So Smart! Great teacher!
She knows her stuff!!
I took this class over Christmas. Attendance was a major thing. There were no exams but a lot of writing and she is pretty picky about the quality of it. But I really liked her and the class.
Great Prof! Attendance required because she gives pop quizzes but she lets you use your notes! (Not hard) You get a 3x5 note card for each exam and she gives you a full study guide. Classes are kinda boring because she just reads the powerpoints and there a ton of info but really not that bad. Offers tons of extra credit too! Overall, awesome prof.
Super awesome and fun teacher! I was in her class for hour and half lecture and she made the sections super fun! Hard class but and lots of pop quizzes but there is so much extra credit available that I ended up with a 108%
This class was awesome! Very interesting material, prof encourages a lot of discussion! Very easy to work with, a lot of material is covered-but go to class cuz there are quizzes..but you get to use notes. Take good notes. You also get a notecard for each test. Very reasonable-TONS of extra credit! loved it..taking another class from her in spring
Seriously awesome teacher, definitely knows her stuff and has made my 3 hour long night class interesting!!
Great Prof! Pop quizes but you get to use your notes (and sometimes you just check your name on a list and get quiz points). Provides all powerpoints (just need to print them out). Get 3.5x5 notecard on every test. TONS of extra credit! Definitely recommend. She really knows her stuff and makes class fun. Lots of class discussion but it's not bad.
This course was very easy online. The prof. was really helpful, available, and flexible. Great class!
She is the best professor ever. she makes the class interesting and she is absolutely hilarious. you learn so much from the class and she makes you want to come to class. test are easy as long as you study for it and she offers a ton of extra credit
I love her political incorrectness! Great instructor. TA is also great.
I love this professor! She is funny, engaging, energetic, and very good at explaining the criminal justice system while making you think. 3 tests and attendance isn't mandatory, but I would recommend going for notes. She likes when students are willing to participate in the discussion! Would recommend! I haven't been reading and have an A so far...
One of the best classes I have taken! Professor Hudson is funny, engaging, and a bit inappropriate. She keeps her discussions relevant and loves hearing peoples opinion. Don't get offended if she disagrees with you during discussion, she's usually just playing devil's advocate. Take advantage of the study sessions and materials.
Course CJS 103. Proff is down to earth and engaging with the class (sometimes going off on tangents.) She is reasonable and the class is simple. She has vast knowledge of basic law and contextualizes it really well for 100 level understanding. Not in depth at all unfortunately, and a lot of extra credit revolves around being a sports fan.
She is awesome! She really makes you interested in the material and teaches it very "real world"-ly. Have hardly used the book at all, all the notes are given to you and most (if not all) the material covered on the exams are in the notes. She also gives a study guide before each exam. 3x5 notecards are also allowed as long as you don't mess it up!
In contrast to others, I felt she was incredibly hard to deal with. Not impressed with her at all
BEST PROFESSOR AT BOISE STATE. Makes the class fun and tells great stories. TONS OF EXTRA CREDIT!
She tries a little too hard to be funny and relatable, and comes off like a liquored up aunt who wants to be your BFF. I can see how some students think she's awesome, but to me it was just plain annoying. Easy A, though. Oh, and some really good guest speakers.
she makes the class super interesting and fun and has great stories. make sure to take her class during the fall so you get TONS of extra credit when the seahawks win. her tests are easy but her essays are super hard. make sure you read ALL the instructions even though they are 5 pages long and do everything she wants to get a good grade.
Horrible. Won't think outside the box on anything. If it is not in the textbook do not even think about it. Supremely difficult tests. Online schedule very difficult for people with jobs. Extra credit for sports stuff (Seahawks). Terribly unprofessional and wrong for a university setting. i will never take a CJ class again cause of her.
Marianne is a fantastic professor. Probably one of the best professors I've ever had. She is so passionate about law and how it applies in the societal realm. Her lectures are so interesting, even to someone who doesn't find law very fun or exciting. Try to take her class in the fall, as she's an avid SeahawkBronco fan that gives EC on the outcome
Good and interesting teacher. Gives lectures over the powerpoints each and every class period. Tests are taken at home at on the computer. Tests are not too bad and the powerpoints contain most of the answers to the questions on the tests. She loves to give pop quizzes, so be prepared for those but you can use the notes on them. DON'T BE LATE!
I loved her and this class. She is hilarious and makes the class very interesting. Tons of extra credit but if you don't go to class you won't pass. She is my absolute favorite professor I have had a BSU
Marianna is a complete BA! She's so funny, and I personally think she makes her lectures very interesting. Exams are online, so you can use your notes and your textbook. She provides "chapter handouts" for you so you don't have to take that much notes. Gives random attendance quizzes, and pop quizzes but lets you use notes! Love her.
She kind of seems intimidating, but she's hilarious and I genuinely enjoyed her lectures. She also gives a lot of extra credit, especially in the fall during football season. Tests are easy, because they're open book. Just don't be late or you will miss out on points and get called out.
She definitely knows her stuff, and she's pretty funny. Quizzes are pretty easy- she usually gives you a few minutes with your notes to finish them. Tests are straightforward- read the book & you'll do well. Writing assignments are to read a book and submit 3 'summary & analysis' papers throughout the semester. She's a stickler for APA format.
By far the greatest professor I have ever had! She is SO funny in her lectures, an awesome teacher, and gives tons of extra credit. If you like the seahawks, she'll love you. Make sure to write down all of the Seahawk's scores for extra credit!
Such a good teacher and is very interesting and funny. She gives open note quizzes once a week or every other week but with extra credit on them. She is super blunt and witty and it is a very entertaining class. I would take more classes with her.
Hudson puts herself in your shoes. She provides an outline of each chapter and powerpoints. This is helpful so you are able to LISTEN to her extremely relatable lectures, instead of writing like mad to keep up. Her knowledge of the materials is of the highest caliber. Her expectations are clear and will force you participate during class. Love her!
Marianne is the BEST PROFESSOR EVER. She is hilarious, gives lots of extra credit (especially if you like the Seahawks), and does an awesome job at teaching. Expect pop quizzes often, so skipping isn't recommended. She also randomly chooses days to take attendance. Tests are taken on your own time and open notes. Overall best professor ever!
Seems very intimidating at first but she is very straight forward and direct, lots of extra credit for just showing up and and on quizzes. Pop quizzed once a week but you get notes however it is a short amount of time and shouldn't rely on notes. Tests are difficult but there are only 2 aside from final. Just don't skip class and study often
Great teacher, seems intimidating at first. She is actually REALLY funny. Pop quizzes every week but allowed to use notes. Tests are open note but still study for the tests as if they are not open note. Do NOT rely on just reading off the notes. Offers a lot of extra credit. Everyday we have class she says something that makes everyone laugh.
She is super fun and entertaining. Very good at explaining material. Loves the Seahawks and gives lots of extra credit opportunities including attendance quizzes.
This was by far the worst class I had taken this semester. Maybe cause it was online, but it was not enjoyable. Her grading outline is unclear and she is the worst on citing. At first I thought I was taking an english class not a CJ class. Even the writing center couldn't help me. She does give lots of extra credit though.
Professor Hudson was one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is tough on her classes in terms of attendance and classroom rules, but she is a great teacher. She gives tons of extra credit, which makes up for the daily/weekly quizzes. Her tests were open-note on blackboard. I suggest printing out the powerpoints because she goes pretty fast.
Super funny and knows her stuff. She seems pretty mean at first, but she's just strict. She can seem a little snooty at times, but she really knows what she's talking about. Take her in person rather than online, though. I failed my online class with her, but did really well with her this semester in person.
Took her class online over summer (three week course). The first week every day an assignment was due and would grade them at the end of the week to post it on black board. She grades heavy on APA format. If you have a good grasp on that format, you'll be fine. She did however have a good amount of extra credit on sports teams if they won or lost.
Hudson is absolutely amazing, she is absolutely hilarious and makes the class fun to go to and look forward to. There are many pop quizzes throughout the semester but you can use the book and power points to complete it, there are 3 exams that you take on your own time. Even if you're not a CJ major I would recommend this class for the experience!
Professor Hudson is awesome and HILARIOUS. She loves football (Seahawks, specifically), so sometimes she would give us free extra credit just because her team won. Lectures are easy because she gives you the PowerPoint outlines on BlackBoard. Tests are tough, but they are taken online at home so you can use your notes. Would highly recommend!
She seems really intimidating at first, but I feel like it's all a front for the first week. She really knows her stuff and will take extra time making sure you understand. Make sure you print out her handouts beforehand because she will quiz you on the content of those. There's usually a quiz every class but you can use your notes.
Requires 2 papers & will skip the 2nd one if she hasn't graded the first one on time. APA NAZI - not even kidding. Blamed for plagiarism when every sentence was cited unless it was my own words. She does give tons of extra credit so when you fail the paper it helps make up for it. Tests are about 1 minute per question so you better study.
Quizzes are easy but she would obviously rather be an English professor than a CJ professor. She loves to charge people with plagiarism if you don't follow her list of over 100 rules to follow for writing assignments. I cited every sentence in a paper and was still accused of plagerising and I'm not the only one who has had this problem with her.
DROWNING IN APA. It felt impossible to cite exactly how she wanted. It felt more like an English class than a CJ class. I actually was so submersed in APA format nonsense that I don't remember much of the content for the course.
Not nice at all. She's acts like she rules the world when she's just another bsu instructor with only a masters.
Professor Hudson is an incredibly unique person. Aside from all the football related EC and strictness, she is really a great teacher. Her expectations are high, but also very clear. She is accessible in office hours and understanding of conflicts but also sticks by her rules of attendance. CJ was a great course and she made it accessible. Loved it
She can be very stern and intimidating at first, but she is extremely intelligent and knows the material backwards and forwards. Gives great lectures and didn't assign any homework for CJ 103 (grades were attendance, quizzes and tests) As long as you pay attention and show up to class on time you will do well.
Professor Hudson is very intelligent and it shows. She gives insane opportunities for extra credit and all exams are open note and book. You can tell she's passionate about the subject. However, being late means you miss quizzes and she is strict about this policy. If you respect her, she respects you. Her class is wonderful.
Very intelligent teacher. Show up and you will get a good grade. Don't be late, she will call you out. Good personality. Lots of extra credit.
Hella Quizzes
Professor Hudson is an amazing teacher who is very passionate about criminal justice. She is always cracking jokes and is very easy to talk to. Her style of teaching makes you look forward to class and she does a great job of making sure everyone understands her instructions and what is expected. There are open note quizzes almost every day.
Dr. Hudson is one of the toughest graders I've had at Boise State. Make sure you are asking lots of questions and reading her syllabus thoroughly! She will dock you points for not properly citing the textbook, and accuse you of plagiarism. Make sure to not forget her first email assignment because this is heavily weighted.
She is a super intense teacher. If your camera is off on zoom, she won't hesitate to call you out. She is super intense in general, but her lecture classes are great. She lets us all discuss and reply to each others comments in class and she never cuts us off early.
Grade is a sum of weekly quizzes, exams, and attendance, but tons of extra credit. Lectures every class but quizzes/exams are straight from textbook. I would NOT take her again because she is intense and does not foster a learning environment. She is knowledgeable but very opinionated, rude, and states her opinion as fact. Do not recommend her.
Her lectures are very fun to sit in, but her personality is an acquired taste. I took her class when we switched to online courses because of the pandemic, and she just threw the book at us. She barely contacted us other than to give us quizzes. She gives you lots of extra credit BUT that is only if her sports teams win. I would not recommend.
Taken completely online (COVID) but I really enjoyed her classes! Thorough slideshows for each chapter and thorough exam study sheets. DO NOT just lurk in class online and it is best to keep your camera on. She is very interactive with students and chat in Zoom but DO NOT turn your cam off and have class playing in the background or she WILL know.
Prof. Hudson did zero teaching in this class. Any assignments we had were based solely off the textbook, with no supplementary teaching or material from the professor. Any grading feedback I received was 100% about APA formatting; no feedback about content was given.
Great professor. She makes lectures enjoyable. About one quiz per week on BB. Go to the zooms or you will lose points. Offers a lot of extra credit based on her sports teams winning. The questions on the quizzes and exams come straight out of the textbook.
Has a 200+ bullet point editing list and will grade ridiculously hard. Consistently accuses plagiarism even when you cite the book and use your own words. This class is not about learning - it is about regurgitating the textbooks without being able to use words from the textbook. Worst professor I have ever had.
Marianne Hudson acts like her 100 level class is a graduate level course. Grades super hard and does not provide clear instructions. When I reached out and shared my frustrations she was highly condescending and did not clarify. Graded papers are covered in so many red marks she may have murdered someone on it, takes off points for minor mistakes.
Prof. Hudson is a very opinionated and strong-willed professor. The book is required but I did not open it once and passed with a very high grade easily, I don't recommend spending the money on it, especially if this is not your major, just for credit. There are weekly quizzes just whenever she wants, but she does give a lot of sports extra credit.
Mrs. Hudson is super funny and very respected. I took her class online and realized that attendance MATTERS. show up to the zoom and you will pass. she gives lots of extra credit and very few assignments. she is tough though, so follow her syllabus and you will get a good grade. overall would reccomend.
The worst grading system ever. There are no assignments, just attendance taken every day, based on whether she thinks you are listening or not. I've taken the class twice.
She is not nice and will not allow you to join the class if you are even a few seconds late. She is a weird grader with only quizzes and exams and attendance being counted. The extra credit is really nice though
There were no assignments so the grades relied on just quizzes/tests. The two assignments she has are the chapter q&a's. I did it completely wrong because I didn't realize that the assignment directions were buried in the syllabus. That assignment was due the first week of September and I just received my grade for it on the last week of November.
Marianne Hudson does not have a good attitude in lecture. She does not respond well if you ask questions so, be warned. She acts as if you are unintelligent if you ask a question. Not a conducive learning environment whatsoever. The class itself is fairly easy if you attend class regularly, do the quizzes, and study for the tests.
Very rude professor. Whenever I would email her asking a simple question her response was always rude and disrespectful. Her class was fairly easy consisting of mostly quizzes and exams. Gives lots of extra credit.
This professor is extremely rude and disrespectful when answering emails involving questions about the class or for help with assignments. It took her a very long time to grade the first Q&A and gave me my grade a day before grades were due, the feedback that I received on this assignment was insulting and made zero sense.
I would never take a class with this professor again. The only reason I received a decent grade in her class was because of the extra credit. The questions on quizzes and exams are so specific that unless you memorize every chapter you won't know what's going on and I got my grades back on assignments only days before final grades were due.
extremely rude, I completed. a email assignment which she said she did not receive even after providing screenshots she only gave me partial credit
I didn't expect to have to teach myself all of the material through the textbook. Literally, all quiz/exam questions are word for word from the book. Marianne hasn't graded the first assignment, so she decided to cancel the other. Im not sure how she grades since I have never received feedback from her. She offers a lot of extra credit though...
She was a great professor. She gives a lot of extra credit. Although, all her tests and quizzes are word for word from textbooks so keep that in mind.
She seemed to be very knowledgeable in the realm of Criminal Justice, but she did not do a good job at all of getting it across. Very strict on being on time to class but gives out full letter grades of Extra Credit? The lectures were just reading off of slides pulled out of the textbook, and the important definitions aren't even in the slides.
Professor Hudson is very disrespectful and rude. She grades only on APA format, nothing to with the content. She gives no beneficial feedback and will not answer your questions. She is so rude.
CJ 311***** This class was fairly difficult and time consuming considering I took it as a 3 week course, but it was pretty enjoyable. She gives very detailed feedback, and you can email her your assignments early for her to grade so you can redo them and get 100%. Love her!
CJ 203**** For an online class I really liked it. I was able to send her my papers before submitting them and I was given feedback that was really useful in making them the best they could be. I recommend taking this professor.
Worst professor I've ever had. She acts like her students are problems and is unwilling to help them. I took her class during COVID and she was so unhelpful and rude. I usually get A's but she made me get a C because of her lack of instructions, tough grading and her attendance quizzes which require you to make every class regardless of your life.
TAKE THIS CLASS. The tests are online and open book. She seems strict at first, but we SO much extra credit for doing nothing. If her favorite sports teams and BSU teams win, you get points. I had a 107% in the class after getting a 76% on a test that dropped my grade to a C. So that should tell you something. Take this for an easy A.
I love her! She teaches really well. No busywork just quizzes every other week and the tests are online and open book. She's just strict about being on time to class. pop quizzes don't count towards your grade, she just uses them to take attendance. She's hilarious too. Wish I could have her every semester for every class lol.
Overall great class, the lectures are explained well and if you pay attention you will do fine in the class. She gives SO MUCH extra credit!!!! The extra credit is worth taking the class in itself. The only thing is she is very big on attendance, if you show up 30 seconds late you do not get attendance for the day. But I would highly recommend!
Attendance is your most important grade. Don't bother showing up if you're gonna be late, no attendance counted after class starts. All tests are open note. If you're not taking this course for your major, just put it in your airpods and work on other assignments during lecture. Gives out extra credit when her sports teams win. Easy A class.
I love Marianne! Her class was easy and super interesting, inspiring me to study Criminal Justice. Just don't be late, come prepared, and participate...it's hard to fail! She also gives extra credit for sports as long as the Seahawks and Mariners are doing well and not the 40-whiners. I highly highly recommend her class!
Professor Hudson is a very fair teacher. Late for class, don't show up. Attendance is mandatory but gives great lectures and Lots of extra credit. Graded heavily on attendance but only unproctored quizzes and tests on canvas. As long as you show up on time, do your little bit of work, and don't like the 49ers, you WILL get an A+.
She's very, very strict in a traditional way - attendance is important and if you walk in one second late she will call you out, every time. The score you get on tests and assignments is very final, but you always get 2 attempts. No projects for this class, just tests and quizzes. They are on content learned in class and can be random so TAKE NOTES
She's incredibly rude, don't take her class unless you want to feel unsupported.
A stickler for time and does not like tardiness! Be on time and ready to learn, because this professor is the best lecturer and most obviously gifted at teaching I have encountered. You will not be bored even though this is a lecture heavy course. Cannot recommend enough, just show up 5-10 early every time!
very good and thorough with lecture content, attendance is mandatory but as long as you actually go you will for sure pass the class, she is very funny and interactive with class. very real in explaining content. I enjoyed this class.
I absolutely loved Marianne! But she isn't for everyone, if you're someone who is more sensitive to swearing or brash remarks then I would avoid her lectures. Personally, I found her lectures very engaging and interesting. There were no assignments due except quizzes, so the workload was very light, and extra credit was given often!
She was a pretty good professor. Used a lot of personal stories to get student's attention and help understand it. Takes attendance every day and will call you out if you're even a few seconds late. Every class is a lecture with quizzes afterwords. Online finals. The online quizzes/finals have answers to questions that aren't even right. Easy class
She is the worst instructor I have ever had over my four years in college. I have never been more stressed over a class because of her impossible grading criteria that makes 0 sense. If I wanted to take an English class I would've. I would never recommend anybody take her class unless they enjoy being degraded and judged for every ounce of work.
Incredibly unprofessional. Harsh grader, works on her own time, never grades in a timely manner. I needed an assignment graded quickly as it was for her final paper, yet she didn't bother to grade it until 2 days before the final was due. Judgy, rude, and just plain egotistical. I wouldn't wish this treatment on anyone.
SHE IS STRAIGHT UP INSUFFERABLE. I had spontaneous retinal detachment in both of my eyes and missed a test due to emergency surgery. She didn't believe me and required me to Zoom her as proof, on top of a letter from my surgeon (which she got). Didn't want to open my test, but of course did right before I went to the Educational Access Center....
The worst professor, I had in all four years at Boise State. Her grading tactics are ridiculous. She also has a tendency to grade papers off a scale. That makes no sense in all four years, I never struggled with a paper, but failed every single one of hers. not worth taking her online, senior seminar, find a different professor. l
Worst professor I've had. Her grading criteria is unclear, and doesn't given good feedback. Nor does her feedback come in a timely manner, she was still grading 2nd week assignments after the class was technically over. I've never recieved such bad grades on papers before. Everything has to be in her specific APA formatting.
There are 14 quizzes and one writing assignment. Quizzes are straight from the textbook, and the writing assignment was not too bad but she only cared about grammar and not actual content... Get ready for impoliteness and 0 interaction with people or content. The only good thing was that she gave a bunch of extra credit for her sports teams winning
One of the harshest graders and it does it in a degrading way. I know multiple people she tried to fail after graduation. DO NOT TAKE
Marianne Hudson is an unmistakably clear example of a professor who prioritizes projecting an image of intellectual superiority rather than supporting student learning. What was most disappointing was the complete lack of humility or self-awareness. Her disrespectful responses/critiques implied any viewpoint other than her own was inferior.
