fine!!!
maria is a GREAT teacher! her tests are STRAIGHT from the study guide, so if you do those, you should easily get an A! There's a LOT of reading, but if you just skim through it, understand the main concepts, and fill out the study guide you should be OK. She also drops a test score so that helps.
Maria is easy & very helpful. Likes class participation & uses the book a lot. Class has it's boring times, but mostly very interesting. Tests are pretty much the same as the study guide. EASY FINAL too!
She's kind of odd with her teaching skills. Definitely not a typical teacher, but that's not necessarily a good thing. Her tests are fair, but her class sometimes seems like a joke. The textbook is a collaboration of essays, which is very different.
Do not let any of the previous reviews of this professor influence your decision for taking or not taking a class with Maria. Yes, she is a very nice and knowledgable woman. However, the entire class is comprised of far too much reading. If you do not intend on reading a lot, DO NOT TAKE HER. If you dont read, you wont do well.
she was really boring and kind of talked in circles.
I think she is a good person but as a teacher she sucks!!!!! her tests are long and tidious. quizzes every week..do not take her
she is the most boring woman on earth. here voice will put you to sleep. Not very nice through e-mail and she really is not worth it. do not waste your time with her. She LOVES TO ASSIGN READINGS! SO BORING.
A good teacher and a great person! I also took her 262 class. Lots of reading but tests are fairly easy (in 112 at least). Very open to all beliefs and ideas. Class can be boring at times, but not hard. Easy to rack up participation and extra credit points if you just go to class. I recommend her.
Maria is a great person and wonderful teacher. She does a lot of work with Global Outreach programs for orphans and street children and allowed our class to get involved. The class is fairly easy but you have to come to class and study the study guide...well worth your time!
Amazing teacher and person...she really took the time to make sure we understood the material and engaged us in ISU's first ever long-distance service learning project to help orpans and street children around the world. There were weekly online quizzes for each chapter in the book & she provided study guides for the tests. Great class!
Really hard and boring. Extreme amount of reading, 2 papers, online quiz on readings every week, put 8 times more work in this class than my others and it was my lowest grade. She said the course material was changed for this semester, so that may be why my experience was not as easy as the raters before. You've been warned.
I really loved this class! I got a lot out of it. Maria is a great teacher. The class is very reading intensive, but as the semester goes on I feel like the tests get easier. Just keep up with the readings and do her study guides!
She gives you everything you need to succeed. This includes chapter study guides and test study guides. There is a lot of reading but it is interesting. It is very clear what is expected of you and if you follow her directions it is a really easy A and an interesting class. Go to class or you will probably fail though!
She is really nice and helpful. There is a lot of reading, but you have a week to get it done. TONS of out-of-class extra credit opportunities and quite a few in-class opportunies as well. She makes it a point to learn names--which is unlikely in lectures--and she does a lot of in class activities where she likes to hear student opinons an stories.
These ratings are clearly from her favorites. This class makes you read two novels at once, one is decent and the other is EXTREMELY hard. She will help if you go to her office hours but its hard to keep up with the reading!Tests are also difficult.Online quizzes and EC are your only hope. She LOVES a small group of students who love the material
Maria's amazing. Shes clearly super passionate about what she teaches and knows a lot about it. Not going to lie, I never bought the book. Its on course reserve so you can take the online quizzes 20 mins before class. All of her classes require to present information, take online quizzes and do some sort of project. None of its hard. Take her class
She is generally interested in the students in the class, and wants everyone to succeed. She gives everyone many opportunities to succeed. Know the material in the books, and go to class! Tests will be very difficult otherwise.
super nice & very helpful when you need help. cares A LOT about what she teaches & she teaches it well. Gives out participation points in class. Class is not mandatory but I would recommend going. She doesn't put notes online. She draws from the lectures & book for tests & there is one paper you have to do.
This class is pretty difficult but she is really helpful and offers a TON of extra credit opportunities. But you definitely need to read the novels to do well on the tests.. and they arent that easy to read!
Overall not too bad of a class. read 60-100 pgs a week. online quizzes & discussions everyweek. 3 tests, drops lowest. 1 paper u choose. she wants u 2 have a deeper meaning of everything so cant just read for general meaning. u have 2 get the deeper meaning of it. she is a nice lady, go 2 office hours 4 help & do extra credit! it helps 2 go 2 class
Maria was a great teacher! There was a lot of reading involved but its not awful. Her lectures made me actually think about interesting topics. I would recommend talking to her during office hours for extra credit. She isnt intimidating at all!
The class is really interesting. She gets your attention from day 1. You need to read what is assigned. If you read and do study guide, test is easy. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! Only 1 paper.
She is great. She loves her work and loves seeing her students grasp the class even more. Build a relationship with her through the extra credit assignments. She is great to talk to. Getting an A is reasonable if you do the readings. She also drops a test which is awesome.
Maria is a GREAT teacher. She loves her job and you can see it through her presentations. Each class is different and very interesting. Going to class isnt a drag because the topics are easy to relate to. Take advantage of the extra credit opportunities that she gives you; they can really help your grade. She lets you drop a test. Take her class!!!
Maria is great. She builds a personal relationship with you, and offers tons of extra credit. Class consists of 4 exams (one is dropped) and one paper. READ THE BOOKS! As long as you read and do the study guides you're fine. This is such a great class and Maria is AMAZING!
Maria totally changed my life. She really cares about what she teaches and means everything she says instead of teaching because she "has" to. She uses her personal experience and asks for yours to get to know you and she WILL remember your name, even out of 300 students. Love her.
Easy class but you HAVE to read. She assigns three novels which is kind of a lot but doable. Class can be boring sometimes but overall its not bad. She really cares about the subject matter and wants everyone to do well. Do all of the extra credit
Hard to pay attention to.
If you do not have a strong reading ability DONT TAKE THIS. You have to read three books and that it the bases for the tests. The study guide questions are very broad and it can be hard to tell what answer she is looking for. Class time is not used effectively. Take FCS 112 my friends say its really easy and counts for the same gen ed.
Maria, is terrible. Class time is not used effectively at all. All her tests are based on three novels, not textbooks. NOVELS! Her SG's are broad and help rarely. On one class test the average was 62, and the high was a 90. she didn't curve. Im thinking that means her test sucks. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Awesome teacher. She was very nice and cared about her students. Very passionate in helping and teaching the material. Have to read books. Have to write a paper. Notes are not online, so good to go to class. Questions on the exam come straight from the study guide. you do that you'll be fine
Maria is one of my favorite professors at ISU. She is a genuinely beautiful person and she cares so much about each individual. If you put in the time and go to her office hours, she is so willing to help. READ THE BOOKS that are assigned and take notes on the content and you should be fine. Maria is always open to discuss anything if you are lost.
shes an amazing person and very passionate. but if your looking for an easy gen ed id avoid. three novels that are kind of dry. STUDY for the tests, i failed the first one, but she drops one. class not mandatory but recommended
Reading the novels is necessary if you want to pass. Even though I read the books thoroughly, I still didn't do well on the tests. However, she offers tons of extra credit and there are online quizzes every week which help to even out grades. She does not curve, which sucks.
She's very nice and helpful. This is a great class. The books are easy to understand and very interesting too.
She is an awesome teacher. The class can get kind of boring sometimes since it's usually just reinforcement of the books you have to read but she keeps things interesting. Read the books for class! Attendance isn't mandatory because slides are posted online. She is so much fun and really cares about her students. I recommend taking her!
Maria is a great teacher. She does expect a lot out of us, which isn't bad, but it means a lot of work. Tests were hard but if you did the study guide, they were very similar. But, it's worth taking the class.
Great teacher, interesting topics are covered. Speaks kind of slow, but she's super nice and pretty understanding. She tries to keep things interesting during lecture. It's a lot of reading but not unbearable. I would recommend this class to anyone. It's a really interesting class.
This class is pretty easy. You have 11, 10point quizzes(online). and 3 exams (your lowest one dropped), and 1 paper. Quizzes are based off readings and she gives you a study guide for all tests. All test are multiple choice. Not hard to get an A.
Great class. Maria was fun, topics were interesting, book was fun to read. I went to almost all lectures, did all homework and am a straight A student. HOWEVER! Maria's grading on test/assignments is unbelievably difficult. This class ruined my GPA and I studied so much for it. DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS. Test Mean: 66%
Maria is really nice and truly cares about her students
DO NOT TAKE HER. I am a straight A student and I struggled very much in this class. She is extremely boring and does not use any class time wisely. While she does have good intentions and is very nice, her quizzes/tests are extremely hard and you will never know which answer she is looking for. I read all the readings and still struggled greatly.
This class was extremely hard. I was very interested in the subject but the tests were extremely hard. Do not take if you do not want to dedicate lots of time to reading. This class was the hardest class I've taken at ISU.
Maria was an amazing professor. So passionate about the topic. If you do the textbook readings and look at the slides she uses to reinforce them you will be fine!
This class is super easy! She gives weekly quizzes but I don't even read the material for it, I just look for the answers in the reading. She gives you 30 min to answer 5 questions. She gives you a study guide that tells you exactly what's on the tests and drops the lowest one. Go to class though, some of her questions are things she's said.
Very caring professor. But is terrible at explaining the class material. Takes way to long to answer questions. Weekly quizes. Exams are confusing.
Maria is very nice but never uses class time wisely. The weekly quizzes are hard and count for a large part of your grade. She does not go over the material very well and spends too much time sharing stories and asking people's opinions on the class material. The material itself is very interesting, she just does wastes class time.
Maria is a really nice lady but a bit of a loopy one. She didn't use class time very effectively and her TAs grade the major paper with an iron pen. She also has really specific test questions that don't always reflect the material she tells you to pay attention to. Overall, she was alright.
Like the previous posts I would have to certainly agree that Maria is nice, but not all there(in a bad way). It seems as though she wants to help, but she seems more so interested in herself throughout the process. We had to create study groups for the exams which were ridiculous! I've heard lots of negatives about this woman & they're true.
I liked Maria as a person, however I am not the biggest fan of her teaching style. She is very soft-spoken, and a lot of the time we watched movies. Power points don't always contain a lot of information. She does offer a lot of extra credit, and is very nice and understanding. Go to class, read the book, do the quizzes, and study for tests.
I enjoyed this class a lot. Maria seems very passionate about it. There is a ton of reading but the quizzes are online and are not very hard. There are 3 tests and a final, but one of the first 3 is dropped. The paper is very important, put some effort into it. Do the extra activity points, you can get 20 points of EC. It helps a lot!
Maria was my favorite professor this semester, but I'll admit she can be a little out there sometimes. Because I didn't have to stress about getting an A, I enjoyed the class. To-do-list for a solid A: Show up, pay attention, do activity points, skim the readings, and take an A on the paper.
I was interested in sociology before this class and now I am changing my major. She is different and asks for office meetings. She is nice but I would not go to talk to her.
I'm sure she knows what she is talking about, but she doesn't now how to teach it. We spend the whole class time speaking and hearing people's opinions instead of learning the material that we are going to be tested on. You have to read in order to pass and basically teach yourself everything. Not even the review sessions are helpful.
This class is not an easy A. Maria is a very sweet person, but when I went to ask her for help she just told me how to meditate instead of do well on her tests. Her tests are very specific to the readings you have to read and there are several readings per test. If you don't understand material that you read on your own, you'll struggle.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. basically the whole test is a bunch of reading from the book. the reading are long and are redundant and can be summarized in one simple paragraph. i found it very hard to stay awake in her class. the test are not on the material that she teaches in class and she doesnt really teach anything.
I do not recommend this professor. she does not cover everything in class that will be on the exams and spends too much time wanting to hear other peoples opinions. ALOT of reading, a ridiculous amount actually. do NOT take Maria!!
All tests are based on the readings and opinions of other people/ "experts". Extremely difficult. In class lectures are irrelevant and all she does is play movies and ask for others' opinions. The powerpoints are completely useless and have no valuable information on them. She's a nice lady, the class is just awful. Also heavy heavy reading.
If you don't read you wont do good on the quizzes or exams.
Loved having Maria for SOC112. It was stressed from the first day how important the reading is, so do it! Her syllabus is very thorough so use it as a guide. Don't procrastinate on your paper. Do all the activity points, you have the option to get extra credit points. The semester was hard at first, but I ended up with an A, put in the work.
This class requires lots of reading! The readings are very informative. The tests are based of the readings for that unit. In lecture, she reviews the readings, watches films, and has supplemental material. Make sure that you pick a paper topic that is interesting to you, because it is a large chunk of your grade. Very nice teacher!
Maria is wonderful! She is a very kind lady who takes student feedback seriously. Make sure you do the readings and come to class (she reviews the readings and shows interesting documentaries that you'll be tested on.) Take your paper seriously and stay on top of it and you're set. It's a really great and interesting class!
She makes you read A LOT, and you have a quiz on readings every week, and she takes 10 years to put things in the grade book, even though she has five TAs.
just took in Fall '17 - - - YOU HAVE TO READ... quizzes are hard if you don't read, she doesn't cover everything in lecture about assigned readings. tests are easy if you do the blue print. she has 4 TAs but is very slow about grading and replying. up to 20 points extra credit & take american family project serious!! very hard on grading it.
Maria is such a lovely professor. I wish I found the StudyBlue for her quizes before the last quiz; there's lots of reading and going to class is the best way to get a good grade but she's understandable, offers extra credit, and lets you take control of your own grade. She's a bit quiet and monotone but I've never had a teacher care so much.
Interesting (liberal) material A LOT of reading, super monotone and boring lectures but class is pretty much useless I stopped going to class halfway through the semester. Was about to end the class with an A but whoever graded the 100 point paper was pretty tough so it brought me down to a B and I would have gotten straight As but this ruined that
I literally could have no showed to every class and still would have received a B.
One of the most invested professors I've ever had. The way she broke down the main synthesis project of the semester in to sections has helped me a tremendous amount with my writing and reading comprehension skills. If you do the work you will gain a lot.
Professor is very boring. Need to read to do good on quizzes. Had perfect attendance and the class is still pointless. If you are good at teaching yourself then take this course otherwise don't waste your time.
This woman is hands down the most boring/monotone professor I have ever experiences at ISU. She's a nice woman don't get me wrong, but her teaching and grading style is just complete nonsense. The way she has the class work structured with the activity points is extremely annoying and time consuming. Assignments and exams are all difficult
This class is reading heavy; however, the readings are not difficult. She assigns 3 chapters per week with a quiz. There will be 10 reading quizzes, 10 pop quizzes, a diversity application and 30 mandatory activity points. Her tests are slightly tricky and are mostly on the readings. Read thoroughly, take detailed notes and you'll be fine.
So Maria is a very nice person and this class is over-all very interesting and I probably would take it again. However, the way in which she teaches the class is not super effective and she definitely panders down to her students. Criteria for grading is not very clear because she "doesn't believe in grades". Participation is a must.
Insanely boring class. Lectures are useless. She'll assign 40 pages of nonsensical reading and instead of cover it in class we'll talk about people's life experiences and off topic things. If you don't have to take this class for your major, absolutely do not take it. Biggest waste of your time, online quizzes are impossible unless you read also.
Not hard at all but all quizzes are based off of the readings which are lengthy, but interesting. She's super chill and nice. Quizzes every week, one "paper", and in class activity points. An interesting class that deals a lot with race, gender, sexuality, etc. She also shows amazing documentaries and fims that are soooo good.
Maria is so nice, interesting, and worth taking. She has 10 class activities that do require you to be in class in order to get the participation points, but the syllabus tells you when they are. She posts all of the slides online, there's one easy online quiz a week about the readings, study for the tests (drops the lowest of four), but not hard.
God, she is so creepy. She asks the class inappropriate questions and tries to single out students if they are illegal immigrants in front of the whole class. No one can stand her. She even asked about students' orgasm experiences. She is literally so boring and makes everyone very uncomfortable. Her lectures are disorganized. DONT' take this class
By far the best class and professor i have taken. She really cares about her students and wants to get to know her students. The class was so interesting and easy to understand. Definitely go to lecture and read all the chapters. I would take this class every year if i could.
I personally had the best experience with Maria!! I slacked off at first and she helped me get right on track she was very caring about my life and my well being she even had us meditate a few times in class. Thanks Maria!!
Class is a joke, teacher has no idea whats going on as well and just assigns readings to you with little to no guidance prior to tests
Lots of reading and group projects
This class just wasnt good. She assigns a lot to read in such a short period of time and quizzes are every week. The exams are ridiculous. Im sure she was a great professor prior to online learning but now, it seems like her students just walk all over her and theres zero structure in her Zooms. I just stopped showing up to them altogether.
To be entirely honest, this class and prof is a joke. Maria has no idea what shes teaching or talking about and has the TAs do all the work. The tests are EXTREMELY hard. Wouldnt recommend.
I hated this class and hated her as a professor even more. She is very liberal minded, she talks about absurd topics such as orgasms. She makes you meditate. The tests are hard. Her TA's grade everything and their grading style is different. She tries to get people to talk about their personal life such as immigration, gender, race, sexuality, etc.
