this is the best math teacher. she helped me more than my h.s. teachers.she is very understanding and helpful.
easy class, good teacher. she is very very nice, but needs to use more real world examples. its a very useful area of math but comes across really dry.
I had Modi over the summer for Calc II and she is one of THE BEST I've ever had. I felt like I was getting my tuition's worth at Temple for once.
The best teacher i have EVER had! Very helpful and great at explaining the material. Knows how you are doing and if its not good she will help you until you understand. She's a really cool person too!
This woman was great. She actually took time to explain things in class and made me feel welcome to ask questions. One of the best teachers I ever had! Sometimes went a little fast, but stillo a great teacher!
She is a wonderful teacher, though she goes *way* too fast. Helpful and easy to approach. Great teacher.
The absolute BEST math teacher I've ever had. She does tend to go through material quicker than most teachers, but she is always available for help outside class. I've never had a math teacher that actually CARED about my education prior to her.
The best teacher at Temple. Very helpful and cares. Gave me an extra point on my test too.
i hate math....but this time around i actually liked it because i actually understood it. She explains stuff so simply, she doesn't make it complicated like other teachers
She was the best and very helpful
Great teacher!!
The BEST teacher that I have ever had at Temple University. She is very helpful and geniunely cares about her students. I took her for Pre-Calc and Calc II over summer session. I enjoyed every class and enjoyed calculus because of her. She is a very fair teacher and always looking out for her students.
Modi is an awesome teacher!! She goes out of her way to help students and explains the concepts better than any other teacher I've had at Temple.
Excellent teacher, always willing to help, asks for alot of participation in class, friendly
Excellent teacher, very open to questions, very friendly, cares about how her students are doing, grades fairly
if u have to take calc take her or Lorenz! Downing is a little hyper but so helpful and explains EVERYTHING. homework is mandatory bc quizes are from them-she lets u use the HW for 2 of the 6 problems on the quiz. if u dont kno how to do a prob during the test she'll give hints and also gives some group quizes. shes a great teacher
Modi is the single best teacher I have ever had, although she can go rather fast for some people, she is always there to help, and will go out of her way to help you understand. Shes a great teacher, a fair grader, and a really cool person too!
Modi is the nicest math teacher I have every had. She is knowledgeable and really wants her students to do well. A former accountant, she is familiar with the math. She is very clear and throws in a joke or two here and there. She is also the math coordinator (so she makes the tests you will take)!
she is extremly good. she is the kind of teacher that want the student to pass her class
Modi was the BEST! I was awful at calc in highschool, but took this class and got an A! She is an excellent teacher, always available for extra help, and is easy to understand.
Modi rocks. Not only does she understand the content, but she knows how to teach. Her lectures are clear and concise. She's available if you need help, and willing to go out of her way for you if you show initiative. She can be a bit hyper and flustered at times, but she's still the best prof in the math department, hands down.
All around, she is fantastic. She's a quick thinker, so she may move a little fast sometimes, but the material is VERY easy to learn. She truly cares about her students, keeps it real, is personable and will most likely knock you straight if you're slacking. So don't slack. Sign up for her ASAP !!
Awesome teacher if you take class seriously, she will make every attempt to help you, she was a tutor before a teacher so she know how to explain things clearly.
shes sooooo nice. especially when you go to her for office hours. extremely helpful. one of the best teachers ive ever had throughout college!!
Good enough. She admits she hates teaching this class, but she's nice and will help you if you need it. You need to go to class -- missing one or two classes will leave you far behind.
Modi is an excellent teacher. She really helps her students learn the material. I found the class very helpful. Modi also goes out of her way and loves to see her students succeed. I found it very helpful to meet with her durning her office hours and she will do her best to make sure that you understand the material. She gets my A+
I took Calculus 2 with her over the summer and she was all right but I think her score is overrated from what I saw. Doesn't make you feel comfortable to ask questions because she'll make you feel dumb (or cry like one girl in our class) but super dedicated and helpful at office hours (even though she'll make you feel dumb). Better for Pre-Calc.
I also took her for Calculus 2 over the summer. She was definitely concerend with helping her students and having them do well. She offered plenty of office hours, and was willing to answer any homework questions. Yet, at times she definitely acts condescendingly when answering a question. Most of her weekly quizzes were harder than other sections.
Modi is the best math teacher I've ever had. Calculus 2 is an INTENSE course and she not only showed us great examples and tricks, but she taught us how to take on the course without fear. She's beyond friendly and always offers help and meets office hours. If you have the choice, take a math course with Modi!!!!
Modi was always very helpful. I took her for Calc 2 in the summer session which was an intense workload, but Modi offered many office hour opportunities, and if you did the assigned homework problems you would of done fine in the class (quizzes come right from hw!) Definitely take her if you have the option!
Best math professor ever. So clear about everything, it's like a breath of fresh air. She WANTS you to LEARN. If you go to class, take notes and complete the WebAssign HW, you will kick @$$. There's 10 quizzes and online homework. I feel so much more confident in my mathematical ability now that I've had her. Thank you Modi!
Modi is awesome. She's a bit rough around the edges, but actually wants you to do well. Take her if you're actually interested in learning, but avoid if you want an easy grade. You WILL learn Calc with her. She's a very nice person, but can come off as a bit pushy. She will demand a lot from her students, but offers awesome info about past quizzes
Modi is wonderful! Calculus is naturally difficult for most people but she was always willing to help and she explained things so well! If you have to take Calculus, you MUST get Modi!
Bit frazzled at times but explains the material well and answers emails quickly! Also she lets you do your homework in her office in case you have questions which is super helpful
Very difficult professor, but you do better on the final/midterms compared to the sections with other teachers
Modi is the best professor I have ever had. Trust me. She gives you everything you need to do well on quizzes and exams. Just pay attention,do not miss classes and you will be fine. Take her for calculus and you will get an easy A. You should study, of course, but it is not painful as with other professors at Temple. Modi is the best!
One of the best professors I've had she really taught what you need to know and did it clearly. One of the most reasonable math teachers I've ever had as well
Awesome. Simply awesome. Hope she's teaching calculus II
Professor Downing(Modi) is the best calculus professor at Temple. She truly cares her students and will go out of her way to ensure that everyone succeeds. She prepares everyone extremely well for the tests. She teaches you the tricks and makes sure you conceptually understand. Make sure you visit her office hours (you can do your hw there)
Modi is the best Calc professor at Temple, EVER! She pushes you to work hard and helps you master conceptual tricks that help you learn the material. Recommended 100 %!
Modi was a great teacher. Honestly never got less than a 92 on a test and even got 102 on the final. Quizzes are cake and she teaches the concepts very well but I also did take AP Calc in hs with an amazing teacher also which could have affected this. But still I really wanted modi for calc 2 but she doesn't teach it sadly.
Modi Best Calc one teacher by far great person in general make sure you take notes HIGHLY recommend taking calc 1 with her
Very useful teacher!!
Best teacher ever! As long as you do the homework and study you will do fine. Always available for help.
Modi truly wants her students to do well. She is a little rough around the edges but all in all she is one of the best calc teachers at Temple. I highly recommend taking her.
She is horrible, very demanding with high expectations. Her way or the high way. Does not feel obligated to help student, took her for calc 1.
My had Modi for calc 2 for fall 2014 and it was an amazing class. Calc 2 is a difficult class and there's no getting around that, but Modi is always open to office hours and her explanations REALLY help you understand. Anyone who bad mouths literally prob didn't study or utilize her. It also helps how down to earth she is. I def recommend!!!
I had her for calculus 1 and I failed it. She's so freaking hard and talks way too fast. I'm taking notes and listening to her talk simultaneously so I don't really understand everything. She writes really sloppy so that's how my notes come out.
I took her for Calc I. This was the first math class in which I ever received an A. Calculus in college is going to be a difficult class no matter who you take, but Moddy speaks clearly and explains exactly what the department looks for when grading the exams. She wants you to pass and wants you to know the material. Very helpful in office hours.
I LOVE MODI! She is amazing in her teaching & works with you. She is extremely understandable. I'll never forget the times she would warn me on my mistakes before an exam. I was deeply touched &am astound by how much she truly cares for each and everyone of her students! With that being said, you do need to work hard if you want a good grade.
I honestly love professor downing, and she made me love calculus, respectively. I would not have made it this far through the semester without her guidance or encouragement. If you struggle with math, and want to obtain an A in calculus (and you're willing to work hard) take Downing. She's awesome.
One of the only kind, understanding, and genuinely helpful professors in Temple's math department. You also won't be surprised by anything that comes up on the tests because she makes sure that you know by heart all the tough material in this course. I love Downing and hope to have her again if I take more math courses here.
She is not a fun teacher, moves quickly, and jumps around. The material is all there but it is confusing in how she presents it toward the class.
Modi is one of the best math instructors in Temple University. I had her for calculus 1&2. She has a great teaching approach that helps you understand the material and prepares you for the tests&quizzes. Make sure to visit her office hours because she can help you do your homework. Quizzes are a bit tough, but if do the homework you'll be fine.
Absolutely one of the best math instructors I've ever had. She's passionate about what she teaches and understands it very well. Had her for calc 1 and would love to have her for every math class following. HIGHLY suggest. Do the work and take the quizzes and homework seriously.
Professor Downing is honestly amazing! I had to retake calculus because I failed the first time. I didnt understand anything but Downing really helped me out!! I went to her office hours, not as often as I should have but I did go and it helped SO much! She takes attendence every class so dont skip but her lectures are fun so you shouldnt want to!
Downing is one of the best professors in the department. Calculus is very difficult. She presents the material very well and will actually seek out students if they perform poorly on a quiz. She offers extended office hours for extra help and truly wants everyone to succeed. Will take her again for future math courses.
Downing was the best professor I ever had for math. She thoroughly taught every section with many example problems. She would explain more if a student needs help and is very kind-hearted. She cares for each of students grade. Overall, she is an amazing professor and would highly recommend her.
Mrs. downing explained things clearly and did man different examples.
Professor Downing was an amazing professor, one of the best in the department. Explains content very well, available to ask question, expects everyone to learn so go in with the intention of doing so.
Downing manages to be one of the biggest hard-asses you will ever meet, who also happens to be a sweet ol lady at the same time. At the end of the day, if u want a good grade in calc, take her!! She gives really detailed notes (often teaching with her methods, rather than the textbook's method), and is always willing to help outside of class.
Downing was the best math professor I've had at Temple. She comes off as strict (no cellphones), but you realize quickly it's because she wants you to succeed. The weekly quizzes are exactly the same as homework problems, so doing the homework is beneficial! She prepares you very well for all exams. I would definitely recommend taking her.
Professor Downing really cares about your success, utilize her availability outside of class if you have a hard time keeping up. She's a tough grader but its necessary in order to prepare you for the big tests. The more you get to know her, the more you realize how friendly she is. Don't skip and dont use tech during class, you'll be called out.
Easy! Homework aren't graded, it's just for review because the homework problems are literally the quizzes and exams! Few of the quizzes and exams were take home too. The only thing she's strict about is you being on your phone during class. Other than that, very nice lady, and I'm glad I had her.
She was a really good professor and prepared you for the exams. She comes off as a little mean and intimidating but is actually super nice once you get to know her. Very accessible in office hours and is accomodating of any personal circumstances as well.
A really kind lady and helpful during office hours. This was her first year teaching statistics, but did her best to teach it well! Understand how to do the problems assigned from the textbook, ask questions during lectures, do the review packets, and you'll be guaranteed a high grade in the class!
Professor Downing was an incredible professor. I had her for Calculus 2 and I wish I was able to take her again. She warns you from the very beginning that you have to put work into this class if you want to do well. She cares about her students. Her office hour helped out me out tremendously. Math 1042 is a hard class but she made it enjoyable.
Take Downing if possible! She is absolutely amazing and the best professor I have had. She gives homework quizzes every week, but these are very helpful. She is an amazing person and I WOULD take her again!!
IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE HER, TAKE HER! best professor I have ever taken and she literally cares about her students so much and if you do all the homework and web assign her way there is no way you can get anything lower than an A.
I found Calculus surprisingly enjoyable thanks to Prof. Downing. She assigns you to do the HW but will give you specific feedback to help improve for midterms/finals. Very thorough with lectures, knows her stuff very well, and is a very caring person. I initially struggled with Calculus a lot but I've found it to be much more manageable since!
Professor Downing is a great Calculus instructor. She knows the material, but more importantly, knows how to teach it. Lectures and quizzes were based off the homework problems, which help for Exams. Pay attention in class, do all of the homework (written and online) DO the review questions for each exam, and you will pass comfortably.
I think professor downing is the best choice for calc 1. She prepares us very well for the tests and gives us a solid explanation about all that u need. her quizzes were the same as the homework problems, but she changed it a bit when we moved online. A strict professor when it comes to using phones during her class, so be ready to miss ur phone;)
She is a good professor, but her behaviour was unprofessional
meanest professor i have ever seen!
she can be really aggressive but her quizzes are the same as the hw so do the hw and you'll be fine. she is also extremely specific about the way things are written and can take off small points here and there if it isn't proper wording
Meanest professor Ive ever had. Despite me taking Calculus in high school and doing well, she made this my most difficult and stressful class. Very unprofessional. Constantly cuts students off and insults students. Excuses herself by stating Im Italian which is not an excuse for being rude. Extremely picky with grading homework and quizzes.
One of the worst math professors at Temple. Take it if you want to get points off of every little thing on an exam making it completely impossible to pass the course itself. I absolutely regret this decision of picking her class. Do yourself a favor and don't pick her.
She makes things a lot harder than they need to be. Her lectures do little to clarify any of the course material. She can be condescending towards her students. Her voice can get SUPER annoying. She'll talk to you like you're 5 years old. I basically had to teach myself the course outside of class with Youtube. Being in her class is a waste of time
I had Downing for an online course because of 'rona. Given all her positive reviews, I guess her friendliness and other good qualities don't translate well over Zoom. My impression of her is as follows: She's a rude, pedantic harpy who revels in the confusion and misery of her students. Also, she doesn't understand tech and makes it your problem
Sometimes shes nice but sometimes shes rude. She goes wayyy too fast but the best professor for calc 2 according to the test averages. Assigns a lot of homework but it does help tremendously. The material itself is just hard so you have to put in work. Good luck.
Honestly, she is not the best professor in the online class. Because she seems like not skilled in an online class. The singularity of her class has the homework for each chapter. But homework will really help to reach a great grade. My class average came out the second median which always over 90. Do not hesitate to ask her for help just email her
I took Professor Downing based off of the good reviews I saw on here, but my experience with her was quite different. She is very condescending and her notes are extremely hard to follow and read. I ended up teaching myself the entire course
She is always willing to help outside of class. She can be rude sometimes but I just think its because she's older. If u want to get an A, take her. She is a good teacher and made calculus easier than college algebra. u have to put in the work don't get me wrong, but she prepares you so well for exams. She knows how to make concepts understandable
Good teacher.
She can come across aggressive at times which is a valid complaint, but she seems to care about her students success a lot more than other professors do. Gives you a lot of homework, which is annoying but it actually pays off in the long-run since you will be prepared for exams. Very available outside of class too. Would definitely recommend.
At first, she may feel like a difficult person to approach. But the more you know, the more you will know that she truly cares about her students and tries to help them. Mathematics is a subject that requires students to make efforts on their own efforts. Be sure to email her if you need help. She will gladly help you.
Prof. Downing was not successful in creating a productive and personable online classroom. She often gets angry and yells at students. She told us "I'm old and vain, and you'll never see my face." Some students did well in the class, but I believe that is the result of their own merit and hard work, not because of an effective professor.
Professor Downing made calculus 2 seem like any other course. She is a caring lady who only wants the best for her students, even making multiple off hour zoom rooms for test review. Yes, she has extra required homework, but this is reflected in her courses topping the test scores every single test we took (first or second out of 25 sections).
Downing was the best. Go to class, pay attention, ask questions and most importantly do/understand the homework. Quizzes are almost exactly like the HW. She takes a little bit to warm up to but once you get used to her she's great. The only thing I didn't like was that she never showed her face. But she's a great prof, I wish she was teaching Calc3
Be prepared to fail if you are not smart. The math department is the worst in Temple history and her lectures doesnt help that much to make us do well. She gets cranky when a student says something stupid which is unprofessional. I also hate their zero-tolerance cheating policy is unacceptable and unfair. Be prepare to fail and have no curves.
She comes across as aggressive but she is the best calc prof I've ever had. Her lectures are lengthy but to the point. Does a lot of example problems which are very helpful. Do ALL of the assigned problems, pay attention in class, and you will pass. I transferred colleges & wish I could taken Downing with me to take Calc ll.
Out of the math dept, probably one of the best profs. Don't be put off by her blunt personality, she generally cares about students and wants to help. GO TO OFFICE HOURS IF YOU'RE STRUGGLING and email her with questions. Do the homework bc quiz problems are similar. Lenient about late work too and a nicer grader than other profs.
Get ready to know too much about this lady's personal life. She's an okay professor, she will help you. But every time I ask a question she makes me feel like an idiot. If she's gone over it once, do not ask a question because she will expect you to know it. A good thing is that she tries to teach the easiest way to solve problems.
Downing spends more time whining abt phones being out than teaching. It feels very "high-school." When she actually is teaching, she makes copious amounts of mistakes & covers them up with excuses. She's also a harsh grader, things that are supposed to be graded for "completion" are graded down to the very last detail. Pick any other calc teacher.
She does not teach very well and relies on videos you have to take notes on before you even learn the lesson. She goes very fast and if you have a question, she will talk down on you which makes it very hard and scary to ask a question ever again. Sough grader, will say grades hw on completeness, but grades on accuracy (at least in the beginning)
Generally rude to students and treats them like children. Moves way too quickly in class and gets annoyed when students ask questions. She takes it very personally and will scream at you if you skip even one class.
I know a lot of people in my class who don't like Professor Downing. She's very strict about no phones and doesn't seem to like laptops for taking notes. Once you get past all that, she's an amazing professor. If you pay attention in class, and do the homework, it's easy to pass.
Professor Downing has been one of the best math professors I've had here at Temple. In the classroom she is very strict about phones and computers being out, but its because she genuinely cares about her students and she wants everybody to pass. Test are such a big portion of the grade and if you do the homework and review problems you'll be fine
Amazing professor. Reading done as homework so most lectures consisted of examples of problems, but every step of the problem was explained clearly and concisely. Very personable and funny.
She is a great prof who WILL work with you if you go to office hours, pay attention during lectures, & ask questions. She is strict and hard to work with at first, but if you talk to her after class she does often listen to suggestions. Her email is always open for questions and she frequently does zoom calls. Tests matter more than quizzes or hw!!
Professor Downing was amazing for Calculus II and I am excited to have her again for Differential Equations. She talks fast and does notes quick, but she is really good at explaining the material and is extremely helpful if you ask for it. Calc II is hard because it has such a dense curriculum but Downing helps you digest it the best in my opinion.
(Diffeq) Professor Downing is absolutely incredible. She will work with you and help you so long as you help yourself. She can be a bit tough, but she is super real. If you're not trying, she's not going to go out of her way to help you (because she would be wasting her time). Tests are a big portion of the class; she grades generously. she's great
Amazing at explaining concepts, provides you with the information you need to know/ memorize for test and quizzes. Simple explainations, organized canvas page, and gives detailed feedback when asked about. She's extremely caring and wants you to succeed! Her strictness in the classroom is something you shouldn't play around with though.
Grades quizzes/exams based on her opinion. Also, a harsh grader because I received an F on an exam when I should have earned a B because she takes off every little thing that aren't a mistake on the exams. AVOID at all costs!
Took the summer section which was fast as expected, but worse by being taught by prof Downing. She made it clear that she couldn't wait to retire in the beginning of the course and proceeded through the course w that attitude. She's clear teaching in class and her worksheets help, but she's rude at times. She gets annoyed for students' questions.
Only 1021: Explains every step and will answer questions. HOH so you'll repeat a lot. Can be a little rough but will help you & is receptive. Many resources. Txtbk HW is great for quizzes, & tests are review based. Participate! Don't like her? You'll know fast. Weekly quizzes and HW. Not a harsh grader, but pay attention to what she teaches.
Professor Downing is a pretty solid teacher when it comes to Algebra not the best not the worst.
I don't know about the rest of the summer class, but I had a great time. She is an extremely blunt person who sometimes says out of pocket things, but she's also literally 60. She definitely has her favorites (don't get on her bad side), but her feedback was always thorough and helpful. Really wish I took her for my other math courses!
She's a great person, and really cares about students. Flipped Class but she goes over examples which help. Quiz once a week (DO EACH OF THE RECOMMENDED HW PROBLEMS: quiz is based on this). Her quiz's are easy, you can ask her questions and she'll give you hints. If you try ,and go the extra step to do beyond her packets of hw, you will do great.
Demeanor in class is abrasive, combative and erratic. Intense environment makes focusing difficult. All material will be covered at least once in class.
Professor Downing is such a sweet lady. She comes off as strict but stay in her good graces (go to class and don't use your phone) and you will be fine. Only two grades were quizzes and exams based on literal homework problems. If you review the homework and practice you'll be all set for an A.
Professor Downing had great lectures with proactive problem solving. There was a good amount of homework, but everything was directly applicable to the quizzes and tests throughout the semester. Definitely one of the best math teachers ive had.
Overall, Professor Downing was not bad. She does lectures pretty quickly, so I recommend reviewing lectures and homework outside of class. Her quizzes directly correlated to the homework and packets she gave, so I definitely recommend doing them. Calc was not my strong suit, so I did struggle in the class, especially since she was pretty fast.
Professor Downing is one of those teachers you like as a person but not necessarily as an educator. This class was unnecessarily hard, she is a tough grader and VERY particular about how you do things (how you show your work, the way in which you write it). It"s a cannon event you must experience for yourself. :(
Lectures are unorganized, she rushes through examples without explaining & often does them incorrectly. She will take off points if you don't do problems her way, even if they are correct. All students have different ways of learning and understanding things and her limitations made this class exceedingly difficult. Take literally anyone else.
Her lectures are good and most of the homework is optional, although her strict "no phones ever" policy can sometimes make you feel like you are back in high school.
Absolutely LOVE Prof Downing. I retook this course with her since I had a great first experience with her. Extremely accessible for office hours. Fair grader and overall a sweet, caring lady. She's VERY knowledgable, so no wonder her classes had the highest test averages. Sad to see her retire, but grateful to have known and been taught by her.
