Excellent teacher. Difficult subject matter and massive amounts of information. She is fair and fun. Just go to class, study the notes and use the text for clarification.
She's a very straight forward teacher. She does not like being asked questions in class but she teaches the material well and the tests are very straight-forward. I am taking her for another class now and enjoying it!
She is very smart. She sometimes goes into too much detail.
She is very smart and knows what she makes the class way way harder than it has to be. Test questions cover more than what's talked about in class or in the book. But if you want to be a doctor and have time for countless hours of studying, she's the perfect teacher for you!! Would not recommend!
She makes this class a lot harder than it has to be. The class average on the final was 59%. We're not all trying to be doctors!!
Difficult class. YOU HAVE TO STUDY ALOT!! she does a quick review of items in class.Class tutor is very beneficial. DO NOT take this class unless it is required. Koob makes class funny but tests are way to difficult. GOOD LUCK
A&P is just a hard subject but Koob teaches it well. Must attend class to do well as tests are all from notes. Book just for reinforcement. Do the study guides try to understand not just memorize and you will do well. Tests are written to see if you understand and can use critical thinking skills.
Her tests are super hard. I would study the notes a lot. Don't know where she gets her test questions because I studies both the notes and the book and still did bad. She is a nice person and keeps class interesting with stories that don't have anything to do with the subject. I would avoid taking her classes if possible.
She is a great teacher. The tests are hard but they are completly over the notes. if you don't know the material than you won't pass the class. I rarly used the book but still passed the class.
She made her tests way to hard. I studied like not tomorrow and I still did bad. If anyone has any questions about why they are doing bad all she says is this is a hard class she doesnt help at all. This class is supposed to be something interesting and educational not something someone would not enjoy.
Koob is an amazing teacher. THIS IS A VERY TUFF CLASS THOUGH!if you aren't willing to put in a lot of time to study don't take this class! her print off review sheet will help you pass the tests. if you are able to complete it without using notes you will do fine on the test. Rachel the tutor is amazing too, go to her if you need extra help.
Was enthusiastic about her subject. Loved her cheesey geeky jokes!!
Not helpful at all. Yes she does have notes and a "review" test however, they do NOT cover anything of what is to be expected ON the test. She tests numbers, facts, worthless to the principles of what is actually SUPPOSED to be taught. Take Lonsdale for 227 and McCloskey online for 228. Trust me you won't regret it.
Great teacher, great class. Contrary to some recent posts, Koob's reviews DO cover the info on the tests, and the tutor reinforces the information (very well, I might add). I scored on A on every test, because I studied her notes and review questions. Highly recommend!
What can I say other than if you are a first timer with Biology...DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH KOOB! Her class averages on tests ARE LOW! Very intense subject to begin with, however she is NOT helpful. Take with another teacher.
Excellent teacher. A very tough class, if you think you can breeze by then you just wasted money for taking this class. If you don't stand up against this class you will get plowed by it. Tough class, but she gives you all the tools to pass you just have to put in the work and the effort, and I mean a lot of work and effort.
I would recommend waiting to take A&P when you have a easy semester so you can dedicated MANY hours of studying! I personally enjoyed Koob, however- minor "tweaking" of test questions made the tests a bit frustrating. Know your material forwards, backwards and in russian! ;)
I had her for both Biology 227 and 228. She is my favorite professor at BSU! If you go to all classes, labs, read every chapter that she covers and actively study throughout the semester, and take the textbook practice tests, then you will do fine. Her tests are tricky, so read questions multiple times before submitting.
Hard. The lecture nots don't entirely make sense. The test are hard and written to trick you. She is funny. Will get behind on notes and rush through 30+ slides the last 10 minutes of class before a test. The class is managable but really hard. I preferred Judy Lonsdale to Koob. Lab teachers are clueless or they do not speak english. Have fun
Her tests are really hard, you have to know the material and how to apply it. But she provides study guides and guided notes, complete both and study them like mad...you will do well on the tests. You have to earn every bit of your grade, she does not curve. Try to get her as your lab instructor too, she provides good notes for her lab.
This class is insanely hard. I felt extremely overwhelmed the entire time! Dr. Koob wants you to do well, but pushes LOTS OF MATERIAL in short amounts of time, and for this reason I do not recommend taking the summer course. I can easily say I learned close to nothing, it's all memorization and TONS of it! Class is awful! Enjoy!
Not helpful
This is a hard class, but if you study daily, will do fine. I liked Mel and learned a lot. You have to know the material to do well.
She provides guided lecture notes, review sheets, practice tests and a breakdown prior to each test listing how many questions will appear on each topic. If you're willing to put in the time (a lot!) and use the tools she provides, you should be successful. Her stories and quirky sense of humor help make the class more interesting.
Wonderful instructor! Exams are somewhat difficult, utilize the tools she gives you. She is quite humorous.
Great teacher. She knows what she's talking about and has a great way of teaching it. She often uses children's toys and socks to explain things for the visual learners. Her tests are difficult but that's because it's a difficult subject. I would definitely recommend her. I'm taking 228 from her next semester.
I was very pleased with Prof. Koob. I took lecture and lab from her and found both courses to be fair and rather fun. Go to class, fill in your notes, use the MANY resources she provides and you'll be fine. Any negative comments about this professor are surely from students who didn't prepare for tests well enough.
Don't let what people say scare you. Just go into the class knowing that the curriculum was created to see who wants to really TRY to succeed. She gives you EVERY resource imaginable to get an A. The only thing scary about this class is how much Koob knows about biology! She is awesome!
The class is definitely difficult, that is a given but she gives you all the material you need to succeed. Learning the material is very time consuming but is totally worth it if you are going into the health care field. She is a little quirky but that's what makes her class so fun.
knows her anatomy..
First of all it is a hard class in general! Take the time to study the material as much as you need to learn them. She gives plenty of material to review from such as practice questions, review slides and outlines. Look over them all! The questions on test are straightforward for both lecture and lab. She gives great examples to remember difficult topics! If you have to take this class I recommend this professor! I am taking her again for 228.
Holy dullness! I had Lonsdale for the first semester of Anatomy and Physiology and Koob for the second. I almost fell asleep every lecture period...and I sat in the front row!!!
She is the worse online professor I have ever came across. I have taken lots of online courses, so I feel comfortable saying she is the worse. She has no idea how to use blackboard. Her material is not suited for online courses, and it shows. She very well could be a good teacher in person but this course is horrible. Do not take it!
She gets off track about every 5 minutes. Always rushes through notes on the last day before a test. Test questions are over the tiniest details. Don't take her class.
This is class is so hard!
This class is hard in general. Professor Koob is a nice lady, but when it's time for class to end, she rushes through all of the slides. One every few seconds. Impossible to take notes in class. Slides change too fast. And the tests. She really tries to trick you with the questions.
If you can avoid taking this with Koob, do it. She rushes through slides during lecture, crams way too much information into tests, and likes to trick you! Her lab instructors also suck, so don't expect to learn anything in there either!
This was a tough class, especially to take in the summer! She tests off of her prepared notes so become VERY FAMILIAR with those and you should be golden. Youll definately be dreaming about the Na+ K+ Pump for a while. She is a bit quirky but has a good sense of humor and is very organized. She is very helpful and knowledgable!
She rushes through information too quickly, offers way too few visual aids (Lonsdale offers lots which makes it easier), and her tests consist of a lot of trick questions and very in-depth questions about concepts/processes that she did not take the time to go over well in class. Be prepared to teach yourself or utilize the tutor a lot.
Excellent instructor: provided her lecture notes on blackboard to print out as well as practice exams. Summer section was face-paced but if you PRINT OUT HER NOTES you'll have no prob keeping up with slides. Exams were in testing center with unlimited time, multiple choice & based on her notes. She is very approachable and quite funny too.
Koob is extremely thorough in explaining the chapters. i took her summer session which is very fast-paced and difficult. i didn't read the book, but i would recommend it (probably why i got a B). her exams have very specific questions so i recommend using every study tool she gives. at first may be overwhelming but you'll get used to the fast pace
Extremely hard class, too much material to make sense of and she's tries to trick you on the tests. Hard to reach, grading isn't well explained and she doesn't let you see your tests after completing them.
hard, but funny
This is a hard class, everyone knows that. She provides the tools you need though. In my experience, she is always willing to answer questions. All I did was fill out the review outlines and go over the practice tests a few times. I got 80's on all the exams. I'm planning on taking 228 with her also.
She's a pretty decent professor. She is willing to help and provide tutoring sessions through her specified tutor. However, she has the most monotone voice ever and I have trouble staying awake so just be warned that you might sleep your way through this class.
This is definately a difficult class, but it is not impossible to get an A! Koob is extremely knoweledgable about the material and is always willing to answer questions. She gives VERY straight forward study guides, if you truly study them you will pass this class with a high A.
It's a hard class to begin with. Koob will never know your name, she's pretty monotone... But if you put in the effort, study, go to each class, read the book it's actually pretty easy. But just a warning, this class will be your life. Before tests she puts up practice tests, reviews, and a break down of what to expect. VERY HELPFUL.
This class is as easy or hard as you make it. GO TO TUTORING SESSIONS, I didn't learn how helpful they were until the end of the semester which is why I only got a C. It is hard to study and break down the material on your own but use all of her study tools and tutoring and it will help immensely. She is funny and approachable, get her for lab too!
Show up to class and thoroughly study her notes.
Amazing teacher and fun to listen to. Very hard tests- go to tutoring, attend labs, study and use her reviews she gives out. She's a very talented teacher that is black and white in her approach to BIOL. Voice recorder is very helpful also get a decent study partner.
It is a very challenging course, she provides the right material information needed to pass the class with a good grade. Attendance was a big deal with taking notes, go to class. She has a great sense of humor, she is not dry with her lectures. I enjoyed this course A&P 227
Koob is a great teacher! If you go to class, her lectures help a lot on her tests and she couldn't be more clear in stating the information. This class is all about memorization, so I suggest putting in at least an hour a day for memorization. I put in about 2 hours a day and got an A no problem. It's all about dedication.
While attendance isn't mandatory I would recommend it. This class can be hard and her lectures are needed. I would recommend trying to get into her Lab section, she does lots of review for lab exams, but mostly covers what she's been teaching and even covers some lab material on lecture tests.
She is a great Instructor, some may say she is very tough, but really you just have to put effort in to this course. Do attend the lectures the notes are what she puts on the exams. You can get an A in this course just put some effort in.
Do not take this teacher. Skip the semester if you have to until you can get someone else. She got in trouble this past semester for having so many people fail her class. Abysmal experience. She should probably do something else other than teach. So far, my worst experience at BSU.
As long as you attend class and don't fall asleep (only so much of A&P is intresting) you should do ok in her class. She is funny and makes class enjoyable but you have to put in some time studying outside of class if you want an A. Her notes are what she tests off of and many test questions are taken right off of her practice test.
She teaches a hard class, and a lot of students struggle. Attending lecture really helps, even though it isn't required. She does go off on a lot of tangents during class and spends more time on example than explaining the material. There isn't a lot of homework (usually 1 assignment per week or so) but the class requires a lot of extra studying.
You'd think with her test averages being so low (D's every time) she would do something to change. Her class is pointless, she doesn't even go over notes during class she just tells pointless stories that are unnecessary. I hope BSU soon realizes that we need a new Bio teacher that WANTS to help her students and actually ENJOYS what she does.
She teaches a very difficult class. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, GO TO THE LECTURES! They will help you a ton. Her tests are really difficult and require a lot of outside work as well.
I feel as though she gave everything needed to succeed in the class. Her study guides were very helpful. The tutor for this class was also very helpful (they won't always have groups so take full advantage when they are there). It is a hard class but I think it is because of the material.
This professor completely ruined wanting to be in the medical profession for me. She made the material so boring that I actually learned more just staying home from class and reading the book than attending her horrid lectures. I would not recommend her by any means.
very hard professor
Both Koob and bio 227/228 are very hard. But Koob is an excellent professor. You have to be prepared to work your butt off in this class. Make sure to do the Learn Smart and "are you ready for exam" problems...these are easy points. I took 227 from Lonsdale and got a C and retook it with Koob and got an A. DEFINITELY take Koob.
Horrible teacher! I attended all of her classes, but she talks so fast and is so boring that you can't learn anything from her. She is not helpful and doesn't care if her students pass or fail.
A&P is a class that should be worth 5 credits, IMO. Koob does a good job of condensing it into 3. I enjoy her lectures, but also find the subject extremely interesting. Use the guided lec. notes and do the study guides. Complete all the online assignments, they're easy points. Study like crazy and you'll do fine. Take her lab section if you can!!!
I took this class and wasn't very impressed with her. She spent a lot of time telling stories instead of going over the material and I actually found her tests extremely difficult. I would study for hours and hours a week and I think the best test score I got was a 70. Take this from someone else if you can.
Do not take her class. It is extremely difficult. Her test questions are confusing and very misleading. She does not cover all the material in class.
Yes Koob is difficult but this is a 228 class not Bio 100. Some people must be really dumb to be getting 20-50% on her exams, all you need to do is READ lecture notes she provides for you. Use some knowledge. Koob is a good professor that cares how her students do, but theres only so much she can do for those who dont care.
I think Koob is a good professor. Yeah, the subject matter is complex but she provides more than enough study guides and materials for exams that if you put in the effort (ATTEND lectures and STUDY for exams) then you should be able to pass.
Great teacher and an incredible amount of material. Go to class, used the guided notes she provides and fill out the tests reviews. Not easy but A is within your grasp. Also, she responds to emails within 12 hrs and I never waited to get answers during her office hours.
Koob is a fantastic teacher - plain and simple. She is very knowledgeable and passionate. The class isn't easy but I got an A both semesters through hard work. If you love biology and you study hard, you can get an A. Memorize her online lectures and her notes. Do EVERYTHING she recommends for studying. Don't be a baby, this is college.
Koob is a great professor. All of the previous ratings of anything below exceptional are more than likely from individuals who are looking to blame someone for their lack of effort. Koob provides absolutely everything necessary to get an A in both courses. Attend lecture (you're paying for it.) And use the STUDY MATERIAL she provides on her site.
Koob is a great teacher. Her tests are all multiple choice but if you go to class and listen to her analogies the test questions wont seem too bad. go to the TA study sessions, and do the study guides. overall, she is such a good teacher. just a little tough at times
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. Worst I've had at BSU. She took the very interesting subject of anatomy and destroyed it into the most boring lectures I've ever had the misfortune to attend. If possible, take from anyone other than Koob.
Koob is an excellent professor. She gives you all the tools you need to be successful in her courses. If you put in the effort, you'll do well. She gives you TAs to talk to, pretests for the exams, practice exams, and is willing to discuss issues you have. She's excellent!!!
You need to read the textbook on your own time. If you don't, you WILL have difficulty understanding the lecture portion due to the amount of material discussed.
A&P will always be a difficult subject. Koob does an awesome job explaining both concepts while making it interesting. Her stories and examples are really useful. Just study, study, study, because I can promise you, if you don't, you'll fail any A&P course.
Do no take Koob. She is quite hilarious and engaging, but her tests have nothing to do with the book, nor her notes. I study very hard, attent tutoring, and still do not pass her tests, even though I get A's on the homework. Take A&P from a different professor.
Worst professor I've ever had. Of course the material is hard, but she made it 10X more complicated than necessary. Her notes had nothing to do with the exams. Take it with someone else.
Definitely a hard class but I don't blame HER, nor should anyone else, for bad grades. Go to class. Read the textbook, as you should. Use the lecture notes, practice tests and review sheets. Do work like you should in college, and you'll be fine.
This class is HARD, and there's no getting around this. Koob is a genius though. She knows what she's lecturing on and she really tries to make this class good. Like other reviews have stated, you need to put in the work. If you never come to class or study, you'll fail. Do the work and come to class. A&P is fascinating and you learn so much!
This class is extremely difficult and involves a lot of studying. But Koob does a great job of providing lectures, videos, outlines, and other info. She tells you what you need to know and it's up to you to put in the effort. I think she's a great instructor and I definitely learned a lot, even though I got my first B in this class.
EXTREMELY difficult class for a Freshman level course. Excellent professor. Professor Koob has an entertaining teaching style. She was very helpful and understanding when I fell behind due to my wife's emergency surgery. Professor Koob worked with me to help me get back on track after missing two weeks of class. LOTS of online assignments.
There is no doubt that this is a hard class. The key to passing the tests is to really study her lecture notes. They are huge on her lecture exams. You must have great time management to take this class. It's not for the faint of heart.
Do not take this class from this professor. I attend the lectures and use her notes. She doesn't do a good job of clearly presenting the material. She is very bland and confusing. She does not cover all the material on the exams. She relies heavily on the connect assignments but does not use the material in the exams. Find a different professor.
This class is very time consuming, and her tests are very confusing. She is a good professor and knows her material but the tests always try and trick you.
If you have the choice between Lonsdale and Koob, choose Lonsdale. Koob is a great person and shows great intrest in this subject. However, she wastes a lot of class time with nonhelpful information, songs and stories. Her learnsmart assignments are extremely long and due before we have learned about the topic.
She goes through information very quickly and expects you to know how to apply the information in just a week. Her tests are confusing, all multiple choice, all answers are almost right, just one word will make the entire question wrong or right. It is possible to get a decent grade if you study and say goodbye to a social life.
I feel like this class is designed to confuse, complicate and force students to despair. Koob doesn't teach well, HW is a waste of time and you are expected to learn huge sections of material on your own. As a post-bac, I've never had a teacher test on material that wasn't covered in class or not teach something because 'it was covered in lab'.
The professor has a dry sense of humour but I find that hilarious!. If you aren't familiar with the material before taking the class it's like learning a new language so it's intense. The professor knows her stuff she has tons of visual aids she brings to class which make it helpful.
Do not take this class. Her tests are really confusing and she tries to trick you. I always thought I did a decent job on the test and ended up doing really bad every time. She isn't a mean teacher but she's really hard and definitely sets you up for failure. I will be taking this class again because of her. :(
The class itself is tough. Her tests are on the difficult side but you learn a lot. She is brilliant. The negative comments are probably from the students who didn't study andor use the Learning Assistants. She knows this subject very well. She adds in good, fun, dry humor.
Tests are tough!! In my class she never actually got through a single lecture. MUST READ THE BOOK!!! She's tough but she tries to be helpful by using props to clarify her point. Really hard class most the people I know didn't pass and their majors are in the health care field. Good luck if you take her, but if you aren't feeling it definitely drop.
A&P is the hard part about this - not the professor. Koob is wonderful. You have to study your butt of to get the A, but it's very doable because she gives you all the resources that you need. I can't stress enough how extrememly helpful the LA sessions are. Go to class, go to LA sessions, use her study materials, and be confident.
Took Biology 227 from her. She is the only teacher so far, but is horrible. Her lectures do not correlate with the tests. They are very hard no matter ow many study hours you put in. The LA sessions aren't super helpful either because they just repeat what the lectures are about.
If you are not a test taker Koob will destroy you. This class is more about critical thinking than knowing the material. She will try and stump you with words. If I came into this class with a 3.8 GPA- In college, and barely passed this class that is saying something....
Koob is a hoot and she really wants her students to understand the material inside and out. This is why her tests are so difficult. Just memorization is not good enough for this class. If you are not willing to study hard and think critically, this is not the class for you!! I skipped many lectures, but watched the online versions and got an A.
Koob is terrible. She honestly doesn't care about her students at all. She'll give you a 26 page note packet for the next test and maybe go over 6 pages of it, if even that. Half the stuff on the test isn't anything we've gone over during class, so she fails to teach us what we need to know. She is one of the worst biology teachers I've ever had.
She is the worst teacher ever.
Professor Koob is a tough teacher, but she clearly articulates in lecture what she expects us to know for the test. I am pleased that I had the opportunity to take it from her.
Lectures-opptional. Test are based of lecture notes-have the notes, study and study some more and will be fine on the test. Test are difficult in the sense of Koob rephrases the questions-stay alert. I enjoy the way she grade-points instead of percentage.
This class is a joke. Koob does not cover all of the notes and if we're lucky she may talk about half of the stuff on there, but for the most part she just says "We'll talk about this next time". Next time never happens. Never ever.
Koob does a good job going over stuff that will be on the test. Like someone else said, she often doesn't get through all the material, but when she doesn't she won't test on what she hasn't covered (unless it's extra credit). You have access to all her lectures through CONNECT, so I just stopped going to class and watched those and I got an A
This class was very difficult, but she taught the material well! I also had to use youtube to help, and read the book, but there were plenty of LA's who held sessions that were super helpful, and Koob would give help if you were active enough to go to her office. The material wasn't hard-- there was just a lot of it.
Koob is an excellent teacher. People complain that she sucks but thats only because they get bad grades. Anatomy is a difficult subject, you have to study and read the material, a lot. Koob does expect you to know a lot but you're in college, you should be learning and studying. If you want to learn anatomy, take her. If you want an easy A, don't.
Way too much information in way too little of time. She skims over things, and the tests are incredibly difficult. This is the worst class I have ever taken and she makes it even more difficult. I would recommend trying to get any professor but Koob.
Koob has tough tests, and will make them tougher if the average is above a 75. If you're trying to get an A take a different professor. Allow losts of time to study and go to LA session when possible.
Koob's test are tough. The average grade for every test when I took her was 68, but her along the other professors curve it. Allow yourself to study A LOT and make sure you take advantage of the LA Sessions and office hours. I decided to take 228 online to see if it goes by better. Good luck!
This class is often referred to as the single most difficult class at Boise state university. Professor Koob strives to earn that title, at the cost of hundreds of students GPAs. She is a very tough teacher to say the least. I don't usually say this for any professor but, AVOID KOOB AT ALL COSTS. You have been warned.
Very hard. Who knows what's on the test. Readgo to the lecture. Probably won't help too much, though. She gets feedback each semester but scoffs at it at the beginning of class. It would be great if she just taught what was going to be on the test.
People give Koob a bad time for the difficulty of the class but in reality the subject is just very intense to begin with. Also, if she doesn't cover something she tells you specifically to learn it outside of class - it's not like she springs it on you. If you spend the needed time you will get a good grade, just don't skip lecture.
Professor Koob was an interesting and informative teacher. She had a packet of notes for each unit, and LITERALLY everything on the tests were pulled from there. If she didn't cover something, and we saw it on a test, it was extra credit. The tests were tough because you had to think critically about the questions instead of just regurgitate info.
Koob gets a lot of bad ratings, I completely disagree. If you want an A in any class, you need to go to class, pay attention, and study. I have gotten a 98% 100% and 103% on her first three tests so far. I HIGHLY recommend the recorded lectures she has online. I listen to them every time I get in my car. Go to class, use the practice test, studyA
Professor Koob gets a lot of negative ratings on here. I really enjoy her as a teacher. She does a lot of demonstrations and tries to keep the lecture enjoyable. She provides notes which you fill in along with here and everything on the notes is on the exams. This is a hard course but as long as you study you can get a good grade.
She purposely designs her tests to try and trick you. I've never failed a class in my life, but couldn't score higher than a 50 on any of her exams. If you're not going to be a doctor or a nurse, then you don't really need this class anyway. Just pray you pass with a C and learn to AVOID KOOB AT ALL COSTS.
KOOB IS GREAT!!! People give bad ratings for her because they have no freaking clue how difficult A&P is. It is not like ANY other class and you seriously have to study. Any A&P class requires twice the amnt of study time when compared to other classes and she does a GREAT job at providing as much assistance to take an edge off of the difficulty
Koob is amazing!! Yes, her class is challenging and she makes you work for an A so that's probably why students have such an issue with her. Study, study, study.. You'll thank yourself once exam weeks come along. She offers great review material on Blackboard (similar tests, fill in the blank etc) & I love the LA sessions!
Koob is a very good teacher. Many people will try and say she is a terrible and tries to 'trick' students on tests. These are generally the people who do not want to put the work in to receive the grade they desire. I enjoy her class a lot and Mel's teaching style is helpful. She uses many analogies that help you remember topics on the test.
Anatomy is a hard class with a lot of material to cover but Koob does a really good job with it. Tests are based directly off lectures, so show up and take good notes or work with other students. Anything not covered on the notes is eligible for extra credit. This class is made for health majors so keep that in mind and take advantage of your LA's!
Like everyone else is saying, A&P isn't meant to be easy, but Koob gives you all the resources you need to succeed. If you don't do well, it's because you are LAZY. I put in the work and received an A. Koob is extremely intelligent, funny, and desires to help you in any way possible.
She's an amazing biology professor. Even though the class is very hard due to subject matter, she gives you so many resources to succeed. Practice outlines and questions are always provided for each unit we are tested on. If you don't do well, it's because you are lazy.
Koob is the worst professor to take A&P from. The material itself is interesting and I would spend hours studying her powerpoints and the book. All of the trouble would begin on the exams. Her tests were awful, all trick questions and she treats her students unequally. Her campus classes get extra credit and online classes don't.
Professor Koob is the best anatomy teacher in the treasure valley. Yeah, it's difficult, but the body is difficult. She brings in materials to make lectures more hands on and clear. She always has aides that have MANY study sessions. And she has office hours that you can drop in. She has GUIDED LECTURE NOTES. She makes this class so accessible.
Her lectures were great and made a lot of sense; but her tests ): 95% of the material you have never seen before. I would study non stop for a week and still had a hard time on the test. I am a bio/chem double major so I am inclined to the topic. her tests are honestly made to trick you. Nice, but those tests are unfair. Take it with someone else.
She is a difficult teacher and tests suck but hey she isaid trying to prepare you people for the medical field and you won't just slide by with an a in this class without any work. If you watch the online lectures, and memorize the review sheet, you will be fine. but do those two things otherwise you will struggle. It's tough but you can do it
Koob is a terrible professor and I will never take her ever again. I took her my freshman year and got a C. And took it my sophomore year with a different professor and got an A. She is terrible
I took 227 over the 5 week summer course and t was not easy, but this course is not meant to be easy! You cannot fall behind, but she gives you everything you need to pass and then some. Extra videos/recorded lecture/memory games etc. if you didn't pass the class it was simply because you weren't willing to put in the effort.
This class with any teacher is difficult but Koob really gives you everything you need and more to succeed. If you don't pass it's only because you didn't use all of the resources she gives you! She's brilliant in anatomy and loves what she's doing which makes the class much more enjoyable. I wouldn't take it with anyone else!
She is a very nice lady, but her teaching is not bad but she doesn't really explain. This class is extra extra work outside of this class, so you need to study or you will fail!!!
Great Professor. The class is tough, but definitely manageable if you're willing to put in the study time. I dig her dry, witty humor in lecture.
Koob is tough. This class will take over your life, there is an asinine amount of material covered and little time between exams to master an unrealistic amount of material. I would recommend not working while taking this class and not taking more than 12 credits. She does allow you to drop your lowest exam score which is nice.
I'm in the middle of this class right now and I can say that I really appreciate Koob. She works really hard to help you understand the material and gives you numerous resources. Of course everyone learns differently so you need to be creative in this class to understand it YOUR way. Study, and take the class seriously and you'll do fine.
Koob is an awesome teacher! Attendance isn't mandatory, although you NEED to go to be successful. The class is hard no matter who you take it from, and Koob provides you SO many resources to be successful: guided notes, study guides, recorded lectures, reviews. She is awesome. People just don't like her because they're too lazy to do the work.
Does not like to teach just likes to go through slides and expects you to learn it on your own and be prepared for her very confusing very hard tests
Koob was a great professor for a very difficult class. Lecture attendance is a MUST; unless you are an extremely successful independent learner who learns greatly from textbooks then you won't succeed.
I did not enjoy having koob as a professor at all. I felt that she did not make the subject matter interesting or easy to understand.
I took this teacher at college of western Idaho. Our entire class, first test, all failed. She even through in 10 extra credit points, the highest grade was a low C. Second tes, even worse, she through in a random extra 10 points, highest grade D. Teacher is very lecture heavy, does give you outlines, also a practice test, but this test is NOT help
Koob is a good professor that has a bad reputation. This class is going to hard no matter who you take it with but with Koob it is manageable. Do the guided notes, listen to the recored lectures, and make flash card and you will do fine. Getting B's and A's is possible you just need to but in the work.
There is so much material covered in such a short amount of time. Being a full time student with a job made it extremely hard to juggle this class. . Koob is extremely nice, knowledgeable, and tries to make the class lighthearted but you really need to devote all your extra time to this class in order to succeed.
Super hard class, a lot is expected. Thats understandable that most people taking this class are going into the medical field. Not a real personal professor. Glad i switched majors to something that makes me happy, but just and unreal super hard class.
Prof Koob was a hoot! I took a lot from her class and would take it again in a heartbeat. She does an exemplary job teaching the material and brings resources from home to further drive home how to learn. Ample study resources provided, and she is fair. She writes her tests to sort those that know the material front and back, from those that don't.
Koob is the worst professor i have ever had. I have never failed a class in my entire life and this was the first class i failed. The tests were ridiculously hard and had nothing to do with the lectures, the assignments, or even the extra practice posted to blackboard. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH ANOTHER PROFESSOR!
attendance isnt mandatory, but if you want to pass dont. Koob was nice, and tried her hardest to help explain, but it wasnt enough for me. Very dry. Lots of in class work- if you miss class no makeup. tests were awful. Sometime 2-3 questions in one question. I refuse to take her again. anyone will be better
Mel koob is AMAZING. People don't like her because the class is hard, but it's anatomy it's not supposed to be easy. She gives you WAY more resources to be successful than any other teacher, including guided notes, study guides, recorded lectures, practice tests, and tutoring sessions. People don't do well in her class because they don't work hard.
VERY TOUGH
Lecture notes and lectures aren't that useful. She pretty much just explains pictures/diagrams all class. Usually don't even finish the note packet and have to watch the online lectures. The tests are definitely based off her note packet/review rather than the book and learn smart activities
High expectancy for time, studying currently 20-25 hours a week plus 6-8 hours a week of her lectures online, I passed the learn smart, labs, quizzes and assignments. But did not do so great with the exams. DO NOT TAKE ONLINE COURSE. HIGHLY RECOMMEND CWI over BSU's class. Read, read again and re-read. Exam questions are very confusingly worded.
Koob is a great teacher. She expects hard work out of her students, but this is college. She provides everything to get an A. Her tests are based off of her lecture notes. If you know the notes forwards and backwards, then you'll get a good grade. She also gives you a practice exam that is very similar to the exam. This class isn't that hard.
honestly do not know how you can get through all the material she expects you too and retain any of it. The learnsmart activities that is paired with the reading, the labs, the lectures, the homeowkr and the quiz each week. I struggle to keep up in this class, not to mention the other two classes that I have to set aside time for.
As if this material wasn't difficult enough she adds extra things in her notes that are not in the text, nearly impossible to get through the assigned material for the week. She does give additional materials for studying, which is great, but normally there is not enough time to go through them all and retain anything. we are not all med students
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR - She has extremely high expectations for this class. Bio 227/228 is required for several majors not just Nursing, if you are not a Nursing major FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR. Brutal expectation to detail and little time to attend all the material adequately, not enough time to complete all the reading/lectures in each module.
Her tests trick you.
One of the worst professors i've had at bsu. Lectures are all over the place and the tests are designed to trick you. Should not be teaching a 400 level class
Professor Koob is great. Her exams are relatively difficult, but she sets you up for success by offering pre-exams and blank outlines to fill out and if you can fill those out without using your notes then you'll do fine on the exams. She is funny and if you go to class and pay attention you'll learn a lot of amazing information!
She is a great teacher that really loves her material, but this is a advanced class so you really do have to study and put a lot of work in.
Dr. Koob was a fantastic teacher. She is fun, knowledgable, and just great person. That being said, be prepared to work. Biology 227 and 228 are very challenging and you must keep up your motivation if you want to have a good grade. Dr. Koob will give you everything you need to get an A, all you have to supply is your drive.
This is the hardest class I've ever taken. Koob is a really nice lady and incredibly smart. Unfortunately, her tests are absurdly hard. Be prepared to devote all of your time studying for this class. There is a ton of material to cover, and you're expected to do a large portion of it outside of class.
Koob gets a bad wrap but if you are this class is just hard in general. She gives you so many tools to succeed in this class and is very understanding. For 227 and 228 I took the online 5 week class, and passed just fine.
This professor gets a lot of mixed reviews. I am telling you this class with her as the teacher is more than passable. For me, going to as many LA sessions I could, writing out the blank outlines before tests, and not skipping class led me to get an A. She is SO nice in person. Like anything, getting lazy makes anything hard.
Koob is awesome. I learned so much from her class. She is quirky, but teaches the concepts very well. This class is tough, but she is fair and lets you know how to succeed. There are plenty of LA sessions offered and if you go to class, do the reading, and review you'll do fine.
I found this class nearly impossible to pass. Even if I studied and used all materials and resources given by Professor Koob, I never got a good grade on the test because of how ridiculously difficult they are. The exams are never like the practice exams and every question is a trick question.
I basically hated my life while taking this class. Spent hours and hours studying for her lab and lecture which you have an exam every week or every other week when you combine the two. She gives study guides but goes really fast and does not leave a lot of time to understand the material. Her tests were impossible to get good grades on. Trick q's
As if this class wasn't hard enough, taking it with Koob has been bad. I went into this class very determined and am coming out of it discouraged. It seems like no matter how hard I study, Koob continues to make this course difficult. She is a really nice lady but the tests are made to trick you. I would try to get a different lecture professor.
biology 227 is a hard class so no matter who you take it's going to be hard. Koob gives a lot of study material which is what helped me a lot and the LA sessions.
Koob is a very nice lady. But this class has been the hardest class I have ever taken. BIO 227 is already supposed to be a difficult class, but Koob makes the tests nearly impossible to pass. Tests every other week (with lab and lecture). I used all of her resources, studying upwards of 16 hours per test, and still did poor on tests. Trick qs
I felt that Koobs class is easy to pass if you just put in the time and the effort. It not only takes studying on your own but asking the instructor for help and going to extra LA sessions. Take time to learn how you study and you will be fine. If you really want a good grade you will get it. Koob gives you a lot of material too.
Koob has lots of information available - use it all. Her tests are designed so that if you actually understand the "how" and the "what" you can get an A. You have to study. She was readily available and was willing to help me understand when I didn't. Slow down and read the questions on the test. You'll figure out most answers by going slow.
No matter what professor you end up with this class is incredibly difficult. I liked how Koob incorporated stories to different learning concepts. However her lectures were hard to understand if you didn't read or do any of the homework. Tests are really hard but take your time and make sure you understand everything.
Never covers all the material on the test. You pretty much have to teach yourself everything.
Prof. Koob was good. She tends to stay on topic and tries to make the subject interesting. Uses multimedia well including many pictures, some physical props, and a few videos and doesn't just read the slide. Lots of extralecture material to help study the ideas, though she doesn't go out of her way to give test answers. Only grades tests and lab.
Koob is hilarious, knows her stuff, and will answer any questions after class in depth. The human body is amazing and she made it even better. She does go of topic sometimes but will never test over anything she didn't go over in class. She gives entire fill in the blank sheets on what will be on the test. Excellent professor, very down to earth.
Good, professor explains stuff well. Is extremely knowledgeable on advanced anatomy concepts for those students wanting to pursue MD route. Only people that are mentally weak have a tough time with this course, otherwise you will do just fine.
She is really passionate about biology and seems to actually care about her students. Extremely knowledgeable about the subject which helps because the class is tough. Always replied to emails in good time and material that wasn't covered in class turned into bonus questions on the tests.
After reading some of the reviews on here, I was a little nervous heading into 227 with Koob. After taking that class and close to finishing 228 with her, I can say that those nerves were unnecessary. A&P is about conceptual understanding and memorization. If you put in the time and study efficiently, you'll be fine.
Bio227 and 228 were the hardest classes I've taken at Boise State. Definitely lecture heavy. The guided lecture notes help a ton and so did the practice exams. Go to as many Learning Assistant sessions as possible! Koob is an excellent teacher but her exams are really hard, sometimes even if you study a lot.
She doesn't cover everything in class so expect to learn some material on your own.
A&P is a tough class, but Dr. Koob is fair. The only way to do well in the class is to dedicate a pretty significant amount of time into really learning the material. She trys to make it fun and interesting. She really knows her stuff and will help you if you go in and talk to her.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. Professor Koob is a nice lady, but her exams are incredibly hard. The class is hard enough, but she designs the exams to try to trick you, and no matter how many hours I put into studying with all of her material, I end up getting a worse grade than I expect. Take it from a different professor
I really like Koob as a person but as a professor not so much. No matter how much I studied and how long I studied, I would do horribly on her exams. Her tests are extremely difficult and the wording of the questions were tricky. Be prepared to devote all your time studying for this class.
Koob throws a lot of information at you and a lot of it is NOT on the test. She changes the terms she uses often so be prepared for that in lectures as well as tests. Her tests are very confusing. Be sure to get a really good lab instructor if you can, the lab can save your grade. Be prepared to read like crazy and take notes.
I took A&P with Koob over this last summer in a 5 week class. The class was very tough, but she really wants you to succeed. She posted all of her lectures online so if you missed something in class you can review later. Everyone told me that she was such a difficult teacher, but she has taught me so much about A&P because she has a passion for it.
This is NOT an easy class! However, Marilyn does a really good job at dissecting the material to prepare her students for real world experiences. The lecture tests were fine for me but a lot of my peers struggled with them. My advice, listen to the lectures online, do all learnsmarts and connects, and FIND A GOOD LAB INSTRUCTOR.
Mel is friendly and tries to make her lectures engaging. Her lectures are very easy going. Attendance isn't taken and she isn't strict on students using their phones or laptops. Majority of the grade is from tests, which are VERY difficult. She gives study guides and guided notes but they are not helpful when it comes to the actual test.
Koobs alright, listening to her lectures is very boring and slow. We get through maybe half the chapters we're supposed to do during lecture but doesn't add stuff on the test not covered in class. The class is hard but there are plenty of tools to succeed, and I recommend going to study sessions held by the teacher assistants if you're struggling.
Koob is very knowledgeable about biology and made lectures funny and had great examples and ways to remember things. Her class is hard, but if you study the tests are easy to pass.
Koob is an amazing professor who is absolutely hilarious. If you do what she says and take advantage of the resources that she gives, this class is a breeze. The class is hard but she will do anything to help people succeed. Be prepared to work and be attentive but dont take this class if you plan on slacking and not attending.
Koob really knows a lot about biology unfortunately I found it really hard to keep up with her during lectures and felt that much of the information covered in class wasn't relevant to the tests.
Not sure why her rating isn't higher. This class is hard and will be no matter who teaches it. She gives you all of the resources you need to succeed- go to lectures, attend LA sessions, read the book, fill out reviews- it's an information dump and you will have to spend time learning the material to do well. Put in the work and you'll do well.
Advice: you reap what you sow in this class. A lot of people say that Koob is a bad professor, but those people usually didn't put in the time and effort. In order to be successful: show up to class, study everyday, and use her resources! She is a fair teacher and only tests you over what you covered in lecture and she gives you so many resources!
Koob get's a bad wrap at Boise State in my opinion. She genuinely cares for her students and wants them to succeed. She offers a crazy amount of resources to draw from, the subject matter is just difficult because there is so much of it. Take your time to really think through questions on her test and quality study is better than quantity.
She gives you as much help as you can get, and makes sure you have all the resources to succeed. If you use everything she offers (ie. optional resources on blackboard, practice tests, extra online lectures, etc.) it will help a lot.
Knowledgable teacher but hard to understand. The tests are ridiculous. She will test you on anything in the whole textbook and lectures. It does not matter if she went over it, in her powerpoints, or her recorded lectures. Every day I went to class I was a little more lost.
You hear horror stories about A+P, but in all honesty if you have time to dedicate to this class it is not incredibly difficult. You need to memorize so much information that it's overwhelming. Koob is a fairly good professor; the material is just so dry it's hard to actually engage in her lectures.
This course is different from her B227 course in that she kinda takes the training wheels off. You are required to know all the material laid out in her lecture notes even if she does not get to it in lecture, so watch her tegrities. There is also significantly less extra credit opportunities as there was in B227. BUT systems/material is easier!
BIO 227/228 get a bad rep because you have to put in the TIME, EFFORT, and STUDYING to do well. 228 is heavier on more body systems/physiology, so I found it a bit harder than 227. I love Mel, but wish she didn't spend so much time on the heart and covered more on the immune/lymph systems. Find her hilarious and enjoyed lectures.
This class isn't easy and I don't recommend taking it if you aren't willing to put in the time and effort. Koob's exams really test whether or not you KNOW the material- and she gives you all of the resources you need to succeed. Study, go to class, attend LA sessions, form study groups- there's so much to learn in this class! Great professor.
Koob is a great professor; she's very intelligent and passionate about her lectures. I took 228 online to avoid the 3 hour labs and I got an A. I got a B in 227. These courses are difficult because there is so much material to understand, however this is not her fault. She truly wants everyone to succeed and gives all the resources to do so.
Koob is an amazing professor, she is very intellectual and funny at times. She does give out opportunities to get extra points! She provides several study materials to help you in the class, the exam is wordy and somewhat difficult but if you study the material, attend LA sessions and lecture you should pass. The class is HARD. Online code>book
tests were confusing, the material on study guide NOT ON TESTS Lecture heavy does not give you any study tips except for reading the power points and take notes would show how many students got what PERCENT ON THE EXAMS NOT A VERY GOOD PROFESSOR
These test are extremely difficult and I have noticed certain students respond and learn from her and some don't however when I was in her class and we got the class average on test every single one was failing so good luck. Highlyy suggest taking med term before.
Koob is a very knowledgable prof, but her lectures are boring and I always find myself losing interest. I've studied my butt off the last 3 tests and have failed 2/3 because they are EXTREMELY difficult. A lot of the material wasn't covered at all, and most questions go into the fine details that I don't even remember learning about.
This Professor is amazing and knows what she is talking about. She provides several different ways to study and often emails an entire overview of what you learned that unit. When she says everything that's on the test is in your notes is very true. If you go to LA sessions and know the material like the back of your hand you will succeed.
Koob is not a very good teacher. Grades are only based on your test grades and there is no opportunity for extra credit. She skips over material that's on the test in her lectures. Her tests are extremely difficult and worded like the students are professors. Her lectures don't make sense or match her guided notes.
She is a great professor, you just need to work hard and put in effort on your own time to learn the material as well as attending her lectures because a lot of this course is memorization.
Does not cover a large portion of the material that is on the tests. You will have to teach yourself about 40% of the course. The best advice I can give if you have to take her class is to watch the recorded lectures.
This class is not easy by any means, but Mel gives you literally every opportunity in the book to succeed. She records all her lectures, gives you notes, practice tests, test breakdowns and even does review sessions and games if you come to class. For some pretty dry material, she does her very best to make it interesting.
Professor Koob is good for some students but when I took the class the majority of the subject you have to teach yourself because on the exam she goes into the smallest detailed she never talked about in lecture. After every single test the class average was failing. The questions on the exam were made to trick you so read at least twice.
I came into this class having received straight As in the past, and got my first ever C. The class is so heavily test based, and she claims that you will be fine if you know the study guide front and back, yet goes into the most minuscule details on the test about stuff that wasnt covered on the study guide or lecture. Run for the hills.
Apparently if you just review her lecture notes and do her study guides for the test, you'll be fine, but then you go into the test and it is just the most minor details she tests you on. Got a C & D on almost every test.
Koob is a great teacher, but her class is hard and not an easy A. The whole class is based around tests that are very detailed and have a lot of trick questions. Get ready to teach yourself the material. The study guides do not help. I got a C, D & Fs on her tests. She does you notes, records her lectures, practice test, but it still didn't help.
If you want to be teaching yourself and studying A LOT, then this is the class for you. Her lectures are a cluster, her exams are ridiculous, her notes are pretty much useless, practice reviews are a joke. Her exams are nothing but tricky questions and some questions she didn't even cover on lecture or notes. I wouldn't recommend her.
You will have to read the book AND watch lectures to be successful. Do the study guides. She does write trick questions and minute/specific details (like percentages) on exams. Lectures are more specific than the book, so be sure to print her notes and pay attention- exam ?s come from lectures. She responds to emails quick and is very helpful.
Koob is amazing! The people who complain are the ones who don't show up to class or don't use all of the resources she provides. It's a difficult class, but she tells you very clearly what you need to do to pass and succeed. Her blackboard is always full of extra videos and resources, and if you use those and study hard, you'll be fine.
She is literally terrible. I honestly dont know about her in person classes but her online class is terribly un organized and it is clear she doesnt know what she is doing. If you ask for help she will respond with a terribly condescending email. She will not help you and also not tell you what tests are on so you are left guessing. do not take!!!
Professor K*ob has tests that are not on any material that we've covered so that's awesome. No matter how much you study it is hard to get a good grade in this class. I can tell she's trying her best so ig that counts for something, but 10/10 would not take again! xD
Tried to give us a lot of materials to study just wasn't the best professor for this class. I didn't hate her and I ended up passing but had to use a lot of outside sources from class to pass this one( youtube, google images, etc.) . Lab was the worst part, be prepared to know every muscle and bone in one test.
Going into this class, I had heard only good things about Koob from other professors I knew. Online class for her, however, is a mess. She wants you to know every muscle, every bone, every nerve. The lectures are mediocre, the textbook full of information that won't be used, and I spent more time on this class than the rest of my classes combined.
This class is hard. There was little interaction between me and the prof but she grades and responds to emails quickly. She knows what tf shes talking about too. I feel as tho most of the reviews are based off the class and not the prof. She gives you ample resources to learn, but you gotta put in the work to actually understand it.
I took this class fully online and it was a nightmare. There was so much information to learn for the lab and lecture. There is a test like every two weeks for either lab or lecture. This class is basically all relying on your test grades. The homework is easy but worth almost no points. The lectures are long and tough to focus on.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. Her class is actually completely pointless! So don't bother going. Watch the online lectures and you might learn a thing or two, but this entire course is completely on you, and memorizing a literal impossible amount of information. I managed to squeak out an A after putting about 80 hours a week into this.
Obviously, anatomy is a hard class. Koob is very smart about A & P, but her lectures do not match what is on the tests. Just read the book and take notes from power points of the book. She is not always easy to reach and is not very cooperative if you miss a quiz. You need to stay on your game for this class because you can get behind very quickly.
Do everything in your power to not take this class at BSU. If this is your only option though, expect to learn EVERYTHING on your own. Bio 227 is the most sloppy, ludicrous, and disorganized class I've ever taken. Expect to treat the lab & lecture as two separate courses, since they're never on the same page. Impossible work loads given in each.
Expect to study for hours upon hours only to receive half the grade you thought you would on her exams. Unfortunately, this is who creates the exams for BIO227. The averages on the exams clearly show that something is lacking.
You basically have to memorize the textbook if you want even a remotely good grade. Even if you did memorize the textbook half of the test is not in the textbook. I did everything she suggested to pass the tests and I still fail. The class is mainly based off of tests. I've still learned a lot, but have nothing to show for it.
Never gotten a grade below an A until this class. I study exactly what were told to before an exam, take notes during lecture, read the textbook, etc and Im barely scrapping by with a D on the exams! Super frustrating considering our grade is weighted so heavily on tests.
I have never not understood so much in a class. I have not missed a single class yet have not gotten above a C on any of the test. You basically need to memorize the textbook for a good grade. I take 6-8 pages of notes of every chapter in the book and the test is totally different with more material than what I got.
Koob provides plenty of resources to accurately follow lectures and study materials for each chapter. Bio A&P is a hard class with a large course load but if you put in the effort, you should be able to pass. Lab & lecture follows textbook + manual chapters extensively. Be ready to spend 10-20 hours a week on homework alone! Exams are 70% of grade.
I would highly suggest to run as FAR away from this teacher as possible. Tests do NOT relate to anything on the exams, I take very detailed notes on top of her lecture notes and never received a grade equivalent to all the studying I have put it. Worst teacher, I have listened to her suggestions and have not gotten a good test score ever.
I had to read the text books, take notes, watch recorded lecture, attend in person lecture, complete online assignments and I still averaged about a 50-60% on all the exams. I feel as if there was an exam every other week and it's very time consuming. I will not be taking Bio 228.
Koob is honestly a great Professor. She knows what she is talking about. This is a difficult class no matter who you take. I recommend watching recorded lectures for Lab and Lecture before the in class Lecture. Use your textbook. Use guided notes but also make your own notes. She is a quick talker but I honestly loved her and I am taking her in 228
Her lectures are not helpful and she doesn't even cover all of the material that will be on the exams. The exams do not match the lectures and have questions that haven't even been covered. She blames us for struggling, yet won't assist students who need extra help. Would not recommend taking unless you want to teach yourself for dumb exams.
Worst professor I have ever had. Told us on the first day of class that the majority of us will fail. No matter how much you study you will still probably fail. If you take the tests online it is through the textbook website and she doesn't write any of the questions. What she says in lecture is never on the exam.
I put 20 hours a week into this class and barely managed to get a B+. The content and information that comes from this course is fascinating but Koob fails about half of her students. Half of my lecture dropped her class by the 8th week and by the final week, there was only a third of the students left. I would certainly not recommend her.
Its true that half the class will be failing as she says in the beginning. She does give tons of resources and extra videos on Canvas. Do your reading and print and fill out all practice tests/work and youll be fine! Its a hard course that requires you to apply yourself shes a great professor and success is up to how hard you work.
She makes you work for your grade. this course is pretty difficult but she does explain everything you need to know and gives you hints on whats on the exams. I recommend buying the textbook and studying from that. Spent 4-8 hours a day studying so be dedicated and you'll get good grades on your exams. do the practice reviews she gives you.
Koob was honestly the best professor I had this summer, but I wouldnt take her class if you think you can do nothing and pass it. Definitely more textbook heavy and if you put in the work it will be an easy class. Everyone whos putting a bad rate either didnt know how to study or just didnt work for it.
It was SO bad I wanna give her a zero, but its not possible so I give her a 1. NO EMPATHY for students having a hard time turning in work. Would not recommend.
Koob was honestly awful. Yes, she puts a lot of effort into her lectures by using props & models, but none of that is helpful for the tests. Everyone I know in this class was constantly studying, but would never get over 70% on the tests. be prepared to memorize the entire textbook to do well. Basically people only passed by cheating on the tests.
Ms. Koob is a phenomenal teacher. Her tests are based on her lectures. I stopped reading the textbook and watched her lectures multiple times and was able to pass with an "A". This material isn't for the faint of heart. You need to put your own time in and study. Not just watch lectures. PUT IN THE WORK. what you give is what you get.
She did a good job of teaching and providing resources for such a difficult course. It seemed like she knew what she was talking about and related subjects to different areas of study. Your success in this class is definitely more dependent on your own study habits and knowledge. I HEAVILY recommend using the optional and extra resources.
I got an A in 227 with a different prof but I hated Koob for 228. She provides a LOT (pages) of resources; all useless. She tests you on the TINIEST of details that arent important. Her lecture is like an audition for a game show. She asks a question, you show your answer on a paper, she maybe tells you the right answer. Thats the whole lecture.
The tests are very specific towards information in her lectures. She makes you work for a grade and the people she is failing clearly aren't trying hard enough. There is a lot of information and it's really up to you about how much effort you are going to put in. Watch lectures and do practice exams to pass tests.
Less than 50% of her students actually pass and when it comes to lectures she never actually gets through all the chapters before the exam. We were supposed to have a test on 3 chapters, she didn't get through even one of them in lecture before the exam. Be prepared to teach yourself all the content on your own.
This class was ridiculous. VERY test-heavy. It seems as though the big stuff we went over in class was never on the tests. Instead, it was also the topics that seemed insignificant. The averages for every test ranged from 55-to 64%. All in all, do yourself a favor and take another professor.
Tests were given on things she expected us to learn the day before the exam. If you want to pass the test, the study guides will not even help. Studied the material for 15 hours just for the exam to be on things we weren’t expecting it to be on. Do not recommend
If you are a freshman know this professor is not easy however you will learn not only the material but also how to take exams you will see for the rest of your college career. She is very knowledgeable but she is not easy by any means. she is not easy but once you take this class you will be able to succeed in ever pother class.
Anatomy and Physiology is a hard class to take and to teach. She exceeded my expectations of what a bad teacher is. In lecture she'll spend half of the class on one slide then when we're one day from the test, she tries to squeeze an entire chapter into the allotted time (75 minutes). This class and BIO227 have a 70% fail rate for a reason.
I dislike her teaching style and the lectures. They are always super boring and I feel like she is unclear on what to prioritize for exams. After an exam, she fails to move on to the next unit which I feel like fails me as a student. She is nice and a good teacher just not my style.
Horrible!! never gives us a chance for second chances. not understanding and horrible professor, I got all a besides her class, no matter what I did I couldn't figure out this class.
She is a nice enough person, but literally does not teach. She reads straight out of the textbook and then expects you to know every intricate detail of just about everything you can imagine. Tests are the only thing that really impact your grade and they're very hard.
Yes she is hard but what most students don't understand is that for anything in the medical related world, this is how you have to study and know your topics by heart. She teaches like how the nursing, radiology, and respiratory programs will be teaching you. They don't call BIO227 a weeding out class for nothing.
She feeds off the failure of her students & truly doesn't care about you or your succession. Her exams are brutal and its on the tiny things that you'll only need to know if you go into that certain field! She doesn't respond in a timely manner either (takes about 1 week to respond and told me to figure it out)
This class was insanely difficult without having to be. Labs and extra resources are where I learned the most. Lectures from her are never worth going to. She goes off-topic and focuses on things that don't appear on exams. This class depends on your work-ethic because the professor is basically non-existent.
Rigid and tedious are the words I could use best to describe Koob's style of teaching. Her lecture videos are horribly long and inefficient, bogged down with technicality, and constantly reminding students they should have "Learned x or y" instead of just explaining and simplifying the current material. Exams are also written by her, so good luck
Prepare to memorize. And memorize. And memorize.
would not recommend koob as your bio 227 professor. honestly, not a good professor and the class comes with a lot of work. prepare yourself for this course because it will definitely take a lot of your free time. and its just a very exhausting class. its totally able to receive a good grade, you just have to work extremely hard
Worst course I've ever taken. Take this class at a different school.
She fails at her job as a professor. She is unable to keep a classrooms attention and is off topic. Her TA taught me more than she did all year. Exam questions were very confusing. She lacks passion in what she is doing and my overall experience was disappointing If you decide to take her my best advice crash course and keep head in the books
Took online, rarely got in touch with students, incredibly heavy work load, without giving ample time to prepare for exams.
Terrible and boring lectures. She always goes off topic and she is terrible at explain things. Test questions are hard and sometimes don't even match what she talks about in the lectures. I would suggest not taking her for Bio 227 because she is one of the only teachers that teaches Bio 228 so you will have to have her no matter what.
I do not care what anyone says on here. Marilyn Koob is by far the worst professor at BSU. Koob had been turning away students from the med field for years. She is rude and takes pride in her fail rate. She will change her syllabus mid semester and her tests do not align with anything taught in lecture. Listen to me and take this class online.
Koob was a decent professor in the sense of teaching, but her grading system is awful. The tests are actually impossible and count for half of the class. Most often than not, they have nothing to do with what we learned in class. If you are normally a C student, you will probably not pass this class.
LAs are the most helpful but aren't even given the proper materials to help students prepare for a test. Will do pop quizes in lectures and not even tell you until you till they are "due" when she would have us say anwsers aloud and not even tell us to write them down.
Koob is not a good professor for bio 228. I had Corey Hanley last semester and she prepared you for the exam and was a good professor. Koob does not care about the students at all and tries to ensure you do not get the material. I get the class is hard but she makes it nearly impossible to obtain the material and actually learn it. Hate her!
Marilyn seems nice. She knows her stuff and lectures are alright I guess. Just took an exam on 4 chapters and only went over 2 in lecture. She writes her own exams and the questions are ridiculous. We spent a whole week in talking about one specific thing and there were 2 exam questions pertaining to that material. Absurd. Sorry Marilyn.
DO NOT take Koob for this class! She's the worst professor I've had.Her lectures are extremely boring, and she never finishes the chapter we are supposed to get through that day.She tests you on the tiniest details that don't matter and her exams are extremely difficult. Her review sheets are useless so be prepared to teach yourself!
Avoid taking this professor at all costs if you can. Does not prepare you for tests, never finishes chapters in lecture. Will not in any way prepare you for exams, but exams make up almost all of your grade. Told us she will not do accommodations, does not seem to care for students and their success in away way.
Professor Koob is the worst professor I have ever had in every. single. way. She will not teach the material that is on the tests so be prepared to teach yourself. But even with teaching yourself the tests are so detailed that you will not pass anyway. If this class is required for you take it online, at a different school, or switch your major.
If you don't have to take Koob then don't. She will give 20-40 page guided lecture notes for each unit and will barely get through a third of those pages. Reading the textbook is going to be your best bet. If you fail an exam and email her the net class she'll post quotes about mindset and not take responsibility for not teaching.
Koob rarely touches on test material in class. She will test over 4 chapters, and maybe touch on 1 in the lecture. Do not recommend her.
I took Koob my freshman year, and was blindsided by the level of commitment needed to keep up. Lectures were monotonous and often were information overload. It was hard to stay engaged. The exams tended to be over 3-5 chapters at a time, and we'd only get through part of the material. Prepare to be your own teacher and to spend hours on this class.
I finally finished this class after a year and I've never looked forward to something more. This is by far the worst professor and hardest class I've ever had. Second semester I didn't even watch her lectures, just read and took notes from the text book and did way better on tests. Go to LA sessions and do the kahoots and pay attention in lab.
The worst professor I have ever had. I love biology, but Koob made this class obnoxiously more difficult than it already is. The exams had questions on topics barely touched on or not even touched on at all. Not to mention that she is just awful at actually teaching the course material. Please suggest choosing a different professor if you can!!
I would not recommend Professor Koob to anyone. While a nice person, she was not a great teacher. Her lectures were often disorganized and too confusing to follow. The exams were insanely difficult and had nothing to do with what we learned in class. I am an A student and received my first C in her class.
she'll yap about one topic for the majority of the class, then try to get through the rest of the material in like the last 15 minutes. shes one of those professors that just talks about the subject w/o explaining anything. she said that my class asked "too many questions" so we were behind the other lectures. it was like the 2nd week of class.
If you have the choice, I'd take a different professor. While she seemed like a nice person, she wasn't very willing to work with students. She often picked a single topic to cover in class and left the rest up to us to figure out. There is lots of readings and hidden assignments you have to look out for. I ended up dropping.
Koob is very educated. This is a tough course, a weed out course for a reason to get students ready for nursing school much of the time. If you are a hard worker and manage your time well you will do more than fine. I went to three lectures the entire YEAR. I would recommend spending lecture time at home instead note taking on the book. flashcards!
Do not take Koob if you have the option. The lecture content is heavy and while she explains some things well, most of the time she's impossible to understand. You have to read the text to pass. The exams cover content from the book mainly and are very difficult. The class is difficult as it is but taking it with Koob makes it unnecessarily harder.
The lectures don't really cover a lot of what is actually on the exam. I feel like the only way to really pass with her is to thoroughly read through the textbook if you have the time. Which is difficult to do when you are taking four other classes and work part-time, so I would advise making sure that you have made the time to do that.
Hardest class I have ever taken! Exams are horrible and McGraw assignments took hours. There is so much information and I wish there was a better way for her to make her lectures more interesting and engaging. She goes through so much material in so little time. Only way I am passing is because of my lab.
She frequently doesn't complete lectures, but the material is still on the exams. Exams are heavily based in a chemical stand point. LAs are not given the material for the test so even they are not fully in the know about what the exam is on, so it is a shot in the dark for everyone.
anatomy is a hard class, expect that. Koob uses material that has been tried and true for years. Her lectures aren't great but if you read the chapters, and study to comprehend the material you will do great. take the class later if you can, having a solid bio background really helps. this class will give you exactly what you put in.
I didn't interact a lot with Koob since I took her online this semester, but overall she was fine. You don't interact with her unless you reach out. Her class is hard, and it's hard regardless of professor, so keep that in mind. If you use the materials she gives you and spend a lot of time studying you'll be fine.
A&P is meant to be difficult with heavy material due to it being a weave-out class at BSU. Although Koob lectures slowly she is very educated and passionate. My best advice is to attend lecture and have notes done prior to class as well. Also, focus on her written notes and take advantage of LA sessions. Flashcards are very resourceful as well.
Please take the negative reviews in stride. Yes, this is a tough course. Yes, Prof. Koob expects that you actually read the material and study (not just skim and expect to get an A.) If you want to ACTUALLY learn A&P, then Prof. Koob is for you. Read the chapter, actively study, listen to lectures.
Be ready to hate your life and basically teach this whole coarse to yourself. She does not teach and she doesn't give you a fair chance. She does not offer any help and does not do extra credit, unless the school forces her too. SWITCH TEACHERS IF YOU CAN because they actually teach and want to see you succeed and offer extra help and extra credit.
Marilyn's lectures cover a lot, but don't always align with the tough exams. Reading the textbook is crucial. Unstuckstudy AI was super helpful for practice questions and preparing for the challenging assessments.
Do not recommend, if at BSU Hanley not Koob is your best bet.
Not only does she hate responding to emails for help, but she will out you in front of the whole class for emailing her instead of "reading the syllabus for answers." Will publish study guides for her many tests that have no correlation or no help to the actual test which is worth almost 60% of your grade. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!
Koob's failure to teach makes this course more difficult than it should be. Reviews are pointless and do not cover exam material, quizzes and smartbook assignments are estimated to be 2-3 hours long for .2% of your grade. Exams almost exclusively test on material that you will have to learn yourself, also struggles with online teaching tools.
She was the worst professor I have ever taken in my life. I am sure she is a great person outside of class, but was not built for teaching. I taught myself everything, and she could't stay on topic, we would never cover all of the content, and she would still test us on it.
Koob's class is EXTREMLY hard, I'm not asking for easy, just fairness. Long exam study list before exams maybe 10% will apply. Exam? come from a test bank; they do not always correlate with previous weeks homework and lectures. Often exams had ? to next week's assignment. I worked hard, spent 40 hours weekly to feel let down, no options but a W :(
Absolutely terrible professor! Her lectures were disorganized, monotonous, and worthless. Extremely test heavy with questions that she words in such a way as to try to confuse you. Would frequently have questions on the test that she didn't cover in class. If you've registered for her class, drop it and find somebody else. Shouldn't be a professor!
I knew A&P was going to be difficult, but she lacked teaching skills and opportunity to improve grades. I would recommend that you take this class through a different college or professor. I have taken this course with a different professor at BSU and she was much better than whatever was going on in her class.
Professor Koob wasn't secretive on what would be on her tests. She highlighted what you should know and told you what to read. If you didn't put hours into studying her material then don't bother taking any a&p class. You earn a good grade in this class by putting in the work. Its science people.
I have taken A&P before and got an A but it didn't transfer so had to take it again. I'm a straight A student and spend hours each day on this course and am barely passing. The exam reviews have nothing to do with what's on the exam. Questions are worded to intentionally confuse you. I've never rated a professor but people need to be warned.
Seems to spend more time writing unnecessarily long weekly announcements that primarily focus on shaming half the class. Nearly impossible to watch the 1 - 2 hour long lecture videos without putting them on 2x speed. I do enjoy that I don't have to do group activities - I can't stand paying for school and my education being at risk due to others.
Do not take this professor, her tests are nothing like the study guides or lectures and her lectures are long and pointless. Super boring, not engaging, normally I do fine in the lab classes and on tests, but failed her tests simply because she does not set students up for success in any aspect.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! do not even think about it. you will not pass, it is rigged from the start. my average is 50% per test and I have a B+ for the labs. No matter how much studying you take you cannot pass her class. If you dare, pick your god and prepare.
