Unbelievable teaching ability. She is very organized and helpful.

Very organized, helpful lecture notes
They're GRREAT
great notes, but the text book is not what is on the exams, final was a killer, do your homework.
Excellent notes but EXAMS ARE VERY DIFFICULT, do not recommend.
such a wonderful teacher. organized and clear teaching. easy midterm and exam. although assignments take long time
Organized, clear and concise. However, showing up to class is a must. She puts minute details from the lectures onto the exams. Assignments are very time consuming.
Just one word --- "Great"
Excellent teaching ability despite the monotone voice. Make sure you write everything down in class. assignments are a bit time consuming though.
Show up to lectures. Listen. Understand. Write notes. And you'll do just fine! (Assignments were tedious.)
O... M... G... That was a hard exam!
P...K...yeah, a hard final exam!!
very friendly. good notes.

badbadbad
Clear notes, excellent explanation, fair tests and easy to talk to. Does it get any better than that?
Great prof, very friendly and helpful.the course covers lots of material, but keep up and you will do fine.her tests are not that hard, similar to her homework.great course and great prof.
A very great professor in Economics. She 's good at teaching this statistics course. Very friendly and helpful. But the homework is a little bit too much. Yes, you will learn something useful from her!
Given the choice of all the buec333 instructors, she is probably the easiest one. Even though I work very hard to obtain a B only. But the course itself is not too easy.
Very hard course, long assignments and difficult exams. Class avg very very low so that's y she has to give 10 bonus marks to us...but still a very low class avg. Avoid her if possible.
She likes to give short assignments. If u consider 20 pages assignment are short, go ahead take her course. Prepare to buy a new keyboard after her course.
long hard assignments, hard midterms!!! well this is a difficult course, but yeh... her explanation of notes are pretty clear!!! i think she is the easiest prof who teaches BUEC 333!!
The Assignments and Exams are SOOOOO Tough&Long. Just happy that I pass! She is very nice so probably it is just a hard course. Guys, she is the only Econ prof that would make you wanna sit in the front! BEWARE:Super HOT!!
easy exams and lectures, hot looking :-))
Probably the easiest prof teaching buec 333. Assignments are well related to her lec notes, and exams are not too bad. But she's very nice and very clear in explaining the stuff. Worth taking w/ her.
can't teach! not at all.... doesn't seem to know what she's talking about... doesn't even put the effort into making her exam questions, answers would not make sense, and make you confused
Clear and concise. Pay attention to her notes and you will do well in this course.
tough course, but she explains things really well. She's about as hot as you can expect a female Business professor to be... which is to say not that hot.
The course material is VERY difficult. Explains things quite well but the material is very difficult. "Fair" exams but assignments were extremely difficult. Doesn't teach EXCEL in class but expect u to know them for assignments
she is a very nice prof, she can explain some very difficult concept to you in a very simple ways. If you don't like stat and have to take BUEC 333, I highly recommand you to take her course. Fair assignments, mid-terms and final!!! Great Prof!!!
love being in her class.
Marie makes statistics fun and exciting. Work hard though.
I dont know why I got a low grade.
Clearly explained the material and summarized it at the end. Treated you as an individual student not just a number.
Good prof. notes are all posted online, but missing some crucial information which have to be taken in lectures. Assignments are fair. Midterm is long, but pretty easy. Final is long as well, but hard.
Good teacher. Really try to help you understand. Take her time explaining things. I have to wait in a long line up for her office hours. BUEC 333 is hard, but it's do able. Must do well on homework to do well on exams. She always use one question from the homework in her exams. She is clear in her lecture. Her notes are neat.
Course is hard but she tries to make the material understandable. I got C- but I still praise her as a good prof. Very clear, organized, helpful. 'Not here to trick you' - you can count on this with her. She tests on what was taught. Just understand most of the material/concepts you will be fine. Only take 333 with her. Her teaching easily get A+.
This is hard course, but she try to make all the stuff simple. Her assigments are fair. But little bit hard on Final exam. She is the best prof for Buec 333
course is hard itself, lotsa math/stats as expected. the assignments were time-consuming but doable. and i thought the m/t and final were very fair...nothin unexpected or tricky. just study past assignment questions, lecture notes, and txtbook questions...
Excellent organization, online notes + practice questions! Fun experiments in class are good examples of real applications! It doesnt get any better than this!
400 level course, her teaching style is 180 degree different from Buec333. In 425 class she goes over concept/definitions only, no numerical examples. Gives difficult practice problems b4 midterm/final and must work on it with your classmates, o/w, near impossible to do/understand. Must ask for help at office hr! Individual presentation was decent.
OMG.....people who rated her "HOT" were out of their mind. She's ok in terms of teaching style and clearity. Her exams and assignment are at a reasonable difficulty level.
Marie is a good teacher, and is hot. She teaches the material well. I would however not take another class with her good looks are distracting as I spent most lectures fantasizing about her...
One of the best Profs. She knows how to teach. She treats students nicely. Although the assignments are pretty tough, exams are relatively easier. You will get those easy 10% if you attend all the tutorials.
Took another class with her and again, Marie was excellent! Probably the best prof I've had at SFU so far. She is crystal clear, super organized, and goes over the important material over and over until you get it. I knew exactly what to expect on the exam. Top notch!
Great prof. Made a difficult topic as easy as possible while ensuring all relevant information was understood by the class. First ECON prof I've had who wanted the class to do well.
She was good! Explained thigs really clearly and had good organization. Exams were just practice questions but a little different. No tricks here. Just straight forward do the work and do well econ class.
Handwritings are hard to recognize. The explainings of examples are totally unclear. Mid-term is easy, just copy the practice, but final is crazy hard. After final, i really do not know what i learn from her class.
Marie is awesome. Super clear, super nice and wants her students to do well. Probably the best econ prof i've had thus far.
very clear and helpful, willing to answer questions after lecture. definitely recommend to take her class
Marie is a great prof takes time to help students. She dedicated 2 lectures for review before exams. She answers emails and will schedule office hours by appointment. She wants to stimulate class discussion to help overall understanding of concepts and it sucks that the response from the class is deathly silence and blank stares.
She never reply any student's email. She is not helpful! Her midterm and final exams became very hard since this semester! Be aware of her!
She is a lazy prof. Always ends the class an hour early, and she didnt even show up for the final exam. Also her office hour is only 1 hour per week when there are 120+people in class. If your ta happens to be Mike, avoid him and attend other tutorial cause he is clueless lol
excellent professor - i liked her and her lectures a lot. she's clear and gives you everything you need to succeed in the course.
This is the type of professor students look for in fourth year. Easy going, no textbook, good feedback. Yes, this class required some practice, but this professor replied to EVERY single email. Even the one sent to her a night before the final at 10 PM. She takes the final in the 10th /11th week, and the rest is presentations. CLASS ENDS EARLY!
I really like Marie and her style of teaching, it's clear and concise. Overall she's great; however, be aware that her final exam is brutal. The final was long.. all that matters is how fast you can solve the problems in 2 hrs 30 minutes!! The midterm was okay. Aside from the final, this course was great.
Awesome 4th year course. She's smart, hot and funny. Organized course. Wants you to succeed.
She gave the most unfair final exam I have ever taken. Only gave 2 hours to finish 100 multiple choice questions, which were so tricky and difficult. She barely goes into detail in lecture, TA called off tutorials, no supervision for this course what so ever, poorly organized. Easy midterm and impossible final..
Lectures are not mandatory, as Marie reads off the slides that are all available online. All assignments are online through my EconLab and the midterm/final exam is all multiple choice. She doesn't have any marking to do since everything is multiple choice. The midterm was fine, but the final is brutal and she only gives 2 hours for 100 questions.
She's an okay prof, but reads off Powerpoint slides which are ripped straight from the textbook word for word and uploads them to canvas each week. Homework is a bunch of online quizzes which are an easy 20%. Midterm and final are all MC. The midterm was fair and the final was not fair whatsoever, probably the hardest exam I've ever taken so far.
she just reads the textbook. And makes it even more confusing then it is originally.
Marie Rekkas is by far the best professor I've had at SFU. I retook ECON 103 with her and absolutely loved her. She unlike most profs actually cares about her students. She tries to keep everything basic and straight to the point and doesn't go off topic. Her midterm was brutal but that's only because she wanted to have a well spread average!
Hard midterm, really hard final. Told us that one of the goals of the final exam is to test our ability to take tests. Her teaching style is average. Conveys the material exactly the way the textbook does, given that the slides are ripped straight from the textbook. Got final grades up pretty quick though so good job on that.
Nice, but she tells you from the start that this class will be graded on the curve. Depending on if the class does well or not on the midterm, she will adjust the final to reflect that, AKA easy midterm, killer final. She is very nice if you go to her office hours. On a last note, she does rush through lectures sometimes, so beware of that.
Super unorganized, rush through lectures all the time, all of her lecture slides are ripped off from textbook word-by-word but the way she explains it makes it even vaguer than the textbook itself. Midterm and final are all MCs but are very challenging. Got an A+ all based on self-studying through the textbook, her lectures are useless for me.
Marie is helpful and really cares about her students. Always got back to you via email asap despite her busy schedule and explained the necessary concepts to get you a good grade. Does her part to ensure you do well on tests and exams. Would definitely take more classes with her in the future.
She makes sure to explain the important concepts in class and leaves you to study the details. I have a short attention span so I really liked her quick and effective teaching style. For Econ 103, spend more time practicing and less time reading the textbook.
great prof. easy to understand. easy to look at. SFU is lucky to have her.
great professor and outstanding academic. she sets the bar high for the class. the course is not for people who won't study. SFU's best professor.
great course taught be a great prof. would take anything she teaches. course tests are fare and the material is interesting because she presents it in an interesting manner and with some humour. classes are not going to the last minute.
dr. rekkas' class isn't like the other courses where it is painful to sit thru the class. she keeps her lectures relatively brief, they are efficient, she does the topic in a good manner and brings the material to life. she starts, she finishes, and that's the class. no complaints.
MR is an excellent lecturer - easy to follow and fair in her tests.
rekkas don't wreck us. she's a good prof.
great prof. even if the material isn't that interesting. the tests are long but fair. the workload is less than most courses and she's a good speaker.
Boring lecture, read out from the slides. Contents are straight from the textbook. Useless tutorials. Gave 125 questions for the final exam involving many calculations. Past exams and MyEconLab were not helpful in preparing.
Took ECON103 with Dr. Rekkas. She's funny and engaging and makes econ (which is quite a dull subject) bearable. Her classes are graded based solely off a midterm (40%), and a final (60%) and they consist of 100+ MC questions (which I prefer). Her exams are difficult if you aren't fond of MC, and you will likely find yourself pressed for time.
She's a great prof, she gets right to the point and is efficient. Midterm was easy, final was brutal (150 MC questions all calculations). She reads off slides (ava on canvas) and goes into detail. Barely went to tutorial, it was useless our TA was no help. If you are self-motivated and good at teaching material to yourself, you should do fine!
tough course, tough tests good prof. she teaches you what you need to know and you have to take the time and effort to go outside the course material to do well on the tests and the exams.
serious class with a serious prof. don't be afraid to ask her questions. she's super smart and committed.
great prof with a serious attitude. don't come to class unprepared and falling asleep or you'll fail this course. marie is a real scholar and if you give a damn she'll help you do well. if you don't care, you'll fail.
mary is a good prof. be prepared to study.
She is very passionate about her work, and isnt afraid to share her opinion. She feels strongly about her beliefs, yet remains objective. Generally a thorough lecturer, but can be confusing at times. Tests are hard, but reasonably fair. However, the final was 20% longer than she claimed, with no time extension to match. Luckily it was all curved.
She never answered anyone's raised hands :/
great professor who gives you every chance to do well. classes are short. she doesn't talk just to hear herself. i would take more of her courses.
The lectures were planned out well enough, but the professor didn't seem to know what she was talking about at times, and felt like she lost interest in her teachings throughout the semester. Her explanations aren't very clear, and she goes through the slides very quickly.
She is a fine professor, nothing special. At times it is hard to follow along but in the long run the course it relatively simple. My mark wasn't the best because there is only a midterm and a final, and I messed up on the midterm. So no room for making mistakes, wouldn't take a class with that heavy of exams again. Overall Marie is a fine prof.
Had her for ECON 103. Mark was based off purely a mid term and a final. 40 percent and 60 percent. She often skins through power points really fast. Not bad overall
marie's rly nice! lectures r fun but i nvr paid attention & on tests it was like "what was mentioned in lecture" so i lost marks. she understands the plight of students so let me to share expensive mylab costs with 9 other people & it's helpful practice. she hates academic dishonesty & is strict on that. khan academy helped for this class
She's honestly such a great prof and teaches things very clearly. Doesn't spend extra time, just quickly gets to the point. Gives lots of good examples and is great at reiterating and explaining things to you if you ask. If youre confused see her after class, it helps!! Only complaint is that there were only two exams and they were really hard
A brilliant woman and a wonderful teacher.
40% midterm/ 60% final. No participation, no assignments, no mandatory attendance. Had 125 multiple choices in 3 hours for the final, questions are not too hard if you actually read her notes but with exam stress, 125 is A LOT to take in. Nice person though, lectures are a bit boring as she just reads of the slides.
excellent professor and a very nice person if you need help after class. don't be afraid to email her or show up at her office.
Be ready to study on your own. As during online delivery of lectures, she is just recording lectures with poor audio and isn't there to help you. She doesn't even hold the tutorial sessions and when asked to do so, makes poor excuses. Lastly in my perspective she might be a good researcher but doesn't know how to teach and expects you know it all.
She just made a presentation copy and pasting from the book, and reads the formulas. She mentions, she doesn't want to "overwhelm" us with math and never explains the formulas in detailed and everything on the exam requires formulas. No tutorial, no office hours, hard to reach the prof. Please find another prof.
if you are taking econ courses with this Professor or you are planning to take her courses, the only thing that i can say is "RUN". not only that you are 100% study on you own, but also the power point are very simple and most of them are from textbook. The test is very hard, and the time that she provided is not enough. NEVER TAKING AGAIN!!
"Good" prof, you'll get depressed taking her course. Things appeared on the exams never shown up in her lecture slides. Her slides are all directly from the textbook. Be ready to fail if you are happy to take her course. Get ready to get depression and see doctors. glhf.
She is a ridiculous professor, doesn't explain and expects you'll know it all. Don't take this course with her, I don't know how sfu is letting her teach.
She reads off the slides which are from the book. In the online class, she never wrote down anything or solved any formula on screen. Just reading through. I found that youtube videos were better at explaining all concepts. Never take from her again.
Honestly, throughout my whole uni life I have never seen a lazy and uncaring prof like her. Doesn't reply to emails or bother trying to communicate with us at all. The exams didn't have anything to do with the course materials she gave us(study the book). The practice questions she gave had answers for wrong questions. Avoid her at all cost!!!!!!
Everything - lectures, homework, exams - is from Pearson. I only attended the class on the first day and on exams, and never went to any tutorials. Just read each chapter in the book and do the quiz every week. The exams are all MC and closely match with the textbook. Very forgettable experience, maybe this class is too low-level for her to care.
She is a knowledgeable scholar alright. Yet she is uncaring and aloof. Grades aside, it is easy to feel depressed due to her icy personality and bad attitude to students.
amazing lectures. she is the cream of the crop for this department and this university. you should get into her course. she's special and super smart. a real professor.
Prof Rekkas is knowledgeable, but she's lazy. Always cancels office hours even when you ask her personally, re-uses old tests as practice exams even though we don't do the same material anymore, and doesn't add the material we did do. Her lectures are drawn out in some places, and rushed in others. On the plus side, she does respond to emails quick
Posts Useless drawn out lectures without live component and goes on tangents to show how smart she is. You will need the Ta's to teach you this course. The course turned out to be way more test heavy then syllabus posted on course description. I guess she could be worse though.
The most difficult class I have ever taken, avoid to enrol her class if you can.
Lots of silly-talk during lecture. Syllabus was more test heavy then one posted on course description. Average grade was lower then other 333 classes.
what is she even saying????
Not gonna lie, I sleep in her class and still get A's. Her slides have spelling errors, and it's mostly self taught. Fortunately, her exams are Multiple choice, and economics is pretty easy if you study hard. If you do well in her class, it's because you taught yourself.
Great professor. Pay attention and you'll learn a lot.
good prof. hot prof. angry prof. smart prof.
I specifically made an account to leave a review after 5 years of using this site and never writing a single review. This proff is lazy af. Practice Qs assigned do not have any explanation to how she found the solution, the textbook doesn't have solutions. Useless TA spends 30 mins per question waiting for her to write the solution out.
Honestly, awful prof. Her lectures are 40+ slides that are copied and pasted straight from the textbook. Not much explanation for the lectures she is providing. Textbook is no help either. She expects students to know every equation provided, not sure why. Terrible course content, terrible lectures all combined with a poor prof. AVOID Marie Rekkas!
Terrible teacher. In my 4 years at SFU I am never encountered a prof like her. She is terrible. Not sure why she is allowed to teach and she is earning some stupid money by copying the textbook word for word. If you take her, you will need to go to a therapist. Do not take her class for the betterment of your mental health.
2 midterms, the highest one is worth 40%. The Final is worth 60%. Slides are a summary of the textbook. Do my lab questions and the practice tests posted for review and you should do okay.
I heard that Douglas is hard on tests so I chose Marie. But she teaches badly and just read off the slides which seems like she didn't prepare for the lecture just do it year by year. For our final, she gave us 80 questions and we only are given two hours to finish. I do not understand what is her problem.
Rekkas brushes over topics and doesn't go much in depth. This course becomes stressful as your grade is based solely on midterm (40%) and final (60%). Grind mylab and stay on/above the curve and you should be okay. Tutorials aren't mandatory, and the final was tough. Only had 2 hours to complete 80 MC, (not enough time).
Class is 40% midterm and 60% Final All MC, If you like this format, I would definitely recommend taking the class with Marie. Exams are based of past exams and MyLab Questions, If you grind those out then the tests are pretty easy. Compared to the other teachers, Marie is a good choice.
no assignments, just graded on midterm and final, both were very hard, esp the final. don't bother coming to lectures cuz rekkas just reads off of slides. exam questions were very different from practice questions on mylab and were very difficult. the final was so rough I have ptsd from it.
Horrible prof, avoid at all costs. Doesn't care about his students or if they pass, does not teach anything remotely close to the material on the exams and doesn't give sufficient time to figure it out. She should not be teaching it's as if she wants the entire class to fail.
Some professors make you feel like their research is the most important thing in the world and that their teaching just doesn't matter anymore. This is that professor.
Overall really difficult course and your grade is completely reliant on who your TA is but Rekkas is really approachable and gave good study tips
Horrible class
Good prof to talk to, lectures weren't the most interesting but she was very fair with her tests.
Explains concepts well, but does not provide any study materials unless you pay for her study plan. I would recommend just reviewing and rewriting class slides, as well as paying attention to lectures and watching some videos on course subjects. You'll be alright if you can stay above average.
Only graded on best midterm out of 2, so she takes the best one. midterm is 40% and final is 60%. No homework and tutorials are suggested but not mandatory. Get mylab and grind it. Curved my calculated final from 45 to a C.
Overcomplicates lectures. Easy class if you know how to think.
The way that Marie teaches the class is not for everyone. I personally really liked the class structure because I could (and did) skip going to lectures, tutorials and literally just read the textbook before every exam and scored decently If you want to get through 103 with minimal effort and time, I suggest taking it with Marie over Doug Allen.
Marie is really kind and always ready to help. Her classes and expectation are simple and clear. She really cares whether you understand or not and will always take the extra time to explain concepts to you. One of the best professors at SFU in my opinion.
Great prof. Lecture can be dry but thats just the material. Best bet is to go to office hours, she's very helpful and relaxed. One of my fav profs at SFU!
I would recommend going through MyLab problem sets from each chapter consistency. The lecture slides are a good summary of the formulas and graphs.
I was told this class is hard, but it isn't. Marie is a great teacher, she explains in a way that is very clear and understandable. The midterm was very fair, I thought it would be much harder. I didn't read the textbook, and she sometimes finishes class early. Some people may find her boring, but to get a good mark go to lectures to understand!
She also marked very fairly. Her midterm and final were incredibly fair, stuff is taken straight from homework or in class examples. The content isn't very difficult. I was told that this class was hard but it is really easy if you remotely put effort and practice.
Marie is a great teacher, one of the best for an introductory Econ course. There are no tricks to her class, midterms/final are just what you would expect from the tutorials/lecture material/MyLab questions. Only downside is that the class grading is all exams. I believe 40% midterm, 60% final (took this class in Fall 2021). Strongly recommend.
Lectures are clear, no recording or filled slides. Tutorials go through textbook example questions, not mandatory but helpful. Midterm was very easy and Final was just double the length. Marie encouraged questions and was always very good at explaining material.
Marie is a fair grader. Midterms and finals are straightforward if you utilize resources like MyLab and Unstuck AI for study prep. Attendance is mandatory, but the content isn't overly difficult if you put in the work.
Grade is split between weekly quizzes (unlimited attempts), midterm, and final. Everything is based off the lectures, she is passionate and entertaining. She always encourages questions and student feedback. Truly one of the best profs I've had. Midterm was easy - MC questions taken directly from quizzes. Final was the same just a little longer.
Marie is one of the most organized and clear instructors I've had. She explains concepts in a way that's easy to understand —no surprises on the exams. Her exams are fair and based on lecture material, which really helps with preparation. She's also quick to respond to emails and genuinely cares about helping students. Highly recommend!
Gives unnecessary marked quizzes that are very long, huge timewasters that after the first twenty minutes contribute practically nothing to one's learning. Does not teach the class in an effective method and places importance on things she deems important but they really just waste your time. She is respectful.
Very good prof, explains concepts clearly and gives plenty of hints on what to expect on exams. Exams were extremely fair and exam marking was very fair. If you do the tutorials and read the lecture slides and understand the quiz questions you will be fine. Her multiple choice questions are the exact same from the quiz, no tricks or twists.
Lectures were a bit dry at times
Pretty sure they changed how they structured the new ECON 103 tests compared to previous years as the practice exams provided were nothing like it was previously. However if you do all the quizzes she assigns and make sure you understand it, as well as understand how to calculate tax revenue and draw all the graphs, you should be able to get A.
Marie is a very good professor, knows her topic but she sometimes get confused. Always available in office hours and always happy to help.
Her exams were hard but it balanced out because they were marked generously and curved. Very kind and approachable prof and she explained things well. Tutorial attendance matters and the online quizzes take very long to do as they range from 30-70 questions every week.
Professor Rekkas is an amazing professor, this course compared to ECON 105 was so much easier and it was mainly because she taught so well. As long as you go to lectures and do the homework, tutorial, and sample exams you will do well in the course.
I was a TA for this course. My opinion: focus on the problems/questions she covers in class lectures. Exam questions will reflect those. The short questions are worth a lot of marks and are very mathematical; they are somewhat similar to past exams that will be posted on Canvas, but mostly similar to the problems covered in class.
People who say she's bad usually don't study or put in effort. She's kind and gives solid exam hints. Canvas quizzes (open book, unlimited tries, 15%) mirror the midterm and final 1:1 in multiple-choice format. She also curved grades generously. If basic economics is too hard, consider marrying a rich guy or an old person and inherit their will.
