This class was not as bad as I swore it would be. I mean it was not a breeze but she does not try to trick you or ask too much of you for her tests. They are all straigh foward but do require studying. She makes it really easy to do well in her class plus she will help you whever you need it.
Great woman. Tests are easy if you know your material. If you understand your notes then you will do fine. Her tests are very cut and dry, she does not try to trick you. She is willing to help you anytime! definatley pick her as your spanish teacher!!!!!!
Great professor! Her test are very easy...just study the chapter its on and you'll be fine. Do your homework and remember to turn in the assignments that is due on the day of the test. She doesn't grade hard. She gives extra credit and she's very laid back. I hope I get to take one of her classes again. She's very understanding also.
Her class was a piece of cake. She has you do easy projects and tests are only like 30% of your grade. Her class is both interesting and easy. Plus she is very lenient when it comes to grades.
This class was great! She does take attendance, but the tests and quizzes are really easy as long as you go to class and do the homework. She tries to make it as fun and easy as possible. GREAT class even for non-Spanish majors!!
Profe Jara is great! Don't be afraid to "get it wrong"--she doesn't make you feel stupid when you do. She tends to speak only in Spanish quite a lot (which for a 101 course can be intimidating) but it's the best way to learn! Go in with a positive attitude, participate in class, and you'll do great! Her tests are easy if you study the material!
She is the easiest Spanish teacher ever! She makes everything so easy to understand, always positive and trying to help, gives you a study guide before every test that tells you everything that will be on the test! She has a great personality too and makes everything weigh equally in your grade so it doesnt hurt you much. I recommend her!!!!!
Great teacher, definitely take her. she loves doing new things in the classroom and trying new things. she has a great attitude and will never ridicule you for getting something wrong. she is always available to help. before i took her class i hated spanish and now i like it.
Not a good class to take for Spanish 101, way to much online work that is hard to keep up with. Sweet teacher and loves to teach. As long as you study and complete everything you should do fine. but im warning you, there is alot of "busy" work that could hurt you if you forget to do it
I had Jara for Spanish 120 as well as 201. She does give a lot of online assignments, but as long as you keep up with them her class is so easy. You can always e-mail her or go see her before something is due and she will correct everything for you. She is super sweet, and really cares about her students!
despite her being an awesome sweet lady. She sucks at being a college teacher. She treated us like we were in high school, giving us busy work and what not. A lot of her class is online which is awesome. If you want an easy class, dont take Jara. If you want to earn your A, take her
Professor is very kind, but there are so many extra and out-of-class activities that it's really hard to keep up with everything AND study the basics for SPN 101. This is the most difficult and time-consuming class I've had.
She really does care about her students, but, she's also really tough. She has a lot of expectations from you, and there is a lot of online work that needs to be done. Still, if you know the Spanish, and you do the work, she'll work with you through and through.
She is a great professor and gives you many opportunities to bring your grade up. She is very nice during the interviews (midterm and final) and if you go to class every time you'll never have to study. (if you like Spanish)
Very nice lady. Her class is tough though. She gives a lot of online work and expects you to always check the online calendar for homework. See takes attendance every once in awhile. If you don't mind the work... take her class!
If you take her then you need to check your online calendar every night. She does not announce when there is online homework posted, she expects you to check that. This hurt my grade the most. Her tests were pretty difficult. Other than that she is a pretty nice lady.
WONDERFUL PROFESSOR! Prof. Jara loves her job, is a wonderful teacher, and knows her stuff! Must stay on top of things though! There is Extra Credit. Only 2 written tests, but lots of little projects throughout the term, which was sort of annoying. If you like Spanish and want to get better, TAKE HER! :)
She is a very nice lady, and is very caring about her students. Freshman Seminar is a joke, but I'm sure her other classes are more interesting.
So sweet! And very helpful. Freshman seminar is useless, but she taught us a lot! It's evident that she really cares about her students and is really encouraging. Great prof.
Her class was sort of hard for me. She has a ton of projects for you to do which gets hard to keep up with. Be sure to read the syllabus and remember everything you have to do! I loved the class...just hated all the extra work outside of class
Great professor. She is friendly and helpful. Encourages participation in class. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. I hope I have her again for another class!
Profe Jara is fantastic! Sure, the material is not that easy, but she is such a sweet lady and is very helpful. If you come to class and pay attention, you learn the language. Follow her advice, listen to spanish music, and do some extra credit. Definitely an awesome teacher!
Jara is a very sweet lady who loves to help students understand spanish. She will spend as much time as you need going over information until you understand it. He tests are pretty easy if you have taken spanish before. Nice person and a good teacher.
I hated Spanish before, and I actually somewhat enjoyed this class. She uses class activities which help you learn a lot. She's always willing to help you if you need it and is a fairly easy grader.
EXTREMELY HELPFUL, but class itself is quite difficult just because of the level of Spanish. She will do everything in her power to make sure you get the grade you deserve, in a good way. Midterm is difficult with a written essay and interview with her. Tough class, but if you have to take it, take it with Jara.
Jara is the best. i suck at spanish and im taking 120 again for grade replacement, so its safe to say that i dread spanish class. but with jara its not that bad going to class cus shes mad cool and wants to help everyone learn and wants to have fun too. real down to earth lady, good person to know too if you wanna study abroad.
Worst class I have ever taken. It was so easy I didn't know what to do with myself. Never studied once and got over 100 on every test. Despite this however, my final grade wasn't even a B.
Profe Jara is the BEST! She's extremely helpful and always wanted to make sure her students were learning. If you are interested in Spanish and want to take lots of classes take her for 202 or beginning levels. Easy A if you work hard.
very cool teacher&genuinely interested in education. the best part about her is that she's a native Spanish speaker making her teaching approach much more fluid and easy to comprehend. i've ALWAYS struggled with Spanish but this class made me decide to minor in it! very fun teacher who balances bookwork&fun. if youre struggling, TAKE HER CLASS.
Profe Jara makes learning fun and easy. She does lots of fun and useful activities in class. The homework can be challenging but it is very helpful in preparing you for the test. She is very helpful and understanding. She is by far my favorite Professor I have had so far at UNCW!
She is a pretty easy teacher with many oppurtunities to get extra credit and help your grade; however, she is not very clear on assignments and never explains anything in English. She counts off for participation but tries to help.
She's a great professor. Easy A. SOOO MANY EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES!
She is a sweet lady but she is definitely the worst spanish teacher I've ever had! Her in class assignments aren't very helpful. I feel like I am completely teaching myself all of the material. I made a low A because I worked my butt off but it was NOT easy! I love spanish but hated this class.
LOVE JARA! Sweetest lady and a great teacher! Hadn't taken spanish since high school but I picked it right back up because of her. HW is tedious but its the same for all 202 students so its not her. I definitely recommend her!
She is so sweet! Spanish is never going to be an easy class regardless of which professor you have, but she's a very easy grader. I truly didn't learn anything in the class and still got an A. There's tons of busy-work assignments which is kind of a pain, but I think that's the same with all Spanish classes. I'd definitely recommend her!!
Mrs. Jara expects you to know Spanish very well before taking the class. The entire class is taught in Spanish. If you don't understand something and ask for help, she will not help you until you ask your question in Spanish. Not very helpful and very difficult.
Absolutely my favorite professor! She is incredibly cute and fun as a person, but also organized and clear as a professor. She genuinely cares about her students- take her if you have the chance! The grades are distributed among a lot of assignments, meaning you can mess up now and then and you'll be fine.
Good: she give MANY small assignments- online homework, group skits, book work, quizes, tests, exams, & oral exams. Give you multiple chances to raise your grade up by having lots of assignments. Bad: She can be confusing in explaining things, will have to teach yourself most things, played favorites in my class- dont get on her bad side!
If you care about Spanish whatsoever, you can do very well in Profe Jara's classes. Participate, study outside of class, and ask questions if you don't understand and you will come out with an A. She gives many, many extra credit opportunities and is generally very clear about her expectations. Best 201202 professor in my opinion! Take her!!
This class was so fun and Profe Jara is incredible. I hated spanish in high school and I ended up loving this class. Small assignments throughout the semester, like online homework, quizzes, group projects and a personal presentation. She gives you the opportunity to have 6% extra credit. Go to the tutoring center though, it clears things up.
I ended up with an A- in this class and I don't think I should have even passed - not that I'm complaining. Jara does assign a lot of work, but those little assignments will add up and really help you out in terms of your final grade. Midterm+final are a written test and oral interview. Scary, but very simple. She gives you the questions to study.
Profe Jara was an awesome professor! She is very clear as to what she expects on tests and quizzes, she is very good at explaining and her tests are exact examples of what she gives in class. The online homework assignments on Vista Higher Learning are lengthy, but very helpful and not too difficult. She gives SO MANY extra credit assignments too!
She grades easily on most things. If you are a shy person, you're going to get a bad grade on participation. I understand that speaking the language is necessary, but there should be a better way of grading participation than just merely basing it off of who volunteers the most in class. This method of grading just teaches the extrovert ideal.
Professor Sara is what it means to be a great professor at a University! Se actually cares about her students and will do everything she can to be of service, just know to not take her kindness for weakness! Attend, be respectful, and do the (easy) assignments and you will get that A you strive for. Best of Luck!
Profe. Jara is by far one of the best Spanish teachers I've had through both high school and college. She explains every concept very simply and thoroughly and goes to every extent possible to help you out. She provides lots of extra credit opportunities and as long as you show up to class and keep up with the online assignments you can succeed.
Sweet professor that is very caring. Offers a lot of extra credit- take advantage of it because need it by the end. Easy A if you come to class and participate. Online homework is weighted heavily so make sure you complete it!
Profe Jara is a very nice professor. She gives out lots of opportunities for extra credit and plays fun review games with you before exams which typically come along with extra credit points. You need to participate though because you are graded on that and definitely can't miss more than 3 classes. You aren't graded too hard and class is fun.
Profe Jara makes SPN 201 easy and makes the grammar understandable. She offers a ton of extra credit (up to 5 points added to your final grade) so as long as you put in the work and participate, you'll get a good grade.
The class is easy up until the final. She grades the oral and written finals extremely hard. I had an A before the exams and I now have a B-. If you are not fluent in spanish, she will give you a failing grade on the oral exam. Her expectations are way too high for people who don't speak spanish.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Professor expects you to know Spanish fluently, and if not you will not pass the final exams. The work for this class is easy, but the tests are extremely hard.
Her dates on the course syllabus were never right, yet she expected you to be prepared. She was rude, and never had the students best interest at hand.
Take her!! You can get up to 5 extra credit points on your final grade and there's so many assignments so it is hard to do poorly in her class. She loves the language and really cares about her students
Profe Jara wants her students to learn Spanish, if you want to learn--take her! She is so sweet and is one of the few professors who is a native Spanish speaker, but also knows fluent english. She is there to help you and wants all of her students to do well! My favorite Spanish professor I have had in my major.
Terrible professor! Expects you to be fluent, very harsh exam grader and spams your email with her "study aboard" program (Does she get commission or something lol)
Profe Jara was very nice, caring and understanding. Participation is a big part of class and if you don't normally raise your hand, she will call on you anyway, but don't worry she will help you if you are confused. There are some good extra credit opportunities too that you can add to your grade. Good class if you took Spanish in high school.
Professor Jara is a sweet and caring person. She is always willing to help you out. However I would only advise taking her if you are genuinely interested in Spanish. She wants you to actually learn and use the material. There is a lot of homework but she gives two weeks or so to complete it. She is a harsh grader on exams but very helpful.
AMAZING professor. Profe Jara is super caring and you can tell she wants her students to learn. She provides up to 5 extra credit points (on the overall final grade) throughout the semester. She is so sweet and I looked forward coming to this class everyday. You also do group skits and lots of partner work, so it is a very socially involved class.
I LOVE HER SO MUCH! always responds to emails, she really wants you to pass and understand the material. shes so helpful and understanding. not that much work, but she makes the class fun
Professor Jara is a very nice lady and a good professor. Her class is super simple, just do the work and show up to class. She is understanding and emails you back. I recommend
I took this class fall semester of 2020. I really enjoyed Prof Jara. I am not a big fan of Spanish in general, but she made the class much better. She gave a TON of extra credit assignments, at least in my online format. Tests don't make up a lot for much of the overall grade, it is mostly assignments. She is also very understanding and sweet.
Prof Jara is amazing! She is very understanding that learning Spanish is difficult and frustrating at times, and always helps in any way she can. Her canvas page is so easy to navigate and it helps you never miss an assignment. Tests don't make up a big portion of the grade and they aren't easy, but you wont be struggling if you pay attention.
Her due dates always changed without her telling anyone. She also has a lot of typos in her Spanish quizzes and assignments. She gives unnecessary assignments and marks points off your assignments which don't reflect what her comments say.
This was by far one of the hardest classes I had that semester. Not understanding to the pandemic we are in and the effect it has on students. Test almost every week and she expects 8+ hrs a week dedicated to her class which is completely unreasonable for a 15+ credit hour student. Two group project weighted high and unreasonable if its online.
By far the worst class I've ever taken. There is a ridiculous amount of coursework and expects an insane amount of hours each week. All of her assignments seemed like "busy work" to me. I also found her to be quite rude. If you aren't fluent I recommend you find another professor.
she gave a lot of extra credit opportunities. you can tell she really cares about her students. there is a lot of busy work on vhl due often. she always gave good feedback and reasoning for your grade.
Sweet professor but heavy course load. This class comes with LOTS of busy work & homework every day. I came into this class knowing no Spanish & passed with a 102. My biggest piece of advice is to use every EC opportunity, it can change your letter grade. Includes VHL homework, quizzes, video practice questions, videos, group projects, & tests.
Professor Jara is a great teacher but... a lot of homework especially having 5 other classes. Make sure you check the course calendar that she provides or else you will miss assignments. I usually look at my canvas calendar so I can see my due assignments, but I missed one of her's because it wasn't on my to-do list or calendar on canvas.
Professor Jara's class is not the hardest if you really put time towards her class each week. You have homework almost everyday and a test almost every week. My classmates and I are not doing horrible in her class because we get our work done but if you do not take the class seriously you will struggle.
She is really nice, but she gives way too much work. Her work is just busy work and very time-consuming. It is relatively easy but it's just annoying. She grades a little harder than most but if you try, you will do good. There are worse teachers, but she isn't the best.
I had professor Jara for a zoom Spanish class. Our attendance and participation matter but if you pay attention and stay on top of homework you will do good in class. She has so many extra credit opportunities which was the difference between a B or an A in the class for me. If I needed more Spanish classes I would take her again!
Not very involved with students. So much homework. Not very good with guidance which I struggled with as a first semester freshman who had no idea what they were doing.
A lot of homework, which wouldn't be a problem if she explained the contents of the homework. She gives a lot of in-class activities that don't have a relation to what we're studying and don't explain grammar. I was expecting to learn more about the structure of the language so I was very disappointed.
Profe. Jara is an incredibly kind person and makes Spanish less painful to learn. She is not a tough grader, few if any tests, and lots of extra credit. She is flexible and individualizes class so each student can get the most out of it regardless of their level. Be prepared for TONS of VHL homework though, and you better not be shy!
Love Profe Jara, super nice and understanding. You can tell she loves teaching. Great response time and always willing to help.
Take her if you can! She was super nice and understanding and not a harsh grader whatsoever. I took her class on zoom which you do have to actually turn on your camera and participate since she will call on you. Lots of homework on VHL and projects but as long as you get it all done and do the extra credit you will get a super high A.
Overrall very sweet. Gives a ton of homework and will ask you to participate at least twice a class. Not for those with social anxiety. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. Speaks completely in Spanish at all times. Gives candy on holidays. Many projects and presentations as well. Very passionate but tough class. Keep up, and you are good.
She is clear with expectations. there are extra credit opportunities. she grades participation and attendance. she will call on you in class and you will have to work and discuss with your classmates. she is very helpful and cares about students
do the portales work and show up to class and you will pass
Professor Jara is awesome and the best Spanish professor I've had. She teaches all of her lectures in fluent Spanish, and encourages other students to do the same. She offers extra credit and will not leave you behind if you try - even if you aren't the best at the language.
She seems like a genuinely nice person and would be great for someone wanting to minor in Spanish, but she is SO work heavy for a course that I only needed to graduate. SO much work for no reason if you are taking this as a requirement, I would avoid at all costs
I would avoid her at all costs, not only is it impossible to find anything in her syllabus because its not one link its 12 different ones. She's not understanding of any extenuating circumstances. Why would I take an online class when I have to do half of the major assignments either in person or on zoom.
Profe Jara is a really good professor. This might not be the best beginning class to take because she teaches like you're major is SPN. Don't need physical textbook. Lots of extra credit. I didn't show up for classes and missed CC and still got a B so you got this, just do homework and group skits/tests/participate
Profe Jara is one of the worst professors in the spanish department as she is very unwilling to help students that make mistakes that are HER fault. 6 hours worth of homework are due every week and a half. Class would have been better if she could actually worry about teaching and not giving busy work.
Avoid this class if you can. Prof. Jara makes it extremely difficult to access assignments and figure out when things are due, because she doesn't post due dates in the to-do section or the calendar and you instead have to go through a ton of links to find things. She's also not willing to work with students on things that are usually her fault.
