AWESOME TEACHER!! She makes a bland subject interesting, and you know what to expect on her tests. She's also extremely helpful if you see her outside/after class. On her tests, just write everything you can squeeze out of your pen..her TA sucks!
Awesome teacher! made me love history!
Prof Dietz is a great teacher and an asset to the History department. I'm a history major but I was not looking forward to taking this class. She totally changed my opinion about ancient western civ. She made the class interesting and that was in Dodson, a class that sat at least 300-350 students. I recommend Prof Dietz.
she's VERY enthusiastic about history, which actually makes learning about some of the stuff more interesting.
Do the reading, take good notes, and remember names, dates, locations, and significance of readings.
Show up to class and listen. She tells you 95% of what is on exam. Easy A so long as you show up to class.
Great teacher, very interested in the material. She is very enthusiastic and helpful.
SUPER EASY A. JUST GO TO CLASS. DONT LET THE ESSAY QUESTIONS BOTHER YOU. RECOMMEND TO ANYONE. GREAT WOMEN. PS-SHE LOVES THE MEXICAN INTERNATIONAL SOCCER TEAM SO GO OUT AND BUY A JERSEY OR HAT AND SIT WHERE SEE CAN SEE YOU AND I PROMISE YOU WILL GET EXTRA CREDIT.
She does not take roll but i would think you would be pretty lost if you did not go to lecture. Tests are mostly essay, but not too terrible. MUST READ SOURCEBOOK. Great teacher, helpful, very knowledgeable. Made Western Civ, a class i was dreading, my favorite class that semester. Definitely take her and recommend her to all of your friends!
She is a great teacher and really interested in what she teaches. All the tests are essay. You really have to read and practically memorize your sourcebook. the textbook is useless though. She never ever took role but you must go to learn and copy the notes.
Not a very hard class. She does not teach very much that is relivent. She uses too much of the outside books and readings and not enough teaching in class.
Amazing Teacher. She can really make you intrested in what shes talking about. Test are all essay and require much preparation- but they are VERY straight forward. she even gives you the directions before the first test so you know exactly what to expect. Very fair- nice- and knowledgeble. Maybe even a little funny....
Amazing teacher, even if you are taking the class just for a random credit you will enjoy it.
Amazing Teacher! Relies on the outside texts books heavily. You can tell that she is interested in the subject and that she cares about her students. Tests are frightening but there is always a extra credit question. Papers are super easy and are just your thoughts on a subject that you pick from a provided list. I HIGHLY recommend her!
I love this teacher, I hadn't thought much of history before I came here, and considered this class just a credit, but she rekindled my love for history and her lectures are actually very, very intersting. You can tell she really loves history and that passion crosses over to you too. Overall she rocks my socks off. Lover her!
Dietz is passionate about history and very entertaining when she lectures. I'm not very into history, but she could hold my attention. Tests are not very difficult as long as you pay attention in class and KNOW the sources in the book.
This class is super easy all you need to do is read the chapters, sources, and notes from noteswap and you should for sure get an A. Also, there are test in the house boxes. Truly an easy class, take her!
Dietz is absolutely amazing! I've had her for 4008 as well as 4096 and she's my favorite history professor by far. She's very passionate about History. Her lecturing style can be a little sporadic, but it's always informative and entertaining. She's a fair/lenient grader as well.
Dr. Dietz is probably the most likeable prof I've had. Her passion for history is contagious and her teaching style is easily understandable. She answers emails promptly and thoroughly. The exams focused heavily on what was covered in class, and with just going to class and studying my notes (rarely reading the textbook) I got a B in the class.
Absolute best teacher I've ever had. She's extreamly helpful and makes the material super interesting- even if you're not a history student! I've recommend her to EVERYONE who needs a class she teaches.
Not the easiest class, but it was still one of my favorites at LSU
Participation is huge in this class. She is very enthused about teaching it so you can't help but go to class and pay attention. She is kind and very interested in teaching you about what she knows. She even throws in a few personal stories here and there. Go to class, pay attention, read the readings, and a b is assured.
Great teacher. Very enthusiastic about her area of study. Can be erratic at times during lecture making it tough to take notes. Surprisingly very funny and will definitely make you laugh if you're paying attention. Just go to class and you can easily BS all the essays and pull a B.
She is very helpful when you ask. Go to class, pay attention, and study a little bit and you will be in good shape. You don't really need the textbook but DO READ the outside sources she puts on Moodle! You WILL have to know them for the exams. It is hard to get an A but a B is easy to get. Go to the discussion sessions for points and for help.
Best. Teacher. At. LSU She is a great teacher, and she is even funny Really makes you interested in history because of her passion. Go to class and take notes Read the sources You'll be fine This is a very enjoyable class Wonderful lady
She is my favorite teacher at LSU! Her class is by no means "easy." You need to put in a fair amount of effort and time, but otherwise you will do fine. Her lectures are interesting. Dietz is funny and she likes to engage the class in truly fun participation activities. She truly cares about her students. Take her!
Dietz is very enthusiastic about what she teaches and it makes the class very interesting. Overall she is an awesome professor, and I would definitely take her again. Whatever you do definitely read the outside sources because they are going to be on the test. Write solid essays and the rest of the class is relatively easy.
Professor Dietz is an amazing person, but sadly if you've never taken a history class before, be ready to read a ton. I didn't really care for her teaching style which consisted of just lecturing the whole time, and having few picturesnotes on her powerpoints. Sometimes I didn't know what was most important to know. GO to discussion sessions!!!
Dietz really loves history, but her class is not easy at all. It isn't impossible, but the exams consist of maps, terms, and many long, boring outside sources. A lot of time needs to be invested to get an A or high B. I would rather take a different history than 1001.
She is a great lecturer and gets people involved. She is passionate about what she teaches and is fun and actually interesting. Go to office hours that helps a TON. Also do the source review sessions cause those are super helpful for tests and you get 2 points extra credit. No way you won't get an A if you actually study and are in class.
Dr. Dietz is wonderful. If you make the effort and keep up with reading, you will pass. material comes from lectures, you will need the notes. 4 in-class assignments, lowest dropped. 4 sections to the tests, two essays. Also gives two points to final grade for attending 3 (extremely helpful) discussion sessions. Read those sources!
Great class if you are interested in any type of history, sometimes seems s her lectures are like stories, overall not a very hard class to get an A or a B
She's a great teacher who loves history, but I thought her tests were too hard for a 1001 class. Tests require reading/memorizing many outside sources that she doesn't explain in class. Discussion sessions really help and you get 2% points added if you attend them. Be prepared to spend a lot of time studying.
Professor Dietz is hands down the one of the best professors I have ever had. Shes the only class I looked forward to going to. Her lectures rock and if you go to class and pay attention this will be an easy A
She is an amazing professor! She keeps students engaged in class and will go off topic a little to give more backstory to something, which makes it interesting. You do read A LOT in this class and the midterm and final are long but not impossible and she gives study guides/key terms to check out before. Go to class, listen, and take notes!
There are a lot of sources that you need to know for the test. Otherwise, it was a very easy class. She is energetic and gives extra credit opportunities throughout the semester.
One of the most energetic and passionate professors I've had. You need to memorize keywords and sources, and write some short essays -- but if you manage that then you'll have a good time with the exams. The discussion sessions and her office hours will help you accomplish an A. Take (or obtain) good notes. Homework is average (Moodle based).
She was an amazing professor who made history interesting and memorable. The only thing is that her tests are mostly short answers but if you go to her lectures and the read the weekly readings you can easily get an A. I personally recommend going to the SI sessions because alot of good things are talked about and its for extra credit.
Dr. Dietz was by far one of my favorite professors I have ever had. You can tell from her lectures that she truly cares about her subject and her students. Her tests are a bit challenging since they are mostly essay based, but if you go to class and go to the SI sessions for the primary sources she gives you, you will have no issues succeeding.
I really enjoyed this class and would definitely take it again. Her class is really enjoyable and she is very passionate in what she is teaching which makes the class interesting. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
She is a great lecturer who kept it interesting. Gives a good amount of extra credit and going to class isn't mandatory but she does have random in class assignments without warning. Her tests are like mostly essay based and analyzing all of the sources is a pain but once you know a good way to study it's not bad. GO 2 SI SESSIONS! Helped me alot
Took 2 of her classes at the same time and I adore her. She is very intelligent and gives very good lectures. Only a few tests and quizzes so you need to make sure you read her primary sources for the essays. I will try and take as many of her classes as possible.
Awesome teacher. She gives 4 random in class assignments throughout the semester & drops 1, so you have to go most days, but her lectures were interesting so it's not bad. She really cares about the students and will meet you in her office hours to help you improve on the tests. She is extremely knowledgeable and knows what she's talking about.
Professor Dietz is awesome! Her lectures are great. Her class was easy if you showed up and studied. 10/10 would recommend.
A really fun and easy class if you go to the lectures. Outside of the lectures I just made flashcards for the terms and memorized the maps. Weekly assignments due Sunday on Moodle that are super easy. 5 in-class surprise assignments are also super easy. If you listen in class (which isn't hard), you should do pretty well.
Dr. Dietz is a great history professor who understands that many students have a lot of other classwork to do as well. There is a lot of reading, you will have to do a short presentation (about 2-3 minutes), and participate in class discussions.
Pretty chill class. Tests are unforuently very test heavy.
Dietz is an amazing professor! Super fun, nice and caring! She loves her job and you learn a lot! Her lectures are like "story time" which make them intresting and intriguing! For exams theyre based off of 10 terms, a map and 2 essay questions. Just study the sources and map and you'll be fine Go to SI sessions they're very helpful! TAKE THIS CLASS
Dr. Dietz has been one of the best professors I have encountered thus far. She tries to keep lectures interesting, and is easily accessible outside of class. You can tell she cares for her students, and is willing to work with you if you show you care. There is a good bit of outside source reading, but the SI helps with that. Overall enjoyable.
She makes the class so interesting. If you like history at all you will love her!
Save yourself the work. I took this class bc I thought it would be an easy elective. It's NOT. She is upbeat and "fun" but her lectures are long and fast. Her tests are essay heavy and they are on SO much material. If you love history then take the class but it will still take tons of work. If you are looking for an easy elective, AVOID.
One of the best professors Ive ever had. Took her for HIST 1001 and Im currently taking her class again for HIST 4007. She genuinely wants you to do well in her class and will help you get an A especially if you go into her office and get to know her. If you need an easy elective, this is it.
Class was heavy on discussion of reading books. Genuinely wants you to do well and will tell you exactly how to get an A in her course. With COVID, she is very laid back and cares more about your mental health.
Prof. Dietz was an amazing History professor at LSU. Lectures are far from boring, she is hilarious and wants us to give our opinions on readings. No textbook, but have to buy a few small books for the semester (I found them all online for free). I would love to take her class again. I learned a lot.
One of the hardest and uneccasry classes at LSU. This class is harder than some of my highest level Chemical Engineering Courses. Do not take this class unless you have all the time in the world to read
Take this class if you want to major in history
Hardest thing I've ever done. Dr. Dietz sets standards too high for a 1000 level course.
Professor Dietz is extremely difficult to deal with. She is not good at responding to emails and when she does respond she is extremely rude in her response. Class is not interesting at all. She lectures for almost two hours straight. It is rare her lectures are interesting. Be prepared to read a lot of uninteresting primary sources..
Dr. Dietz is a very understanding and a kind professor. She understands students and gives a good amount of time before an assignment is due. Her class is based on lectures so get ready to take lots of notes. But in the end its very easy. She is a really good professor i recommend taking her class.
Does random in-class assignments so sometimes class is mandatory. Her tests are all one or more answers can be chosen so very difficult. Skips around in her lectures and is not easy to take notes on. Not an easy A course, have to try and also write an essay with every exam. Wouldnt take if you're looking for an easy history course.
She's a nice lady, but her lectures are extremely boring. I thought it was an easy class, but you have to work for it. Lectures are hard to follow and its not easy to take notes. She gives lots of extra credit and make up assignments. Half the time I didn't know what she was taking about and what we were even learning. Take a diff class if you can.
Maribel is very passionate about what she teaches. The lectures are boring and the tests are pretty difficult. With each test there is an essay you have to submit. If you study and look over the material, go to SI sessions, and pay attention to her lectures you should be fine. I ended with a B.
professor Dietz's lectures are very boring and she goes off topic and rambles a lot. her exams are extremely difficult and don't go over what we learned in class. do not take if you want an easy A
The lectures are important for doing good on exams. The exams consist of 25 multiple choice and an essay. Usually have one quiz based on a video each week and sometimes in-class assignments. Attendance isn't mandatory but it will reflect on your exams and in-class assignments. Overall, it is an easy grade if you do your part in attending class.
Great professor, gives you a copy of the textbook for free and all here tests are online and can be taken at home and are open book.
Just finished my first semester of college and this was by far my favorite class as well as my favorite prof. She is very sweet and tries to make her lectures as interesting as possible. And coming for someone who is not too fond of History, this is the most intriguing history has ever been. As long as you attend class and take notes, you're good!
She is very kind and wants her students to do well. The class is actually really interesting and the way she teaches it is easy to follow and fun to listen to. She was very engaging and made the classroom comfortable to ask questions and engage.
Amazing, take her for everything
She is very kind and really makes an effort to get to know her students. Very easy class with online tests and she's an easy grader. Definitely recommend taking her classes.
This class had a lot of work to it for a 1001 level class. I don't think Professor Dietz is a bad professor but the material was just not very good. I felt like more could have been done to make the material more fun and more memorable for students.
Professor Dietz is great! Lectures are engaging and are essential to do well on exams. Her class can be intimidating, as our exams include an in-class written essay. But, she and her TA's are available multiple times throughout the week and are more than willing to work with you. If you attend class and read the required readings, you will do good.
She's funny, personable, and makes lectures interesting. She offers a lil extra credit here and there. Four exams, MC part of exams are take home, with 4 in-class essays. Take home quizzes every week. TA's grade those in-class papers crazy hard though. Go to class or you won't pass, she has randomized attendance.
Dietz is a good professor who loves her job. She lists out topics that will be for each test. She doesn't post her slides unless needed. You have to go to class! Most of the exam essay question is detailed from her lectures and historical documents she posts in Moodle. Mult. choice was on Moodle but students cheated so now tested in class *sigh*
Professor Dietz was by far one of my favorite professors to take at LSU. The class is fairly simple if you do the assignment and go over the primary sources that are given to you before each exam. She also reminds her students that her office hours are open in case of anything.
Professor Dietz is one of the best history professors at LSU. She is extremely caring and easy to reach outside of class. The class is information-heavy, but she makes it clear and easy to understand. There are few assignments but if you go to class you will get an easy A. I would definitely take another class with Professor Dietz.
Her lectures are genuinely interesting and I loved every bit of them! Her exams are part online multiple choice and an in-class essay, but it is quite easy if you just re-read all your notes and go over the primary sources. I would recommend going to class because she goes very in-depth and some points might be on the exam! Would recommend!!
Professor Dietz was very passionate about what she talked about during class. But her class was very difficult for a 1001 class. If you were looking for a less stressful class for an easy elective, then this class is not it. However, this course might fit you if you are a history lover.
amazing prof, would definitely take again, highly recommend for gen ed credits. didn't have to write a paper which was lovely! learned a lot and weekly homework was super easy
Professor Dietz great as a person but as far as her material goes, it's pretty difficult. Participation matters bc she will have random in class assignments that can make or break your grade. Class is lecture heavy and you will have to read numerous long sources for exams. All exams are in class essays and half online (multiple choice section).
She makes attendance 15% of your grade which is insane when you pay to take these classes. Acts like it's not 1000 level course and everyone is a history major. Purposely makes the test confusing and super detailed. As an engineering student taking this for a credit she makes it much more time consuming than it should be.
You're forced to sit in long lectures just so you don't fail from attendance. Tests are impossible to study for since she gives no direction and makes them very hard. For a low leveled course that many people take just for a credit she makes it way harder than it should be. You could probably find a 3000 level course easier than this
Professor has a disorganized and quirky way of lecturing, leaving a lot of confusion when it comes to the exams. Attendance is mandatory, since you never know when she may give a random in-class assignment. Exams are incredibly difficult, considering it's a 1000 level course, and anyone would even find a higher level course easier than this one.
very sweet lady and you can tell she likes teaching history. Tons of material though, this is not an easy class, so prepare to go to SI sessions and office hours.
Amazing lectures.3 exams that are half multiple choice and a essay question based on primary sources. Just go to SI and you'll pass the exams.
Honestly I couldn't stay awake through the class. Her lectures are boring and long. Attendance is mandatory because she assigns random in class assignments, which are a mix of group work and individual work. Such a hard and unnecessary class, especially for it being 1001.
GREAT professor. Although content can be boring at times, she makes you feel very prepared for exams. She does in class assignments and if you miss one it takes a toll on your grade however there are ways to fix it. Overall content is boring unless you love history, but great professor and always willing to work with you to help you.
Professor Dietz obviously cares about her job and wants you to succed in her class. I think she is aware history is not everyones favorite subject bu she makes it very intresting just by how much she cares. Go to her lectures and you are bound to succeed.
extremely long, boring, and unorganized lectures. she obviously loves what she's doing but makes it too difficult for a 1001 level class. go to class because she has random in class assignments that highly affect your grades. I took this class as an elective and it was a BIG mistake. don't really reccommend.
She gives opportunities for extra credit, and she has multiple hours with her and the grad students. Nice lady, clearly loves what she does. If there are any bad reviews, it's clear they just didn't go to class.
Love Prof Dietz, she's so silly and cute. Class itself is not too bad but def would recommend studying for tests if you don't go to class. You can def pass it w/ little effort tho. Her HIST1002 sem is so fun and she makes it enjoyable.
Amazing teacher and loves what she does! Going to class matters as she basically gives you the anwsers in the lectures and slides, as well as she has in class assignments that are mandatory. However, if you go to SI sessions as well as any other extra thing she will provide extra credit as well as makeups for missing the in class assignments.
She is a nice person, but literally reads straight from the slides the entire class. She posts the slides so why should we have to come to class. Random in class quizzes that count as "in class assignments" to see if you were in class. Reading straight from the slides that are ALREADY POSTED is crazy and the class is long af.
