Best math teacher I've had at USF! She cares about her students, is helpful, intelligent and funny. Overall she is a great teacher.
Great teacher! She explains her work thoroughly and LOVES her job. Had her for 8am class and every day she was enthusiastic and happy to be there. She knows that most people just want the credit so she doesnt make her course extremely difficult. Offers extra credit sometimes and drops low test grades. Would take again.
Dr. Hernandez is an amazing teacher. She expects you to participate and to ask questions so, sit in the front, put your phone away, act like you want to learn and she'll help you tremendously.
Great teacher. The tests are straightforward- exactly what you see on the lectures and the HW. No surprise material. Very helpful. Knows her stuff. Whenever possible, she ends class early for any individual help you might need.
Hernandez was one of my favorite professors. She genuinely cares about each and everyone of her students. Business Calc is a difficult class, but Hernandez makes it easy to be successful. She offers a lot of extra credit through smart lab, drops your lowest grade and is awesome in office hours. I ended up failing 2 exams but getting an A+ overall.
The tests and homework she gives are in the smart lab, pretty direct, but you have to clearly get calc. If you're not a math person, this class can be rough ! She knows her stuff but doesn't give the student the chance to figure it out on there own with her help, you most likely will just wait for her clarification. Also she talks VERY FAST!
Loved as a teacher. Does go a bit fast but just raise your hand & ask her to slow down/clarify. LOVES her job. Very accessible. PLEASE go to her if you're struggling. Offers EC through SmartLab. Does clicker Qs. SmartLab tests are online hw based, written tests based exactly on her practice exams. GO TO REVIEWS. DO HW ON TIME. Ended with 103%
She was an awesome Calculus teacher, she told you exactly what you needed to study for the test. She was also really funny and made math lectures enjoyable.
Great professor and passionate about what she is teaching
Great prof with a quirky, bubbly personality. Best math prof I've ever had. Do the MML HW. All of it, seriously, it helps. Exams are EXACTLY like the review, just different numbers. Literally just do the review and there is no way you can get less than an A. As on every exam and I kinda suck at math. Oh, there's a lab that you should prob go to.
Amazing teacher and her lectures are easy to understand. A lot of homework tough. Attendance is not mandatory but the points will help you a lot.
She is a great math teacher, which is important to have. She is very clear when explaining concepts and posts all her notes online. Attendance is sort of mandatory because clicker questions are a grade.
She is pretty good at explaining topics however she rushes through the lectures and is a little scattered. There is a lot of homework assignments and a quiz every week. The grading criteria is clear and she reviews what will be on the tests. However, I wouldn't take her again.
Have to attend lecture for clicker points, attend smart lab, quite a bit of homework, weekly quizzes. Its a lot.
Prof. Herdandez was amazing. She understands that Calculus isn't the easiest so she makes it very simple. She explains things very well although she can speak a little fast. You can always ask her to slow down and repeat . Online hw on WebAssign. HW makes or breaks grade. Attendance isn't mandatory but is suggested. Drops 2 lowest quizzes & HW
Hernandez was my favorite prof this semester. She is funny, smart and helpful!
Fantastic!!!
Dr. Hernandez was one of the best math instructors I've ever had! I really struggle with math, so a good professor is really important for me. Dr. Hernandez is extremely good at explaining the topics and giving you help if you need it! She genuinely wants you to learn and understand the material and makes sure you're never blindsided on exams.
She is an excellent teacher! She is great at explaining things. She is kind and willing to help you. I would definetly recommend her.
My fav math teacher at USF. I struggle with math and she made the concepts so easy to understand. Go to class every day for clicker points and answers to the homework. attendance is not mandatory but she makes class so fun that you should go anyway.
Loved Professor Hernandez! I was intimidated by Calculus but she made it easy to understand. Go to every class and you won't have a problem.
The best Prof. out there, she wants you to learn, and shows you how to succeed in a tough subject. One of the Best.
Dr. Hernandez-Viera is amazing. The class isn't strictly organized, she definitely moved homework and quiz dates around. She responds well to you if you sit in the front, show up, participate and visit her office hours. You definitely have to work hard to do well, especially on tests, but she gives you all the info you need in lecture.
She is an absolutely delightful person and a truly incredible professor. She makes lecture so interesting you can't help but pay attention. She's fantastic especially if you don't have a background in calculus, she explains things incredibly well and is accessible out of class to clarify anything. Quizzes weekly but they're not too hard.
Hernandez is a great person and is very organized. She explained things well and definitely made the class easier. The quizzes each Wednesday are kind of difficult and she doesn't drop them at the end even if she says she will, but it's okay. Webassign is used for homework. She gives extra credit quizzes before each test and is easy to talk to
She is amazing. Tells you exactly what will be on the exam. One of the best math professors I've had. The quizzes are hard but she gives a lot of extra credit to balance it out
She is one of the best professors ever she cares about the class and the students and she makes the class easier to handle because she enjoys it the class isn't hard at all it was my easiest class in that whole semester there are a lot of homeworks and some are hard but quizzes and tests are exactly what she says they'll be a lot of extra credit
Amazing professor! She explains math very clearly and takes time to answer questions. There are quizzes and homework every week and the tests are graded fairly.
Energetic and real, she actually wants people to pass. Always double checks with students to see if she is moving too fast or they dont understand before going on.
I love her! She gives great notes. Her energy keeps class pretty entertaining, not monotone at all. Fair homework load, enough to give you a decent grasp on the material but isnt overwhelming. The textbook is helpful as a source of practice problems for studying. Attendance is crucial.
very fair, explains well quizzes every week, homework are easy and she drops the lowest grade
Homework assignments (textbook & Matlab) could be done individually or in groups of 2-3. Two exams, an optional final (lowest grade dropped). MATLAB/Latex final presentation (in groups). Attendance wasn't mandatory but she started giving out extra credit problems if you went to class. She is so funny and nice! Wish I could take her again.
Amazing Professor! Definitely recommend taking her for Calc 1! She is very good at explaining the topic and is energetic
She's an amazing professor and is really caring about her students. I had health issues this semester and ended up hospitalized and she worked the best she could to help me get back on course after. She is very straight forward and wants you to succeed.
By far one of the most exceptional instructors I have ever had the pleasure of taking. She makes fantastic notes in class and even publishes them to canvas for later review. Her exams are exactly what you're taught and they're not tricky if you study. If you need the best for Calc I, look no further.
Dr. Hernandez-Viera is truly one of the best and funniest professors at USF. She actually made Calculus I a fun class, which in my opinion is no small task. She gives in-class quizzes, but never fails to post a review. All class notes are uploaded and exam reviews are always provided along with detailed solutions. You won't regret choosing her!
Professor Hernandez is definitely one of the best professors at USF. She made calc super easy to understand, and she explains the material well. Just do the homework and attend lectures and you should get good grades on the exams.
Dr. H has hands down been the best math teacher I've ever had. I was genuinely able to understand calculus which I never thought I would ever be able to do. I 100% advise everyone to attend her office hours before the exams because she is SO HELPFUL and because of this I passed the exams.
Loved this professor so much. The class was clearly laid out and is a difficult course. Dont expect it to be easy. Homework, quizzes, clicker points, exams, etc are all fair. Exams: long, fair questions, partial credit given. Dont give up after the first one. Its hard but doable. Her lectures made so much sense to me and shes always available.
I took her Online (during covid), she had no live lectures or reviews because "it's not her style". Be prepared to work on her schedule she is not understanding. She does not reply to email and when she does, she's rude. Not only is she an awful professor she's just a mean person.
Awesome teacher, really enjoyed her class. She is fun and her lectures were short and to the point. The class was fully online, but she had live office hours to help with any specific problems.
Dr. H was amazing! She always answered her emails within 24 hours and was extremely helpful during assigned office hours. Class consists of 3 exams plus a final, 6 quizzes, 6 worksheet assignments, and LOTS of webassign homework. Make sure to attend office hours and watch her video lectures in order to understand the material.
Considering it was calculus, Professor Hernandez really made it a breeze. Her lectures are super clear and give a lot of examples, she helps a lot in her office hours, and there was a significant amount of extra credit.
I had Dr. H online but she was amazing. She pre-recorded lectures and held office hours during class time instead to clarify anything we were confused about. There were weekly quizzes and lectures and lots of WebAssign but if you actually do the work and practice problems she gives you for tests, you should be fine. They are usually very similar.
Good lectures and will always help you understand if you have questions. But, the quizzes are 10x easier than the tests so it's hard to gauge where you are.
She's an amazing person, take her without a 2nd thought. There's a lot of extra credit during exams; exams, quizzes are similar to practice exams. Her lectures are very helpful. If you put in a little effort, I'm sure you will pass this class with an A. She was my professor when I took calc 1 for the 2nd time, it is easier to do well in her class.
It is clear that Professor Hernandez has a strong passion for teaching mathematics. This is Calculus 1 and it can be challenging for some, but Prof. Hernandez provides great explanations, elaboration, and addition help if needed. I am happy to say I will take her again next semester, and consider yourself lucky if you can get her as your professor!
Do not take this prof. He gave no extra credit and his test is super hard. He is accessible outside of class but his notes are very bad and hard to follow. He also gave a few quizizes which is as hard as a test
It is obvious the Dr. H loves to teach math. Pre-recorded lectures that you watch before the class time and join the online discussion during class if you have questions. Weekly quizzes and a lot of Webassign. Always available to answer questions and even held office hours the nights before tests. Take HER if you can!
Awesome professor. She will make you work for your grades.
Have heard that calc2 is difficult but the way she taught made it very easy to understand. We were encouraged to ask questions and informed before hand the exact test structure of each exam. We had 4 exams and one was dropped including the final. She also drops a few quizzes and some homeworks by the end of the semester. Very good professor.
I had Dr. Hernandez for Calc 1 and 2. I am taking Calc 3 now and I really miss her. She cares about her students and is always available to answer questions even the night before the test. Calc 2 is supposed to be the hardest of the 3 classes but she did a great job explaining concepts in a way that we could understand them. She is the best!
Calc 2 tends to be a difficult class for many, but professor H teaches it well. You have to do notes before coming to class, but they are not too difficult and should not take too long. During class times, she goes over the examples in the notes and is open to all questions. She is always accessible after school and really cares about her students.
She is amazing, she is super clear about her expectations and she is always there to help you out. She stays all night on teams before exams for any questions. Gives clear reviews and uses the same types of problems from the book/quizzes on exams. Drops a lot of Hws/quizzes/1 exam. Each exam has a 10-point curve. weekly quizzes can be annoying tho
She is the way to go! Best math professor by far that I have EVER taken. She is funny, makes lectures enjoyable, and makes calculus look extremely easy. The grading is exams, quizzes, lecture quizzes, and hw. She takes attendance through that. Exams are graded in the best way possible, impossible to not pass. Just work hard enough!
I took Calc 2 over the summer and was on the verge of failing, but she works with you and sees eye to eye. I passed the class (from a 56 to a 75) and her lectures were terrific. She knows what she's doing and is super easy to talk to if you have any questions. Highly recommend taking her for calculus.
I had Ms. Viera for Calc 1 and Calc 2, she is one of those teachers that truly care about her students. She is the only reason as to why I passed these classes and she was very helpful and funny as well. Also dont hesitate to go to office hours sometimes she gives out good stuff to know before tests which helps out a lot
Great professor, she explains the concepts will and gives good resources for the test. Advice: GO TO OFFICE HOURS, dont wait a day before the exam. Hw isnt bad, watch the lecture bf class and do worksheets in class. Its pop quizzes but based on the HW. She sets her expectations high and believes in her students. Loved her and easy to talk too.
Dr. H is the best! Obviously calc is one of those classes where you have to pay attention, but she makes it interesting in her lectures and takes the time to make sure we really understand the concepts and are not just memorizing. There's a lot of work but it's doable and helps in your understanding of the topics.
Amazing teacher who clearly understands how her students learn and what works best. She's a clear communicator and is very approachable. The course doesn't prepare you well for the tests. You 100% need to spend time outside of class practicing and prepping to walk away with a decent grade. Hard, but I couldn't imagine having any other teacher.
Grades tests tough. Says class is flipped where lectures are online and practice is in class, but ends up covering the same material in class. Would be pointless to attend lectures if it wasn't for the pointless in-class assignments. Problems on tests are 10x harder than anything covered in class. My biggest regret so far is taking her class.
great teacher, just a fair bit of homework (thats a good thing in college)
One of the best professors I have ever had! Lectures can be fast-paced, but she makes it fun. Posts the notes after class. Homework is difficult at times but she gives you a whole week to complete it. Provides plenty of resources to help you pass the exams (practice questions, textbook questions, etc.). Quizzes weekly. She makes calculus fun!
She was the best professor ever! She made calculus super easy and I recommend taking her!
Dr. H-V is such a great professor. She made Calculus bearable and fun. She gives extra credit in tests and always has practice problems and a test available for studying. When the homework gets hard, she goes through them in class and she is available to help her students outside of class. I would take her for every math class if I could!
Dr. H-V is one of my favorite profesors. She is so thorough, helpful, and funny. I took her for Calc II in six weeks and it was great! You are graded by multiple things, tests have extra credit and a portion of grades gets dropped. Probably still go to class as activities and quizzes are given.
She is the best math professor that I have taken a class with at USF. She explains the course content very well and is very clear with what she expects you to be able to do on exams.
took this class in 6 weeks and it was very time consuming but she made it clear what was expected of us as well as your lowest exam score can be replaced if you take the final. very understanding and reachable outside of class as well as fun lectures, definitely would take her again if i could
Out of all calc 2 professors she is the best no question about it. She is truly passionate about math. This class is overall a really hard class so if you want to excel you have to do extra practice and do the reviews she gives from the textbook and go to her office hours. She also gives a quiz every friday, no extra credit, no curve on test.
Awful. She is mean and not considerate at all. She easily gets frustrated and does not care
Not an easy A. You have to actually go to class and do the work but she provides a lot of resources. Go to office hours and, if you can't, send her an email. We met on Teams more than once and she was always helpful. I can't imagine passing this class without her help.
Extremely caring, not too many Professors are caring nowadays, she will help you beyond mesure if you ask her to. Unfortunately, she does not teach 3s and 4s classes for Statistic major otherwise I would take her again. She was very helpful all the time. I definitely recommend her. Very knowledgeable of the topic and very well explained.
One of the best professors at USF. She actually cares about her students succeeding and will do just about everything she can to help you. She's knowledgeable, witty, and sarcastic which makes going to class fun. Highly recommend!
TAKE HER! She is not a great teacher, but in college, no Calc professor is great... She is the best one out there. Just make sure you go to class and complete all the activities and watch the explanation videos, these things will help a lot. I would take her for all Calcs if it was possible.
100% take her. The best calc professor at this school. Especially for calc2 she was great & explained all concepts well. Quiz every Friday (except after tests), the inclass activities were very helpful in solidifying understanding of the material, u can ask her questions and she is ready/happy to help. Easily get a B in the class. 10/10 professor.
as a certified math hater, I genuinely did not hate this class. lacking in foundational algebra, I was expecting battle scars, however this class was nice. There is a lot of online hw, but the practice exams are beautifully made, making it easy to see what needs to be studied. was a flip class so we had worksheets, the forced practice also helped.
Best professor I've ever had. An amazing person too, she's funny and teaches so well. I had an AWFUL calc 1 prof, so my foundation was flawed. The material is very difficult but she helps you understand and wants all her students to learn. I wish I had her for future classes. Oh and she's head of the UG Calc dept.
I had Hernandez for calculus 2 in the spring of 2024. She was amazing. She does in-class activities during the class period and has you watch her lecture videos on youtube before you attend class, so its easy to fall behind but it was never an issue for me. She answers your questions super fast on email. Currently taking calc iii and i miss her.
I took both Calc I (Spring 2024, A+) and II (Summer 2024, A) with Dr. Hernández-Viera. She's super caring and fun to talk to; she genuinely cares about you and wants you to succeed. I found the courses to be relatively easy due to how well she prepares you for them + the 10 points added to each exam. She's one of those professors you'll truly miss.
Shes amazing and wonderful. She has clear expectations and tests were not extremely hard. Theres HW for every section and 4 tests total
she is definitely the best out there. super kind and so helpful. calc 1 can be tough for some but she makes it SUPER easy to understand. there were quizzes every tuesday but the questions were literally the notes with different numbers. she tells u exactly what she expects on tests. its super easy to get a 90 if you put in some effort.
She overall was the best Calc II professor I have taken. She was able to answer questions in and out of class. We did have class online a few times throughout the semester. Was a little upset that we did not really learn half of the last chapter in class but online with a different professors videos. Definitely have to study for this class!
Absolutely love her, so much partial credit on tests there is no need to worry, super funny and caring, just go to her lectures! Only 1-2 short 5-15 problem homework assignments each week.
Best calc teacher ever. Amazing! Offers extra credit. Lectures are easy to understand. Tests are very similar to practice tests. Homework on Cengage due 2 times a week and 1 Quiz per week, but they are so helpful. Sometimes she did in class activities. All tests had 10 extra points. 3 tests and 1 final.
Best math professor I have ever had! She explains the concepts clearly and passionately. Go to class because you'll be lost otherwise, and she sometimes does in-class activities. The lectures and practice tests are almost identical to the exams. Very funny and friendly!
Best calc teacher I've ever had. Calc II is hard but she is so funny and her lectures are so good -- you never have to look at the textbook if you just go to class. Exams are very straightforward and similar to practice exams she gives. You have to show up because she does in class assignments but they are also very useful.
honestly the best math professor ive had and she explains stuff very clearly, that even if you suck at calc you'll be able to do good
Clear teaching. Took her for calc 1 and 2. Had to drop since the class is tough and health reasons. Lots of hw, quizzes every friday, random in class assignments so attend class. Pretty sweet mostly. Tough subject so devote lots of time and use office hours please. Needed extensions and she didnt trust me fully so show clear proof.
Amazing professor she deserves a 5/5. If you are nervous or scared to take calc 1, take her! I ended her class with a 102% and I'm awful at math. Go to lecture listen take notes and go to her final review, the practice tests are very similar she wants u to excel in this class! 10 to 15 point of extra credit on each exam. Shes approachable and cares
Honestly, I have nothing but good to say about professor Hernandez Viera. She's a good teacher and keeps the lectures going fast but engaging. Definitely don't skip them, and make sure to study for the weekly quizzes. Exams are very double, even for calc 2. Ended the class with 103% so save to say not a hard A. Would definitely recommend her.
Dr Hernandez- Viera is a godsend. She is the person you want to take if you struggle in math. I have struggled with calc and was dreading retaking this class. But she made this class mangeable and she did not go crazy on concepts. If you're looking for a professor that can help get the calc pre-requisite done for health professional school take her
Professor has an interesting teaching style while her personality is contagious and keeps your attention she brushes over core academic support seems a little unorganized and masked in grace wrote "good luck in future" on exam instead of simply just providing constructive feedback
I will be the first to admit that I am a poor student in math. I found that her lecture style did not help me at all; despite attending every lecture, I had to learn the information on my own after class. Perhaps my biggest issue is that there was little extra credit, and the only test drop requires you to score well on the final
If you are considering taking this class, DO NOT. I am so serious, you will regret it. She does not care about her students and is very passive aggressive. She drops no exams, there is no extra credit, she drops no homework, and she is disorganized.
Viera's grade scale doesn't work in your favor. Her teaching is a bit all over the place and doesn't set clear expectations for her exams. Don't recommend her if you struggle with any type of math; She teaches it like its common sense. No drops (only 20% of ICAs); final replaces lowest. The only class I regret taking. Ever. Just take Sanders.
had her for calc 1 and now for calc 3. her tests and quizzes are straightfoward and are practically the notes she gives, just study for them. shes very helpful in and outside of class. if u put some sort of effort into the class you should easily get a B+.
Professor Marian Hernandez-Viera is excellent. This was my second time taking calculus, and her support, clarity, and resources are unmatched. Low ratings are highly unfair, she provides everything needed to succeed. They are just upset cause they simply don't understand calculus. I highly recommend her to anyone taking life science calculus.
When I took AP Calculus AB as a senior in high school, I never once got an A on an exam. Since taking this course, I so far have managed to get an A on every exam. This professor is so sweet and helpful. If you don't understand her lectures in person, watch her youtube videos from 2020 (linked on Canvas) they make SO much sense. Don't take Sanders.
This is the best math prof. The negative reviews in a row are students upset with another section misprinting the final and having it online (wasn't supposed to happen), and her still giving us one. She teaches the content in depth and I have received high As on every test strictly from her lectures and extra credit is built into tests (110/100)
(posting from having taken her class a year ago) I don't think I've ever seen a professor for any other math class I've taken top her performance. Genuinely one of the best professors on campus. Perfect lectures, I understood everything during them- I've never studied the content AHEAD of lectures but I did for her. That's just how amazing she is.
