This professor is very organized- has the class notes already made out for you to download. You know exactly what is expected of you; she even puts together Exam study guides. It's also helpful that she doesn't collect homework. My experience of her 1-on-1 has been very pleasant. In short: there is no mystery to her class. Recommended.
Marie is a very difficult teacher and does slow down for anything. There is very little time for questions and not any helpful handouts or practice tests to use. Testing and quizzes are given in the same week. Try hard not to take her for chemistry. She will give you chem 130 tests for 101
she talks pretty fast and sometimes glosses over some important things, but overall she is a good teacher. tests and quizzes are graded right away, but it took a while for lab assignments and other homework.
Marie is very clear, does move a little fast, but has great study guides and explains when needed. Made class fun and I highly recommend her!!
She is super organized and knows her stuff. You won't get lost about the class content because she goes through it very thoroughly.
She is extremely organized and helpful. All the notes she prepares for you and you print off her site prior to class. Her tests can be challenging, but if you are keeping up with her and doing practice problems its fine. I enjoyed her class! She is a great teacher.
Marie is a wonderful teacher! All material is gone over in class so you aren't left with wondering how to do your homework. It is inaccurate to say she is a "difficult" teacher, I think her to be very fair. It is difficult course material, and much is covered in the course. Blame that on the school system.
I've seen her be rude to other students, for one thing. She doesn't stop for questipns and also, she's weird.
She's very clear and utilizes extremely helpful notes (you must download/print them). She makes every effort to give you as many points as possible on exams. The only nagative abouther class is that her grading scale sucks. You must recieve a 76% to get a 2.0!
so hard to get good grade in this class... exams are so hard but she actually seem really nice. she is maybe really interesting outside of class.
She is very nice. I like her class.
Why no chili pepper? One of the best teachers I've had in my whole academic career. Very organized, tests are fair, gives group quizzes, and is helpful outside of class. Has a good sense of humor among all of the jokesters, and you can tell she is really passionate about chemistry. And, if by weird you mean cute, then I totally agree!
She is a wonderful teacher. She explains concisely. Everything is well organized and clear. Her homepage has very thing you need for her class: printout, exam guidelines. Highly recommanded!!!
i have took her class at chem 139 and chem 140, i also get really high grade for those class. she is really organized, lectures notes have almost everything you need for quizzes and exams. i love study with her a lot, she always help you if you have any questions. best teacher i ever had. and now i am taking chem 150 of her too.
She's pretty organized, I've learned a lot, didn't have to read the textbook at all.
Her notes are very helpful. you dont even need to read out of the textbook cause her lecture notes tells all the main stuff you need to know. quizes and exams are fair.
Best chemistry teacher you can get, even though the overall class GPA is pretty low, but she is extremely helpful and nice. Knowledgeable and fun to talk to. Love her, take her class but study hard!
Excellent teacher. Handouts are extremely helpful. Teaching style is well-paced with lots of examples and lots of in-class problems (with time to work on them). I didn't open the textbook even once this quarter.
Even though you understand whatever she said, you never get good grade in this class. class average even less than 70%, which is less than 2.0
Great teacher
Prof seems to be very organized but shows no clarity and rushes through a fifty min class with lots of material to learn she has one on one time with you but feels like she isn't going to take the time out to reteach what you have difficulties with during office hours and her grading sucks ass might i add she doesn't drop your lowest grade and for
I enjoyed Dr. Villarba very much. She organizes the curriculum to make learning very easy. She also gives very clear study guides for the exams. The class is challenging however and I barely hung on to my 4.0.
Dr. Villarba was incredible. I was feeling a bit anxious seeing as how I had scored a 1.8 in Wick's 139. She's really helpful and places notes online for you to print out. I missed the last section of her class, and still ended up with a 92% after the final. Pay attention and do the worksheets. You really can't go wrong with a teacher like Marie.
Come to class PREPARED/READ notes because she will go through it quickly. Everything is hands on and its a GREAT learning technique for the memory.Come to class everyday, you will have a difficult time learning the material alone. She is available during office hrs & at the tutoring center. Studying/attending class daily is the key to success!
This instructor moves VERY QUICKLY through the material so if you get behind it is extremely difficult to catch up. You need to have lots of time to do homework and study on your own to do well in this class. She is also a very tough grader. Attention do detail is very important in her classes. Personally she is very nice but a tough professor.
Marie is amazing. You absolutely have to come to class every day and not slack on your notes, because she moves incredibly fast and you will fall behind without her explaining what's going on. If you are dedicated, she is absolutely the best.
Dr. V was an excellent teacher... The class is difficult if you have never taken a chemistry class, but Dr. V explains things well and works problems during class, so if you show up and study HARD you will do well... Also she makes herself available in her office hours and in the Chem tutoring lab.
Tests and quiz material are much harder than assigned problems and it seems she enjoys tripping students up. Inconsistent in grading, will provide direction and then totally annihilate you when it comes to grading because she has contradicted herself. She is too picky about minor things and should focus more on ensuring we understand the topics.
The subject is interesting, and Marie tried her best to explain it. Her notes were easy to follow and her words were clear. The exams are hard but her grading is extremely harder. The book work are crazy and requires 4 hours of studying per night, but it is not required. I recommend her greatly because she is so up to date, especially her website
Marie is a good teacher and her notes were easy to follow. Honestly there just isn't enough time in the quarter to grasp all concepts covered, well enough to do good on exams and quizzes. You seriously must go over the material everyday for an extended amount of time. I wouldn't consider working and being a full time student while taking the class.
Took her winter qrt and she's one of the worst Chem teacher Id ever had. She goes by slideshows and rarely use the board. I wish I had dropped her class when I had the chance. I thought I was going to end up with a good grade but I have to retake this class because she misled me to believe that my grade was going to be good enough to not retake it.
Really great lecturer and definitely knows her stuff! This class moves very quickly and you will have to review your notes often. Tests and quizzes can be challenging and she is a somewhat picky grader, but overall this was a good class and I learned a lot! I would take another class with her.
She is very knowledgeable and really cares about helping her students succeed. She is not necessarily an "easy" teacher to pass, but you will know the material very thoroughly by end of her class.
Mixed feelings about this teacher. Wonderful person, and obviously knows her stuff. However, tries to trick you every chance she gets. On every single quiz or exam there are problems that are ten times as hard as anything seen in lecture/hw. Workload is also ridiculous. 6 credit class but feels like you're taking 10. Very fast pace throughout.
a good teacher
Her quizzes feel like midterms. She assigns an insane amount of homework. Her tests are ridiculously difficult and lengthy. Her class is hard to pass and easy to fail.
Dr. Villarba was probably one of the best chemistry instructors at SCCC. Having taken her class, I realized that she has really prepared me well for my transition to a four year school.
She is extremely intelligent and genuinely wants her students to learn the materials. Of course chem is never easy and if you are a slacker then you will fail this class.
One of the best learning experiences I've ever had. Of course I had to work my ass off to get an A in this class but overall, take this class if you truly want to learn chemistry. Her lab reports could be a little tough but hey, this is college level chem
Too bad! highly not recommend.if your take her class, you will have too much homework to do every day. You will spend all time doing those every day and you will have no time on the other classes!
she is a good teacher. but too much homework, you may need to spend about 3-4 hours to finish it. if you take her class, just focus on her lecture notes, and take note on it, so you will receive a good grade.
Well, as I noticed it is more important to do good math than understand what you are learning. If you think your grades are fine, it is not. Even thought you will have good percentage in canvas your grade will end up lower. In case if you want to cry every time you receive a grade, this class is definitely for you.
This woman pours her heart out for the chemistry students. But she's also got quite the brain: she is super intelligent and will teach you to think critically and apply your knowledge. Examine your life and choose whether or not you're up for the challenge of college-level chemistry. This class is extremely difficult. You've been warned!
Dr. Villarba is still one of the best teachers I've ever had. She goes really fast and chemistry will seem very difficult but she's always willing to help clarify during office hours. Her exams are very difficult however they are fair. She teaches you everything that you need to know to pass the class, just put in work! Good luck you can do it!
Marie Villarba is fluent in the language of Chemistry but not as impressive when it comes to English; for it would seem that she does not know what "Introduction" means. This woman imagines herself in a yawning lecture hall, with a booming command of her subject. Yet there she is, in a small, fluorescent lit room... Taking it out on you.
Dr. Villarba is an amazingly smart woman. She teaches a mean class, so prepare yourself for the toughest whirlwind of chemistry you've ever experienced. She's one of the best teachers I've ever had, extremely knowledgeable, just wish I could've passed
I love the way she explains things. Though she is quite fast, she provides excellent notes. She is very clear. I would definitely take her again. She enables student to build a strong foundation in Chemistry. Also, she is a genius, she can answer all the questions students asked.
Tests are very tough and there are a lot of homework (written and on canvas) but she's still an awesome teacher nevertheless. such a genius
Most helpful teacher i have ever had. Her tests were really hard, but she often gives extra credit to redeem yourselves. Take her!
This is a 6 credit course that feels like an 8 credit course. You will have to work really hard in this class, but you will learn alot. Her class was extremely organized. The tests are harder than the lecture and homework, but this is consistent within the department. The textbook was not the best.
I didn't take Marie's chem class, but I feel like I did after using her slides, worksheets and practice tests as a resource during 162 with Dr. Shultz. Marie's website saved me this quarter.
I never want to take this teacher's lecture. She gave us tons of homework. I mean, in Chem 161, we had 10 chapter's to learn and each chapter you need to do more than 100 hand-written problems, sometimes, more than 150. At the same time, she has lab pres and lab reports and she is a tough grader to grade your formal lab reports.
B/C limit TLDR Pro: Organized Transparent (Will know exactly what will be on the test / quiz) If willing to take 10% hit, HW is unnecessary to do well (her packets are all you need) Cares for students (if not doing well she will email you to meet one on one) Group quizzes (so choose wisely) Cons: Insane amount of homework only worth 10% Fast paced
This class was lecture heavy and gave out insane amount of homework, 200 - 500 problems a week from the text book. Was a very boring lecturer and does not care for her students.
There is not enough time in the day for this class. There is an insane amount of homework every week, group quizzes and lots of lecture. She cares about her students and will meet one on one but otherwise speeds through lecture with minimal examples. Half the class dropped. I would recommend taking this class with a really light load or not at all
Yes she is tough. Yes she will occupy all your time. Tests won't be easy. BUT you will learn A LOT. I dropped two general chemistry prior to taking Marie- Yes they were easier in terms of tests etc. BUT Marie will dig your brain. If you're the type who likes straightforward teachers, Marie is for you. YOU WILL LEARN A LOT!
She could have been perfect! You know exactly what to expect. Gives review materials before quizzes and exams. Straightforward. Lots of homework BUT... Exams are very time limited. You will know the answers you just won't have enough time to answer them because there are so many questions-6 pages-causing your grade to stoop down!!
This is a class that I myself wouldn't take if I didn't have the intention to truly challenge myself and focus my energy on this beautiful subject. She is a professor who loves what she teaches and has an immense amount of knowledge to share if you let her. She also makes real world references to better build the picture, and enhance the experience
Her lectures and her general demeanor seem robotic at first, so she takes some getting used to, but once you do, her classes are fine.
I really enjoyed her class a lot! She really wanted us to learn the material so there was more work but it's worth doing it all. This class really sets you up for success!
Printed-out chapter lecture notes, group quizzes, ALEKS homework... Initially I dreaded chemistry but left the class loving it! She did go through the slides pretty quickly, but is always open to answering questions. At first I wasn't used to her toughness in grading, but it actually motivated to me work harder. I ended the class with a 4.0.
The homework load was lighter than I expected after reading some of these reviews. We were assigned a textbook but never any homework from it and I did not use the textbook at all. Marie is EXTREMELY knowledgeable about chem and always willing to help if you need it. I learned a lot despite having already taking AP Chem the year before I took her.
She is an amazing professor! She is a knowledgeable, gentle, and well-organized lecture. However, her speaking might be fast for international students. One more! Attend the class every day! if you are not, you will miss a lot.
She forgets its a prep class and our online HW is easy at it should be while the exams she makes are way harder and the class average is usually close to failing
She is very nice in general, but be aware of a lot of work. However its worth it for chemistry because you will understand it at the end and will remember forever. She takes you through concepts quickly and clearly(wont waste your time). The best thing (I love) about her are the chapter notes(no textbook, but follows curriculum).
She has the harshest grading scale Ive ever known. Never take her class if you want an A
If you like rote-learning, shes great. She spends lots of time drilling practice problems, and its pretty effective. However, if youre an intuitive/conceptual learner, this will be completely unhelpful to you, and you should probably find a different teacher.
Villarba is a very brilliant professor, very caring, very knowledgeable; just the TOUGHEST grader I have ever had. Very exam heavy, SO much unnecessary busy work for labs and exams, very tough grader. I had a pretty solid 3.8 cumulative, so I'm not unintelligent by any means, but I had to drop the class because she was making it impossible to pass.
She is the worst professor Ive even taken.
She would be the last option I have to take
This professor will chop 2 letter grades off just for a sigfig error. I have spent more than 20 hours a week studying for this class and am never prepared for quizzes or exams. She tests on material she doesn't teach. Cutthroat and unforgiving when its comes to her grading, she expects you to be a phd level. you will have no time for other classes
ridiculous to allow this person to hold the title of professor. assigning and grading work is not the only role of a teacher but it is all you will get from her. she is not helpful, unwilling to work with students and will not prepare you to be successful on her quizzes and exams. avoid at all costs!!!
probably good professor pre-covid, but im a 4.0 student, even received a 4.0 in chem 161. But her tests are impossible, every single test i ran out of time with about 30% left unfinished. Even if every answer was correct id often get 70% on exam just due to time limit. EVERYONE STRUGGLED. Grades heavy on tests, uses aleks, oblivious to her issues.
Very organized and to-the-point in lecture, and does not ramble. Tough and fast-paced, but clear, helpful, and super knowledgable. Her classes are a lot of work, but she is very direct about what she expects, and gave me an excellent foundation in chemistry. Most of the material you need to know are in lecture notes, not the textbook.
Dr. Villarba is a clear and concise instructor. Each lecture was fast paced- I ended up getting tutoring help often. Endless amounts of HW on ALEKS. Endless... I appreciated Dr. Villarba giving us 10 minute breaks in the middle of our zoom class. This helped clear out the "swamp brain" and refocus (this class can get overwhelming at times).
She talks pretty fast, but I love how concise she is. Extremely professional, very intelligent, worthy of being called "Dr. V." Even if you miss parts of the lecture, you can always go to her after class or during office hours. She is readily available and eager to help. I used to hate chemistry, but she helped me have fun with it.
avoid her.
not recommended for international students, speaking too fast, long tests in a short time.
Grade is very test heavy. No practice exams. There is exam study guides but they lack things that are on the exams. Lectures are long, dry, hard to process and she often reads straight off the notes without explaining clearly. Take a different professor if you can and if not prepare to spend many hours on studying and homework.
Too many exams.
I respect her but i she does not know how to teach. there is so much homework, she will definitely help if you ask but i honestly dont find her the most approachable. lectures are hard to follow.
you will fall behind. if u take this class, this will be the only thing u do all quarter
I don't think she's as tough/unapproachable as she seems, she's the best chem prof at central but is way nicer than they'll be to you at UW. She moves fast but is very clear. Her lecture material is way more important for tests than ALEKs is so dw about not understanding everything. Always do the extra credit, even if you have no idea how to solve.
just some important advice for quizzes/exams -- for questions like "explain why" "describe" etc, write a whole phd thesis. Even if you touch on every aspect that she claims she was looking for , she might still not give you the whole credit.
She's super nice and caring but goes through materials super quickly, no practice exams. Her tests are long and difficult, but not impossible if you study, just make sure you do those extra credits on the exams, no matter if you don't know the answer. She uses practice problems a lot, so if you learn conceptually, take another prof.
she was so sweet
Very monotonous lectures, going as fast as possible through lecture content without making sure that students fully understand. Extremely strict grading and MANY quizzes and exams (5-6 quizzes and 3-4 exams, excluding the final). Expects her class to be every students top priority in life.
