confused, unclear, subjective, demanding yet let unmentioned
Speaks down to students, scattered.
provides clear guideline of what she expects. sometimes rather subjective...
Didn't even need to go to class!
Very straight forward. Tries to make class practical and relevant. She's a hottie too.
She was excellent. Very Clear on what we needed to know for exams. Interesting material too!
Ironically the least experienced instructor I had was one of the ones who provided the most useful information. She was great! Concerned, considerate, helpful...Definitely better than most of the 'experienced' prof's we had...how sad is that?!?
She's an excellent instructor. Provides great useful notes and student conferences spark great interest among students and motivate discussions. And she's sweet! Look forward to her class every week.
Really cares for her students. Even emailed me to ask if I was feeling better when I was sick! Never talks down to us and everything is very straightforward. Awesome prof!!! Highly recommend
It is refreshing to have an instructor who is actually interested in TEACHING! Maria was very helpful, very clear, and she expressed a vast resevoir of knowledge on the topics she covered. The exams were easy enough so long as you came to class and did the readings. Highly recommended
I agree she's an excellent teacher and such a sweet person too! Classes were really interesting and I looked forward to them each week. I actually thought the exams wern't that easy and resembled a psych exam more than a family studies exam with lots of theories and memorization.
Maria was a wonderful prof! She was very kind to her students and I think is young enough to realize how much stress the average student is under. Her handouts saved me hours of note-taking, both in class and at home, and I looked forward to her class every week :)
Maria's nice and seems fun, but as a prof she drove me crazy. This was a senior-level class, but it felt like first year. She spent hours on material she could have gone over briefly and repeated ideas that didn't need reiteration. I liked her a lot as a person but the class was not what I'd hoped. Just my opinion!
I agree. definitely a very sweet and nice person..but i felt like i didn't really learn very much and i could've done just as well without going to the lectures.
she could not be more helpful even if she tried..she is hella helpful O.o reminds me of teachers i had back in middle school, but even more helpful..it's nice to be babied once in a while :P but her notes are a bit unclear sometimes
She understands what going through as students so she provides handouts (for 312) and overhead notes (for 210). She's so helpful and so nice! Highly recommended! But I do agree the class was structured more like a high school classroom, but hey, I'm not complaining. I actually learned a lot in this class relative to others. She has booty!
Amazing prof! Great class structure, and actually worth it to go to class. I actually learned stuff in this class!
Maria is a very sweet person but her teaching isn't that great. She simply takes notes striaght out from the textbook and if you raise a question, she will just refer to the textbook. you don't need to go to class.. it can get pretty boring !
210 was easy but she didn't do much to help that. Her tests are multiple choice and out of the text. Class time is a waste. Unfortunately you have to go because of poster board presentations. 312 was not as straight forward. She was a very nice person though - you wanted to like her teaching style ...
she is excellent, you couldn't ask for a much better prof; it's NOT an easy A, but she's fair and makes it fun and interesting.
She is amazing. I am taking 210 with her too, the two classes mesh together very well. She is so clear and easy to listen to. I am never bored in her classes. Best prof I have had at UBC. Take her for any classes you can. I just wish she taught more than just 210 and 312. Her tests are very fair, just know your stuff and you will be fine.
she's very nice. if you pay attention and take notes during lecture, and read the text well, the exams will not be hard.
one of the best prof, CLEAR lecture, i didn't want to skip her lecture, i loved it. want to take another class with her. she's helpful, generous, kind, all good. lil sense of humor makes it pleasant class. exams are mostly m/c with 3-4 long answer questions. don't miss class cuz she gives hinthint for exams. 3midterms no final not cumulative.
wow...before the class began, i was really excited about this course. I mean, family study i thought should be interesting. But man, her class is really boring! Her notes are like summary of every chapter. 1 chapter/ 2 days. test are irrelevant to her notes. Her class is pretty much not helpful at all. Have to take notes & do reading by urself
I actually took FMST 210 and 312 with here. It's easy class, just read the text book. For 210, she literally takes her notes outta the text, so read it and you'll be fine. She always stresses certain topics in class, and they will for sure be in the exam. FMST 312, 1 assigment to do, which was worth 40%, and you and can do it in point form, no intr
One of the best profs I've had so far! Her notes are actually very useful and very clear! And she gives you enough time to copy them down. She is very nice, friendly, and humourous. I definitely recommend her! Exams are MC and 3 or 4 short answers which are pretty easy..not hard to get a good grade in this class.
I studied for two weeks before the midterm even though I didn't attend her classes...but I fail (meaning below 50). Her notes are...nothing to say. She gave tips for the midterm, but those questions didn't appear in the midterm at all.
I've never studied like this. It's hell. She teaches at least 2 chapters a week (1 lecture for 1 chapter) but the lecture does not helpful at all. I found that the class is too fast and too stressful. Studying more than 3 weeks straight before midterm but I failed. It's definitely nonsense(FMST 210)
Her tests are very hard, this is not a good GPA booster. I had interest in FMST, but after taking this course I'm not interested anymore. Her m/c isn't too bad, but the written will ruin your mark. The questions are so complex, only someone with actual experience can answer those questions. She had to remark the 1st midterm since marks were so low
Yeah, she's hot, but so what! I want a prof that can teach. It turns out, she must have read the ratings here, and upon finding out that she was an easy A decided to strike back. This class is now much too hard and demanding to be a 200-level course, so be warned!
Maria is definately the most USELESS teacher I have EVER had, and I have spent over 15 years in school. She seems to have little interest in what she is teaching and the workload for her fmst210 course is more than all my other courses combined. She seems to spend more time deciding what to wear than actually producing comprehensible lecture notes.
i have never met a professor who could not time manage like the way she structures her lectures. when she doesnt finish off her intended lecture she emails the rest of it to us. her voice is SO annoying and she can never directly answer a student's question. her lectures are extremely boring and excessively fragmented. i dont recommend this class.
Hard class. Maria is a great person and very approachable. But the tests are brutal. Not a GPA booster. I studied ALOT and still couldn't pass. I would stay away from this class. You can study like crazy but you won't get anywhere.
I am sure Maria is a great person, but she is a TERRIBLE teacher. She doesn't teach the material that you are expected to know (in great depth) for exams! DON'T take a class with her!!
This class isn't bad at all. She is a nice prof and puts a lot of work into helping students. It's easy to get a mark in the B+ range.
Don't take this class. The material is interesting, but if you want a good mark, don't bother because I studied more for this class than all my classes combined and I got a bad mark. Her short answer is absolutely rediculous, they barely even relate to the material. She ruined my interest in Family studies. Save yourselves!!
worst teacher ever!! avoid at all costs!!!
moderate professor, her lectures are easy to follow but are not very in depth. TESTS ARE BRUTAL, honestly, it's my lowest mark at university thus far. they are literally, impossible to do well in
beware of this teacher!!
wow. she is a horrible teacher. I took the class just becuase the ratings before hand said she was easy... what a surprise. She moved through the material incredibly fast. and her lectures was pointless. She was unable to plan her lessons and would often either go over time. or just send the rest of the lecture to the class through e-mails.Horrible
Lectures are scattered and never completed. She runs through the "common sense" material in class and expects you to learn the theories, research and experiments by yourself. Exams are Brutal!!! random m/c and incredibly difficult research questions (short answers) which are actually complex essays!
Ms. Weatherby is not that great of a teacher in class because she often runs out of time during lectures, however, she is extremely helpful when you need help. Her midterms (written section) is extremely easy, and based on her lecture notes, the written section is straight forward. Her multiple choice however is quite brutal, and confusing.
All the negative reviews sum up Weatherby nicely...her lectures focus on the more 'common sense' elements of the course but when it comes to the mid term, watch out because it's focused on the hard theories and experiments. M/C was exceptionally random and the written was very hard. NOT a GPA booster, nice person but seriously, avoid.
Like others have said. Terrible, not easy with her. Scatter brained, exams are HARD, even if you study, questions are worded oddly. She seems nice, but not nice with grades. AVOID THIS CLASS. TAKE WITH DIFFERENT PROF!
a lot of work for this class but if u do all the questions in her guideline then u'll do well in exams. mc's easy but short answer can b brutal if u dont know the material throughly. actually learned a lot nd enjoyed going to her lecture. not recommended for those looking for easy electives but people who actually wna learn human development
It was dreadful hearing her voice. She has this condescending tone to her. Scatterbrained, never finishes her lecture notes and emails pages worth of notes because she doesn't organize her lectures well. If this isn't a required course, and she isn't the only one teaching, don't take it.
easy course if you just focus on studying what she tells you to (her lecture notes, independent questions based on the textbook)
NOT an easy class, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. All of the exams were very difficult, the M/C was based almost solely on the independent questions; the written was based on lecture notes. Weatherby is sometimes hard to follow. Avoid this class as an elective, it's not a GPA booster: it tanked mine.
Just to say in one word : "avoid" What I heard before taking this course from her was "she is an esay marker" "if you are well prepared, you'll ace it" BUT! She is not that easy marker. Written part of Midterm was out of 10 marks when there were like 10 questions. If you don't answer thoroughly, you won't get any marks for each question.
To echo the negative comments, Weatherby is a horrible professor who made this somewhat interesting class unbelievably hard. I studied hard and barely scraped by. It's ridiculous. She's nice in person...but the tests are awful. Take this class with someone else!
Those who say that the tests are hard obviously haven't taken many psych courses. I found the MC's straightforward and the written section predictable. As long as you go to class and spend a few days studying before the test, you'll breeze through this course.
An amazing instructor! The best of all EPSE 423 instructors. Teaches things you will actually use in your career and are important to know. Is very dedicated to giving feedback and helping people through the assignments. Gives very detailed feedback on all work and assignments. Very clear and extremely helpful!
Don't take Family Studies 210 without having prior Psychology knowledge, she pretty much expects you to know terms and psychologists before taking the course. I found her tests and marking ridiculous. The text chosen was even worse. It's more of a developmental psychology course than family studies. I regret this class, I didn't learn anything!
I love develop. psych, and as a third year, decided to take this course for fun. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HER. Essentially she teaches wrong material, she doesn't understand Piaget's theories (for one) and ridicules him as "unintelligent." It's frankly offensive. Or spend 5 minutes explaining "scholar" and doesn't define Vygotsky's "scaffolding"
Maria is a dedicated, thorough and fascinating professor with a commitment to the real world and ideas that are new and on the cutting edge. Family Studies was a course I took on a whim and it paid off. Previous Psych involvement may help, but her amazing teaching styles and dedication will allow you to get through with flying colours!
She's a really good professor. Notes are clear and concise - she tells you exactly what to study for. Textbook reading isn't too bad because she gives you independent questions so you just have to read enough to be able to answer the questions (she tells you exactly which sections to read). Exams were not difficult, MC and short answer.
Excellent professor. Very concise and to the point. The independent questions are the stuff you get test on. Just need knowledge of Gr. 12 Biology and you will do well.
Great professor and easy course! Just go to class and you will do great =)
Great professor who is clear with her notes and exams (2 midterms, and final). She actually cares if her students understand her. It's like a dev psyc course.
Nice prof; clear and easy to follow. She provides indep. questions which are to be completed alongside the readings (not for marks), that show you what you need to read! Her tests are fair, though MC are sometimes tricky -though based off the indep. questions :). I mostly studied the nights and mornings before the exams and came out with a solid A.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GRADE BOOSTER - TAKE THIS CLASS!!! the only thing you need to make sure is that YOU GO TO CLASS 100%. There are 2 midterms that are split into two parts - one Multiplce choice section and a written. Then written is based 100% on class notes and the MC is from the questions assigned to each chapter. TAKE THIS CLASS! SO EASY.
This is the worst UBC has to offer. This class is simplistic and frustrating. I came into this class interested in the course material and genuinely wanting to learn but ended up listening to the exact same lecture every single day for an entire semester. This class should be renamed "Piaget's theories of learning development"-that's all she teache
She is a very compassionate, sensitive, and lovely person. Her lectures are interesting and heartfelt. I skimmed over some of her critics... For whoever said all she did was regurgitate Piaget, I'd have to say that you prob. skipped most of her classes because that truly was not the case. Hers is one of those you-get-out-what-you-put-in classes
I attended every single lecture but the lecture material was not mainly focused on the exam. I find the multiple very difficult and tricky. I ended up getting a C- for this course even though I spent a lot of time studying for the midterm and final. She also gets sidetracked wasted a lot of time in answer irrelevant questions in class.
Weatherby is a great prof! She's enthusiastic about the material and is extremely helpful. You HAVE to attend her lectures to do well. Really straight forward. Study efficiently and this class will be a GPA booster.
She is a really good lecturer. She speaks in a manor that is interesting and a little humerous. However, this class is pretty hard; text reading must be done vigeriously. The Indp. question are nice because she does not want you to read all the text. Do all the indp questions, review the notes and you should do well.
She is a very good speaker. The indp questions are nice as you do not have to read the entire chapter. Also nice that the whole marks is based on exams.
I am a FMST minor and I am barely scraping by. Short answer is awkwardly worded so you do not know what she is asking for! her MC's are really specific, but if you review a lot you can do all right on those. but try to avoid the class..she misses lots of classes and just talks about her nephew the whole time...whether he is relative or not.
if you've had her there's one new word i'm sure you all learned... apparently it's not cerebral cortex, it's "cortexT"...
really bad prof. dose not prepare students for the exams. she words them incomprehensibly and is never available for extra help. the independent questions are a far cry from being useful at all.
I am confused about the negative comments below. The class is very straightforward and she gives you all the information you need to know. No surprises and really fair exams! If you do the independent questions and readings you will do well!
I like Maria. She's friendly and clear, and will keep helping you until you get a concept. Her course is well-structured, with templates for every lecture and "independent questions" for the textbook. I don't think her exams are hard, but they are quite thorough. If you pay attention in class (and stay on top of your IQs at home), you'll do fine.
great prof funny and sexy
oops I meant Family studies 210
shes kind helpful beatiful and really enjoyed her class and I love her nephew stories
Although the lectures are quite dry/feel very long, she is crystal clear in what she expects you to learn/what you will be tested on. No assignments, just exams - and the exams are NOT cumulative! GPA booster, interesting course material, fair marker, decent teacher. Enjoy!
She's a very kind and approachable professor. She clearly tells you what you have to study and I found her lectures helpful and interesting. She was also very organized and had lecture templates for each class. Study thoroughly and do the independent questions and it'll be a GPA booster. By far my favourite class this term.
Prof. Weatherby is kind and approachable. However, I completely disagree with the comments suggesting she is a good professor. She regurgitates textbook information, is unclear and goes off on tangents, and the amount of time you spend working on the IQs is ridiculous. You shouldn't have to teach yourself 75% of course material. Not a good prof
This is not a mark booster. (Average was 68% this term) However, it is a straightforward class and she tells you exactly what you need to know. Too much material out of the textbook, but she does point you to the parts she wants you to focus on. Her lectures are quite dry and she teaches as if you are still in high school.
Do not take this class because you have heard it is easy. It is incredibly boring and pointless; it is all about memorizing a lot of statistics and definitions. If you are good at memorizing and do not expect any interesting content, then do take it. Maria is super boring and lectures consist of her reading out from her notes.
Honestly, it's hard to not get an A in this class. I was browsing through class marks and most people scored around 70 something. This class is really all memorization. She's not the most intriguing prof but she does lay out whatever that is going to be tested quite clearly. Her exams include filling out charts... High school level material I'd say
I disagree with the above comments. I liked her a lot! She's really clear and the lectures were super interesting.
Super easy, got 98% on the midterm with a decent amount of studying, final 93%. Attendance is mandatory because she gives specific notes not in the textbook. She's very sweet too, overall good class! may be boring at some points and she talks about her niece and nephew a lot.
Although her midterms and final are easy, you shouldn't think you can easily pull off an A because she marks the group project really harshly. It's matter of passing for this project, which is worth 30%...
She was really helpful and nice. As long as you put in some effort to review, come to class, and actually contribute to the group project, you'll do fine. I really enjoyed this class.
Course material is not hard, but you do need to study it because Maria likes details and marks meticulously. She also provides detailed lecture notes, so you should attend class. Lectures are sometimes interesting, sometimes boring. She does talk about her niece and nephew a lot, but it's cus it relates to the subject. Group project worth 30%.
Weatherby is possibly the most unethical prof I have ever encountered. She doesn't accept medical notes which is absolutely the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. I am genuinely interested in the subject matter yet somehow she manages to make it so dry. She's the only prof who teaches this class so if you want to take it your screwed.
Not inspiring at all. HARD marker. Midterm average was 65% and she also marked projects very hard. The class was not interesting at all. If you are not a huge fan of FMST, avoid.
Maria is an excellent prof, the people who give negative feedback likely don't show up to class or have difficulty with basic comprehension skills- fairly easy course but you do have to put in some effort if you want to do well. Very helpful and takes time after class to answer any questions and provides you with all the resources u need to do well
Maria is a slow and hard marker. She does not meet deadlines, but expects students to - late marks given out when you don't hand in assignments at the beginning of class. I took FMST 210 and expected the course to be similar, but she only gives article readings which students can do themselves.. this course was a waste of my time and money. AVOID!
Maria is a wonderful prof! She let's you know EXACTLY what is going to on the exam. I ended up getting 91% in the class and I didn't work that hard. People who gave her negative reviews either did not show up for class (attendance is mandatory because there are no lecture slides), or they just didn't bother studying
Maria is a nice professor, however her class is very boring and very unmotivating. It was nice that there was no textbook, however when marking exams she was a very hard marker. All short answer, but she is clear what will be on the exam. Watch out for the group projects and individual inquiry, worth alot, and I got screwed over in the end.
She's a great prof. No textbook, only articles. Easy to read. She let's you know exactly what you're looking for and makes it easy to find in the papers.
Great prof! Definitely enjoyed her class and her teaching style. She writes out her notes, very simple and to the point. Very approachable and helpful.
Her lecturing methods are really helpful and easy. She writes out her notes on an overhead projector. She does, however, have an attitude, and once she gets the wrong impression of you, there's no way of turning back, and it'll reflect on her grading. Its unfortunate.
Defs not a GPA booster course. Her marking is all over the place, and she's not specific about what she expects from your written responses on exams. Takes marks off for stupid things, sometimes resulting in a low grade
I found the lectures to be quite interesting actually! Maria really incorporates her real life experiences into the concepts that she teaches. She is definitely a picky grader in terms of written responses on her exams, but I find her grading scheme to be fair overall. She is very clear about what she will ask on an exam. Take it! :)
Maria was an amazing prof for FMST 210 so I decided to take 312 with her. This was a mistake. Although the content itself and exams are not too difficult, Maria does not teach. She goes off into tangents too often and honestly, the lectures are extremely boring. It also doesn't help that if you don't participate in class, there goes 3% of your mark
I was super pumped for this class in December, and was fiddling with the idea of even minoring in FMST. But now thanks to Maria I'm doubting that. At first she seems like a pretty decent and cool prof but as you get into the term you'll realize that she's super random with exam questions, 2 and 4th exams are basically IQ'S with random questions.
Took this as an upper-credit elective, as it sort of relates a bit to my psyc courses. Honestly, participation marks (3%) helped me with my weaknesses (i.e. increase participation skills, knowing my material, etc.) so I don't mind. In-class quizzes once a week from readings (journal articles), 1 midterm and 1 final. Helpful and outgoing prof :)
This course was essentially memorization of weekly homework assignments. You read one article every week (not so bad) and then take a quiz every Tuesday which is based almost entirely on the assignment for the article. The problem is to do well on the midterm and final you have to basically memorize every assignment to do well.
I took 210 with Maria and expected 312 to be relatively the same. It was a hundred times more difficult. What she teaches in class is NOT what you expect to find on the exams and her weekly quizzes are a hit or miss on easiness. This class was a waste of my money and time, do not take it!
Three words: super meticulous marker. You really have to be specific in your short answers or else you lose a lot of marks. A lot of the material tested on the midterms were based on her IQ's (assigned questions that you had to answer on your own time from reading). So basically you have to teach yourself A LOT of the course material.
Really enjoyed the class. Very easy to do well if you put in the work effort. A lot to memorize and read but as long as you attend all lectures + take good IQ notes- youll do well! The harder you work in this class the higher the mark
Maria is very to-the-point and gives you everything you need to succeed. There are a few times when what she expects as high-quality is a bit abstract, but as you get used to her teaching style it gets better. DO THE IQs, and REVIEW. This is memorization-heavy but her lectures are funny and interesting. Great prof, very fair in her marking.
made an interesting subject incredibly boring and difficult. horrible prof! avoid at all costs
Maria is confident and seems friendly. However, she is a really tough marker. When she tells you what she expects for answers, it literally means writing the exact answer word for word, or you won't get the marks. The best I've done in her exams are MCs. I would recommend taking this class only if you are truly interested in FMST.
Dr. Weatherby impressed me with her caring nature, she is approachable and really tries to tell you what will be on the test! She tries not to let you study for everything like all the other profs who like being elusive and secretive. She cares for you, talks about amazing stories. I would say she is akin to a mother figure who is warm and caring.
Very meticulous marker. You must put word for word answers from the notes in order to received full marks. Maria emails lecture templates and fills them out in class, so you must attend. The class was pretty chill; I never found myself bogged down with work from FMST 210. I'm bad at psyc and more into math so I found it tough. Good and helpful prof
Hard to tell what will be on the exams. She gives you 45 minutes for 55 questions. Which is fine for some but for slower readers it doesn't seem that fair. She also makes the subject boring and her notes don't match exam content. Read the text book and prepare to answer a lot of "which statement is false" questions. Only take if you need to.
The class itself is not hard; however, the way Weatherby writes the exams makes it very difficult to achieve a good mark. Her written portions require very specific answers, and if it's not basically word for word, points are deducted. A lot of her answers on the mc portions requires attention to small details; not an easy course.
Nice woman, and definitely has a straight forward teaching method like high school. Only thing I didnt like about her were the fact that some of her exam questions were which one from the list is wrong. Other than that though a fairly easygoing prof and class.
It's rare to have a prof who is as caring and motherly as Maria. She is very clear about what she expects and what we should focus on studying. Great course content and a very applicable to real life course. Highly recommend!
Maria's lectures are very straightforward, and she tells you which parts of the textbook you will be tested on (so you don't have to read the entire thing). She's also very approachable if you have questions about the concepts or about your test marks. If you're really good at memorization and you study hard, you'll do well on the tests.
I had mixed feelings because it is a special lecture style. Sometimes slightly boring as it seems everything said is only targeted towards an exam and not because it is actually interesting/controversial. But Maria tries to make it more interesting with some personal stories. Overall, easy exams when you study/complete IQ's. Would take again.
really picky graders and she asks you to be very specific than what the questions actually ask for. definitely a nice lecturer who is inspirational, yet not an easy course to recommend for those who are looking for electives. people think it is really straightforward to take exams, but you will know how picky she is when you actually see ur exams
Easy, straightforward class. I took it in the summer and it was not bad at all.
Nice prof who was clear about expectations! I found that I really enjoyed this subject because of her. Some may have found her boring, but I liked how straightforward she was.
Awesome Prof!! Genuinely a really nice person and she's very clear about exam expectations :)
Honestly, throughout my whole bachelors studies at UBC, her lectures and materials are what I have retained the most although I was studying at another faculty. RESPECT HER AND BE RESPECTED. If you really go by the outline and complete all the tasks, you would actually get a fantastic mark.
terrible!!! never again! i hate her voice and the way she teaches in class... doesn't make any sense... :((
Honestly, I went into this class very excited, and I was very disappointed. She words her exams to trick you, I spent hours and days preparing for the exam and the highest I ever got was a 65. She just reads her notes and adds new ones, would not take this with her.
Her course is very structured and her expectations are honestly crystal clear: she outlines clearly what she is looking for if you want to do well on the tests. That being said, she is a bit picky with short answer so be sure to explain yourself clearly. Also, for her MC tests; 1 advice: pay ATTENTION TO DETAILS (in the IQs) and study EVERYTHING :)
Very clear expectations for exams, if you did well in PSYC 101/102 you will do well in this class too. Tests are not cumulative, but she is a very picky marker for short answer. You need to go to class as she doesn't post answers online!
She is THE WORST. She acts like she's super nice and wants you to succeed, but she is the hardest marker I have ever had in university. She tells you what will be on the test but when you answer with the answers given in class, she "wants more". DO NOT take this course as a GPA booster. Unfair marker and unrealistic expectations on the test.
Maria wasn't bad. I found the class enjoyable, although she talks about her nephew so much it took me a few weeks to figure out that it wasn't her own child. Exams were clearly outlined, take this class if you will actually study, if you don't, it would be easy to fail.
Maria is the best man, so relatable and makes class fun and keeps you engaged at all times. This is one of the classes at UBC where you actually get to relate to real life situations. Exams are not bad if you keep up, she makes VERY clear as to what her expectations are, so failing is not an option. She is pretty hot also, so makes class easy ;)
put in the effort ... you'll do absolutely fine! Maria was awesome. I loved her down to earth attitude. I loved how she related stuff to real life. Enjoyed this class.
I took Family Studies 210 thinking it would be an easy class to get done in the first summer semester. I just finished first year taking no soci or psych classes and didn't think a course like family studies would need previous knowledge. This is only a GPA booster for 3rd or 4th year soci/psych students. I worked so hard and still got a D.
Her lectures are really boring, I find myself about to fall asleep every class, but you have to go every class because she basically tells you what's on the exam. If you study off exactly what she says you'll probably pass, but if you aren't a great memorizer don't expect a stellar mark.
She tells you what she expects from you (literally tells you what's on the exam) and all she asks is for you to bring templates to class. This is an easy course to get an A as long as you go to class and take notes. She also gives lots of examples to go with her lectures to help you remember concepts. She can get off-topic but I don't mind that.
She is really nice and makes the material easy to understand. Even though she points out a lot of what you should know for the tests, the tests aren't easy. Also not a good grade booster.
DOESNT CARE, TOUGH GRADER, EXPECT TOO MUCH,
I find myself half asleep during her class no matter how much coffee I drink. I've never forgotten to take lecture-only notes until this class. She might give you the gist of what's going to be on the exam, but her MC questions are phrased terribly. Her class made me sad. Not a GPA booster unless you study real hard . Also not fun at all
I'm not sure for other courses with her, but if you take FMST 210 with her let me tell you, even if you do all the work, attend lectures, and study for the tests, and even through all that, at most you'll get a C. Do not take this class as a GPA booster. And the course is basically all on the scientific method and theories, not even on families...
FMST 210 is a really fun, interesting course plus it's really easy to get an A. Maria tells you what are on the exams and her questions are super straight forward. All you have to do is just memorize the lecture templates, and do the independent questions on your own time. Course is non-cumulative too which is even better. Loved this course!
I took this class as an elective and I can firmly say that it was the worst decision of my life!!! Her lectures are extremely boring and she doesn't post slides and asks very specific questions covered only in the lectures on her exams so if you skip you'll probably end up failing. The MC questions were also very tricky and difficult. AVOID HER!!!
Took FMST 312 as an elective, this prof is extremely hard. DO NOT take this as a GPA booster.
I love her lectures so much. She's a great professor and teacher. She is also a very nice person who tries to encourage her students outside of class.
fmst210 is not an easy class and Weatherby makes sure of it! my class avg was 65% which says a lot. only a handful of students will consider this a true GPA booster so beware!!!
Took Maria last year, she was nice! Midterm, final and 5% participation mark. If you aren't good at test taking, not recommended. If you are great at memorizing, easy GPA booster. The exams were 150 marks ish, so you must know every little thing and all written. However she says which questions are on the exam! (at least when I took it she did)
Great GPA booster if you want a break from writing and want to memorize simple terms and concepts. Lots of common psych concepts (e.g. Freud, operant conditioning etc.). Lectures are SO easy - she gives handouts then fills out the handout for you during lecture - all you have to do is copy and memorize the info. Easy readings.
