Seems a bit too moody to be an effective educator...had trouble at times determining if she was a student or my professor. Her tests are a bit picky...avoid her if you have the chance

I took her class online during the summer. she was a nice teacher in the beginning but as soon as you email her asking about a grade you received, she doesnt explain why you got the grade you got. also after i emailed her, my grades on EVERYTHING dropped. I was putting in the same effort that i was before, receiving 100% after emailing her, 80%..

I didn't like her. You'll know if she likes you or not in the first couple weeks of class. She is also a very picky grader and does a terrible job responding to e-mails. It's near impossible to set up a time to meet her in person, and she has limited availability anyways. Nothing is every good enough for her, and I'm an A student. AVOID HER.

Nothing is ever good enough for her. Make sure you follow the book exactly for doing speech outlines. God forbid, if you have five points in your intro instead of four she will take points off. If you submit work before the due date, miss something, and resubmit its she won't reconsider or give points back.

HORRIBLE. I am a student that can get A's and B's no problem... until I met her. She is god awful and does not work WITH students at all. She is super bossy and NEVER makes exceptions for anything. I once visited her during office hours, concerned with a grade, and she said she was mad I was even there, my grade was fine in her eyes. Just awful.

Avoid this professor at all costs. She is the toughest grader I have ever had and does not care about your grade at all. I'm pretty sure she enjoys giving out F's. If you make one small mistake on the homewcork or speeches she is not understanding whatsoever and will give you a bad grade, no matter how hard you try to fix it. Horrible.

Marieke Spiegelhoff has made UW-Whitewater a unpleasant experience for me. I wouldn't considered Speigelhoff a supportive teacher. She has unrealistic high expectations for beginners and has proven she cannot offer any help. It seems as if she cares more about the curriculum more than her students. Her lessons plans are confusing at times.

Don't even think about it.

As a person who hates public speaking as it is, my experience with this professor was a nightmare. She has ridiculous expectations for a 100 level course and takes off points for the smallest of mistakes. Just awful.

Avoid this professor at all costs. I'm honestly baffled that there are any half-way decent reviews of her at all. Will take significant points for rediculous things, and when confronted about it, will blame it entirely on you. Will not give specifications for assignments, then slash your grade when you don't adhere to them. BEWARE!

Don't recommend taking her at all. She deducts a lot of points for minor mistakes. She also doesn't allow redo's when you try to fix your mistakes. She isn't helpful when you try to be successful in her class. Expectations for her students are very high as well, she isn't good at explaining her requirements for an assignment.

DON'T TAKE! She's the worst professor I've had. Incredibly rude and disrespectful! Says one thing, you do it the way she says and she takes points off and states that she "meant it a different way". She took 4% off my grade people I forgot to staple and would talk badly about students to other students in class. Her grading is not clear at all!

Spiegelhoff is one of the worst professors I've ever had. She made me hate coming to class and couldn't care less about students. I warn everyone I know not to take her! She says she has a clear grading system but random things that you don't know about pop up and surprise you. She even argued with a student for a month over email. NO NO NO NEVER

If I could give her a lower score than a 1, I would. She was an absolutely rude, inconsiderate teacher and I am so glad I will never have her again. Unclear grading even though she claims everything is drawn out. Can be very disrespectful and treat students like children. The worst professor I've ever had!

Generally teachers have a good idea of when a student is asking for help on something, she does too. But instead of actively trying to help a student she will try to avoid any extra work for herself and be rude and curve you away. Tough grader, seems like her and the class setup works against you rather then with you.

Hands down the pickiest teacher I've ever had. Despite following her suggestions, she will still find a way to pick out numerous flaws within your work. I'm an A student, and pushed myself to get an A. But I'm almost positive its impossible to achieve anything higher than a B in her online course. If you value your GPA, stay far away from her class

Took this course online and had to record my speeches. One friend took the video and panned over to my visual aid for two seconds and she took off 75% of my grade because she couldnt see if I was reading directly off the notecards or not. When I talked to her about it, she said she couldnt do anything. TAKING HER WAS A HUGE REGRET! Never again!

Marieke is an absolutely awful professor. Took her online Comm 110 course and it is absolutely impossible to receive any grade higher than a C. She constantly takes off points for no reason or for reasons that she does not specify. She is SO picky about every little detail. DO NOT TAKE HER FOR ANY COURSE. The university should re-evaluate her.

Just awful. Grades insanely hard. The worst professor I have ever had. It's nearly impossible to get an A on a speech or even a speech outline. The way she grades is insane. Don't take her if you want to get an A for Comm 110. The best you can expect is probably a B. This class is supposed to be easy if you just do the work, but not for Marieke.

She grades very hard and does not give any opportunity to gain back points. No extra credit and you have so.. many.. assignments. i have a D and I am a A and B student.

Horrible. Extremely tough grader, ridiculously unreasonable. Will make you approve speech topics before speech outline. She did not approve my topics and never responded to my emails so my outline was late and she did not care. Said I should try to meet with her in person instead, even though email should the primary communication for online class.

Terrible instructor. Very ambiguous with instructions on papers, rude at times, pompous, and clearly doesn't have "time" to do her job and teach as she canceled class more than four times already this semester and is never available outside of class (she is only on campus two days a week). This is a 200 level course and she is expecting 400 level.

This is the worst professor i've ever had. She is very inconsiderate and I didn't feel respected in the class. She really doesn't do a good job as a teacher would never recommend to anyone

This is the worst professor i've ever experienced. Instead of taking partial credit off for the wrong format on an outline she'll give you a zero. This is an online class and she has no exceptions for technology issues, i submitted a file and it corrupted and canvas said it was a technology issue, she just gives a zero

She is an awful human. I hope she reads this. She is unprofessional and very unintelligent. I could for a fact give a better lecture than her. She is such a fake person and has a truly mean heart. Grades very bias and plays favorites. She is a poor presenter as well. I did not learn anything in her class. Blames her bad lectures on fostering kids.

Throughout the semester we were asked many times to be patient with her as she cancelled class many times. But if we were to miss more than twice there would be no forgiveness. Her grading is also incredibly picky and she won't specify what she wants until after you have done the assignment wrong. Classes ended short almost every day.

By far the worst professor I have ever had. I have struggled with school due to my learning disability and yet she still did close to nothing to help me at all with that. Courses related to this, I have got nothing less than an A. DO NOT take her as a professor, you will immediately regret it.

She is very confrontational and is not afraid to yell at you through email or embarrass you in class. I disliked that she has strict grading but does not tell students all that is expected. I recommend you find another professor for this gened that takes their actions into consideration.

Worst professor Ive ever had! Dont take her! Shes rude, condescending and not accommodating in anyway. She refuses to listen or let you explain what your intentions are for your speeches and assignments. Its really disappointing to have a professor who you can tell doesnt care if you succeed or not. Most ridiculous 110 level course I have ever taken at UWW. Honestly the worst professor I have had yet at UWW and not because it was a difficult course. Her grading is completely irrational and unclear. Do not take this course you will regret it.

She doesn't care about her students passing her class. She does not let students try to explain their ideas for their speeches, she just says they aren't good, or won't be able to give them. She is by far the worst professor here, and this class is literally online. I have yet to get 100% on assignments because she expects more than she says. Bad!

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Wish I heeded to that advice before taking her class. I'm a 5th year student, had a 4.0 GPA until this class, and I have never seen a professor as bad. She is literally the worst. If it is not done the way she would do it, it's wrong. She takes forever to grade and answer emails. I would advise no one to take her class unless you want constant frustration from being wrong about everything. Nothing about her is redeemable.

One of the worst professors I've ever had-- super tough and unclear grader, makes unnecessarily rude comments, and is overall completely unhelpful. She is very hard to work with and forget trying to ask her to clarify instructions or asking her any questions about assignments. Whatever you do, do not take a class from her.

In my opinion, she is not a good professor whatsoever. She could careless about any of her students. I seriously don't have anything postive to say. All I'm saying is that if you're considering taking this class online with her- don't. You're better off with a different professor in person. She doesn't care. Save yourself the trouble.

Marieke does not care about you or your grade in the class, she is not lenient towards anyone for any reason, and is quite possibly the toughest grader I've ever come across. Class mean for speeches being under 55% represents how little she cares about her students.

Overall, Marieke is a very tough grading professor. I took her as an online course and everything was extremely nit picked. There is Absolutely no room for leeway so dont think you can even turn an assignment in a hour late. She also has instructions all over the place In Canvas and you have to scroll pages to find what you want. Very exhausting.

This professor grades too harsh for a class that everyone needs to take in order to graduate. They are not understanding and have a take it or leave it attitude. I was left feeling inadequate as a student.

Do NOT take this course. I am currently in the heat of the course at the moment. I will be taking these reviews alongside several exchanges with the Professor to the Dean following the ending of my course with her. I have never once had to write a review on here. As students, we should not be subjected to this amount of mental torture.

I have never written a review on here before, but after taking a class with Marieke, I felt that I should. Marieke's organization was bad. When I emailed her with a question, she gave me a very sarcastic response. The worst of this class was the grading. To say that this professor is nitpicky is an understatement. Do NOT take this class with her.

DO NOT TAKE 8 WEEK COMM 110 CLASS!! I am in 18 credits but I have more work in this 3 credit class, compared to my other 15 credits. Her grading is only based on sentence requirements, and her own personal opinions. Absolutely horrible. I never got full points on any assignments. Outlines take ages and are not necessary :/ She should not teach.

I've never been so happy this class was over. It was a 8 week class which went really fast but that wasn't even the worst part. The grading was terrible. She didn't care if it was a good reflection she only cared if it was 5 sentences long. The class was organized well. But you will never get full point, no matter how hard you tried.

I had a very hard time with Dr. Spiegelhoff for a variety of reasons. She's very tough on grading and will take away points for even the smallest mistake. Her quizzes are based on the textbook however there are trick questions scattered throughout so watch out. Her emails are not helpful and her instructions are confusing, but she got back quickly.

Never had this professor, but she is a nogo. My girlfriend took her COMM110, I had taken mine in person the previous semester. She has no idea how to teach public speaking. Outline requirements sound like 5 page essay guidelines. Only cares about content and research, rather than speaking abilities, and teaching students how to effectively present.

It was frustrating because she never acted like she cared about her students.

She means well but not everyone is a professional speaker and she has unclear directions.

For the love of god please do not take this professor if it's the last thing you do. Marieke found any and every way to try to fail me. I am normally a good student who does all work and on time. I missed one speech and did very poorly on another because of her harsh guidelines and gradings. She will not budge even if you plead with her.

Absolute worst professor I have ever had. I have never left a review up until now and could write an essay about her. She gives you ZERO leeway. VERY unclear with instructions and is NO help whatsoever. Toughest grader and most incompetent professor I have EVER came across. Does NOT care at all about her students. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS.

AWFUL DOESNT EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE. Ive never met a teacher that genuinely cares less about their students success. I have already gone to the dean about her actions and policies, and the dean is familiar with her because of my many problems shes had. AWFUL DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!

Avoid taking, has way too many directions its impossible to follow all of them. She also expects you be a pro at public speaking and is the hardest grader I've had in my life. Avoid

Save your GPA and take literally any other professor. Extremely tough grader, everyone I knew who had her also claims she gives very little information but expects perfection. Would not recommend taking her for COMM110.

There were two topics she said we couldn't do for the persuasive speech. Abortion and gun control. She said that I couldn't do Nuclear Energy, even though it was on the list of topic ideas she gave us. One of the guys in my group was still able to do his on gun control thought.

Avoid taking her if possible. I really wanted to like her but she was not accommodating at all to online courses. Her directions were very unclear throughout the course but always expected a perfect outcome. It seemed like didn't want her students to succeed, and gave minimal amounts of feedback.

For background, I came into this class with a 3.9 GPA and had been on the Dean's List every semester. I have never been so disregarded as a student in my life. Horrible personality, horribly intense grading for a gened credit, and less flexible than a literal rock. To summarize: if you have even an ounce of self respect DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES

For a gen ed credit that is required for all students, she is an incredibly hard grader, with a large courses load of content and difficulty actually providing you informative feedback which you can improve. The average class score for a speech is 60% with no curve, would not recommend taking this horrible teacher with incredibly difficult grades.

Instructions are all over the place. No clear formatting, but review all the material even if you spend some time trying to find out where things are. Very detailed when grading, wants perfection. No real feedback, instead leaves you confused on what you actually did wrong. Her feedback is very “around the bush.”

There was nothing positive about having Professor Spiegelhoff. She was so rude with comments she would make to students and then would claim one thing and then "mean it another way" while she was grading. She would take points off for the tiniest things and dropped someone a whole letter grade because they didn't staple their notecards together.

It was extremely frustrating reading how confused she was when reading my prompts or when submitting speech topics. She would literally say “I'm confused, I don't understand”. I then had to give her the run down of the entire speech for it to make sense. She's very condescending and as others have said conveys an “I am better than you” attitude.

Grades you more on english than public speaking criteria. Citing is a big thing! Also want you to cite in the speeches although I have never heard someone do that. Not clear instructions, all over the place. You have to dig for the instructions on one assignment. Also grade you on professional clothing even though I don't think I was in my pjs? No

She grades on every detail and every single punctuation mark. No one is perfect, but to Marieke, everyone has to be! Never EVER again. Please also do your research before submitting papers, almost all the time there were little details scattered on canvas about that one assignment. It's almost like hide and seek. Do NOT take her.

Spiegelhoff was the worst professor I've had, she is nitpicky about minor things, gives minimal feedback, and her instructions are unclear. She expects far too much from students for a level 100 course and doesn't give students the respect they deserve. if you can avoid her, please do so; if not, I wish you good luck.

Made this account just to rate this professor. I would call myself a good student been on honor roll a few times. This teacher made me question why I am even going to college. The worst experience with a teacher I've ever had. Will approve my topic then I write my outline that will take me my entire weekend to do then disapprove of my topic. Awful.

For example, she gave me a recommendation for a speech topic, I made my entire speech about that topic and then she graded me a 1/50 for not having an approved topic even though she gave me the topic.

Teacher tried to make this class important and had ridiculous standards for assignments. Take this class with literally anyone else!!

I joined the class a bit late, and the very same day I received an aggressive email stating that since the assignments were late, I could only receive late credit. I was confused—how could I complete the assignments if I wasn't even enrolled yet? I immediately dropped the class after that.

I made an account just to rate this professor. This is the only course I have ever dropped and it was specifically because of the instructor being outrageous. I lost 8 out of 25 points on my speech for going over time by 2 minutes, bringing my grade-- on my VERY FIRST speech, which was due on Day 2, mind you-- from a B to a D. No. Absolutely not.

Incredibly hard grader, taking points off for very minor things (not stapling a rubric onto your note cards), unclear with her expectations. Was not easily approachable and made you feel dumb asking questions. I would have dropped the class immediately if I didn't need it to graduate. Steer clear!

She takes forever to reply to emails, but then they are vague, RUDE, and avoidant. I would never take a course with this professor again. I have all A's except this class. Literally run.
