I really enjoyed her---that is....before the first test. Although she seems like a nice friendly person, her tests are a distaster. They don't follow along with the study guides..and merely every question is a trick question. She's not understanding with personal problems AT ALL. This is a very very difficult class.
she is a great teacher! Very animated and engaging. her tests are very hard and tricky but heck she drops one grade. Good teacher

tests are really hard, lots of material covered.Out of my class of around 150 only about 30 or 40 passed, I barely passed. Makes an introductory course alot harder than it should be. Take this with another teacher if possible
I found her to be likable, but her tests are very difficult. However, go to class, study, and ask her when you're not clear about something - she's very approachable. You'll learn a lot but you'll also work very hard. I too think it's a bit tougher than an intro class should be.
She's a really great teacher, but her tests are incredibly hard. I read and outlined every single chapter and took extensive notes during class and reviewed both before exams and still only got Bs. She's very helpful if you approach her, so take advantage.
She is an excellent professor! Very approachable, is willing to help, and makes herself accessible to students. The class is difficult though. Take the time to take notes, go to class, study, and ask questions!!! This course requires serious time and effort from the student!
Lectures were long and boring, often times i had to catch myself falling asleep. She tries to put too much information into your brain, and the tests come from some material that isn't even mentioned during class. I don't recommend this teacher at all. Freshman Biology should be enjoyable not miserable!
she is great at explaining the material to make sure the students understand it. her tests are quite hard. i had friends that took her class a semester and got C's and D's on her exams, yet they took another bio professor and they aced their tests. as for my self, i thought i would do better on her exams.
she seems like a nice person but she may be the worst teacher i have ever had in my life. Her tests are extremely difficult. No intro class should be that hard. If possible take it with someone else or at another University because unless you are willing to dedicate about 20 hours of studying per test you don't stand a chance at passing. Good Luck
Very hard class.Shaner is a great professor and I learned a ton. The tests are extremely hard! Be prepared to spend a lot of time on this class or you will not pass. Also do not buy book, you can buy it by the chapter online! The textbook does not directly contribute to the tests but is a good study tool and has a lot of interactive features.
Very hard, but incredibly interesting. Some of the actual material is horrible, but she makes it as pleasant as possible. If you are not interested in biology, take another professor. She is for serious biology or heath science studentss only. Be prepared to work for her exams because they are difficult, but never impossible.
Mrs. Shaner is an excellent professor. She truly has a passion for her subject and knows the material in-and-out!Her lectures are very interesting and she does an excellent job of projecting the information. However, her test are extremely difficult. An "A" is not easy to come by. She does offer extra credit, though! I enjoyed her class very much!
I learned a lot from this course
Mariken is knowledgeable about her subject, is approachable, and has flexible office hours (you will need them). That said, her tests, as noted by others, are difficult. The material requires extensive studying and taking notes is a must (draw the pictures she draws) For an intro class, it's difficult. Expect to work extremely hard for your grade
Her tests are hard, but I do think her expectations are fair. The tests are based more off of applied knowledge instead of memorized so just keep that in mine. Her lectures are good, take a lot of notes. I took the class at 8 in the morning which sucked. She responds to emails and homeworks are pretty helpful and easy. Go for it.
Marieken is a great teacher. Her tests really are not that bad, as long as you understand the material in lecture you'll do fine.
Mrs. Shaner is a really great teacher! you can really tell she loves biology! her lectures are very intersting cus she's really enthusiastic about it all. she gives examples of real life stories, mainly her own! her tests are hard! the questions are really tricky so you have to read them carefully. as long as you know the stuff you'll pass
This was probably the hardest class I have taken so far. Although attendance is not mandatory, if you do not go you will not pass(unless you learn well from reading, but still a lot is not covered in the books as in her lectures) The tests for me were VERY hard. Overall good teacher.
Excellent. Stay on top of notes and text ... will help with quizzes and exams. Kind, knowledgeable and approachable.
difficult subject, difficult quizzes and exams, will give you her time to help you succeed, sometimes shorttempered
She is a good teacher and all. She is will to help too, but her tests are ridiculously hard. The final is really really hard. You have to study A LOT for a good grade.
She is a great teacher! She makes her lectures easy.. but you do have to take lots of notes and study hard for the tests!! She drops the lowest score which is a plus :) If you miss class you will lose a lot that isn't covered in the book. She is always willing to help, don't be afraid to ask. STUDY!! Overall wonderful teacher!
Fantastic teacher! Makes the material very easy to understand. She gets a little short-tempered with people who come in late but if you show up on time you will have no problems. I highly recommend her!
This class was very difficult, but the material was interesting. Make sure you do not miss a class!!!
Although the material is difficult, Marieken is willing to engage in a guided discussion about any question you may have. She is very easy to talk to and easy to approach.
Hardest class this semester! She does not take attendance but if you plan on doing well in this class I would highly recommend attending all of the lectures. There are a total of 3 tests, 10 homeworks and a cumulative final.I found the tests to be quite hard, they are comprised of T/F, multiple choice and matching questions.
Professor Shaner is a great teacher! The way she explains things is both interesting and easy to understand. She includes examples about brownies, running, and turkey. lol. The tests are all business but doable if you attend class and study. She is very thorough and overall a great professor!
This teacher is hard but you do learn a lot and the exams are the hardest and they are the main grades of your final grade.
She's a great teacher! She's so helpful and really strives to make things easier to understand. She uses real life examples and is always willing to help. She's one of the best teachers I've had.
This is quite possible the hardest class that I have taken. I would guess that over 50 % of students fail this class. The tests are VERY difficult and tricky. You ABSOLUTELY must read the text, review notes, and understand concepts, not just regurgitate facts. Great professor, very helpful. HIGHEST standards as this is a weed out class. Reccomended
This course is by far the HARDEST class I have yet to take. She lectures great, but sometimes on the exam's I felt like she was pulling questions from thin air. Great class if that is the only class you are taking. Very time consuming as far as studying goes. If you have somewhat of a life, pick another course instructor!!
Very hard class, but she is the best professor I've had yet. She knows biology like the back of her hand and uses great concepts to explain the material. It is a difficult class as it should be since it is a bio for health majors. I highly reccomend her and make sure not to miss a lecture!
Very hard course. Very good lectures. Be ready to study a lot. Be ready for tons of information every lecture. Great teacher, hard course.
Very in depth material
Shaner is an awesome lecturer, but her exams are beyond hard. They confuse you and it's hard to comprehend what the answer should be because the answers all pretty much sound the same. Very confusing on exams but overall great instructor
Shaner's lectures are interesting and she is very good at breaking down difficult concepts and making them relative to something in everyday life. It is not completely imperative that you attend lectures her tests are 100% lecture based and the book is almost entirely useless. There are 3 exams (one dropped), weekly quizzes, and a cumulative exam.
Go to office hours
Shaner is a Great teacher! she breaks down difficult material into manageable chunks. going to lectures and studying her chapter reviews are a must for good exams scores. She also has an SI that can help you better understand the concepts in biology.
great teacher- I wish she taught other biology classes. Her tests are very hard, but if you put in the effort you will do fine.
THE BEST teacher I have ever had. You can tell that she is very passionate about biology. Thought I might fail at first but attended every class and came out with an A and a love for biology. I really recommend if you want to push yourself, take bio 123 with Marieken!
Class is pretty tough, just make sure you get 100 on all of the quizzes. Your grade truly reflects how much you put into the class. I thought I studied alot and still got a B.
Great lectures. Challenging tests. She like to make tricky questions. She messed up grading my final somehow on 14 pts worth of questions! Glad I went to go see how I had done bc that def would've hurt my grade. Make sure you check that she grades your tests right bc I never did. Probably deserved a better grade.
Class is intense, the tests are confusing but they're prepared that way for upper division level biology classes (e.g. Microbiology). Her lectures are very interesting i had a very high interest in the class, breaks down the difficult concepts & a sense of humor. I highly recommend Shaner for students who want a challenge & to understand biology!
One of the best professors I've ever had! She is tough, but fair. She's a good lecturer who cares about her students. Her class has made me excited about biology! I took it over the summer, but I wish I would have taken it during a regular length semester. I'd have liked to absorb more of the info. Shaner is a superb teacher.
This class was my most interesting class however the tests are very difficult. Attendance is VERY important if you want to do well on the test. She is very good at clarifying anything and helpful with any questions you have. Just study for the tests!
One of the HARDEST classes I have ever taken. She explains everything very clearly, make sure you study A LOT and go to class!
This is by far one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Do not take this class if you are lazy. It requires A TON of studying and good note taking. If you get a good grade, it's extremely rewarding because of how challenging it is. Shaner is a good teacher but the effort of the student has to be there in order to succeed.
Prepare to study hard! There are four exams and the top three are counted. Good class overall.
Loved her! Her powerpoints are posted online but they are an outline, so you have to go to class to fill in missing information. As long as you do the study guides and know them pretty well, there is no way you won't pass her test! Watch out for her matching, and know that she often asks multiple parts of one question.
AWFUL!!!!! One of the worst professors EVER!!!!! Not helpful at all and one of the world's unhappiest people. DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO AVOID TAKING HER CLASS!!!!!!
Outstanding! The class is hard, but she warns you about it the first day. Her TA is wonderful and extra study sessions are offered. Her tests really test your comprehension of the material, not just memorization. Tests go off of material in lecture, the text book is not really needed. Don't miss a class.
better to take online i think
She is such a nice lady, but the other biology teacher is easier. The two classes are not even comparable. I enjoyed the class but it was a struggle. Half the class drops by the end of the semester and fails the first test. If you aren't a good test taker do not take this class.
Her tests are completely from what she believes you need to know. I like to read the textbook before class and take notes, but none of this helped because she chose exactly what she wanted to lecture on. I am not a good test taker and her questions have multiple answers as well as answers that may be used more than once or not at all. CONFUSING!
Very nice lady, class is difficult but she test you on her lectures. Can be tricky because of the wording and extra words but if you attend class you should be fine! Use your way of studying don't let her scare you out of your normal ways. (Learned that on the last test)
She is a tough instructor, but she knows her stuff! I was an Economics major with no background in biology, and I loved this class. Take good notes and study, and you'll be fine. She's not mean; she just has a unique sense of humor. I actually found her to be hilarious. I would highly recommend her.
Very nice professor. She is tough but she knows what you need for the Health-related Sciences. She's helpful but you have to ask. She won't come to you and just give you help. You have to dedicate time to her class. If you are lazy and do not have interest in Biology, then do not take her class because you will end up failing. Great class though!
Great teacher; her lectures were very helpful and I feel as if I really learned a lot; i took her in 204 for the plant section of the class; tests are in fact challenging (fully essay/short answer) and require that you go to class; she was helpful in her office hours though to clear things up; great teacher; one of my favorite at UNM
Shaner has good lectures HOWEVER, her tests are ridiculously hard. Studying hard did not prepare me for them and she is not very helpful. Avoid this class if possible. The withdraw and fail rate is super high.
Shaner makes the course material very interesting, and applicable to the material you will need to know for health-related courses. She is very helpful if you ask. Her tests match up with the notes you take in class- attend the lectures and memorize terms to do well. I was massively struggling from the tests, and had to drop. Hard course.
Shaner takes tea with dementors. Besides the fact that she's rude, she expresses her political views and has ZERO PATIENCE. If you need help with the course go to a T.A., don't ask her; she will accuse you of being truant (I'm an A student). She also treats everyone in the class like children. If you take Shaner, you've entered Azkaban.
This class was difficult, but she does warn you about this the first day, as it is a class for health majors. Pay attention, study hard, and DO NOT MISS CLASS. I'm serious about this one. Her TA David is outstanding, and she is tough, but fair. It felt impossible while going through it, but I scraped by with a B. If I can do it, so can you.
Hardest class I've ever taken and I'm a 4th year student. She is very knowledgeable and you will have to apply yourself. The tests are on the application of the material, so just knowing what something is will not help you. She has to deal with a lot of young students, so I understand why she is impatient starting out, but she gets better later on.
I had a love/hate relationship with this class. I loved how much information I absorbed from Shaner's lectures. She truly is one of the most knowledgable professors I've ever had. On the other hand, her tests were EXTREMELY difficult. So much so that you'll find yourself questioning her intentions. With quite a bit of effort, I ended with a B.
Shaner was an amazing teacher! Extremeley knowledgable on the biology content. Be forewarned, this class is NOT easy. I put in a lot of studying and work and ended with a B. Withdrawal and fail rate is pretty high but you will definitley learn a lot and she is a very fun and interesting teacher during lectures!
Hardest class I've ever taken. I would study for a solid week before the test and still not due well. Whenever I would ask her for help she was very short and honestly quite rude with me. I dont recommend taking this class with her unless you are a genius. I have always been an A and B student and for me to fail this class says something
very rude, not very helpful feels like she hates teaching and her only pleasure is fooling students and making them fail DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!
Shaner is one of the best teachers I've ever had taking a science course. Sure, the class is challenging, but unlike so many other you walk out with an insane amount of knowledge well enough to teach it. I attribute my success in other science classes to her. She is a gifted teacher! My favorite (and not easiest) class!
Shaner is very rude, I went in for her office hours and she was not helpful. Her tests are ridiculously hard, some of the questions do not make sense. I STUDIED! I READ the text book, and still did not do well in the exams. avoid taking her class!!
Shaner is very helpful and makes it easy to understand the information. Attendance is crucial if you want to pass. I ended up with a B after studying endlessly before tests. Tests are tricky, but not so bad if you really study. I learned so much in this class.
Her lectures' were very informative and she was very good about answering questions in class. However, her tests' were REALLY REALLY hard. If you are a working student or have other very challenging classes I wouldn't recommend her. You will have to spend several weeks preparing for tests.
Her lectures' are very informative and she was good about answering questions in class. However, the tests were REALLY REALLY hard! If you are a working student or you have other hard classes I would not recommend taking it with her. You have to spend weeks preparing for tests if you want to pass them.
Shaner is a brilliant teacher! Her lectures are informative and she really knows what she is talking about. If you study and actually learn the concepts and why they work, the tests will be easy. Great Professor!
Marieken Shaner is the best professor I've had at UNM, especially in the Biology department. Her tests are not difficult if you answer all the review questions. It's a lot of work, but the questions for the test come straight from the review. ABSOLUTELY take her if you get the chance! Loved her!!
This class is very very challenging, but if you put in the work you will come out on top. Marieken literally makes her tests with trick questions on purpose, so you really have to know your stuff. You will want to kill yourself, but you will learn A LOT. I loved this class and hated it at the same time. Study for at least two weeks prior to exams.
I don't know where I would be if I did not take this class from Marieken! She is a life saver! Yes, it was one of the hardest classes I have taken, but everything I learned in that class has stuck with me and has been extremely helpful in the more difficult classes I am now taking.
One of the BEST professors! So glad they offered anatomy 2 with this teacher, rather than just Swan. Go to class, take good notes. Tests (4, none cumulative) are tough, they are all short answer so you HAVE to study hard. The best part about her teaching style though is you actually learnretain the material. Wish I would've took her for BIO 123!
Shaner executes her lectures great. She explains all the material well. She doesn't write much on the board, which means all her information comes from her talking. If you take notes, study hard, and come to class all the time, you can pass. Probably the hardest class I have taken.
Definitely one of the MOST DIFFICULT classes I have ever taken but I am so glad I took it! Her lectures are super interesting and easy to understand- make sure to take good notes! Take advantage of SI sessions at CAPS (key to passing the class) and allow yourself PLENTY of time to study for each exam, they are KILLER. Overall, incredible professor!
I loved all the topics each week and found many of the lectures to be quite interesting and informative. Even though the tests are brutal, Shaner explains everything in lecture pretty well. However, she is not the kindest person and is very stringent about grading and assignments. If I could go back, I would've chosen a different professor.
Great teacher, best during summer semesters. If you want to have more fun, talk about futbol. (Soccer, for all you Americans.)
She is one of my favorite professors! If I could take every class from her I would. I have taken two classes from her and got an A in both. You have to do your share and the class does require a lot of commitment and studying, but the tests are well designed and I learned a lot.
Marieken is amazing. If you actually want to learn, take her classes. She is extremely clear on how the systems work, and when it comes to exams all the material is covered in lecture. Go to class and it's an easy A.
Marieken Shaner is a lovely prof to have at UNM. The way she lectures draws you in and makes you want to really understand what she is talking about. Yes, the tests are challenging but if you do the review questions supplemented by the book and go to her office hours you will do fine. I am a great example, first test 78%, last test 95%! take her!
Good lecturer because she gives goodclear examples and emphasizes what is important. Very helpful during office hours! Her test are challenging and require you to write in pen but if you do the study guides they are helpful. Study guides can be long depending on lecture. I really enjoyed evolution and ecology because of her.
Shaner is easily the best professor I have ever had. Don't buy a textbook, you won't use it. Everything on her tests come directly from lectures, and the exam questions are written to test understanding. If you don't show up, you'll fail. It's worth it, though.. her lectures are incredible and she makes them super applicable to health sciences.
Marieken is the best. This is my second course with her and I wish I could take more. Very clear on what you're expected to know for exams, and lectures are VERY interestingentertaining. Always gives examples of a principle, which makes everything easy to remember. Attendance not mandatory, but don't miss--it's not worth it and your grade suffers.
She is my favorite professor and I would recommend her to any student willing to work hard and learn a lot! Once you attend class and take good notes you will do well. She even allows you to record the lecture so you don't miss anything Excellent teacher!
Tests are AWFUL!
This is the toughest class I have ever taken at UNM. Some people are saying that the exams are clear, no, they are not. Exams are extremely though and just doing the study outline she provides will not be enough. If you're going to take this class be prepared to study your behind off; miss class and you're SOL unless you get the notes from someone.
Shaner's lectures were pretty interesting. If you want an A, DO NOT skip class. Her tests are based on her lectures. Textbook was needed. She posts her slide shows, but there's barely any text. Expect to work very hard and write fast (or type your notes). I feel like I've learned a lot about anatomy. Her lectures are pretty detailed.
Marieken is a very supportive and helpful professor. She will happily answer any question you may have about anything! Her A&P course has few grades, and all exam questions are taken directly from the lectures. If you don't go to class, it will be very tough to get an A!
Shaner is a great professor and explains everything you need to know in exactly the detail she expects you to understand it. The toughest part of this class isn't the subject matter its the volume of material we are held accountable for on each exam. Tip: don't just memorize phrases, understand the biological processes. That's what she test you on
Marieken is a good lecturer but her slides are pointless to look at. They give no information at all and she seems like she is against the use of the textbook (even though it is required for 203). The exams are all short answer and she really sticks to her exam key. VERY HARD GRADER. Overall knowledgable professor but slides need more content.
I wish Shaner taught more courses because I would def take it with her. Her lecture slides are incredibly organized and helpful if you show up to class. If you don't you won't really gain much from them. She really cares about her students and remembers you even after the course is over. Her exams are all encompassing, so pay attention and engage!
A generally uninterested lecturer, I was generally unimpressed with Ms. Shaner. She wanders a fair amount and her slides are next to useless. She only talks about information that she finds interesting and skims over the super important stuff. As a graduating senior taking this class for grad school applications, I was incredibly unimpressed.
She doesn't really teach, she just lectures material from the book. Her test are based on everything within the chapters covered. Literally everything. She does not give any reviews and expects you to know the material by heart. Her lectures are long and tedious as well.
She is the hardest Professor I've ever taken. She's unapproachable and condescending
This class covers a lot of information, but Shaner does a great job explaining difficult concepts and making things relevant with personal stories. Though her tests are pretty extensive, she posts a ton of review questions for each chapter to help you study.
Marieken Shaner is a awesome professor. I have learned more in her class than almost any other course in College. She gives amazing lectures and tries to tie it in with health care (For A&P health care). Her test are hard, they are all short answer. If you take notes in lecture and do the review questions you should get an A in class though.
She's a great lecturer, but her exams are very very tough. Makes sure to attend every lecture because everything she talks about in class will show up on the exam one way or another. Ask questions if you don't understand the matter, take advantage of the lab time. Your TA really helps out.
From a current nursing student- If you're taking an anatomy class, chances are you'll be entering the healthcare realm. The rigor of the class in necessary for you to understand human systems at the caliber your program will expect of you. Work hard, be an active learner, and you'll succeed. Don't shy from asking her for help! Wonderful teacher.
Shaner teaches at a graduate level for an undergrad class. She doesn't get through all material because she goes way too far into ridiculous things. Her tests are absolutely ridiculous and she could care less if every single person fails. if you can avoid taking a class with her, DO. Interesting lecturer but way too hard for a 200 level course.
Worst ever! DO NOT take her! Her priority is not teaching, it's on herself! She's extremely mean when you go to her office hours. Seems that she hates everyone and thinks you don't care about your career. Exams are graduate level, if you get a C consider it an A with her. More than half the class is failing, ridiculously hard not even an easy C.
This class is a MAJOR time commitment if you want to score well on her exams. You are held responsible for a ridiculous amount of information for each exam and she makes her own tests which leads to convoluted questions. I feel the need to re-listen to lectures to retake notes because she lectures so quickly. Overall, avoid if possible!!!!
Dr. Shaner is a great lecture, although she is very test heavy and her exams are almost impossible to pass. I studied a week straight for one of her exams and still failed it. If you take her class, be prepared to work a lot and make sure you really understand the concepts.
The room tends be very tense as she is aggressive with quite the attitude. She covers a massive amount of information, so just being in the lecture won't help you. It takes a lot of study time. She is very strict, and does not work well with students. I wouldn't advise taking her class only because her attitude towards students is horrible.
She tries to elevate this class from an intro course to a higher level physiology course. She repeatedly said "you should have learned this in your intro course" yet the only intro course required for this class is A&P 1, where different material is covered. The material you cover in class greatly differs to the level of detail you are tested on
Her lectures are geared toward the healthcare field. The lectures are interesting and very dense. This class requires a lot of time commitment, so you have to change your studying habits and know the material wel. I learned so much, but her exams are very difficult.
Dr Shaner knows her stuff, and her lectures are interesting. However, she covers a massive amount of material at an impossible rate. Record her lectures and listen to them! Find a study buddy for times when you're confused because she is unapproachable and moody. You will learn a lot in her class, but brace yourself for what's ahead. Work hard!
Professor Shaner is wonderful. She cares about students. She will not tolerate cheaters or people walking in late. You get some case study work and you can work with partners. DO NOT CHEAT & use your own wording or you will get caught. She is approachable and is happy to meet at office hours. She is knowledgable and tries to assist. Use ppt & book!
This professor is a very hard grader and isn't willing to offer much help to her students. She takes a long time to give graded tests and papers back and won't post them to learn. Also a bit disorganized as she makes many mistakes in test questions, assignments, due dates etc. She believes that her class is more important than all others.
Shaner is a nice person deep, deep down but when she's in a bad mood, get ready to feel reeaal awkward. She is very aggressive and will call you out in class for just about anything. She lectures straight from the book so just read the book, but she will throw in some random stuff from lecture. Tough grader, makes 200 level material seem like 400.
Not only are her tests extremely hard, but she's a ridiculously tough grader. Not the nicest person during office hours either. Avoid if you can.
She honestly is the hardest teacher I have ever taken, maybe the subject but I thought she was harder then organic chemistry. This class is not just memorizing like anatomy 1, she MAKES YOU UNDERSTAND IT. Just like a doctor would. She will change the way you think, the exams force you to bring the systems together and diagnose what is going on.
She will call you out during lecture if she doesn't like what you're doing. Her lectures are not helpful. She keeps mentioning stuff you will learn in future biology classes. She talks about other classes she teaches and wastes so much time on that. Reading out of the book is a better use of time. Don't take her!!!!
Her way of lecturing is so unhelpful. Her test are insanely hard and she makes everything way more complicated than it needs to be. Don't take her class!
Take anyone else for 201. Shaner made an intro bio class like an advanced biochem class, and I wish I was exaggerating when I say that almost 2/3 of my class didn't pass. However, I retook the class the next semester with different profs and did just fine in it. Her exams were impossible to pass. Idk why she makes this class so unreasonable.
This is early but after the first exam and case studies, I have no idea what she wants. She wants specific things out of many possible answers and will mark you wrong even if it is correct because it's not what she wants. I am in an immunology class which should be hard and is harder but due to her way of grading and asking questions, it is easier.
Shaner knows the information well and explains it in class in a very structured manner, pay attention in class and engage with the material/study the review questions she posts. Exams are mostly multiple choice with 1 or 2 short answer question. She is also willing to clarify during exams. Very good teacher and cares about her students success.
Dr. Shaner is a tough professor. Be prepared to work hard. I would study for 10-15 hours per test (if not more). That being said, I learned SO MUCH in her anatomy class. And her lectures kept me engaged for the entire 2 hours and 30 minutes. If you are serious about the health sciences you should take Dr. Shaner to really learn the material.
Attend her lectures, office hours and use the study material she provides. Her exams will kick you in the rear but is her way of making sure you are learning what you need to. Especially if going into a health career. She is very passionate about her teachings and it shows.
Dr. Shaner is one of the best professors I've ever taken, she is also the hardest. Her lectures are amazing and she really relates the information to people going into health sciences (like EMS). I leave the class thinking I understand and then the tests come and I get my ass kicked. If you're going to study you will do well, if not you will fail.
Great lectures, hard exams. She does 201 with Hofkin, and they're exams are pretty different so you need to be able to adjust. Very organized w her lectures. Attenance NOT mandatory but you should go if you want to pass. 1st test is the easiest, but still unexpectedly difficult, tests worth most of the grade. Mom vibes.
This professor expects you to remember and learn a ridiculous amount of information. She isnt very approachable and not very helpful during her office hours. Spent more time studying for this class then I did for organic chemistry. I wouldnt have taken if I had known all this before. Do not take her!
It's one of the toughest classes I've taken but if you put in the time and STUDY A LOT, read the text, print the slides & attend help sessions you can pass this class. The tests are hard because they're more application based than just memorizing terms Don't skip class because she'll bring things up that are not in the text. Overall good professor
Seems to be a prof that some take to very well. Tests are insane. Very conceptually based on a very detailed scale, which is good, but hard to put as much time towards the course as necessary. She goes very fast in lecture and the "study guides" will *NOT* accurately prepare you for an exam. You need SI Leader sessions to fully prepare for exams.
Shane's lecture are the most stressful thing to be in. Her test are based off the lectures and book so you have to attend class. She packs so much info into one class time that you'll have at least 5-8 pages of notes per lecture. She goes through quickly and doesn't like to repeat herself. She's intimidating to approach.
Incredibly hard class. Shaner is way smart and it amazes me how much she knows BUT she's very unapproachable and this class will be the hardest class you'll take. Tests were incredibly hard and went into depth on why systems work the way they do rather than just memorizing the basics. She did offer an extra credit case study at end of semester!!
Dr. Shaner is one of the best professors I have ever had. That doesn't mean you don't have to work for your grade. It's A&P II you have to put effort into understanding the concepts, but Shaner is a great lecturer and I learned so much information.
Shaner is a great lecturer and has a vast knowledge of A&P. That being said, she has become jaded over time by "cheating students" and has made all of her exams extremely convoluted and high stakes in order to combat this. This is an entry level bio class but expect harder tests than upper division physics or molecular bio classes.
The lectures were easy to follow, and she made learning the content enjoyable. She is extremely tough and doesn't put up with any disruptions in her class. My problem with her this that her exams are extremely conceptualized and the content she teaches in class doesn't prepare you for the exam. A lot of outside studying is recommended. Tough. Tough
This is a 200 level class, and it should not be this difficult. I shadowed a few doctors this semester, and they told me that the material we are tested on is too in depth for this level. Her lectures are engaging, but she makes the exams extremely difficult and hard to understand. If you get a bad grade, i don't recommend arguing with her. lol.
Her exams are ridiculous by all means. She is not friendly in her office hours too. The study case questions are so vague and she never tells you what she wants and you're certain to lose points on them. Her exams are BAD, MC but vague and typically have two correct answers. She tests based on the lectures and the textbook (even if not covered)
She taught an undergrad class like we were all about to be doctors. She had very unreasonable expectations for us. Her test questions were very specific things she mentioned once in class. Her lecture notes were vague and unhelpful when trying to study. She graded very harshly and was not willing to help outside of class.
Definitely don't take this as a three hour long lecture. It was a struggle to care, and she crams way too much material into each lecture. She's pretty unapproachable if you are struggling, and all the questions are worded strangely. The study guides are wildly lacking, and the only way to pass is to go to SI. Just take a different section.
She was always down to talk a 1 in 1 and she cared for everyone
