very easy class if your are prepared for your speech
By far the most incompetent professor I have encountered to date. The notes comprise on average 6 mainpoints per day (half a sheet of paper). I've introduced members of Congress. She is no speaker and by far no teacher. Read a book on speech instead.
Avoid this teacher. She appears nice and easy in the beginning, but develops an attitude and preference for certain students. Her assignments involve about forty different overlapping criteria. Its confusing but manageable.Pick someone else if you can.
Appeared very nice, and easy at the beginning of the year. That quickly ends and she takes things to an insane level. Does not help you get any better at speech, does not grade logically, and is a very strict and sometimes insanely harsh grader. Avoid.
As aforementioned Pellechia acts sugary sweet until the first speech rolls around, then comes her list of criteria to be met which is comprised of like 30 items. I think it is literally impossible to make an A on her speeches and especially in the class.
Awesome professor. Unlike what many people have said, she's not strict. She's very down-to-earth and grades accordingly. Many other professors take off points for "umms" and pauses. It is not immposible to get A's, all my speeches but one were A

I am taking her now and she is by far one of the worst teachers I have had in all of my college life. I took this class simply for an easy A in my senior year but boy was I wrong. She is extremely biased and is extremely unclear in her grading. I would definetely advise you to not take her.
I was good at speech before her. I got chosen to be one of her lucky not liked students. Thought she was great at first, then realized she has no idea what shes talking about... not to mention she cannot give a speech at all, and makes weird facial expressions and shakes her head alot!
DO NOT TAKE THIS WOMAN, unless you wanna have living hell for a semester go ahead.
boring
yeah she was really easy. if ur one of the people she likes then ur in. if ur not... well i dont kno what the f*ck u should do. i was def one of her favorites.
Great teacher and a fun class. If you are even somewhat comfortable with public speaking then this class is an easy A. The quizzes are hard, but there are only 2 of them. Final is a take home paper, real easy.
She had no idea what she was talking about and did little to help out her students in thier problem areas. You can study hard and work hard but if she doesn't favor you then there is no hope for getting a good grade.
she seemed nice enough at first, but that soon changed. Does not give make up for speeches and grades difficulty. hard to find a way to get an A
This class was very intresting. It was a business SPCH class. This teache was fairly easy, as long as you did what you had to do in her class, you came out with a good grade.
grading on speechs unclear, very hard to make an A. She has no idea how to give a speech herself and she is a very strange woman. I would avoid her!!
As others have mentioned, it is extremely difficult to make an A in this class if you are not one of her favorites. The bottom line is simple: Mrs. Pellechia takes this class WAY too seriously. Therefore, she grades very tough and her quizzes are ridiculous. Avoid this teacher.
She is a great teacher and I learned a whole lot in her class...but it seems to be really tough to get an A in her class although I did get an A- on one of the speeches. She doesnt even really know how to give speeches but she is very very nice just make sure you dont get on her bad side.
worst teacher ive had in college, way to into public speaking when she is nurvous and sketch while trying to teach. DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER
Unfair Grading!!! She is not very friendly or compassionate about helping students!
Unfair and unclear grader...it is very hard to get an A unless you are one of her favorites. She also has no idea what she is talking about most of the time. I would avoid!
Does not care about anyone's problems and does not care about helping your grade. Don't take her.
She's not that bad a professor. You dont really have to do any of the readings and she gives you all the notes on overheads. The 2 quizzes are take-home and the 3 speeches are not hard either. She tends to repeat herself a lot when she talks. Overall, this class isn't hard at all!
Take her for Speech 230!Only 3 speeches, 2 Take Home Exams, and no final exam!Gives you all of the notes you need to do well and tells you exactly how to prepare for each speech! Easy A as long as you follow all of the requirements!
Wow. What exactly are the grades based on? Taking speech with Pellechia really makes me want to take a vow of silence, and then jump off of a bridge. If possible, find another way to satisfy the degree requirement, I know no one is taking this for pleasure.
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. what everyone is saying about her having favorites is true. i'm an A student but in this class i'm just praying to God that i can manage a C. go to class or ur screwed--although nothing can really help u unless ur her favorite. AVOID AT ALL COST, if not please, please be her favorite.
Wow she is definitely an interesting woman. I consider myself a very good public speaker and she shot me down about stuff that she does herself. She contradicts everything she teaches and grades horribly. I certainly would not recommend her, but she's not the end of the world!
No hw, xcept take home quiz(fairly ez) 3 presentations, if ur good to begin w/ & practiced/prepared u'll get around B+ A- but w/ quizzes and interview stuff can pull an A. Don't take if u have little experience public speaking. U will not learn how to present better, not very good at making ur spch skills grow. waste of a class
I wouldn't take this class if I had it to do all over again. She is extremely uptight. Can be nice sometimes, but comes off as uptight and takes it way too seriously! I wouldn't recommend this class if you've never had public speaking. Also looks like at every speaker like their crazy when their speaking...kinda annoying, especially when nervous!
She was nice and offered to look over speaches before you presented them if you gave her a few days. Theres no regular homework, but she can be confusing.
Not really a hard class. She just saps any fun out that could be there. Also she is notoriously unforgiving and you can bank on only getting one shot at anything and not having the chance to appeal anything.
She really isnt that bad. Sometimes she can grade kind of hard and if you have not had any speaking classes before this, dont take her. You dont really learn that much, but if you do your work you will get an A or a B.
AVOID AT AL COSTS!!!! STRICT AS HELL AND DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE STUDENTS!!! DO NOT TAKE!!!!
she's really great. tough class but as long as you are nice to her then she'll be nice back. all notes are on overheads. do what you're told and you'll get far in the class!! the speeches are going to be hard, thats the point of the class. she's not going to sugarcoat anything for you, a real professor.
Seriously, do not take her. If you are going to take speech, take Lawhon. He is so much easier and you will learn more. Pellechia can't even speek well herself, so I have no clue as to how she majored in it. Take Lawhon!!!
if i had not had any previous knowledge of public speaking i would have floundered in the class. there is no chance of compromise in her class and if you mess up once, you're pretty much blackballed. plus, she is boring and thinks way too highly of herself.
Speeches were graded difficultly and the exam questions were challenging. She lets you bring one sheet of notes into each exam so they should be easy. Speeches can be on whatever you wish as long as they are approved.
She wasn't bad at all. Graded a little hard on presentations but if you practice beforehand and followed the formulas she taught, easy B at least. Tests are challenging but it's all from the handouts and you can have a sheet of notes with whatever you want on it!!! EC at end of semester bumps up grade an entire letter for most people.
Nice speech teacher, but is definitely not a freebie class. She makes you work, but you do learn a lot from the lectures. Speeches are easy, you can pick your own topic and grading is easy, I never got below a B. Exams are easy too, one cheat sheet full of notes. Very polite and expects the same of her students. Great class for hard workers.
I hate this teacher with a passion. The way she grades is completely messed up. The tests she gives, each question could have more than one answer. I can't even stand talking to her, because she is not helpful at all, and she tends to interrupt you if you're talking to her. She needs to quit teaching this class for good.
Grades harshly on presentations. Her exam questions are very tricky. She play favorites..if she don't like you..Good Luck!
As previous ratings state, not a gimme class, but I found Pellechia to be very easy to get along with and very willing to help her students. Hard, tricky tests, so study for them. Speeches can seem difficult, but you get a lot out of doing them, and lots of valuable feedback. If I had to do it again, I would choose Pellechia for this class.
terrible.
She's the best! Very down to Earth, and approachable. She does not except junk, and she's very fair! I took her classes as many times as I could. Highly recommended!!!!!!!!
She is an awesome speech professor! Structured class, only 3 speeches, can choose from a very wide range of topics for speeches. Very nice, if you do the work you'll get an A.
very fair and nice. i enjoyed her class. she was also helpful.
Great professor. As previous comments have said, not an easy class but if you put forward some effort (e-mailing her, seeing her doing office hours) you'll get an A. Definitely e-mail her or see her if you want to do well. She loves to help her students who show they want to work. Also, don't miss class. She puts a high value on attendance.
She is a good teacher, very clear in what she wants. Make sure you follow every direction she gives to the last detail because she grades very specificly to her gradesheet
She is awesome!! There are only 3 speeches and it isn't hard to get an A, just pay attention in class and show interest in class
not a bad professor. lots of classroom discussion. graded by attendace, interview assignment, 2 take home exams, peer reviews, only gave 3 speeches. most material is easy but speeches are graded very very critically. it was hard to complete with anxiety issues but what do you expect in a speech class
Without a doubt the worst teacher I had at school. She has no idea how to speak yet she grades so unclearly that you have no hope of getting a good grade. Plays favorites like everyone says. She, and whoever gave her tenure should be fired
She has to be one of the worst teachers I had. Speeches are graded harshly and its an entry level speech class. Class is boring and she is not clear with lectures. She takes attendance daily. She does not use blackboard and does not post grades. She has her own seperate website which is an inconvience. Find another teacher or class. Take SPCH 140.
She is very friendly and caring. She will work with you to help you improve your grade. Only 3 Speeches, a take home final, and one project. The speeches are a little difficult but it's pretty easy to get an A
Ms. Marianne is the best teacher i'd ever had! She is so nice and i learned a lot and a lot in the class. She is clear for what she wants for our presentation. If you do care about the work, you'll get good grades undoubtedly. If you wish to learn how to have good speech, she is the best choice! i love her!!
LOVED THIS PROFESSOR! Even though she is very precious on what she wants and grades strict! Many complain that she isnt fair. Prob did 20-30 hours of research & construction for each speech, but it really helped me improve. Print out her PP's, it tells you exactly what she wants. Lectures are boring & you evaluate presenters. Hard, but good class.
Overall she wasn't bad at all. Three speeches that were OK. She gave clear and detailed instructions of what she wanted. Take home midterm and exam that came right from her slides. If you try you'll be fine. I got an A. Attendance is mandatory.
She is a very nice teacher. The speeches were time consuming, but it is the reason you are in class. She is very particular but clear one what she wants in the speeches. Follow what she tells you and practice the speeches and it is not hard to get an A.
I really enjoyed her class, though at first I wasn't sure. She gave clear guidelines for speeches and grading policies. You have to put work into your speeches and be confident in delivery. Her lecture classes are boring, but if you print her powerpoints you will be fine!
She is extremely clear with what she expects for each speech. Three speeches total. As long as you follow her directions it's a fairly easy A.
Class is definitely difficult. I but a ton of work into all my speeches but in the end it hardly mattered, she actually grades on how well you give the speech. She's not a terrible teacher but she's pretty difficult.
not helpful, follow her templates and get b's. Doesn't clarify anything. plays favorites.
She works very hard to help you learn, and she expects you to reciprocate. Speeches take a lot of time, but if you put in the work, you'll do fine. If you want to actually learn how to speak and act in a business atmosphere, take her. The class is time consuming but not too difficult. Be polite and diligent and you should get an A.
I did what she asked and somehow managed to make an average grade. She is a bad public speaker for a speaking class.
She is pretty hard for a speech class. She expects A LOT and attendance in mandatory. However, she is very helpful and big on improvement. I learned a lot and if she sees you trying, she will help you out
Professor Pellechia is a nice person. However, she grades harshly on the speeches, so practicing beforehand is a must in order to do well. Lesson learned.
She is very helpful when you need it, but you have to work for your grade. She's very quiet to be a public speaking teacher so it's easy to ignore her but I still did fine. She is very nice and easy to work with.
Mrs. Marianne is a really nice lady and she genuinely cares about her students! Her grading criteria and expectations are crystal clear and as long as you follow her directions you will do fine. She also gives good feedback to help you improve. She doesn't use a textbook so don't worry about buying one! Good professor and easy class if you try.
Speeches make up the majority of the class. She takes them very seriously and loves creative topics. Would take her again although she is very soft-spoken and sometimes doesn't get her point across very well. Lectures are boring. Take her!
Marianne is a very sweet lady. The speeches were relatively easy and she grades very fairly. Class participation is definitely a big part of your grade. In between speeches she tried to give lectures but it's all pretty self-explanatory, so it was very boring.
She's a very nice lady, i think that she has made her class easier over the years because i have talked to people who took her in the past. She is very strict about attendance which is not that big of a deal as long as you show up. She is also very strict on grading your speeches, don't go over time or under time. She hates that.
I would recommend taking Marianne. She's very nice, and the criteria for speeches are very clear. As long as you go to class, and your speeches fit the time window she requires you should get an A. She'll even write you a recommendation letter, and gave our class Airheads at the end of the semester which I thought was awesome.
She's a really nice lady! She's clear about what she wants: participation, attendance and speeches that follow her guidelines. As long as you follow what she says to do you will get an A! Attendance is taken every class. She gives good feedback on speeches and there was one take home test.
Dr. Pellechia is very nice and approachable! The 3 speeches, attendance, and participation matters most. As long as you follow her guidelines for the speeches and show improvement over time (especially not reading from notes), you will be fine. At the end, we did an assignment on interviewing that really helped and was very useful. Great course!
Marianne is a very good teacher, she truly cares what she is teaching and that comes across. This class is definitely not an easy A but it will make you a better public speaker. There's never really an easy day in the class, expect to do work everyday. Overall I can say this class was worth taking as I learned a lot of useful information.
Marianne was a fantastic professor! She's quirky but truly cares about her students. The class consists of three speeches and a final group project. For the speeches, make sure to follow the outline template! And the final group project is pretty easy. Take her! You'll learn a lot.
Dr. P was a great professor! I became a better public speaker in her class and her feedback was always constructive and helpful. I would take her course again in a heartbeat. You have to work for the A, but it is not too difficult to achieve.
Super competent and organized, speeches take a lot of work but I learned so much from her regarding how to be professional and formal.
Take her class if you want to actually learn a lot. You have to do some preparation for speeches at home, but you can do them the night before and be fine. She will give good feedback and actually help you in real life. Take this class!
This was the best a speech class can be. She's got it down to a science, so you really learn a lot. She provides so much feedback that really helps to become a better speaker. 3 speeches, evaluations of other speakers and a final project at the end. Not hard, just make sure you show effort in improving what she says on your feedback.
The actual content is easy, you just have to prepare speeches and listen to her feedback carefully. Attendance is mandatory and she has harsh-ish policy regarding attendance. Good person, sometimes lecture is a little boring but most of the time you listen to other presentations anyway.
Marianne is an amazing speech professor who knows what she is talking about. She gives good feedback on all assignments and really cares that her students improve. She even includes an interview and resume assignment to help prepare students for job applications and interviews. Attendance and participation is required, but its honestly not that bad
Marianne is the absolute best. She is so personable and wants her students to succeed. She gives really good feedback on speeches and as long as you follow her feedback you'll do fine. Definitely make a relationship with her and ask her for advice because she's the best. I wish I could take another class with her.
Paperwork before speech presentations can be a little heavy. She is a very serious professor and will not allow phones or drawing during class, so ADHD students beware. However, she gives good feedback, provides lots of lectures and extra resources online, and really cares that we learn and succeed even beyond her class.
SPCH230 is the most helpful class I have ever taken. Dr. P's feedback is amazing and she is super accessible outside of class. I don't know if I've ever met a professor who's grading I agreed with more. This class is challenging and you need to put in the effort, but worth taking. Dr. P's lectures are a bit mind-numbing so be ready for that.
Class is boring, but it gets the credit out of the way. There are 3 speeches that are graded like exams. Take honors section if you can.
Aside from a few things, she was like okay. However, she was quite frankly rude and inflexible with students who had special circumstances. No one likes a teacher who doesn't care about their students enough to work with them and figure something out. Her lectures I found were also just not helpful and there were a few dumb assignments.
Overall a very good choice for speech in that her feedback was actually useful. Furthermore, once you understand what she is looking for (which, unfortunately will be like half way through), the speeches are much more methodical and you really get it. Great feedback, sometimes a bit strict. Ask questions during Q&A, part of grade. Take honors
Marianne may give okay written feedback to improve for the next assignment but she gives little in terms of becoming a truly captivating public speaker, probably because she is a terrible lecturer herself. Very inflexible to students' lives outside of the classroom if for any reason you can't attend class. Must pay attention to her boring lectures!
Professor Pellechia is specific with her speech expectations. Her lectures clearly explain the material in a manner that is as interesting as possible, and she provides additional resources on her website. There are four major assignments, so this class is easy with good time management. She is a great professor, but very strict with attendance.
Marianne can sometimes be blunt and sometimes quite particular, but she knows her stuff. Speeches are a lot of work, but can also be fun to prepare for if you pick a topic you're interested in. Lectures can be a bit boring, but tell you exactly what she's expecting. Definitely not an easy A, but doable if you put the time and effort in.
Marianne is chill and straightforward. She gives detailed feedback about all three speeches throughout the class. The final project was a group project, and it wasn't super hard, but be aware of that if that isn't your thing. Participation does matter and it can boost your final grade. Anytime I had questions or wanted advice she was happy to help.
She herself was a great teacher. Follow the rubric for the assignments and take notes from the class. Yes, she does put the slideshows onto her website however, they do not contain all the slides that were shown in the class so take notes. ASK QUESTIONS AFTER EACH PRESENTATION!!! It counts for a grade and you should have 20 by end of semester.
Class was straightforward. Follow the guidelines and practice and you will get an A. Marianne is so kind and understanding, I was out for a week sick and she made sure I got the information I missed. I learned so much about public speaking in this class and it is an experience I am truly thankful to have moving forward into the professional world.
This was probably the most boring class I have ever taken in my life. All we did was do slideshows where she read off of the screen. Class was easy as long as you do the work but be ready to be asked hard questions by her and your classmates after your speech. Make sure you are asking questions too. This is a required course so good luck.
Ironically for a speech teacher, her lectures are boring and dry. I think I found myself dissociating during her longwinded rants. On the flipside, the speeches are pretty straightforward, just do exactly as the rubric asks and this class is an easy A. Also, Dr. P is a pretty cool person, and it's apparent she wants you to grow as a speaker.
Marianne is the BEST! She is a very tough professor and does not go easy on grades; however, she really cares about her students and wants us to become better speakers. If you are looking to learn, take her class. If you are looking for an easy class, steer clear.
Pellechia is a respected professor, as she has high standards for her students. You will work for the A. She will grade harder as the year goes on. Leave lots of time to practice speeches. ASK QUESTIONS for other student speeches, as this heavily influences the participation grade. She gives great feedback on assignments and is approachable.
For the most part, as long as you do the busywork and write well-researched speeches, the class isn't that bad. She can tell if you have practiced or not, and will grade as such. There were a few partner/group activities but it was all mostly in class.
attendance strict; strict grader on speeches but you can use notes; classes can be very boring
While she was very nice, it seemed like she expected a lot for just an "introductory" speech course. Everything was very attainable, though, and I do think she was interested in seeing us succeed and understand.
Much of the grade with speeches is based on how charismatic you can be. Strong emphasis on creativity in the class. If you are bubbly person chances are you will like this class even if it sounds more "business-like". If you aren't you have a lot of work ahead of you, as you will likely have to put in a lot of work to be creative and conversational
Pretty straight forward class. Teacher is very flexible and easy to work with. Her lectures are not useful and she doesn't teach well. Speeches take a while to write and prepare, definitely start them a week in advance. As long as your speech meets the requirements and you make good eye contact, you will have no problem getting an A.
This is the most boring class I have ever taken. For a public speaking class she is soft spoken and not engaging at all. She is also extremely rude and blunt. She is very particular about the way she wants the speeches done and does not allow for creativity at all. Do not take her if there is another option!
Skip this class. Marianne is a terrible lecturer and she can't see past her rubric. If you don't sound like a robot and go off of a script you will get a B on EVERY SINGLE PRESENTATION. Grading is subjective and she doesn't tell you what your grade is until it's too late. SKIP DO NOT TAKE HER. She single-handedly ruined my 4.0 for a bs class. 0/10
Don't take unless she is the only option! She is a harsh grader and doesn't give good feedback. Very boring lectures. She wants her students to present with enthusiasm, meanwhile all of her students fall asleep while she lectures. It was a waste of credit hours, as I didn't learn anything and didn't know my grade til after the semester was done.
Professor Pellechia runs a challenging yet rewarding speech class. While the workload is heavy, the feedback is invaluable. Using unstuck ai for speech prep helped me ace the course.
tough grader and harsh on absences
Great class. We had 3 main speeches throughout the semester with clear instructions. We could pick any topic which made it interesting. Participation through Q&A is required but easy to achieve. She is a very fair grader and I would recommend.
Marianne Pellechia is a very sweet and caring, but she runs her class in a very strict and structured way. Attendance is mandatory with no leniency, and the workload felt tedious at times. It felt more like an English or writing class than a speech class—we spent a lot of time focusing on formatting instead of the speaking part.
Took this class my first semster, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER, horrible teacher
