I took her class in the summer and we work a lot with the speeches. The intructor is a professional public speaker, educated in Europe with a perfect English, she knows very good the subject. Also she is very helpful and give you individual feedback to improve yourself and get the concepts. I totally recommend the class.
This instructor has a good knowledge of the course she teaches. The problem with her is that she doesn't make herself clear on instruction and she has an extremely, extremely smart mouth! Not, to mention very unorganized. It she could get these areas together she would be great.
She is a very smart woman. I am impressed by the quality of her lectures and her class really made me think about alot of aspects in my own life that I had not thought about before. Sometimes we all live in our little bubble and don't analize the bigger picture, this class helped me alot with REAL critical thinking. I HIGHLY recommend the class.
Professor Thaning is very inspirational. She is a powerful public speaker who can really help your self esteem. At the end of the semester I felt very empowered and confident to make positive changes in my life. It's important to pay attention in the class because its fun and you learn so much. great class!
Ms. Thanning - is very disorganized, never returns quizzes, papers, or tests. She comes to class late, and gives the impression that she just thought up the lesson plan before she rolled out of bed that morning!!! She is very confusing and will tell you to study just to change her mind about the day's work!! Her lectures are confusing!!!
She's fine
Do not take her unless you *have* to, and be warned, she is awful; never returns papers; extremely unclear instruction; lectures are useless; unfair grading; picks favorites; rude; her lecture notes don't match book, making tests impossible; 0 tolerance for attendance issues; an "A" is nearly impossible because of her inconsistent instruction.
My peresonal opinion i thought this teacher was wonderful. She inspirred me to keep learning communication her classes are interesting. I took her for summer which the course went by quik and i still earned an A. she is hot and dedicated to her teaching! So highly recomend her
I love HER! Because of her i have decided on my major. Her class is awesome. I took her for summer and i loved it. Fun class! and she helps a lot! i got an A and most of my classmates did too. I highly recommend her. Ignore the negative comments. TAKE HER
Yes, Ms Thaning (one N) can be pretty disorganized, and she doesn't have good time management, but she was always very helpful and I learned a lot about how to give a successful speech
Do not take class with her. She is very unorganized and she use lot of favoritism in the class. She have no login of diving the score and give food graded to her favorite students only even when they perform bad in class.BBC should have done a better job my hiring good teachers.
Really bad teacher. Use lot of favoritism. Very unorganized.
If you want to transfter to the UC system, this class is mandatory. She lacks organization, and is unclear. Very nice, but does show favoritism. If you can, try to find another class.
Loved this class Ms Thanning is very passionate about her work and kept me interested throughout.
loved this class. i learned a lot about intercultural communication.
She is damn good hot best teacher! She helps a lot! If you're international student she is very tolerant too.
Ms. Thanning was my favorite comm instructor. She speaks with a compelling tone, and motivates her students to participate and break down mental walls. I increased my communication skills. Thanning savored every question from every student and treated all her students equally. Im happy to have had her and hope to always know her.
I loved this class and loved having Ms. Thaning as a teacher. Mariella Thaning is so positive and brings so much energy into the classroom, you can't help but get excited about learning. Because of Ms. Thaning I gained much needed self confidence that has helped me in my professional as well as my scholastic life. Wonderful teacher!!!
Very imformative, she effectively teaches the art of communication. Taught me the importance of questioning what I read, see and hear and how to exude confidence in public speaking.Always reminds us that we are stronger than our obstacles. I truly appreciate her caring and effective style of teaching
Professor Thanning is amazing! This is the only community college class I have ever taken that I looked forward to every week. She challenged everyone in the class to explore deep within themselves, sparked enlightening class discussions and created an exceptional class community, all in the period of a semester. I can't recommend her enough!
I went to 3 different community college and took interpersonal class because of my job I moved a lot . Miss thanning by far was the best teacher, she really delivers power and reveals a lot of information about interpersonal relationships and yourself. She was very understanding and I loved her stories. She was the realeat teacher I know!
One of the great professors that u'd love to attend her class. It's not only the education that you will receive but I promise u that ur personality will totally change. I saw many students including myself being transformed to wonderful public speakers. She is always willing to help students and make time to aid'em to succeed and excel.
She is a really sweet person who is an amazing speaker. Unfortunately, this does not always equate to an amazing professor. There are three presentations in total and you get zero feedback for each. The book she assigned was rarely used (waste of 80$). And then, the final was based on 5 chapters she had the audacity to assign a week before.
Ms.Thanning is a very interesting intelligent teacher. Lacks organization and she rarely used the textbook. Other then that the speeches she assigned were fairly easy and actually really fun.
It was a fun class but I didn't learn very much. She has you memorize these facts about styles of speech but doesn't really show you why it's important for your speech. She's always bad with timing. 15 minute breaks easily turn into 1 hour and we take up 2 classes just to get through everyone's speech which is a problem when there are only 12 days.
she knows her stuff, Not much hw BUT its so unpredictable and so unorganized. She asks you to stay after class to give you your assignmt grade. The class always goes overtime and a lot of times it feels like she's just winging it. The final was horrible. The whole class she never tells you read the book but its part of the final. part time teacher.
She's a good speaker, but as an expert in communications and a communications instructor, she falls terribly short. She's extremely disorganized, isn't clear on her instruction, seldom truly listens and answers the questions actually being asked, hardly gives feedback and when she does, she makes an example out of you in front of the entire class.
Ms. Thaning is by far, one of the most helpful teacher I have had at BCC. I highly recommend you taking her classes, even if youre not majoring in communication, she promotes personal growth, and self-exploration. She will make sure you are prepared for real life situations when it comes to express yourself through speech.
Such a great instructor. Easy A . I f you have the chance to take her class , I highly recommend it . One of my best college discussions thus far . She has a clear passion for the art of communication and public speaking. In addition makes ever presentation fun , which makes public speaking that less intimidating ! :)
she's cool! not a bad class just a long one but its worth it
Ms Thaning is a very nice person who is willing to take her time and gives your personnal advices if needed. But she's really desorganized which makes the class hard to follow sometimes. Get a step back, don't be a control freak and you'll be fine
More a therapy than a class. You will learn about yourself and how people act. This is really a hard class so if you are an international student, take it ! Be aware that you will have a lot of assignments (not hard). She is confusing for directions but very nice. Easy A for sure !
Deadlines are confusing. This class doesn't help you to present better. Not really interesting but if you need an easy A, go go go !
She is such an inspiration to me as a teacher and as a person. She is currently working on her PHD, as well as is teaching two classes, and she has to teach one 5 hour class after another with a fifteen minute break in the middle. And yet, she dedicates all her energy and passion into teaching, and is one of the best teachers I've ever had.
During the begin of the semester I had a rough time trying to get out of my comfort zone to give speeches. I was nervous and would fret a lot. Taking Miss Thaning as an instructor changed the way I gave my speeches. She gave me great advice and inspired me a lot! Also, her stories are great!
take her for sure
Lecture are long. She pretty strict about using electronic in class. If you do, she will get upset. Need to show highly respect in class.
Thaning is a charismatic person, a well speaker and has wonderful knowledge of the material she teaches, however-- she's disorganized, unclear on her expectations/assignments and tends to make her students uncomfortable by calling attention to their weaknesses in front of the class. Simply because of the disorganization, I wouldn't take her again
Miss Thaning is a very well experienced professor, she makes studying communications very interesting. She creates an environment where students can share intimate experiences and progress their communication skills. She is organized and will help you improve your grade if needed, highly recommended.
COMM45 need you to do some speeches in front of people, and I used to afraid of doing it. I did not do well in the first speech, but Miss Thaning gave me lots of help after that, finally I get an A. This class helps me a lot, it makes me not afraid of doing speech. Good teacher, interesting lecture and transfer credits. Take it right now.
Ms. Thaning is very well informed, resourceful and caring towards her students.
Never had a more disorganized teacher. Poor time mgmt. Expectations&assignments were unclear&class material was always full of typos. Ironic since she's a comm prof. She never even gave feedback/grades for most of our speeches. She was obviously not focused on teachingalways late &unprepared, even for the final. Very frustrating. Save yourself.
She's terrific! Intelligent, Articulate, Incredibly knowledgeable about the world because of her travels. I would take her again in a heart beat if she teaches more classes. She wants you to learn and succeed.
Professor Thaning was sincerely one of the best teachers I have ever had. She was organized, caring and inspirational. This public speaking course changed my life and I would recommend it to anyone looking to improve their interpersonal and communication skills.
Took her public speaking class over the summer. She's an amazing proffesor who does more than just teach you about public speaking. She creates what feels like a community in the classroom, by having everyone really open up in front of each other. She gives great feedback and really works with you. Just expect lots of group work. Also take notes!
As long as you do the work you'll be fine
Took her in Spring 16 Pretty good teacher but like the other reviews she was a little dis organizationed which at times made it hard to comprehend the assignments we were mentioned to do but overall, she's funny and dwn to earth and understanding
Ms. Thaning is a great professor. I took her class spring 16 and as a lot other students mentioned Ms. Thaning was very disorganized at times but she will do everything in her power to help you, all you have to do is ask. I had other students who have taken her class in previous semesters and they said she is usually on top of things. Id recommend.
English is my 3rd language, and I used to be shy to speak in public. This class will teach you the basic skills, and the sweet prof will encourage and challenge you. The Prof is very respectful, at the time, expert in this field. Public speaking is a journey I want to travel, and Ms. Thaning has given me positive and constructive feedback.
she's pretty cool. definitely requires students to engage and actually put an effort into what they are doing. if you aren't getting involved she'll call you out. she genuinely wants to help you tho and she's the type of prof who really works hard to make sure her students learn and succeed. not an easy A, but definitely achievable. i liked her.
Taking ms. Thaning's class was the best thing i've done at BCC. She's one of those teachers who is passionate about her work which makes u want to learn and she loves her students which means she actually cares about your success in the class and outside of it. IF your looking for a com45 public speaking teacher take HER
Very very good teacher!!! Not only does she teach good but from day one she tries to make us feel like a community and get comfortable with one another. I really advise all my young African Americans to take her class you all will love it and her!!! Do the work and show up and you will pass.
She is the best professor I have ever had. She is full of energy, she mastered her field. She was an inspiration for me as a woman and immigrant. She gave us the best of her. She taught that I can do better. She believed in each of us that could make a change in the world. She was a good speaker. She helped get trough my fears of public speaking
Very unclear directions and due dates
She is not the teacher for communication you would want. For A Communication teacher, she bad a communicating with her students. She talks about students behind their backs to other students and brings drama to work. Save yourself and take someone else who knows the meaning of Communication and Leadership.
I think it is ironic that a professor in communication cannot clearly communicate her point. She talks most of the class period, often shouting, I always have my notes out just in case, but hardly ever is anything said worth writing down. No clear due dates. Piling on unhelpful assignments and projects on finals week, and unrealistic time managing
Ms. Thaning's dedication to her students is unparalleled. She brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm to every class. She is willing to work one on one with her students. Her ability to relate the material to her class makes her one of the most effective teachers I have ever had. You will love her stories!
Not very clear on criteria for assignments jumps around from topic to topic instead of focusing on one thing at a time very inconsistent assigns papers and projects that aren't on the syllabus very unorganized
Awesome professor for interpersonal communication! She creates a safe and welcoming environment so no one feels shy and is always willing to help her students out. She uses real life examples and ties it in with the topic of discussion. Definitely will miss Ms. Thaning's hilarious stories. Highly recommend taking one of her classes!
She is a great professor, I want to keep taking classes with her, it was a great class! Thanks for being one of my best professors!
Love this teacher to death! She tells the best stories and really keeps all the students engaged. This professor really cares about her students and makes education fun for everyone. If you are majoring in communication then you better pick this Professor! I definitely am taking her again.
the class was very disorganized, assignments were piled on at the end of the semester, and she often came to class unprepared. she often gave lengthy assignments that were never graded, and her grading system was questionable at best. if you are interested in actually learning about communication, I'd advise finding a different teacher.
Professor Thaning gives great lectures with inspirational messages. Be ready to participate or she will call on you. She is very understanding as long as you communicate ;) There is not a lot of reading but there is quite some group work. I would definitely take her class again.
Ms. Thaning is a fun, nice, and very inspirational speaker. There are both group and individual speeches to give and she grades rather fair. The best part of her is her very inclusive and reassurance on your participation. She is sometimes spacey but we are all guilty of that at times. Great and I'll be taking more of her comm classes for sure.
As a communications teacher, you would think Mss. Thaning would be more mindful of her students communication styles and be willing to have effective communication. Mss. Thaning degrades and embarrasses her students during oral presentations. She doesn't take constructive criticism well and gets offended easily. I've taken her for 2 1/2 semesters.
From experience, her material is very unorganized. If you try your best in the class she will find a way to criticize you. I don't think her teaching style is effective. I've taken her class for over 2 semesters, she repeats her stories and writing assignments. Take her class if you want a teacher that makes you feel bad about yourself.
She is a procrastinator but easy A if you show up and do what she asks for. I would say attendance is mandatory because if you don't show up then you won't hear what she assigns for the next class. In addition, she barely posts to Canvas so it is important to attend lecture.
Very passionate about the subject and is overall a good teacher, I learned a lot in her class. BUT, her directions on some assignments aren't clear and it's hard to get a reply from email. she also never upgraded my grade on canvas and no grade or feedback for any of my essays which kinda sucked. I do recommend her though, good class and passable
Professor Thaning is a great professor especially for public speaking. She uses a lot of exercises to get you comfortable with both speaking as well as the class and gives you all the tools to ensure you are ready. By the end, I improved significantly and her feedback was always useful. Not hard to get an A if you put in the effort and show up.
Take a class with Prof Thaning, very good teacher. Excellent way to get comfortable with public speaking. She uses excellent and maybe unorthodox methods but you will definitely learn in her class. Don't be shy, get ready to work with groups, speak in front of the class, and be critiqued. Get involved in the class and you will have a good time.
In section 9 that was not enough to tell you how amazing Professor Thaning is. She is beyond words & her class was not mandatory for me, but being a black woman in America I wanted to know how to better communicate myself within my personal life as well as my work life. She made me realize what I needed to do even when it comes to happiness.
Supportive learning envirionment I am an older student who worked and attended school but assigments were clear and doable. Do the work, participate and show up. You will earn an A.
This professor is very unorganized. There will be assignments pop up and due in like two days. There are always essay quiz and you are expected to answer the question in a long length. The are no clear instruction for the presentation and due day are not clear either. After all, do not recommend. Soooo unorganized course.
Just don't take this course. Find another instructor for comm course.
This class is a nightmare and so does the professor. Please run away from this professor. She is very disorganized. The quizzes are ok, but the exams are insane. They are not very difficult but the questions are super weird. To be honest, she is the worst teacher I have ever met in community college.
I had professor Mariella Thaning's comm - 1A class for the 2022 spring semester. She is respectful, kind, professional, and so on in class meetings. The class material she gave us was easy to understand. She always helped students to solve the problems they had after class. I am very thankful to her.

She is amazing
Professor Thaning is really sweet and means well but she is really disorganized and always late. She makes up for it by having pretty clear grading criteria. You have three speeches during the semester, one is a group presentation. They're pretty straight forward. Her online quizzes are a little strange but just be sure to check all the modules.
She really builds a community in her class, which is super important for communications class. She's a wonderful person, and she's in my top 5 professors. She also just earned her doctorate!
Cares about all students & really passionate. Lectures were all over the place/the slides were messy, disorganized modules, guidelines for assignments were always super unclear. Feedback was meh. Bad communicator, hw= would say one thing in class, post a different thing on Canvas, 2 days later it all changes. Great person, not so great professor.
I took both Interpersonal Communication and Intro to Speech with Dr. Thaning. She truly cares about her students and creates a supportive, welcoming space. Her classes build confidence and community. She's not about perfection—she's about real growth. Highly recommend!
Tbh the professor is a great person but not great at teaching, repeated the same thing over and over and over, throughout multiple classes, although grading criteria is clear, assignments and tests aren't, will provide feedback last minute (day of) for presentations/speeches and expects you to fully incorporate it within 8h. Wouldn't take again.
