Avoid at all costs. It is not as easy as it sounds.
She is tough, but she is also very knowledgable and knows how to teach.
Very intimidating, unapproachable, very picky in grading papers, avoid is poss.
I've had her twice - she is pretty good. She does expect you to work.
This class was tough!
Pretty much a waste of a class; she didn't help things much
Has a chip on her shoulder, clear and concise, but condesending at times
include some extra BS in your paper to get a good grade
I took her HR class over the summer and I thought it was good!
Interesting, good teacher, go to class to learn.
She is a precise and extremely knowledgeable HR professor. I recommend taking.
The most useful class I had in four years.
Hard class, wants you to realize that you're overprivliaged white trash.
Makes you think. Handles difficult material in an even handed way.
BAD teacher, don't take it, you'll get ripped a new one.
Great class; very interesting
Great teacher. Makes you aware of who you are in an interesting way. Visit her.
Not very good.
Too busy with other activities to teach.
Acts like you don't exist
You want to learn something meaningful? Take her. Want to be spoon fed?
The best HR class you will ever take! Not easy, but makes you think critically.
Very unclear expectations....requires a great deal of though for a passing grade
You gotta hate theme classes. Not a bad professor, but political conservatives beware!!!! Not a fun class.
Demands that you think
interesting at first, but getting told how horrible white people are gets a bit old! very frustrating class, and hard grader. OH and if your not liberal RUN!!
Too many papers and she does grade on attendence
If you rate a prof. based on how easy to get an A, you are missing the point. She expects you to EARN your grade and slackers will fail her class. Her liberal attitude and political preferences should have nothing to do with her rating whatsoever!
It is a very well designed class. The exams are quite tough. If you do a decent job of doing the reading and the study guides you should be fine. Demands that you think.
Human Resources prof, she's tough, but interesting. Don't take this class if you like to skip. There's a lot of homework, but expectations are clear.
Interesting teacher, she really makes you think. It is an SWS class but be prepared to write a lot of small papers between the big papers that she has you write. I suggest taking this course.
A lot of work, but you will know HR when you are done with the class.
I think she is an excellent teacher that demands that you know the material. Homeworks and exams are straightforward and she presents the material well. Not a lot of outside time required to get an A.
you will learn a lot do the homework and the reviews for the exams and you will do great. she really knows what she is talking about
Way too much material to study, and study guide questions didnt match up with test. Very knowledgeable, but way too much work.
Very nice lady. Class isn't too hard but many papers. She is very smart and makes you think about thigs differently. I definitley recommend this course.
I love Professor McKendall because she doesn't clog your brain with useless information. There is a no fuss aspect to her and she gets straight to the point. She has given me a lot of practical knowledge. Great class, great prof.
McKendall makes clear and understandable lectures, very knowledgable in subject area and has helpful resources if you choose to use them! You must go to class and put some study time in, but otherwise very straightforward!
Took this as SWS with her and wrote more than any writing class I have taken in my life. Learned a lot more too though. Very writing intensive, but a good prof. Puts big emphasis on critical thinking. All in all, a good prof and class, I recommend.
Great professor overall, lost of work. Make sure when doing project to be clear and get to the point. Watch spelling and grammar error, tough on that. Little to no extra credit. So takes a mental note on attendance, it will hurt you at the end.
This Prof. turned off here brain in the 1970s. She is an old school women's lib type, and should go back to the 1960s. She is not clear, doesn't appear to understand the material, and teaches without thinking. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
I took this class SWS with Professor Mckendall and she is a great teacher. The class was a writing intensive class but she makes you a better writer. You have to read something before class everyday, and about once a week you write up a one to two page paper. All in all i would recommend this class to anyone that needs help writing.
One of the best MBA instructors I've had.
It is extremely ironic that this professor teaches a Conflict Management course. Why? She is the most hostile, un-peaceful (if that is a word), negative person I have ever met. She talks down to people and she makes you upset just sitting there listening to her. Avoid!
This is the best MBA class I have had; I actually learned something I can use every day.
She is one of the best. Since I took this class, I write better, I think better, and I understand people better.
Excellent!!!!!!
One of the best management professors that I have had at Grand Valley. Class time went very quickly. She is fun and interesting to listen to. I am going to take her again for MGT 438. I really really liked this prof.
McKendall is incredibly clear. Attendance isn't mandatory but lecture is entirely notes and she doesn't use powerpoints. best prof i've had at GV!!
The bottom line is Dr. McKendall knows her stuff. Her class was well organized and there were no suprises. She teaches information that you can actually use in practice. An excellent professor, one of the best at GVSU!
Excellent professor. Sometimes comes across as unwilling to listen to other viewpoints, but overall she knows her stuff. Extremely helpful class, but make sure you are good at grammar if you take her.
Interesting, creative teacher. I hate teams, but the team from this class was the best one I have ever been on. Warning: she doesn't put up with any crap
This can be an SWS class, and if it is she is VERY tough on writing, grammar and punctuation. Make sure you are a good writer if you take her. If you aren't then you should really take it as well, she will make you learn the skills of writing. Overall great teacher.
Is sassy and funny. Class is ALL note taking. No book, which is a breath of fresh air, but that means you HAVE to go to class. Exams aren't terrible, but aren't the easiest. Frequent homeworks and extra reading that she doesn't remind you about.
Prof definitely knows her stuff. Can easily relate the material to real life. Funny in her own way. Hws can be tricky and the readings tend to be long. NO book/PPT so GO TO CLASS! Test questions are usually just like the hw. The mc on tests can be tricky as well. Need to know more than just the concepts, details are a must.
Was an interesting class. She sometimes expects students to know details without her having taught them. I would take another class from her. I learned a great deal.
This is essentially a philosophy class that she tries to relate to business, not always very successfully. I found her to be way too opinionated to be teaching this course. She plays favorites and if you say something she doesn't like, watch out. I did admire her courageousness to discuss risque topics about GVSU in class though.
She definitely knows the material. It was presented to us in a very organized and systematic manner. She isn't afraid to "tell it like it is," which was a breath of fresh air. I would advise anyone to take this course, if only for your own personal use. As a Human Resource professor, GVSU should be honored to have her.
Good professor. I thought this class was much more interesting than other ethics courses. She used a lot of real world cases in class to help learning. Class is almost 100% class discussion. As an SWS goes the papers were not too challenging and she actually works hard to improve her students' writing.
I enjoyed this class. Its alot of class discussion and you will look forward to attending class. Also you will leave feeling like you learned something. Its not a ton of work but you do need to put some time in and you should get a good grade. She is a good professor for this class, I would recommend this to anyone.
Incredibly difficult to understand expectations, very hard grader, her opinion is the only opinion. Enjoyed what was taught but hated the class due to the professor
Good class; good professor. Useful.
Great professor and this was a very interesting class that made me think. Only caution is not to get so caught up in discussion that you forget to take notes.
Professor McKendall is very clear and organized. Her lectures are interesting and I feel I learned a lot.
Interesting subject. she has no book, uses no powerpoints. just uses an outline for us to take notes on. Do the homeworks, she collects 4 out of 12 for 40pts each. exam multiple choice questions are very tricky. Make sure to always read the readings. She asks questions during class on them and collects them & adds them to your exam for extra credit
The material for the class is very easy and straightforward, but she is quite the opposite. It was hard to get over how egotistical she could be, and her lack of understanding for opposing viewpoints. It seemed as though she felt we could offer nothing to the discussion that she didn't already know. I would never sign up for her class again.
Useful and interesting class.
Difficult but good class. You have to learn to examine your own thinking, which isn't easy
AVOID THIS CLASS. unclear direction, homework is worth more than exams and the entire class is just arguing.
This is a tough class, but I learned some things that will stay with me for life. Don't take if you don't want to work.
Great teacher. Knows material and keeps it interesting
Dr. McKendall is among the best professors I've had. Her classes fly by because the classroom discussion is so relevant, engaging, and useful for a future in any business. All the cases talked about in class are true; she is good at spurring organic classroom discussion, causing students to hone their knowledge. I would definitely take her again!
Professor McKendall was awesome! Unfortunately she left half way through the semester due to personal issue but she was amazing the time I had her! She used tons of real life scenarios to give you a better idea of the material. Decent amount of homework but it was all fairly simple and didn't take long. Heavy discussion based too!
Professor McKendall was awesome! She was super caring and really knew what she was teaching. She is heavy on discussion and will call on whoever to get the class talking. You can miss up to 3 classes before you get penalized. Pretty straight forward class and she makes it interesting with current events. Would recommend!
I loved this class. If you took BUS201 with Sanford, she has a very similar teaching style. Homework can be in depth BUT it helps you significantly for the exams. She goes over the homework in class as well. I am taking another class of hers and am super excited.
Class made me think more than any other one I have taken. Very good at generating discussion.
Class had great discussions. She asked a lot of questions I had never thought about. If you don't write well, she makes you do papers over.
This was an ethics class, and I left with more questions than answers. But I feel I gained something even though I can't really define it.
Class was harder than I expected, but I love her style of teaching. Lots of exercises and discussions.
Shes a very nice & informative professor. She has a clear layout of topics and is very easy to follow and will slow down if needed. There are pop quizes but if you do the readings they are easy. Exams can be a little difficult but its mainly the multiple choice thats hard. The "experimental" q's are just like the hw, so if you do the hw u its easy.
Would not recommend this professor
Highly recommend. Clear, organized, interesting.
Im a senior & I have never had a bad professor at GVSU until now. She is the worst grader as this was an ethics course & for some things I would get C's on because "my values are ok" or I "didnt write about the right thing". Her explanations are useless and I was constantly confused about what she expected on assignments.
Professor Mckendall is very unorganized and asks a lot of her students. She provides no rubric or outline for the papers that are written (and it is an SWS class). Her grading is ridiculous with no clear feedback, just points taken off. She can never answer a question clearly and is rude when students are unclear on the assignments.
She was very helpful for an online course. Good lectures.
Really interesting. I wish I could have taken her in a regular class because discussions are great and I would have liked that more.
McKendall is a tough grader, but if you look at the feedback and work to improve upon your mistakes, you will get good grades. I ended up passing the class with an A. I found her lectures and content to be very interesting.
Very interesting and knows HR well. Tests every week because it was an online course. Expectations were very clear, and you have to know the material.
She is very rude in general to students, especially when you have a question. She is also a tough grader and offers no explanation. I found it impossible to do well on the tests. I would avoid her if possible.
This was the most condescending and rudest professor I've had in my education. She laughs when you don't know the answers, isn't specific on grading criteria on exams, and isn't open to new ideas. As an HR major (and a typical A student) , I am considering switching my major if I will HAVE to take her in another class. dont do it.
Professor McKendall is beyond condescending. Be ready to be called on randomly and get laughed at if you give a wrong answer. Also her tests are impossible to get good grades on. I’ve always been an A student and have gotten C’s and B’s on tests with no explanation on the wrong answers and no help when I ask her why my grade was so low
Awful prof. Super rude
Do not take this professor. All exams are subjective, and she grades how she wants. It's super frustrating when your exam score is super different from others when you basically had the same answers.
Professor McKendall is my least favorite professor that I've had at Grand Valley so far. She is one of the hardest graders I have had and when you ask her to clarify why you got certain things wrong she is not helpful at all. She also expects you to know every answer all the time and when you get it wrong she's not nice about it.
If you faithfully attend class, everything is pretty straightforward.
This was the beat class I have ever taken. I will use what I learned always.
You have to go to class and do the work. Her expectations are high. She is very clear and interesting.
I had to rethink a lot of things I thought I already knew. Lots of really interesting discussion. Highly recommend.
She is the toughest grader I have ever had. If you use the feedback on your first few pieces of work, you will do well in the class. I appreciated what I learned in her class, and if you're ready for a challenge, this class is for you.
Very knowledgeable and interesting. You have to study for the tests and you will do ok.
McKendall is TOUGH, but you get in what you put out. She has very clear, set expectations on the work you turn in, and if you go to her office hours she is helpful about fixing your paper or outline. Her lectures are really thought-provoking but occasionally take subject matter over the line. Be prepared to be challenged! I'd recommend her class.
Professor McKendall is the most degrading and disrespectful professor I've ever had. She laughs at students who don't answer or who answer wrong in class. Her grading is all opinion based to her own. I highly recommend not taking Professor McKendall if you want to pass in your HR degree.
A part of me died during the 2nd exam
Professor McKendall is very knowledgeable in the HR field and teaches the concepts very well. Attendance only hurt the grade after 5 absences, the first 5 were extra credit. I suggest attending because there was no textbook. Yes, she randomly calls on all students, but it is actually very beneficial and keeps students paying attention.
Tough but amazing. Made me think. Dry sense of humor.
One of the best classes I have taken at GVSU.
I took this class hoping to learn about ethics within the business world. After taking this class, other than some basic terms and ideologies, I learned nothing about business ethics in this course. I don't understand how this is considered a management class, nothing throughout the course other than some basic terms relate to business at all.
One of my favorite classes to go to because there was interesting topics involved in the course, however she would cause be sit and panic in the parking lot before class because I was so anxious to be in a room with such a rude teacher. She made class miserable, and says she can help you but when you reach out she laughs in your face.
Best course I had at Seidman.
Very well taught. I now think I want to major in Human Resources.
I was having trouble and she was very helpful when I stopped by her office. Lots of interesting topics. Made me think.
No textbook so be prepared to write down notes that will be used for tests and homework. Pay attention in class because she would mention a fact once and it would be on the test or homework. Only collected 4 or 5 of our homework assignments when we did 7 or 8, but it was random. Easy grader, if your answer is partially wrong you still get credit
This was an interesting class where I was engaged during lectures and I feel like I will remember the topics we discussed for a long time. I am taking a lot of practical information away from this class. There are three exams and three papers. You will have to study a lot for the exams. She is a strict grader on the papers but offers rewrites.
The lectures were interesting. Calls on you randomly during class which I always hate. You need to study to do well in her test as they consist of short answer questions.
The class itself wasn't awful, but the format was terrible. The exams do not match lecture and there is no other grades outside of the paper and exam. The professor seemed so uninterested in teaching the class and struggled with blackboard and classroom technology. Bad vibes. Take a lot of notes because that's all you will have to study off of.
Three tests, three papers. Good discussions. Runs a tight ship.
I will always remember this class. Discussions were great. Tests were tough.
Pop quizes!!! The class itself wasn't awful, but the format was terrible. The exams do not match lecture and there is no other grades outside of the paper and exam. The professor seemed so uninterested in teaching the class and struggling with technology. Bad vibes. Take a lot of notes because that's all you will have to study off of.
Discussions were engaging, but the tests were no joke. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for exam prep - highly recommend using it along with the textbook.
This professor is not understanding in any sense. She is very unkind and always has something to say under her breath. She is extremely picky when grading and contradicts herself many times. She also outwardly shows her political standpoint which is inappropriate in a class setting. Would never recommend.
I did not do well on the first test. I went to her office and she took a lot of time to help me. We just got the second test back and my grade was much better.
My least fav prof. If you don't get an answer correct when she calls on you (she randomly calls on everyone) she often times makes you feel bad about it. She contradicts herself all the time. No lecture slides, no book, only her spoken lecture and the homework. HW not too difficult but too open ended for me with how she grades. Would not recommend
Professor McKendall is willing to help you but lectures are poorly giving, not a lot of content spoken in class for you to write notes on. Exams do not align with the syllabus and there is no blackboard material to help you out in exams. She randomly calls on you, so read the content ahead of time.
SWS. Have to do an outline first, which really helps with papers. Interesting discussions.
Straightforward class. No book, so you need to go to class. Really knows H R.
Her lectures were interesting, but that is all I can say. She loves to voice her opinion about politics, which is very unprofessional. You NEED to attend every class if you want anything above a B- and beware of pop-quizzes. All of the homework's were made before I was born, and she does not know how to use blackboard. Good luck...
I thought that this professor knew a lot about HR, and her lectures were interesting. I felt that all tests and homework were based on her own opinions. She consistently contradicts herself. The tests were difficult. I felt that her multiple-choice questions were made to confuse you. Not much goes into the grade book. Kinda rude and demeaning
Extra credit to attend all the lectures which you need to attend anyway as there is no textbook. All the tests and homeworks were based on lectures. This at times made lectures interesting. She knew quite a bit about HR, though due to all the changes that can happen at times she didn't have an immediate answer. Overall, she's fine, no complaints.
It was a basic (introduction) HR class. Graded on homeworks and four tests. Have to take notes and pay attention. Interesting.
I have never thought so much about morality in my life. She asked questions that I will be thinking about for a long time.
Guided notes were useful. She asks a lot of questions and wants people to participate. Made the topic interesting. My favorite class this year.
This was one of the best courses I have taken at GVSU. It is not an easy A, but it is not impossible either. For each paper, you will do an outline and if you still don't do well, you can do a rewrite. Lots of interesting discussions.
This is the basic HR class that you start the HR major with. Lots of legal information. Instructor was good and classes were interesting. She will help you if you need it. You are graded on homeworks and tests. Thank God there is no group project.
