This was the most amazing class I have ever taken. Marie is a great lecturer, artist and scholar. It's a lot of reading, some moderate writing; 2-3 one page reflections a week, and one big presentation at the end of the semester. I highly recommend her.
The work was not that hard although there was a lot of reading. What I noticed about this class is that it focuses on the issues of the **** community, as opposed the community of women as a whole. If that's not what you're looking for don't take this.
Weekly journals, big final presentation. Easy grader if you do what she expects. Can be unorganized, eccentric, but will learn a lot. Interesting reading and class discussions.
Although she is a good instructor, focuses too much on the gay community, rather than women's issues as a whole. Should be teaching more generic material than the lesbian slant. But still interesting in the general areas of study.
very enegetic and makes the class interesting. She does talk about the gay community alot but she makes she think alot about how women are treated. Just do all the writing assignments and do good on final presentation.
very interesting prof. enjoyed lectures, reading material, journals, final project. made going to class something to look forward to.
she is an awesome teacher! if you have the opportunity to take her, i suggest you do so...
She gives you tons of work to do. If you are willing to give up some time and actually learn, take her. If you are looking for an easy class, don't. Lots of work but not hard at all to get a good grade. Go to the class and do the work. She can be pretty cool.
Very enlighting professor
Prof Cartier is truly inspirational. Her classes are filled with info you won't learn anywhere else. She's very approachable and understanding of her student's needs and concerns. Her midterms and finals are awesome! I highly recommend her classes. It's a lot of reading but she compensates for them with very interesting lectures. You’ll love her!
amazing inspirational class i have never taken a class that got me so involved and upset about th e world around me , brava marie you totally rock!!!!
The class was a lot of work. If you are interested in lesbian/gay issues take this class, if not don't because all she talks about is just that. THe class should be called lesbian studies and not WS. HW takes a lot of time and effort. Easy grader, just show enthusiasm and you'll be fine.
A lot of reading and homework. She's very passionate about her teaching. Will never let you out early, and expects the best from every student. Very knowledgeable about woman's studies.
AWESOME PROFESSOR. opened my eyes, or "reframed my gaze" as she would say, to soo many things. I've never sat through any class and paid full attention like i did to her. Very inspirational. I highly suggest taking this class. It's not easy, it's alot of work, but it opens your mind. There is alot of reading and writing, but in the end it pays off.
One of the best professors at CSUN! I really enjoyed this class. There is homework due at every class... but I always enjoyed doing it. I learned so much. Professor Cartier is an amazing woman!
She is an extremely hard professor who truly cares about her students/
Professor Cartier is simply amazing. Sometimes her assignments are not always clear but she might be the smartest woman I have ever known. You def need to be open minded in her class. All her assignments are worth it for what you learn from her. I highly advise everyone to take her.
Amazing Professor. She gives a lot of work and a lot of reading but the class is very interesting. Attendance is important but all her class meetings are very interesting and time fly's by so quick in her class. I loved this class I recommend her!! Oh and there is a lot of participation in the class btw but its fun!
I love Marie! The class is a little intimidating at first because there is SO MUCH READING. 2 presentations on projects and mandatory class attendance. Honestly, at first I hated this class, but I stuck with it. I have so much respect for Marie and her values that I would take her class again if I could. She will help you if you need it!
This is a wonderful professor. I'd take her even if I didn't need the units. A brilliant lady that will teach you so much. Highly recommended.
I would not recommend her for an online class. It was a huge mess. She was confusing and unorganized. It is also a lot of work and definitely not an easy A. She knows what she's teaching but the lectures were boring.
Prof. Cartier is a GEM. Her online class was AWESOME. Yes, it was slightly unorganized, but FANTASTIC. I learned SO much about women, lesbians, etc. She is THE MOST GENUINE AND CARING professor I've ever come across. Just get involved, and participate and you'll likely get an A. It's an insightful yet fun class and she's an absolutely awesome lady!
Great teacher! Easy class, just a lot of reading, but the material is very interesting. Not a hard class, as long as you stay focused. Definitely my favorite class!!!
No feedback what so ever. Once a week lectures are pointless but mandatory. She doesn't read the weekly discussions. You are pretty much on your own.
great professor, super easy class and will for sure get an A. just do all the forum posts, there arent any tests or quizzes, and the final and midterm is super easy!
Took as a hybrid class so we only met once a week & she did take attendance and collect things so you do have to go to class, which is pointless and hard to convince yourself to do. the class is easy, no real final or midterm, it's a project. But she's really unorganized especially on moodle. Overall, not horrible and it's easy to get a good grade.
She is energetic and knowledgeable in this field, but she is very disorganized and gave me anxiety from doing things last minute, &being unclear of what she wants exactly. There are no exams. With the hybrid class, you have 32 online forum posts to do. For the final you write a 6pg paper & a 1 hour interview with a woman you consider a survivor.
She's a great professor. Super knowledgable and passionate. There's no final, but an hour long interview you must conduct along with online forum posts. You do learn a lot from her class though, she touches up on super touchy subjects that we tend to ignore, so it's a cool experience.
This entire class is a promo for her book and she can't get through a sentence without mentioning how great she is. The criteria for the class changes constantly, and she's way behind the times to be teaching a queer studies class. Strong emphasis on the importance of gays and lesbians, forgets the trans community. Actually teases them in our class
Hybrid class was pretty easy. Make sure you do your Moodle posts (I actually missed like 3 and still got an A, though). As far as she goes, she's a really good professor. You can tell she's extremely passionate about what she does. She knew her material and was very lenient with deadlines and turning in stuff late. Final is extremely easy.
Professor Cartier is very passionate and knowledgeable in her field. The hybrid class is a good choice, but make sure you stay on top of your Moodle posts (don't procrastinate!). She assigns quite a bit of reading -- you go through five books by the end of the semester -- but it's interesting content. Final is an easy project of your choice.
Professor Cartier knew her stuff. fairly easy class. there is about 5 books and moodle post about it, but the questions are easy you dont gotta read half of the time to answer. shes very helpful with any questions you have. no quizzes, there is a midterm website project and an final of your choice. easy class.
If you are planning on taking this as a GE and not for a minor or major, do not waste your time. She expects way too much from her students and treats the class like a graduate level class with all the things she expects. For example, this big project that you must do 8 hour of community service for. Just save your time if you have other options.
I took her for a Queer studies class and I wouldn't take her again or recommend her. She talks about herself a LOT, doesn't teach and stuffs the class full of guest speakers. The criteria for her projects changes a lot and when asked for clarification she gets defensive. The class isn't very hard though.
This class was very inspirational, had to do presentations and helped me get out of my comfort zone a bit. There are moodle posts to do but they are fairly easy, and no tests and midterms, just a project and i believe an interview (i honestly dont remember if i took her 110 class or 300 but it was great)
Great teacher. The work is as challenging as you want to make it. If you keep up with the reading and the forum posts it's a breeze and you learn something. I didn't like the group work at first, no one really does, but we made it work and I made some new friends. All in all it was a really great school experience.
(HYBRID CLASS) Cartier is crazy lol. She has a lot of opinions, so if your own opinion regarding the topic she is pointing out preferably just be quiet. Her assignments are easy. 2 Fourms every week regarding on the reading. No quizzes. Final is an art piece regarding on the lessons we've learned throughout the semester. Overall great professor!
Take this class if you want to have a professor that cares and gives you so many resources and information outside of the classroom. I took her hybrid class and it's just discussion forums based on interesting books and other topics and an easy interpretive midterm and final that she gives 100% on most of the time. Definitely take her if you can.
She is nice & passionate about her subject however her class is very disorganized & is unclear with her directions. 3 books, mandatory 8 hr volunteering, a lot of guest speakers, a field trip, and an intensive final project. The class is easy but does require a lot of participation. she makes up assingments as she goes along.
I took her Hybrid class and although she can be a bit confusing when it comes to her assignments, she is an amazing professor. She is the first professor I've had at CSUN where you can feel her genuinely when it comes to caring for her students. Her assignments consisted of readings and opinion forums. Get ready to work in groups in class!
she really cares about her job and she opened my eyes to so many things that i'm now a women's studies major.
To the person below me: Yes she's on the "liberal" side & discusses political issues a lot, but she is a WOMAN, so it shouldn't be a shocker that she's not in agreement w/republican nonsense! She's incredibly intelligent, funny, & makes online meetings a BREEZE! There's tons of reading, but it's actually really fun! SUPER EASY A if you want it!!
The class was online and you would have to have webcam/video meetings with her every week. But don't worry, you won't have to turn on your mic or cam, just type to talk to her. The books she assigned were great, forums and assignments were easy. Midterm is an interview essay. Final is a creative project. I enjoyed her class and would take her again
Did not lecture our class but spoke about current events from the newspaper each class. Very unclear on grading criteria and can be confusing at times. The majority of the class was an interview project which was posted online and multiple forum posts
Professor Cartier is definetely passionate about this subject. I was not too happy with having to do artwork in a non-art class. I would not take this class again. The whole idea of an online class is to not have a class meeting. I have a full time job and must work. Not meet online for a video chat weekly. Definetly would not recommened her.
One of the most inspirational professor's I have ever had throughout my college experience. Truly does care for her students wants to see them succeed. She does assign a lot of assignments because I took her hybrid class but are not difficult to get done. She wants her students to share and express their own thoughts. Would definitely recommend her
She's a sweet lady. Her assignments are 2 forums each week (one corrosponds with a book for the class and another topic). To me, it feels like a lot of work because we had to make five posts in the forums. The midterm and final are connected together with interviews of a specific group of people. However, she's a bit confusing when talking about it
All around great woman that just wants world peace. She will open up your mind in great ways. There is a lot of reading that you must do but most of the books are good reads, two are comic books. You will have to do forum posts every single week but she is not a tough grader. Mid term and final are interviews with a group that you choose. Love her.
Honestly the easiest A, EVER. Forum posts every week; 1st discussion, and 2nd about an assigned book. Midterm consists of an interview with a person you consider a survivor, final is a summary of all of your work throughout the semester. Be organized, do work every week, attend online lectures, and you're guaranteed an A. Second time taking her!
I LOVED her class. She is a real gem of a professor. She is caring and gives great feedback. She really wants her students to learn. One of the textbooks used is a book she wrote. I've already taken her more than once for a class. AMAZING
She's a great professor and all around person. She's passionate about the subject and sparks great convo. She assigns a lot of reading, work, and the midterm and final are lengthy. They are basically 5 different assignments put into each one. My biggest thing is her disorganization. She hates answering questions about the projects and isn't clear.
Here is my hang up. She is nice woman who is passionate about her rights as a woman and what she personally stands up for. However, she is very unclear when answering questions, she NEVER grades all semester, you have a lot of weekly posts to complete, and to me, it is a lot of busy work. Would not recommend this class.
QS302 Nice easy class but terrible organization. The entire semester no one knew what was going on and we had to rely on each other for support. She changed her mind a million times about what she expects from you. If you can deal with disorganization and showing up for a class that couldve been online, go for it. Would NOT recommend. Busy work!
This professor does not explain the assignments clearly and it feels like she is improvising the discussions and assignments each class. Also it feels like she honestly doesn't even have a grasp on intersectionality even though she is teaching the class on it. You could learn more and do less work with another professor probably.
You meet on zoom at a live class. Take her she is really nice and gives feedback on your midterm. Although she takes a long time to grade. Discussions posts every week; 1st discussion, and 2nd about an assigned book. Midterm and Final are on canvas. She is great with emails.
So her lecture points and books do seem biased sometimes, but she is VERY inspirational and knows what she is talking about! This was one of those classes that make an impact on you and affect your gaze on the world after taking it. Class consists mostly of weekly discussion posts, weekly zoom meetings, and projects for midterm/final.
Great teacher and class. Professor Cartier has a great lecture3 that keeps students engaged. Gives weekly reading assignments. Attendance affects your class participation grade. Easy class to pass if you show up to class and turn in assignments. 1 midterm project & 1 final project
You have to buy like 6 novels for this class and the most expensive one was written by the professor. She is nice but can be biased, especially on political topics. There are 2 online discussion assignments each week with 5 posts each so they take time. One big interview/essay project with lots of steps to submit to an archive at the end.
Dr. Cartier is a unique woman. has so much personal experience with queer activism that she is more than qualified to teach L.A. in Transit (Gay L.A.). It is remarkable the guest speakers she brings in, and the class meetings we have outside of the actual classroom. Highly recommend. Just do what she says, though, in regard to assignments.
Took her for GWS 351. Lots of reading and weekly posts (they're simple and doable if you put in the time to read). One midterm and one final that involves reaching out to people and going to places for your projects. It was fun doing them. By the end of the semester, learned a lot about intersectionality. Passionate Professor. Would take again!
This class gives you so many new perspectives. There are a lot of books you need to purchase for this class. There are 2 discussions each week, a midterm, & a final, but this class is super manageable & she's really caring. During the pandemic she allowed everyone during Zoom to open their mic & vid to share their feelings so they didnt feel alone.
I seriously ADORE Cartier. She is by far my favorite teacher! Her class is easy and makes you think. She cares about her students and what they go through. She's very vocal about the struggles of everyone, especially minorities. She helped inspire me as one queer woman to another. Wish I could have her as a teacher for life!
You will read a LOT. 3 books - not as heavy as u think .NO QUIZZES OR TESTS Weekly discussion abt assigned reading . Don't slack off. Its not as hard as it seem, you just need to read & give feedback. AMAZING GUEST SPEAKERS. She was a little scrambled with assignments and the criteria but you just need to clarify and she will easily clarify.
For QS 302 !!! In this class you will be assigned 3 books. You will have many discussion posts and need to reply back to classmates 5 times. Also she doesnt grade anything until the end of the semester. There are no quizzes. Our midterm was to interview a gay elder. You need to put in the work but she is very caring. Youll do fine dont slack....
2 discussion posts a week, midterm based on eating with $70 for a week, final (interview). Zoom mtgs, but didn't necessarily teach what was on syllabus, moreso discussion about the books we read (about 5, not bad) and current social/ political events. She encourages discussions. Doesn't grade discussion posts, we select our ten best to get graded.
I LUV HER! She's amazing and really cares for her students. Discussion posts every week based on books we read (4). Midterm is eating on $10 a day for a week + reflection. Final is interview + a summary. Classes are super interesting and is always able to connect to talk how the issues we read in the books are related in today's day and age.
The most kind and loving professor. She loves what she does and is truly inspirational. It's a very easy class as long as you try!! That's all that matters. Read the books and discuss on the discussion board. Do not stress!! Her class is seriously the best.
She is so nice. I love taking the class. 2 weekly discussions each week for homework. Midterm and final are interviews based on a group that you choose to do. Take her she is really nice and helpful.
The grade is based on discussions you do on some books you will read and a project for midterm and another project on the final. Overall not that hard.
She does not submit ANY grades until the end of the semester. 100ish reading paages per week and discussion posts weekly. Midterm/final is 7 essays. She is a carding person though.
There is a LOT of busy work in this class, like a very unrealistic amount. I feel like she has no regard for the fact that we have other classes. There are 2 time consuming discussions every week consisting of 5 posts each that feel like youre repeating yourself over and over. Her lectures are very unnecessary too, she reads off canvas for an hour.
I'm a good student, but this class is a waste of time. 2 extensive and repetitive discussions a week with 4 additional responses required for each, inappropriate midterm and final project that demanded super personal information to be shared, and she made us buy her OWN book...why? She's nice, a little cooky, but this class took up so much time.
Spring 2022: Syllabus= required books/no specifics for course work/midterm/final. Assignment info given in zoom meetings, take notes. Wish I knew:due dates for midterm/event paper/final project+specifics ahead of time. This course/semester:project instructions constantly evolve until week it is due. Email her for clarification throughout the class
I enjoyed this class a lot, and it definitely opened my eyes to many things. I will say beware of the AMOUNT of reading you will have to do, as you also have discussion posts to complete regarding the readings. Overall, I thought this class was an easy A.
I cannot stand professors who write the textbook and then make you buy it for an exorbitant price. I had to pay $40 for the KINDLE version of this book! $160 if I wanted the hardcover. She is a very good professor, very interesting and knowledgeable about the topic. Interesting stories and class discussions.
So much reading, 5 books total. 1 midterm and final paper, fairly easy and is an ethnography. 2 discussions to complete each week based on reading and lecture. Overall very easy, just a lot of busy work. The books were very expensive. I loved her energy and she is very laid back. Not a harsh grader on the papers. Take her class if you need to.
She's nice, truly, but can come off condescending sometimes. Too much work, thats sometimes pointless. It's the same question rephrased for 2 weeks, but you have to come up with different answers for each. The work isn't challenging just not at all engaging. id recommend the class because it's easy, but super boring and repetitive.
Professor Cartier is a very friendly and driven woman who cares about what she teaches. She is always open to suggestions or communicating with students in and outside of class. She is a great professor and I would happily take her again.
Dr. Cartier is very knowledgeable about queer history. She spends most of the three-hour class period lecturing or bringing in guest speakers, but the information is interesting. The midterm (several short papers) and final (creative project) are based on archiving an interview with a gay elder. Weekly discussion posts are overwhelming/repetitive.
Online lectures met once a week. 5 assigned books. 2 discussion posts on Canvas each week. You have to attend a live event at CSUN and write a paper about it. 2 additional essays for the class. Homework is repetitive. I wish she included more media like movies, artwork, albums, etc. rather than just books when talking about intersectionality.
She is so nice, however, many things we watched in this class were super inappropriate. 2 very time-consuming discussions every week along with 4 additional responses per discussion. The midterm was super inappropriate and shouldn't be allowed. She was also very political and I felt like she kept pushing her beliefs towards the class.
The selection of films and reading material are not diverse or inclusive. The instructor is very forgetful and not tech savvy. Another issue is that the instructor forgets what they have discussed every class. There is a mandatory field trip with no compensation for travel/parking. There are also unnecessary textbook costs placed upon students.
(Note: I did QS304, which is not listed) One of the best professors I've had here! I learned a lot about queer history through what we watched, discussed, read, and mostly through the final project she had us do. The final is a lot of work, but is really accomplishing if you do the work. She also creates a great sense of community amongst the class
Professor Cartier is an alright professor. No complaints other than the fact that her discussions are graded very late so you don't receive much feedback unless you reach out. Other than that, I just find it ridiculous that this is a semester long course. Classes like these GE's remind us why the American education system sucks.
I have no issues with her personally but her class is sloppy. You never receive feedback so you don't know if you're actually grasping the concepts. Lecture is just a jumble. Midterm was lowkey kinda fun for me. Final was eh. I absolutely dreaded the discussions every week just time consuming and repetitive with no value being added.
Knowledgable professor but assignments are VERY repetitive (you'll answer the same questions for different readings the whole semester). Unorganized class and canvas page in general. You won't get any feedback on assignments. Otherwise not a difficult class.
