Mrs. Gardner was a really nice lady, clear, definitely told you what she wanted you to know, but this class is no cake walk. Her tests are hard, so you will have to study a lot. But, she is helpfully and highly recommended.
Fabulous professor. Very friendly and accessible. Tests are detailed, but she gives very good review sessions and is clear about what to expect. Coursepak is great and lectures are well ordered and well planned.
I studied my butt off for each and every exam and the grades never showed it. She manages to find that ONE SINGLE detail that she hardly mentioned, study the bare essentails. Also, if you have questions don't bother asking. She is super defensive and arrogant and is horrible at answering direct questions. I would not reccomend her, esp. not summer.
Horrible teacher. Knows what she is talking about but cannot present it well. She also cannot use the clicker system correctly. The only perk is that she grades easy on papers, which boost your grade and the course pack makes it so you don't have to pay attention in class.
I took her summer class, and it was a tough 5 weeks. The course pack made the class much easier but keeping up with all the lectures so quickly was hard. The tests were very difficult, luckily HW and paper grades pull your grade up. Questions for tests of HW are not answered directly. Pretty difficult.
This teacher was amazing! I came in to her class not knowing a thing about genetics(and truthfully only wanted to get my credits out of the way). By the end of the class, I wanted to swtich my major to genetics. She was able to spark my interest in science like no other teacher had before. Her tests are hard if you do not attend the in class review
This class seems easy until the first test. And she seems nice until you go up and talk to her. Her tests are probably the hardest iv ever taken. She outlines exactly whats on it, but its a huge amount of information and you better know every detail, important or not, backwards and forwards. Don't expect any extra time to finish your test tho
she grades by points. Have to ge3t 500 points in the class to get and A+ There is an opportunity to get up to 550 points but u only need the 500 to get the top grade
She is a good teacher. Go to class you can get all of the clicker points from the in class quizes. Study her book, that is all you need to do to get a good grade on her tests. her lectures follow the book exactly. STUDY THE BOOK! and you will do well in this class
I LOVE DR GARDNER! She's a wonderful teacher, fair grader, and extremely helpful! Study questions for tests, extra credit offered frequently, and goes over everything in class very clearly and slowly so as to help you fully understand. She's very helpful, responds to emails quickly, and answers questions without making you feel stupid. LOVE HER!
She is an excellent professor. Her teaching developed an interest in me about the subject of Genetics. She is extremely helpful, makes lectures interactive and provides the students an insight in the subject. Her tests are a bit tough, but she gives enough scope for extra credit! My tip:Please don't take this class in your freshman year.
There is nothing said in class that cannot be learned from the textbook. Power points are basically the textbook copy and pasted. There is more information on the test than ever is explained through lecture or problem session.
feel like she wants her students to do poorly, doesn't give partial credit on tests and counts of 2x if you miss a problem (1x for what the answer should have been and 1x for the one you put down) Exams are tough, expect to study your butt off
Mrs. Gardner is really nice! She's friendly and very helpful outside of class. However, her class is no cake walk. The tests are extremely hard and she doesn't drop any of them. She does, however, give you plenty of opportunities for extra credit, which is a total grade saver!
Took her for 301 as a freshman second semester. Tests are not super difficult although contain information that was only skimmed over in class or random statistics. Not as interesting as it sounds. She does offer a lot of extra credit, around 30/500 points. Lectures are sometimes boring and she isn't the nicest. Large workload for an elective.
At the beginning I thought the class was going to be a breeze. Lecture information is interesting but the exams are really hard. It's a ton of information and only a tiny portion of it is on the test, so it's definitely a lot to memorize. It's beneficial to go to class because you get extra credit points.
The attendance grade was based off of clicker questions, if you got the question-of -the-day wrong, you received 0pts for attendance that day. Also, I visited her office hours many times for help on HW and she repeatedly told me "I will not give you the answers". I needed direction, not an answer, or her attitude. Read the book for help!
Her online lectures were around 20 mins. You should print the study guide for test first thing and take notes from lectures as you watch them. This is essential for tests. Tests are fairly detailed, so you must know the lectures well. Put the time into this class, and you will do well. Don't buy the textbook.
This class was not what I was expecting. This lady was not helpful, and depended more upon her magic clicker than focusing on the material. Fortunately there were enough notes floating around that I could make due without having to depend upon her.
Chances are you've read/seen Harry Potter. Gardner reminded me of Umbridge, tbh. Her exams are hard, but most of the material comes from the lectures - which she posts online. Definitely go to the problem sessions, the TA's really help you understand material since she goes so fast in class, plus extra credit!!!!
I really enjoyed Gen & Human Affairs, and thought it provided a nice overview and refresher for what I could expect in my major, since I was a first-semester freshman going into a molecular bio major, I did the class under an honors contract for honors credit, and that was easy to do. There's very little homework and she posts lectures online.
She's a great teacher that cares about her students. Would highly recommend 10/10.
Gardner is a great professor and I'm not sure why these reviews say otherwise. The tests are easy if you use the study guide, there isn't much work (8 homework assignments that take no more than an hour to complete), and you can talk to your neighbor about clicker questions which she uses for participation points. Don't buy the textbook!
Took her for the honors section of 311. I thought the tests were hard and super specific, but completely fair game. She does lecture really quickly and can be a bit unclear at times, but overall really good. Go to her for help if you need it because she's willing to help!
She's a nice lady & the material is interesting, however she cares more about the clicker than teaching. You get counted absent even if you're present if you choose the incorrect answer for the clicker question. Tests are short but extremely difficult. She gives study guides, but they aren't helpful. Long, bulleted points of all course objectives.
She's very sweet and is really receptive to students who show that they care about the class. But you're going to have to work hard. I would definitely suggest going to the TA's office hours during the week for help on the homework. She takes attendance through clicker questions in class, so definitely go to class!
Took the class online and it wasn't too bad. Lots of homework assignments with 1 due every week for each unit. They're usually due on the same day of the week but sometimes they change which makes it easy to miss 1 or 2 so pay attention to the due dates. Biggest knock against her is the fact she doesn't allow you to review your tests for the final.
Dr. Gardner is an effective lecturer, and the homework she gives is similar to how she tests. You will have to study her lecture notes thoroughly. Her tests can cover a lot of material. That being said, I regret only going to her office hours once (before the final). She is really good at explaining answers 1-on-1 and is very approachable
Dr. Gardner makes exams that are terrible. She puts stuff on there that she mentions once during lecture. Her exams were extremely poorly made.
Dr. Gardner is the most approachable professor I've had here at State, and is always open to giving feedback to help you succeed. The course is a lot of material and it all goes by very fast, but the final isn't cumulative. She gives a few small opportunities for extra credit, and I highly reccomend going to office hours/problem sessions.
Dr. Gardner is great, and she teaches GN301 very well. A lot of the slides/material from GN301 are exactly the same in GN311 because she helped develop the course. Dr. Gardner is very easy to work with provided that you do your work and are really trying to understand the material. Tests are at DELTA but they are fair. 10/10 would recommend GN301.
Took this online. The pacing can be intense at times as many lectures are very long and you have to do at least one 4 days/wk. Tests weren't unfair but were challenging. The TA problem solver videos were super helpful. I struggled to get through lectures because of how boring and dry the material is, but unfortunately it's a required class.
The class was a lot of work but if you study and take good notes and do the homework and extra credit you should be fine. Dr Gardner was really nice.
Professor Gardner is a great teacher, but the class isnt the easiest. I havent taken a science in a few years so this class was a struggle, but if you put in the work and do the extra credit, you can still get a great grade in the end.
Open book, open notes, closed friend. This class is NOT a breeze. The beginning is very math-heavy (make a spreadsheet with formulas!!). One homework due every week. One extra credit assignment per test. provides a fill in the blank/guided notes (do not turn in). She is extremely personable and understands that life is hard.
Super kind lady!! Open note tests and she provides study guides and guided notes for her lectures. Offers extra credit and her tests directly reflect her lectures. Sends emails to remind you about homework too.
This professor is okay. The lectures are super long and detailed, but shes extremely knowledgeable. She does respond well to emails, but if you do bad on the tests the homework isnt enough to bring your grade up much.
GN 311 is a tough class, however, Dr. Gardner makes it as easy to follow as possible. She gives you plenty of resources to practice problems, holds office hours, review sessions, you name it. During the summer, all 5 tests were open notes, which was nice. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time on this class and its content because there's a LOT!
Online class should be taught with camera so students can ask questions during material. There is so many ways understanding certain materials on the lectures can go wrong. TAs, practice sessions are helpful. But absolutely awful class
This needs to be taught with a camera if its online. Go to review sessions and always email TA's. This class crams too much material in each lecture and needs to be taught with a camera so students can ask questions. There are too many opportunities for misunderstandings and miinterpretations of course material!
For an online teacher, she's great! Her notes are always very clear and I was normally ready for every test. The tests are also open-note and open-book so you really want to make sure you take good notes.
A lot of work, a lecture every single day to take notes on + other assignments. Don't take this class if you don't have a lot of time. The tests were tough and you definitely need to study for them. The material was very accessible though and clear. Gardner responded to emails quickly and was very helpful
Took this class as a psychology major and did not think it was too hard. It was entirely online, but the lectures and guided notes were helpful in understanding the material. Although tests are open-note, it is beneficial to study beforehand. Professor Gardner seems nice, and assignments were usually graded pretty quickly.
The class is hard. Took it over the summer and you need to study and practice the homework and lecture questions non-stop. Great class if you are good at self-teaching material. If not, I recommend taking it with someone else in person. Exams are "open notes", but you're going to have to study because the time limit per exam makes them tough.
I took this class having already taken a Genetics class at NC State. However, the class overall is not bad at all. There are PowerPoint lectures and guided notes that go along. Dr. Gardner is great about sending weekly emails to remind students of everything going on which is nice since the class was a distance education course.
This was a difficult class, but I felt like her expectations, grading criteria, and lectures were very clear. I will admit it was hard to do during a 5wk summer session when I had another class and a job, but if you're able to focus solely on this it might not be too bad. You need to stay on top of your work because getting behind does not go well.
Ms. Gardner is very intelligent & obviously really knowledgeable in her field. This does not translate well to students. I was in a group chat for the class and consistently, people were scoring well below 70s after hours of studying, we would group study and help each other as much as we could, probs the hardest class ive taken and i took physics!
Dr. gardener is a sweet person but I do not recommend the online structure of her class for gn 311; she goes way faster than the other classes
Dr.Gardner is an alright professor, her lectures aren't very interesting. I would not take this class if you think it will be an easy A, it's more real genetics than the human affairs part of it and pretty detailed. Only 3 tests with no final and hw thats graded for accuracy. Not necessarily a difficult class but more effort than expected.
This was the first year that exams were NOT open note. Exams are taken at delta. There are 5-10 lectures for each exam containing about 40-75 slides of information EACH. Exams would have specific questions about one small piece of information from a single one of those 600 slides. Information was hard to find directly. Kind person, hard class.
Dr. Gardner knows her material and is passionate about genetics. This semester was closed book and notes taken at the Delta center. The lectures were so long and there were four-five a week. I studied for so long for exams but my grades never showed it. So much material for every exam. You would be fine if this was your ONLY class.
Literally sucks, she assigns homework the same week as exams. Each lecture is 50+ slides and there are about 2-4 lectures assigned each week. Do not take the asynchronous version of this class if you want to be stressed 24/7. Homework kinda easy but exams just don't line up with the practice problems provided. DONT TAKE BETTY.
5 exams and 15 HW in the course and had guided notes. Very knowledge in her field and nice but had unrealistic expectations for this course. You're expected to be able to memorize ALL the information from 300+ SLIDES from lectures and then she cherry picks what she wants on the 15-20 question exam. My only saving grace were the extra credits.
I have nothing against Dr. Gardener, she is a sweet lady but do not take her for GN 311. We went 2 weeks faster than the other genetics sections and our exams were exponentially harder, because we weren't given time to process information. that said if you take her GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS or you will do bad
5 exams, 15 HW, and guided notes for the course. She's nice but had unrealistic expectations for the course. Expected to memorize 300+ SLIDES of lecture material and then cherry picks what to put on the 15-20 question exam. Exams 1,2 & 5 math based and had to memorize formulas. My only saving grace were the extra credits.
Dr Gardner is a sweet older lady who really enjoys Genetics and is very knowledgeable about it. She gives guided notes to each lecture you can print and basically a study guide for each chapter she lectures on. In my opinion she is very informative and clear with what is most important for the test.
Dr. Gardner was a great professor. While her class is on the harder side she makes the material easy to understand and is accessible outside of class. She will work with you to understand things but if you don't try then you won't pass. There is a lot of material thrown at you for this class so make sure you study. She is caring and easy going.
This is an extremely tough course and requires a lot of your time if you want to do well. This is an online course, but Dr. Gardner has many resources and helpful videos on moodle to help you understand. She is always very quick to email back when you have questions about the material. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT.
Very lovely lady but often forgets the students taking her class aren't quite as smart as her and will explain difficult concepts very poorly. Exams are fairly difficult and I found that even if I studied for multiple hours for weeks, my grade just would not reflect that. Homework is fairly easy with three attempts given and there's extra credit.
She is a great prof and her lectures are easy to follow. She has many extra credit opportunities to help with grades because her tests are slightly difficult. You have to study pretty hard but if you understand what is going on you will get a B minimum. The quizzes allow 3 attempts and often repeat questions so you can get 100s every time. Take her
If you have taken GN311 already, this is a simple elective class. Much of the information is just memorizing what different disorders are and how different things relate to public health. The exams for DE are in Delta and they can be a little difficult and there is not a lot of good study resources besides just the PowerPoints.
Dr. Gardner gave amazing lectures full of all the information we needed for exams! She was also very patient and understanding, always ready to answer questions and available outside class. As long as you use the guided notes and review questions, you'll ace the class with no problem. Also loved all the extra credit possible (15-20 points)!
Gardner means really well but the course is VERY fast paced. Homework consisting of 5-10 questions, not just multiple choice but multipart math ones as well, each week. Tests encompass a lot of material, review material that is more general and over-arching. Tests are at Delta and don't bother with the textbook, only 1st HW needs it.
Not too difficult of a course, but very dense. Was given 5 exams, 15 homeworks, and 5 extra credit. Relies a lot on powerpoints (40 of them) with voiceovers, most of them being 40+ slides. Says the textbook is required but don't get it. Had to spend a few hours on each lecture, homework, and study session so if you've got the time it's an easy A
This course had 3 difficult exams that count for the majority of your grade. You have homework due each week that is relatively easy as long as you have taken the notes from lecture. Professor provides a notes outline for each lecture that is very helpful, so make sure to take notes or you will not do well. She is always available to meet in person
Not even halfway through the semester I was told I should not be in the course anymore. This professor seems to have no hope for her students and cannot get over someone not making a 100 on every little thing. Also the exams have very few questions that are worth a lot of points. Miss one question, fail the whole exam.
I took this class my first semester of my Freshman year. I struggled with the material and whenever I reached out she suggested I shouldn't be in the class. Would not recommend. Tests and lectures do not align.
This class is VERY lecture heavy. Sometimes lectures of 60+ slides. USE THE GUIDED NOTES SHE PROVIDES! I wasted a lot of time trying to handwrite at the beginning. You get 3 attempts on all HW and EC assignments. Fair grading and tests were formatted similar to HW/EC questions. You have to study to succeed. Make Quizlets and be prepared to WORK.
The class itself was fair however, it did contain so much information on each test. It was a lot of information that it was a whelming amount to study but if you study the exams are easy. She provides a lot of extra credit and you get 3 attempts on each very helpful homework. I would take this class if you are good with a lot of material.
Very lecture heavy but very nice
Professor Gardner is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. The information was extremely interesting and I enjoyed attending class however she mostly just read off of slides and it was hard to take notes at times. Tests are not that bad, she gives extra credit, and she is accessible outside of class.
Dr. Gardner is well spoken and makes most topics in the course clear. I would warn though she tends to save the most intense and long units for test weeks. Seriously, almost every time there were tests for the course there were also 150+
This class, as an online class, takes up a lot more time than you would expect. You need to take time to study and take notes on the online lectures or you will not do well. What I disliked the most was that for exams it would be a ton of study material and the exams were short, so you never knew what to study. Interesting class though!
worst professor ever
only take this class if you have no other class or a life
just awful
doesn't care about you but expects you to be a genius
Came across as very belittling whenever I went to her to go over my exam. Shows that she doesn't care
im really surprised by all of the negative reviews, i found the class to be very interesting and easy, and there was plenty of extra credit to bring up ur grade. exams could be tricky but like, not really. dr gardner is a very sweet woman and i can tell she's passionate about the material
Awesome professor. I had her at 8:30 and this class actually helped get me out of bed. Very interesting and informative. Took 1 star away because anything she mentions in lecture is fair game for the exam unless she says something. Make sure to study EVERYTHING. She likes to put very niche questions on the exams that she touched on briefly.
This class is definitely lecture heavy but if you are interested in genetics and have a background in biology I would say this class is pretty easy. Lots of interesting concepts and you don't need to memorize every little detail. Very little homework and she gives lots of easy extra credit assignments throughout the year which is nice.
Pretty easy class if you are even a little bit interested in genetics. Very lecture heavy but there is very little homework which makes up for it. Also gives lots of extra credit assignments which are an easy grade boost. There is no final exam which was awesome.
This is a great genetics class. Super laid back and easy to understand. Make sure you attend all classes so you don't get behind, but there are lots of extra credit. Also all the homeworks have 3 tries so not too bad if you know what you are doing. I really recommend if you need an easy science.
Exams are NOT based on the study guides so be prepared to take thorough notes. She likes to slip in topics that are covered briefly on exams. There are extra credit opportunities but you need to get all the questions right, not just by participation. Practice problems do not go over answers step-by-step so go to a tutor and study!
This class really isn't as bad as people say. GN is a lot of content no matter what, you just have to know how to manage time well. There are 4 modules and everything is open, so you can get ahead and do hw in advance. Exams are specific, but fair if you study. Lectures are long, but the examples are helpful and she gives many resources for help.
I loved this class so much. I truly think that Dr. Gardner's lectures are the reason I did so well in this class. They were pretty easy to understand and she did a great job walking you through any difficult problems. If you are comfortable with the pacing of online classes you will succeed in this class. There are 16 hw assignment and 4 tests.
If you want to dedicate all your time to one class and forget about your other classes, take this one. The tests are tough — no notes, no cheat sheets, nothing is allowed, unlike other online exams. There are a lot of assignments, so be prepared to study and read everything just to barely pass.
Dr. Gardner is a very nice person and will help you understand concepts of genetics that you're confused on. Her grading on the otherhand was extremely confusing, not letting you review your tests without being at her office hours, putting vague topics on the exams. If you take her, get ready to study ALOT.
There's so much material just for the exams to be 25 questions. For the online course, we are expected to complete 3 lectures a week and each were 40+ slides long. The math problems on exams are over 25% of your exam grade so if you get that wrong, you're already knocked down to an 80. You can't review your exam unless you go to her office hours.
This course can be hard and memorizing dense, I have found exams to be somewhat difficult, but she is easily accessible and caring!
The class was not recorded for free speech reasons which made it inconvenient because you can't miss a class or you will get lost on which slides to take notes on. Dr. Gardner remained very neutral and professional during discussions which was great, another reason why it could have probably still been recorded. I like that there are only 3 exams.
She is so sweet and engaging in class, but there is sooo much material to study, only for the exam to take me 15 minutes to finish! If you're not interested in Genetics, don't take this class; it'll be terrible. But if you are, it's really not that bad.
