ugh! I've never taken such a horrible class. I have never tried so hard to end up failing. The class went from 150 to about 70 when I dropped the course halfway through. You cannot understand her. Her exams don't make sense and they have nothing to do with what she lectures on. To be honest there is no point in even showing up to class.
She is a good, entertaining, lecturer, provides long but accurate study guides, and makes herself available for out of class help. She claims not to curve grades and in Bio I gives multiple choice tests. But passing this class without studying is not possible if you aren't familiar with biology. You must read the textbook to pass!
Absolutely worthless! Cant understand her, test are insane! Gregor Mendel himself couldn’t pass this class. Take this class and prepare for the worst experience of you life. Highest grade in our class on a test was 84. No curve, one test took 4.5 hrs and then we were kicked out, Studying 20+hrs for a test will land you a 51%. Goodtimes.
People complain about her here, but in real life she will do everything to help you succeed. Sit up front where you can hear and see her, ask questions when you don't understand, do the reading, and you can pass this class. Cruz-Alvarez is caring, funny, and a talented lecturer who really knows how to teach, but you have to do your work!
Genetics is a hard class, but she is so helpfull. one of the best professors at FGCU!!!
Issues in Science & Tech. - Basically assigns presentations for the entire semester and doesn't teach a single class after the first week. She wasn't even present for my presentation and then had the gall to give me a B. Pretty much a useless class but it was required in my case.
I took her for a current topics class and she tried to fail me in a one credit class the semester before graduation. She is horrible at explaining things. if you ask for help just hope that your one of her favorites or else your out of luck.... nost unfair useless professors i have ever had!
Terrible! Dont take her if you can help it! Can hardly understand her b/c she doesn't care to TRY & speak without a heavy spanish accent. Doesn't care what's going on in your personal life, she'll fail you if you miss one 2 many classes. Never smiles, just very impersonal. Had her for a 1 credit course with as much work as a 4 credit course. YUK!!!
Horrible teacher horrible teacher!!! DO NOT TAKE HER!!! Unless you eat, breathe and S**T genetics! I Took this class twice and I hate it so much!
Great Teacher! You must study and you must ask questions. Just quit complaining and learn the material and you will do fine.
She is tough. She assigns lots of homework which takes me 15-20hr study sessions on the weekends to complete. I should say that I read all the chapters thoroughly which is why it takes so long. I received a 56 on the first test. Planning to drop on last day and take another prof. I have learned a lot, though not enough for her exam.
I would not recommend this professor. The professor was not very helpful in answering questions in or out of class. I felt like I received a B on the first exam, but got a 54 with little feedback when I got the test back after almost 3 weeks of them grading it. The professor also uses 2 other books when presenting lecture. :(
Class is hard , structure awful and not clear
she is absolutely terrible! I took this class with another professor the semester before and I missed passing by 2 points. so I thought it would be easier the second time but I got stuck with this professor. I was even more confused and was forced to drop the class. DON'T TAKE HER CLASS! almost every person in my class had to drop it. TERRIBLE!
This professor, although a very nice person, is by far one of the worst teachers I have ever had. There is not much help given by her and her tests are almost impossible to get an A on. I went into her class thinking I could handle it and ignored her ratings on Rate My Professor and I highly regret it.
Loved her class; it was sooo informational. She is HARD, I can't stress that enough. But will work with you for hours to succeed. All the classes I have taken her for have been the hardest classes of my life; but you learn so much if you are willing to.
She is a nice person and knows genetics. She does care about her students, but something gets lost between lecture and exams. Study for 20+ hours outside of class, do all homework, practice problems, and get them correct. Take exam; 50%. The way she collects homework drives you bonkers. I would take another, Tough to say because I like her.
Best professor to take for Genetics if you're serious about graduate/professional school. There is a lot of work involved, so if you're lazy you wont make it in her class. Attend class, do the homework, and ask for any help. Prof Cruz is extremely helpful and kind. One of the best professors at FGCU.
best professor I've had (other than Erdman) she's hard but I've never learned so much in one class. I wish I could retake genetics... TAKE HER & DO THE WORK! You'll be so smart at the end! :) trust me, its worth the time & work. From-bio major taking 18 credits (this is my favorite class)
...if you actually care about this subject then you couldn't ask for a better professor! She's beyonnnndd brilliant & will challenge you/help you understand. If you're up for actual learning & hard work, take her. She's THE BEST!
She knows her stuff and does a nice job of making it clear to students. She's a sweet woman and always helpful.
Do not take this professor. She is a great teacher but does not care about your grade. Helpful but office hours are really inconvenient. Her grading makes no sense. Had a 4.0 until this class. Amount of homework and time it takes is ridiculous. If you have other classes forget it. Her grading and how she teaches the whole class will drive you nuts.
DO NOT TAKE HER! Her class is ridiculously hard, you cant understand her. I spent days studying for exams I barely passed. Her grad student assistants were much better teachers!! I honestly can't believe I passed with a C+, but it was only because I spent an entire week studying for a CUMULATIVE FINAL (20 chapters)!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS,
Her class difficult because she believed her students are capable of more than they think. Go to her office hours, she's very helpful. If you just want to raise your GPA, don't take her class. If you want to learn then she is the professor for you.
I really hate seeing her rating so low, Dr. Cruz-Alvarez is a fantastic professor. You will learn so much in her class, she believes in and respects her students. Her class is not easy, but I learned so much in it. She is extremely helpful, and always willing to go over any material again.
Take Genetics alone with no other classes. This class has the amount of material and homework as 3 bio major classes! All the homework is assigned too late. The hw doesn't help prepare you for the exams, it's all filler information. When it comes time to study for the exams you only have time to do the HW. Take geneticslast it's not a pre-requisite
She dose not teach you how to think about genetics; and by this I mean that she gives basic info in class, however for the hw and test she the answers are very complex for the short response questions and she does not relate the lecture to the basic reasoning on how to come at the question so you will not know how to do them till after testsHW.
Dr. Cruz Alvarez is a fantastic professor. I took her class a while ago but I never realized how much I learned from her. I wish I could take her class again. It's a very hard class and you have to be ready for it. It's an upper level biology class. At this point, you should be learning things and not just looking for an easy A.
Dr. Alvarez is a great teacher. She know her information very well and if I had more time to devote to the class, I wouldn't have struggled as much. Homework is a necessity and the extra questions prep you for the test. Make sure to take excellent notes and pay attention the whole time!
I have had to drop two different courses because of Cruz-Alvarez's thick thick accent and lack of clarity. Took bio with her and had to drop it, and then accidentally took genetics with her and again had to drop it. She means well, but her accent had me straining to listen, and her exams are not on anything she lectures on. WOULD DEFINITELY AVOID!!
The information is clear and the materials on her lectures are whats on her tests. The accent not hard to understand at all. However, she is an EXTREMELY critical grader, and her methods for collecting HW are weird and I hated it. No way to tell how well you're doing in the class. Consistently scored above average on tests: Still got a B+
You may struggle with her genetics class, however, I am currently in medical school and just corrected one of my professors because of what I learned in Cruz-Alvarez's class. Ended up being my only B in all of college, but you learn the material for sure, and it stays with you even three years later!
This is the hardest class I have ever taken, and I've had some pretty tough ones. However, I now know more about genetics than I could ever imagine. Tough teacher, but she truly cares and wants her students to learn. If you're looking for an easy class-this isn't the one. If you're looking to learn some hard core genetics you're in the right spot.
This professor is extremely difficult. If you have no other classes on your schedule then taking this class is fine. This professor gives homework that can take hours to complete in short amounts of time. It can be hard to understand her lectures sometimes because of her teaching style. A majority of people I've talked to failed her class horribly.
In response to most people's reviews about Dr Cruz-Alvarez, if you cannot understand her, you should quit school and work at walmart. She is NOT difficult to understand. However, she is incredibly tough. That cannot be stressed enough. But she is SO thorough, and as long as you listen during her lectures and put in the work, you will know so much.
Incredibly hard class. Take with another professor no matter what. She's a very smart lady but not a good teacher at all. Her homework is basically just busy work and even she is too lazy to grade everyones work so she picks randomly who turns in the homework. More than half of my class dropped the class and about half of those who stayed failed.
Yes she has high standards, yes the class is extremely time consuming, but it's worth it. She's a very sweet lady and the reason why she seems difficult is because she genuinely cares about you learning genetics. At the end of the day, she is not unreasonable.
Her tests are long, like more than 2 or 3 hours long, and physically impossible. If you are taking her, take this class alone otherwise you won't have nearly enough time to study and do well. GPA destroyer
I filled this out before I finished taking the class to warn others. Please do not take this class with her. The class average on most exams is around a 50. She does not curve exams, no extra credit, most of your grade is based on exams. 15 total homeworks graded on accuracy, 5 hours to complete each one. Exam questions that werent taught in class
The worst teacher I've ever had. Her homework and exams are impossible to pass (she gives NO extra credit) and she doesn't post any of your grades to canvas so you will have no idea what you have in the class. She has only emailed the entire class our midterm letter grades once, but would not even tell us the percentage when we asked.
One of the best professors I've ever had EVER. She is extremely challenging, this cannot be stressed enough, but she will make sure you leave that class knowing your genetics. I learned so much more form her than I would have anyone else. Anyone who failed deserved to, and you shouldn't be a bio major of you can't handle courses like this.
What ever you do, do not take this professor. She is an extremely hard grader. Her homeworks can be over 100 questions long, then she adds a seperate assignment on top of each that you must bring to class. Her 50 question exams will burn you out by the time you get halfway through. This class stressed me to the point my hair was truly falling out.
(Took genetics) Ive always gotten As and Bs in this bio major and this is the only professor I actually cant stand. Youll spend hours on homework that she might not even collect and the exams are impossible. I basically killed myself for this class and got a C. sure I know what it takes to be in this major but this prof is unbelievable.
Worst professor at FGCU and im not exaggerating. When I emailed her or went to her office hours for help she was always in a bad mood and straight up made me feel so bad about myself. Her exams and homework (which is a chance she wont collect yours) takes forever to complete. Honestly im a good student and this is the only class I HATED. don't take
Dr. Cruz-Alvarez is really kind and always willing to help. She's also extremely tough but knows her stuff and is super approachable, she let me come to her office for extra help almost weekly. Don't be scared of taking her, just be ready to work for your grade.
She's a nice lady (when she's not condescending), but definitely the worst class I've ever taken in my life. So much hw, lab reports due day after exam. Exam questions dissimilar to what we learned on the hw. You can't see your grade throughout the course, grades hw but doesn't show you what you got wrong. Waste of time and money. Save yourself
You have to pay attention every second of the lecture and take notes of every single thing she says otherwise you will miss something that is on the test. Very harsh grader on labs, homeworks and tests. She's a great person, but makes it very very hard to pass her class --> even worse since switching to online for covid.
If you have the option to take another prof do it! If not, save it for later or take it at another school. She never puts grades up, makes you do assignments that aren't graded, and grades EXTREMELY HARD. My midterm lab grade wasn't graded until the last day of the semester so I couldn't adjust my 2nd lab for a better grade. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!!!
very knowledgeable professor, but for students it was just too much. she's very open about the fact that "only 3 students get an A per semester" with her.. unclear grading criteria and she grades HARD. she does not input grades into Canvas all year which makes it hard for students to judge where they're at. overall tough class, wouldn't take again.
I loved Dr. Cruz, she lectures on everything you need to know for the exams and homework, so no reading required unless you prefer it. She's a really sweet lady that cares about her students and provides several opportunities to help students outside of class. Yes, she is tough, but just pay attention and take advantage of her office hours.
Overall one of the hardest classes I have taken ever. If you do not have to take her, don't. Her tests take at least 3-5 hours each, loads of HW and its extremely difficult, and she is the hardest grader I have ever met. She is super sweet and if you go to office hours and show her you are trying she is nicer grading wise. I only passed bc Covid.
Terrible teacher that made learning so unnecessarily difficult. Have to write down every little thing she says so you won't have time to really listen and comprehend whats going on. I've taken two classes with her and had to drop them, then took classes again with a different teacher and passed easily. Not a bad person but 100% the worst teacher.
I know that sometimes you have to take a class and so you ignore the ratings but please please please do not take a class with this woman. I read the ratings and thought oh well I'll just suck it up. WORST MISTAKE EVER! She teaches like this is a master's degree in plant physiology. The lectures are insane and exams are AWFUL! TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
This professor is a perfect example of what I would never do if I were in charge of teaching Earths youth about plants. The lectures are exhausting, monotone, and full of detailed information that never appears on the test. Reviews are 8 pages of open-ended questions, single-spaced. First test average was a 45% and she blamed the class. Nightmare.
Dr. Cruz is condescending and very rude as well as an unreasonable grader. She's made me feel very little many times and the only professor that has ever made me feel bad about asking questions or having the wrong answer. Her tests are abhorrently difficult and take hours to complete. She seems to pride herself on her rate of failing students.
Dr. Cruz is a fine, intelligent professor that comes off in an difficult way but she truly is a gem if you are present in class and show her youre trying, but this does not mean youll pass. Can you get an A? Yes. Is it likely? No. Go into this expecting a C if you work beyond any limits you can imagine. Above I have a summary of what to expect.
Keep SPECIFIC notes during labs. You will need to extrapolate in reports. Intro (summary), Results, Discussion. Get started early because she gives as little as a week to write up full reports of 5 labs. She doesnt post grades, you have to ask. If anything at all is unclear make her make it clear. The exam will ask about it.
I never wrote one of these so you can expect my honest review. She will help but in a rude way. Her Labs are ambiguous and has no clear outline. ON the first day of class she let us know we wont do well, Only 1 student got a A. Unless you can remember everything she says in class ,The book and think IN HER HEAD you def will pass. Please AVOID
Beyond one of the worst professors I have ever had and the ratings you see are accurate. She is not nice and cares more about you wearing a mask than actually learning. The tests were worded in ways you cant even remotely connect to what youve learned. She was rude and thought she was funny. Dont do a presentation cause she will pick u apart
She makes this class way harder than it should be. Lectures fast, everything in the course just seems jammed, nothing is clear. Be prepared to teach yourself a lot. She means well but she just expects all students to perform the same. Also, she said having covid is not an excuse to miss any assignments. If you can avoid taking her, AVOID IT!!!!
This is the hardest 3 credit course that I've ever taken. I am usually up for a challenge but this lady makes it hard. I do not feel she truly cares about her student's passing unless they are interested in botany. The amount of information she expects you tknow for the exams is just a no. The university could truly do without her teaching this.
She is very smart. She should be teaching at a much higher level.
Dr. Alvarez truly does care about her students, but her teaching method is very outdated. She will lecture for the duration of the class, and them being usually rigorous classes, will leave you mentally drained by the end of two hours. The exams, while fair, are very difficult to achieve max points on due to her being very specific on her grading.
This class is hard because genetics is ridiculously complex. If you're a pre med hoping to get into med school or want to continue in academics for a PhD, than this class is for will and will prepare you with everything you need to know about genetics. If you want that easy A, or just trying to get that biology minor, then take someone else.
Very intelligent person, but she is horribly strict and the tests are awful
This class was the hardest class i have ever taken in my 4 years. The test averages was a 50-60%, we ended the semester with 10 people in total, and there was quite a bit of homework. She puts nothing in canvas so you have no idea how you are doing until its to late and she grades everything like you should know genetics already. Avoid this class.
I have never had anything less than a B before in college. I completely agree with the other reviews that say she is extremely intelligent and should be teaching at a higher level. The exams are about 3-4 hours and never curved even though the average was always below 65%. Anyone that did get an A was taking it their second or third time.
Marilyn Cruz-Alvarez is, without a doubt, the worst professor I have ever had at Florida Gulf Coast University. Her classes consist of mainly lectures, and her monotone voice makes it difficult to follow along and absorb the material effectively. Her grading is incredibly difficult, as she is fi
Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Professor Cruz-Alvarez is, without a doubt, the worst professor I've ever had at FGCU. Little discussion outside of lectures and impossible requirements for short response questions on exams. Doesn't upload grades on canvas, which makes it difficult to determine what your grade actually is.
Be ready to teach yourself everything. Stuff never discussed in lecture will be pulled from online homework and put on exams. Only a handful of people were passing the class and they had all already taken it once. You also do not know your grade the entire time because she doesn't put anything in canvas or respond to emails asking about it.
NEVER. TAKE. THIS. PROFESSOR. She literally never uploads grades so we don't know what we have in the class?? I've taken the matter to other staff members before and they hadn't done anything about it. Save yourself and take literally anything else
Professor Cruz seems to pride herself on her students failing and will be shocked when the class average is a 50% but does not do anything to change. Half of her exams are not materials she's covered and her Homeworks are tedious as they are long. Her lectures are very long and very rarely is there a break. Avoid her at all costs!!
This class was one of the hardest classes I've taken, but, it is possible to do well. Prof. Cruz's lectures are long but informational and her homework is the same. If you focus in class, ask questions, work hard on the homework, and follow her explanations, you will have everything needed to do well. She cares a lot about those who show they care.
Assigns an insane amount of homework, set in her ways, not supportive of struggling students
Avoid at all costs if possible. Choose any other professor teaching Genetics if you can. Lecture HEAVY with test questions never taught or mentioned. Genetics is hard and you need to study, but she makes it extremely difficult & never uploads grades or due dates. She can be condescending when you ask for help during class or in office hours.
First class I have withdrawn from and for good reason. Unclear about what is expected so the short response questions for the tests are pretty difficult (50% of the exam grade). Exam 1 had a 50% average and nobody received an A. Almost a month behind on lectures, this was before the hurricane even cancelled classes. 350 characters is not enough
If you take this professor, get ready to have a bad time.
Worst Professor ive taken at FGCU. Had an average of a 50 on the first test no one got an A and nothing was done to help students. Lab expectations are not clear. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. First class Ive ever struggled in and had to withdraw. She does not care if you pass.
By far the worst professor Ive ever taken. Does not care about you or your grade. Average on the first exam was a 50 and no one got an A and nothing was done. Super unclear lab instructions. Avoid her at all costs she is super unreasonable. Listen to the other reviews and take someone else.
I created an account just to leave this review. I have taken A LOT of college courses, many of them upper level sciences. This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. Her lectures are unbelievably monotone and boring, breadth and depth of information would be suitable for a PhD program. Tests extremely difficult. Do not take
Normally I don't leave reviews but something needs to be said. There's a reason why her classes are the only ones available with seats. She hand writes her exams and looks for specific answers however doesn't tell you what the answer is. She doesn't grade on time so prepare to have a zero until the end of the semester. Worst teacher ever
Do not take her. Listen to the reviews. She has an outdated teaching style that needs to be retired. Extremely condescending to students
Dr Cruz is a impressive teacher in my opinion, she explains the material instead of reading off the slide. I would advise participating in the lecture when she asks questions, she doesn't berate you for being wrong, plus do the homework. Overall class is heavy, and requires time, not a class to get an A without showing up everyday
If you can, take a different professor. I know of multiple people including myself who had to withdrawal from her class. The summer course for this class that I'm taking with a different professor has less of a weekly workload than Cruz-Alvarez's normal semester class. It was too much and the tests are incredibly difficult with no curve.
