Mrs. Douglas is a very nice lady but her tests are very hard. Most of her tests do not reflect her lectures or homework assignments.
Ms. Douglas is an excellent lecturer. She prepares her students to be successful in Organic Chemistry. She is always available to help students, and very encouraging to students who need it.
great teacher
She is very hard, but you learn a lot. You MUST study and if she says it once it is fair game for the test! (So you can't miss class) Good Luck!
excellent professor!!
all teachers should teach like her. always willing to help you. easy to understand and your lecture notes prepare you for her tests
Wonderful teacher! She expects a lot out of you...but it is a good thing. She is always there for the students...at any time! I recommend her to all incoming chemistry students!
She is always willing to help. Tests are tough in that they do not always reflect lecture material. I recommend taking only this science class and lab with no others in a semester. It is quite a lot of work. You have to pay close attention. Great sense of humor and keeps you interested.
Very good teacher who is always willing to help. Recommend chasing after someone who has taken her class to get old test, old material and see how asks questions so you know what to expect. New test will be different from old test. Definitely use office hours to help Tests you on critical thinking skills. 1/3 of her class are re-taking her cla
Her lectures touch only the surface for her tests which can be tricky beware. Can't believe that you get knocked off points for % error in lab. very strict with significant digits, get all the points you can in the class
This class requires a lot a lot of your time. Prelab, quizzes in lecture and lab, and test. Rushes through lecture and would recommend that she allows time in between her lectures and quizzes for questions and clarifications.
Well, nice person but hard as hell! Would only recommend taking her if it were the only class you were taking. She makes time to help her students, but very awkward to approach. So, study hard, do your homework, and don't plan on having a life outside of her class and you might be ok. Lots of luck!
you have to do an element paper, if you have to take her sometime, suggest you ask her about the guidelines about the for the element paper and before the first day of class, tell her what element you want to do so you can have first dibs on it.
She is hard. She intimidated me. There are a lot of quizzes so you have to stay on top of things. If you do then you will do fine. There is a paper that you have to on an element. You can chase her down to get extra help, and she will provide it, but it's too much work. I thought she was too harsh with her material!
She enjoys giving quizzes, but she assigns homework problems that directly correlate to the questions on the quizzes. If one does badly in the class, it is more than likely because he or she is lazy. She is always willing to help, but beware of her true/false questions on tests.
Teaches well enough for you to understand the overall concept, but tests are intentionally tricky and different from what she teaches. You do have to keep up with ALL of the work because of quizzes for every chapter. You are more than welcomed to come by her office after class for help, but if you have another class to go to, you are out of luck
she was great, its not an easy class but she is a good teacher and you must put forth a little effort. I made sure to take her for chem 1 and 2
Great teacher. Knows her topic. Extremely fast paced.
Difficult. Sweet in a condescending way. Thinks her class is the most important, don't take another class w/ hers this will take up all your time. Lab only worth a 4th of the grade. Tests only have 1/4th of the material from lecture, rest from book. No bonus points, no study guides. Counts off for % error, sig digits. Quiz happy. Break neck speed.
Sure she's nice, but if you're pursuing a career in anything dealing with chemistry,DO NOT TAKE HER, she will make you think twice. She makes the course much more difficult than it needs to be.She assumes you have no life or class other than her class. I had to drop her class for fear of lowering by GPA,and I plan to take my chem courses elsewhere.
This woman is terrible! Treats you like a 4th grader, rude, and annoying. Difficult to approach. I think she's just a sour old woman personally. But the fact is she can't teach.
I f-ing love Mrs. Douglas. She's one tough ****, but you'll definitely learn something. Watch out on tests; she likes to pull fast ones on you. Do your homework, go to class, and you'll be fine.
She takes pride in her class being hard.thinks that you should know the material b4 she "teaches" it. she could be a good teacher.but i think she wants a lot of ppl 2 fail.I think she thinks she is doing her job if it is hard o pass the class.she gave us 1 1/2 days notice that we would be tested over 103 elements that we also had 2 know how 2 spel
NIGHTMARE IF YOU DON'T START HOMEWORK RIGHT OFF!!!!! TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH KNOW SIG FIGS AND EVERYTHING ABOUT CHEM OR YOU ARE SUNK! Don't give popular answers for questions! Try someone else.
Pushes for details. Will learn a lot.
Mrs. douglas is a fabulous teacher! she isnt really hard.. cuz if you do your hmwk and pay attention you can figure out every question she asks. she may move a little on the quick side but she ALWAYS asks if anyone has any questions before she clears the board or if anyone has any questions then to let her know before she moves on. shes wonderful!!
I found Mrs. Douglas to be interesting, but her class hardly scratched the surface. Other professors seem to have offered classes in which you really are challenged to learn chemistry, and hers was more of a high school class. She is very condescending and treats all students as if they are dewey-eyed freshmen with no clue about anything.
Extremely Condescending. Don't be afraid to ask questions. She may treat you like crap, but she will answer them. She has taught Chem 1 for over 30 years. So she knows the basic material very well. Just don't be surprised when the tests and quizes have questions that weren't covered in your textbook. They're probably from some text 20 years ago
She moved fast, but explained the material very well. Didn't do a lick of homework, and did excellent on the tests. Tests came straight from the lecture; take good notes and study them. She does require quite a bit of work, but that is to be expected when going to college. I highly recommend her!
Hard working instructor who provides a great deal of insight in why things are the way they are. She tries to not only teach the chemistry, but why the chemistry works the way it does. Amazing person even after we disagreed on a few issues.
Hard working instructor who provides a great deal of insight in why things are the way they are. She tries to not only teach the chemistry, but why the chemistry works the way it does. Amazing person even after we disagreed on a few issues.
Hard... I'm failing lecture, thank god for lab!
She will help you out if you go and ask for help. Must attend class to pass, but very easy. Tests come straight from notes in class!
I took this class Spring 09. I did terrible in the class but did good in the lab. Thankful for the lab, it brought me up to a C. Test was multiple choice. Quizes every week or every other week. Project paper over scientist or elements.
Not readily available for students to talk with.Very impersonable. Knows Chemistry but doesn't explain in in a way that is friendly to someone who has no Chmistry background.
Worst teacher ever. This reviews are completely correct. The tests are usually multiple choice which if you miss like 5 you're sos. It is also comprised of t/f which are random things that she MAY have said in class. Dispite what she says the lab is important. Go to lab. Sit in the front and make sure she knows your name. She will grade you better.
She was very helpful! She likes people who ask questions and find her office for extra help! She is somehow challenging in her tests though. In the overall, she a good teacher who knows the materials very well!!
i had this professor for chem 1 and she was aweful. NEVER take this professor, she explains things once and if you ask for help she tries to make you feel stupid. making an A with out extensive chemistry background is utterly impossible. horrible class avoid this woman at all costs.
If you want to LEARN chemistry take Ms. Douglas. She will make you learn General Chemistry 1. All of those hating on her are cry baby kids wanting to be med students, that don't go to class or lab. If you are going into engineering, physics or chemistry TAKE her. You will need what she teaches you later in your academic an professional career.
Take Ms. Douglas if you want to learn Gen. Chem. 1. If you dont want to learn it dont take her. All of these haters are cry baby med students that dont go to class, lab or do the homework. If you are an engineering, chem or physics major TAKE her. She is the best I can imagine and what she teaches you will need later in you lives.
Best chem prof hands down.. she'e VERY helpful, but u have to put in effort. THIS IS NOT A CLASS FOR LAZY STUDENTS!!!! and she makes COOKIES!!!
Mrs. Douglas is a great teacher. She is a little tough on you because she wants you to learn. If you do all the homework assignments you will pass the class with ease. Make sure you take GOOD notes...I am speaking from experience!!!
Amazing lectures, even better lab professor! I got a D in the class but that is because I didn't do the homework she assigned. The homework isn't turned in but it is the best thing to use for study material. She is tricky on her tests! She works the problems the correct way for one and then works it 3 other ways with a common error. You think you did amazing on the test then you get it back and think "What the Hell?!" She is the best teacher for General Chemistry 1, but she is tough
She is a good teacher and you will learn a lot from her. Make sure you take good notes and do the homework that she assigns. Do not skip class if you want to do well, a lot of her test questions are from her lectures. She is a fair teacher but can be a little hard, but if you study and pay attention, you will do fine in her class.
Patronizing and condescending. The class is needlessly difficult and some assignments, which take up an exorbitant amount of time are painfully worthless. Unless you are straight out of high school, and have not had the luxury of having a teacher that treats her students like adults, don't bother. Also, I don't qualify as a 'lazy pre-med student'.
Hard but totally worth it.
MUST attend and take good notes. MUST do every homework assignment and review notes. Go to her office hours and she is more than willing to help. You have to study to pass.
Simply the best at what she does. Period. Want to learn Chemistry? This is where you start. Requires academic discipline and dedicated time to study. Really knows her stuff and has a genuine passion for teaching. Intelligent & witty, you will not find a better teacher.
Great professor! Be prepared to study. If you take Douglas for general chemistry 1 you will get the education your paying for not just the 4 hour credit.
Great professor. Class is not easy, but you will learn it. Each class is packed with vital information; if you miss a single class, it could affect your grade. Very clear about what will be on exams. She goes very fast; I studied at least 3 hours per day for this class. No extra credit. You must take this class seriously and study A LOT.
Terrible human being. If you are a nursing student she will go out her way to fail you. Nursing students will feel isolated. Stay away. Very rude. If you somehow pass she will actually add surprise exams not on the syllabus to fail you. If she say no lab final practical - lying.
awesome teacher. willing to help anyone who asks, but do not expect for her to just tell you the answer. she is trying to make you think critically, most classes dont its mainly memorization. this class was awesome
One of the top Chemistry professors of all time. Does very well applying chemistry to real life. If you she writes on the board take notes. They will help you on the test. Everything she goes over, she puts on the test. NO SURPRISES. Doesn't take homework up, but I would suggest getting solution manual to study, very helpful. Would take her again.
I wanted to know why students are on opposite sides of the spectrum concerning Ms Douglass. I surveyed other classmates and her former students. I found that those who made an A or B, already had above Ave understanding of Chem. They love her, If you are weak in the basics don't think you are miracuosly going to make higher than a C.
WORST PROFESSOR AT UALR. She is ridiculous, sets the tests up for you to fail, she is condescending and rude. You can try to do the hw assigned but it didn't help me. Says she's always available to help but has an attitude if you ask her. DO NOT TAKE HER IF AT ALL POSSIBLE!
A good teacher. I learned a lot. Her test are really hard for no reason what so ever. I was a little confused about what was going to be on the test at times. I learned basically everything she talks about will be on the test. She has question on her test about scientist winning the noble prize and she makes you do a silly scientist project.
She is unnecessarily rude and hard. Even if you go to class and take notes it will not help you on the tests. Homework only helps you on quizzes. The tests are based on theory and not on actually work. DO NOT TAKE HER!! I think she honestly wants to see her students fail.
Her tests are pretty tricky, but if you study the material you can do fine. She is always willing to help, and very nice if you pay attention in class.
You will either love her or hate her. I enjoyed her class and would take her again because she makes you earn your grade, and you'll actually learn something. Pay attention in class because anything she discusseswrites down on the board is fair game for tests
Great prof. over all. Her test are hard you have to know the over all concept of stuff you can't just memorize stuff and pass. she counts off points for every little thing and she's not much help during lab at all. She does have her favorite students and its very clear. Her lectures are very clear and helpful and quizzes can be easy points.
She is the best professor for you to take if you're a Chemistry Major or Biology Major. She will prepare you for chemistry you need for later classes. If you're wanting to go to medical school don't be afraid to take the "hard" professor. Don't take her if you're a nursing major, because Chemistry combined with A&P will not be a great combo!
She seems to have something against nursing students. I was warned about that but decided to go ahead and give it a shot. I have to have a C in Chemistry, so now I'm retaking it in the summer with a different professor. Her tests and quizzes are not based on what she teaches. She seems to want to trick you into failure.
Ms. Douglas is an excellent lecturer. She takes the time to explain important concepts and makes sure that she doesn't move on if there are unanswered questions.
Douglas is extremely helpful and encouraging. I highly recommend her for incoming freshman, especially those who may not have a particularly strong background in chemistry. Douglas thoroughly covers all the basics and allows time for questions. However, she's not easy. Expect tough quizzes and tests. As a lab instructor, she's a hard grader.
This class was extremely tough. The tests are very difficult (more concept than math) but the quizzes help. You have to go to class to pass. She doesn't even enable blackboard so all notes come from her lectures and she uses a chalkboard. She makes it interesting and if you work then she's willing to help.
If you show up and take notes, you can just pass. If you actually do the homework, you can get the grade you want. She was always there to ask for help. Tests were hard and sometimes didn't cover what was in lecturer (more theory). She is very picky in lab with sig-figs and being exactly clear. Overall an expected college professor. Kind professor
One of the most challenging classes I've taken. Even if you think you're good at Chemistry, Douglas can probably prove you wrong.
Lectures are all about theory, she doesn't actually teach. You are expected to know everything already, even though this is a general chemistry course. There is no rounding of significant figures, even though the chemistry book she assigns does. She gives you a special periodic table for tests with 7 and 8 sig figs for the average atomic mass.
Attendance is not "mandatory" but it definitely is mandatory. She is very helpful, wants you to succeed, but will not do it for you. She is always available via email and office hours and is more than wiling to do whatever she can to help, but you have to ask for it. Labs were fun, material is hard, but she is very thorough.
Douglas is an amazing professor, and her teaching style shows that. She does well at making this course a "weeder" for pre-health profession students. If you are not committed, you won't pass. Countless hours were spent working and re-working problems. It's hard, but you know what is expected of you, so it's very fair.
Ms. Douglas was hands-down one of the best professors I've had. Although she is TOUGH, it ensures that you learn the material and work hard for every point. This course will definitely kick your butt if you aren't prepared to work on your own, do every homework problem, and go to her for help when you need it. Be prepared to think critically.
Class is very tough you must do the homework if you expect to pass would this class is gunna take up most of your studying time
Ms. Douglas is the hardest professor I have ever had. I took gen chem 1 twice with her. The first time I dropped it. She is hard but fair. She is very willing to help I'd you come by her office. I highly recommend her for lecture but I would not take her for lab.
Very firm, but very good. She is a great teacher, and you will learn. Don't skip class and pay attention when you take notes, because she is not playing with you. This lady is no joke! Food around and you gonna get that F.
She is a good lecture teacher. Tough in lab, won't really assist you in the best way. She is a sarcastic teacher, but knows what she is talking about.
Love her
Professor Douglas is a great professor, very informative, gives good feedback on when you ask for help, super sweet, and makes lecture fun. Though she's a hard grader, no extra credit was given throughout the course, had homework on top of homework, you will learn a lot in a short amount of time, and she pretty much expects you to retain it.
DO NOT TAKE! Toughest grader and will count off points for every thing. Explains concepts in the most difficult way possible. Went to her office after the 1st week to ask about study tips & was told I shouldn't have taken the class. We had 6 quizzes, a test and a final the last week of class. Had to watch youtube videos every night to teach myself
you will probably need therapy after taking her!!! Her teaching style is her own, she does not use the text book and even accuses the assigned text to be wrong. This is clearly a person who uses her so called awards as an ego boost. Being smart is a good thing but being a teacher requires compassion, fairness, and equality, traits she no longer has
Mrs. Douglas is a tough teacher but keep in mind that chemistry is a tough subject as well. She is very caring when it comes to wanting to see her students succeed, but her bar is set very high. Be prepared to do a lot of work outside of class as she only really touches on the concept and expects you to do the work to learn it.
I'm a single mom of 2 kids who decided to go back to school. I finished the semester with a B+. Do not let her reviews mess with your head. If you want to get a good grade in her class 1) DO THE HOMEWORK! Even if you only do the odd problems which have answers in the back of book. 2) write down everything she says and puts on the board!!! Study it!
I've studied at 5 colleges, and she ranks as one of the best teachers I've ever had. When you attend the class, you leave the clssrm understanding the material. There aren't many profs that can do that. My only gripe IMO is grading is unfairly weighted. ie On a 1 pnt Q, you can do all the math right but miss a sigfig in your ans and lose 50%
She is a tough grader and does not have patients for students who do not understand the material, forget going to her office after class and trying to get help. She makes you feel stupid. I am now retaking it elsewhere and currently have an A. She makes the material impossible for someone who is not the best at math and/or chemistry. LOOK ELSEWHERE
Ms. Douglas is genuinely wonderful. I don't recommend this course to anyone simply wanting a science credit filled, but to science majors and pre-health students. It's challenging, but you will learn far more that way. Tests are multiple choice. One of the best teachers here, and a good sense of how chemistry at UALR is like!
GO TO CLASS. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. ASK QUESTIONS. Put in lots and lots of work, but she desires to see you succeed. Always available during office hours. Super nice but expects lots of hard work for her class. Very difficult course, but very doable if you work hard.
Hard but fair
I was so scared when I read her reviews and she told the entire class on the first day that she does not recommed taking this course in the summer but I could not be anymore happy with my decision. I am no genius, average student, and I did so well. If you show that you are there to learn and want to succed then she will help you do it.
I have struggled to make an A, but it is possible. Chemistry is a very hard subject as it is, but Mrs. Douglas is tough. What she lectures is great, I got the material, but YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS. PERIOD. She is a tough grader and expects a lot, but it's doable. 1000 pts possible, 600 are exam pts. So study for exams!!! Lab is also a grade booster
This class is a waste of time and money. It doesn't matter how much you are there to learn or how hard you are working. Points off for everything and anything. No leniency, no extra credit options. Implemented in a way to fail students. She enjoys playing a game with students' lives, time, and money. $1200 down the drain to play an ugly game.
Enjoys creating stress, making students feel stupid, and forcing people to drop. Take the class anywhere else. I made A's in more advanced subjects, but the grading criteria in this class is ridiculous. Makes it so stressful you'll get cankers. The way this course is "taught" is a disgrace to the profession. Chemistry is awesome, but this class..
Took her during summer, dont unless youre prepared to devote all your time to the class. She grades hard and counts off for small errors, but she teaches the subject terrifically and I came out knowing the material instead of memorizing formulas. Dont let these reviews scare you, shes an absolutely amazing teacher.
A disgrace to the profession. Relies on a tenured position and lack of administrative oversight to ruin GPA's, scholarship opportunities, and discourage young students. Hates any major that's not chem or engineering. Egotistical, gloats in the unnecessary challenge she makes of otherwise unintimidating subject. Celebrates pushing students to drop.
Somehow gets an excellence award teaching a class where she celebrates half the class having to retake it over pointlessly excruciating grading criteria. Structures the material to cram her tests with more than you can hope to study for on purpose. Acts like its all a students fault and that theyre undisciplined and stupid. Bad teacher.
The professor enjoys destroying grades over minor details. This class is garbage. Get the credit somewhere you can actually learn it without catering to someone's need to exert their power at your expense. An unbelievable waste of time.
If you're not a Chem major good luck with this class. Assigns about 50 homework problems a night far more complicated than anything you'll do in class but thinks it's okay bc she doesn't grade any of them. Exams and quizzes are the only points you get but they're filled with trick questions and zero leniency, I was stuck taking her but try not to.
She's retiring soon and I wish I was lucky enough to need this class after then. Her tests are full of trick questions, she likes to make it hard. She gets off to deducting points for literally anything she can. Like if it's wrong by one decimal place, it's wrong and you get zero credit. Homework isn't for a grade but you better practice somehow.
Class is a freshman level course taught like a senior level course, many students are not chem majors yet is taught like they are. Course is extremely difficult due to the nature of grading. Test questions are made to trick you not use any skill. She encourages students to drop and acts like the students are the problem.
Douglas is a nice person, not so nice professor. If you miss lecture, you will not do well in this class. If you want to do well on the test, pay attention to details during lecture and do your homework. Don't recommend this course unless you need to take it for your major.
