Course taken during summer session. Fast Paced, with 2 chapter units covered each week. Tests were difficult. Will have HW assignments and quizzes. Overall very clear in teaching and lecturing the course material.
Fast paced class (taken in the summer) but material was very straightforward. Homework is long, but fundamental to learning the material of the class. Tests are short and tough. Studying is necessary in this class.
Not great at answering questions, but the content is pretty clear.
The class requires to be able to keep up with homework, and it requires to read, and keep up with lectures.
Was recommended by other students looking to take this course. Mrs. Burks keeps us on tasks for the assignments. Material is tough and content VERY detailed, but the HW assignments help us work through the content. No scaling in the class, what you earn is what you get with the assignments and exams. I'm glad I took this class with Mrs. Burks!
Materials were covered in a well-organized manner and followed closely the book. Homework helped to facilitate the materials a lot. If you read the book before going to the class, it would help to learn materials much faster. Moreover, she is always willing to help you to succeed in the course. I do recommend.
This course is not easy, be prepared to work for your grade. Mrs. Burks assigns Home Work and Quizzes to cover each chapter she lectures. She makes it clear this will help in your overall grade out of the class. If you are a freshman thinking about taking this course, I would advise them to wait a few semesters.
Taking Biology 101 this Fall (2015). Mrs. Burks expects the class to understand the concepts for each chapter. She is good at explaining the details, which can be touch to understand the first time. Homework is a MUST! Exams are not easy. Have to study and work on study guides!
During lecture, there are several times when she includes participation points for answering a question. Lecture powerpoint are extremely long and you'll have a hard time keeping up. Making you wait until the end of the week to get the notes. Burks is always available for help any time you need it.
She's a really good teacher. I like the way she explained things. She really helped me succeed in the course
Great teacher. Lectures are great. Teaches clearly
This instructor is has been the best I've had this semester. She is there to help students no matter what the problem may be. She cares! The course itself is not difficult, especially because the way this professor teaches the lecture. There are also a lot of videos/animations presented throughout the lecture so this class doesn't get boring!
Always willing to help you, it's important to show up and pay attention. Very nice and personable.
Mrs. Burks is an amazing and understandable teacher that expects the best from her students
The lectures are well put together and clear, as well as are the assignments to help you better understand the material. Lecture slides are put up after the assignment and quizzes are due, which makes it difficult to actually complete the material that week. Given the fact the slides are shown at a fast pace. Overall good class to learn in.
She does an amazing job on explaining the concepts very thoroughly and if you don't understand something she is always willing to answer the questions you have.
This professor is extremely helpful in regards to making sure the students understand the concepts being taught. She will make sure you are doing what you need to in order to succeed in the course. Attendance is important to keep up with the material and earn participation points. The tests aren't too bad if you prepare for them.
Mrs. Burks MAKES sure you complete the assignments, as these help in keeping your grade above a C. It's good to have a professor who wants to make sure you pass the course. I would take her for all Biology classes if I could.
Amazing teacher and fun to go to class
She knows her stuff and is very helpful when it comes to answering questions!
MRS. BURKS is a great professor. You can tell she truly wants you to succeed and is always willing to help you.
Really good class! Just make sure to take lots of notes and show up to class. Professor is really helpful if you need help! I highly recommend this class if you aren't every good at biology
Very helpful professor. She expects each and every one of her students to succeed
Glad I took this section of BIO101. Homework helps in understanding tough concepts lectured in class. Participation matters in this class. Exams can be hard, if you don't study. Provides a study guide and reviews.
I love her. She's best I've ever had. You could not find any better teacher than her. Her exams are kind of easy. If you study a little bit hard, you'll get an A for sure.
Expect a lot of homework and a quiz each week. You can use your book, so it's not too bad. Very helpful!
Burks is a really good biology teacher! She go through her lectures very thoroughly and stops if needed if anyone has questions and reclarifies it. Her exams are pretty easy if you study and read the chapter. She works well with you IF you ask! She is strict but isn't at the same time she's loves to help students learn and she likes joke around.
I took this course Spring Semester of 2016 and enjoyed the class very much. it's not hard or difficult at all unless you don't do your homework she assignment. She is very clear with her grading. She teaches well and the class size is very small so she will know you and help you learn better. She's really nice too.
There is weekly homework and quizzes. Very helpful if you need of extra clarification. Half of the points received for the class are by class participation, quizzes, and homework- the other half is from test.. No way you should fail the class :) If you are looking to just pass, the book is not necessary.
Very good teacher. Prints off packets of the slides. If you study those slides and look at the quiz/homework questions, tests are relatively easy. There are also some in-class questions that can help pad your grade.
Mrs. Burks is really helpful at explaining things. She is very flexible if you ever need to meet with her for anything. Life 120, overall is a very tough course but she tries her best to explain it as best as she can. Be ready for weekly homework and quizzes. Also attendance is mandatory if you are wanting to get the best grade possible.
I took LIFE120 with the SSS section because it is a lot smaller. I really like how she is so engaging and understanding toward the students. Test are very hard but luckily she does take some questions from the quizzes. You really need to study for the test. Don't procrastinate (.)
Good teacher but many questions have multiple answers
Mostly lectures... good for learning basic biology. Requires a lot of reading and time put in for homework
Loved the course! Marianna is very caring and is willing to work with students. Life120 is a lot of reading but it is interesting. Tests aren't easy but there are many practice questions online for each test.
Would definitely recommend her. There's a lot of material and the later topics you cover are more difficult, but you should do fine as long as you show up to class and put in a decent amount of effort. Material is presented in a clear way and she usually does a good job of explaining it. Be prepared to spend a lot of time on homework.
Definitely have to stay on top of reading and assignments to be able to pass this class. Going everyday is important as well since there are in class questions that end up with a pretty fair impact on your grade .
She has been one of my favorite professors at UNL! She wants her students to excel and gives out extra credit. She makes the material easy to understand which is mandatory in a biology class. TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HER. You wont regret it. Sidenote: I did take the summer class. I am very happy I took this in the summer.
If you show up to class, do the homework, and read the textbook you shouldn't have any problems being successful in the course.
She's a good teacher. Class isn't that difficult but tests are pretty hard. If you don't study/do well on tests you won't do well in this class. She doesn't take attendance but has in class questions at least once a lecture that can help buffer your grade.
Mrs. Burks is a great professor. Each day there is a lecture and at least one clicker question which accounts for a great deal of points. It's important to show up to class for not only those points, but also hints about specific subjects on the exams. There are always opportunities to ask questions in and out of class.
She is a great professor who alwas make sure to take the time not only to answer questions but to encourage students to ask questions. The class is by no means an easy A, but if you read the book and do all of the Mastering Bio homework and quizzes, you will pass the class.
Wonderful teacher! Always makes sure you are on top of your homework and quizzes. Cares about you doing well in the course. Can nag you a bit, but we are college students and we need the extra push. I have really appreciated the effort she has given and she has been fair the whole way through. Definitely recommend this professor. She is great!
Explains material clearly and makes the course easy to understand. Reading the textbook is highly suggested and will really help you succeed on the exams. Most exams are based directly off the textbook. Mastering biology takes some time but it isn't too challenging.
This Instructor was extremely fair in her grading. Her lectures were better than other lectures. i.e. I was able to stay awake during them. Overall I highly recommend this class and instructor to other students.
Mrs. Burks was an amazing teacher. She was very understanding if something came up and gave extra credit. There is a lot of homework, but it helps you get ready for the tests.
She is very funny, very southern, very knowledgeable .
Tests are kind of tricky, but not hard to pass.
Highly recommend taking General Chemistry before hand. Course isn't difficult if you read the book and do the homework. I did best by reading the book and google-ing or YouTubing concepts that I didn't understand. I didn't retain much information during the lecture, but found reading/youtube were the best ways to learn the information.
She will do everything she can to make sure you pass, but you have to meet her half way. If you attend class, ask questions, read the book, and complete the homework, this class should be no problem for you. Yes, the content is hard, but she will work with you if you're willing to put in the hard work.
Took the class in 8 week summer session, expectations were clear. Gave plenty of time to complete homework assignments and quizzes, checked at the beginning of every class period as to if there were any questions on the material, homework assignments, or anything else. Willing to work around schedule conflicts as long as she is aware a week advance
Mrs. Burks is a very nice professor and she is enjoyable to listen to. She does make many mistakes when she is lecturing so be sure to actually look at the slides. She will tell you that you have to read the textbook in order to pass the class but if you even remotely remember anything from high school biology the class will be pretty easy.
Only read straight from the powerpoints that the publisher provided, which became available after class. Didn't offer clear explanation on missed test answers.
Great teacher, would recommend!
She is a really nice person, but sometimes I just got the impression that she didn't really know what she was talking about. When teaching a concept, she would explain it incorrectly or make it a little misleading.
It's a good intro bio class and professor Burks is nice. You need to make sure you do all of the homework and that you get in a save the answers as soon as she posts them because they aren't available very long, which is pretty annoying. She shows lots of videos. If you think that you'll need lots of one on one attention I'd recommend another proff
Most lectures consisted of her reading powerpoint slides. These are available online . You have to come to class however to get i clicker points. She also uses instructional videos that help understand concepts. Class is really boring. Good teacher though. Very strict on homework and quiz due dates. Get them done on time and no problem
Great professor!
great teacher
Very nice and helpful professor. You can tell Mrs. Burks truly cares about her students learning.
There is a lot of information that is covered in a short amount of time. The materials are available, but it is up to the student to utilize them.
I have been benefitting a lot from this class with all of the opportunities to succeed. There is a lot of work, but as long as you stay on top of things, it's pretty simple work.
Coming to class is very beneficial! Her lectures are well displayed and she expands on all of the material. She does concept questions every class, and as long as you are actively learning, you will earn easy daily points. The homework and homework quizzes are all online, which makes it easier to learn by using resources such as books and quizlet.
Good during her lectures, There is a lot of homework, you must work for it to get a solid grade.
She is a great teacher, and will help to make sure you pass. Make sure you do all the homework, and quizzes though. It will be able to help keep your grade up during the course.
This is a very lecture heavy class with the majority of your grade coming form homework due online along with the exams. The teacher stresses the importance of staying on track and up to date with studying and homework and where you should be at with your understanding of the material.
Mrs. Burks is a great teacher who will truly care for you. She will make you work and do your assignments but she cares, so what more could you want? I highly recommend her to all students able to take her if you want to learn. If not she isn't for you but in your best interest you should take her.
The class is what you would expect from a biology class. Doing the reading & homework assigments is necessary to do well in the class, but she does do very well at explaining the concepts in lectures and helping her students better understand the material. As long as you take the class seriously & pay attention, it is a great class to take with her
Just make sure you read. She's a good teacher but make sure you do your homework and keep up with others.
Mrs. Burks is a really great teacher, she cares about her students and will push you. You will learn a lot in her class
She gets mad at you if you don't work on the homework constantly everyday. Very hard tests average 62% on the first test and mine went up from there.
Class where you're going to have to read and do a lot of homework. If you're willing to get help she will be there to help you. Need to show interest in your work and come to class because attendance is checked everyday.
Mrs. Burks is a great professor. She cares about her students and likes them to be involved and on top of their homework. Her videos that go along with her lectures really help! But, to pass this course you need to go to class and do the homework! The homework and quizzes really help your grade if you didn't do too well on the test!
She is a very great teacher. She explains things very well and thoroughly. She is very kind and she knows her stuff. I highly recommend her!
Very well educated and precise professor. Makes class intriguing and at the same time makes your learn and put in maximum effort. Being active throughout class is a must, because without participation you miss key concepts and material that is discussed. Very organized and cares about your success.
Mrs. Burks is an excellent professor. She is very caring and will do anything in her power to help you succeed. Stay on top of all your assignments and readings and you will do marvelous in this course.
Mrs. Marianna Burks Is great professor, she is really caring and does want you to do good in her course. The class is really mild difficulty in terms of understanding what is being taught in lecture but she makes it more easy for you to understand. There is a lot homework but , if you get ahead of it then it wont be that hard.
Professor Burks is honestly an amazing professor. She takes the time to make sure that every student is understanding what we are learning- if you're not, she does everything she can to help you. She really does care about her students and how well they perform. I would definitely recommend! It's not too hard if you actually take time for the class
Mrs. Burks is great, you can tell she genuinely cares about each and every student. The course is difficult, but she provides you with what you need to succeed and is very good at answering questions. She also has some great advice about what you need to do in the course to do well. It is very important to read the textbook when she tells you to!!
Great Professor! She goes through powerpoint lectures, but later posts it on blackboard. She does give you review guides. She guides you through the class. Dont be afraid to ask questions! She will explain and give real life examples to understand the curriculum. HELPFUL!
Amazing caring teacher that I definitely want to keep in touch with! Can tell that she cares about everyone.
awesome teacher
Marianna was an outstanding professor. She was always super nice and cared about people understanding the content that we covered. If there was ever an question that student encountered, she was there to provide help and clarity.
Don't be me and not think that the homework is important. It'll mess you up grade wise. She's very good and I really appreciate how well she teaches. Learn to ask questions.
hard tests, tricky questions
Goes through the slides pretty fast but puts them up later. Honestly just read the book before the test and did pretty well. The homework helps a lot with your grade.
She is a very knowledgeable teacher and she is passionate about what she does. Her test are hard I won't lie but overall I enjoyed the course.
Best professor EVER
Marianna was a very good teacher I learned quickly that the I had to stay on top of masteringbiology and the quizzes missing a few adds up quickly. Overall really liked her class.
She's a great lady
She's Very engaging and easy to listen too
Follow the book as she goes through the lectures.
This class requires a lot of outside reading and involvement on the student's part. The lectures are very helpful but she expects you to have read the material before coming to lecture, which does help with the in-class exercises. She lets you know her policies before the class begins and is good at reminding you of online homework and quizzes.
Professor Burks is a really good teacher that is very clear on what is going to be on the test. She is a really good teacher who teaches you all the material you need to know. Highly Recommend.
I always felt the clicker questions were over topics we didn't go over until after it was asked, which caused me to lose a lot of points and my grade suffered from it. The wording of test questions was so ambiguous I felt the class was more of an English class. If you've taken advanced sciences already, I wouldn't suggest marianna
Reading the textbook will obviously be helpful to do well in the class. Her test, homework, and quizzes all come from the textbook, so there are no random questions that you have never learned about.
Ms Burks is a very intelligent and accommodating professor. The course kind of sucks because of the homework and lab but she makes it as easy as she can. You won't fail if you do mediocre on the tests but good on the online homework.
she makes the lessons easy to understand and follow; stops to answer questions clearly
A good professor.
Great instructor. Explained the material well, although, her tests are difficult. Participation/attendance points add up and affect your grade.
She's really nice and straightforward. It's clear what you need to do to get the grades you want. There are lots of homework and quizzes that really help you learn and help cushion your grades. Tests are hard since it's application multiple choice. Be prepared to work hard and be prepared for class.
she makes the lessons easy to understand and follow; stops to answer questions clearly. good teacher
She is a very nice professor and the knowledge from this class is useful.
Attendance was not mandatory, but in class participation points were given for a total off 10% of your grade (if you receive full points). The class is do-able as long as you're willing to put in the effort and put in extra time to study. Working ahead is not mandatory, but will bring you more success. The online study area taught me more, however.
Marianna Burks was a very respectful and kind professor. Overall her exams were relatively reasonable and most questions made you think more than other biology courses you take in high school. In addition, there was a fairly large amount of homework and at times the homework did not apply well to the information being taught in class.
Marianna Burks was an enthusiastic professor who knew the course material well and encouraged students to study material ahead of lectures. Tests were very difficult, and the homework was quite lengthy. Be prepared to invest a large amount of time taking practice tests and studying the course material forwards, backwards, and sideways.
Good professor all in all. Make sure you do the assigned homework before she begins lecturing so you can grasp the material.
Professor Burks is a good professor. She is engaging during her lectures and breaks up lectures with videos to help it not become boring. Homework is a big part of the class and it helps with the overall grade because many points will come from it. Be prepared to read the chapters and learn the material.
Tests are hard. Always in class participation. Makes you apply material. Class was challenging.
Overall a good class, sometimes the homework assignments were helpful in preparing for the exam, sometimes the were less helpful.
Overall professor Burks did an overall good job in teaching this over the summer. I appreciated how she made sure the basics were understood. My one gripe was, when asking clarifying questions she didn't always answer clearly, even after followup questions. This could be due to the more compressed nature of the summer course, not her directly.
I took the 8 week summer course for Biology so it was definitely a lot tougher than what I'm assuming would be a regular semester long course. She definitely lets you know that the exams are tough, as they truly are. However, she gives great lectures and opportunities to succeed as long as you are willing to put in some real effort!
good teacher
She goes out of her way to make the class easy for you but it is up to the student to do the work and put in the effort to pass.
Ms. Burks is an outstanding teacher who makes you work hard. There is a lot of assignment questions due at the end of the week but they are very helpful in terms of the exams.
Lots of work and effort should be put in to do well. Hard class but Burks is a nice lady and very understanding.
Burks will make you read a looot from the book. There is a lot of information packed into small lecture sections, so you need to be prepared to take fast notes and listen thoroughly
You have to be willing to put a lot of effort into this course. If you don't use the guided readings and try to wing it, you will not pass on the tests. The homework is fairly easy, just pay attention to due dates. She is very flexible if you have issues getting things done, and genuinely cares about how you are doing and learning.
She will surprise you with pop quizzes a lot so be ready to answer questions the next class period. Always read the material the night before so you can get those points the next day. Material is very hard to understand, so you must work hard to succeed.
Very heavy lectures, need to actually pay attention and engage in class. If you study for the test, you'll be fine. Lots of homework, and need to read.
She is a good instructor who is passionate about her material and gives you everything needed to succeed. It's up to the student to put in the effort.
Burks is amazing and energetic about what she teaches. The class not only teaches materials but clearly states where concepts are applicable in life.
I like Mrs. Burks she's really caring and respectful. We do have a lot of homework and sometimes it is overwhelming but that would be the only thing i really dislike about the course.
She is a Professor who wants to see you succeed but makes you work for it. There is a lot of homework online, usually 70-100 questions weekly. If you have any questions she is always willing to try and explain it to the best of her ability. Attendance is necessary esp. because there are in class participation points, questions, & lecture is heavy.
Very nice teacher, but just reds from the power points and doesn't thoroughly explain. But very nice teacher and gives extra credit.
Test are very difficult, but she makes sure you are prepared for them.
Doing concept questions help you stay on top of class lecture.
Great teacher who cares deeply for her students. She does the best to inspire her students to find the person they will become, finding ways to involve us during and out of class. Among the Life120 instructors, she may not be as well known as the other instructors but she has the qualification to stand alongside them as on equal. Thank you.
She's a good professor but makes her tests really hard to pass
Very helpful, have been helping me get my grade up in class.
Professor Burks demonstrates a strong passion for what she teaches and tries to share her passion with other students. Although there is a lot of homework that sometimes feels tedious, it drives home the key info. Her teaching style involves a lot of analogies which some students may find helpful in mastering complex topics.
She is very engaging in teaching. Application is a large part, not just memorizing information.
She is really great! READ THE TEXTBOOK and be ready for a pop quiz on the subject. She's not really "hard", but all her tests are application so know your stuff.
Great class! She provides you with the materials you need, however, you have to apply yourself. The test are difficult but the other work is easier, which will help bump your grade
Awesome teacher. She is very passionate and knows what she is talking about. Probably one of the harder ones or the hardest out of the the teachers available for this class. I recommend doing all homework+study modules and practice exams on mastering biology. Homework is a huge grade so dont slack there. Be prepared for application.
Great teacher but make sure to do the work.
Mrs. Burks is really enjoyable as a professor. This class is really hard in general, and even tougher at such a fast pace over summer; however, Mrs. Burks makes the class fun and worth waking up early in summer for!
I was prepared for your typical below average summer instructor, but I'm pleased to say I was wrong. Prof Burks is a fantastic lecturer who keeps things interesting and relevant. She cares about students and wants them to succeed. Get ready for some fairly difficult exams but with fabulous instruction.
Professor Burks was a great instructor, especially for teaching a summer course. The shifts between lectures, videos, and in-class assignments helped me stay focused and gave us a chance to practice the material. The tests are hard, but if you study the study guides and practice tests they are more than doable.
Even though I took the class merely for a scientific base, and the course was rather difficult for me, I'm still VERY GLAD that I took it to the extent that I can't believe I even considered NOT taking it (before enrolling).
Professor Burks obviously cares a lot about her students, and while the tests are difficult, they are by no means impossible and as long as you put the work in, you will be prepared for her tests.
I took LIFE 120 as a summer class, so it is expected to be lecture heavy since it is 1/2 the time. She does a really good job of explaining and making sure you understand. She sends emails reminding you of due dates, which is very helpful. She does a lot of exercises in class to aid in understanding the difference processes.
Class is kinda lecture heavy and there is a lot of homework, but it helps in the long run with balancing your grade. It overall makes the class less stressful because the class isn't test orientated therefore your overall grade isn't coming from only test. Make sure you work hard and the class will be a breeze.
I took BIO 101 with Mrs. Burks and it was one of my heavier loads when it came to homework and classwork, but the teacher works well with accommodations. She's very thorough with lectures and explains all the concepts.
She's a great teacher, but she's not going to just give you an A. You have to work for it. Always go to office hours because it shows that you care about your grade. She does show grace, but only if you put in the effort.
Great professor, makes the learning easy. Cares about you succeeding and sends you many reminders of assignments and due dates.
Mrs. Burks keeps it real, which I like. You have to put in the work to succeed but she'll get you through it.
The homework is very helpful when it comes to improving your overall grade. She is very nice and helpful. As long as you try and put effort into everything in this class she will help you. The homework is harder than the actual tests and she does a lot of extra credit opportunity.
There are many opportunities for a successful outcome. The effort put in is what you get out because she really tries her best to make us prepared
This class is a heavier load than the others but it is soooo worth it! You learn so much better within the smaller class. She adds a lot of participation grades in that help you work through the concepts! You definitely get a better understanding of biology by being in her classes.
she really cares about her students and makes the lecture a bit more interesting. you definitely have to put in the work and use the many resources she provides to get a good grade. i would take another course with her!
Great Lecture, but lots of homework. Stay on top of your work. Studying for exams is vital. Lecture everyday is a lot but most of the time it is worth it. I like the review sessions she gives before an exam
work hard in her class
Attendance is taken everyday. Lecture heavy and very detailed. Writes own test questions so you must study in depth. There is class assessments almost everyday for points too. Professor cares about student's performance.
Lectures are good fillers, but I really recommend reading the book for more in depth. This is a good course for people who like to go over the material every day.
This type of lecture worked really well for me. It's every day and you go through material more thoroughly than a large lecture hall. It is imperative that you do the homework assigned and come to class or you won't understand anything you cover. It was just annoying that homework was assigned before we covered the topic in the lecture.
A lot of in class activities. Online homework which can get more specific than the lectures. She is very easy to understand and willing to help and answer questions when needed.
This course requires active participation and there are activities that include group work as well as individuals assessments. There exams are challenging, but there are opportunities to earn points back through attendance, online homework and quizzes, as well as in class assignments. Ms. Burks is very thorough and wants students to do well.
Burks is a wonderful professor and makes sure that everyone in class understands the material. Having the class discussion allows students to get to know each other more versus a big lecture. There is a lot of homework problems, however, the points should help you in the end.
She is an amazing professor that works with you every step of the way (if you need it). Attendance is mandatory and important. Lots of work needs to be put into the class.
It is important to show up to class daily, as attendance points are given each day. She does a great job going in depth on extensive material and has great lectures each day. She does her best to make sure you understand the material and provides the materials needed to do so. She is very nice, funny, and relatable.
Burks always answers my question and the lecture is amazing, however she lets her TA teaches 2 lectures recently, and I did not understand the concept at all. Good professor but did not enjoy the TA. Make sure you take notes on your quizzes because her tests will have some questions from the quiz.
professor Burks has to be the best professor i have had so far! The way her class is design is for the best interest of the students. Yes, her class has a lot of homework but I learned so much in her class than I would have in a huge lecture class. I totally recommend taking her class.
It's possible there's a contrast in the way that I learn and the way that Ms. Burks teaches, but this was one of the most frustrating experiences of my college career. She doesn't seem to understand that teaching a concept comes BEFORE applying the concept. After I just started teaching myself, I did much better on tests. She's very enthusiastic.
Burks is a great professor, very interactive with students and often gives real-life examples when teaching. You will work in teams and have in class assessments almost daily so attendance is mandatory. There's a lot of hw but you'll be thankful for it because it provides a buffer for your grade, since the exams are very difficult.
Shes a very good teacher that knows how to explain difficult material in a way for easy understanding.
Mrs. Burks is firm but fair. She does a great job in lectures explaining the material, however she doesn't quite seem to understand the "Learning the Concept VS Applying the concept". Be ready to read, the Mastering Biology is very helpful, but I found outside sources, like khan academy, helped me way more. Her class and tests REALLY MAKE YOU THINK
She's a very funny teacher that makes the lectures pretty enjoyable. Which is good because attendance is mandatory and you can really only miss a couple all semester if you hope to get an A. A good amount of homework but you get multiple attempts at each question, it's a very good way to prep for the tests. Would definitely recommend.
Mra. Burks was a very caring teacher and she wants her students to do well.
Such a great teacher, highly recommend taking Biology with her. Is very understanding and makes sure everyone knows the concept. Makes lecture interesting and makes class fun to go to!
Overall, a really good teacher. Class is only hard if you don't go to class and don't do the work.
Lots of in class activities that are very helpful. Very nice and is very understanding.
She is a great professor. She will have weekly assignments and a quiz over each chapter you learn. There is a LOT of participation points so its good to show up for class. She creates an awesome learning environment and allows for interactive activities with your peers.
You do a lot of hands on activities in her class. We also draw a lot of diagrams that help us learn and remmeber the things we're taught better. I'm more of a visial and hands on kind of leaner and she's the perfect professor for someone like that.
She takes time to teach the content for her students. She makes sure her students know their material. Be prepare to draw, because you'll draw a lot to help you visualize what chromosomes, DNA and cycles would look like.
Mrs. Burks is great! She truly expresses her concern and her determination for every student to do well in the course. She also does not throw information at you for you to figure it out on your own. I highly recommend Professor Burks.
I'm sad I cant have her as my teacher again next semester :(
Shes a really great professor. Very understanding when it comes to difficulties outside of school.
She cares about your grade and whether you are understanding the materials or not. She adjust her schedule to take more time on chapter that she can tell her students are struggling with. There is a lot of work that is put into this course, but it is so helpful in the long run.
Mrs. Burks is a great teacher. She is very passionate about her job and makes an effort to help students succeed. Mrs. Burks is often quirky and fun and makes the course feel less intense. With all the different activities and assignments given, it keeps the class interesting and engaging.
The reading and writing intensity is how a typical biology class would be. Just continuing to use the tutors and doing the assignments can get you far. It's required you participate so that you can know the material better. She is also available outside of class.
She's a great professor.
The assignments and test intensity is how a typical biology class would be, except it meets daily. Required to visit tutors and complete tutor hours for each exam and doing the assignments and in-class worksheets can get you far. It's required you participate so that you can know the material better. She is also available outside of class.
Mrs. Burks is the best professor I have ever had. She will take time out of her day to help you understand the material or even just to chat with you. Mrs. Burks is so passionate about her teaching that it makes me want to continue learning, if it wasn't for her I would have changed my major. She's amazing. This was for BIOS-101
Professor Burks is the best biology teacher you could ask for. She is very understanding and generally cares for each of her student. For the tests there wont be any surprises, she makes sure each student has the materials they need to succeed.
Mrs. Burks is a very amazing teacher at UNL, she really helps you understand Biology by keeping you on your feet with homework and discussion and always keep you practice the material and go over it.
Prof Burks has been a great mentor. She always makes the assignment easier for us especially with pandemic going on. Easy to talk to and is always willing to work with any difficulties we have.
Her encouragement throughout the year really helped me get through online classes and showed how much she cares about your learning instead of your grades
She replied to everything very fast, and gave you good feedback! She is supportive and cares about her students! You have to put a lot of afford to get a good grade! If you attend class regularly, do homework, and study hard, you will get a better grade.
Dr. Burks was one of the most personable professors I've ever had. She deeply cares about her students and it is evident in the way she runs class and interacts with them. She doesn't expect perfection, simple effort will go a long way! Definitely recommend her if you want to enjoy a bio course!
Professor Burks was the best teacher I have had in college so far. She cared for all of her student's individual success. She made sure to be available for other students who needed extra help and created her class to give you the most opportunities to succeed. She cares much more about the students grasp on the subject than test grades.
Mrs. Burks was the first college professor that actually took time outside of class to sit down with me and encourage me. Having had huge lectures, this was a breath of fresh air. The course does have a lot of homework but they are usually just 10-20 min a day outside of class and you will get an A.
Best Professor Ive ever had
One of the best profs Ive had. She cares about students and your success. Do what she says to do, and youll be successful. Exam reviews, practice tests, homework, attendance, activities will get you far. Kind of homework heavy, but that puts less stress on exams. Take her section 100%.
Mrs. Burkes is an amazing teacher and I would love to take her class again! Would definitely recommend the summer session for Life 120.
I LOVED MRS. BURKS WOTH MY WHOLE HEART!
I was hesitant entering the semester on biology. Mrs. Burks was my biggest cheerleader throughout the whole semester. Make sure you write things down when she tells you to, and always ask questions and be willing to participate.
Mrs. Burks is one of the most caring professors I have ever had in a course, she just really wants the best for EVERY ONE of her students. I took her LIFE120 course in the summer and even at an accelerated pace, she had the course under control and adamantly worked with students on getting assignments turned in. Overall, I would highly recommend!
Best science teacher I've had so far, she cares about each student's success. She is great at teaching content in lecture and ties back to previous material, which really helps. This class is focused on understanding, not memorizing. The scale is cancelled out by a raise in percent needed for each letter grade, but hard work can get a great grade.
You can tell she actually cared about her students and what shes teaching. Amazing teacher!
She only reopens assignments for certain students and not others even if both of you show up to class. The tests are hard and she will not curve them. Our class average was less than 57%. Instead, she the gave us 5 extra credit points that went in separate from our test that was worth 100 points. Take it if you want a low grade!
She genuinely cares for her students and trys to connect with them bio isnt always fun but she makes u want to learn or at least makes learning it easier shes also down to earth funny and is easy to connect with and verry understandable lowkey wish she was my professor for all my science classes.
Really values assignments on a program (mastering) and canvas assignments (around 3 per week). She reassures that as long as you are totaling your points, you will be okay if you arent a solid test taker. Tests make you apply not memorize. Weekly extra credit is available and she truly cares about her students
She tries to make class easier and more relatable. There's a lot of assignments, but that means that the tests won't screw you over. She's very fun and approachable!
Very nice teacher, good at helping students understand difficult concepts. There is a lot of homework but it is more tedious than difficult.
This class definitely make you work for it, and it can be very confusing at times but she is very helpful with everything. She responds back to us when we email her as soon as she can and gives great instructions. I know for her class I just need to do my best and get my homework done on time and do my best on exams and that is all I can do.
Professor Burks is the best! She truly cares about every student and wants them to succeed. The class does have quite a bit of homework, but it is a reasonable amount that prepares you for the exams. Burks gives you all of the resources to succeed, and if you take advantage of them, you will! She is the best!
Mrs. Burks has by far been my favorite professor this semester. She is hilarious, and she is very intentional about helping us learn. She gives us a lot of assignments, but they are really easy and make it so that you do not have to stress hardly at all over the exams! She is really caring and helpful outside of class, and she gets back to you fast
Mrs. Burkes has been the best professor I have had and goes above and beyond to help her students succeed. She has been more than understanding and I feel as if I've learned a lot from her class. Though the course has been difficult and you must work for your grade, Mrs. Burks provides many extra credit opportunities and is always there to help.
She is wonderful. Burks helps in and out of class. She cares about you academically and outside of school and makes sure you are successful
I absolutely love Mrs. Burks! She was one of the best professors I've ever had and she cares a lot about her students. She does give out a ton of homework, but the points add up so it helps your grade after exams.
Its hard to get an A in the way she grades and doesnt curve exams. Otherwise, she is nice. The hardest 100 level course here
She is pretty firm about grades and will not change them. Even though other assignments help make up for the total course points, if you are not a good test taker it keeps you from getting an A. Her office hours never worked for me but her TAa office hours were open!
Loved her as a professor!! Sadly, her teaching style did not work for me. I spent the most time on the course outside of lecture and also get the lowest grade . I also put the most effort into this class and my grade didnt reflect my effort at all. Take English, math, or history instead if you dont need this course!
The class is ran like a high school class not a college course. There's a ton of homework assignments and they're all based off of two minute videos so its hard to find the answers. Lectures aren't that helpful and the way she answers questions is confusing.
The class's material can be challenging but the instructor is happy to help and answer questions. Because there are a lot of assignments there is still an opportunity to get a decent grade in the class if you are not a good test taker. Attendance is mandatory and can/will affect your grade, but overall the instructor is very much qualified.
Professor Burks was great! She really cares for her students both academically and individually. This class is assignment heavy, but it serves as an opportunity to truly understand the course material and prepare for exams. Overall, if you put in the work and the effort, you'll succeed in this class.
Honestly Professor Burks is one of the best professors at UNL. She is caring and so understandable if you talk to her. She looks out for the best interest of the class. A lot of homework is given in this class but it helps your grade stay passing. I failed every exam pretty badly because I lacked to prepare for them but the homework kept me afloat.
Burks is an amazing person, but as an instructor she just did not work for me. If you are not good at taking exams, especially at the DLC I wouldnt recommend taking her. The exams prevented me from getting a good grade in her class. Also, theres a lot of assignments and she does not believe in extra credit.
I wouldn't have taken this course with any other professor besides Ms. Burks because she really cares about how her students are doing in the class! There's a lot of homework in this class to act as a buffer for your grade in case you fail a test. To study for her test, I highly recommend working on practice problems rather than using your notes!
She is super caring and does a great job of working with students. The exams are challenging- most people average around a 70% but she assigns a lot of homework and offers extra credit- so you can help your grade!
There's a lot of homework, but she gives you plenty of time to complete and is open to giving you more time if needed. The tests can be challenging, but she offers extra credit and if you do your assignments your grade will be okay.
Very easy professor
Marianna Burks is a good professor! I could've gotten an A if I had tried in this class. Attendance is not mandatory, but she does give extra credit on random days. Lots of homework. You cover 15 chapters in one semester, and there are 4 exams (plus a final exam during the last week). Make sure to do your assignments and STUDY for those exams.
Mrs. Burks was awesome! Lots of extra credit for attending class. Quite a few assignments, but they are generally graded on completion. She seems to want her students to understand and succeed in her class.
I took Bios101 with her before deciding I wanted to go pre-health. Then I realized I would need to take Life 120 and did way better in that class. I took Chem 109 and 110 and did better in those classes than I did in Bios 101. I believe it is a teaching issue as somebody who had gotten an A in every other science class here at UNL. Nice lady though
I took Ms. Burks' BIOS 101 course in the fall semester, and she is an amazing teacher! Although she assigns a lot of homework, these assignments help you build your score! The exams are challenging, but if you do the extra credit, study in the Mastering Pearson study space, and watch the videos for each module, you can get an A.
Mrs. Burks really cares about her students and wants everyone to really grasp the material. There are A LOT of assignments every week, which can be overwhelming, but this really helps offset your exam scores so that you can still succeed in the course even if you aren't doing well on exams. Attendance is mandatory.
Mrs. Burks is a great professor and lecturer. She does assign a lot of homework, but it really does help you understand the material better. The exams aren't too terrible, she provides study guides and has lots of in-class activities to prepare you as well. Defeniteily lots of material to study, but overall a good and easy class for an Ace credit.
She is a good person and is really passionate about her teaching. She does not teach the information thoroughly just touches on A LOT. SO MUCH homework be ready to work more than 5 hours of homework a week. She makes everything due at 10:59 pm because she thinks her class is the only one that matters. She makes exams a lot harder than needed.
Dr. Burks is one of the best professors I've ever had. Her TAs and herself make the class super enjoyable. I honestly felt super comfortable in her class and felt that she truly cared about me.
She is a great teacher. It is important to be at each and every lecture, because if you miss one you are going to feel like you missed a lot. The exams are pretty hard, harder than they need to be sometimes. There is a lot of homework but it is all beneficial to your learning and your success in the course.
I loved Dr. Burks, although the class itself was difficult, she always made class fun and enjoyable. She makes sure that you will pass the class and is very student oriented. The exams are very difficult but she makes sure you have the materials accessible to you to be successful.
Professor Burks is my favorite professor this semester. You can tell she cares about the success of her students and loves what she teaches. Her lectures are interesting and engaging. There are about 4-5 assignments a week but this helps balance out the grades from exams. If you have to take biology take her class!
Dr. Burks was an amazing teacher. She is passionate about what she teaches which makes learning in class much easier. Take the time to do all the homework assignments they help your grade a ton. Take advantage of bonus points. Take advantage of the study guides she provides.
She an amazing professor who will give you the help you need. You just have to take the help and not ignore it.
This is the best teacher I have ever had in my life. She is so inspiring and cares for her students. She assigns a lot of homework, which only helps your grade if you do it. I have never learned so much in a class than in this class. She has inspired me to do healthcare. I hear bad things about Glider, save yourself and take it with Burks!!
Professor is very nice. Has loads of homework, but these points make up for tests that you may not do well on. Love the information, and homework.
I love Professor Burks, she is very funny and she shows how she truly cares about her students. She and her TAs always email in a reasonable and timely manner. There is a lot of work and it will always be due by the start of next week (Sunday) so you should learn how to manage your time effectively. Attendance is not mandatory but it's important!!!
Dr. Burks is by far the best teacher I have ever had. Her lectures are very engaging and she truly cares about her students and their success. Although there are a lot of assignments each week, they are helpful in understanding concepts and easy points so your grade isn't based entirely on exams.
Burkes was one of my favorite professors and was the only one who truly cared about her students. There was a lot of homework but these points mean you could bomb her tests and still end up with a good grade. If you put in the work on the assignments, and study a little bit, its an easy A.
She is an extremely caring professor! There is lots of cushioning because of the amount of assignments there are. The exams can be difficult but if you do decently and do all the assignments you should end with a good grade. There is often extra credit to boost your grade too
I took bios110- Dr Burks is great, I would recommend taking her class.
BIO 110: Dr. Burks is an awesome professor who truly cares about her students. Exams can be kind of difficult but overall this a good class and I feel like I learned a lot!
She is a great professor class is very easy as far as most biology classes are concerned. If you do the assignments & show up to class, you will be ok with tougher exams. Definitely possible to end with an A as long as you do the work!!
Dr. Burks does assign a lot of homework BUT it is extremely helpful in the long run. If you get it done, you will pass. The exams are a bit more difficult but like I said, get the homework done and you will pass. She does talk a lot sometimes but, in all reality, it is enjoyable. She's very easy going and a good professor.
Dr. Burks is an amazing professor. She truly cares about students and their success in this course. This class has a lot of homework as a buffer. While there are tests, doing bad on a test will not be detrimental to your grade as the homework and in-class activities act as a buffer. She teaches very thoroughly and is very helpful. Take this class!
One of the most caring, passionate, and understanding professors I have had the pleasure of learning from at UNL. There is A LOT of homework, but she writes semi-difficult tests, so it's all in the name of not making her lecture grade test dominant. If you stay engaged, show up to lecture, and do your assignments, she will look after you.
Professor Burks is a great instructor who really cares about her students. While the class has a lot of homework, it's super helpful for doing well on the exams. Definitely do the assignments and use resources like unstuckstudy ai - it will pay off with a good grade.
She was a really good teach super nice But really homework heavy.
This class was decently challenging, but doable. My best advice is READ THE TEXTBOOK. She has lots of additional help content on canvas that will be beneficial. Yes, there's a lot of homework, but it's to your benefit and can help cut down on the time you spend studying. The exams were tough, but she does not scale her course so that helps.
This was an easy class as long as you do the homework and on time. You don't really need to read the textbook unless you aren't understanding something. There is a decent amount of homework but it is not difficult. Attendance was mandatory and would drop your grade about .3% for each class that you missed.
Loved listening to her lectures. Go to every class because it's points and she gives you in class material. Tells you exactly what to study on the test so listen. Overall really liked this class.
Dr. Burks is an amazing and thoughtful professor who truly cares for her students. There was a lot of homework for this course, but they prevent your exams from impacting your grade too much. You will pass if you put in the work and ask questions!
Dr. Burks is a great professor. She gives so many extra credit opportunities. Exams don't impact your grade too much. Mostly assignments/HW and her lectures are very interesting/engaging. Just try your best, ask for help when needed and you'll do great. Assignments/HW help a lot with understanding material. Textbook was online and free of charge.
Dr. Burks is a fantastic teacher; she genuinely wants you to pass her class, but also wants you to actually understand the concepts. She ensured that I submitted all my work and encouraged me to continue even if it was hard, I would definitely have her as a professor again.
If you follow everything the professor tells you to, the class will be easy
Absolutely lovely professor, She is so bright and very well at explaining course information. She is also very understanding and will accommodate for most things.
Good amount of homework but a great teacher.
As long as you get 100 on the homework assignments, you'll be fine getting B's on the tests and end off with an A. There are about 2 assignments a week with one quiz per unit. These take a few hours a week to complete, but they're very doable and help on the exams. She is so nice and knows what she's talking about.
I think the course will seem difficult at first, but the assignments will help you. There is extra credit occasionally. The class is very interesting, and Professor Burks is amazing. You have time for assignments, exams, and feel prepared. She covers all the material, has helpful handouts, and provides additional help.
I would love to have her as my professor again. The course may seem overwhelming and difficult at first, but the assignments are very helpful. Plenty of time to get assignments done, extra credit opportunities, and time to study for exams. She is an amazing person as well. I enjoyed the lectures and topics of this course.
Although the course required hours a week of reading and notes, I would 100% retake Burks class. She truly cares about her students and learning and I enjoyed coming to her lectures. She was a great teacher, kept me engaged, and made the material fun to learn.
