Several group projects but never had to meet outside of class. One research paper, lots of memos, a couple letters, resume and cover letter. I would definitely take this prof again. Always lets you know what is due next although it changes from time to time.
I really liked her as a prof. She was very humorous and made group stuff fun. There were a lot of memos, and pretty much a presentation every week. Not a hard grader, met with every student at mid terms to tell them their grade. Highly recommend her. Class is mostly group stuff.
One of the greatest English professors at SVSU. She can balance fun and work in the classroom. I would tell everyone to take her if you can.
Pretty easy, but she can be a little pushy and stuck in her ways. Just follow the example formats and you will get an A. The group assignments are short and presentations are easy.
I am not sure if the person who commented on English 300 was in the same class as me, but I couldn't disagree more strongly. Professor Bird was fantastic, easy going, open minded and fair. We were in charge of our destiny in that class. She was a good guide, interested in us as people and had the
amazing professor. made the class fun. a lot of interaction with the students. the work isn't too hard, and she tells you exactly what she expects, so there is no reason to get a bad grade. lots of group work, but you never have to meet outside of class
Awesome class and awesome teacher. She is extremely clear and helpful as to what she expects. Be prepared to laugh because she makes it fun. Would definetly take again.
good teacher overall. reviews ur rough drafts everytime so there is no reason to not get a good grade on papers, other work is mainly journals (1-1.5 pgs). take her if possible!
Prof. Bird was the best English teacher I've ever had. She didn't ask that much out of students. Doesn't believe in tests or quizzes, write an article summary every week, reflection papers, resume, and a few other non-time consuming assignments. Highly recommend!
This teacher is great. She has a great attitude, is laid back, and is absolutly hilarious! The class is great- homework is so easy. Homework is the same every week. There is only one paper throughout the whole class and you turn it in in three parts all a month apart! She is a wonderful teacher and I recommend her to anyone!
BEST TEACHER EVER
Ms. Bird was the best English Prof. I have ever had. She is so fun and laid back. She likes to goof around but knows when to be serious. If you do the work and go to class you will get an a. I recommend her to anyone!
She's pretty much the most brilliant professor at SVSU. You really learn how to write. I highly recommend her. You've never had a class until you've taken one with her.
I really enjoy having her as an instructor.
Kind of crazy, but good teacher
Something due every week. She keeps you on your toes. And she know her english! Best teacher ever!
Great and Funny! She tries to keep the class on track and awake! Many in class assignments and if you are absent you can't make them up. Sometimes a wishy-washy with assignment requirements. Overall I would recommend her! If you go to class and somewhat pay attention and do your work outside of class, youll be fine. Overall Very amusing!!!!!!
Loved her! She is an excellent teacher and is really funny. You do some busy work, but it's easy and there's only one "big" paper for the class. I highly recommend to take her if you can!
A lot of class participation credit.
Kind of crazy, but not too bad of a teacher. You have to write what she wants to get a decent grade. YOu have usually one to two papers due each week. I wouldn't take her again
Great teacher! Loved attending class. Assignments were easy enough.
Awesome teacher!! Would recommend to anyone! I had her at 8:30, and i usually hate morning classes, but didnt mind going at all! A lot of group work, but worth while. Other assignments are not that difficult! good class
Prof. Bird keeps things simple and her assignments aren't particularly demanding. The class focuses on improving short, one-page, repetitive assignments on newspaper articles and chapters read from textbooks. She offers plenty of peer and professor revision time and all assignments can be rewritten for a better grade.
This was a great class. We had a lot of work but they were always interesting and she kept things running. Loved it!
a blast!
she was my favorite teacher, she was always willing to help. she loves emails and will talk to you about anything. ABSOLUTELY loves the Beatles! if i could, i would choose her for every english class i take.
Dr. Bird is an interesting professor. She is a VERY tough grader. I worked my butt off to get a B+ in her class. MAKE SURE YOU DO ALL THE REWRITES!!
I really enjoyed this class and greatly enjoyed the instructor. It was interesting, helpful and I thought the assignments were different from some of my other classes.
LOVED having her as a teacher. She is so fun and has a great attitude. Besides learning how to write well, she always has some life lessons to share. I would take her for every English class if possible. One of the BEST teachers i have ever had. Be sure to go to her class, attendance is mandatory but it definitely helps!
Professor Bird is an overall good person, but a screwball of a teacher. Her idea of teaching is doing group projects the entire class, with little to no explanation of why we're doing it. Lots of busywork as well. I felt like i was in third grade. She also doesn't clarify why she corrects what she corrects. Her style of writing is crazy hard.
Hey--I have really enjoyed this class. She breaks up the writing assignments with some interesting in class stuff and I like it. Good prof.
I reaally liked Mrs. Bird. we did a lot of work in her class, but it was for the good. I learned a great deal.
Bird was great. She is a hard marker and the workload is huge (sometimes) but it was fun. I think I learned a lot. The assignments were different, not boring. That helped. She is also funny.
I really like Prof. Bird. She was interesting and very helpful. I woudl take her class again.
Relatively easy grader, weekly writing assignments, many of them are in-class, so it isn't smart to skip class very often. Brings humor to her lectures and keeps the atmosphere light. My only problem with her is that sometimes she seems like the type of professor who only likes things done her way. But overall, good!
Professor Bird does a lot of in class group work You HAVE to show up for every single class or you will fail the class. she gives a lot of random points and does put grades on vspace so you never really know what you have She lets you rewrite all of your papers but does not really make you improve I dont think i would take her again but not awful
I thought Professor Bird was great. She reviewed my work outside of class when I would give it to her and that helped me learn what I could do to improve my writing. I wasn't much interested in doing lots of writing, but I thought her assignments were pretty interesting. She was upbeat, too, which helps during a long semester. Enjoyed it.
I really like Prof. Bird. I think she is funny and she also knows her stuff. I am working very hard but I like going to class.
fun! prof loves and encourages eating and head bobbing to music. minor weekly assignments but it does all add up. no exams and final is taken a week early in class. very upbeat and funny. answers Qs clearly but do not be late! loves to joke around, great class. &OH you do need all of the texts
I really enjoy Prf. Bird. She has a good sense of humor which you don't see very much. Learned lots.
There is no doubt this class involved a great deal of writing and lots of work. At the end of it all, I felt I had accomplished so much--thanks in great part--to Bird and her classroom. Really, really loved this class.
She is such a good teacher. She really cares about whether students pass or fail and even gives a chance for rewrites on ALL papers in the class. You can use the notes on the exam too. If you have a sense of humor, this is the class for you because she likes to make it fun!
Professor Bird is a GREAT teacher. She cares about the students and makes lecture interesting. I actually looked forward to coming to English class. Her writing style can be difficult, but you should adjust easily. Just make sure you do EVERY newspaper log and paper and you will have no problem passing the class. A+ Professor!
she is by far my favorite professor !!! she makes it easy to learn and get assignments done on time tells u exactaly what u need to know she is hilarous !!!
Professor Bird is probably one the best English professors I've had in my entire life. No one has been as clear as she has and my writing has never been better. I'd jump at the opportunity to take her again.
Horrible. DO NOT TAKE HER!
I think Professor Bird was excellent. Sure we had to work hard but we are college students, right? The papers were interesting and I appreciate she gave us the chance to do the work. You had to show up on time and do the homework. But it was worth it and my writing has improved. Thanks, Bird.
I enjoyed her class each week. Very lively and some different kinds of papers. We had a pretty active class and I looked forward to being there.
If you are taking this class for an A, do NOT take her! She is so set in her ways and has here mind up about your grade before you finish the class. She is not helpful over email, and that is the only way she communicates. I've never worked so hard in a class and I even went to the writing center. I recommend never taking this woman.
I really enjoyed Professor Bird's class. I am glad I took her. REally liked the Pay It Forward projects.
There were a few papers that took some work, but we were given lots of time to complete them. Necessary in-class sessions to proofread drafts- easy way to earn points and learn how to make it an A paper. Weekly small assignments that can easily boost grade if needed. Helps you learn APA format easily. She's funny, sassy, unique, a little abrasive.
A lot of busy work in this class, that being said, if you do all the work you will get a good grade. A few big papers that you are given a lot of time to complete and a couple small assignments each week. Do all the rewrites! Buy all books, you will use them all. Professor Bird is awesome and wants her students to learn from their mistakes.
She was tough at times, but clear with what she wanted to see in the papers. Textbooks and assignments all have a overall theme of relating to life, which was interesting. She was also wicked funny. Definitely would take again.
Absolutely loved Marianne. You must get used to her humor, once you do - she is fricken hilarious. Do not get on her bad side. Absolutely NO phones in class. Weekly news articles due (find an article and write 3 paragraphs). The whole class is about different life lessons, which is super cool. Hard grader, but really a kind woman
You have so many notes to take each week, which she grades, but you don't know how she is grading them so you might think your notes look good and make sense to you, but they probably won't be long enough to her. You have to do weekly newslogs and she doesn't provide a rubric so she just hands out grades. I would not take her ever again.
I really liked Professor Bird. She had a great sense of humor and class was always fun. That being said, it was a tough class and she made us work hard. 2-3 assignments due a week (most are just 3 paragraph assignments) You must show up on time and be at class. 5% of your overall grade is taken for every class you miss. Need all texts
Always stayed after to answer all my questions. Responds quickly to email which is nice. Really enjoyed the different assignments. Very good.
Each week you have notes and a news log due. The grading is completely random and you will get a 5/10 for missing 2 commas. Allows you to do rewrites on most assignments but only gives you 1 or 2 points. She is a very nice person but I wouldn't take her again due to the grading. She gives you a set number and thats what you get on every assignment.
I loved this class and will miss Professor Bird. She made a tough subject for me interesting. She was always helpful and I liked that. Really interesting assignments and I enjoyed the books we had to read. Very good class. Would recommend her highly.
I almost dropped her class the first few weeks because I thought she was way too tough. Once the semester goes on, she softens up a bit. I will miss her, she is hilarious and sarcastic. Not gonna lie, her class is not an easy A. There is a lot of homework due every single week. Also, you cannot skip ONE class, attendance is mandatory.
Marianne is very stuck in her ways when it comes to grades and refuses to work with her students in any way to change their grade. She is very rude but calls it "humor". Tells you all her assignments count towards your grade but counts only the big essays. Also every "test" is based on your opinion but is graded. Don't take her if you don't have to
This was a great semester. I usually don't like English classes but this was something different. The papers were about relevant things in our lives. She gave us rewrites and was easy to talk to. She really helped me out and I am glad she took the time. We had a good class which also made it fun
This was a great class. I enjoyed the papers we wrote and coming to class each time. She was funny but very helpful reading my papers. Also let us do rewrites.
I would recommend not taking this class, but if you have to good luck.
U turn in newspaper logs and reflections every Thursday on top of essays. Her grading is horrible. It is impossible to get an A, she will look over ur papers for you, but I had her look over one of my papers then I took it to the writing center to still only get a B. If u can get out of her class I recommend do it. Also she lets you rewrite papers.
The work we had to do each week wasnt hard. It was her grading that was HORRIBLE. You mostly turn in your work on Thursdays, but if you miss one class its 5% off from your overall grade. This is the most time consuming English class I have ever taken and it is not the homework that is time consuming but it was me revising my papers.
WE had a lot of writing but it really prepared me for my other classes, too. She took time to review my work and kept in touch with us regularly. She also had a good sense of humor which helps. It was a heavy workload but this is college and she always responded to my emails. i appreciated that.
No clear grading criteria if you fix the thing she wants she will mark points off for another thing. The work wasnt hard, but the way she grades is terrible. Worst English 111 prof at SVSU.
Good, tough class. She was always willing to answer my questions, in person and especially over email. I liked the variety of the assignments and thought the class was pretty interesting.
If you are reading this to see if you should take this prof. DO NOT TAKE HER. You will get a much better grade with another English 111 prof. If you are stuck with her good luck, always show up to class, dont be late, dont have your phone out, and ALWAYS do rewrites. The only good thing about this course was she lets you do rewrites.
I really liked her and the class. The books and the videos were very good and I enjoyed them. Some of the papers were hard but she let us do rewrites so that helped. Learned a lot.
Didnt use canvas and didnt tell us how she would grade our papers. Very hard to get the grade you want.
I liked our class even though we met pretty early in the morning. I liked the books she used and the papers we wrote. She always answered my questions and took the time to read through my papers before they were due. She scheduled us into the writing center and that was another place we could go for help if we wanted. I thought she was great.
At first I hated the class and professor but as the semester went on I enjoyed the class. You write many papers and it gets a bit stressful towards the end of the semester when writing multiple papers at a time. She is a tough grader for each assignment but allows rewrites. ATTENDANCE MATTERS!! If you miss even one class it lowers your grade.
HORRIBLE WORST PROF IVE EVER HAD
I have read a lot of things but I really liked her style. Very down to earth and always willing to help me with my papers. That really made a difference for me in another one of my classes. I thought she was great and had a very good sense of humor. That helps. It was a good class.
I really liked her and the class.
Looked over my papers before I turned them in and she would give me them back with things to fix, I would fix everything and still get so much points knocked off. Seems nice, but I would not recommend.
Professor Bird is a good professor. Not many lectures, but you need and will have to read the textbooks and write notes on them. Tests are easy and she always replies to emails. Her grading criteria can be confusing but you have to go to her for clarification. NO PHONES in class and every class you miss is 5% off your grade, so go to class!
Professor Bird was nice and made it clear what was needed to be done while in the classroom. After we went online due to COVID-19 she was not very responsive to emails. All of her grades were in a paper book so I never knew what my grade was and had to ask specifically for it.
I loved the material in this class not the professor. Get ready to feel uncomfortable every time you walk into class. Mrs Bird is not the most friendly lady and will try to embarrass you and make you feel intimidated by her. The best you can do is follow the rules and do the homework. Dont expect to get an A and dont expect to ever satisfy her.
Bird was truly a horrible beginning to my college experience. I wish I could say more about her as a professor, and I know that she was really stressed from online stuff, but oh my god this class exhausts every student. The grading rubrics are completely unclear and hard to follow. I feel like she probably was a better prof w/out technology.
She really set the tone in her class when within the first week she told all of us none of us would pass her class with an A. I had been an all A student in high school and am more than willing to work hard in a class, and let me tell you she did not care. She never responds to emails and is so late on grading. I would avoid her class at all costs.
Tell me how I can get As in hard biology and math classes, but not this class. She is the worst grader ever and is so stubborn. AVOID HER ANS TRY TO TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!
Even though we wrote many papers and got hit with the online halfway through, I really enjoyed the class and I liked the fact she let us redo our work. I also thought she had a great sense of humor.
easy assignments
She has a very odd sense of humor and a bit of a chaotic course schedule, but if you put in the effort you can easily pass her class. Make sure to check on the comments she leaves on your papers and correct them of future papers. Never use the word "that" in any papers or she will mark you down for it.
I thought we had a good class even with Covid. She was very lenient when people got sick or had to not show up due to covid testing or being in quarantine. i would take her again.
I was a bit confused at times what she expected of us. However, the class was very easy overall. Just do the work and you will pass. None of the papers took me over an hour and a half, most of them only about 15 minutes.
Extremely tough grader. Very rude to students. Claims her class is an easy A- it's not. Doesn't have clear grading criteria. If you don't write in her style it's not good enough. Gets her schedule mixed up and then blames students for it. Her class was mentally exhausting
Quite possibly the most ridiculous class I've ever taken. Grading across assignments is wildly inconsistent. I currently have 3 A's and an F in ENGL 111 since grades are entered as 0s even though I've resubmitted all assignments multiple times. When resubmitted, assignments are entered as different grades than marked or as 0's outright. DO NOT TAKE
it was a pandemic so some things were hard but she got our stuff back to us which i really liked she was also fun had some neat videos good class
horrible.
Most of the papers you write are short or she gives you a good amount of time to write them. You pick the topic for most of them. Most of all the work is done outside of class. You could skip class, but it goes toward your grade. She makes jokes and it was a fun and easy going class. Would take again.
Shes a good person. If your assignments arent wrote the way she wants them to be wrote youre going to fail. If you use the words had or that youre going to get points marked down. There were two tests and the final exam and if you pay attention to the topic youll pass easily. But they dont count much for your final grade.
i loved this class and looked forward to tuesdays and thursdays. would take her again.
Papers are easy as long as you pay attention to margins, even if you don't she allows re-writes. If you show up to class and do the work you will be fine. The class is funny, make sure you know the Beatles and Godfather.
I was scared at first it seems like a lot, but if you do the work you will get a good grade. Allows rewrite for almost everything.
do the rewrites! talk to her if you need any help, she was very understanding with me this semester. dont be nervous about your grades at first your final grade will most likely go up (my grade went up 10%) dont be nervous if you have her. get ready for some cheesy jokes tho.
At first I wasn't sure about her class but stick through it she was truely one of my favorite proffesors.
She is a very harsh grader, although if you do try in the class your english will be improved times ten. Homework due every other class. Not a bad teacher, just has very high expectations.
She's a great English professor, and allows rewrites for almost every paper. She's super nice and I enjoyed the class. She likes to joke around a lot, and as long as you show up to class and complete every assignment it's a very manageable class.
She was fair and expected the best from us. I truly enjoyed the class. There was a lot of work but that's the point. We had a fun group.
After the first couple weeks of class her average on assignments was around 50-60%. Her hand writing on papers she grades looks like she just scribbled on the paper. This makes it impossible to correct your next assignment to align with her way of writing. If I could switch professors right now i would do anything to do so. Avoid at all costs!
We do a lot of writing in this class but she is fair and fun to listen to. That helps. I also like our assignments. We get to write about what we want. I enjoy her class and hope to be able to take her again
I wasn't sure at the beginning but I really loved the class. I like the books she used and the papers we wrote. She let us pick the topics and we wrote papers in sections so we did not get overwhelmed. She was very helpful and I learned a lot in her class. Would take her again.
Honestly she is a very tough grader but she gives good feedback to I prove over the semester. She often tells stories in class and there is not a lot of tests or quizzes. There is quite a bit of homework and not doing them would definitely cause you to fail the class.
I think this class is a blast. She is really funny but also interesting. She has helped me by looking over my work. She also is letting us rewrite the bigger papers which is good. I like her and would recommend her/
Bird was a great teacher. I liked her style and sense of humor. We had a couple of really good books and I actually enjoyed the papers we wrote. I would highly recommend her.
Grades fairly but tough. She is unclear with what she wants most of the time. Make sure you bring your sense of humor and know the Beatles. Papers galore.
Not sure what to expect but I really liked her and the class at the end. We read quite a bit but I liked that she let us pick the topics for our papers. It was lots of work but I liked how the schedule was put together for us and her flexibility.
I thought she was great. I enjoyed going to her class.
Great personality KEEP IT GROOVY
I have enjoyed her class very much.
lliked going to class and the insructor. she was helpful and understanding.
Some students find Bird to be weird, but I just found her behavior as comedic. She tells students exactly what she wants out of the bigger papers and does lots of prep in class which helps a lot. On the contrary, her smaller assignments are graded harshly until you understand exactly what she's looking for. If you put in the work u get an A
Going to class wasnt necessary. she made it necessary for points even though share barely taught anything in class. unclear explanations on due dates/ assignments. barely knows how to use canvas and unclear email responses. she also requires every assignment to be printed out or handwritten. very wasteful with the amount of work we submit weekly.
I really liked the professor's class. I will be trying to take her for 212 next term.
our class meets on mondays and wednesdays and i really look forward to them . It seems like every time is a surprise. She is helpful and easy to talk to. I am hoping I can take one of her classes again.
Professor Bird's ENG111 class is a rewarding challenge. Her direct feedback and flexible assignments help students improve. I found unstuck AI a helpful study tool alongside the free textbook. Attendance is a must, but the engaging lectures make it worthwhile.
Could get very strict at certain points but was overall very funny. If you did the work, you would pass. Although, in my opinion, there was a lot of busy work.
In the beginning, she is easy to dislike and has a very strict attendance policy. Using your phone in class can get you kicked out and she will pick apart any flaw in your writing. Perfect scores are rare but once you learn what she wants out of your writing things get a lot easier. She's strict but fair and very funny. Maybe a little unhinged.
Doesn't agree with correct English formatting. She will mark you wrong for using big vocabulary or not writing in the way she writes.
Class was never boring. She has a mixed bag of common-sense and literally insane takes, but she's undeniably funny + kind. She is experienced with writing, NOT tech-savvy, and honestly wants you to succeed. You will have to learn how to write her way, but you can do a lot of rewrites w/o penalty. The time is not 'the time', it's 'the Bat-Time'.
Never a dull moment with Bird. Great books, too.
She is a tough grader, but she allows for rewrites on papers. Bring an extra copy of your paper to the peer review sessions and she will peer review it for you, which is basically a pre-grade! She is very kind and cares about her students' success. Overall, she is a hilarious and kind woman. Show up to class, do the work, and you will be fine.
