She is a very good teacher. She loves what she teaches. Tests are a bit hard, just becuase they are tricky...If you want to do well on essay, hand it in before its due to fix it up for the final. You'll do very good then!

Best prof in all of the psy department, she is really fair, she marks the essays properly and doesnt take marks off for useless reason. Her tests are based a lot on the text book, so if u want a good mark READ IT.

Anyone who finds Marilyn "mean" must have something SERIOUSLY wrong with them. I suggest more psych courses for those people. Marilyn is lively, enthusiastic and brilliant.

Gives off the impression of being unapproachable, but if you speak to her she's really nice. Always willing to clarify and answer questions if you approach her after class. Nice Prof.

I think it is a shame that this prof. is being personally attacked on the basis of course content that is not popular. While I am not fond of the content myself, the prof. herself is terrific. When content seems easy, it is likely being taught well.

Awesome!! Funny, energetic, interesting! I loved this course! I would take another one of her courses if I could! One of the few profs that actually makes you WANT to go to her class! I learned a lot. Her marking and the course load are both reasonable. Very nice woman and a good teacher!

One of the nicest, funniest profs @ Ryerson. She cares and is very understanding unlike other profs who dont want excuses. I read the course outline & thought the course wouldn't suit me (i.e. meditation & yoga), but i learned a lot & it was interesting! She makes u want to come to class!

Marilyn is a great prof. Very helpful- and always takes time to answer questions. She'll never go over time, and her lectures are really clear. Just follow her study instructions and you'll get an A. Her enthusiasm also helps make the class interesting early in the morning. Basically, tells you like it is without a lot of psychobabble.

could there be a better prof? this was my fav class of the semester. she is so smart and perceptive. she is there for us the students. the way she teaches helps you remember and enjoy the stuff you learn. thank you for being so wonderful and i hope to be in another class of yours again!!!!

an amazing prof, a wonderful human being she is. This class should be mandatory for those dealing with death (nursing etc). overall, best psych prof i had, respectful, understanding, treates everyone as equals. I work in health care and used the material to help a few patients with suicide. exam every week which was great. highly recommed this clas

She's definately quirky, but overall a fun professor who tries to engage the class as much as possible. Keep a page for quotes that are fun to look back on. For example: "Sometimes you feel so depressed you just want someone to stab you, put your body in a box, and throw it under the Gardner Expressway." Hilarious.

Marilyn is never boring & always relates the material to interesting stories, events, etc. She seems enthusiastic when she teaches but she also seems fake. Most of the test material comes from the textbook & you need to study the details. She also thinks that she's very progressive but a lot of things she says are not & are in fact, insensitive.

Excellent professor. Very friendly and respectful to her students. Tests and exam are easy if you study and the one essay mean that course load is not too demanding compared to my business courses. Take psychology courses with her if you can as she can make any topic interesting (even things like yoga, which I had no prior interest at all). A++

This lady is very sweet. Her lectures are interesting but her tests can be hard. In terms of MC, q's can be confusing and detailed. T.A's can tend to mark the short answers hard. Just do ur readings and attend her lectures and you should be OK.

I LOVE HER TO PIECES! She is an absolute delight as a professor and is such a pleasant person to talk to. Very intriguing, brings personal experience into her lessons. The book is a bit of a repetition of what she says in class. Be sure to type your notes! Her Word.docs are very simple and lack a lot info - thats why you must go to class!

I honestly don't know what the previous posts are talking about. She is not a good professor. Her assignment are unreasonable, and her lectures are useless, and the textbook is odd because it's both to detailed and doesn't have enough detail. If you have the choice DO NOT take this class.

Great prof. Study text book more than lectures, although some lecture material is important. I made the mistake of focusing more on lectures for mid-term and I got B-. But for the final I studied from the text and got A. Very passionate abt material. HATES when late students disrupt class. Reflections are easy. Unclear instructions for assignment.

One of the most insightful professors around. She uses her body of knowledge and experience to make the dry contents engaging and interesting. Death is a tough subject to tackle and i think she did with grace and compassion. it takes a wise professor to not get up in front of a lecture full of people and recite to them why shes so smart.

This professor is passionately interested in her material and that enthusiasm is transferred to her students. Two of her pet peeves are students that arrive late & students who record her lectures instead of attending them. Good sense of humour. Would take another course with her.

Very friendly, knowledgable and approachable professor who does genuinely care for students. The course material seems fairly straightforward, as do the tests, but this is one of the few courses that I thought went better than it actually did. You must REALLY know the material and be prepared to write short answers about it.

Prof wrote the textbook and every tiny detail in the book is testable. The essay you have to write seems easy but then most people did not do that well. You think the class will be easy but it is really not. The prof also tries to embarrass anyone who comes in late. If you take the course, don't bother going to class just read the text.

Awesome prof! Very interesting lectures and practical content. You must attend for in-class notes which will be tested. Her textbook is easy and enjoyable to read. Very fair evaluations (Two MC tests). In the essay, you basically write about yourself and how you apply positive psychology concepts in your life. This is by far my favorite elective!

She is a nice lady and is pretty funny. Lectures are useless though, as about 90% of her exam questions are from the textbook - which is extremely boring to read. The essay instructions were very vague, and TA did not mark them fairly... not helpful when you ask questions about the assignment either. The exam was also unreasonably detailed.

VERY two faced. First I was excited cuz she was so enthusiastic and passionate, BUT when I approached her for a simple yes/no question, she was EXTREMELYYY hostile. Widened her eyes and said "uh so what's your point? Is that it?" You dont know how horrible I felt after.. 0 guidance for assignments, not surprising if class fails (proposal). NOT jkin

I completely agree with the comment below about her being two-faced. During lectures she's fun, but when I arrived late to class on an assignment due date and explained I was not aware papers had already been collected, she refused to take it at first. She told me she should fail me right there on the spot and yelled at me in front of others.

She is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable professor, very good lecturer. But, you must read the textbook in order to pass her tests/exams as 80% are from the texts. I found her assignment unclear and confusing with lack of guidance and communication. The midterm was a bit hard, but final exam was very easy. Overall, she is a fair professor.
