Prof. Beckstrand was the best math teacher I've ever had, ever. She was clear, had great teaching flow, listened and thought about student questions before responding, is passionate about math, personable, and her slight Italian accent is kind of cute. She was great at backing up to explain basic concepts, and was very respectful with students.
I was nervous coming into stats. Prof. Beckstrand made it simple though. Tests resemble notes, homework, and quizzes, so you shouldn't be surprised about what is on the tests if you are doing the work. I highly recommend taking her. She gives a quiz once a week (unless there was a test the last class of the last week), & there is usually homework.
Great instructor. Math had not always been a strong subject, mostly because of avoidance. This class was exceptionally well taught. Professor Beckstrand is great, although you will have to do work in this class and there is copious amounts of homework. Expectations are clear.
By far the best Math Professor I've ever had...I have taken Math at my younger days and absolutely hated it, until I took her math class. I love the fact that she shows you an example on the board step by step. She cares that you learn it, she will help you and even stay after class to show you or teach you how to do a problem, because she cares.
I took this class last summer, and I thought I was crazy because it's a short session! But I love they way she taught and so it made it better for me. I learned a lot in this class, I still need a little work, but overall made me like math again. I love the way Prof. Beckstrand teaching style, it worked for me. I would definitely recommend her!
I didn't think I was going to like Statistic, but I love the way Prof Beckstrand taught this class. There's a lot of homework, but that's the only way you'll learn, because the quizzes and exams are straight from the homework. So you might as well do the homework. She also tutors, so that's helpful. No surprises in the exam everything is from HW
Ms. Beckstrand is by FAR the best! She assigns a lot of work, but by the end you KNOW the material. Her lectures are very straight forward and easy to follow, if you take good notes you WILL do well on the homework, if you do well on homework you WILL do well in the class. Lots of extra credit , gives exam study guides, available to her students!
She is a great math teacher. She explains everything very well and will always try to answer your questions. However, she does give you a lot of hw which is submitted through WA. But if you do the hw you will A's all of the tests. Her lectures will explain everything so u will be able to do the hw without a problem. Easy A if u do the hw. Take her!
Wow she is one of the best math teachers I've ever taken! She truly cares about her students. I'm not good at math but I passed her class. Even though I took her summer class it wasn't difficult at all. She's very clear and explains everything very well. If you took Nasr for 96, take her for 105! Very similar. Would take her again in a heartbeat.

I have never enjoyed math but Beckstrand was amazing. Easy A if you do the homework and pay attention class you will ace the exams. She uses homework problems for the exam and gives opportunity for extra credit. HIGHLY RECCOMEND
Horrible math professor. Worst I have ever had. Blows through material at mach 5 speeds. Tough grader to the point where it becomes an absolute joke. You don't do it her way, you lose points, despite getting the correct answer whilst showing work. You will be up to your neck in homework and then some. Her teaching method is absolutely criminal.
This class is fairly fast paced so be prepared to write. This class wasn't exactly hard, but it definitely was a lot of work. Do your homework everyday or you will fall behind! Follow the notes EXACTLY on tests and homework to get full credit. She's very caring and wants her students to pass. Put in the work and you'll pass no problem
She is a great math teacher. Show up to class and take notes and you will have no issue passing the tests nor completing the HW. However, she does want you to show all the work but it should not be an issue if you take notes and due the HW. She also gives extra credit which makes it easy to get an A in the class
Professor Beckstrand is GREAT! Her lectures help to fully understand the material. She does assign HW but its not too much to handle. Does grade semi-strictly but gives enough extra credit to get an A in the class. She wants you to succeed so go to class & do your hw to get an easy A in the class. Do her exam study guides to ace all exams.
great teacher and extremely helpful.
Professor Beckstrand is amazing! I've never been good at math so I was nervous to take business calc but Beckstrand made the class so easy and understandable. Don't be fooled, you do have to work for your grade, but she provides all the tools to get an A. I started out the semester with a C and ended with an A. I'd definitely take her again!
Excellent Professor. Lectures consist of material from homework assignments, quizzes and exams. Offers extra credit, but you must work for your grade. She makes her self available if additional help is needed outside of class. Truly cares for her students. I will take her again.
Great instructor, loved her class. Show up/ pay attention then you'll pass. Makes it clear what she's looking for in exams. Never skip steps and ALWAYS solve her way if not then expect to lose points. If you do the Hw then quizzes are easy, Study guides help on exams and gives extra credit. Wants everyone to pass, and is very helpful @ office hours
Prof. Beckstrand is one of the best. I am personally not that good at math but she explains it the way you will understand it. She takes the time to repeat her work and explain what she did. She gives clear details on how she got the answers. She also gives a lot of EXTRA CREDIT.
She's gives Great Lectures and always stops to asks if their are any questions and wont move on until every question is answered. Clear and understandable, she actually cares about teaching. I'm diffenantly taking her for 211 and beyond because I know i'll learn math and its techniques from her. Highly recommend her.
This professor is the best professor I ever had. I actually learned so much in this class. It's Calculus 2, so be prepared to always do your homework and study hard. This professor will push you until the end. She drops the lowest quiz grade and lowest test grade. The 4 exams are the homework and she gives a study guide.
She's a great teacher, very detailed in her teaching. The toughness of the class really depends on how well you handle algebra. She will always stop to answer any questions and is accessible outside of class.
Professor Beckstrand Is an amazing person who will push you the whole semester to make sure you are learning her material. She will help you if you have any questions please never hestitate because she is here to help all her students. I would recommend her class because is very helpful and her exams are based off the homework please do it!
Professor Beckstrand is just amazing. So helpful and overworks herself for her students. She always breaks problems down so clearly during lecture and the homework isnt a lot if you keep on top of it each class. Quizzes are exact homework problems that youve already done, exams are similar but just as easy (she gives study guides for each exam)
Grade based off only quizzes and exams. Very easy to understand her lectures. Homework is optional as far as an assignment, however mandatory if you plan on finishing the class with an A. Tough grader in the sense everything written must be mathematically correct, however, practicing with homework really helps. Highly recommend to ALL math majors.
Very tough grader, you must complete math problems in the format and order that she teaches, otherwise you'll lose points. YOU MUST DO THE HOMEWORK. There are some extra credit opportunities, the lowest quiz grade is replace by your highest quiz score, and your lowest test score is replace by your final exam score. Very helpful and caring!
One of the best math professors at MSJC. I took her for diff eqns. ( one of the hardest math classes at MSJC), and passed with ease. She is always available to talk or help out in her office, she gives tons of extra credit, and her exams are basically straight from the homework.
Calculus 2 honors was great. I also took this professor for Calculus 1. She sets up the course to be in manageable pieces and offers extra credit on quizzes and exams as well as outside extra credit options. Calculus is hard so don't expect a breeze, but you won't find a better professor.
Professor Beckstrand is the best math teacher around. I took her for calc 1 and 2 and I really understood the math I didn't just memorize techniques. I wouldn't say her class is easy, you have to work but if you do, an A is definitely attainable. Highly recommend her!
I got 100% right answers on my test but ended up with a D because did not show all formulas and notations.
Professor Beckstrand was amazing! She teaches extremely well. You are able to understand everything in depth. She doesn't go too fast or too slow. I definitely recommend taking her!
Prof B. is hands down the greatest professor Ive ever had. This was my 3rd semester taking her after a whole year away from math (scary, right!?). I failed my first quiz, but she noticed my growth throughout the semester. Even though Im not a math major, she was nothing but encouraging to me regarding my progress. Super kickass/inspiring lady!!
Professor Beckstrand is by far the best math professor I have ever had. She is very picky about how problems are done, but she is very clear about how she wants them done. I learned so many things that were outside the scope of the class in office hours and she always went above and beyond anytime I asked a question. I wish I knew about her sooner.
If you are good at math this is your class, if not stay away! She doesnt allow note cards on tests which sucks bc I forget steps & formulas. HW is online &hard to follow if you enter it wrong you get the problem wrong even if its right. Im no good at math &when I asked a question on a problem she singled me out& made me feel awkward.
Probably the best thing about Prof. Beckstrand is her lecturing. She is so clear and skips no steps. She teaches you everything down to proper notation. I am not a fan of math, but with her it was incredible. Like any math class, LOTS of practice is required! HIGHLY recommend for anyone who actually needs to know calculus for their future paths.
She is a great professor and person in general. She is very caring about her students and makes sure everyone understands how to do the work.
This was the first instructor who pushed me to study and imbed math into my brain Study guides are like tests but she doesnt allow note cards so you must memorize formulas and how to apply them If you want to learn math and fall in love with it this is the professor for you I ended up with a 96 in the end because she replaced lowest test with final
Beckstrand is by far the best math professor I have ever had. She is probably my favorite professor at this school. Her quizzes are based on the homework and the test are based on quizzes. Calc 2 is hard but wasn't too difficult with her. If I had to finish calc I would do it with her even if she called a buzzkill
Really understanding and caring about everyone and their feelings . Really the best math teacher. Good at explaining and goes over until everyone understands. Some homework but without the homework I would be a little lost. Would def. take her again!
Highly recommend for all majors who need math. Clear teaching, very helpful, always willing to answer questions no matter how simple. She makes time to help, even through email. Homework is not graded but is mandatory to pass quizzes and exams (which is the entire grade). Strict on notation, but that is a good thing.
Second time with Ms. B. Truly incredible, patient, clear and concise, and very fair. You must practice, but she truly breaks things down so well. She answers all questions, no matter how dumb. Strict on notation, so if you will be lazy, do not take her. Highly recommend for those serious about math.
Mrs. B is an absolute wonder when it comes to teaching mathematics. I actually learned math and would have never seen myself getting a B in Statistics. She is caring and there for her students. Just attend lectures and get some tutoring if you dont understand a topic or have a minor question. She and her tutor will be eager to help. Outstanding!!!
Professor Beckstrand was a great teacher. She lectures on everything she tests. Her lectures are very structured and understandable. She is super sweet and willing to help anyone who asks for it. Show up to class, take notes, and get help when you need it and you will love her class.
She is an amazing professor. I have always struggled with math but was able to get a good grade in Calc 1. She will spend time with you one on one if need be and she likes to make sure the whole class understands before moving on.
Gives a lot of homework but no test. Kind and gives fast feedback. A great teacher for stats
If you are fearful of taking a stats class, fear no more! Prof. B is amazing at what she does! I went into this course thinking "just pass it, a C is fine", well, I finished with an A! Lots of HW (hello, stats!) quizzes and projects. Do the work, get help from tutors and Prof. B. PRACTICE-PRACTICE-PRACTICE! You will reap all the benefits
This class was a breeze. The homework offered three attempts and consisted of about 4-10 questions. There were no test but instead projects. She gave excellent feedback on the rough drafts for the project making earning an A easy. The tutor she had wasn't that good but Beckstrand was very helpful.
One of the best math professors at MSJC. She is very organized, thoroughly explains every step, replies to messages quickly, and provides great feedback. There are assignments due weekly. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. You have the option of turning in a first draft of your homework to receive her feedback before turning in the final draft.
Homework consisted of about 4-10 problems and offered three attempts to earn a 100%. There is no test but instead projects that were not too difficult. She gave great feedback on the rough draft which made earning an A easier. The in-class tutor was not that good but Beckstrand was helpful
The class itself is well organized and not difficult. However, I would not recommend choosing her. I had an A+ in class and she still was very rude to me. Not the best!
Marilena Beckstrand is a great professor! She is kind and patient with students. There is a fair amount of homework, not too much not too little. Knewton alta is kind of a pain. Statistics is difficult so you will still need to do your part as a student but if you pay attention to her lectures you will pass.
Ms. Beckstrand is a great professor. You can tell she cares about her students and loves math.
Due to Covid, this class had to be online, and personally, I can not learn online. I emailed her with my struggles of being online and she gave the best response a teacher could give. She is very knowledgeable and very caring. She is super patient and helped me pass my exam! She is a great teacher! Take her if you can!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Before her class, I thought I didn't like math, but she quickly changed my perspective. She responds quickly, is patient with her students, gives clear grading criteria, and her class format is amazing. I took it in person, so not sure how the online class is, but I would highly, highly recommend taking her in-person class.
Her class is very organized uses Knewton online,. Homework every week at least 5 assignments (10 questions each- 3 chances to get 100%). Not much extra credit opportunity sadly. Also, as someone who struggles with math her exams are worth 50% of your grade, if you do poor you will drop significantly & are timed (2 hours) I disliked this VERY much!!
Ms B is one of the most caring professors out there. She wants the best for students and goes out of her way to help and is willing to meet outside of office hours. The course consisted of a weekly HW assignment with a few DBs, 3 projects and 2 exams thru the semester. The lectures are very helpful and she is a graceful grader. I recommend her!!
Best math Professor I've had. She teaches the material clearly, gives good feedback on assignments, answers questions, responds quickly to emails, gives study guides, and if the class is hybrid/online she had review sessions over zoom before exams for last minute questions. She is strict on math notation and showing work so I wouldn't skip steps.
I took both math 211 and 212 with Beckstrand. She was a great teacher! Examples in class were good and videos online were well made. She really does a good job helping when you need it. I definitely recommend her if you want to understand calculus!
EXTREMELY meticulous grader, if there's a reason to dock a point she will. Simply mistakes in notation can lose you tons of points, everything has to be shown. Homework is graded for correctness as well. Really good and concise lectures however, you will learn a lot from this class and how to do it right. Grading might be less harsh in person.
Professor Beckstrand's online course was OK. The lectures lacked equations for harder questions on homework. Also the exams were sort of hard but I do recommend going to her office hours to get a better understanding. Expect mini projects and discussion boards after exams and about 4 assignments a week.
Love Prof Beckstrand! I'm taking her again for Calc 2. There were extra credit opportunities around every exam. The homework sometimes was a little confusing, but there were helpful videos attached to the questions. SI was fun and highly encouraged. She's understanding of personal situations and does what she can to still help your education
Very tough grader, unclear teaching, and excessive homework due in short amount of time.
Her grading was horrible. She would take off points for no reason and give barely any extra credit. She would make the tests and class unnecessarily hard.
Professor shows all her work on the board and explains the processes step-by-step. Answers questions (encourages questions). Office hours are available and there are extra credit opportunities at every exam. Definitely takes effort, although mostly for MATH211, not really about professor. I loved Beckstrand, 10/10 :)
Prof Beckstrands class was awesome. Her lectures were clear, concise, and taught the material well. She made a difficult class as easy as it could possibly be. She gives clear and detailed feedback on questions/mini projects. Truly cares about students and having them pass the class. Had good amount of extra credit in the semester too!
Beckstrand is a tough grader with hard exams, but she does teach well up until the last few weeks her lectures were great. If you take good notes and do the extra credit then you can get a high grade, but don't expect an easy A.
She never cares about the student and takes points off if you don't do it HER WAY the exams worth half of the grade and is so hard plus doesn't even relate to the review she gives out before. She only cares about the ones that knows and understands so if you want to learn she is not the one. I would never take any class with her again.
No way youre passing this class as a first time learner because she doesnt teach she just goes over evrything like a practice and doesnt care about the ones who doesnt know. I would not recommend to take her class.
One of the worse experience i had so far in my college years would not take her again and after this professor now i know i have to be careful choosing teachers.
So many tests and so many quizzes only with little bit grade means fail one exam you are done for the semester because the exams are worth 50 percent of your grade and she acts like its the only class you have .
Very tough grader, unclear teaching, and excessive homework due in short amount of time. You just have to get it done no matter what!!
Ms. B. clearly cares about her students. Besides her office hours, she is available outside class via email, discussion boards, and during math jams at the LRC. She will help you with homework and any questions you have. She gives a study guide for each exam and go over problems in details.
The assignments take 30min-8 HOURS. Her work on the whiteboard is unorganized and messy. The hw system (myopenmath) is very frustrating to use sometimes. She helps students in any way she can. She explains poorly, don't expect to pass if you aren't good at math. I heavily disagree on most of the points she took off my exams. I still learned a lot.
By the end of the semester, over half of my class had withdrawn. Calculus is hard to begin with but her teaching style does not make it easier. Fast paced lectures focused on examples rather than concepts/learning. Exams are worth 75% of total grade, perfect homework and quiz grades cannot help you.
Caring professor. The class is fast-paced and she was readily available for questions via Canvas inbox or office hours. She's very helpful but you have to ask questions. Lectures would be mostly examples. Little review of pre-calculus and algebra concepts; if you don't have a good math (algebra and trig) foundation, it's hard.
I took this class during summer so it being fast paced was expected but it didn't feel fast at all. The exams are exactly like the study guides but tweaked a bit. Always answers questions in a way that doesnt make you feel ashamed. Extra credit for quizzes and exams, allowing you to retake part of the exam if you are struggling. 100% take her
I don't know how anyone is grading this teacher highly. I have never had such a difficult course because of a teacher. If you get stuck on a problem, you are on your own to figure out how to solve it. She does not let examples from open math on most homework questions. Her examples don't cover all the criteria and grades only on your scratchwork
This professor is very understanding, and her lectures are clear and not long. She does grade strictly and expects you to solve problems using her methods, but she provides plenty of flexibility with late passes for quizzes and homework, plus opportunities for test corrections. Her office hours are very helpful; she ensures you truly understand.
TAKE BECKSTRAND. Although her class is very test-heavy, she helps you prepare SO well and has exam reviews, and zoom review sessions, office hours, and even if you do not do so good on a test, she has retake opportunities to get some credit back. The workload is so doable, not hard at all, and she has unlimited late passes on homework/quizzes.
This class was A LOT of work; however, she is an amazing professor. Does a great job explaining each topic. The examples you do in class/review sheets prepare you well for the exams. You will need to put in the time and effort to be successful, but she gives you all the tools needed to succeed. Highly recommended for someone going onto higher math.
Firstly, I'd like to say that she is a really nice person, she just isn't the greatest instructor. Her lectures go on for three hours, she provides examples more than she really explains concepts, and she's a TOUGH grader. Don't expect an easy A or a B even. She is, however, easily available outside of class which is such a privilege.
