She was very intimidating at first but lightened up after the first week. She had interesting lectures most of the time and made the material easy to understand. If you fill out your entire lecture packets for practice, you'll definitely pass the course.
She is the best chemistry professor I have had so far. There is a lot of material that is covered since this is a 5 credit course. You have to read the book, attend lecture, and do practice problems to grasp this material. Dr. Shteynbuk did an amazing job breaking it all down so that you can understand it, but you still need to put work in.
This was a tough class and there was a lot of material covered. In order to pass you need to go to class and discussion. She used tophat for attendance. We had 4 exams and then a final exam. she does have a bit of an accent but shes nice about repeating something. she is very nice. does not do makeup exams quizzes or test but drops lowest grades.
Great teacher, but hard material for incoming freshmen. You have to work a bit in class, but she's very helpful outside of class. She can get excited and talk too fast or teach too fast in lecture but if you ask questions, she will slow down and explain more.
She's a good teacher, but the course is heavy material, so you have to work hard for it and study a lot. Also, she does go fast but she wants students to ask her questions. At first, she seems intimidating, but if you go to her office hours and ask her questions during lectures and after class, she's really nice.
One of the worst teachers i ever had , her explanation during lectures isnt that good , studying from the textbook was a lot better than her explaination.
She is a good teacher who is willing to take time for you so you can do well in the class. Lectures are helpful, but she drops a lot (attendance, quizzes, exams, etc) so your end grade turns out well. I'd take her as a teacher again. Hard class, but she teaches well.
The class is difficult as it is chemistry but, if you put in a little time and study for the exams and quizzes it isn't too bad. She makes topics easy to understand and her tests aren't extremely hard. There are weekly quizzes (3 lowest dropped) and four exams(lowest dropped). Since her tests were easier, the department written final was difficult
I absolutely loved her, she's a hoot. Chemistry is hard in general but compared to other teachers she's fantastic. Yes attendance is mandatory, and yes there is a lot of homework but I was more prepared for my next chem class due to that. The more work you put in, the more you will get out.
She is absolutely amazing. I went into organic chemistry thinking I was going to fail. She is easy going, funny, and enjoys teaching the class!
Shes a great person but her lectures are hard to follow. the homework is overwhelming. would be better for someone who is naturally good at chemistry and can learn on their own. topics are too broad and hard to follow. did not pass even though i got 100% on the homework and 70s on the tests.
There are so many things required for this class! you are graded on attendance, quizzes every week, multiple tests, and two other homework systems that are also required. I was overwhelmed with the amount of work that was given. Also, lecture moved fast, so if you didn't understand, good luck! Almost had to teach yourself.
Maria is hilarious and willing to stop an entire lecture if you have a question or if she senses that no one understands what she's doing. If you have the online homework and you are struggling GET CHEGG. It will help you understand what you are doing. There is a massive curve at the end, so if you are high 70-low 80 you should see a B+ to A grade.
Dr. Shteynbuk can be intimidating at first but she is an amazing professor. She goes through lecture making sure that everyone is understanding and is well aware of her flaws and tries her very best to be the perfect professor. The class isnt difficult itself, you just have to keep up with the homework and studying.
Basic intro class filled with meaningless work. Insane amount of homework-type grades even for a 4 credit class. Half the time you're just turning in half-arsed work because you have other courses to attend to. Expect lots of random stuff to keep on top of. Biggest gripe? Rushing through material on a daily. Why even teach at this point. Youtube it
I attended my lectures and did all the work I could understand to even do. She goes through lectures very very fast and assumes you know all of it. Cant be shy or you're never going to understand. Also even when you ask questions she makes you feel dumb or sends you to someone else.
Avoid taking her class at all costs! She is a horrible professor that rushes through lectures, hardly goes over practice problems, and acts like we should have her level of understanding. How to succeed: READ the textbook, it teaches you more than she does. Watch lots of YouTube videos on the concepts and do LOTS of practice problems! Good luck!!!
People rate her badly because they aren't willing to put the work in. She is a tough personality, but very funny & nice if she sees participation. She can be terse in her emails, but I think it's a language thing. Dumbest part of the class was paying $15 for the attendance app, but there is so much grading criteria so do the work & you will pass
Im usually an A student but the end of this semester is HARD. Discussions help a ton because she does go over the material pretty fast and doesnt work though many problems at all.
A lot of people complain but if you put the effort in, you can get a good grade. She posts 2-3 lectures every week which go pretty fast, but the lecture exercise book (which has a key) will help you learn the material better. Discussion is also helpful when you have questions. If youre willing to put in a little extra work, youll do fine.
You have a quiz every other friday. She didnt really explain the material. she read most of the slides too fast. says she posts them so dont take notes in class. This class is easy if you do the material and keep up. Seems like she doesnt really care about the students sometimes.
Was very disappointed by this professor. We are in a pandemic and she refused to wear her mask on her nose and even came to class one day with no mask to where a student had to contact the director. She got upset when we did both good and bad on tests so shes very confusing. Overall, would NEVER take this course again with her.
If you can get another professor for this class, I would highly recommend it. Maria does not care about her students at all. I couldn't make up a quiz that I was 15 minutes late for because of a medical reason. I explained that to her and she did not care. I took AP Chem in high school and it was way easier than this class. Worst professor here.
Attendance is mandatory and monitored, and anyway, is needed: lessons are going very very fast, but she overall explains things well, gives quite a lot of examples. Lectures are dynamic, she encourages participation. You overall must do a lot of homework (some are graded weekly), need to read the textbook.
This class made me debate a major change
Try your hardest to not get Dr. Shteynbuk. You will get a good grade if you work for it, but compared to other Chem teachers at UWM you would be better off getting another professor.
Trust me on this one.
She does not care about her students. She does not use canvas much, so if you want to know your grade you have to use the syllabus and do it yourself. She is not very nice over email or in person when talking with her one on one.
Hard to understand, heavy accent. Wears a mask over her face but not her nose. The mask makes her even more difficult to understand. Rushes over her words. Wants students to write out terms in class but doesn't put the definitions on powerpoint, says the definition out loud, once. Loud, but doesn't really seem to be saying much that's valuable.
She speaks very quietly and never repeats herself. Her power points and lessons are not helpful at all. I learned all the content on my own during discussion, Khan Academy, and on other online videos I found. I feel like all of the content was rushed over and not explained well at all, which makes no sense for a CHEM 100 class.
I learned more during discussion than in her lecture. I would recommend going to SI if you end up with her as a professor. Her slides are bad, she goes too fast, and does not teach well.
This class is extremely difficult. There are no homework or practice problems that are as difficult as the ones on the tests, so it is very difficult to fully prepare for the exams. The exam averages are always very low. If there is any other professor teaching this course, choose the other professor.
She knows what she is doing, but she rushes through the content. Also, she gets annoyed when we do not ask questions, but then gets annoyed when we do.
She is really hard to reach outside the class through email. You miss any lecture, quiz, or test and you won't be able to make it up. She talks and teaches with an attitude.
Worst Professor I have ever had. She does not teach nor does she care about her students and if they pass the class or understand the material. Even if you do the stuff she says that will help you pass the class people still end up doing bad. Her tests don't have anything she "teaches" on them. She is rude and treats people like they are stupid.
I learned more from my TA who I have once a week than I do in her hour long 3 times a week class. Arguably the worst teacher I have ever had. If you're in here saying "you dont want to put the work in", It's a 100 level class, whats being demanded is too high. If you see her on your schedule ask for a new professor.
Just don't. I promise. Save yourself the nights of crying. I had to take her class because it was the only section that fit into my schedule. I should have catered my entire schedule around not taking her class. An absolute nightmare. You have been warned, good luck :(
She does practice problems in class but doesn't explain her work. So many answers on the key are wrong. Exam questions are nothing like practice problems - it seems like they are made intentionally difficult with little preparation. She overcomplicates things. TAs are on a completely different page which is weird. You've gotta teach yourself.
Lots of assignments. My biggest issue is that you learn material in discussions AFTER you're already been tested on it on the exams. She doesn't give enough time for exams. On the plus side she drops a lot of assignments at the end of the semester.
DO NOT TAKE THIS WOMAN'S CLASS!!!! I pray for those of you that will have to take her course. She does not think students have lives and other courses outside of her own. Worst teacher I have ever had.
Doesn't stop lecture to explain what she is doing to the class, but expects us to fully understand a new subject. Often would get frustrated at students for not understanding the new material. Did not have gradebook set up in the Canvas, so we would have to calculate it ourselves every time (made it inconvenient for us).
DO NOT TAKE CHEM 100 with her. She expects you to know everything chemistry & doesn't understand that this is a level 100 course. She gets mad when you don't ask questions but is very rude when you do ask questions. She does not explain her work at all & doesn't understand why the class is confused. You basically have to teach yourself the class.
If its possible to take another professor instead of Dr. Shteynbuk, DO IT. You will SAVE YOURSELF, it sounds dramatic but being a student that unfortunately had to take her class twice. It doesn't get any better with her. She will speed through all her lectures, leave you confused and ask questions TO YOUR questions.
She expects us to know the material before going into the lecture. She got annoyed when we didn't ask her questions during lectures and if we asked her a question she would ask back the question to you. She didn't explain the material or equation on the board that she go thru. You have to learn everything by yourself.
Dr.Shteynbuk was excellent at giving us study material to practice and master the material. Dr.Shteynbuk was excellent at preparing us during lecture and her TA Allison was outstanding at preparing us in discussion. The class prepared us extremely well for the next levels of Chem. I hope those who are taking more chem have a professor like her.
Dr. Shteynbuk was an amazing 343 teacher. Her lectures were very clear and the content on the exams and quizzes were fair. She was also great at answering questions via email. She really likes active participation and will get upset if no one is responding to her prompts. I wish I could have her for 345 as well.
She is extremely rude. Makes you feel like an idiot. She is insensitive. This class has way too much information for one semester and that may be her fault but her excuse all the time is she has too many students.
DO NOT TAKE CHEM 100 WITH HER!! I am a second year student and I have NEVER had such a horrible professor. She encourages asking questions, but when you do, she is rude and makes you feel bad for even asking. She expects you to know everything prior to coming into class. The only reason I knew what was going on in class was because of my TA.
Very unethical in her teaching. Questionable character
I'm a big believer that science classes require a good instructor, and Shteynbuk is not one of them. There is a lot of material covered in this course that she doesn't explain in a way that everyone can understand and has really high expectations for students. After taking chem 101 with a good professor I realized how hard Shteynbuk made learning.
worst ever. i have little background in chemistry and her teaching did not help me understand topics in the slightest. she expects you to come to class already knowing each topic and goes through 2 lessons in one 75 minute lecture, too much information for one class. she has no retake policy so if you miss a test or quiz, there are NO exceptions.
SHE IS HORRIBLE!
Her lectures make no sense. The mechanisms were pics copied and pasted from the book, and she never went over anything. Her grading scale is unrealistic for organic chemistry, as you need a 93% for an A, 87% for a B, and so on. Everyone from this class who I've spoken to did equally as poorly despite receiving above the class average on every exam
Worst professor ever. Do not take her class if your life depends on it. She is awful at lecturing and the way she teaches is hard to understand. The only thing saving me was the keys that she posted for each lesson's assignments, however, she decided to stop posting them. Does not care about her students or their success.
Dr. Maria is a nice person- I like her as an individual however, I wish that her teaching capabilities were greatly improved! Do every EXTRA CREDIT opportunity given! (it's what saved me in the end to get a B average). She likes active participation and it helps her to remember extra credit in the end. Khan academy helps with understanding lecture!
Took her this last fall as a freshman and while she wasn't my favorite professor she was not my least either. To be honest the people complaining and giving her 1's were probably the ones who didn't bother to show up to class except for quiz day. Go to lecture and do your homework and you'll be fine. Never missed a lecture and I aced most tests.
If you're not engaged and do the work, you will pass.
She was rude and her only excuse is that her class was too big. Very unprofessional, especially considering the fact that she did not thoroughly explain her thinking. On the flip side she does give out many extra credit opportunities which you should definitely use.
Do. Not. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I just started college. Im 2 weeks into school. I have an exam in her class in a few days??? She talks too fast, rude, unprofessional. Offensive responses. Yells at you when you dont ask a question loud enough. Keep in mind ive only seen her 4 times. Shes horrible. Her TA is a better teacher. Theres so much more.
Dr. Shteynbuk is very hard on her teachings. There are quizzes every week along with ALEKS homework, reading assignments and other canvas homework every week. You basically have to take notes on your own bc her lectures just consist of her talking and looking at diagrams. Attend the discussions as well although they are very boing. Don't recommend.
I'm not great at chemistry and learning from her was so hard. Her TA was so much better. I'd rather take the L and redo this class again with a NEW professor.
If this is your first chem class ever avoid at all costs, she yells at you the whole class. one quiz every week(15 min) , one readin assign. ( 45 min), aleks(3-8 hours) every week, I have a major problem with if you miss a test for whatever reason, mine was a funeral, you are not allowed to make up the test period so rude for a 100 teach
The TA's don't know what is going on just as much as the students. I meet with the TA every Tuesday, and we go over everything on the slides, however when you take the exam she will give you questions that have little to no correlation to them. The only positive part of this class is that the exams don't have a huge impact on your overall grade.
I loved this professor
Her lectures are fast, I would record them and play them again and still could barely keep up. She isn't good at answering questions and will make you feel dumb for asking. The problems she goes over in class are nothing compared to the exams. But she offers lots of extra credit, and test grades really don't affect your overall grade much.
Shes not nice
Lectures were fast to keep up with but the homework helped memorize and not have to study as much
Best science teacher ever! Class wasn't very difficult. If you did well in highschool chemistry I wouldn't worry about taking CHEM 100, even if it was a while ago.
Clear teaching, well thought out lectures. Sometimes moves too quickly with the material but posts all slideshows on canvas for if you need to go back or have it up in class. She is stern but reasonable. This class will be difficult if you do not attend lecture regularly but if you do and study on your own time you will be okay!!
Don't believe everything you read! This instructor has been unjustly rated. Dr. Shteynbuk is an amazing lecturer, she's great at explaining and knows what she is talking about. Her teaching style is welcoming towards newcomers, and she takes time (in Lecture and during office hours) to make sure everyone understands the concepts at hand.
Just gotta say I definitely agree with the Chem 100 Dec 23rd 2023 review. All those previous bad "reviews" had me worried but I'm so glad I ignored them and took her class. She's literally just 'Au' (gold, haha) at explaining chem content and although she may be a bit stern, that's no reason to put her down like I've seen some other "reviews" do.
Lectures are somewhat fast-paced but she takes time to answer all questions and makes sure everyone is understanding. One of the best professor's I've had! Definitely recommend!
I never took chemistry in high school, so this was my first introduction to the subject. Professor Shteynbuk is stern but a great professor. She expects her students to participate in class and this kept me engaged during lecture. If you are truly interested in learning chemistry and plan on attending class, take this course.
Honestly reading all these other reviews coming into the semester I was very scared. But, if you really apply yourself, study, and pay attention in lecture you will do perfectly fine. And she isn't as mean as everyone is making her out to be! You have to be very determined to do well tho and I think that's where everyone was lacking.
Chem 105 is a difficult course, but it is manageable. However, Dr. Shteynbuk makes the class harder. Attending lecture, discussions, and labs is a must to keep a decent grade, for the exams are always way much harder than expected.
Chem 100 is supposed to be an easy, intro to chem course. she found ways to make most everything more difficult and complicated than it had to be. You can definitely find better explanations on YouTube. She is rude and doesn't answer student's questions, instead just says things like "because that's how it's done" and not really helping anyone.
When I first signed up for this class and saw the reviews I was worried, but Dr. Shteynbuk is a great professor. The material really isn't very difficult and if you attend class, participate, and do all the homework you'll do just fine. She's great at explaining chem content and is more than willing to help if you reach out.
She talks really fast and goes ahead without explaining things well.
Talks very fast, moves on before people understand what they are doing. Office hours are hard to attend and short. Bad at explaining things, she has a very long-winded way of explaining, with comparisons that are often bad or inaccurate. Useless review material for the exams. Only plus is that she drops your lowest scores on an exam and a few labs.
My observations of her class: I felt the way she taught material was well-understandable (but, I had taken chem in HS, so some stuff was familiar). Drops some lowest grades. Group quizzes. Good homework. However: can be dismissive towards questions. Some long-winded, incomprehensible metaphors. For what I need, she's a good prof. But not everybody.
Don't take this class. Your advisor does not know what they are talking about.
She is very clear from the beginning that if you miss a quiz/test/assignment it is a zero, but she drops a significant amount of grades at the end of the semester. it is built so that you can miss 3 weeks of class without it affecting your grade. If you do everything on time and use her study guides I don't see how you could do poorly in her class.
Dr. Shteynbuk is very knowledgable in her field, however, when it comes to teaching, she is not the greatest. She tends to overcomplicate basic topics. Going to lectures WILL help you!!! She sometimes comes off condescending when asking questions. I am a horrible exam taker but I got a good/decent grade on everything else which helped me pass!
In chem 100 for every exam the avg score was failing, with the highest being a D+. Exams are worth like 55% of your overall grade. If you aren't a good test taker you're not going to do well. Honestly the worst part is she is just mean. I'm chem major who grasps these concepts well and the one time I went to office hours I left crying.
To all my Engineering majors good luck in this class. The lab TAs have no idea what they are doing.
Maria knows a lot of things but she talks way to fast and is not the best at teaching. You send her an email asking for help and she takes a whole day to respond with a single string of text just telling you to come to her office hours. My lab TA had no idea what he was doing half of the time and gave us wrong number during one lab.
The syllabus clearly outlines the assignments as well as which/how many are dropped. I think it balances out well as you have many dropped assignments that give room for flexibility. She talks quickly during lectures but in a way that makes it easy to pay attention and not daydream. I would say it is easy to pass as long as you do most of the work.
most miserable, difficult, and time intensive class ive ever taken. homework takes hours and the app we have to for it is terrible, she's condescending and unhelpful, even in her office hours, the tests are difficult, and the study guides are AWFUL. take the class online or with any other teacher.
She does not make study guides, so you have to freestyle the exam not knowing what to expect. Her slideshows are bad, just a bunch of graphs and tables followed by a meaningless explanation from her. Very rude, unfriendly, and unprofessional. The nice thing is a decent number of assignments are dropped. Definitely find a different professor though.
This professor is the definition of a heartless soul. She expects you to have a very great general knowledge before even taking chemistry 100 although some of us took a very easy chem in HS or didn't take it at all. Everything you do for hw is aleks and if you get stuck TA's will not help because “they aren't allowed”.
Where do I even start with this woman. The WORST teacher I've ever had. Incredibly rude & condescending mostly when you try & ask questions. She knows what she's doing when it comes to Chem but has NO idea how to teach it. Too fast in lecture & puts problems on the board & solves them without explaining them. Exams are so hard and no review guide.
I think shes a good professor I think a lot of people's ratings are dramatic the AP classes I took in high school were like this. It is chemistry which is a very hard subject She does go through things fast. Which is why I like discussion because the TA explains things well. Make sure you do the aleks and the practice problems to prepare for exams
Her lectures are not really useful in my opinion. She just goes over the problems without explaining how to do it. You have to study by yourself in this class because just going to lectures will make you lost. The class is structured well and you can pass this class easily by studying on your own
Dr. Shteynbuk is a great teacher if you have some background in chemistry. She moves quickly through lectures, but if you do the reading prior to class and fill out the booklet as she goes, you'll literally be fine. She gets bad ratings because most people don't read prior to class, making it seem difficult. Do the work required and you'll do well.
She is a horrible professor who seems to hate teaching. She gets very mad very easily and if she can't hear the students answering her questions she will yell at everyone for not participating. She doesn't care about her students enough to make sure they understand and will speed up the pace of the lecture when she thinks they don't care about it.
I don't go to lectures because I genuinely cannot stand her so I'm not expecting the best grade, but if you go to lecture you should probably be fine. She's actually the rudest professor I've ever had and I can't WAITTTT until I don't have to see her ever again. Best of luck
my experience was pretty average. she isnt the sweetest person but shes a teacher who would show up to teach and thats it. she encouraged questions but always had a tone but did her best to make sure everyone understood. people with no chem knowledge may struggle bc she isnt the most approachable person to ask questions.
Genuinely an evil woman. If you're not religious you'd better pick one and start praying. She's so condescending and rude and gets mad when people ask questions like that isn't her job. This woman is not built for teaching, she's so fast paced and yells at the entire class when people answer her questions too quietly. Find literally anyone else.
Might be the worst professor I have had in my college career so far. Not only is she somewhat hard to understand because of her accent, she is extremely rude horrible and answering questions that are asked during lecture. I had to go to the department chair to file a complaint about her. She barely does any actual teaching, just expects you to know
If there is another class option, pick it! Not worth spending your semester with her. She barely teaches, expects you to know everything beforehand, is extremely condescending, and acts like she is just here for the paycheck. I truly believe that if it were up to her, she would fail everyone just for fun. I can't stress enough, PICK A DIFF CLASS!!
She IS the absolute worst professor at UWM. She expects you to know everything before lecture. She is so rude and condescending. If you can pick a different professor please do.
She's really not that bad, a lot of these reviews saying shes evil are exaggerated, she is definitely stern but a lot of people need a stern professor. As for the coursework itself, I wouldn't recommend this class unless you want a career involved with chemistry, it was a heavy course load with the labs and homework, and I'm pretty burnt out now.
This was easily the most frustrating class I've taken at UWM. Lectures were unhelpful and moved far too fast, with the expectation that students already knew the material before coming to class. Asking questions often felt discouraged, and the overall tone was condescending rather than supportive. Shes the only one that teaches 105 so GOOD LUCK!
This was the WORST chemistry professor I have ever had. I showed up to her lecture just for her to not teach and claim that "your active participation is mandatory at all time." She is so rude and condescending when you try to meet with her after class. I walked to the class and exams without looking both ways so I didn't have to go. She is evilll.
I had to pay $200 to take this course. The homework system ALEKS, while a somewhat effective system for learning, costs $150 and is mandatory. Plus I spent $50 printing the practice problems booklet. I think asking college students to spend this much up front on a course is mildly disrespectful. Additionally, she lectures at a very fast pace.
