Second time with this professor; took both SOC 101 and current class. Excellent, friendly, funny, and fair. Allows argument with proof of all test scores. Dr. Howell and her Starbucks coffee... you can't do better!
Prof. Howell is very well versed in Sociology and criminology. She lectures well (kinda fast) and allows for a GREAT deal of student input in all aspects of class (discussions, test, papers). Would reccomend very highly.
howell makes it interesting. friendly when you're on the same terms as her. she's smart/strict, insightful and very objective.
Awesome!!!!!!!
well-versed, very knowledgeable. don't say anything u're not prepared to back up w/ an explanation or at least be prepared for objective criticism. for this class, read the text, attend the lectures, take good notes!!
Wonderful teacher. Her tests are pretty easy as long as you use the study questions and take the pre-quizes off the internet.
A teacher who lectures a lot. Take notes and read your text and you'll be fine. The hardest part of class was the research for the stratification assignment and the EC quizes. Each test was pretty easy as long as I read my text and studied a little.
She's an incredibly nice person. She knows what she's teaching. Grading is a bit meh, 2 papers and 3 tests make up your grade and they're HARD. Take a LOT of notes too.

I really disliked this class.I hated having to sit in her lectures knowing all she wanted to do was to hear herself talk.I was afraid to answer any of the questions in her class, because of the look of discust aftwards if I got it wrong. Memorize the book word for word.I don't think she likes teaching. Her motto "I am right and don't question me."
Marilyn had very useful information to bring to class, I liked the sociology info. It was just crammed too much in 8 weeks! ah!

okay, the thing is that she wanted you to memorize the text, and when she asked questions you were wrong no matter what. I agree with the other guy who rated her low, she really does think that she's the only 'correct' opinion in the class, even if you read the text back to her verbatum!
Prof. Howell expects her students to make sense and to back up statements with valid references/ resources (or at least to recognize the difference between opinions and research findings). Be prepared to cite sources (as she is) if you differ with her. She practices what she preaches.
I think she likes her field, and is knowledgeable about it. However, I do think she is rigid in her thinking, especially for a social science teacher. She is ALWAYS RIGHT, and if you disagree with her opinion, look out. If you are extremely liberal and believe that the world is out to get you, you'll get along great with her.
Expect lecture only. Difficult teacher, boring. Other classmates and I almost jumped for joy after getting out of class. Drink coffee. 4 tests (1st 2 are okay, 2nd 2 are HARD). 2 Papers (1st is easy, 2nd very difficult). Tests are based on text and lecture, COME TO CLASS, TAKE NOTES, STUDY. Gives extra cred quiz at beg of class. class is doable
If you have *any* interest in this subject, PLEASE TAKE THIS CLASS! You will learn SO much about partner abuse. She combines lecture with lots of videos, group discussions, you write a confidential journal and a couple of papers. Several really good guest speakers from local agencies, including police, survivor services, etc. BEST CLASS AT CLARK!
dreaded this class every day...gives nasty pop quizzes every day and makes you feel like an idiot if you answer incorrectly. VERY liberal and i agree, she thinks the world is out to get her and you. ENJOY.
Dr. Howell, as she likes to be called, is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is very forward and you know what she expects of you and your work. She does a great job with study guides for tests, so you can focus on what to study. She is also quite entertaining because she doesn't let people be ignorant, she pushes you to do your best.
She often made people afraid to say what they were feeling. Also just becasue we didn't take her soc 101 class does not mean we are not "good enough". The class was about DV let's talk about that social problem and not the "doc's degree".
what a terrible class. She mad you feel like you were an idiot. She was impossible to deal with. never take her for anything!!!!!
The first day of class I walked into an english class instead of her class on accident and stayed there for 15 min. before realising it wasn't SOC 101. I now feel that I should've stayed in the English class. Totally self important, and unclear. Her tests suck, and the writing assignments are impossibly vague. AVOID AT ALL COSTS...
I like her teaching style. She is not patient with BS or with rudeness or immature behavior in her class. She is very fair, allows you to challenge any points missed on tests with evidence, gives ex credit if you do the reading. There are 2 papers. They both make you think a lot (I wished they could be worth more points tho). Learned a lot.
I took both 101 and Dom. Viol. from Marilyn. She's a great teacher. Enthusiastic, serious about teaching, knows her material, and espec.noticeable with Dom Viol which is a difficult topic, she's extremely helpful to students. If you want to learn, I recommend her classes to anyone! I'm an older student (in my 30s) and I think she's awesome.
I am so glad that I did not listen to the board. I was afraid to take her class at first (soc) and found her to be very interesting. I loved the class so much I took the DV class too. Very reasonable and fair. Don't cry and complain about having to do the readings, you are in college!! Dr. Howell does a great job. Thank you Dr. Howell.
she was the worst possible teacher ever. She would ask a question and when you give a response that everyone else agrees with she would give that idiotic, patronising look and give an impression of, "oh, look at da wee little pee-brain trying to strain his two brain cells enough to come up with a response". Down with Howell...
I think that her class was very good. I took this class from another instructor and dropped it because it was boring and I got tired of hearing about smoking weed. You wont have that here she is straight forward and easy to understand, the reading is easy. The pop quizes are extra credit over stuff that she's covered or you read!!
Don't listen to others on this board that whine that she's mean and makes you feel stupid. Dr. Howell is excellent, involves the class in her lectures, and if you back up what you're saying, she'll indulge your opinion. She doesn't accept mindless comments from lazy students. She treats students like adults WHO ARE IN COLLEGE. Do your homework!
OMGosh she's horrible. Don't take this class. She's rude, LIBERAL LIBERAL LIBERAL, includes her opinion in everything. The subject matter was boring (she could have made it interesting!). Very blunt. If you raise your hand, be prepared to answer the question. Definately do your homework. The exams are ruthless. STUDY!!!
In my 3 years at Clark, SOC 101 taught by Dr. Howell has been one of the most informative and interesting. She brings current events into the class and connects them to class material, gives extra credit for doing the required reading, and she knows a lot about a variety of topics. Very good class with a very good teacher.
Domestic violence class. Dr. howell knows her stuff. should be required for everybody. you will learn SO much. there were 5 guys in this class too, I recommend that guys take it. it's not bashing, but it's def intense ...lots of reading, lots of lecture and discussion.. one of the most useful classes i've ever taken at Clark.
I was one of the 5 guys in the Domestic Violence class. I found it very informative and well presented. YOU MUST HAVE THICK SKIN if you're a guy, but the education is well worth it. Dr. Howell does not sugar coat anything. There were many times that Dr. Howell and I disagreed in class, but I came to respect her and her opinions.
Learned a lot more than I expected. Thank you Dr. Howell
Her classes are challenging, not gonna lie: key to success is to FOCUS, and you'll get by. Haha. Have taken 2 of her classes. She's very serious teacher.I disagree with the negative comments. You need to ask her questions, she'll answer! Read ahead, focus, study, take class serious, you'll do OK.
Great Prof! If you go to class and want to learn, then she is your prof. Very interesting material. She may seem abrasive, but she has high expectaions for her students. I strongly disagree with any negative statements, all she expects is for her students to come prepared for class!!
Stay clear of this class if you are male. Every week she talks about abuse, and is sure to remind you that she teaches a domestic violence class. Her soc 101 should be called man hating 101 with an emphasis on domestic violence. You are offered EC by way of questions. If your male and answer wrong too bad, but a female she will help answer.
There sure are a lot of whiners on this board. Dr. Howell has high standards of her students. She's fairly tough but very clear on her expectations. She gives EC for doing the required reading, for pete's sake! How hard is that? If you miss more than 2-3 classes you'll probably not do very well. I think she's a good teacher and I've learned a lot.
Well I'm a male and I have't noticed any anti-male bias from her. Sure, she talks about d.v.-she also talks about poverty, deviance, scientific method and a lot of other stuff too. You do need to attend class to do well. She's very clear about what she expects and she does give EC for reading and sometimes for other stuff. I have enjoyed her class.
I love Dr. Howell! She is such a sweet lady and makes class very interesting and fun. She does love to lecture, but lets the students ask questions throughout the lecture. She gives extra credit for reading the text. As long as you do the required reading and come to class, the tests are fairly easy. Very helpful and sweet teacher.
Wait - a college student (below me) who can't spell "ridiculous" is complaining cuz a professor supposedly treated them "like a retard"? That's funny. Dr. Howell is clear and thoughtful, she'll tell you exactly what to expect, this class was beneficial and diverse. Avoid her if you are a slacker, you'll learn a lot if you are reasonably serious.
I was not very excited about having to take Sociology but it was actually very interesting. Clearly defines the expectations, gives study guides for tests, do the recommended studying you will do well. Opportunities for extra credit. Lectures are well delivered, easy to understand if you pay attention. Would highly recommend her to anyone.
This is a very boring class. Could be interesting if taken with a different instructor. This teacher is clearly on a power trip and making students look stupid is her specialty! I have never hated attending a class so much as this one. I do not recommend her as a teacher. Horrible!
Well all I have to say is this class revolves around her own way of thinking and if you try and defy her assumptions and opinions she makes you feel as if you are incompetent. However group work and having a little time away from her constant lecturing made the class somewhat enjoyable...
I did not like this class at all. The material wasn't so bad but Dr. Howell just doesn't know how to make a class interesting. She has no enthusiasm about what she is teaching which made it hard for me to stay focused and interested. If you take sociology don't take her!
It's hard to believe some of these complainers were in the same class as mine.Yes, she's tough on "talkers" who insist on whispering during class, which I appreciate since I sat right in front of some of them and it's hard to hear. She brings current events into class and helps you see their relevance. An interesting class and a very good teacher.
This class is hard but worth it! But Dr. Howell does warn us that it will be tough. Loads of theories discussed in detail. Research methods also covered. She knows her stuff. Pay close attention and take good notes. Don't miss many classes or you will fall behind. Good material to learn, just don't slack off.
She was by far the worst professor I have ever had. Unless you like lectures, note taking, and reading chapters out of the book, dont take this class. She does a great job of listening to what you say, then making you sound dumb and repeating the same thing to try to make herself sound smart. 4 tests and a few papers make up the grade for the term
I liked her a lot. Yes, she expects people to come to class and to do the work - but that's the point of college, isn't it? You won't sail through this class, you have to work, but in return you will learn a lot of material that is applicable and helpful for many other classes and life in general.
Dr. Howell is an engaging instructor who helped me tune in to current events and look at my life with new eyes. She isn't easy, but she's fair and upfront with her expectations. I found her teaching style and her support inspiring, and she has written me letters of recommendation to help with my future studies too. Thank you Dr. Howell.
Class is emotionally intense but very comprehensive. Everyone should learn about domestic violence including men!! Take this class if you will work with people in any capacity. Lots of reading, lecture, discussion and interesting guest speakers. Very useful.
This class had very interesting content. She is not the nicest teacher. She asks questions and if you happen to start off explaining the answer wrong then she will stop you in your tracks and call you WRONG! She is very judgemental and if you are a guy she already has an opinion towards you because she teaches a domestic violence class.
The worst teacher ever!!! Says one thing, does another. Big time feminist. Do NOT take her, you will regret it later, don't say I didn't warn you...
BY FAR THE WORST TEACHER I'VE EVER EVERRR HAD AT CLARK. IS TRICKY AND UNCLEAR WITH TESTS. HARD TO KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT AND MUCH HARDER TO EVEN UNDERSTAND WHAT SHE'S TRYING TO TEACH. All of the other students with different SOC teachers loved them. Everyone in our class HATED it. Confusing 2 and half hour lectures. No real point? Wastes time
by far, the worst professor i have ever had. offensive, judgemental, she's a big time feminist. her tests are alright. i took her course over the summer so i had enough time to read the book cover to cover twice. not kidding, that's what it took to get an A in her class. avoid this professor if you can...she's terrible.
This teacher does not want you to succeed, period. I've been going to Clark College for almost two years, and have never experienced such a disheartening teacher. She is very hostile, and not interested in your cares or concerns towards course work. Be prepared to read your entire sociology book multiple times. Wish I could fit more words in this..
I don't get all the criticism of Dr. Howell on here. Yeah, she will stop you if you start to answer a question wrong (maybe you could start over and try again?). And she really doesn't tolerate B.S. So what if you have to read the book 2X or more? I know she cares about students, I met with her 3 times in office and she cares. It's college not H.S!
Gee imagine that, a teacher who actually answers student questions during lecture. mostly bogus criticisms here probably from students who dont even attend classes but expect A's. Howell isn't a push=over, she pretty much demands you pay attention and read the book, shes nobodys mommy=teacher, but fair minded, high expectations and smart.
Professor Howell is an amazing instructor, don't expect to get an easy A though. I took her during the summer, it was a short 5 week class, but I learned a lot. She lectures A LOT. But if you take notes and study for the test you'll do fine. You have to read the book as well.
Knows how to teach, but do not expect to float through the class without doing anything. She expects you to know the stuff.
Howell has a tendency to be a little long-winded, but that is the only bad thing I can say. No homework, only a couple papers and some tests and if you read the chapters, you will do fine. This is college, not high school and your professors are not going to baby you anymore. They will give brutally honest feedback. That's college, get use to it
Stay away from this teacher if you are an outgoing student. This teacher is abrasive and confusing. If you are a good student who likes developing strong relationships with your teachers, pick a different teacher.
I didn't expect to like this class (only 2X/week, long hours ect) but I actually learned a lot. She's very direct, doesn't baby the student. Read your text before class or you'll regret it.
Having a three hour long lecture in a small box of a classroom was about the only bad experience for me. Some classes were interesting but for the most part she was quite boring and tiring. Very serious attitude and gets to the point. Tests were HARD. 50 multiple choice questions. READ THE BOOK OR U WILL NOT PASS.
Howell reminds me sometimes of Judge Judy on that tv show. She was very clear in her expectations, I agree she is very serious too, doesn't like joking around. Go to class and read the text and listen, don't be rude, you will do ok.
One word.. TEXTBOOK and that is the just of this class. She absolutely loves hearing herself talk. I have been going to college for 2 years now and by far the most boring class in the world. The tests are not to bad, but if you have a hard time reading 90 pages of a textbook and than remember tiny details for the test you will not do too well.
Hard ass but knows her stuff. She's good at making students feel stupid and repeating the same thing over and over but merely changing the wording. Not a bad teacher but not my favorite. I would take another one of her classes just because she knows her subject and that alone is refreshing. There are too many teachers who seem to have no clue.
So far she seems like a great teacher. She covers about everything on tests during her lectures, and even passes out a study guide before tests. The papers are a walk in the park, and much less demanding than other classes. Although she will shoot students down sometimes for their inability to read a teleprompter (my class will get the joke xD)
If you value your time dont take this class. Probably the most boring teacher i have ever had. She goes on and on forever about nothing that has to do with sociology. For sure biased on her opinions. Can teach the right stuff if you have the stamina to listen
I can't believe the faculty have allowed her to continue teaching. She's long winded about world news and completely unrelated nonsense. Constantly disses men and makes students feel like idiots. She hardly ever covers any material that will be on the test. Her tests impossible and about tiny details no one can remember Avoid her class AT ALL COSTS
There's a good reason the majority of her ratings are bad - don't ignore all the comments below - they are SOO true. I unfortunately ignored them and took her SOC 100 and am now majorly regretting it. Listen to those who have gone before you and suffered, DON'T TAKE HER CLASS.
Yeah, she is not your regular easy going instructor, she wants you to know your stuff. I took Sociology with her, and learned a lot, ended up taking criminology with her too. Her tests require in-depth thinking. Over all, I liked her.
I wish I would have listened to people that warned me about her. Take with Castro.
This class was fun! Yes, it's hard. She does talk about current events (and why shouldn't she? it's relevant). Tests are OK if you study. Nobody should take this class if you are not going to spend time studying. I liked it, and I liked her.
I'm a student at WSUV now and I took 2 of her classes ... 101 and DV. I feel that her teaching style and coursework prepared me well for "real college" and I learned a lot. If you are a slacker you probably won't do well tho. I attended every single class session, took good notes, read text twice, got an A- in 101 and an A in DV.Had to work for it!
WASTE OF TIME. DONT TAKE WITH HER! Take soc 101 with someone else. Barely ever covered any material on the test. The study guide is useless. After listening to her all day the only thing I could think of for sociologists theories was domestic violence...(because that is all she talked about, and her new cat.)
Droll. That's the best way to describe this professor. Got the impression she does not like men & kept discussing things from her other class on domestic violence. The class is not hard if you show up and do the reading but I would rather cut my own arm off than sit through that again. Do not recommend this professor.
I studied the textbook and worked very hard on this class, but I got nothing from her lecture and I got a poor grade. It just made me feel so frustrated.. I like Sociology, but she made me feel I'm stupid. Do not take her class if possible.
Awful teacher, leaves a lot to be desired. Isn't clear about much of anything she lectures on. And her cats are not that interesting.... sigh.
She uses a lecture format with 4 tests and 2 papers. There is not a comprehensive final. If you show up every day, take notes on the in class videos, and write down everything she puts on the board, it is cake. Read each chapter twice! If you're taking a social science major, she's a must have teacher
Instructor Howell has a habit of asking questions and then if you get the answer wrong, or if you are not 100% right she says "WRONG!" and moves on. She generally only accepts answers that are 100% correct. She has a habit of jumping from example to example w/no real solid thought. It was extremely difficult to follow much of the content! DONT TAKE
Rude, disrespectful, and demeaning! She contradicts the book a few different times and when asked for clarification goes off on an ADD quest... Great class... would be better with a different instructor!
If you can find ANY other teacher for SOC, take them and do not waste your time. Frankly if you can buy the book and know how to read, you will enjoy SOC101 more than Howell. She is one of the rudest, least helpful, vague, and most agenda driven professors I have ever had. She took an interesting subject and ruined it with her attitude.
This class is extremely boring. I have attended Clark for four years and I have NEVER wanted to miss a class more than I wanted to miss hers. She lectures, and lectures, and lectures.. You are constantly taking notes. When she gives you a definition of a term she then rewords the definiton =she just gave you. Play close attention to definitions.
Read the text, remember the vocabulary, and take a lot of notes. Don't be afraid to clarify if you don't understand the material and use her email address! She's a good teacher if you know what questions to ask when you don't understand the material.
Very knowledgeable about her subject and very fair grading.
She is a pretty good teacher but sometimes the class feels a little bit long and boring. You have to try hard to get an A. The only homework was two papers and a lot of studying and reading.
The material was interesting but she just made it uninteresting. the class was boring and i had trouble staying awake. monotone. not much homework. just reading. dont really need to attend the class. the book and study guides tell it all.
Interesting class. She's very knowledgeable and clear. She does sometimes repeat definitions but that's for those who are slow taking notes I guess. you MUST take notes and pay attention or you will get lost - same for any class with new information. Very good instructor if you major in sociology, psychology ect. good prep class for B.A. degree.
very knowledgeable. very monotone...i had an interest going into soc, but no longer do. although class is not neccessary I would make sure to attend, know your stuff before answering a question, if you dont she will be making you guess at it and make you feel kinda dumb about it. parts of her test questions come out of nowhere.
Lectures for hours. Monotone. I only managed to stay awake because a good friend of mine took the class with me. Two and a half hour lectures in a stuffy room were the norm. Unclear, and goes off on tangents easily. Do not take her if you do not like lectures, or if you actually want to learn something.
Took Howell for SOC 101 and just took her again for Domestic Violence. Howell knows her stuff and as long as you follow her very clear directions, you will do just fine. This is a very emotionally intense class though so I highly recommend some yoga or something like that immediately following class.
Introduction to Sociology should be just that;an intro.Howell made it vertually impossible to learn. She was rude & demeaning. If you didn't know the answer then she made you feel stupid. She was hard to follow and her tests made no sense. Not a good professor, find another one.Stay away from her class, you won't enjoy it.
such a horrible teacher. uses the most monotone voice. puts you right to sleep (and im a good student)! socioloy is interesting but she makes is so BORING. listen to the rest of these people... dont take soc with her! you'll regret it.
Mega power-trip! You could quote her exact words in answer to her questions and it would still be wrong. Never clearly asks or answers any question. Very anti-male, I feel bad for the few guys in our class. Material is interesting, just needs to be taught better.
Read the textbook chapters or you will NOT pass the class. Pay attention to her lectures, they may be a bit boring, but she knows her stuff well and is very thorough. Every time at the beginning of class we always discuss current events and that is always relevant. Just read the textbook, pretty much memorize it, and you should be fine.
Love Dr. Howell in both Crim and DV. Read X2 & notes. Never saw bias towards men. Her office door is always open,as is her mind.Great speakers. Tests can be hard.Want to learn? She's the one. She helps you think through your answers in class. Great study guides. Very fair. Great sense of humor. Work hard, no BS & you will succeed.
Ms. Howell was a horrible professor. She has a very closed mind and she is always right. She made many people feel bad in front of the class. Her tests are very hard but she does not grade on attentence. She stands in front of the class for 2 hours and talks in a monotone voice. Do not recommend her at all.
I had Dr. Howell for both Soc 101 and Soc 240 (Criminology). I learned more from her classes than any classes I have had in the past year. She is a strict teacher, you won't always agree with her but what you take away you will use constantly!
A pretty boring teacher, and her class is fairly difficult. I really enjoy social sciences, but was unable to have fun in her class.
Had this professor for Soc and criminology. You have to be good at taking quick notes in class as well as have time for the large amount of reading. You may not like the class, but you WILL learn. She makes the students think through their answers by questioning them, preventing "those students" from making random (and often ridiculous) comments.
She was very difficult to talk to in class, she interupted constantly while belittling you. I would not recommend her unless you need either Crimonology or Sociology.
Great person, not a great teacher. Nit-picky and difficult. She likes to talk (babble) about things that are not necessarily important for understanding the topic. Asks questions on tests that have never been covered in the text or by herself. Not a good lecture class, I don't suggest it.
Likes to debate semantics and nit-pick at details for such a theoretical subject. Pushy, but does a decent job. I personally didn't feel enriched in her class, but she's obviously very well learned. She just does not take the greatest approach to this subject. Very easy if you're willing to read 60+ pages/week.
I can tell that she is very well educated, however that does not mean she can teach well. She makes things rather difficult then they should be. I wish I took this class with another Prof. I studied a lot & still did bad on her tests. Her tests are just ridiculous! She also makes you feel stupid for giving her wrong answers.
I get A's in all my classes and study like crazy i never missed a day in class and i still couldnt pull off more then a C in the class. Her tests are all multiple choice but are phrased weird. Her lectures are boring and she will call you out and argue even if she is wrong.I DO NOT suggest taking this class with this teacher.
Pretty much made sociology miserable for me. Im definitely retaking with a GOOD professor. Her teaching style is 100 years old. lonnnng boring lectures. Multiple choice answers on tests all make sense, but you have to choose the BEST answer. Each option is a whole paragraph...
I had her for Sociology of Domestic Violence and learned A TON. Most of these reviews don't sound accurate to me. She does teach through lectures, which some people may find boring if they aren't interested in the topic. She is detail-oriented and knowledgeable. Doesn't "belittle" students for asking questions.
I thought the class was very informative. You need to keep up on the material, and read the assigned chapters. If you don’t understand something, you need to ask her. She is more than willing to explain things, but YOU need to ask.
First week she asked us a question about the subject during lecture and followed it with "Someone answer so I can tell you you're wrong". Belittling was common. Tests are typically easy if you can get past oddly phrased "most right answer" questions. Didn't open my book more than once and managed a B.
Could certainly be described as a tough teacher, but I did learn a lot! Sociology was a bit of a struggle but her Domestic Violence class was fantastic!
This is by far the worst teacher I've ever had while attending Clark. Although, she is extremely knowledgeable in her field & highly intelligent, she is an absolutely horrid teacher. No matter what you say(even if it's her own words)you are wrong. There is no class discussion, just her talking. You are required to regurgitate her opinions ONLY.
Such bad hype on here! She's tough, yeah, and doesn't like b.s. filler answers. If you've got good study habits and can understand the relevance between lectures & study material, you should be fine.
DO NOT TAKE THIS INSTRUCTOR! Her assignments are very frustrating. You only get a short amount of time, and she isn't clear in what she wants (or she gives you a LOT of instructions which makes the papers confusing). She is condescending. Her exams are the confusing as well. IMO she is an extreme feminist. Take her course at your own risk.....
Very hard teacher and rude at times. She wants you to have the comprehension of a Dr. and if you don't well, you will probably fail or just get by. I am an A/B student and got a C. Very tough teacher.Worst I have had at Clark.
Her teaching style is antiquated. With classes so large, it's impractical to write info on the board. It needs to be up on the screen! Her tests are multiple choice but each question is a sm paragraph. The study guide has essay-type questions. Very confusing & hard to study. I wanted to study sociology, but she's turned me off that idea.
She is the worst professor I have ever had! She is a 10 year prof. that is just horrible. Grade is based off 4 tests & 2 papers That's it! Classes all discussion based and get majorly off track. The study guides have nothing to do with the test questions. She frequently contradicts the text book, making everything confusing! Very rude and impolite
She's a nice lady, but tends to talk over you while you are either making a comment or asking a question. I liked learning about Domestic Violence, but I kind of felt like the class was repetitive. I guess attendance didn't count until the last few weeks...
Despite what many people say, I think she is a great teacher. It is a pretty straight forward class and the information is interesting. It is all lecture with a few video clips here and there, but if you pay attention, and keep your hand down, all is well!
Dr. Howell is very invested in being the smartest person in the room. She does not like to give out A's. Her final two tests are the worst. I had a A in the class until the final test where she asks a ton of trick questions that have nothing to do with text or lecture. She's very rude and condescending. I would not take another class from her.
She spent an hour and a half reading her syllabus, word for word...for word..as if we weren't capable of reading it on our own. Her teaching style is boring to tears. Her expectations are not realistic. I DO NOT recommend her for any class. Her grading structure and quizzes are bizarre and she is not pleasant to try to talk to. she belittles you.
worse teacher i have had at clark. class is all lecture and nothing hands on. she is boring, uninteresting. don't take this class, she shouldn't be a teacher.FIND ANOTHER TEACHER
Worst professor I have had at any college. Though she is an intelligent lady, her teaching style leaves a lot to be desired. She lectures for hours and her definitions differ greatly from what is written in the required text. Class always become off topic with various "discussions" where the only right opinion is hers. Take a different SOC101 class
BEWARE!! She expects far too much for an intro class, and is an awful instructor!
Pick another instructor. The other reviews are completely accurate about this lady. You will spend your entire term attempting to decode her scandalous teaching style. Her class is ridiculous.
Worst teacher EVER!!! Best advice get a different professor. You will NEVER be right on any question asked in class. She makes you feel completely stupid. Her study guides dont even help for the tests, so dont waste your time filling it out.
Professor Howell is very difficult to comprehend, she expects way to much out of her students for an Intro class. Her tests are extremely DIFFICULT to follow and the study guides definitely DON'T help, so don't waste your time filling them out. Best advice I could EVER give, get a different professor. Honestly, you will be miserable in this class.
Worst, I mean WORST teacher E-V-E-R!!! She has the world's most borinnnng and confusing teaching style, she belittles her students and to make matters worse...She will critique you on anything and everything until you feel like the worlds dumbest person. Don't take ANY classes with her!!!
This lady is horrible!! She gives you 6 assignments split into 4 exams and 2 essay papers, with a total of 300 points and if you start or end bad you are almost guaranteed to not do well at all. You don't have enough points to redeem yourself so my recommendation to everyone is DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
This woman is a monster... She picks on students relentlessly. And is depressed with her life so she tries to suck the happiness out of her students. If you want to remain happy in life then do not take this class. She will insult you, embarrass you, harass you, and make you feel like an idiot. RUN!
One of the worst teachers I've had at Clark. I have tried pretty hard in this class and am barely scraping by with a C. She's rude, confusing and unapproachable. I'm really disappointed. The tests are way too hard and there's only 4 tests and two (4-5 pages). Sounded easy until I got a bad grade on each one of them. I've never had grades this bad.
This lady has way too high of expectations of her students for an intro class. She over talks people, picks favorites, runs on irrelevant tangents and has a horrible class structure. The entire class is 4 multiple choice tests with trick questions, and confusing wording, and 2(4-5 pg) essays that she uses to belittle her students. HORRIBLE RUN AWAY
Worst teacher ive had at clark. I got a D. And i am an A student. I never missed a class and still had a very hard time. I will avoid her in the future for sure.
only instructor teaching criminology at Clark, impossible to get an A basically, luckily, if you get 68% of the final grade, you still have a C-, you have to look at the textbook very carefully to drop down everything she might ask you in the test, you can have a 3 by 5 note card in test, that is helpful, For Soc 101, Carlos Castro way betterchoice
Dr. Howell is a wealth of information. The lectures are key to passing this class however the lectures if you actually are listening and taking notes are packed full of great information and interesting comparisons. I absolutely loved my SOC& 101 class.
I had her for SOC 101. Requires her students to be Sociology masters within 2 weeks. Her expectations are far to high. Her writing assignments, although they are few, are long winded and complicated. Her tests are 50 point multiple choice but are riddled with trick questions and confusing questions. If you have her, transfer while you can!
Dr. Howell is a smart lady and retiring soon:) She knows her stuff and wants her students to learn it also. However, I feel she expects too much of her students. There were four 50 pt scantrons, and two papers. Total of 300 points. The questions on the scantrons are hard to understand what she is even asking, and the papers are very complex! Run!!
Yes, this instructor will; expect you to attend class, speak at length about the subject she teaches, set expectations, push you to think outside the box, steer you back to focus when your off in left field, and assume you are in school to learn. I had to work hard in her class and came out the other side a better student. Isn't that the point?
Mrs Howell is entirely to focused on her feminism with the last assignment just setting up the life of a single mother even though that had no bearing on the final result versus a single dad and the whole assignment was just "look how hard it is to be a woman". None of her assignments or tests had any critical thinking and were just memorize book.
